NAWIC, Safe Site Check In Report Rise in Jobs for Women The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) and Safe Site Check In announced the results of a workforce survey of more than 700 women in construction. Among the key findings is that job opportunities for women in construction are on the rise. When provided with a multiple choice question, “The opportunities for women in construction are increasing, decreasing or about the same,” 71 percent of respondents agree the opportunities are increasing. Another 28 percent believe they are about the same while one percent report the opportunities are decreasing. “Now is a great time for women to work in construction. There are more job opportunities across a variety of professional, trade and administration fields and the gender pay gap is significantly smaller. On average, women in construction earn 99.1 percent of their male colleagues,” said Crissy Ingram, executive director, NAWIC. When it comes to equality in the workplace, participants were asked, “On a scale of 1-100, how does your employer rank in treating men and women equally?” While more than half of the participants ranked their employer at 80 or above, the survey results indicate room for improvement as evidenced by the following responses: • 24 percent ranked their employer at 100 • 22 percent ranked their employer at 90 or above • 13 percent ranked their employer between 80-89 • 11 percent ranked their employer between 79-70 • 6 percent ranked their employer between 69-60 • 24 percent ranked their employer below 60 Long-term Impact of Pandemic on Construction COVID-19 has impacted the workload with 32 percent of

respondents working more while 58 percent are working about the same as before the pandemic, and 10 percent report working fewer hours. In response to the question, “Are you concerned about contracting COVID-19 at work?” 70 percent of respondents answered “no” while 30 percent responded “yes.” Additionally, the pandemic has introduced new job site and office protocols. These include technology driven processes as well as traditional approaches to preventing the spread of the virus on job sites. When survey participants were provided multiple choices to the question, “Which of the following COVID-19 safety protocols does your employer enforce?” respondents provided the following answers: • Staying home if you’re feeling sick: 96 percent • Social distancing: 90 percent • Frequent handwashing: 76 percent • Health screenings: 44 percent • Digital check in: 27 percent • Contact tracing: 16 percent Survey participants were then asked, “Which of the new COVID-19 protocols do you think will continue after the pandemic?” The top three responses were frequent handwashing at 75 percent, followed by digital check in and contact tracing, which remained at the same percentages as current protocols. Based on the data, it appears that digital check-in technology, an innovation that resulted from COVID-19, is likely to become part of job site protocols after the pandemic. “We’re not surprised to see digital check-ins become part of post pandemic protocols. Originally developed for secure health screenings and private contact tracing, digital check in

saves hours each day while eliminating paper based processes,” said David Ward, CEO, Safe Site Check In. “Today, we’re seeing construction businesses use digital check in to assign tasks, locations, and supervisors to employees upon arrival, support facilities planning, and reconcile invoices with hours worked.” Other protocols are likely to be relaxed. Social distancing dropped from 90 percent to 22 percent, staying home if you’re feeling sick plummeted 88 points to 8 percent, and health screenings decreased by half, going from 44 to 22 percent. Survey Participants In celebration of Women In Construction Week, being held March 7 to 13, the survey was conducted in February 2021 and 718 NAWIC members participated. Survey participants represent all areas of the construction industry across private and public sectors. Job titles and roles include: CSuite executives (CEO, COO, CFO), vice presidents, business owners, attorneys, accounting, administration, appraisers, architects, draftsman, electricians, engineers, estimators, HVAC technicians, inspectors, interior design, HR, pipefitters, plumbers, project managers, roofers, safety officers, sales, schedulers, welders and more. The majority of survey participants, 49 percent, have been working in construction for 16 or more years. Those with 11 to 15 years and 6 to 10 years of experience were equally split at 15 percent for each category, followed by 21 percent having worked in construction five years or less. Additionally, 57 percent work in the office, 40 percent work both in the office and the field, and 3 percent work solely in the field. 

Volvo to Invest $4.3M in North American Training Facility Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) is making a major investment in technical training facilities and programs with the addition of a $4.3 million training center in Shippensburg, Pa. Upon its planned opening by the end of 2022, the facility will provide a space to develop and deliver in-person and virtual trainings and will be at the highest caliber of training sites in the equipment industry, according to the manufacturer. “This investment demonstrates Volvo CE’s commitment to our dealers and customers as well as the future of the construction industry,” said Stephen Roy, president of Region North America, Volvo CE. “Equipment and technology are constantly changing and improving. These training opportunities will help prepare new technicians for successful careers and help veteran technicians keep up with the latest developments.” The training facility will be an extension to the Volvo CE Customer Center at the company’s North American headquarters. Opened in 2014, the Customer Center sits on 40 acres with a full machine demonstration

area used for dealer and customer events. The $4.3 million expansion will include the addition of several new machine bays, classrooms and a virtual lab used for creating and hosting virtual trainings. Training will primarily be for Volvo dealer technicians, but it will benefit customers who visit Shippensburg by providing a holistic view of what the company is doing to support their operations with training for operators and technicians, plant tours, the ability to interact

with Volvo CE experts and more. The world-class training center will include technical courses on equipment as well as productivity and uptime services, such as the Volvo Assist programs and ActiveCare Direct managed telematics program. There also will be training and demonstrations on electric machines, automation and connectivity. The virtual lab will allow for the use of video, augmented reality and other technologies to support

dynamic virtual training courses for dealers throughout the United States and Canada. “This investment to our Customer Center puts our training staff closer to the equipment and technologies, and it emphasizes to technicians the importance of customer productivity and uptime,” Roy said. “Today’s techs must learn both the ‘nuts and bolts’ as well as the connected systems.” Construction is expected to begin later this year and finish in late 2022. When it is opened, the facility will be a center of competence for technical training and the cornerstone of Volvo CE’s technician training strategy. The Shippensburg training center is part of a larger strategy to invest in in-person and virtual training throughout North America. More details on those efforts will be announced later this year. “This isn’t just an investment in the construction industry, but also in the local communities where we’re growing and in our North American presence,” Roy said. ADOT, Crews Work to Replace I-40 Bridges Over Business 40 The Arizona Department of Transportation is starting a project to replace the Interstate 40 bridges over Business 40, which connects the interstate to Historic Route 66 in west Flagstaff. The project, which is approximately 3 mi. west of the junction with Interstate 17, will replace the east- and westbound bridges on I40 in their entirety. This will require closures of the eastbound on- and off-ramps, as well as the crossroad under the bridges continuing through October. Traffic will be detoured to Flagstaff Ranch Road to access I-40. “This project continues our work to replace and rehabilitate I-40 bridges in the Flagstaff area,” said Audra Merrick, district engineer of the Northcentral District. “Through this work, we can extend the lives of these bridges and keep commerce flowing along this vital corridor.” Throughout construction, a minimum of one lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained. The project is anticipated

to be completed by fall 2022. Over the last few years, ADOT has replaced or rehabilitated several I-40 bridges in the Flagstaff area, including the I-40 bridges over Beulah Boulevard and over I17 as well as the Fourth Street bridge in east Flagstaff. Work to replace the Rio de Flag Bridge on Business 40 in Flagstaff is currently under construction. ADOT has also replaced the Bellemont bridges at I-40 and Hughes Avenue, formerly Transwestern Road, west of Flagstaff and the bridges on I-40 at Meteor City Road, east of Flagstaff. 

Behind Ireland’s Final Rebellion and … an American Dream By Michael Gerard SPECIAL TO CEG

Construction people like to read about machinery and many of them like to read about other subjects, too — like history and war and such. Some people who make and sell machinery also like to write books and sometimes a writer comes out of this mix who can combine history, war and actual machinery into their books. I am such a writer — I played Cowboys and Indians around sandpit machinery as a child in my native Ireland. Little did I know at the time that this type of machinery would one day be my livelihood and I would set up a business in South Carolina doing just that — Sand Science. My new book ‘Ireland’s Final Rebellion and An American Dream’ is a two-book set. Book 1 is about the rebellion that succeeded in winning Irish freedom and the founding of The Irish Free State in 1921 — this year we celebrate the 100th anniversary of that great event. The protagonist in this book is based on my own father’s life and his involvement in the Tan War of 1919-1921. My dad was an unassuming tailor, tall and straight, who always wore a shirt and tie and smoked Carroll’s cigarettes. He was 57 when I saw the light as the youngest of his five children. We were a poor family among poor neighbors in rural County Mayo, Ireland. During my childhood, the introduction of cheap ready-made suits were destroying the livelihood of the tailor, but dad worked at his bench every day, making clothes or doing alterations for customers. From an early age, I knew that he had been an active

fighter during the 1919-1921 Irish War of Independence, and he received a small state pension for that service. He did not like to talk much about his participation in the conflict and deflected my questions about ‘The Tan War,’ saying he would tell me more when I was older. I did hear enough in familycircle conversation and from listening in on the regular get-togethers of his Old IRA comrades at our tailor shop to form my own picture of his life. Born as the second of eight children in 1897, he grew up in a turbulent period of Irish history — the high emigration aftermath of The Great Famine, the tail end of The Land Wars tied to the Land League, World War 1 and the 1916 Easter Rising. He was very close with his grandmother who lived into Michael “Gerry” Gerard her late 90s. She was a Seanachie (Gaelic storyteller) who spoke only Gaelic and I was left with only memories and unanand filled his head with the feats of the mys- swered questions. One of those memories tic warrior heroes of Irish Legend, and the was that of his expressed regret at not having torturous Irish history of the previous few emigrated to America like many of his war centuries. He became active in various comrades did. At his funeral, I decided that I would resistance movements (the IRB, Irish Volunteers and Sinn Fein) when the Irish make good on his missed opportunity — I population was revulsed by the summary would someday emigrate to America. Book executions of dozens of Irish Rebels from 2 is based on my long journey — having to the failed 1916 Rising. Subsequently he grow up in a hurry when my father died, I became a full-time IRA fighter on the run worked my way through college and set off during the 1919-1921 campaign and fought on my quest for the Holy Grail — America. After various jobs around Ireland, I found without capture up to the declaration of the truce. He was vehemently Anti-Treaty but my way back to the sandpit machinery. I worked for ment camp in The Curragh, Co Kildare took a toll on his health, and he was close to death them all when the prisoners’ hunger strike was finally called off. After his release, he returned to his tailor trade and eventually married and raised a family. He died suddenly in April 1969

over England and then spent some years based in South Africa selling into the vast mining market there, all the while looking for my opportunity to go to America. That chance finally came, and my wife and I arrived in South Carolina in January 1985 and we started from scratch. It was a baptism of fire as I struggled to understand their Southern accent and they struggled to keep up with my fast-talking Irish brogue. My target prospects were mostly using large static machinery in the sand mines and quarries, and ever so politely told me that they had no place for my small portable equipment. Being that I was in the Bible belt, I set my sights on a biblical theme to win them over — ‘instead of bringing the mountain to Mohammad, why not bring Mohammad to the mountain.’ We took our portable screening machines right up to the sandbank face, and instead of the mine owner hauling product to his stationary processing plant, we got his customer to haul the screened material across his pit for him and over his scales. The rest is history (as the saying goes) and brings us back to the double history lesson of the book. Over the years, we have built a successful processing machinery business that today serves the greater southeast region of America. Our two American-born sons joined the business after graduating from the University of South Carolina and are already helping to expand it to new heights. Despite the pressures of running this business, I have managed to find the time (that see IRELAND page 28

Atlas Tree Surgery Inc. Launches New Era of Tree Care Rich Kingsborough is feeling pretty good about his growing fleet of green machines. Since receiving his first Sennebogen tree care handler in August of last year, he has added six more machines, and more are on the way. For Kingsborough, this specialized fleet means more than added capacity and new projects for his company, Atlas Tree Surgery Inc. “The most important thing,” he said, “is that Sennebogen has proven to perfectly align with our company mission: To elevate the standard of our industry through safety, training and innovation.” Safety, Productivity Through Innovation Kingsborough emphasized that he’s looking ahead to the future of his industry as a whole, not just his own business. He knows trees better than most: many industry pros recognize him from past years as a nationally ranked competitive tree climber. He has been operating Atlas for 39 years and has even developed his own academy to train climbers, ground crew and equipment operators. “Two years ago, we were at the TCI Expo in Charlotte, N.C., looking for innovative ways to increase efficiency. “I’ve always been a big fan of utilizing equipment to assist in our work. We looked at grapple saw trucks but their trouble is, after you cut, the tree part just drops into the branches below, which causes breakage and creates a safety hazard. I knew that wasn’t going to work for us. We needed something that could cut and hold the tree part and bring it safely to the ground.” Coincidentally, Sennebogen’s head office wasn’t far from the site of the show, and the manufacturer was inviting attendees to demonstrations of its new tree care line. Game-Changer for Industry “I got excited as soon as I saw the Sennebogen,” Kingsborough said. “I knew they were going to be gamechangers for our industry.” He reached out to some of the east coast companies who were already working with the tree care handlers and they confirmed what he had seen at the demo. And he knew what he wanted to do with this equipment. “We stuck our neck out with our first Sennebogen, even before we got the work for it. We were looking at a really large project we wanted to take on — big enough to keep all of these machines busy. But we knew that, even if the other job didn’t come through, there would be enough other work for at least one machine.” In fact, Atlas didn’t win that first job, but with its new Sennebogen 718 M, Kingsborough’s team could go after several other large projects. And those bids have been successful.

Removing burned out trees from wooded areas is an ideal job for Atlas’ 718.

“We have been growing over the past couple years. One of the reasons for that was the catastrophic fires that burned through here in California. Also, by expanding in different areas, we opened up different Atlas divisions for larger rightof-way and commercial jobs. We’re up from 50 employees to 200, still looking for more to recruit and train. And our Sennebogen are now in the field.” Purpose-Built for Tree Care Atlas currently is operating five wheeled Sennebogen 718 M machines, along with one of the larger 738 M models, and it recently received its first crawler-mounted 718 R-HD unit. The 718 is a 47,180 lb. (21,400 kg) purpose-built tree care machine equipped with a hydraulic grapple saw attached to its 43 ft. (13 m) telescoping boom. With a lifting capacity of up to 12,000 lbs. (5,500 kg), its powerful hydraulics are finetuned for precise tree surgery, while its grapple saw can grip and cut branches or whole trees. The business end is operated from inside the 718’s high-rise, tilting Maxcab operator station, which can elevate the operator for an unobstructed view into the work zone. Unlike the grapple saw trucks Kingsborough had been considering, the 718 can swing through 360-degrees to grab and cut, then carefully set aside the cut limbs, to size and stack logs or brush, or even feed the material directly into a chipper or grinder, according to the manufacturer. The 738 is the same idea but bigger. Twice the size of the 718, the 738 extends its reach to 75 ft. (23 m) while, according to operators, it handles with the same fluidity, the same precision, the same fast cycle times as its smaller version.

Safer Work in Less Time The difference on the job site is remarkable. Kingsborough related his first project using the 738. “We had a row of about 100 eucalyptus trees; about 120 to 150 ft. high. Branches were stretching over two lanes of a major roadway, so we couldn’t just cut and drop. Typically, we would have had two climbers up in the tree, and a 100-ton or larger crane to bring the tree down. With the 738, we completed the job in less time, using fewer people, without a crane, and we didn’t have to put one climber in the tree. Anytime you can take a climber out of the tree you have made the job safer. “Up to now, we would have planned for about 10 crew on the job site. The most we ever had there was up to five. We scheduled two months for the job, and we got it done in about six weeks.” Much of Atlas’ fire response work is completed from the roadside, where the 718 can dismantle and stack a stand of trees, then quickly drive on to the next position. The new tracked unit is intended for off-road projects, where they excel, but Kingsborough reported that the wheeled 718s perform much better in off-road conditions than he expected. Better Conditions for Demanding Jobs The biggest impact of the Sennebogens, however, has been on Atlas’ employees. “Tree-climbing is one of the hardest jobs in the world,” said Kingsborough. “Guys get fatigued. The more people you have on the site, and the longer they work, the chance of injury just increases. I have guys who have been with me for over 30 years and are still out there doing it. I’m excited to know these machines can prolong the career of the climber. “It’s not only time-saving, it’s effort-saving. The Sennebogens will let them continue in the industry that they love for longer. Not every climber is cut out to move into sales or management; they like doing the work. This type of equipment makes a really dangerous job a lot easier and safer. “Our operators love it. You should see the smiles after they first had the opportunity to train on a 718 and run it. After their initial training, in 2 weeks you could see that they were getting the hang of it. After a month, our guys have really started to shine on it.” Kingsborough noted that all the operators he has trained, to date, have had prior experience as a climber, or operating logging equipment. “There’s a larger learning curve required to understand cuts, weights, what a tree’s going to do after you cut it. It’s very beneficial to have a background in tree work before you jump onto one of these machines.” For more information, visit www.sennebogen-na.com. 

States Make Effort to Revive XL Keystone Pipeline Project BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) Attorneys general from 21 states sued to overturn President Joe Biden’s cancellation of the contentious Keystone XL oil pipeline from Canada. Led by Ken Paxton of Texas and Austin Knudsen of Montana, the states said Biden

had overstepped his authority when he revoked the permit for the Keystone pipeline on his first day in office. Because the line would run through multiple U.S. states, Congress should have the final say over whether it’s built, according to the lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Texas. Construction on the 1,200-mi. (1,930-km) pipeline began last year when former President Donald Trump revived the longdelayed project after it had stalled under the Obama administration. It would move up to 830,000 barrels (35 million gallons) of crude daily from the oil sand fields of western Canada to Steele City, Neb., where it would connect to other pipelines that feed oil refineries on the U.S. Gulf Coast. Biden cancelled its permit over longstanding concerns that burning oil sands crude would make climate change worse. Some moderate Democratic lawmakers also have urged Biden to reverse his decision, including Sens. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Jon Tester of Montana. 

Firm’s Defect-Detection AI Reaches Near Engineering Level Bridge Assessments Dynamic Infrastructure completed a controlled assessment of its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities that detected defects on bridges around the world. Bridges from Florida and Maryland, Australia and Sweden were analyzed by the company’s AI platform for AASHTO defects. The outcome was compared to inspections carried out by certified engineers and the results were nothing less than groundbreaking – nearly 91 percent of true defects and more than 99 percent of defects categorized as condition state 3 and 4, were detected in just a fraction (0.05 percent) of the time it would take trained engineers. “The new generation of our AI capabilities allows us to break previous boundaries to support engineers with effective and credible AI technology. We proved that thousands of images can be automatically analyzed, making

them available for final validation by engineers in minutes, not days or weeks,” noted Alon Oring, Dynamic Infrastructure’s AI head. “During the controlled assessment, we analyzed photos of concrete and steel bridges of various ages and in different climate conditions. Our detection model proved to be robust and consistent. “Our any-source analysis capabilities, together with the platform’s automatic historical comparisons, enables us to track every defect throughout its history. Quantifying risk and understanding evolving deterioration are now much easier through digital and visual accessibility of asset images. Inventory managers should not think twice before uploading any number of photos to the system. We know how to quickly and accurately extract information, detect flaws and evaluate and manage risk.”

The amount of digital information captured throughout the lifetime of an asset is becoming a huge burden, instead of an opportunity, when decisions need to be made concerning asset inventories. With decades of engineering experience working for PPPs and DOTs, and with the power of artificial intelligence, Dynamic Infrastructure offers operation and maintenance managers a fast, accurate and trusted services platform to execute small or large digital tasks, according to the company. Headquartered in New York, N.Y., with offices in Germany and Israel, Dynamic Infrastructure facilitates the execution of digital jobs for bridges, dams, tunnels, walls and large civil infrastructures around the globe while meeting international and local standards and regulation. Author Combines History, Machinery, War in Book Honoring 100th Anniversary of Irish IRELAND from page 12

means late night and early morning hours) to explore my writing hobby. I wrote and published ‘The Kimberley File’ several years ago, a novel about an unwitting machinery salesman in South Africa caught up in the world of illegal diamonds. That story takes place mostly in the southern countries of Africa, with part of the story unfolding in Ireland. It has taken me many years to find a suitable narrative voice to tell the story of the hard struggle that young Irish women and men like my father endured in The Tan War of 19191921. They finally won the freedom that Irish rebels had fought and died for over 700 years, resulting in the creation of The Irish Free State in 1921, followed immediately by a savage and bloody Civil War between the Pro and Anti Treaty forces. The objective of Book 1 ‘Just One of the Boys’ was to use the fictional Kane family to portray the events in Irish history that propelled ordinary Irish men and women to take up arms in 1919 and fight the occupying British authorities to a standstill and to the negotiating table. It was these fearless fighters and the general population of Ireland who shel-

tered and cared for them, that secured the Irish victory — they are the unsung heroes that I wanted to highlight and raise to their rightful place. I thought it fitting to continue the Kane family history theme to the fulfillment of my father’s dream with Book 2 ‘An American Dream.’ In this book, Sean Kane portrays my own life journey as I pursued that dream. An Irish Catholic landing into the heart of the Bible belt of the American South certainly added up to a personal and business challenge, but we were blessed, and it worked out fine — we continue to live and work and prosper in this great country. ‘Ireland’s Final Rebellion and An American dream’ was published through KDP Amazon on March 1, 2021, and is available on Amazon.com as both an e-book and paperback. It is an enjoyable read, especially around St. Patrick’s Day and during these trying times that we are all going through. Mecalac Adds Five Dealers in 2020, Expands NA Network Mecalac, a global designer, manufacturer and distributor of compact construction equipment for urban environments, welcomed five North American dealers to its network in 2020. The new dealers significantly expand Mecalac’s coverage across the eastern United States, as well as provide a toehold for the company on the West Coast and in several key Canadian markets. These partnerships increase access and customer support for existing Mecalac customers, and help bring the company’s innovative lineup to new regions across the United States, Canada and Latin America. “Mecalac is always looking for innovative ways to address industry challenges and improve our customers’ productivity,” said Peter Bigwood, general manager of Mecalac North America. “We aren’t happy with the status quo, and believe our dealers shouldn’t be either. We’re building relationships with dealers who believe in our approach, share our values and aren’t afraid of new

solutions. We’re excited about our growing North American network and look forward to increasing access to Mecalac products and services across the continent.” Helping connect Mecalac with contractors in central Pennsylvania is Wood’s CRW Corporation. With nearly 60 years of industry experience, this relationship-driven heavy equipment distributor services the northeastern United States through locations in Vermont, Massachusetts, New York and in Carlisle, Pa. Illinois-based Hall Equipment will help with sales and service for contractors in the greater St. Louis region. Hall specializes in excavation equipment and has more than 20 years of experience in the construction, aggregate and mining industries. Trekker Group will expand Mecalac’s coverage throughout Florida. The group originated in Puerto Rico more than 66 years ago and reached mainland United States in 2010. enced parts department and a wide range of equipment rental machines. The family-owned dealership has been serving the Southern California heavy construction market for nearly 50 years with two locations. Gear Equipment is dedicated to bringing new technology to Canadian contractors, making it an ideal partner for Mecalac. Through

locations in Ontario and soon in British Columbia, Gear Equipment will offer Mecalac’s complete range of compact and powerful excavators, both tracked and wheeled, as well as loaders and site dumpers. “As a relatively new player in the North American market, we’re working hard to make a lasting first impression,” Bigwood said. “We believe in the game-changing productivity of our machines. Our dealers do, too. Together, we’ll help every contractor in North America recognize the extraordinary versatility Mecalac machines provide.” Each of these new dealers will work with Mecalac to provide customers the most efficient and ideal machine for the job at hand. Their offerings include Mecalac’s line of crawler skid-excavators — the MCR Series — as well as the company’s MWR Series of wheeled excavators and AS Series swing loaders. Known for Crawler Carriers, Prinoth Also Makes Attachments Prinoth is well-known for its crawler carriers but also manufactures a wide range of mulching equipment and carriers. As a cutting-edge company where the latest developments and innovations in agriculture and forest management are, Prinoth continuously invests in developing high quality products including the latest excavator attachment, the M450e-1090. High Stability, Durability at Low Weight The M450e-1090 suits a wide range of excavators from 8.8 to 16.5 tons, as well as carrier vehicles with booms up to maximum 90 hp and thus expands the capacity of the M450e-900 mulcher. The power requirement is reduced by two-stage counter cutting at the material inlet, which prevents the rotor from being blocked by large pieces of wood drawn in. Due to the gear motors used in this model, no leakage oil line is required, so the machine can be attached to any excavator boom without additional conversion measures: “Plug & Mulch”. Mulching Heads for All Standard Excavator Models Prinoth offers the complete range between 6 to 30 tons. Its M450e-900 for 6 to 12 tons, the M450e-1100 for 12 to 18 tons and the M550e-1300 for 18 to 30 tons excavators. For universal use with carrier vehicles from 12 to 18 tons, the M450e-1100 offers a hydraulic variable displacement motor and the one-sided rotor drive characterizes a nearly maintenance-free power belt drive. The robust design of the machine and the innovative concept of counter-blades reduce power requirement and guarantee the best performance, according to the manufacturer. With a special customized mounting bracket, it is instantly ready for simple implementation on a Sennebogen 718e, for example. The M550-1300 is the biggest mulching head in this range and covers excavators from 18 to 30 tons. They all stand for top shredding quality, maximum safety and simple handling. Takeuchi-US Introduces New Full Line of Attachments Takeuchi-US, a manufacturer of compact equipment, has launched the Takeuchi Attachment Program. This new program offers a full line of Takeuchi-branded attachments for each of the manufacturer’s product lines — compact excavators, compact track loaders and compact wheel loaders. “Attachments represent a significant sales opportunity for our dealers while also improving their customers’ productivity and return on investment,” said Scott Utzman, manager of the Takeuchi Attachment Program. “We designed our program to provide an incredibly broad range of attachments backed by Takeuchi aftersales support, parts availability, a one-year warranty and attractive financing options.” Takeuchi partnered with several marketleading attachment manufacturers to provide attachments in five categories: land and vegetation management; construction management; agriculture management; snow removal; and brooms. Altogether, there are nearly 40 different attachment families available, from buckets to forestry mulchers to snow blades and everything in between. Many attachments come in various models and sizes for the ultimate customized solu-

tion for nearly any machine application. Takeuchi’s full-featured attachments offer standard configurations, including bolt-on cutting edges; connect-under-pressure quick couplers; heavy-duty cylinders; and optimized controls. Performance-matched attachments have flow requirements and operating parameters that are matched to compatible machines for optimal performance. Takeuchi provides optimized hose lengths with connect-under-pressure couplers on hydraulically operated attachments for fast, easy connections. “We chose our attachment manufacturing partners based on numerous factors,” Utzman said. “However, our primary concern was ensuring that their attachment quality mirrors Takeuchi’s machine quality. Many of our customers depend on their Takeuchi machines for their livelihoods, so uptime and productivity are extremely important. We want our customers to know that when they purchase a Takeuchi-branded attachment, they’re getting the same level of quality and dependability that they’ve come to expect from us over the years.” For more information, visit takeuchius.com/attachments. 

Werk-Brau Introduces Extreme Duty Excavator Buckets for Tough Conditions New Werk-Brau extreme duty excavator buckets feature an aggressive dig angle, rugged construction of abrasion resistant AR400 through AR500 steel, and horizontal wear strips, to effectively excavate in the toughest conditions. Designed for durability and effectiveness, even in brutal conditions, they are made in the USA with industry leading lead times. Standard sizes available from 3/8 to 10 cu. yds. in various widths, with special designs and capacities available on request. Werk-Brau extreme duty excavator buckets are ideal for demolition work, shot rock, abrasive applications, moderate prying and when paired with a thumb — material handling. The cutter bit is made from extreme duty T-1 material and all critical or high wear components utilize AR400 through AR500 steel for strength and durability. By starting with robust, dependable materials, the bucket is designed for heavy duty action and able to endure excessive wear and tear. In addition to strong materials, the design of the bucket also was made with durability in mind. Horizontal wear stripes and an extra thick cutting edge backed by a wear plate that covers the entire bucket bottom ensure greater endurance. Side wear plates protect high wear areas to extend the buckets’ operational lifetime. An aggressive dig angle allows the bucket to more easily tear through earth and materials to scoop faster and more efficiently. In addition, tapered side plates are engineered to reduce wear and allow for easier dumping.

The bucket also is equipped with industry standard teeth for extra durability. The tooth size can be increased to tolerate more extreme digging applications. A selection of quality brand teeth is available to choose from. Box rippers also can be installed upon request. The tip radius on the severe duty excavator bucket is to or within O.E.M. specifications so it can be used with any standard excavator. Werk-Brau manufactures a complete line of OEM and replacement attachments for excavators, mini excavators, backhoes, mini and full-size loaders, and crawler loaders. ers. Over the years and across the different series and model names, that basic design has changed as the company innovates. Today, it is called the SX Series, encompassing many axle configurations, lengths, materials and other customizable factors. The original intent for the side dump trailers was the construction market, but agricultural, waste, demolition and mining have followed. The Feedlot Series, developed for feedlot operators to haul manure, has garnered high demand in agriculture and mining. The Construction Pup series for site work also has gained market share, presenting an economical alternative to scrapers and haul trucks, from an acquisitional and operational standpoint. SmithCo has a huge presence in the western United States and has sold trailers in every state, including Hawaii and Alaska. Internationally, SmithCo’s product lines are in Canada, South America and the Middle East. Shipping costs put a damper on global sales, but Central and South America’s mining sector have proved to be viable options for SmithCo to compete with local manufacturers. A market analysis the company did a few years ago revealed side dumps only hold a 15 percent share of the dump market. That’s a whole 85 percent that hasn’t experienced SmithCo’s custom solutions, yet. The company employs a marketing approach focusing on Web-based content for those looking for information about side dumps while targeting specific areas within the continental United States where side dumps are a viable option.

SmithCo President and CEO Scott Lovell sees more and more first-time side dump owners, who appreciate the trailer’s versatility.

Efforts include print and digital advertising and hosting demo days with dealers on job sites. SmithCo also provides training to customers on site or through its dealer network. While the company was having a record production year when the coronavirus pandemic hit, the team proactively went into crisis management mode to ensure the supply chain remained intact.

XL Announces New Warranty Policy on Parts, Components XL Specialized Trailers has introduced a new warranty policy: the 5-3-1 policy features full five-year structural coverage, full three-year paint coverage and full one-year coverage on parts and components. The new warranty policy is an enhancement to the previous policy. XL Specialized Trailers are built with 100k flanges and 80k webs. The five-year structural warranty covers the trailer’s structural beams as well as the pin connections between those beams and the crossmembers and outer rails of the load-bearing deck. XL Specialized Trailers’ new paint warranty guarantees no peeling or delamination and cracking or checking of the paint for three years. XL’s trailers are painted with a corrosion-resistant epoxy primer and urethane topcoat. The paint process is rigorously tested to meet strict adhesion and corrosion-resistant ASTM standards. Trailer components are critical to a good user-experience. The full parts and component warranty covers axles, suspension, landing gear and all manufactured compo-

nents as well as air, electrical and hydraulic components for one year. “Our team is excited to introduce a new and improved warranty policy. It is a testament to the positive changes we have made at our company. Over the last two years, XL’s empowered workforce has improved product quality and reduced warranty expense to the point we are extremely confident in offering this higher level of service and support through our warranty program,” said Stuart Sleper, president and CEO of XL Specialized Trailers. “We are aiming to provide customers greater peace of mind by backing our trailers with the best warranty in the industry. We are there for our customers through the entire order process including after the sale.” XL’s new policy is effective on all units invoiced Jan. 1, 2021, and after and starts at the time of retail sale or six months after the trailer is completed. “We reduced inventory to generate cash because cash is key in those situations,” said Lovell. “Our goal was to retain all of our employees and not lay anyone off. We achieved that goal. But after Thanksgiving, the faucet opened up and we got slammed with orders.” The pandemic, however, isn’t the first time Lovell has witnessed SmithCo’s trials. “With growth comes growing pains and we are not immune to anything that any other company that grew fast has gone through,” he said. Making sure the infrastructure of the company keeps up with how fast the company grows is always a problem. “The introduction of an ERP system in 2015 integrating all processes has been a huge benefit to our efficiencies,” he said. An ongoing concern for every manufacturer is dealing with labor needs, and not just hiring, but also retaining the right talent. Another is staying on top of technology and automation so skilled labor and minds can be rechanneled where needed. But 2021 brings forth much optimism and SmithCo has been receiving orders at record levels. Anticipating challenges as the country reopens for business at the start of this year, Lovell said, “Not letting anything fall through the cracks is going to be vital as we go forward, to make sure we don’t run out of components due to supply or delivery issues. It’s our goal to maintain our position in the marketplace. We know where we stand and how we are viewed and we take that very seriously and every day strive to maintain it and improve upon what we do.”  CEG

Supply-Chain Review Will Identify Gaps in Manufacturing ORDER from page 1

pharmaceuticals and critical minerals, including rare earth elements. The goal is to identify gaps in domestic manufacturing and to assess whether manufacturing and national security are “overly reliant on foreign sources, particularly Chinese suppliers,” according to legal intelligence source JD Supra. The EO also calls for a year-long review of supply chains in defense industrial base, public health and biological preparedness, information and communications technology, energy, transportation, and ag commodities and food production. “These reviews will identify and assess critical goods and materials within supply chains, the capabilities needed to produce those materials, and vulnerabilities caused by an inability to develop domestic manufacturing capabilities,” wrote JD Supra. Putting Policy in Context The order is seen as the start of an effort to insulate the American economy from future shortages of critical imported components. Lewis Black, CEO of Almonty, believes the effort takes existing policy and puts it “into context that actually makes more sense than was perhaps all about domestic production, all insulated within borders of U.S.” Headquartered in Toronto, Canada, Almonty is an international raw materials development company. “Biden’s saying having diversity makes good sense, which it does,” said Black. It’s not having all your eggs in one basket, and looking for the best projects that exist domestically or in friendly countries in order to give U.S. manufacturers alternatives to procure the materials they need, he said. “It’s not saying you have to buy from one person. It’s not your patriotic duty to purchase from federal projects,” he said. “It’s the U.S. government saying, ‘What are the options for manufacturers, where do they not have choice, and how can we address that to provide to manufacturers more alternatives.’” The U.S. currently lacks commercial-scale capability to process rare earth permanent magnets used in the automotive, aerospace, defense and electronics industries, according to USA Rare Earth. In 2020, the New York City-based company opened the first rare earth and critical minerals processing facility in the United States. “The Biden Administration is right to examine the criticality of numerous U.S. materials and electronic goods vulnerable to global disruption on a daily basis,” said Pini Althaus, CEO. Under the executive order, federal agencies also must identify key manufacturing locations, the availability of substitute and alternative sources, the state of workforce skills and the role of transportation in supporting these supply chains. JD Supra noted that agencies must then develop and issue recommendations to manage identified vulnerabilities and foster expanded research and development to strengthen these areas. The EO also calls for the executive branch to work with external stakeholders, including industry, labor unions and non-governmental organizations, to fulfill the policy mandates of this order. Black said the EO offers manufactures accessibility to

alternative suppliers. Over the past 30 years, China has positioned itself as the top rare earth materials supplier, noted Black. “Ultimately, it’s one of a number of different products that there are few options American manufacturers can currently select from,” he said. The current manufacturing mindset is “we know diversification makes sense, but it’s so easy to buy from China, we’ll deal with [diversification] next week.” But America is realizing the need to at least see what the current situation is, the alternatives available, and what makes good sense for manufacturing, said Black. “This is a first step American manufacturers have to deal with. I think that ultimately you’ll have to go where you have the best project that meets your needs.” Specifically, Australia, South Korea and Taiwan are solid sources for semiconductor manufacturers, said Black. But the industry should not look for merely a cost-saving source, because a reliable supplier has to be cost-competitive and vetted by the U.S. government. “There is a whole series of criteria that have to be met,” said Black, Strategic metals are very valuable globally, he said, and China has ultimately developed a supplier niche. “As consumption continues to increase, the fragility of the U.S. supply chain shows.” In the semiconductor market, any deviance from expected demand can cause a ripple effect in the supply chain and cause havoc, said Black. “It’s extraordinary how close to the bone we play it.” Boosting Home Production Recycling available materials and beefing-up domestic supply of rare earth materials also are on the table. Black stressed that recycling is a part of the industry’s overall approach to sustainability. “In tungsten production, we know in good times when demand is strong, recycling can account for up to 50 percent of feeder stock required,” he said. But, Black cautions, recyclability is not reliable long-term. People become competitive, prices go up and ultimately it’s not a dependable source, he said. “Recycling, always, should be alongside raw materials. Raw primarily, and recycling as a sustainable source.” He compares recycling rare earth materials to the balance

sought in carbon emissions. “Companies have some sectors that are carbon polluting and carbon negative. That is combined for a balanced footprint. Recycling is seen in the same vein.” Where domestic supply is concerned, Black believes President Biden will consider every avenue including export from allied countries. “Opening a good project is better than opening a project because of convenience. You can’t open a mine in a year,” he said. In fact, the whole process of planning, financing, developing and commissioning a rare earth material mine is a fiveto seven-year project. “It’s not exactly a vote-winner,” admitted Black. “Nobody wants one in their backyard even though 21stcentury mines are non-invasive.” Almonty operates the world’s largest tungsten mine in South Korea “and there’s nothing on surface — no waste, no tailings,” said Black. Mines are in compliance now, and international standards are far more sensitive to the environment these days, he said. But it creates a terrible image in people’s minds, he admitted. The mining industry “needs a makeover, because nobody wants one in their backyard. We all have a horror story in mind of what we’ve seen on TV.” Those projects were either poorly maintained or from a bygone era, said Black. “President Biden has given himself better options to find the best project and then go through the bid process.” Black believes the EO’s outcome will ultimately prove extremely positive. “In outsourcing, the industry will begin insourcing instead,” he said. The process will shift a great deal of work back either domestically or to friendly countries who can benefit American manufacturers, he said. “It’s a great positive. Mines are very labor intensive. For every direct job, it creates another six indirect jobs.” Domestic Perspective USA Rare Earth LLC and Texas Mineral Resources Corp. praised Biden’s directive. They believe the assessments reiterate the importance of U.S. national assets in providing the technology metals needed for the next century of innovation and infrastructure. USA Rare Earth is the funding and development partner of the Round Top Heavy Rare Earth, Lithium and Critical Minerals Project in Hudspeth County, West Texas. It acquired the former Hitachi Metals America neodymium iron boron permanent magnet manufacturing equipment in North Carolina. The company plans to re-site and recommission the equipment so the facility will produce approximately 17 percent of the U.S. permanent magnet demand. The magnets also will be used for electric vehicle motors. Currently, no other NdFeB permanent magnet manufacturing plant is operational in the Americas. Pini Althaus, CEO, said “we applaud President Biden’s urgency to assess and build additional U.S. capacity across the transportation, energy and defense industrial base.” He said rare earths and critical minerals, including lithium, are essential to modern technology. These minerals “require a robust, resilient strategy for U.S. advanced manufacturing and national security,” said Althaus.  CEG
