Texas Asphalt Pavement Association Returns With Its 46th Annual Meeting While bearings are still an important element of Texas Bearing Company’s offering, more than 35 years later it can now boast being among the most rapidly-expanding aggregate equipment dealers in the United States.
What’s in a Name? Texas Bearing Company Expands Into Successful Crushing, Screening Business When William Shakespeare famously questioned, “What’s in a name?” he wasn’t referencing an equipment distributor in Texas, but he could have been. You will not find the words equipment or aggregate in the company moniker, but Texas Bearing Company (TBC) is steadily establishing itself as a force in the crushing and screening industry, while admittedly facing an identity challenge resulting from the company name. The Amarillo-based company, established in 1985, was primarily involved in the sale of bearings, hydraulics and power transmission for the first decade of its existence. And, while bearings are still an important element of the company’s offering, more than 35 years later it can now boast being among the most rapidly-expanding aggregate equipment dealers in the United States. The company represents Astec crushing and screening machines in most of Texas, and that contributes to “the name game,” as the line of aggregate equipment formerly known as KPIJCI was recently re-branded as “Astec.” This might confuse the average aggregate producer or sand and gravel pit operator, but it hasn’t seemed to hinder the dealer’s growth pattern. After operating for approximately 20 years with branches in Amarillo and nearby Hereford, the company now has six branches serving the majority of the state.
Lone Star Paving of Austin was one of the award winners at the Texas Asphalt Pavement Association’s annual meeting, which honors technicians, contractors, material suppliers and TxDOT branches. See full coverage of the award ceremony on page 10.

Texas Transportation Commission Approves 10-Year Plan The Texas Transportation Commission recently unanimously approved TxDOT’s 10-year plan retaining allocations for funding the I-45 improvement project in Houston. The project, commonly known as the North Houston Highway Improvement Project, or NHHIP, is supported by the majority of people who commented during the Unified Transportation Program’s (UTP) public comment period. TxDOT received thousands of comments on the NHHIP during the UTP’s 30-day public comment period, with two-thirds of them submitted in support of maintaining the NHHIP as proposed for funding in the UTP. However, since the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) still has the project on pause, the commission chose to approve the UTP and retain the proposed funding on the project with a caveat to revisit the decision in 90 days to allow time for federal and state partners to address project concerns. “We received more than 12,000 comments on this update to the UTP with more than 8,000 specific to the NHHIP and more than 5,500 of them in support of the NHHIP as funded in our plan,” The UTP guides the development of transportation work across the state and said Texas Transportation Chairman J. authorizes the distribution of construction dollars expected to be available. Bruce Bugg Jr. The NHHIP will address critical needs, including updating the highways to current design and safety standards, relieving traffic congestion, improving storm water drainage and improving the evacuation routes. The NHHIP will add four managed express lanes on I-45 from downtown Houston to Beltway 8 North; reroute I-45 to be parallel with I-10 on the north side of downtown Houston and parallel to U.S. 59/I-69 on the east side of downtown Houston; realign sections of I-10 and I-69 in the downtown area to eliminate the current roadway reverse curves that limit capac- The NHHIP will add four managed express ity; and depress I-69 between I-10 and lanes on I-45 from downtown Houston to Spur 527 south of downtown to improve Beltway 8 North; reroute I-45 to be parallel with I-10 on the north side of downtown safety by eliminating unsafe weaving. Bear Down for Success: TBC Conquers Crushing, Screening
After operating for approximately 20 years with branches in Amarillo and nearby Hereford, the company now has six branches serving the majority of the state. BEARING from page 1
Always About the Customer Ultimately, according to Berry Smith, president of TBC, names are secondary to the way customers perceive the service they receive, and TBC has excelled in that area. “In fact, our focus on customer service has resulted in steady and at times dramatic growth over the last decade,” Smith said. “We have always been very engaged with our customers and make decisions based on their needs. We offer the feedback they want and need, and partner with them both in the decision and execution. Our entire focus is customer service. If a plant is down, we move [into action].” Smith’s son, Anthony, is operations manager, and he shares his father’s commitment to the customer. “We are problem solvers,” said Anthony. “We are there to hold our customer’s hand as they become educated in the function, safety and maintenance of the machines. We can be so much more flexible than ‘the big guys’ when it comes to reacting to customer needs.”
Texas Bearing Company, established in 1985, was primarily involved in the sale of bearings, hydraulics and power transmission, but is steadily establishing itself as a force in the crushing and screening industry.
Growing Right Out of the Gate Berry’s father, BF Smith, founded the company in 1985 and offered bearings, power transmission replacement parts, along with hydraulic and pneumatic pumps and tools. In 1997, TBC began selling the Kolberg-Pioneer, now Astec, line of aggregate equipment. With Amarillo and the panhandle being home to many independent sand and gravel pits, there was an immediate market for the equipment. The local nature of TBC’s business began to change after 2000 when branches were opened in both Lubbock and Odessa. BF retired in 2010 and Berry assumed leadership of the company, with sons Anthony and Adam playing major roles. Adam is aggregate product manager for TBC’s entire territory.
Expanding With Astec West Texas is a lucrative market, but the Smiths are native Texans and were keenly aware that Houston, Dallas and Austin presented huge opportunities for growth in the aggregate world. Negotiations with Astec were soon under way for representation in those major markets. Ultimately, branches were opened in Mansfield, on the south side of the DFW metroplex, and in Columbus — centrally located to Houston, Austin and San Antonio. “Based on our previous relationship with TBC, the decision was made to grant them the additional territory,” said Darren Kirby, North America sales director - central at Astec. “Their responsiveness to the customer and the urgency with see BEARING page 14

Texas Bearing Company Leans On Astec Equipment BEARING from page 8
According to TBC President Berry Smith, business is strong, driven by a strong Texas economy with lots of highway construction.
which they respond to a customer’s needs is great second to none. They have very high customer service rankings.” A couple of unique factors help distinguish TBC from other businesses, according to Kirby. “They are still family-owned, and many end users like doing business with that model,” he said. “The continuity in attitude, specifically when it pertains to customer service, can be attractive.” “Additionally, TBC is not a rolling stock dealer,” Kirby said, referring to the fact that the dealer does not sell excavators, skid steers, etc. “They have a singular focus on their core business, and they continue to be dedicated to Astec.” Kirby said the Smiths are routinely among the top dealers for Astec equipment nationally. When asked about their name, Kirby said, “Well, we’ve always referred to them as TBC, so there is will be no confusion moving forward.” TBC Today, Tomorrow Having garnered the KPI-JCI and Astec Mobile Screens (Astec) “President’s Award” in both 2019 and 2020, Berry said his company is poised for growth, which remains dependent on TBC’s continued service to the end user. “For an aggregate equipment distributor, we put a lot of emphasis on our service department,” he said, adding that they operate five full-time service trucks and have eight technicians devoted entirely to the aggregate side of the business. Amarillo continues to serve as TBC headquarters, but the majority of its inventory is in Odessa, Mansfield and Columbus, as dictated by the market. Business is strong, Berry said, driven by a strong Texas economy with lots of highway construction. The supply side is, of course, a concern. The contractor, Richard Drake Construction Company LP, was granted 96 working days, weather permitting, to complete this project valued at more than $4.5 million. The target completion date for this work is spring 2022, officials said. The project will extend along U.S. 271 from its intersection with SH 37 in Bogata, Texas, to the Franklin-Titus County line, approximately 8.3 mi. U.S. 59 Bridge Over I-20 to Be Replaced, Raised The U.S. 59 overpass crossing Interstate 20 in Marshall will be replaced during the next three years, according to plans approved in August by TxDOT. “The current overpass will be demolished and replaced one half at a time with a higher structure,” said Wendy Starkes, area engineer of TxDOT in Marshall. “We will also be raising the new structure about three feet to allow for 19 feet of clearance over the I20 traffic lanes.” The construction work will done one side at a time so traffic can continue to use the route. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction. East Texas Bridge of Longview was awarded the contract for the construction on the project with a bid of $11.9 million. Work on the project began in October of this year and take about 30 months to complete, Starkes said.
