A $400 million public-private partnership initiated by the George Kaiser Family Foundation (GKFF) and an ongoing multi-million donation is transforming more than 100 acres of central Tulsa, Okla., into a major park — A Gathering Place for Tulsa. The project began in Sept. 2014 and Phase 1, covering 66.5 acres, is due to complete in late 2017. When completed, the park is expected to attract more than one million visitors annually. “We have seen tremendous progress over the past year and everything is on track,” said Jeff Stava, executive director and trustee of Tulsa’s Gathering Place LLC. “With such a large project we have built in weather contingencies and known we would have to make adjustments as the work progresses. We have been lucky and Mother Nature has cooperated for the most part. We have had minor delays here and there, but been able to catch up in following weeks by working some extra shifts. Overall, the full team is very encouraged by the progress and current schedule.” GKFF’s $150 million donation, including $50 million worth of

land, is being bolstered by another $200 million in private donations that are being received on a regular basis. “It surpasses a $100 million gift to the Central Park Conservancy in New York,” said Stava. TGP was designed by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates of Brooklyn, N.Y., with Valkenburgh personally leading the design team. Phase I is being constructed from 24th to 31st streets on the east and west sides of Riverside Drive and from 24th Street to 34th Street see TULSA page 26

The paver works in tandem with a Roadtec SB-2500e Shuttle Buggy material transfer vehicle (MTV), which provides a steady flow of HMA to the paver.

Oklahoma Paving Project Updates Portion of U.S. 62 By Jeff Winke SPECIAL TO CEG
U.S. 62 runs 2,248 mi. (3,618 km) from the Mexico-U.S. border at El Paso, Texas, to Niagara Falls, N.Y., at the Canada–U.S. border. It is the only east-west United Statesnumbered highway that connects the two countries. A 7.5-mi. (12 km) section of U.S. 62 in Oklahoma recently received a rehab. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) project started in Blanchard, Okla., and headed west. Blanchard is part of a rapidly growing area of northern McClain and Grady counties known as the “Tri-City Area” with Newcastle and Tuttle. The project section of U.S. 62 is special because the road was built in 2000 when ODOT was switching from conventional HMA to Superpave. The contractor back then was getting used to Superpave and the mix used was too low on oil. Superpave was originated from a Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP), an initiative whose mandate was to improve materials, selection and mixture design by developing what became known as the Superior Performing Asphalt Pavement System or Superpave. Unfortunately, the road did not last as well as anticipated — it showed premature wear and deterioration, which necessitated its replacement. In addition, the area
where this section of U.S. 62 is located has experienced population growth so the road is receiving a greater traffic load. Markwell Paving Co., Oklahoma City, Okla., was selected as the contractor for the U.S. Highway 62 rehab project. Established in 1962, Markwell is a third generation, family-owned paving company serving the central Oklahoma market. The company has 80 employees and offers excavation, soil stabilization, milling, asphalt and concrete paving, sealcoating and striping. “A good 97 percent of our work is roadwork,” stated Mike Boatman, general superintendent with Markwell Paving. “The U.S.
62 project is exactly the kind of work we do best.” Markwell used its Roadtec RX700e heavy-duty milling machine, equipped with a 10 ft. 6 in. (3.2 m) width cutter drum. The half-lane cold planer features a four-track suspension, dual water spray bars, and 120-degree conveyor swing, which allows feeding a truck in an adjacent lane or around a tight bend. “The ride quality road of the road had deteriorated and required a two-inch milling depth to establish a base,” Boatman said. “We used a five-worker milling crew to complete the road milling portion of the project. “The milling was a bit of a chal-
lenge,” said Boatman. “I was glad we were running a good cold planer — Roadtec makes the best milling machines I’ve found on the market.” On its paving team, Markwell Paving had a crew of eight. They placed a 2-in. (5 cm) lift of a locally-sourced RIL (Ridge Intermediate Layer) course directly on top of the uniformly level milled surface. This 14,000 tons (12,700 t) of base course contains more oils and additives to bind the milled surface with the top two layers of HMA. “The RIL mix is very finicky to work with as far as ambient temperature,” said Boatman. “Weather delays we experienced on this proj-

ect were pretty much during the RIL paving due to temperatures falling outside the material’s application comfort zone.” The company used its gravityfed Roadtec SP-100e Stealth paver on the U.S. 62 highway rehab project. The machine manufacturer describes the paver as: “…machine gravity feeds material directly to the auger from the mass flow hopper, replacing the need for slat conveyors, hopper wings, push rollers and tandem front boggies, thereby significantly reducing maintenance costs and initial purchase price over any conventional 10-foot paver.” The paver works in tandem with a Roadtec SB-2500e Shuttle Buggy material transfer vehicle (MTV), which provides a steady flow of HMA to the paver. The new port facilities will be larger and more efficient while also addressing flooding issues through site improvements to control storm water flow. The current facility was built in 1989 and was designed to accommodate visitors and a few commercial vehicles entering the United States. Since that time, the port has gained sig-
nificance in agricultural trade and the number of daily crossings has increased substantially. Construction is expected to begin in January 2017, and be completed in February 2019. (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s website at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)
FERC Issues License for $1B Montana Ritchie Bros. 400-Megawatt Power Storage Project Announces Terry Dolan’s Departure
By Matthew Brown ASSOCIATED PRESS
BILLINGS, MONT. (AP) A Montana company has been granted a license to build a $1 billion, 400-megawatt power storage project in the central part of the state that would supplement electricity from wind turbines and other sources, according to documents released by federal regulators. The 50-year license from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission allows Absaroka Energy, of Bozeman, Mont., to construct and operate the project on a 177-acre site near the tiny town of Martinsdale, home to fewer than 100 people. The facility called the Gordon Butte Pumped Storage Project would use excess power produced by wind farms or other sources to pump water uphill to a 3,000-ft. (914 m) long reservoir, according to the license. During times of peak consumer electricity demand or when the wind is not blowing, the water would be released to turn hydropower turbines and keep electricity flowing. Federal energy officials have said Montana has enormous potential for wind power development, with more than 665 megawatts of capacity already installed, according to the American Wind Energy Association. Projects such as Gordon Butte would help ensure a steady flow of power needed to make the grid run smoothly.
Water for the electricity-generating project would be drawn from Cottonwood Creek, a tributary of the Musselshell River, via an existing irrigation system for a nearby ranch. The project is located near a pair of large transmission lines that originate in Colstrip, Mont., about a four-hour drive from Martinsdale. The Colstrip lines connect with the Bonneville Power Administration transmission system, which provides power across the Pacific Northwest. Carl Borgquist, Absaroka Energy president, said his company’s efforts will now turn to engineering work to solidify a construction schedule and costs estimated last year at $986 million. The company is seeking financing, with construction expected to begin no earlier than 2018, he said. Gov. Steve Bullock and U.S. Sens. Steve Daines and Jon Tester issued statements supporting the project. They said it would boost the reliability of Montana’s electric grid, create jobs and promote renewable energy. The project would cost $173 million annually to operate and produce power valued at $220 million a year, according to the license. Regulators concluded in September that the project would not have a significant environmental impact. Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers Incorporated announced that Terry Dolan, president, U.S. and Latin America, is leaving the company effective Dec. 31, 2016. “I would like to thank Terry for his contributions to the company and wish him much success in his future endeavors,” said Ravi Saligram, chief executive officer. Saligram will serve as interim president for the United States and Latin America until further notice. The company intends to review its senior executive leadership structure in connection with its recently announced acquisition of IronPlanet, which, as previously communicated, is expected to close by the end of the second quarter of 2017. The company also announced the appointment of Rob Whitsit, a former senior vice president of Ritchie Bros., as a senior advisor to Saligram during the interim period. Whitsit brings a wealth of experience in the business and will provide additional support to the U.S. sales team as the new executive structure is finalized. Caterpillar Announces Appointments Following the previous announcement of changes and appointments in Caterpillar’s executive office, and due to the retirement of two long-serving vice presidents, Caterpillar Inc. announced its board of directors has appointed three new vice presidents. Kent Adams to Retire After more than 38 years with Caterpillar, Kent Adams, president and CEO of Caterpillar financial services corporation and Caterpillar vice president of the financial products division, has elected to retire. “Under Kent’s guidance since 2005, Cat Financial has been a stable source of earnings through challenging business cycles, including the global financial crisis,” said Jim Umpleby, Caterpillar CEO-elect. “Kent leaves a lasting legacy for Caterpillar through his relentless focus on improving the customer experience as well as developing and nurturing a people-focused culture for employees working for Cat Financial.” Adams joined Caterpillar in 1979 and performed various finance functions in positions of increasing leadership at Caterpillar Americas Co., the North American commercial division, Caterpillar Asia Pte. Ltd. and Caterpillar Brasil Ltda. before joining Cat Financial in Nashville, Tenn., in 1998 as vice president responsible for European operations and marine vessel finance. He was a member of the Equipment Leasing and Finance Association board of directors, the Financial Services Roundtable, the Nashville branch of the Federal Reserve Board of Atlanta, the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce and the board of the United Way of Metropolitan Nashville. Mike DeWalt to Retire After more than 35 years with the company, Mike DeWalt, vice president of the finance services division, has elected to retire. “For more than 10 years, Mike has been the trusted face and voice of Caterpillar for the investment community, leading our investor relations group with a steady hand and a deep knowledge of every part of the company’s global operations and the markets we serve,” Umpleby said. “Mike has provided effective leadership for a number of financial activities, including corporate treasury, economics, business risk management, competitive analysis, strategic planning and strategic investments.” DeWalt joined Caterpillar in 1981 as an accountant and progressed to a
series of positions in the accounting and finance areas. From 1996 to 2001, DeWalt was the senior finance leader of F.G. Wilson in Northern Ireland and Perkins Engine Company in Peterborough, U.K. — both wholly owned subsidiaries of Caterpillar. Following those assignments, he was named director of strategic investments, leading Caterpillar’s corporate mergers and acquisitions group, and was the director of Investor Relations from 2005 to 2012. In 2012, DeWalt became the corporate controller, and in 2013, he was appointed vice president of the strategic services division. Joe Creed Named V.P. of Finance Services Division The company’s board of directors has appointed Joe Creed to replace DeWalt as vice president of the finance services division. Creed is currently chief financial officer of Energy & Transportation, effective Jan. 1, 2017. “Joe brings deep expertise in the areas of financial reporting and accounting to this role,” Umpleby said. “Over the course of his nearly 20 years with Caterpillar, Joe has held leadership positions in accounting and finance with increasing levels of responsibility at the corporate level, as well as with business units in both our engine and machine businesses,” Umpleby added. Zack Kauk Named V.P. of Excavation Division Caterpillar’s board of directors has appointed Zack Kauk, vice president of the excavation division, effective Jan. 1, 2017. Kauk is a 27-year veteran of Caterpillar, and during his career has held multiple leadership positions in engineering and product management roles in Europe, Asia and the United States. He brings an extensive global product management and engineering background to his new role as the leader of the excavation division,” Umpleby said. Dave Walton Named V.P. of Financial Products Division The company’s board of directors has appointed Dave Walton as president and CEO of Caterpillar Financial Services Corporation and Caterpillar vice president of the financial products division.
Walton is a 28-year Cat Financial veteran and is currently vice president of Cat Financial Services Corporation with administrative responsibility for North America Sales, Cat Mining Finance and Cat Financial Commercial Accounts. “During his career, Dave has held leadership positions with Cat Financial serving customers across Europe, Asia and the Americas, giving him the broad global perspective required to lead the financial products division. Dave has become known for his dedication to helping our customers succeed,” Umpleby said. Walton has served on the Asia Pacific board of directors for Junior Achievement International. He will assume his new duties April 1, 2017, and will relocate to the financial products division headquarters in Nashville, Tenn.

Combi Cutters John Deere Offers Severe-Duty Buckets Offer Versatility Atlas Copco’s CC Combi Cutter hydraulic attachments maximize carrier versatility and operator productivity for demolition and recycling applications due to their powerful jaws and excellent handling. To maximize operator productivity, the attachments get their crushing forces from two powerful hydraulic cylinders, which deliver constant closing forces to the material and short open-close cycle times — as little as 1.6 seconds, according to the manufacturer. Atlas Copco designed the Combi Cutters for easy handling in addition to powerful closing forces. Every Combi Cutter rotates 360-degrees for changing demolition requirements, such as switching from floors to walls or columns. Operators can tailor the attachment to fit the job requirements. For instance, they can switch out the universal jaws, which are used for general steel cutting and concrete crushing, and replace them with a set of steel-cutting jaws for demolishing steel. The Combi Cutter product line fits a wide range of carrier weight classes, from 2.5 to 94 tons (2.2 to 85 t). For more information, call 800/732-6762 or visit www.atlascopco.us. Designed to take advantage of the improved performance and boom design of the large-frame 332G skid steer and 333G compact track loader (CTL), John Deere now offers 90-in. (228.6 cm) severe-duty construction buckets. Available with a serrated edge or as a tooth bucket, these new additions to the John Deere lineup of Worksite Pro attachments are redefining expectations of what compact equipment can accomplish. “Customers love our large-frame machines because they are powerful and highly productive, yet compact and easy to transport or trailer,” said Gregg Zupancic, product marketing manager, John Deere Construction & Forestry. “When equipped with a severe-duty bucket, productivity is magnified, making these machines capable of doing almost the same amount of work as a larger piece of construction equipment.” The 90-in. buckets come standard with a serrated edge that’s reversible to a smooth side. The serrated side is efficient for cutting a graded surface, loosening hard-to-penetrate materials, such as packed gravel, or breaking up frozen
ground. The smooth side cutting edge is more efficient for fine, finish-grade work and back-dragging materials. Bucket teeth also are available as an option. The welded-on teeth drastically increase digging ability and help cut into rocky soil, scoop loose dirt or dig out roots. With the universal, self-cleaning Quik-Tatch easy attachment system found on all John Deere skid steers, CTLs and compact excavators, the machine can easily add and remove the Severe-Duty bucket in no time. The new attachment series also is backed by John Deere parts, service and warranty coverage. For more information, visit www.johndeere.com. Eric Ransome, owner of Atlantic Excavator Attachments, has taken to the road to demonstrate how his Black Splitter log splitter attachments can optimize firewood processing, wood chipping and mulch processing operations. He has been traversing the Mid-Atlantic region conducting free onsite demonstrations to accomplish the mission. Ransome embarked on this campaign after recognizing that previous onsite demonstrations successfully conveyed the transformative power of this log splitter attachment. His goal is to showcase the Black Splitter’s ability to handle and split large timber with a single operator while reducing the manpower and costs associated with traditional operations. While most of Atlantic’s customers mount the cone splitter on various sized excavators, Ransome acquired the Vermeer S725TX mini-skid steer for its cost-efficiency, transportability, and diverse functionality. He purchased the

Demand for Non-Tier IV⁄
IEDA Forecasts Impact of EPA’s Tier IV Mandates on Used Equipment Market According to a recent survey of Independent Equipment Dealers Association (IEDA) members, the EPA’s Tier IV mandates are driving up the demand of non-Tier IV, used construction equipment and predicts this trend will continue for the next several years. For many equipment categories, used equipment availability is outpacing demand, but for other categories, including excavators, backhoe loaders, wheel loaders, dump trucks dozers and compact equipment, IEDA members are seeing resale pricing increase by as much as 20 percent. Also, more than 50 percent of survey respondents noted that quality used equipment is getting harder to find. The IEDA membership base is comprised of equipment dealers from around the world specializing in used construction and mining equipment sales. Since the EPA implemented new
standards more than two decades ago, the IEDA’s staff and members have kept a close eye to how used equipment availability and pricing would be affected by each new standard. “Our members buy and sell used equipment globally, which makes them well aware of market trends,” said Drew Van Brunt, IEDA president and owner of Global Tractor Company in Colleyville, Texas. “As a group, we make it a point to share trends we see in the market with each other, as well as with used equipment buyers and sellers. The current used equipment market is strong, but it will be affected by Tier IV machines in the near future.” In this most recent survey, most members are still unsure how Tier IV machines will hold their value when these models hit the used equipment market. Of the members surveyed, 37 percent believe Tier IV machines will
not retain their value as well as nonTier IV equipment, but many others believe Tier IV machines will have better resale value because many projects demand the use of Tier IV compliant equipment. If more construction projects demand the use of Tier IV machines, the residual value of non-tier IV machines will drop significantly. Currently, there are only a few Tier IV machines in the used equipment market; IEDA members predict that the market is 4 to 8 years away from being dominated by these newer machines. At that point, non-tier IV machines will be harder to come by, and pricing on Tier IV machines will become more steady. For more information, visit www.iedagroup.com. Case Construction Equipment Awards $25K Dire States Equipment Grant Case Construction Equipment has awarded the $25,000 Dire States Equipment Grant to the Tioga County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) in Tioga County, New York. The SWCD will use the equipment as part of its environmentally sensitive stream maintenance program that works with municipal officials and highway department staff to ensure scientifically sound maintenance practices in streams and waterways to mitigate damages from future flooding events. Local flooding events have had considerable impact on local infrastructure and communities in recent years. “Tioga County historically has been impacted by a number of both flash flood and flooding events,” said Wendy Walsh, director, Tioga County SWCD. “These have had a significant impact on our infrastructure including culverts, bridges and roadways. Benefits of this program will include improved coordination and cooperation between municipal staff and the SWCD, as well as expediting the permitting process with regulating agencies as municipal

departments show their growing knowledge of stream function and processes.” SWCD will use the grant to procure construction equipment from Case dealer Monroe Tractor to support the program. New training programs will begin this fall and extend into 2017. “The Tioga County SWCD project stood out to us because of its impact on multiple phases of infrastructure, from inland waterways to roads and bridges,” said Scott Harris, vice president — North America, Case Construction Equipment. “That’s our goal with Dire States: impacting real
infrastructure change at the local level to show how each community can affect change across numerous modes of infrastructure. This program embodies that for us.” The grant was awarded after soliciting submissions nationwide from local communities to use heavy equipment to improve a critical piece of infrastructure. The winner was chosen by a committee of representatives from Case. For more information, visit www.CaseCE.com.

along the west side. “GKFF is leading the effort to significantly enhance the River Parks by connecting three adjacent waterfront parcels to the existing system, which will create a broad and active civic commons that people of all ages and backgrounds will enjoy,” said Stava. “This project represents an opportunity to turn Tulsa’s waterfront into a force that will improve the city’s social, economic and environmental sustainability.” A Gathering Place photo
The removal work covers 66.5 acres.
The two areas are being connected by two 300-ft. (91.4 m) land bridges spanning the Arkansas River. Amenities include the fiveacre Chapman Adventure Playground; Williams Lodge; Peggy’s Pond; the ONEOK Boathouse; gardens; bike paths; various outdoor sports facilities; and two grand lawns that can be used to hold concerts and other public events — QuikTrip Lakeview Lawn, which can accommodate 1,800 people; and The Great Lawn, which will have a skate park and BMX track.
Phase 2 calls for a cultural museum to be built on seven acres at TGP fulfilling the city’s appetite for a children’s discovery and science center. The project is expected to be complete in 2019. The groundbreaking for Phase 1 occurred in Sept. 2014 and in July 2015 major dirt work and land contouring operations began. Crews from Crossland Heavy installed 190 large piers, 4 ft. (1.2 m) in diameter. They drilled 30 to 32 ft. (9 to 9.75 m) deep into bedrock for the two 300 ft. (91.4 m) A Gathering Place photo
Phase I is being constructed from 24th to 31st streets on the east and west sides of Riverside Drive and from 24th Street to 34th Street along the west side.
long land bridges and two side tunnels — 100 ft. (30.5 m) long — using tractor, drills and cranes. “They originally projected drilling three piers per-day,” said Stava, “but with the sandy soil along the riverbank, they were able to do five to six piers daily.” Nine new acres of land were created to increase the size of the park on the west side of the river. The new land will increase access to the river via trails, and the transition from the park on the eastern side of Riverside Drive to the border of the river on the western side will be seamless. Stava notes that a cofferdam, made of rock, was put in place in 2015 so that the new land could be created. “The dam allowed to us veer the water to the west side and create a dry area for the crews and their equipment,” he said. “Sherwood Construction then proceeded to construct the rock edges and put in place the fortification armoring to protect the bumpout extensions from erosion. Boulders are being used for the foundations, with each bumpout to be filled in with approximately 250,000 cubic yards of rock, sand, and silt dredged from the riverbed. The armoring prevents the bump-outs, when river levels rise, in high-water events, from being raked off and eroded.” The new shoreline will be completed by early 2017. The Tulsa County Vision Authority gave $4.5 million to the River see TULSA page 36

A $400 million public-private partnership is transforming more than 100 acres of central Tulsa, Okla., into a major park.
The project began in Sept. 2014 and Phase 1, covering 66.5 acres, is due to complete in late 2017. When completed, the park is expected to attract more than one million visitors annually.

IROCK’s Two-Deck TS-512 Offers Hassle-Free Setup IROCK’s TS-512 tracked screening plant gives small- to medium-sized producers a dependable and easy-to-use machine for sizing and sorting a wide range of materials, including aggregates, coal, concrete, gravel, limestone, sand and topsoil. IROCK Crushers, a leader in global sales of mobile crushing and screening equipment, designed the unit for fast and easy setup as well as hassle-free onsite mobility, according to the manufacturer. The TS-512 screener features two highenergy, two-bearing decks; a 12- by 5-ft. (3.6 by 1.5 m) top deck and a bottom deck that is 10 ft. 4 in. by 5 ft. (3.1 m), giving producers ample screening area of 112 sq. ft. (10.4 sq m). The interchangeable screen media gives producers versatility over end product size. The unit optimizes productivity with its 12-cu.-yd. (9 cu m) hopper and 100-hp Cat Tier III engine that enables the screener to process as much as 400 tons (363 tph) per hour of material. into stockpiles 16 ft. 5 in. (5 m) high. The TS-512 is the tallest in the industry, which allows operators to put more material under the belt before moving the screener from one stockpile to the next. Users can set up and tear down the screen fast and easily. Many components, such as the conveyors, are hydraulically powered so operators quickly and simply move them into place for production or fold them down
for transportation. The TS-512 also features intuitive, easy-to-use controls to further enhance efficiency, according to the manufacturer. IROCK built the TS-512 to withstand the rigors of day-to-day use. It features a solid, heavy-duty steel chassis that provides ultimate durability on the site and during transportation. Customers can choose the standard tracked model that optimizes maneuverability around the job site or the wheeled
version for fast and easy towing. Maintenance is simple with the TS-512’s easy-to-access engine compartment that provides generous room for repairing or replacing components. IROCK offers several additional features to customize the unit for specific applications. An optional remote-controlled livehead effectively sizes and loosens heavy, dirty and sticky debris from product before it enters the hopper. This expedites the screening process and boosts productivity. Users choose from the standard tethered remote or IROCK’s optional wireless remote for greater flexibility around the site. A crusher chute, gives producers the option to directly feed material into the hopper without removing the tipping grid. A single shaft shredder also is available for proper topsoil screening. MB Crusher America to Present Crushing, Screening Demos Over the years, MB Crusher America Inc. has drawn crowds to its World of Concrete booth with its live crushing demonstrations. The company has featured attachments designed for excavators and loaders. This year, the company will be screening live for the first time at World of Concrete 2017. MB Crusher has expanded its product line to include a new line of screening attachments designed for skid loaders, loaders and backhoes. At its booth, #O30619, in the Silver Lot, MB plans to feature a MB-LS140 screening attachment along with its MB-L140 crusher attachment. “Our attachments are solutions. When you use our attachments, you will be saving the time it takes to process and transport materials. You can then begin to save money
from any additional cost. This is the type of independence contractors can gain,” said Max Ravazzolo, C.E.O. of MB Crusher America. “You work with your own materials. Down the line, you can generate new revenue for your company with the materials you create.” The MB-LS140 is the smallest unit in the MB-LS series. It is designed as a trommel screen for loaders and skid loaders weighing 5,700 pounds. It has a load capacity of 0.66 cu. yd. (.5 cu m) and a basket depth of 21 in. (53 cm). It is created with a cone-shaped basket to increase production and allow contractors to quickly sift through material without residue. The MBLS140 can screen mixed materials, sift wet and dry materials, and clean superficial powder from nat-

ural stones. Similar to previous shows, MB will also be crushing concrete at a 6-in. (15 cm) minus with its MBL140 crusher bucket. The MBL140 is designed for skid loaders, loaders and backhoes. It has an adjustable output with a 29 in. (74 cm) wide by 10 in. (25 cm) high mouth opening, and has a load capacity of 0.3 cu. yd. (.23 cu m). It crushes hollow core walls, reinforced and non-reinforced con-
crete, natural stone and asphalt into reusable aggregate materials for base or fill. In addition to crushing and screening attachments, MB offers 360 degree rotation grapples and dual head rotary drum cutters for a wide scope of work, which includes demolition and excavation, road work, quarries, mining, pipeline work and environmental reclamation projects. MB’s attachments use the
hydraulic system on excavators, skid loaders and backhoes, and allow contractors the flexibility to work in tight areas, difficult access locations, steep slopes and urban areas. Contractors will be able to reuse materials immediately at the job site and provide a greener option in recycling waste materials. By reusing the materials, contractors and businesses can begin saving time and money in reducing waste and trucking costs. Fuchs MHL390 F Delivers With Long Reach Capacity Purpose built to deliver the long reach and high lift capacities required in port and high production scrap handling applications, the new heavy duty Fuchs MHL390 F material handler unseats the MHL380 handler as the largest and most productive machine in the Fuchs product line. With standard operating weights ranging from 167,990 to 191,000 lb. (76,200 to 86,636 kg), this new market standard for high capacity handling offers up to a 72.2-ft. (22 m) reach for large scrap yards and up to a 80.4-ft. (24.5 m) reach, with a banana boom configuration, to efficiently reach deep into a vessel’s hull in port applications. Whether moving coal, grain, logs, scrap or big bags, a variety of attachments can be effortlessly exchanged via a quick-attach coupling for fast and efficient material handling. Optional float operation automatically lifts the boom if too much pressure is applied, protecting sensitive surfaces from damage. The new handler also can be equipped with an overload warning system with height and reach limiter to more efficiently handle heavy loads. With its standard dual solid rubber tire drive, the massive undercarriage of the mobile MHL390 F material handler spreads machine weight over a broad 20.6- by 24.2ft. (6.3 by 7.4 m) area with its four-point outriggers to provide excellent stability when lifting heavy loads at extended reach. Oversized 34.2- by 29.5-in. (86 by 75 cm) stabilizer pads distribute the machine’s weight over a contact area 91 percent larger than the MHL380 handler’s pads, boosting stability while reducing ground contact pressure. Its robust four-wheel hydrostatic drive system enables the handler to travel docks at speeds reaching 5.0 mph (8 kmh), and the machine offers a 32.5-ft. (9.9 m) turning radius to navigate around obstacles. A 6-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine develops 402 hp (300 kW) output to power the new MHL390 F handler. Boasting double selective catalytic reduction (SCR) modules, this material handler does not require a diesel particulate filter (DPF) commonly found on Tier IV Final engines. This eliminates the need for passive filter regeneration and ensures uninterrupted material handler operation with lower fuel consumption. Separate hydraulically driven fans for oil, water and intercooler feature automatic fan speed control to continuously maintain optimum operating temperatures, even in extreme heat, while an available reversing fan helps to keep the radiator clear of debris. Working in concert with a two-stage air filtration system, large vent openings in the metal cowling increase airflow to the engine area to ensure the engine runs cooler. Three-stage “Eco Mode” engine operation allows the operator to fine-tune engine
RPM to the demand of the task at hand. “Power Mode” takes advantage of full engine speed for heavy duty applications such as feeding mega shredders and loading/unloading vessels. Operators can reduce engine speed by 12 percent in “Eco Mode” and 19 percent in “Eco+ Mode” while tackling less demanding applications like material clean-up and sorting to significantly reduce fuel consumption over “Power Mode.” The purpose-built MHL390 F handler includes robust design features that increase machine longevity at the port and scrap yard. A centrally mounted slewing ring offers 360 degree maximum load handling capabilities, and its rugged double-row slew ring design disperses load forces over two rows of bearings to improve service life. Large diameter hydraulic boom cylinders, with inverted mounting, offer reliable operation and superior protection from debris. Metal pipes line the top of the boom and side of the dipperstick for maximum protection from damage and outstanding durability. Hydraulically elevated to improve the operator’s sightline, the cab of this new heavy duty handler offers a maximum standard 21.0-ft. (6.4 m) eye-level operation and independent 7.2-ft. (2.2 m) forward move-
ment. For port applications, a special “port” cab raiser system is available on demand to elevate maximum eye level to 28.5 ft.(8.7 m). Inside the cab, the main 7.0-in. (17.8 cm) wide video graphics array (WVGA) touchscreen display offers intuitive machine function for more efficient operation. With video images shown on a separate color display, the MHL390 F handler comes standard with a review-view camera, while machines with the port lift cab riser option include a standard 360 degree camera system, enhancing visibility of the work area. The purpose-built handler’s joystick configuration places all critical machine movements within the operator’s reach and leaves room for customization. A central service platform on the upper carriage of the MHL390 F handler substantially reduces daily maintenance time. Service technicians quickly access the engine, fuel and DEF fill points, hydraulic oil tank, and central lubrication system from the platform, improving machine uptime. The automatic central lubrication system greases multiple points on the upper carriage throughout the day to increase machine reliability. Additionally, the Fuchs Telematics system, standard on the MHL390 F handler
in North America, allows customers to further optimize machine efficiency and helps to improve uptime by alerting key individuals of upcoming service intervals and potential machine issues. The new MHL390 F handler’s modular design, coupled with a long list of options, make this machine one of the most flexible on the market to meet specific application needs. Wheeled standard and extended undercarriages can be equipped with up to 2.6-ft. (0.8 m) and 4.6-ft. (1.4 m) pylon risers respectively to increase the operator’s sightline. Replacing the wheel drive system, standard and XL crawler undercarriages help to disperse machine weight over a larger area for lower ground contact pressure, while up to 2.6-ft. (0.8 m) and 12.1 ft. (3.7 m) pylon risers for the standard and XL undercarriages respectively can be added in between the upper and lower carriages. The MHL390 F material handler can be equipped with either a diesel or electric motor and can be configured for stationary operation, further increasing machine flexibility. Lokotrack® ST2.8™ exceeds expectations in making a clean cement additive That’s how we make the big difference, the Metso Way.
A Lokotrack ST2.8 mobile scalping screen is helping a cement plant produce a clean additive for its production process, resulting in significant cost savings. The operator is saving up to $20 a ton by producing the additive using the ST2.8, rather than buying it from an outside source. The Lokotrack ST2.8 has a larger throw than most machines in its size class, which allows it to produce a cleaner end product. The unit’s powerful Caterpillar C4.4 diesel engine meets the latest emissions standards, and a new hydraulic system helps to reduce fuel consumption. be stiffer, as indicated by higher creep compliance and indirect tensile strength values. Markwell Paving used the HMA mixes specified by ODOT to meet their requirements. ODOT smoothness requirements are stringent. With a straight-edge test, there can’t be more than a 1/8th-in. variance in a 10-ft. (3 m) section. “We beat the ODOT smoothness test and have paved what I’d argue is likely the smoothest section of U.S. 62 in its entirety,” Boatman stated. “We understand that 40 percent of our ability to do so well on a paving job is the equipment and the Stealth is clearly the significant contributor. And the other 60 percent is the crew — we have exceptional, experienced people. “The Stealth paver has been tremendously productive for us. We have four different guys that can run the Stealth — they all love it. Every project we’ve used this paver on, we’ve achieved the
bonus. Our Stealth is the first Tier IV e-series model Roadtec sold — serial number 3001. We literally bought it off the display floor at ConExpo 2014. The only modification we made was to change the screed to a Roadtec Eagle Screed.” With Markwell Paving being the first to buy the gravity-fed Roadtec SP-100e Stealth paver, it begs the question why? What sold them on the Stealth? “There are three reasons why buying the Stealth paver was for us
The project section of U.S. 62 is special because the road was built in 2000 when ODOT was switching from conventional HMA to Superpave.

a no-brainer: First, savings. The initial purchase price is substantially lower than a conventional paver. The ownership costs are lower — fewer moving parts means less maintenance. Plus, there are lower fuel costs — the Stealth’s fuel savings are tremendous. “Second, the machine is easy to operate, can be operated from either side of the paver, which

makes it visually easy to remain on top of the job. “And last, we get higher production because of the machine’s large 20-ton capacity hopper holds a full load from a 10 wheeler and we have faster production. The typical daily production with conventional paver is 1,500 to 1,800 tons per day — with the Stealth we’ve laid down as much as 3,000 tons in a day.” As the U.S. Route 62 highway rehab project comes to its end, Mike Boatman reflects on what will be his biggest takeaway from the project — the smoothness of the finished mat. “Driving the 7.5 mile stretch of Route 62 that we worked on should make any of us with the company feel proud of the work we’ve done. It is definitely the smoothest road in this part of the country.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s website at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

Parks Authority to help create the new land and support other shoreline upgrades. The dirt work is extensive. Bulldozers, working at low elevations, dug out the foundations for the new boathouse and shored the walls prior to the construction on the new lodge that overlooks the river. The construction of the lodge should be complete in Dec. 2017. At the south end of the two-acre pond, 18 ft. (5.5 m) of earth was excavated to create the pond prior to the start of the construction of the boathouse. The dirt work is critical to the project as the terrain, which appears to be relatively flat, is being heavily excavated and refashioned. Stava pointed out that the former Riverside Drive and adjacent brig green lawn, both 52 ft. (15.8 m) above present grade and the highpoints of the area, are being reworked. The project is international in scope as six 42 to 63 ft. (12.8 to 19.2 m) tall towers are being imported from Germany as part of Chapman Adventure Playground. The interactive towers, which include puzzles and games, and an educational component, are currently being delivered to Tulsa and constructed in preparation for future installation. The Sherwood Construction Company Inc. is responsible for the $33 million earthwork contract to remove roots and grass, as well as preserving the topsoil, which will be returned to the site. The removal work covers 66.5 acres.

The first 3 in. (7.6 cm) of the soil is cleared, piled, and shipped off site, while the topsoil, from 3 to 18 in. (45.7 cm), is removed and placed in large aerated piles via 4-in. (10 cm) perforated tubes on the construction site. This storage system ensures the potency of the soil when it is placed back into the ground. The material beneath the topsoil will be used as fill for the project. “By utilizing as much of the existing soil for either structural or horticultural mixing, it saves both time and money,” said Stava, pointing out “that this nutrient-rich soil will help to rapidly restore the vegetation and trees that were removed, with the trees being able to achieve the equivalent of 10 years growth in four or five years. We will be planting over 6,000 trees before the park is completed.” The project is ensuring that several

thousand employees of general contractors and subcontractors have secure work for the next six years. “The project is really important for the local economy as it is employing an average of 600 people on daily basis for several years and the money they earn is pumped back into the local economy,” said Stava. “The work is helping contractors get through the current oil and gas industry slump until better times return.” Some of the major subcontractors include Crossland Construction Company (construction manager); Sherwood Construction; Crossland Heavy Construction Company; BrightView Landscape; and LD Kearn Concrete. North Sheridan I-90 Project Includes Company Wants to Diamond Interchange, New Ramps Dredge in Part of INTERCHANGE from page 1
awarded the contract to Reiman Corp. of Cheyenne and High Country Construction Inc. of Lander, Wyo., in June. The work will complete in four phases over the next three-and-a-half years, with a completion date of Oct. 2019. The contractors began working on phase 1 in July. Phase 1 consists of grading operations and dirt work for the new interchange ramps and new interchange bridge. This work has taken place in the location of the new interchange near Vacutech on both the north and south sides of the interstate. To date, the contractor has moved about 450,000 cu. yds. (344,050 cu m) of dirt to create fill for the new interchange on/off ramps and the new bridge. The contractor will continue working on the bridge structures and pedestrian underpass through the winter as weather permits.
Phase 2, which will begin in the spring of 2017, consists of continuing construction of the new north interchange structure and the construction of the new on/off ramps. Work will begin on construction of the new alignments of North Main Street, Yellowtail Drive, Industrial Road and Decker Road. This work will include underground utility work, roadway and surfacing, lighting and enhancements, pedestrian underpass, sidewalks and pathways. Wyoming Department of Transportation officials and the contractor plan to hold a public meeting in the spring, outlining what motorists and pedestrians can expect during the 2017 construction season. Two-way traffic will be maintained with pilot car/flagging operations and all business access will remain open, but there will be delays. Phase 2 is expected to be complete in the fall of 2017.
Phase 3 will begin in 2018 and will consist of reconstructing north Main Street from Fort Road to Goose Creek. This will include underground utility work, roadway surfacing, side-street and business access tie-ins and improvements, lighting and enhancements, pedestrian sidewalks and pathways. Two-way traffic will be maintained with residential and business access open at all times. Other work in phase 3 will consist of isolated reconstruction/widening and new surfacing to the west bound lanes of I-90. Phase 4 will begin in 2019 and will consist of isolated reconstruction/ widening and new surfacing to the east bound lanes of I-90. The contractor also will complete all enhancements, clean up and reclamation work associated with the project. Gastineau Channel JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) Federal engineers will decide whether to allow dredging on part of Gastineau Channel so that barges with deeper drafts can dock south of Salmon Creek. The Juneau Empire reports Salmon Creek Development Co. submitted the request to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in early December. Joseph Smith filed the application on behalf of the development company, which plans to deepen the barge landing on Channel Drive by as much as 10 additional feet (3 m). Smith said the work timeline will depend on equipment availability. The dock receives deliveries of construction materials like gravel. Smith said these bulk products would be taken by truck through downtown Juneau if the barge landing stays as is. A deadline for people to submit public comment was scheduled for Jan. 9. Kenworth Awards Werner Enterprises Driver Top Honor A decorated former crew chief with the Blue Angels, who now drives for Werner Enterprises, was awarded the top honor in the “Transition Trucking: Driving for Excellence” recognition program, during a ceremony Dec. 16 at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation in Washington, D.C. Kenworth presented Troy Davidson a Kenworth T680 Advantage, equipped with a fuelefficient 455-hp PACCAR MX-13 engine, a comfortable 76-inch sleeper and Eaton Fuller Advantage 10-speed automated transmission. Davidson was awarded the Kenworth T680 as part of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Hiring Our Heroes Program, which was conducted in partnership with the FASTPORT Trucking Track Mentoring Program. MHC Kenworth — Omaha donated its services to help facilitate the Kenworth T680 Advantage award transaction to the winner. On hand to help Kurt Swihart, Kenworth marketing director, present the T680 keys to the former third class petty officer were Shannon DiBari, U.S. Chamber of Commerce chief operating officer; Eric Eversole, Hiring Our Heroes president and U.S. Chamber of Commerce vice president; and Brad Bentley, FASTPORT president. Franklin Parker, assistant secretary of the U.S. Navy, and Kevin Burch, chairman of the American Trucking Associations, also participated in the ceremonies. Davidson was one of three award finalists. The other two were Russell Hardy, a driver with Trimac Transportation who served in the Navy and Army during his 20-year military career; and Kevin Scott, a driver with TMC Transportation, who served as a sergeant and 15 Tango Blackhawk

helicopter mechanic and crew chief. Hardy and Scott each received a $10,000 award check. Davidson served in the U.S. Navy for 16 years, including his work as a jet engine mechanic crew chief with the U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, a coveted post for which he was recommended by Vice Admiral Thomas M. Buckee, commander of the U.S. Third Fleet from October 2000 to 2003. “I am really impressed with my new Kenworth T680,” said Davidson, who resides in Pensacola, Fla. “My Uncle Mark drove semi trucks for 30 years, up to the day he passed away. If he were alive today, I know he would still be driving, and he would be envious of me driving for Werner Enterprises, especially in this T680.” From the time he was a little boy
riding a tractor on his grandfather’s farm, Davidson said he has always had a fascination with big and powerful machines. It is part of the reason he worked on the engines of McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornets as a jet engine mechanic crew chief for the Blue Angels before transitioning to civilian life. Davidson has had prior experience with the T680. Before he received the award, he drove a 2015 Kenworth T680, which he nicknamed “Big Betsy.” “The T680, in my opinion, is the best of all the trucks on the road today,” Davidson said. “I appreciate the smooth quiet ride.” With the truck he received at the ceremony, Davidson has decided to eventually become an independent contractor. “For Kenworth to give its flagship model to help this very deserving former Navy crew chief
get a running start to his career demonstrates the company’s commitment to helping service members make these transitions,” said Hiring Our Heroes’ Eric Eversole. “When transitioning service members saw the T680 displayed at Hiring Our Heroes job fairs held across the country over the last year, they told us they saw the truck as a clear message of support for making the transition to trucking. I think it got many service members to think about the potential of a trucking career.” Brad Bentley, FASTPORT president, said the three finalists were determined by tallying scores from a selection committee. Davidson was chosen by visitors to the Transition Trucking website (www.transitiontrucking.org), where they could view a video of each driver and vote their choice for the top military veteran rookie
driver. Davidson received the highest tally — more than 259,000 votes. “The Transition Trucking: Driving For Excellence contest finalists embodied the attributes any company would want to have,” Bentley said. “These military service members who transitioned into careers as professional drivers are dependable, hard-working, motivated, ethical and disciplined team players.” Jason Skoog, Kenworth’s assistant general manager of sales and marketing, agreed. “Every year, hundreds of thousands of highly-skilled veterans like Troy, Russell Hardy and Kevin Scott transition from the military into civilian life.” It appears we succeeded in getting transitioning service members to look at a career in the trucking industry. And we hope it will inspire those in the trucking industry with hiring needs to take a closer look at the wealth of talent these service members can offer. “While all three finalists were deserving, I certainly can understand why Troy was chosen by the public as the top military veteran rookie driver,” Skoog said. “He represents all of the best qualities in so many of the transitioning service members we met at Hiring Our Heroes job fairs — a commitment to excellence, sacrifice, duty and honor. As much as Troy may have liked the Kenworth T680 that Werner assigned to him, we think he’s going to be even more pleased with his very own T680.” For more information, visit www.kenworth.com/drivers.

Somerset Welding Attains ISO 9001:2015 Certification J&J Truck Bodies & Trailers and J&J Truck Equipment announced the successful transition of their ISO 9001:2008 certification to the ISO 9001:2015 standard. ABS Quality Evaluations, a leading international auditing and certification body, issued the certificate of conformance, the scope of which applies to “Design and manufacture of dump bodies, trailers, pressure vessels and truck equipment; mobile hydraulic system design and installation; pressure vessel installation, repair and inspection; installation of vehicle mounted truck equipment; sale and repair of equipment used in construction, mining, energy and gas production, utilities, state and municipal governments; custom fabrications utilizing steel, stainless steel and aluminum.” J&J was one of the first truck body manufacturers in the United States to receive its ISO 9001 certification in 1997, and since then, has continued to improve processes and procedures with the mission of developing a culture of customer satisfaction. The company’s quality management system is based on the four pillars of J&J’s quality policy: Satisfying Customer Needs, Producing High Quality Products, Delivering On Time, and Improving Continuously. The quality policy provides the framework for set-
ting quality objectives and the metrics necessary to determine the effectiveness of the quality management system from the time an order is taken through post-delivery activities. The ISO standard requires an annual surveillance audit and a recertification audit every third year by an underwriting agency like ABS, to verify conformance to the ISO 9001 standard. Additionally, internal audits of processes and procedures are required to assure the organization is meeting our quality objectives. “At J&J, we believe that certifying our quality system through a third party like ABS demonstrates to our customers, J&J’s commitment to quality and that they can be confident investing in J&J’s products and services. Our quality system, over time, made us, and continues to make us, a better company that believes in continuous improvement,” said Michael Riggs, sr. vice president. Transfer Flow⁄
Tank Nearly Doubles Capacity Transfer Flow, a leader in aftermarket fuel tank systems, has introduced a 50-gal. highcapacity replacement fuel tank for the 2016 Nissan Titan XD diesel truck. The Transfer Flow 50-gal. midship replacement tank will provide Nissan Titan XD owners with nearly double the fuel capacity and driving range over its stock 26-gal. tank. Transfer Flow’s Nissan Titan XD highcapacity replacement tank is available from the company through its web site at www.transferflow.com or by calling 800/826-5776. It also can be purchased through one of the company’s hundreds of dealers in the United States, Canada and Australia. The fuel tank comes complete with everything needed for installation and use, including straps, mounting hardware and easy-tofollow illustrated instructions for installing the tank. Installation can be done in a couple of hours by the customer, a qualified mechanic or one of Transfer Flow’s 320+ authorized installers listed at www.transferflow.com/installation. The tank is constructed from high-yield
domestic 12-gauge aluminized steel and powder-coated for a durable satin black finish, ensuring strength, durability and superior corrosion resistance. Like all its aftermarket fuel systems, this new offering for the Nissan Titan XD comes with Transfer Flow’s 6-year unlimited mileage warranty. Nissan’s Titan XD made news in 2016 with the launch of its 5.0-L Cummins turbodiesel-powered trucks that aimed to redefine what qualifies as a heavy duty truck. But as owners put the Titan XD’s 310 hp and 555 lb.-ft. of toque to the test, hauling or pulling heavy loads, mileage and driving range will suffer. Enter Transfer Flow, which improves the truck’s driving range and allows drivers to stop to refuel less often and be more selective about where they purchase fuel and at what prices they do so. For more information, call 800/826-5776 or visit www.transferflow.com. (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s website at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)
