Crews from the Tutor Perini / Brosamer & Wall joint venture started work last November for the Bureau of Reclamation’s (Reclamation) $187 million Phase 1 of the Friant-Kern Canal Middle Reach Capacity Correction project,
which will restore capacity in a 10-mi. portion of the Friant-Kern Canal in the Great Basin Region of central California. The project is repairing damage caused by subsidence — a sinking of the earth from groundwater removal. Overall, crews will eventually restore capacity in a total of 33 mi. of the canal.
Project Progress “Achieving schedule milestones are tantamount to our success,” said Paul Garcia, the joint venture’s construction manager. “The joint venture must meet specific schedule milestones to not impact water deliveries to customers. Canal outages are planned during off-peak see CANAL page 28
Aspiration Begins to Slowly Meet Jobs Demand Construction Needs Workers … Workers Want to Learn a Good-Paying Trade By Lucy Perry CEG CORRESPONDENT
The first two months of 2022 saw a sizable increase in payroll numbers in the construction industry. The AGC reports employment rose by 60,000 jobs between January and February, and hourly pay jumped its highest in nearly 40 years. The industry still faces a massive worker shortage, but good-paying jobs have people migrating into construction, choosing craft trades over desk jobs. see JOBS page 34

Mecalac Shows Benefits of MCR Line Through Videos Mecalac, a global designer, manufacturer and distributor of compact construction equipment for urban environments, announced its new “Make Your Move to Mecalac” video series that showcases the unique capabilities of its MCR crawler skid excavator line. The videos demonstrate the MCR’s advantages compared to similar machines in terms of speed, maneuvering in tight spaces, cab access, placing material below grade and more. “Challenging the conventional way products are designed and better serving the user are key drivers for Mecalac product development,” said Peter Bigwood, general manager for Mecalac North America. “Contractors have many options for compact equipment in the North American market, but we didn’t come here to offer more of the same. We came to bring something new that will make a difference on a job site. Our video series shows just that: the unique capabilities of the MCR that can take a contractor to new levels of productivity.” The first video in the series focuses on the lifting capacity of the 12,600lb. (5,700 kg) 6MCR compared to a Mecalac’s new video series showcases the unique capabilities of its traditional mini excavator and shows the machine’s ability to effortlessly lift MCR crawler skid excavator line.
a 4,850-lb. (2,200 kg) box. Other videos in the series will focus on topics such as: • how the boom design maximizes lifting power and increases stability to outperform similar sized excavators • how switching the bucket for a set of forks transforms the MCR into a highly maneuverable material handler • how the MCR can effortlessly dig and swing up to dump into a truck without repositioning Comprised of three models, the 6MCR, 8MCR and 10MCR, Mecalac’s line of compact skid excavators offers enhanced speed, productivity and compact operation to a variety of industries and applications, including construction, landscaping, utility, demolition and more. The machines provide the swiftness of a skid steer with the 360-degree rotation of an excavator for versatility and travel speeds two times faster than any small excavator, according to the manufacturer. Upstate Brush Control
National Equipment Dealers LLC (NED) and Hyundai Construction Equipment recently partnered with Jon Byrnes, owner of Upstate Brush Control, a popular YouTube personality and influencer on social media. Upstate Brush Control is rapidly gaining popularity on YouTube and, according to Byrnes, it has become a “trusted source” in the forestry mulching business. In fact, when searching “forestry mulching” on google, several of Byrnes’ videos are the first to appear. South Carolina-based Upstate Brush Control currently has more than 54,000 subscribers on YouTube and millions of views. Videos are produced weekly and subscriber engagement, through “likes” and comments, is high. Byrnes films with a first-person style that focuses on the “operator experience” with unique camera angles. He narrates the before, during, and after process of each unique job. Most importantly to Byrnes and his team, is to create a family-friendly and authentic experience for his audience. “Over the years, God has blessed us with plenty of work and reliable help. The YouTube experience has changed our lives and our business model in a big way. Today we can teach, influence and interact with a whole new audience,” Byrnes explained. Byrnes grew up in South Carolina and started working in his father’s construction business from the age of 5 years old. About 12 years ago, he saw his first compact track loader, equipped with a dedicated mulching head and, in his words, he was “hooked.” A few years later, in 2013, he purchased his first track loader with a mulching attachment. Since that time, his business and industry expertise have grown rapidly, just like his popular YouTube channel. “Our goal is to enjoy our work and keep a positive attitude, despite the challenges we face. We produce clean, wholesome content and we enjoy using our influence to give back to the community in several ways,” Byrnes said. Corey Rogers, vice president of marketing for NED, met Byrnes at the 2021 Utility Expo, at a Social Media Influencer Meet & Greet, hosted by Hyundai Construction Equipment and another popular social media icon and friend of Byrnes, Mike Simon of Dirt Perfect. Byrnes was looking to expand his operation beyond tracked mulchers and small excavators to something larger. Through NED and Hyundai’s partnership, Byrnes received a Hyundai HX140ALD, a 34,000-lb., full-size excavator, equipped with auxiliary hydraulics, a quick coupler, a Rockland hydraulic thumb and heavy-duty bucket, and a front dozer blade. Recently, Upstate Brush Control took delivery of the new Hyundai excavator, which it plans to use to remove trees and stumps, dig basements and clear residential lots. Eventually, it plans to mount a mulching head on the machine for additional versatility when mulching and land clearing. “NED is excited to partner with Hyundai and Upstate Brush Control on this new YouTube opportunity. At NED we have a strong presence on YouTube with our NED Talks video series, NED Customer Stories and NED Equipment Tutorials, featured on our channel. This partnership provides a great opportunity to expand our audience with a respected expert in the forestry mulching industry,” Rogers said.

Hempcrete May Soon Be Certified as U.S. Building Material The dream green building material for many building professionals may be one step closer to being certified as one of the United States’ national building materials in the U.S. building codes. Hemp Inc., one of the global leaders on the forefront of the industrial hemp industry, reported that hempcrete was submitted as an appendix in the International Residential Codes (IRC) by the US Hemp Building Foundation. The International Code Council experts are set to evaluate the paperwork submitted in March 2022 and then again in September 2022. Once accepted, hempcrete will be an approved natural building material in the United States. According to the news source, once hempcrete is approved or certified as a national building material, the material will be “accessible to the standard person to construct with” and “allow you to build with it without needing an alternative material variance.” Certification of hempcrete will ultimately help permitting departments gain more familiarity with the material which is new to many since legalized under the 2018 Farm Bill, especially since it has a big barrier. The barrier? Many building professionals aren’t

from
familiar with it or think it’s a substitution for concrete or think it’s something to get high on. Yes, it’s a green dream to some but still unknown to others. And then there are the states that make
getting a permit for hemp a bit tricky. Since “no national guidelines, test methods or specifications for hempcrete exist” and building codes differ across the board, approval “depends on whether local officials embrace innovation”. The US Hemp Building Association has been trying to establish “best practices and rules for acceptance” by the IRC and many are optimistic that new hempcrete codes will spark a “groundswell of interest”. This shouldn’t be too hard with all the benefits hempcrete offers. The insulation material “resists mold, fire and pests” and practically lasts forever. Not to mention, it absorbs carbon. One source noted that “hempcrete, the non-structural insulation made of hemp hurd (shiv) and lime binder, provides a superior insulation product when installed up to 1 ft. thick in wall assemblies. The material is vapor-permeable, thermally regulating, fire resistant and repels mold and pests. Hempcrete insulation is carbon negative due to the large amounts of carbon sequestered by the hemp plant via photosynthesis while growing.” The building industry is very “traditional” and doesn’t see many “new” materials. Most of the materials used in the building industry
have remained the same for years and those same materials have some negative environmental and health impacts. Hempcrete, on the other hand, is not only sustainable and green, it makes ecological and financial sense. It’s favorable in many ways so when the IRC enshrines hempcrete as a certified natural building material later this year, the potential for the building industry could be huge. To date, few farmers in this country grow hemp strictly for building purposes. It’s mostly grown for CBD, bioplastics, food or even mulch. One generally doesn’t see it grown specifically for hempcrete. And farmers need “reliable customers and economies of scale” and to be in close proximity to a processing center or they’ll pay exorbitant prices for shipping. Builders that do use it now, generally can’t get enough locally so they have to import it from overseas and the quality varies. With the industrial hemp market growing exponentially, resources and contacts are invaluable. The industrial hemp market is expected to reach $12.01 billion by 2028 and is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16.2 percent from 2021 to 2028, per the most recent study by Grand View Research Inc.
Countdown Begins to ConExpo-Con/AGG, IFPE 2023 With the next ConExpoCon/AGG and International Fluid Power Exposition (IFPE), being just a year away, construction pros can expect a next-level experience when they arrive at the Las Vegas Convention Center, March 14 to 18, 2023. The most obvious project under way during the last show was the construction of the new West Hall and adjacent Diamond Lot on the site of the old Gold Lot. The other was the Tesla-powered people mover, now called the “LVCC Loop,” underground transport project being built under the LVCC. Now that both projects are complete, ConExpo-Con/AGG and the co-located IFPE will make full use of both. “AEM and our show committees of industry leaders are working to take advantage of everything that has changed in Las Vegas to deliver a top-notch event delivering the latest innovations and best practices to help construction pros take their businesses and careers to
the next level,” said Dana Wuesthoff, show director of ConExpo-Con/AGG 2023. “Between the West Hall and Diamond Lot bringing a lot of displays closer to the rest of the show as well as serving as a connector to the Festival Lot, and the LVCC Loop making it effortless to get across the entire Las Vegas Convention Center, it’s never been easier for attendees to see everything they want to learn about when they get there.” According to the Las Vegas Convention Center, the new West Hall provides an additional 1.4 million square feet of indoor space, including 600,000 sq. ft. of “technologically advanced” exhibit space. ConExpo-Con/AGG is making West Hall a hub for earthmoving and materials handling displays in 2023, the largest of which include Case, KTec/Ashland, Hitachi and Hyundai. “When you attend ConExpoCon/AGG, you are able to see an item, touch it, sit in it, sometimes operate it and discuss it with the

engineers and manufacturers,” said Brian Dietz, of Bob Dietz & Sons, an excavating contractor in New York’s Hudson Valley. “When you walk up to a machine and talk to someone, you get answers that you are not going to get anywhere else. No local equipment dealer that can provide that. The event also helps you stay on top of the latest trending technology.” The Diamond Lot, attached to the west of West Hall, will have a large variety of exhibits from Business Operations to Hauling to Portable Power to Underground
Construction. The largest exhibitors in this area include Bauer Equipment, CZM Foundation Equipment, Trail King and Hammer & Steel. The LVCC Loop, which features new electric Tesla vehicles carrying attendees around the LVCC, is the other major addition to the show. With stops in the South Hall (providing easy access to both floors of South Hall and IFPE exhibits), running to Central Hall (providing access to Central and North Halls) and finishing at Diamond Lot (providing access to
West Hall), ConExpo-Con/AGG and IFPE attendees can save themselves a lot of steps getting around. And with shuttle service carrying construction pros from West Hall to the Festival Lot where the largest exhibits at the show are, seeing the whole show has never been easier. “In the construction business, everything we talk about is benchmarked by the last ConExpoCon/AGG we went to,” said Bruce Barnhart, owner of Barnhart’s Custom Services, an excavating contractor in the Eastern Iowa Corridor. “It’s like everything revolves around ConExpoCon/AGG. Even our conversations with our employees years after the show connect back to what we saw and learned at the show. Also, the hospitality by the manufacturers is a major highlight. At ConExpoCon/AGG you have fun, and you learn.” For more information on ConExpo-Con/AGG, visit https://www.conexpoconagg.com.

Case Construction Equipment is backing CMA and ACM Award-winning singer/songwriter/producer Jon Pardi as the headlining sponsor for his upcoming Ain’t Always the Cowboy tour. The tour is set to kick off in Irving, Texas, on July 14, 2022, and finish with a headlining show at Nashville’s Ascend Amphitheater on Oct. 1. The sponsorship continues the longstanding partnership between Case and Pardi, which has included an exclusive performance at Con Expo-Con/AGG 2020, ongoing earthmoving projects with Pardi — who is an experienced equipment operator — as well as special events highlighting the need for new talent in the construction industry. The new agreement includes the position as the headlining sponsor of the 2022 Ain’t Always the Cowboy tour, and a commitment to a Jon Pardi workforce development/operator training contest to be held in 2023. “This is unlike any other partnership because Jon is the real deal — he runs equipment, he walks the walk, and he connects with his fans in a real and authentic way,” said Terry Dolan, vice president — North America, Case. “He’s as comfortable on a bulldozer as he is singing, and we look forward to helping him out on the job site and on stage.” “I told Case we’d do this again if we could do some special events and projects, and if I could go hang out with people in Tomahawk again,” said Pardi. “I’ve had a lot of fun with the Case team raising awareness to careers in the construction industry and showcasing a bunch of really cool equipment — we’ll keep the party rolling.” A full schedule of tour dates can be found at JonPardi.com/Tour.
Common Ground Alliance (CGA), the stakeholder-driven organization dedicated to protecting underground utility lines, people who dig near them and their communities, announced that Jeff Skiles, co-pilot of U.S. Airways Flight 1549, “The Miracle on the Hudson,” will keynote the 2022 CGA Conference & Expo, set to take place in Anaheim, Calif., April 4-8, 2022. A robust schedule of conference educational programming also was announced, featuring curated sessions across six educational tracks designed to inspire collaboration among damage prevention professionals. The story of the “Miracle on the Hudson,” the famous 2009 water landing of a powerless airplane that resulted in no deaths, was the product of years of training and preparation, and applies safety principles relevant to all facets of the damage prevention process. Having only met each other three days earlier, co-pilots Jeff Skiles and Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger were able to work together as a team because they trusted in their system, training
and the professionalism of everyone involved, from the air-traffic controllers to their crew. The key lessons and principles that saved 155 lives are sure to resonate with conference attendees and reinforce the goals of the damage prevention industry. CGA additionally announced the full conference schedule of educational sessions from industry-leading speakers, designed to foster collaboration among damage prevention professionals and move the industry forward toward the next significant reduction in damages. Sessions will span six tracks, including Innovation, Stakeholder Engagement and Communications, Workplace Performance and Culture, Legislative and Regulatory Affairs, Damage Prevention Process, and the Engage Stage, where exhibitors will have the opportunity to provide case-studies, cutting-edge technology solutions and proven data to a moderated forum. Tenna Introduces TennaCAGE — New Companion to Hardware Product Lineup Tenna has launched the TennaCAGE, a companion to the Tenna hardware product line. The TennaCAGE is Tenna’s latest innovation that provides an additional layer of protection to the TennaMINI, one of its many construction equipment fleet trackers. The CAGE is a 3/16-in.-thick steel enclosure designed to give durable TennaMINI trackers an even greater level of protection and security in highly dynamic construction environments, while still giving the tracker the proper exposure to the sun and sky to charge and report as needed to function properly. It further serves as an even greater theft deterrent and increases the likelihood of stolen assets being recovered, according to the manufacturer. Tenna prides itself on constantly innovating and finding new and improved solutions for its contractors, as well as listening to its customers about their needs. Some contractors have expressed interest in having an additional layer of protection
against theft, particularly in areas of the country where cases of construction theft are higher. The TennaCAGE is a direct response to that. As all Tenna products before it, the TennaCAGE was inspired in the field and developed in-house. “While out in the field doing customer installs, we saw the need for heavy duty protection as we listened to our customers’ concerns about theft. We put our heads together and developed the TennaCAGE straight from those needs,” said Jim George, lead implementation mechanic at Tenna. “The CAGE takes the durability of our trackers to the next level. Whether you are looking for a tamper-proof solution, protection in extra high impact areas or are mounting trackers on attachments that get aggressive use, our 3/16-inch thick, stamped steel TennaCAGE has you covered.” The TennaCAGE is the Tennaapproved design for the TennaMINI fam-
ily of trackers. The CAGE was pre-tested for durability, including temperature, rust and impact tests, as well as to verify effectiveness; testing was performed to ensure cellular and GPS coverage is unimpacted with a clear view of the sky, and sunlight can get in to charge TennaMINI Solar trackers. The TennaCAGE is designed to fit TennaMINI trackers, but TennaBLE Beacons also fit inside. This product matters to contractors because the additional layer of armor for their trackers provides better peace of mind; their devices are safe and secure, and their investment in both their equipment assets and their tracking solutions remains protected. “The Tenna team is very excited to launch the TennaCAGE as we continue to innovate and add reliable products for construction environments to our growing hardware family,” said James House, VP of implementation at Tenna. Husqvarna Introduces New Range of DXR Demolition Robots Husqvarna Construction is strengthening its offer to demolition professionals with the launch of a new range of demolition robots — the DXR 145, DXR 275, DXR 305 and DXR 315. The new range of demolition robots offer more power and more control, which means users can take their skills to a whole new level. The four new DXR models offer, on average, a power increase above 20 percent when compared to previous models. This results in more effective and powerful machines that allow the user to get more demolition work done, faster, according to the company. Complementing this, the new machines have functionality that optimizes available power in a way that allows work to continue at high power levels, even if the task gets tougher due to circumstances — such as hot environments, for example. With an all new remote-control unit, precise operation is easier than ever. The new unit enables an improved overview of machine sta-

tus, which contributes to increased uptime and productivity. The long distance remote connection keeps the user safer and clear of any potential risks, enabling them to work in challenging areas with a
remote control range of up to 984 ft. Fredrik Linnell, global demolition director at Husqvarna Construction, said “Improving operator safety is our foremost priority. All our new DXR models are
third party certified in terms of safety, EMC and functional safety. At the same time, achieving highquality, fast results is literally in the user’s hands. “More than ever, these new
machines are an extension of the operator, increasing power and offering improved control over the factors that define how successful the job will be.” With various multi-tools and factory installed packages available, productivity and areas of application can be quickly enhanced. The new range also has been engineered to facilitate easier trouble shooting, reducing downtime even further. “We understand that demolition work can be hot, uncomfortable and demanding, so during development of our new DXR range, the focus has been on how we can make every working day safer, easier and more productive for the user,” Linnell said. “We believe the results speak for themselves and that demolition and construction professionals will appreciate the new intelligent tech, smooth operation and high levels of performance the new DXR range delivers.” For more information, visit www.husqvarnacp.com.

ABC Hails Texas Court’s Decision to Block Independent Contractor Do-Over The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas dealt a blow to the Biden administration’s efforts to delay and rescind the Trump administration’s 2021 independent contractor final rule in a decision applauded by Associated Builders and Contractors, which had sued to block those actions. Under the court’s decision, the ABC-supported rule went into effect as scheduled on March 8, 2021, and remains in effect. “The independent contractor final rule brings much-needed clarity and guidance to the proper classification of contractors under the Fair Labor Standards Act,” said Ben Brubeck, ABC vice president of regulatory, labor and state affairs. “For too long, businesses and contractors who want to remain independent have been subjected to burdensome lawsuits and inconsistent court rulings under the FLSA. The U.S. Department of Labor’s improper delay and withdrawal of the independent contractor rule did nothing to address the very real problems confronting millions of contractors who have made the choice to remain independent. “This decision will provide much-needed clarity for small businesses and the entire construction industry,” said Brubeck. “Independent contractors are an essential lifeline to the construction industry, and the Trump-era independent contractor rule will ensure these workers and their clients can continue to thrive and play an important role in economic growth.” On May 5, 2021, the DOL announced the withdrawal —
effective May 6, 2021 — of the Trump-era independent contractor final rule. On May 14, 2021, ABC, the ABC Southeast Texas Chapter, the Coalition for Workforce Innovation and the Financial Services Institute filed an amended complaint challenging the DOL’s unlawful withdrawal of the independent contractor rule, a hasty and unjustified action that violated the Administrative Procedure Act, compounding a violation that began when the DOL improperly delayed the effective date of the rule in March 2021. “Texas employs more construction workers than any other state in the country,” said Kimberly Bernard, president of the ABC Southeast Texas Chapter. “This is welcome news for our industry and can help create regulatory certainty for legitimate independent contractors and stakeholders.” “The withdrawal of the duly finalized economic realities test was both procedurally and substantively defective, and the coalition is pleased it has been vacated as a matter of law,” said the Coalition for Workforce Innovation in a statement. “The DOL’s actions undermined the very independent workers they purported to protect. CWI believes the updated economic realities test appropriately reflects the modern economy and looks forward to working with the DOL to further support independent workers and the choices they make for themselves, their families and their livelihoods.” For more information, visit www.abc.org.

delivery season to construct work that interfaces with the existing canal. Our construction partners, including Reclamation, are committed to meeting these milestones and are working diligently to resolve barriers to success.” Peak days are expected to have more than 200 craftsmen on-site. Subcontractors include Martinez Steel for bar reinforcing; W.C. Maloney for demolition and clearing; Viking Drillers Inc. for installation of dewatering system; G&J Heavy Haul Inc. for earthwork; Strategic Mechanical Inc. for electrical; and Avison Construction Inc. for asphalt paving. Currently, crews are clearing trees and preparing the site for start of earthwork operations and the construction on various structures such as inverted concrete siphons, concrete turnouts and a concrete check structure at Deer Creek. Structure work is expected to begin in May 2022 and expected to be complete in August 2023. “Our first goal is to start canal excavation and embankment operations,” said Garcia. “Our earthwork subcontractor, G&J Heavy Haul, has mobilized two Cat 390F hydraulic excavators to cut approximately eight feet to the invert of the new canal. The excavated material will be placed directly into the embankment of two new levees that will be constructed on each side of the new canal. The new canal will be 26-feet deep and 24-feet wide at the base of the invert.” Approximately 4 million total cu. yds. are expected to be placed in the embankment. The joint venture will excavate local borrow sources to supply the additional material needed to construct the levees. This material will be loaded at the borrow source into double-semi bottom dump trucks to be transported directly into the embankments. “New technology plays a major role in our operations,” said Garcia. “The joint venture is utilizing GPS-equipped excavators, motor graders and dozers to meet the canal’s plan dimensions both accurately and efficiently. In addition, our surveyor, California Construction Surveying, is flying drone photogrammetry to account for quantities on a weekly basis. On an earthwork project of this size, a drone can accurately account for quantities much more efficiently and provide results in less time.” The canal lining operations will see concrete poured-inplace for the floor and walls. “We will be setting up our concrete batch plant near the project site,” said Garcia. “Our Erie Strayer M-5470 is a double-drum plant that will perfectly suit the operation. We are in the process of mobilizing the batch plant from Bakersfield
The project is repairing damage caused by subsidence — a sinking of the earth from groundwater removal. Overall, crews will eventually restore capacity in a total of 33 mi. of the canal.
and expect to have the plant in operation by year’s end. “The 3.5-inch canal lining will require approximately 70,000 cubic yards of concrete or 650,000 square yards of liner [roughly the square area of 100 football fields],” said Garcia. “We expect to begin machine paving operations in May 2023.” Other permanent materials to be installed include: 35,000 linear ft. of PVC water stops; 700,000 linear ft. of joint materials; 3,000 linear ft. of welded steel pipe; stop logs and stop gates for structures; and various precast materials. Key pieces of equipment for the lining operations include a Guntert & Zimmerman (G&Z) trimmer to cut finish grade, G&Z canal paver, joint Jumbo for inserting PVC transverse contraction joints, a Jumbo for finishing concrete and a separate Jumbo for applying curing compound. Reclamation Regional Director Ernest Conant is pleased that the work has begun in the Porterville area. “[This] symbolizes what can happen when federal, state and local agencies partner together to address water supply challenges,” he said. “The groundbreaking marks a critical milestone in one of Reclamation’s highest priorities to provide water supply reliability to one of the most productive agriculture regions in the nation.” Karla Nemeth, director of DWR, agreed. “Restoring the capacity of our existing infrastructure is an
important step toward diversifying water supplies by supporting groundwater replenishment throughout the Central Valley and water recycling projects in Southern California,” she said. Phase 1, said Friant Water Authority Chief Executive Officer Jason Phillips, is “the culmination of five years of dedicated work to design and fund a project to address the most severe subsidence on any major canal in the San Joaquin Valley. While many water projects throughout the West take decades to plan and implement, this project is turning dirt today and will in a few short years restore critical water deliveries that support the San Joaquin Valley’s businesses, communities and farms.” The ongoing work is anticipated to be completed and fully operational by September 2024. Crews are constructing 10 mi. of new concrete-lined canal to replace one of the worst pinch points of the canal’s subsiding middle reach, along with eight concrete inverted siphons below various structures and creeks along with various concrete turnout structures, and other miscellaneous elements. Phase 1 was designed by Stantec Consulting Services Inc. Additional equipment will be brought on-site as the project progresses. The project team will rent equipment from dealerships such as Ecco Equipment, JS Cole Company, see CANAL page 38

(L-R): Ron, Noah and Adam Bergman, the core team of Muskox.
By Ruksana Hussain CEG CORRESPONDENT
For many in the design and architecture industries, less is more is a mantra. For the Bergmans, that principle held true with the October 2020 launch of their Muskox bi-directional snowblower attachment. Taking a wellknown industry pain point and creating a streamlined solution has allowed the Minnesota-based company to find great success in the last few months, despite launching during the pandemic. “My father Ron, who is also my partner, was doing snow removal at his shop — he was using two different attachments to do it,” said Adam Bergman, co-founder at Muskox. “He had the idea of combining those machines, so he’d only have to use one attachment. My background had been as a real estate investor, and we do snow removal on all our rental property.
One of the biggest pain points we had was the shoveling in front of garage doors.” Adam saw the potential for not just shops but also homeowners’ associations to use such a solution. Prototyping began in spring 2017 and finetuning the product over the next few years included a hydraulic slip clutch and redesigning the bottom of the machine to incorporate a glide plate to avoid accidents on grass or gravel surfaces. “Whether you're an 8-year-old or an 80-year-old, you understand the challenge with existing snow blowers of needing to shovel in front of garage doors, it’s a universal problem,” said Adam. “When you see ours where you have that opportunity to back drag and blow at the same time, you instantly see the value and what makes our product different.” In 2020, Muskox won first place in Northwest Minnesota
The 22-78 Muskox bi-directional snowblower attachment’s back drag feature, for which the Bergmans received the patent in spring 2021, allows operators to blow snow while back dragging in front of obstructions, saving time and money, and lowering any chance of injuries by decreasing the manual labor typically involved in the process. The lowered chute, a result of the finetuning process, also is better for operator visibility.

The lowered chute, a result of the finetuning process, is also better for operator visibility. The 78-in. machine is available as a single auger and dual auger, but Muskox is looking at expanding into additional sizes. They turned to operators at snow removal companies to test the product. “We've had a lot of positive feedback from operators letting us
know where they would like to see our next steps go,” said Adam. “We are operators building for operators. We've had a lot of requests for different sizing on machines both smaller and larger.” The core team at Muskox consists of co-founder Adam, managing business development, marketing, and financing; his father Ron, a retired engineer from Artic Cat Snowmobiles — where he did research and development on snowmobiles for more than 30 years — who heads engineering, research and development done inhouse; and Adam’s younger brother Noah, who handles the production and shipping. All manufacturing occurs at the company’s location in Mentor, Minn., and business offices are in Grand Forks, N.D. Muskox is 100 percent made in the United States, offers one-year warranty on all non-wearable parts and stocks inventory to ship to customers for
repairs. “When we first started, we were doing R&D out of my dad’s 2,000square-foot personal shop. In fall/summer 2021, we rented roughly about a 5,000-square-foot shop space that we moved into and that's currently where we do the assembly of the product. We’ve had a successful season and we’re continuing to expand the business, there's going to be opportunity for growth and potential expansion into a larger facility,” said Adam. Approximately 90 percent of Muskox sales are direct-to-consumer while the rest are in partnership with RDO Equipment, through which Muskox is sold in 36 different locations. In 2021, Muskox was sold in 16 states in the United States and two provinces in Canada. Consumers include those buying for personal use at their shop or farm, smaller operators focusing on driveways and resisee MUSKOX page 30

dential snow removal, and larger operators with multiple HOA accounts. Muskox has found its strength in its online presence, building a loyal following online. “We have created all of our own YouTube videos breaking down how we have a service manual that's available on the internet so consumers can go online at any time, and they'll find a library of videos showing not only how to use the product, best practices, but also any type of maintenance and repairs,” said Adam, who offers virtual demos of the equipment every Wednesday at 11 a.m. Central and is on Facebook Live and YouTube. “This gives us a chance to interact with people that are interested in the product. We show the product in use live, we’re able to perform with the machine according to the questions they asked. We also can flip the camera over inside the cab and run it from the operator’s perspective. It's been a lot of positive feedback with it.” There are, of course, pros and
cons to an online-first approach. “Probably just keeping up with the demand of the product,” said Adam. “The internet really exposes you quickly, it can be your best
friend, but also can have some real challenges because you’re going to be held accountable a lot faster on a much larger platform. We’ve been able to embrace that, but the growth
of the company has exponentially exceeded our expectations. We’re very proud that we have built this business with a strong foundation from engineering to marketing to
branding and product in 15 months and are looking forward to growing and having a strong future based on that foundation that's been established.” CEG

Average Hourly Wage Increases Six Percent Year-Over-Year JOBS from page 1
“All segments of construction added workers in February,” said Ken Simonson, AGC’s chief economist. “However, filling positions remains a struggle, as pay is rising even faster in other sectors.” In fact, the average hourly wage for construction craft workers increased 6 percent from February 2021 to February 2022. Simonson noted it was the steepest 12-month increase since December 1982. He also noted that the industry average of $31.62 per hour for such workers exceeded the private sector average by 17 percent. Employment numbers at construction firms of all types saw an increase in February. Nonresidential added 29,400 employees, including 19,900 more employees among specialty trade contractors, 7,300 at heavy and civil engineering construction firms and 2,200 working for general building contractors. In comparison, employment in residential construction rose by 31,000 workers. Among those numbers, 24,300 joined specialty trade contractors and 6,700 were employed by homebuilders and multifamily general contractors. The number of unemployed jobseekers with construction experience shrank by 26 percent over the past year, according to Simonson’s report, from February 2021 to 677,000 in February 2022. He said the decline shows the industry will have a hard time filling positions with experienced workers. Association officials believe the industry will need to hire hundreds of thousands of additional workers annually for the next several years to both finish projects funded by the bipartisan infrastructure law and satisfy the continuing demand for homebuilding and private nonresidential structures. AGC officials are pushing for increased funding for career and technical education and to support a wider range of apprenticeship and training opportunities and to enable further pursuit of high-paying construction careers. “Construction firms are doing all they can to add employees and pay them well,” said Stephen E. Sandherr, CEO of the AGC. “But there are not likely to be enough workers to meet demand unless officials in Washington act now to prepare more jobseekers for these opportunities.” In fact, the Associated Builders and Contractors predicts the industry will need to draw nearly 650,000 additional workers this year to meet the demand for labor. “ABC’s 2022 workforce shortage analysis sends a message loud and clear: The construction industry desperately needs qualified, skilled craft professionals to build America,” said Michael Bellaman, president and CEO. “The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act passed in November and stimulus from Covid-19 relief will pump billions in new spending into our nation’s most critical infrastructure. Qualified craft professionals are essential to efficiently modernize roads, bridges, energy production and other projects across the country. More regulations and less worker freedom make it harder to fill these jobs.” ABC’s proprietary model converts anticipated increases in construction outlays into demand for construction labor at a rate of approximately 3,900 new jobs per billion dollars of additional construction spending. This increased demand is added to the current level of above-average job openings. Projected industry retirements, shifts to other industries and other forms of anticipated separation also are factored in. Based on historical Census Bureau Job-to-Job flow data, an estimated 1.2 million construction workers will leave their jobs
to work in other industries in 2022. It is expected that this will be offset by an anticipated 1.3 million workers who will leave other industries to work in construction, predicts ABC. “The workforce shortage is the most acute challenge facing the construction industry despite sluggish spending growth,” said Anirban Basu, ABC chief economist. After accounting for inflation, construction spending has likely fallen over the past 12 months, Basu said. As outlays from the infrastructure bill increase, construction spending will expand. This in turn will exacerbate the chasm between supply and demand for labor. “An added concern is the decline in the number of construction workers ages 25 to 54, which fell 8 percent over the past decade. Meanwhile, the share of older workers exiting the workforce soared,” he continued. According to the CDC, the industry’s average age of retirement is 61, and more than one in five construction workers are currently older than 55, said Basu. “The scarcity of qualified skilled workers is an even more pressing issue,” Basu said. “Since 2011, the number of entrylevel construction laborers has increased 72.8 percent, while the number of total construction workers is up just 24.7 percent.” For reference, he said the number of electricians was up 23.9 percent over that span while the number of carpenters actually declined 7.5 percent. The number of construction managers has increased by just 2.1 percent, according to Basu’s figures. More than 40 percent of construction workforce growth over the past decade consists of low-skilled construction laborers, who represent just 19 percent of the workforce. “The roughly 650,000 workers needed must quickly acquire specialized skills,” said Basu. “With many industries outside of construction also competing for increasingly scarce labor, the industry must take drastic steps to ensure future workforce demands are met.” In 2023, the industry will need to bring in nearly 590,000 new workers on top of normal hiring to meet industry demand, and that’s presuming that construction spending growth slows next year. “Now is the time to consider a career in construction,” said Bellaman. “The vocation offers competitive wages and many opportunities to both begin and advance in an industry that builds the places where we work, play, worship, learn and heal.” The Allure of Craft Trades It seems America’s workers are listening. Millions, part of the Great Resignation, are leaving jobs during the pandemic and embarking on new careers in construction. As the shift unfolds across the country, the migration has spurred an interest in trade schools across the country, according to radio station wbur.com. Some say they are fleeing toxic workplaces while others seek better pay or benefits. Many want radically new ways to work. At the same time, fewer high-school grads are considering four-year colleges. Data from the National Student Clearinghouse shows an enrollment increase in two-year construction programs. The pandemic has meant more students opting to go into the trades, according to wbur.com. And the interest in craft trades could accelerate with the IIJA plan, which should boost demand even further for construction workers across the country. Many of the new workers are likely to come from vocation-
al and technical schools, which typically train people for trades like electrical work or auto repair. Tony Carnevale, head of the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce, believes the labor shortage can be fixed by two things: immigration and workforce training. Good-paying jobs help, too. Money Talks, Workers Walk In his Jan. 31, 2022, Data Digest edition, the AGC’s Simonson included Bureau of Labor Statistics numbers for construction wages and salaries. The two rose 1.3 percent in the fourth quarter of 2021, and 3.8 percent year-over-year. Those figures are up from 2.8 percent in 2020. In comparison, wages for the total private sector accelerated to a 5-percent y/y increase, which is the most in the 21-year history of the series. Compensation in construction, including wages, salaries and benefits, rose 1.1 percent in Q4 of 2021 and 3.5 percent year-over-year, up from 2.4 percent in 2020. Total private industry compensation increased 1.2 percent in Q4 and 4.4 percent year-over-year, up from 2.6 percent in 2020, according to Simonson. The steeper increases in sectors other than construction may be one reason contractors are having trouble filling jobs, he said. A construction industry survey conducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) echoed data showing skilled craft professionals continue to earn high wages. NCCER’s 2022 Construction Craft Salary Survey found that of the 41 construction positions surveyed, average annual salaries ranged from $49,920 to $98,965. Project supervisors and project managers topped the list, earning more than $90,200 and $98,900, respectively. Professions earning more than $65,000 include HVAC technician, commercial electrician, instrumentation fitter, boilermaker, industrial maintenance mechanic, pipefitter, rigger, millwright, industrial electrician, pipe welder, surveyor, construction site safety technician, electronic systems technician, mobile crane operator, plumber, combo welder, tower crane operator, instrumentation technician and power line worker. Eight other craft areas made more than $60,000 per year. The most significant pay increase was power line worker, up 25 percent from previous years, with plumber a close second at a 23 percent increase. Because many craft professionals receive additional pay incentives, their take-home pay is typically much greater than the incomes reflected, according to NCCER. In fact, construction worker pay grew at the fastest rate in 40 years, according to BLS numbers. “Average hourly earnings in construction are up 6 percent on a year-over-year basis in February, the fastest pace since 1982,” Odeta Kushi, deputy chief economist of First American, told Business Insider. “The rise is positive news for an industry that has been grappling with chronic labor shortages. In such a labor-intensive industry, you need more workers.” The National Association of Home Builders noted that subcontractor shortages are even more widespread than “shortages of labor employed directly by general contractors. “Attracting skilled labor will remain a key objective for construction firms in the coming quarters and will become more challenging as the labor market strengthens and the unemployment rate declines,” NAHB maintains. Repairing Subsidence Damage Will Restore Capacity of 33 Miles of Canal CANAL from page 28
United Rentals, Rain for Rent, Herc and Quinn Caterpillar. “Each partner in our joint venture has maintained great relationships with partner dealerships for years,” said Garcia. “Their support on our project is central to our success.” Equipment maintenance is vital on this high-production, linear project. “Concrete and earth is abrasive, tough on our equipment,” said Master Mechanic William “Man” George. “It is important we grease, clean pins and bushings regularly, to avoid major repairs. Air filters must be changed regularly and not just blown out. When you blow out the filter, it may cause a larger problem when dirt is blown past the fabric into the engine. It will affect bearings and pistons. “Our paving equipment requires nightly cleaning after a pave day,” continued George. “During the paving shift, concrete builds up on the belts, and may get on hydraulic and electrical lines. We must clean these during and after shift. This is critical to tomorrow’s operation.” Garcia is assisted by an experienced and determined canal building group: Project Superintendent Mike Newman, Assistant Manager Marlene Becker, Quality Manager Tim Schaftlein, Structures Manager Lonnie Stahl, Senior Manager John Pologar, experienced foremen, mechanics, engineers and office support. ‘They all play an important role in our success,” said Garcia. “But it wouldn’t be possible without the expertise of Bob Brosamer. Bob Brosamer, co-owner of Brosamer and Wall Inc., along with Charlie Wall, has been actively constructing large canals since the 1970s. Our team is honored to be a part of this incredible knowledge base.” Why This Project Is Necessary The Bureau, part of the Department of the Interior, is investing in initiatives to improve water management and drought resilience projects. “Drought, climate change and less certain precipitation events call for the need to develop innovative and sustainable water management solutions,” said Tanya Trujillo, the Department of the Interior’s assistant secretary of water and science. “This project will increase water supply reliability in the San Joaquin Valley and symbolizes the benefits of working together with partners to develop ways to utilize the significant investment opportunities to modernize infrastructure that the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law can provide.” President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law provides $8.3 billion to the Bureau of Reclamation over five years to fund water efficiency and recycling programs, rural water projects, and WaterSMART grants to ensure that irrigators, Tribes, and adjoining communities receive adequate assistance and support. The canal project is being funded by Reclamation, the Friant Water Authority, and the California Department of Water Resources (DWR). The 152-mi. Friant-Kern Canal “plays a critical role in delivering water to 1 million acres of highly productive farmland and more than 250,000 people from Fresno to Bakersfield in Central California,” noted a project press release. “Since the canal’s construction in 1951, more than
50 percent of its original conveyance capacity in the middle reach has been lost due to land subsidence.” The canal, completed in 1951, begins at Friant Dam and conveys water from Millerton Lake, a reservoir on the San Joaquin River, south to its terminus at the Kern River in Bakersfield. It was designed as a gravity-fed facility and does not rely on pumps to move water. It was constructed, with both concrete-lined and unlined earth sections, to have a capacity of 5,000 cu. ft. per second that gradually decreases to 2,000 cu. ft. per second at its terminus. “Subsidence in the area, caused by pumping excess groundwater faster than it can be recharged, has caused parts of the canal to subside [or sink],” states the project web page. “This negatively affects the canal’s ability to convey water, reducing the canal’s capacity. When the land elevation lowers, the canal must be operated at a reduced flow to ensure that water does not overflow banks, thereby restricting the ability to make full water deliveries. The diminished capacity … has resulted in up to 300,000 acre-feet of reduced water deliveries in certain water years with effects most

prominent in the middle reach of the canal [milepost 88 to milepost 12].” The canal, part of the Central Valley Project’s Friant Division, is owned by the federal government, with the Friant Water Authority operating and maintaining it via a contract with Reclamation. “The [project] will restore conveyance capacity from the current estimated 1,600 cubic-feet-per-second to the original 4,000 cubic-feet-per-second in the most critical area near the Deer Creek check structure [milepost 103].” “Without the canal,” said Former Republican Congressman Devin Nunes, “over one million acres of rich farmland would be put out of production, devastating families and farmers in the Valley’s eastside.” Reclamation signed the Record of Decision for the project in November 2020, and Oct. 7, 2021, awarded a contract to the JV through a best-value competitive bid process overseen and managed by Reclamation. Although the contract will be managed by Reclamation, FWA and Reclamation are working jointly with the JV to implement construction. CEG

Oregon Logging Conference Returns for 84th Edition The 84th Annual Oregon Logging Conference was held at the Lane Event Center and Fairgrounds in Eugene, Ore., from Feb. 24 to 26, 2022. After celebrating the OLC in a scaled-down version in 2021, many positive comments were made this year about being able to gather inperson. Conference Manager Rikki Wellman said this year there was more equipment on display outdoors compared to previous years. And while paid registration was slightly down from the previous year, there was no dip in attendance with many industry professionals and members of the public participating in the OLC. Keynote speaker Blake Manley shared his insight and success in engaging and encouraging young men and women to consider careers in the logging and forestry industries. Manley, a natural resources teacher at Sweet Home High School, is creator of the Manley Jobs career video YouTube series. He also is chair of the Oregon Natural Resources Teachers Association and a logger. Manley also was the speaker at the annual Desserts for Dreams luncheon, where he suggested ways to continue reaching out to young women and men with information about the logging and other natural resource industries. The charity selected by Oregon Logging Conference First Lady Wendi Melcher to receive proceeds from the event was the Sweet Home High School Forestry Club, which will receive more than $10,000.
