Funding for Americaโ€™s surface transportation needs has increased markedly over the past two years โ€” thatโ€™s due in large part to the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). In 2021, approximately $53 billion in highway formula funds were made available to states. The DOT FY 2023 budget includes $68.9 billion for the Federal Highway program, representing a $19.8 billion increase

from the 2021 enacted level. โ€œThe investments in the presidentโ€™s budget make traveling safer, easier, cleaner and more affordable for the American people,โ€ Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said of the funds. see SURFACE page 32

Nearly $57 million in highway improvements was advanced at the state level during FY 2021. The department of transportationโ€™s 2023 fiscal year budget includes almost $70 billion for highways.
