Toyota Motors Opens $1B, North American HQ in Plano Toyota Motor North America Inc. celebrated the official opening of its new North American headquarters in Plano, Texas, with a gala event attended by dignitaries, partners and community leaders who had the first glimpse of Toyota’s new corporate campus that reaffirms the company’s longstanding commitment to the United States. “The opening of our new headquarters in Plano is an extraordinary next step in Toyota’s 60-year journey in the United States,” said Jim Lentz, CEO of Toyota in North America. “With team members from four different companies together in one campus location, we believe this will inspire greater collaboration, innovation and faster decision making as we turn to and lead the future of mobility, all with an eye on our customers.” Lentz added, “We appreciate the support from President Trump of our continued commitment to investing in the U.S. and sustaining American jobs.” Congratulating Toyota on its grand opening, the company received a written statement

from the White House, signed by the President. Three years ago, Toyota announced its “One Toyota” initiative to create more unified operations in North America, in part, by

bringing together its quality engineering, sales, marketing, financial services, and corporate functions in one location. Since then, the company has invested

about $1 billion on the project to build its new corporate campus on 100 acres in Plano and move thousands of team members and their families from California, Kentucky and beyond to North Texas. With construction nearly complete, occupancy began in late spring, and an average of a couple hundred team members per week are moving in, which is expected to continue in phases through December. Celebrating its 60-year anniversary in the United States this year, Toyota has long been part of America’s cultural fabric. Toyota’s U.S. commitment includes: • $23.4 billion in direct investment; • 10 manufacturing assembly facilities around the country; • nearly 1,500 Toyota and Lexus dealerships; and • 136,000 direct and dealer employees. In addition, earlier this year, Toyota said it will spend $10 billion in U.S. capital investments over the next five years, an outlay that includes the construction of its Plano headsee TOYOTA page 12

Two narrow bridges on U.S. 271 in northwest Titus County will be replaced over the next couple of years, according to plans approved in June by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). “We will be replacing the bridges crossing Ripley Creek and Ripley Creek Relief,” said Bill Compton, area engineer of TxDOT in Mount Pleasant. “The current structures are 26 feet wide, and the new ones will be 44 feet wide with two 12foot traffic lanes and 10-foot shoulders on each side. We also will be raising the elevation of the bridges about nine feet to improve drainage under the bridges.” The new bridges will be constructed to the northeast of the current highway, so traffic will continue to use the current facilities while the work is being conducted. Longview Bridge and Road of Longview was awarded the contract for the project with a bid of $9.0 million. Work on the project should begin in September and take about 26 months to complete, Compton said. New Houston Area Dealership Focuses on Equipment Options Willie Swisher and Mike Farley recently acquired Noble Rents, Inc. in what they call the “reinvention” of the former Noble Iron equipment dealership in Houston. Along with a new name, Prime Equip Solutions, the company also has a “new capital structure — and most importantly, a new strategic direction,” said the business partners. Prime Equip Solutions’ new direction is built around offering customers the choice of “rent, own or flex”, and the company’s equipment line will be anchored by two manufacturers with strong ties to Texas — LiuGong and Dressta. Options Galore “Customers come in all shapes and sizes,” Swisher said, regarding his company’s “Rent-Own-Flex” program, which allows customers to buy a piece of equipment, rent it, or in the case of the flex option, rent it with the goal of future own-

are needed when buying, such as transportation. Ownership, Swisher said, is often the appropriate option when the contractor has steady work for the machine and a capital budget that allows for the purchase. Swisher believes the Flex option will be popular among those customers who are unable to purchase outright at the time they need the equipment. This could be a good fit for contractors who are unsure of their future workload going forward. The Flex option can be used without a down payment. The Rent-Own-Flex program is just one component of what is seen as a total company philosophy to help contractors with their equipment needs. “Our challenge is to find solutions,” Swisher and Farley said. “We train our people to be problem solvers, not order takers. When we solve problems, we build relationships.”

Charles Cornett, Prime Equip Solutions service director, is laser focused on providing the right service solution for Prime’s customers.

Prime Equip Solutions’ new direction is built around offering customers the choice of “rent, own or flex,” and the company’s equipment line will be anchored by two manufacturers with strong ties to Texas — LiuGong and Dressta.

ership. Customers may choose the rent option for a host of reasons: • They may only need the particular machine on a short-term basis; • They may have a demand for the equipment today that they do not anticipate will continue; or • They may lack the capital resources or other resources that

Strengthening Support The dealership also is putting a renewed focus on service. They brought in Charles Cornette as the company’s new service director. Cornette had previously worked for H&E Equipment and United Rental. Cornette is excited about bringing the LiuGong and Dressta lines to Prime’s service area.

A Dressta bulldozer is loaded and ready for delivery to a Prime Equip Solutions customer in the Houston area.

“I see LiuGong as comparable to other equipment on the market,” he said. “Both lines represent a good value for the dollar, and the proximity of LiuGong’s parts warehouse, in nearby Katy [Texas] will be a huge benefit to our customers. Dressta has also impressed me with their customer service, especially after having recently flown a support person in from

Poland to assist with us an issue in the field.” Currently, Prime Equip Solutions has four service technicians, who provide a rapid response time for onsite repairs. While Prime Equip Solutions’ sales efforts will focus on LiuGong and Dressta, the company also offers parts, service and maintenance contracts for all major lines.

Lucky Number 13 The company’s service area is the 13-county region surrounding Houston (essentially, from the southern Louisiana border, west to the College Station area.) They expect the company’s business to have a mix of 65 percent earthmoving and 35 percent aerial access, which was a focus of Noble Rents. Mid to large size contractors use both, especially road and bridge builders. Their longrange goal is to “create a dealership second to none in Texas, while focusing on our 13 counties.” “I’m proud to be a Texan, and it was time to come home,” Swisher said. “But that isn’t all … we’re here to stay and we won’t be blind to opportunities to expand to other parts of Texas, as well.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s website at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) Texas Chooses FAE’s MTM225 for Stabilization on Rail Project By Stefano Leghissa FAE USA INC.

The Lone Star State has always been at the forefront of new infrastructure developments, and some of the 2016-17 mega projects on the books confirm it. Together with comprising four major intercontinental airports, the eighth busiest port by container volumes, and more than 80,000 mi. of highway, Texas is gearing up its railroad infrastructure development. One of the prime examples of this trend is the TEXRail project. TEXRail is a 27.2-mi. passenger railroad project which will link downtown Fort Worth to Texas’ largest intercontinental airport: Dallas-Fort Worth International. The new line will serve as an alternative to the congested highways and to the TRE, the current commuter railroad which doesn’t have direct access to the airport. The project includes nine new stations; repurposing of portions of an old railroad line; new railroad construction; new level crossings; new signaling; and new utilities. The lead contractor chosen for this job was AWH, a joint venture formed by Archer Western (Walsh Group) and Herzog Contracting Corp. Both contractors have extensive and proven experience in the railroad and mass infrastructure industry. As it often happens, most behemoth projects are performed with the help of several subcontractors who will carry out certain specific parts of the project. AWH awarded all the dirt work and utilities to the Reyes Group-Texas. With head offices in both Chicago and Dallas-Fort Worth, the Reyes Group has performed several paving, mass excavation, stabilization/reclamation and concrete jobs for both private and public customers in several states. One of the main challenges that the dirt work portion of the job presented was the very small right-of-way (ROW); the disruption of both vehicular and railroad traffic; and very tight spots that needed asphalt reclamation and stabilization. In order to solve this problem, the Reyes Group turned to FAE USA Inc. and their local dealer, AgPower Inc. The FAE Group — parent company of FAE USA Inc. — is a multinational company that designs, manufactures and markets mulching, rock crushing, asphalt reclaiming and soil stabilizing equipment. One of its flagship units is the MTM225 Multitask unit. The MTM225 is a tractor-driven machine capable of performing soil stabilization (up to 16 in.), asphalt reclamation (up to ca. 10 in.), stump grinding and rock pulverizing all with the same tooth and rotor — hence the “multitask” in MTM. With a working width of 92 in. and overall

Ag-Power was able to provide a John Deere 8360R tractor and become a onestop-shop for the Reyes Group’s service and parts needs.

width of 107 in., the MTM225 solves several space and production problems, usually incurred with self-propelled units. The advanced water system allows for water, and in some instances chemical stabilizing agents, to be pumped from the water truck and injected into the crushing chamber, suppressing dust and cooling off teeth and rotor. FAE USA Inc. signed a dealership agreement in 2016 with the local John Deere Ag dealer, Ag-Power Inc., which currently has 10 locations in Texas, six in Missouri and one in Arkansas. Ag-Power was able to provide a John Deere 8360R tractor and become a one-stop-shop for the Reyes Group’s service and parts needs. “We are very pleased with the performance of the unit,” said Jackie Shadic, operations manager of Reyes Group-Texas, “Its low CAPEX, OPEX and versatility allow us to be more and more competitive every day.” The project is poised to be completed by 2018, confirming Texas’s commitment to timely developed mass transit projects. engineering, kinesiology, health and nutrition and psychology have created a university-wide brain health initiative. UTSA researchers are conducting collaborative studies to better understand how the brain functions and how mechanisms impact systems like learning, memory and motivation. Focus areas include brain signaling and circuits, neurodegenerative disease, traumatic brain injury, regenerative medicine, medicinal chemistry, neuroinflammation and drug design. “Some of the greatest challenges we deal with as a society today surround the brain and devastating diseases including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Our research is advancing a greater understanding of how the brain works, how we

address brain injuries, particularly with soldiers, and how we combat degenerative conditions,” said George Perry, dean of the UTSA college of sciences. The science and engineering building also will house UTSA’s new chemical engineering program, which launches this fall. The bachelor’s program will prepare students for careers in the oil and gas, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, environmental engineering and materials engineering industries. The building will include a two-story distillation column that will allow chemical engineering students to study different types of mixtures, just as practicing chemical engineers do in industrial facilities. The instrument was made possible by a gift from Bill and Margie Klesse through the Klesse

Foundation. The SEB also will include 17,000 sq. ft. of engineering makerspace, a dedicated gathering area where people with similar engineering and technology interests can collaborate on projects by sharing ideas, equipment, materials and knowledge. The floor plan also includes space for the center for innovation and technology entrepreneurship to help faculty members and students take UTSA discoveries, products and services to market. “Having the resources this building will bring to our chemical engineering program will make UTSA an even more powerful research university and help us recruit additional top students and researchers,” said UTSA JoAnn Browning, college of engineering

dean. “The makerspace is an especially valuable tool. For the first time, our engineering students will have a dedicated space to apply their knowledge and innovative concepts and turn them into tangible applications.” Another of the building’s unique features will be the magnitude of its exterior and interior glass. Many of the laboratories in the building will be surrounded in glass so students and visitors can witness the work underway, a concept referred to as science on display. The goal is to encourage interaction among students from different majors and create opportunities for students to connect with people who have different interests. In addition to engaging more students in research, the approach has been shown to

improve student retention and graduation rates. The SEB will be the first new building completed at UTSA since the North Paseo building opened on the main campus in 2014. It will be located east of the biotechnology, sciences and engineering (BSE) building. The majority of the funding for the $95 million building comes from tuition revenue bonds, approved by the Texas legislature during its 2015 session. UTSA is ranked among the top 400 universities in the world and among the top 100 in the nation, according to Times Higher Education. quarters and improvements to its existing manufacturing facilities. The company will have jobs for up to 4,000 Toyota team members in Plano. In addition to the employees who chose to relocate, Toyota previously announced that it would hire more than 1,000 new team members from the rich mix of local talent and elsewhere. More than 90 percent of the company’s new hires from the past year for positions in Plano have come from the North Texas market. Toyota has already filled more than 75 percent of its open positions. “The greatest resource we have here in the Lone Star State is our highly-skilled workforce that draws global businesses like Toyota to Texas every day,” said Gov. Greg Abbott. “The 4,000 jobs added and Toyota’s impressive new facility are proof of the remarkable momentum of Texas’ continuing economic expansion. I am proud that Toyota is expanding here, and I thank them for their

Inspired by One Toyota Vision, Sustainability The new campus supports the company’s One Toyota vision with spaces that intentionally create and foster a transparent environment, encourage the fun of discovery, and make Toyota a place where people want to come to collaborate and innovate. Among the seven buildings is a large central courtyard that serves as the literal and symbolic heart of all social and business functions – including dining, fitness, and conferencing facilities. Additionally, Toyota demonstrates its commitment to sustainability with consideration for the environment as it aims to achieve LEED Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council by offering: • Exterior landscaping reflects the native habitat, with drought resistant plants; • a Texas-sized 8.79-megawatt

array of more than 20,000 solar panels; • a commitment to use only renewable energy, purchasing all electricity not generated by the solar panels from wind generated by Texas farms; and • a rainwater harvesting system, up to 400,000 gal., to use in irrigation. “Our new campus has fun, unexpected, and even playful features that reflect our commitment to be a world-class leader in innovation with state-of-the-art facilities and cutting-edge technologies,” said Doug Beebe, general manager of real estate and facilities for Toyota Motor North America. “It also is a great example of Toyota’s commitment to environmental sustainability. Because of its architecture, its central location, and the lively, flourishing community around it, we can share ideas and make great things happen here. We are proud of this campus because we have designed it to allow team members to get out of their office space and come togeth-

er. And, that’s really the spirit of One Toyota.” Professionals who led this project include a host of Dallas-based firms: KDC Real Estate Development & Investments to develop and build the campus, architect Corgan Associates to design the campus, and Austin Commercial to manage the construction. Also, commercial real estate firm JLL was the tenant representative. Construction at the campus included the pouring of more than 142,500 yds. of concrete; installation of more than 12 acres of glass; and enough Texas limestone to equal the weight of 340 Texas-built Toyota Tundra 1794 Edition trucks. At its peak, there were approximately 2,000 workers on site daily, putting in more than five million hours of work on the project. Campus Opening Marked by Dignitaries, Celebrities To mark the occasion of the opening, the company is holding a special celebration for more than 300

guests. Speakers included Jim Lentz, Plano Mayor Harry LaRosiliere, and other Toyota and other local government representatives. “We are so pleased to finally welcome all of Toyota’s team members to Plano and celebrate the opening of this wonderful new facility,” LaRosiliere said. “Toyota has already proven to be a great corporate citizen and neighbor, and we look forward to the continued impact it will have not only on Plano, but on the whole North Texas region.” Guests were welcomed with a musical performance by the local Plano Symphony, performance by vertical dance group pioneers, Bandaloop; as well as a fine dining experience from noted celebrity Chef Dean Fearing. Tours of the new campus were provided as part of the evening’s activities. For more information, visit toyotanewsroom.com.
