The USA Parkway was originally a privately built, 6-mi. (9.6 km)-long road connecting Interstate 80 to the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center east of Sparks. The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) began construction in June 2016 to extend the Parkway by more than 12 mi. (19.3 km) to reach U.S. 50 near Silver Springs. The approximately 18-mi. (29 km)-long, four-lane state roadway between Interstate 80 and U.S. 50 will further link the greater Reno/Sparks and Fernley/Fallon areas with the U.S. 50 Silver Springs corridor, enhancing regional mobility and creating an additional route for commuter, freight and other traffic. The road also will help support regional economic development and serve as another route in the event of emergency or weather-related road closures. NDOT thoroughly assessed five potential roadway see NDOT page 22

The U.S. Department of Transportation in a new “conditions and performance” report estimates that the backlog of needed highway and transit infrastructure projects has reached $926 billion, and that many billions more will be needed in the next 20 years to keep up with demand. The congressionally mandated biennial report “identifies an $836 billion backlog of unmet capital investment needs for highways and bridges,” the USDOT said, and $90 billion more for transit systems. The Trump administration has described a plan to generate an estimated $1 trillion in overall infrastructure investment over the next decade, much of it by incentivizing much more private spending on projects. However, that total was for varied types of infrastructure and the USDOT report indicates that the backlog for highway and transit projects alone is nearly that great, separate from other transportation modes and from other types of infrastructure needs. Elaine Chao, President Trump’s nominee to be transportation secretary, told senators in her confirmation hearing that a

task force will shape the details of its plan, in concert with members of Congress from both parties. She also indicated support for added direct federal funding as well as private finance. Former U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said the new conditions report shows that “we have an infrastructure system that is fundamental to the nation’s economic health, and it needs greater attention and resources.” see USDOT page 8

ConocoPhillips Alaska has made a new oil discovery in the Greater Mooses Tooth (GMT) Unit located in the northeastern portion of the National Petroleum Reserve–Alaska (NPRA). The Willow discovery wells, Tiŋmiaq 2 and 6, were drilled in early 2016 and encountered 72 ft. and 42 ft. (22 m and 13 m) of net pay, respectively, in the Brookian Nanushuk formation. ConocoPhillips has a 78 percent working interest in the discovery and Anadarko Petroleum holds the remaining 22 percent. The two discovery wells lie about 28 mi. (45 km) west of the Alpine Central Facility, and are approximately 4 mi. (6.4 km) apart. The Tiŋmiaq 2 well was tested and established good reservoir deliverability with a sustained 12-hour test rate of 3,200 bpd of 44degree API oil. Initial technical estimates indicate the discovery could have recoverable resource potential in excess of 300 MMbbl of oil. Appraisal of the discovery will commence in January 2017 with the acquisition of see OIL page 8

ED’s Summit & CONDEX welcomed attendees to the Windy City for an unforgettable conference from Jan. 10 to 13. This year, the Summit saw many changes and milestones for AED as an organization, which led to an event that was incredibly successful from AED’s and its members’ standpoint. Attendance for this event was at an all-time high for a ConExpo year, and the Summit brought out many old and new faces at the Hyatt Regency Chicago. Attendees benefited from several networking parties, such as the new AED Foundation Fundraising Gala and 10th annual live auction presented by The AED Foundation and Ritchie Bros. that raised record-breaking donations to enhance the success of dealerships for years to come. This year’s event also included professional dealer education sessions on Jan. 10, for the first time. Education sessions, like the ones AED provides

during the Summit, create more opportunities and time to learn about issues pertaining to the construction equipment industry. As the only event with education that caters specifically toward dealers, AED wanted to give its attendees as many possibilities to attend sessions that would benefit their growth. These sessions were separated by tracks, including executive leadership development, people management, product support, sales and the customer experience, customer engagement, small dealer and rental, which created an opportunity for attendees to grow develop their skills. The keynote speakers provided different points of view on leadership and success and how these qualities can come in different forms. Richard Picciotto, the highest-ranking New York firefighter to survive the 9/11 attacks, discussed how bravery and courage come into play in careers. Daymond John of ABC’s “Shark

Former Vice President Dick Cheney gave an in-depth discussion of climbing the political ladder, starting his career working with Donald Rumsfeld. He shared anecdotes about his time at Yale and working with Rumsfeld that kept the crowd laughing. He also gave insight into running the country during times of devastation as vice president during 9/11, and sharing somber stories Chulick (L), president, and John Paraschak, both about that day, which made everybody Frank of Stewart-Amos Sweeper Co. contemplate a difficult time in American history. AED is already looking forward to the 2018 Summit in Las Vegas at The Mirage, which will run from Jan. 15 to 19. ConocoPhillips Finds Oil OIL from page 1

state-of-the-art 3D seismic. Subject to appraisal results and the choice of development scenario, Willow could produce up to 100,000 bopd. Assuming timely permit approvals and competitive project economics, initial commercial production could occur as early as 2023. “This discovery is tremendously exciting not only for ConocoPhillips, but also for the state of Alaska,” said Joe Marushack, president, ConocoPhillips Alaska. “Willow’s proximity to existing infrastructure improves the economic viability of the discovery. Development of Willow, a potential multibillion-dollar investment, could provide thousands of jobs during construction and could generate substantial revenue for the federal government, state, North Slope Borough, and communities in the NPRA.” In a follow-up to the Willow discovery, ConocoPhillips and its bidding partner, Anadarko, were successful in December’s federal lease sale on the western North Slope, winning 65 tracts for a total of 594,972 gross acres. ConocoPhillips independently was successful in December’s state lease sale on the western North Slope, winning 74 tracts for a total of 142,280 gross acres. “The Willow discovery adds to our history of exploration success in the NPRA and is consistent with our focused global exploration strategy,” commented Richard Lunam, president of exploration, business

development and other international for ConocoPhillips. “The acreage acquired in the recent state and federal lease sales gives us running room to test the concepts that led to Willow and other NPRA discoveries.” Besides exploration activities, ConocoPhillips continues to make substantial investments in new projects on the North Slope. In 2016, the company approved additional drilling at CD5, contracted with Doyon Drilling for a new-build extended reach drilling rig, and commissioned two new rigs for the Kuparuk River Unit. This winter, construction will begin at GMT1, a drill site eight miles west of CD5. The cost to develop GMT1 is approximately $900 million gross with peak production estimated at 30,000 bopd gross. First oil is planned for late 2018. In addition, permits have been filed for GMT2, located about 8 mi. (12.8 km) west of GMT1. GMT2 is estimated to cost more than $1 billion gross with peak production estimated at 25,000 to 30,000 bopd gross. A seismic survey over GMT2 and Willow is also planned in the first quarter of 2017. First oil for GMT2 is dependent upon the time to acquire federal permits, but is anticipated to be 2020 or 2021. The GMT Unit is operated by ConocoPhillips Alaska (78 percent interest). Anadarko Petroleum holds a 22 percent interest. (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s website at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

USDOT Highlights Backlog USDOT from page 1

He added that such investment pays off, since “improving our nation’s roads, bridges, and transit helps create jobs, connects communities and ensures that our nation is equipped for the future.” The report indicated that addressing the growing highway investment backlog while still meeting other needs as they arise over the next two decades will require $142.5 billion annually in combined transportation spending from state, federal and local governments. By comparison, in 2012 — the most recent year in which the report’s data were available, those federal, state and local governments spent a total of $105.2 billion on such infrastructure, the USDOT said, or “35.5 percent less than what is needed to improve highways and bridges.” “The case for more investment in our nation’s transportation system is clear,” said Federal Highway Administrator Gregory Nadeau. “A strong transportation system will make businesses more productive and freight shippers safer and more efficient

while improving America's quality of life.” The report also said $26.4 billion is needed per year to improve the condition of transit rail and bus systems, but said in 2012, total spending to preserve and expand transit systems was $17 billion. “If transit investment is sustained at those levels, overall transit system conditions are expected to decline over the next 20 years, and increasing the transit system preservation backlog from an estimated $89.8 billion to $122 billion,” the announcement said. “This report shows the impact of the lack of investment in infrastructure,” said Carolyn Flowers, acting federal transit administrator. “The results of that neglect can be seen throughout our country as both reliability and safety suffer. We must increase investment in public transportation nationwide, because we must take immediate action to bring our transit infrastructure into a state of good repair and provide the world-class service that Americans deserve.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s website at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

Volvo EC350E Helps Water Flow in Arid Great Plains Amarillo, Texas, sits in the crosshairs of America’s Routes 40 and 287, and is a waypoint between Albuquerque, N.M., and Oklahoma City, Okla. The area is rich in cowboy culture and mementos of its Route 66 heyday, best symbolized by the Cadillac Ranch, located just west of the city. But beyond the tourist attractions, the semi-desert region of high plains in which Amarillo is located is the sunbelt of the south. The average annual rainfall is less than 20 in. and the heat is often upwards of 110F (43C). With a number of droughts in recent years, water is in short supply. Lake Meredith, one of the city’s main water sources is dwindling, placing greater demands on the Ogallala aquifer, the vast underground reservoir that supplies Amarillo’s 190,000 residents. As a conservation effort, the city recycles effluent and sells back more than 4 billion gal. (18 billion L) each year to regional electric utilities as cooling water for generators. Recently, the Potter County Wellfield — the first major wellfield since 1956 — was drilled, bringing water to Amarillo to help sustain residential and commercial growth. Great Plans for Great Plains Working for the city is Amarillo Utility Contractors, a water and sewer construction company. Established in 1999 by Monte Taylor, the company has a reputation in the Lone Star state as a wet utilities specialist for many high-profile projects. Recently the company replaced 17,000 ft. (5,181 m) of 30 in. (76 cm) sewer main that was 36 ft. (11 m) deep to serve future expansion west of Amarillo. On average, Amarillo Utility Contractors places more than 2 million ft. (600,000 m) of water and sewer pipe each year. “When I started the company, our projects were relatively small and shallow,” Taylor recalled. “Over time, we’ve taken on more challenging projects.” With more than 1,000 mi. (1,600 km) of wastewater lines and 130 mi. (200 km) of storm water drainage snaking below the city, the company is hard at work to repair, replace and rehabilitate the water and sewer lines — most of which date back to the 1950s.

According to Volvo, the EC350E yields superior digging and breakout forces, making it the ideal moneymaking partner for Amarillo Utility Contractors.

To maintain high performance in the extreme environment, the Volvo EC350E features a hydraulically driven, electronically controlled cooling fan, designed to protect machine vitals.

With a max depth of 25 ft. (7.62 m) and a 303 hp (226 kW) Volvo D13 engine, the EC350E has the strength to get the job done quickly and efficiently, according to the company.

Cloud ‘Nein’ Construction This kind of work is not without its difficulties. Unearthing, removing and replacing the cracked clay mains means cutting into streets and navigating a maze of other pipes and underground infrastructure. To match the deep trenching and large pipe requirements of urban projects, Amarillo Utility Contractors decided that it needed to upgrade its fleet. After attending the 2015 Volvo Days customer event in Shippensburg, Pa., Taylor added three Volvo EC350E crawler excavators to his fleet of 13 machines. The excavators have been supplied by respected local Volvo dealership ASCO Equipment.

Digging Deeper The Volvo excavators are proving popular with Amarillo Utility Contractors. “The EC350E is the right size for 95 percent of all projects,” Taylor said. The crew modified the bucket’s attachment bracket link to allowing excavating at greater depths. “We can now go to depths of 24 ft. and dig within 15 ft. of the machine without compromising trench stability,” explained Mike Nail, company superintendent. As a result, “We’ve reduced excavation time significantly,” he added. “The ability to bolt together parts on the ground and lower them in one piece, versus

placing each individually speeds us up tremendously,” said Nail. Ensuring the machines are working at optimum levels is ASCO Equipment. “They have provided stellar support for the Volvo machines and existing equipment from other manufacturers,” said Taylor. “The daily maintenance is simpler and faster,” said Nail. “The single cabin air filter can be easily accessed and doesn’t require us to remove panels,” he added. In addition to simple servicing, it is important for the operators to enjoy using the using the Volvo machines. Operator Rusty Wilkinson speaks from experience. “I like the Volvo controls because they’re responsive. The cab is also comfortable to sit in for eight to 10 hours a day,” he said. According to the company, the Volvo additions are popular and productive. On average, the Volvo EC350E can trench, place and backfill 1,800 ft. (550 m) of pipe each day. And, since the punishing drought shows no signs of abating, the new infrastructure projects will serve to replenish the parched land and the city of Amarillo. Texas,c may have been built on oil, but water will certain carve its future. For more information, visit www.volvoce.com. Switching buckets has never been easier with the new John Deere hydraulic coupler (16GE23) for compact excavators. Operators are no longer required to exit the cab to switch buckets, so site clearing can continue with high productivity and minimal interruptions. The hydraulic coupler is designed for 35G, 50G and 60G excavators, and is compatible with the ever-expanding lineup of John Deere Worksite Pro attachments. The hydraulic coupler offers many key features that help drive additional productivity from an excavator. Most notable is the wedge bar locking system that compensates for wear and keeps the coupler joint tight. The wedge-style bucket pickup enables compact excavators to maintain breakout forces by keeping weight down, and operators can easily switch to other attachments, such as hydraulic hammers, with an adaptive bracket. The coupler is activated using a rocker switch. Once activated, curling the bucket unlocks the coupler. “The hydraulic coupler optimizes job site performance and productivity by simplifying the bucket-switching process, so projects are no longer interrupted by a complicated, manual attachment-changing procedure,” said Mark Wall, excavator product marketing manager, John Deere Construction & Forestry. “This coupler was designed with smart features to quickly change attachments and keep operations up and running without enduring a long-drawn-out process.” The hydraulic coupler works with a variety of Worksite Pro buckets and attachments, and is compatible with most competitive models. Vacuworx SS 2 Vacuum Offers Solution for Skid Steers The new Vacuworx SS 2 vacuum lifting system introduces yet another application for your skid steer — vacuum lifting. One of the most versatile construction tools available, skid steers are utilized by contractors of all sizes and across all trades. Now with the SS 2, your skid steer becomes part of a system that can lift steel plate, saw cut concrete, granite and marble slabs, landscape pavers and other materials faster, safer and smarter than ever before, according to the manufacturer. Ultimate Skid Steer Attachment Featuring all-aluminum construction, the SS 2 has a hydraulically driven vacuum pump and can be easily attached to any skid steer. Quick-connect hydraulic hoses and a universal mounting plate makes switching attachments fast and easy so you can maximize productivity. The SS 2 also can be used with a variety of mini-excavators or small cranes using the clevis hook connection.

manufacturer.

Featuring all-aluminum construction, the SS 2 design has a hydraulically driven vacuum pump and can be easily attached to any skid steer.

Productivity in a Small Package The compact design weighs just 98 lb. (44.4 kg), without mounting plate, but has a lifting capacity up to 2,716 lb. (1,232 kg). The SS 2 is

compatible with all skid steer brands and is perfect for floor, sidewalk, driveway, road and landscaping projects. Not only is vacuum lifting a safer alternative than hooks and chains, it also increases

your productivity and allows you to move on to the next job faster. In fact, with the help of the SS 2 you can cut concrete, remove the sections and pour new concrete all in the same day, according to the

How Vacuum Lifting Works The vacuum pump operates using the auxiliary hydraulics from the host machine (minimum 10 gpm [37.8 Lpm] required with maximum 3,000 psi). The vacuum pump maintains a constant vacuum in the pressure reservoir. When activated, the system pulls a vacuum between the integrated 24 by 24 in. (61 by 61 cm) vacuum pad and the object to be lifted, providing a powerful positive seal. Vacuworx Tough Seal pad seal is used on the vacuum pad to cover the material to be lifted and create the necessary suction. The vacuum seal holds until the operator activates the release (even in the event of a power failure). For more information, call 918/259-3050 or visit vacuworx.com.

LEED Facility...

Cashman Corporate HQ Receives SHARP Award From Nevada’s SCATS Cashman Equipment’s corporate headquarters in Henderson, Nev., has been officially recognized by the Safety Consultation and Training Section (SCATS) of the state of Nevada’s Division of Industrial Relations for its successful completion of the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP). Cashman Equipment’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold-certified facility joins the company’s Elko and Winnemucca locations in achieving this important safety designation. “Cashman has been on a safety journey to zero incidents, injuries, etc. for a number of years now,” said Mike Pack, Cashman Equipment president and COO, in the presentation during the company’s annual managers meeting, which focused on safety. “Our goal is to have all of our locations become SHARP certified. This makes number three, after Winnemucca and Elko in November, so we are just going to keep moving forward on this path towards getting all our locations designated as officially self-governing in regards to safety.” Currently, there are less than 50 SHARP-designated businesses in Nevada. Successful SHARP participants are exempt for two years from Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) general schedule inspections.

Also, the no-cost SHARP program helps reduce safety incidents on site and adhere to OSHA regulations through internal safety audits. “It's a very small, elite group of employees who can say they are SHARP certified. It takes upper management commitment and buy in,” said Todd Schultz, chief administrative officer for SCATS. “You also have to have employee buy in. You have to really see commitment from all levels in order for the SHARP program to work, so this is a very big deal, a great accomplishment for Cashman Equipment.” “Our employees’ safety, health, and well-being are of the utmost importance to us as a company and to me personally,” said MaryKaye Cashman, chairman and CEO of Cashman Equipment and a former registered nurse. “As we have said before, there is absolutely nothing more valuable than sending our people home safely, every day. We are very pleased to receive this SHARP award recognizing everyone’s dedication to safety.” Cashman Equipment is also in the process of applying for its SHARP certification for its Reno location. NDOT Project Extends USA Parkway

Montana...

Democrats Push Infrastructure as State Priority By Matt Volz ASSOCIATED PRESS

Last fall, crews reached approximately 50 percent completion of the major earthwork for the project, with more than 1.3 million cu. yds. (993,921 cu m) of earth already moved to make way for the future freeway. NDOT from page 1

alignments, ultimately selecting one alignment to most comprehensively minimize cultural, community, natural resource, construction and other impacts. The selected roadway alignment was chosen to avoid/minimize impacts to two significant historic resources. The 19th century Overland Trail stagecoach and wagon route, as well as the early-1900s Ramsey town and mine site, were both avoided. “There also is a significant estray/wild horse population in the project area,” noted Meg Ragonese, NDOT public information officer. “Wildlife fencing and two under-crossings will be installed on the new segment of roadway to enhance safety by helping prevent wildlife-vehicle collisions. The under-crossings also will help continue access to roaming lands for wild animals and other native animals.” Ames Construction of Carlin, Nev., was awarded the design/build contract for $75.9 million in 2016. Ames is heading up the earthwork, structural concrete, storm drains and wet utilities. Subcontractors include Granite Construction of Sparks, Nev., for paving; Nevada Barricade & Sign Company, also of Sparks for Traffic control, guardrail and striping; and Par Electrical Contractors of Reno, Nev., for ITS and lighting. Major earthwork is approximately

50 percent complete, with nearly 1.3 million cu. yds. (993,921 cu m) of earth already moved to make way for the future freeway. This fall, crews have been busy paving the first segment of future roadway from the end of the existing, paved USA Parkway to the Lyon County line. Construction will continue through late 2017 with: • Continuing earthwork and excavation to create the new roadway alignment, totaling 2.4 million cu. yds. (1.8 million cu m) of earth and 350,000 cu. yds. (267,594 cu m) of rock excavation • Installation of two wildlife undercrossings and roadside animal fencing • Construction of a roundabout at the future USA Parkway/U.S. 50 intersection in Silver Springs • 245,000 tons (222,260 t) of asphalt paving, striping, drainage, signage and guardrail Aesthetic treatments will be added to enhance the project, including decorative rock depicting scenes of emigrants moving west, fur trappers and early

explorers. Artist Kate Raudenbush has been commissioned to create a sculpture for the entry to the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center (TRIC). The future USA Parkway will greatly increase mobility between the I-80 Reno-Sparks corridor and the Silver Springs/Dayton communities located on U.S. 50. In fact, the project is projected to reduce travel times by as much as 38 percent for those traveling between U.S. 50 and I-80. Because most of the project is taking place in an unpopulated area, construction work has minimal impact on mobility: currently, there are minor lane closures on the existing section of USA Parkway. Later this year, minor traffic control will take place on U.S. 50 in Silver Springs as a traffic roundabout is installed connecting the new roadway to U.S. 50. HELENA, Mont. (AP) Montana Democrats said their top priority for the legislative session will be pushing Gov. Steve Bullock’s $293 million infrastructure package after a similar proposal was rejected by Republican-led lawmakers two years ago. This time, the Democrats are framing the package as a jobs bill that would put construction workers and engineers to work. The Democrats are the minority party in both the House and Senate, so their ability to pass legislation is limited. Senate Minority Leader Jon Sesso and House Minority Leader Jenny Eck held a news conference flanked by members of their caucus in an effort to gain public support for the plan involving roads, water systems and buildings. “We intend to be part of the majority working on the best ideas to move Montana forward,” Sesso said. “And the best idea we have right now is to get this infrastructure bill done and get it done right.” Infrastructure funding is particularly important to eastern Montana, which is straining under the population growth brought on by the Bakken oil boom in North Dakota. But funding efforts have failed over the past two legislative sessions: In 2015, the package did not get enough votes to approve state bonds required to pay for many of the projects. Bullock vetoed a bill in 2013. Republicans also have identified infrastructure as a high priority in the session. GOP leaders have said they are working on their own package that focuses on water, sewer and critical transportation projects. Notably missing are building projects that Republican leaders objected to last time, such as renovating Montana State University’s Romney Hall and a new Montana Historical Society building in Helena. Republican spokeswoman Lindsey Singer said there is no immediate timeline for the GOP package to be introduced, and that the budget must be scrutinized first before lawmakers know how much can be spent on infrastructure projects. Rep. Jim Keane, D-Butte, will sponsor the two bills that contain the governor’s infrastructure package, which would be paid for with a mix of cash and bonds. Keane acknowledged that the governor’s package is unlikely to get through the legislative process unchanged. “We have to make compromises, but we’re going to get a good bill out that’s our bill and then turn that back to the governor,” Keane said. Stadium Authority Passes Resolution Demolition Begins to Construct New Aloha Stadium on Shuttered North Pole Refinery The Stadium Authority has approved a resolution supporting the construction of a new Aloha Stadium.

The Stadium Authority has approved a resolution supporting the construction of a new Aloha Stadium. The decision comes after a number of studies showed exponential cost increases for deferred maintenance toward health and safety repairs in order to extend the stadium's current operation. The Authority states that the new facility could be constructed for a comparable price, as well as provide more opportunities. It’s expected to seat between 30,000 to 40,000. The Stadium Authority is hoping that a new stadium,

along with the proposed rail and transit oriented development, will create opportunities for new types of events. “We are excited for the future but recognize this is just one step in a very long process,” said Scott Chan, stadium manager. “The current stadium is safe to operate and we will continue to host events and welcome guests knowing that it may take a number of years until a new facility is constructed.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s website at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) The company that owns the shuttered North Pole Refinery has begun its demolition. The decision by Flint Hills Resources to tear down refining facilities ends modest hope that a buyer could resume operations, the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reported. Flint Hills spokesman, Jeff Cook, in a prepared statement said no buyer was found. “With no parties interested in purchasing and operating the refinery, the prudent step is to demolish the refinery to best protect the site and repurpose the site for productive future use,” he said. The refinery opened in 1977. Flint Hills in 2014 ended refining operations but continued using the property as a storage facility. Flint Hills cited an increasingly difficult market and environmental cleanup costs from a chemical spill under a previous owner for shuttering the plant. The refinery was mothballed so a prospective buyer could resume production.

“It’s unfortunate. It’s a loss to Alaska and a loss to Fairbanks.” Jim Dodson Fairbanks Economic Development Corp.

The demolition is sad but “kind of inevitable,” said North Pole Mayor Bryce Ward. The reduced property value of the plant will have revenue consequences for the city, Ward said. The tax value already had been reduced more than half after refining ended. Until 2014, the plant was producing jet fuel, diesel, gasoline, asphalt and specialty fuels from North Slope oil transported through the trans-Alaska oil pipeline. More than 100 people worked at the refinery. Storage operations will continue, Cook said. Dismantling the site is an unhappy development, said Jim Dodson, executive director of the Fairbanks Economic Development Corp., even though the refinery already was dormant. “It’s unfortunate. It’s a loss to Alaska and a loss to Fairbanks,” Dodson said. “We try to assure that value is added to a raw material before it leaves Alaska, which would create jobs here.” North Pole City Councilman Doug Isaacson, a former mayor and a state legislator, remained hopeful. “It still is zoned for refining,” Isaacson said. “Just because they are taking out old equipment doesn’t mean that someone couldn’t put in new equipment somewhere down the road if the economy called for it.” For more information, visit newsminer.com. Mack mDRIVE Transmissions Gain Performance, Safety Mack Trucks introduced Mack mDRIVE rolling start and auto neutral, two new features designed to improve the jobsite performance and safety of trucks equipped with Mack’s mDRIVE and mDRIVE HD automated manual transmissions. Both features are standard on all Mack mDRIVE and mDRIVE HD transmissions. “Mack’s mDRIVE transmissions serve a wide range of customers, including those with demanding paving and concrete applications,” said Tim Wrinkle, Mack construction product manager. “Now updated with rolling start and auto neutral, mDRIVE transmissions are even better suited to those tasks.” Mack mDRIVE rolling start allows drivers to shift the transmission into drive without pressing the truck’s service brakes. This eliminates the possibility of creating a bump in the paving surface, which is a critical benefit for paving applications. Several construction applications, including concrete mixers, rely on remote throttle controls. By automatically shifting the mDRIVE into neutral when the parking brake is set, Mack mDRIVE auto neutral helps improve jobsite safety by reducing the possibility of the truck moving due to throttle application. ROAD MACHINERY Equify had hopes of raising money, but managed to surpass all expectations, ultimately raising more than $18,000 through the generous support and donations of its auction customers.

It’s likely you, or someone close to you, has a direct connection with someone in the armed forces. What you may never know is their whole story. Equify, a Fort Worth, Texas, based equipment finance company, has several ties with the armed forces. As a company, it continuously dedicates time and effort to supporting the military. However, 2016 showed the heart of the company and its customers in a profound way. Throughout the year, Equify received several items donated by The Boot Campaign to run through its auction events. Items such as combat boots signed by retired Navy Seal and Lone Survivor author, Marcus Luttrell and combat boots signed by Dallas

Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo. Equify had hopes of raising money, but managed to surpass all expectations, ultimately raising more than $18,000 through the generous support and donations of its auction customers. A Kimber Custom II .45 acp Boot Campaign Edition custom gun was repeatedly bid on, won and re-donated in order to raise more money. This item alone raised nearly all of the final donated amount. The Boot Campaign has assembled a dedicated team of experts, focused on the science of the brain of veterans. The difference with this approach is, they want to get to the root cause of what these veterans are experiencing in order to treat them, not just cover them up.

The ability to treat each veteran as an individual gives them a better chance at surviving. Through the combined efforts of The Boot Campaign, Equify and its customer base, a veteran has now been sponsored and will soon receive diagnostics and brain treatment to combat TBI, PTSD, insomnia, pain and addiction. No story of a veteran is the same, therefore no treatment plan is the same. Equify continues to raise money and awareness through involvement in programs like ReBoot and the Boot Campaign. The goal for 2017 is to sponsor a second veteran. If you have items you wish to donate to have them auctioned off through Equify, contact katydabbert@equifyllc.com. Bunyon Adds ‘The Beast’ to Fleet of Bandit Machines “If you order it like this you save $9,” said Ron Rinell as he maneuvered his breakfast of eggs, ham and a side of hollandaise sauce into position to create a delectable dish of eggs benedict. He was very happy with the meal, especially since his daughter was home from college to share the breakfast with him. But he’s also very keen about getting his money’s worth, and while the eggs benedict breakfast at the worldfamous Madonna Inn is delicious,

something of a reputation for being the happiest town in America. Back in 1990 this was the first city in the world to ban smoking in public buildings. The downtown area is structured to promote pedestrian and bicycle traffic; a nod to the numerous biking and hiking trails in the area. All drivethru restaurants are banned in the city, and in 2010 the smoking ban was extended to all public outdoor areas as well. Outside the city limits, there’s the Pacific Ocean to the

having that extra $9 in your pocket makes the “self-assembled” version taste even better. Ron could certainly afford the eggs benedict if he wanted it. He’s the owner of Bunyon Bros. Tree Service, headquartered in San Luis Obispo and serving the entire San Luis Obispo County. Tucked neatly between Los Angeles and San Francisco on California’s picturesque Central Coast, San Luis Obispo (or SLO to the locals) has

west, mountains to the east, and vineyards all around. The local population of 44,000 love it, and the floods of tourists who visit each year seem to love it as well. Watching Ron enjoy his breakfast while sharing stories of surfing and travel, it’s pretty easy to see he loves SLO as much as anyone. It’s certainly a great place to build an all-encompassing tree care business — Ron and his 30 employees handle everything from

wide company specializing in playground material. Starting with whole trees, he makes the precise product his client needs in a single pass. And when other clients come calling for mulch, swapping the knives for cutting or grinding teeth is barely a 15-minute operation on the 30-tooth cuttermill. “They want us to make chips for them, for playground use,” explained Rinell. “We are their source to make chips with The Beast to distribute throughout California. They want to purchase 20,000 to 30,000 yards right now, and it’s a really good, specific chip they need. This project alone was good justification to get The Beast because it would finance the machine, never mind all the clearing projects I had to turn away. We have new screens and baffles going into The Beast to make the certified chip they need, and Bandit has really helped us with the configuration to make just the right product.” And that’s the “new” big project Bunyon Bros. is taking on. The company recently picked up a job for a local military base, clearing see BANDIT page 38

Atlas Copco’s Bucket Crusher Offers Greater Versatility

(L-R) are Dave Turin and Darlene and Stu Gamble.

Maximus ‘Strikes Gold’ With Crushing, Screening Line Maximus North America is setting the gold standard for the Mobile Crushing & Screening industry by introducing the Irish based Maximus Crushing and Screening product line into North America in 2015. This statement proved to be true and ironic when one of the stars of the Discovery Channel’s hit TV show “Gold Rush” noticed the bright red Maximus MXJ-1000 Jaw Crusher at an industry trade show in 2016. Dave Turin, who oversees mining and production for 316 Mining LLC, otherwise known as The Hoffman Team, stopped by the Maximus North America stand as he was leaving the trade show because the quality, fit and finish of the machine caught his attention and he was interested to see whether there might be any synergies between the 316 Mining Team and the Maximus brand. Stu Gamble, president of Maximus North America, and a few of the MNA dealers struck up a conversation with Turin about the product line and it was discovered that Maximus did indeed have a machine in its product line that could fit in the gold mining operation. The 316 Mining Team’s set up at the time included a trommel screen that could separate material but did not have a hopper which would allow material to be fed into it. Maximus builds a TFC-80 360 degree swivel feed hopper stacker that would have the capability of remotely operating on a 90 degree angle. This technology would allow

The Hoffman Team to feed pay dirt directly into the hopper on any terrain angle, which then would feed directly into the trommel that the team was using to separate the rocks from the fines of the pay dirt. The Maximus TFC-80 not only increased the team’s production ability but also was used to return the dredged land back to its original condition after the gold was mined, which is something that the mining team holds as a top priority. In the world of gold-mining, there are very few things that are predictable. Adverse weather conditions, rough terrain, the threat of wild animals always very real and present, and the hurdle of mounting expenses with no guarantee of a pay out, all could very well turn away the average miner to give up their dream of finding real gold. The 316 Mining Team’s tenacity and determination, coupled with the dependability of the high-performance, high-quality Maximus machine turned out to be a winning gold standard combination. Maximus North America welcomes the 316 Mining Team to its booth at ConExpo 2017 in Las Vegas and would like to invite everyone to stop by for autographs and conversation with Turin to speak with him about his experiences with the Maximus product line. The TFC-80 Stacker will be displayed on Silver Lot 1 #S-5007. For more information, call 941/735-8585.

Atlas Copco’s new bucket crushers process as much as 110 tons (100 t) per hour and fit 49,000- to 85,200-lb. (22,226 to 38,646 kg) carriers.

Atlas Copco Construction Equipment’s new generation of bucket crusher attachments offer higher output and greater reliability than previous models. The new bucket crushers — the BC 2500 and BC 3700 — process about 80 percent more material due to their hydraulic drive system. The BC 2500 fits 24- to 33-ton (21.7 to 30 t) carrier weight classes, and the BC 3700 fits 30- to 42-ton (27 to 38 t) carrier weight classes. “The new bucket crushers allow contractors to increase the versatility of carriers, especially on demolition, recycling and road construction applications,” said Rich Elliott, Atlas Copco product manager, hydraulic attachments. “The powerful drive systems and high reliability make them an ideal alternative to mobile jaw crushers for cramped worksites. Plus, they can process a wide range of materials, including aggregate, asphalt and concrete.” The attachments feature powerful components that allow carrier operators to crush as much as 110 tons of material per hour. The drive system — two hydraulic motors and a timing belt — generates the high torque needed for powering the crushing jaw. The attachments also feature a reverse

function to easily remove any blockage by pushing material back through the inlet. Crushing material on site allows contractors to save on transportation costs to a landfill or processing center since they can fit more material in each truck load. They also can reuse the crushed material on site as backfill, which reduces the costs associated with hauling in material. Atlas Copco designed the attachments for high reliability and maximum uptime in challenging worksite conditions. For example, Atlas Copco’s internally mounted drive system eliminates protruding components to minimize the risk of dust entering the hydraulic system and to protect key components from flying debris. Additionally, operators can control the diameter of the crushed materials by easily adjusting the jaw outlet without any special tools. This keeps set-up times to a minimum and allows operators to create varying material sizes. For more information, call 800/732-6762 or visit www.atlascopco.us. Bunyon Bros. Tree Service Relies on Bandit for Its Business BANDIT from page 35

1000 trees in two weeks that he’ll also be tackling with The Beast. That’s in addition to daily removals and trimming projects, not to mention their work for both the city and the county — everything from parks to roadways. They are also contracted to the city which puts them on-call 24 hours a day in case of emergencies. As a result, Bunyon Bros. is the largest tree service operation in the area. And they’re always busy. “The drought is what’s driving the business right now,” said Rinell. “It’s killing trees all over the place. We didn’t get five inches of rain all last year, and now with El Nino, people are thinking they should get the big trees over their homes taken down before the storms do, but they want it done right now. We’re backed up a month; they’re almost angry because they have to wait. But the El Nino, it seems to be hitting up north and down to the south, but it’s missing us.”

The drought is certainly bad, but business is good for Ron and his company. He’s continually added employees over the last few years, growing Bunyon Bros. into a multi-million-dollar company. Part of that success is certainly due to his eye for efficiency and getting the most from his investments. He only employs the best of the best, and his philosophy for purchases is that he should be making ten times the investment of the machine. That alone says something about The Beast’s earning potential for companies like Bunyon Bros Tree Service. But the real key to Ron’s success is the same kind of determination that separates those who work to get by, versus those who work to get ahead. That’s easy to understand once you hear the two-part origin story of Bunyon Bros., because it’s really something. I really like the support team from Bandit; the customer service is great — the designs are great too.

“I had a friend who had 7000 acres, and his father wanted us to clear it so we started cutting trees,” said Rinell. “He was a professional bull rider and his friend was also a bull rider, and I was a jock and I had a friend who basically drank beer and cut trees. We were all sitting around the barbeque one evening just bragging it up, comparing ourselves to ‘our brother’ Paul Bunyan and arguing about where he was originally from. We’d had a few drinks and were really getting steamed with each other when one of the guys said ‘you each say you’re Paul Bunyan’s brother? I guess that makes you the Bunyan brothers.’ And that’s when Bunyon [with an O] Brothers Tree Service was born.” As neat as that story is, the Bunyon Bros. of today stems from a very different set of circumstances. “I was young and dumb; the guys and I dissipated for a while and I got in some trouble,” said

Rinell of his early days. “I turned it around, went to school, got a degree in international business, but when companies found out about my past, I couldn’t get a job. I’d sold all the tree equipment I’d had and I swore I wasn’t going back, but I bought the equipment back and opened my own business. I got a contractor license and went legit with the company in 2000. At that point I was basically homeless, but I had nothing else.” Working as the sole person behind the company, Ron gradually built Bunyon Bros. to the company it is today. For the longest time, he ran chippers from a different manufacturer until one of his climbers talked up the benefits of Bandit. Ron bought his first Bandit chipper four years ago, and he’s bought one every year since. “I really like the support team from Bandit; the customer service is great,” he said. “The designs are great too. We had problems on the other chippers with the throat being too large; there was too

much space between the feed wheels and the drum and the brush wouldn’t feed right. I also like the four knives on the model 1590 as opposed to the two-knife setup on others. And I love my Model 1890 — it grabs material right away, and it has 225 hp on a single axle with dual wheels. For transporting around these parts, double-axle machines are just too long. That makes a big difference in towing.” With his breakfast cravings satisfied and a few phone calls answered, Ron headed off to work at a company he didn’t expect to build, in a field he didn’t want to be a part of. But in his words, it all turned out to be a blessing in disguise. “Here I am 15 years later, living in the happiest place in the nation with a wonder multi-million dollar business and an awesome daughter. Life is good!” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s website at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

With the ISO 9001:2008 certification, MB’s products are shown to have the highest quality system management in producing its machines for its customers. The company’s production method is so advanced that the company can warrant the highest quality of its products. The certification reassures customers are receiving the best quality products. “We are very excited to receive a 5 out of 5 score on the ISO 9001:2008 recertification,” said Miriano “Max” Ravazzolo, CEO of MB Crusher America. “We have men-

tioned before that our products are produced at the highest quality. Now after this audit, there is no doubt about it. Customers can be certain they have the best machines.” MB offers crushing and screening attachments, 360-degree rotation grapples and dual head rotary drum cutters for a wide scope of work, which includes demolition and excavation, road work, quarries, mining, pipeline work and environmental reclamation projects. MB’s attachments use the hydraulic system on excavators, skid loaders and backhoes, and allow contractors the flexibility to work in tight areas, difficult access locations, steep slopes and urban areas. Contractors will be able to reuse materials immediately at the job site and provide a greener option in recycling waste materials. By reusing the materials, contractors and businesses can begin saving time and money in reducing waste and trucking costs. For more information, call 855/622-7874 or visit www.mbamerica.com.
