Funds Set for 46 Transportation Projects in U.S.

Linder Hosts TopCon Demo in Lakeland...8

When completed, 36 mi. (60 km) of new four-lane interstate will extend I-49 North from I220 in Shreveport to the Arkansas state line. Divided into 11 segments (A to K), the project is estimated to be completed sometime in 2016 at a cost of $622 million. Referred to in Louisiana as the North-South Expressway, this new segment will be a divided, fully controlled access highway with a 4-ft. (1.2 m) inside shoulder and a 10-ft. (3 m) outside shoulder in Caddo Parish, La. It will end at the Arkansas state line at a point intended to align with the planned orientation of the highway north of the state line, as specified in the Final Environmental Impact Statement from Texarkana, Ark., to the Louisiana state line.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced that 46 transportation projects in 33 states and Puerto Rico will receive a total of $511 million from the third round of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s popular TIGER program. The announcement comes months ahead of schedule and will allow communities to move forward with critical, job-creating infrastructure projects including road and bridge improvements; transit upgrades; freight, port and rail expansions; and new options for bicyclists and pedestrians. The Department of Transportation (DOT) received 848 project applications from all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C., requesting a total of $14.29 billion, far exceeding the $511 million made available for grants under the TIGER III program. “The overwhelming demand for these grants clearly shows that communities across the country can’t afford to wait any longer for Congress to put Americans to work building the transportation projects that are critical to our economic future,” said LaHood. “That’s why we’ve taken action to get these grants out the door quickly, and that is why we will continue to ask Congress to make the targeted

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) Property owners whose land and homes lie in the path of the long-planned Southern Wake Expressway have filed a class-action lawsuit against the state, alleging their property rights are being violated. The N.C. Turnpike Authority is expected to begin construction in 2014 on the final 30-mi. section of the I-540 Outer Loop through southern and eastern Wake County. The project languished for nearly two decades as the N.C. Department of Transportation was unable to secure funding. Current plans are to build the six-lane expressway from Apex to Knightdale as a toll road. The lawsuit was filed in Wake County Superior Court in September. But lawyers for the homeowners issued a statement Nov. 21 saying the state is taking private property without paying just compensation, as required by the U.S. Constitution. The property owners contend in their lawsuit that they have essentially been trapped in their homes, unable to sell or fully utilize their property, since DOT took legal action in 1996 to prevent development in the corridor. The lawsuit seeks to force DOT to buy their property and reimburse them for property taxes and other expenses borne in the meantime. “Private property rights are one of the cornerstones of our free society,” said Kieran J. Shanahan, a Raleigh lawyer representing the property owners. “The NCDOT has effectively held these property owners — who are taxpayers, I might add — hostage for the past 15 years. These families have been deprived of their Constitutional right to use, enjoy and receive the value of their private property.” The lawsuit names five plaintiffs with Apex addresses, but said up to 125 property owners could eventually be included in the class action. DOT spokeswoman Greer Beaty said the agency is reviewing the lawsuit, but could not immediately comment.

Linder Hosts TopCon Demonstration in Lakeland, Fla.

L

The PC240LC excavator is turned over to an operator.

inder Industrial Machinery, the Komatsu dealer in Florida and the Carolinas, recently hosted a one-day event featuring TopCon machine control systems on a Komatsu dozer, motorgrader and excavator. Attendees enjoyed a barbecue lunch, followed by a brief presentation and the opportunity to try out the equipment with the TopCon machine control systems. A course was set up for running the Komatsu D65-17 dozer and GD655 motorgrader, while the PC240LC excavator had its own spot for operators to try out the digging depth control feature. Brief instructions were given to the operators and then they got to experience the machine control system first hand One of the most popular machines was the D65-17 dozer equipped with TopCon’s 3DMC2 Inertial Sensor system. This is the first Komatsu machine equipped with a TopCon plug and play system. One of the advantages of this system, according to Roger Croft, Lengemann of Florida, is that the system can be set and then the dozer can run in third gear at full throttle and deliver a level grade. Representative were on hand from both Komatsu and Lengemann of Florida, the TopCon dealer, as well as Linder.

Once the instruction are given, the operator is turned loose with the D65.

Ron Schwieters (R), Komatsu representative, explains how the system is installed on the excavator.

The GD655 motor grader is off and running with the operator getting instructions from Roger Croft of Lengemann of Florida.

Brief instructions prepared the operator to run the system.

Visitors at the demo enjoyed a barbecue lunch while a speaker addressed the crowd.

T

ractor & Equipment Company (TEC) recently held a customer appreciation event at its Montgomery, Ala., branch facility. More than 200 guests made their way to the evening event to enjoy some juicy steaks hot off the grille and all the sides. The Tractor & Equipment employees cooked steaks for their customers on the same “TEC custom mobile grille” that was used extensively for preparing meals for those that were devastated by the tornadoes that swept through Alabama last spring. Representatives of Komatsu, Dynapac, LeeBoy, Fecon, Wirtgen, Schwarze and others turned out to lend their support for the hugely successful event and supplied additional door prizes. Some manufacturers also brought additional equipment for guests to demo. Door prizes included $50 Bass Pro Shop gift certificates, and YETI coolers. The coolers were a big hit as anyone who has a YETI cooler attests to the fact that it can keep ice for two to five days. Montgomery Branch Manager, David Maddox stated, “We were truly blessed to have such a great turnout. The manufacturers were a tremendous help in putting this on and we certainly appreciate them. This was simply an event to say thank you and show our customers just how important they are to us. We were extremely grateful that they were Bob Candee (L) of Fecon presents a $50 Bass Pro able to take time out of their busy schedules and stop by and spend some Shop gift card to prize winner John Brown, J.C. time with us.” Brown Construction, Prattville, Ala.

Deep in discussion of the latest construction trends in the Alabama market are Harry Ward (L), Ward & Ward, Auburn, Ala., and Dan Stracener, TEC president.

Discussing the LeeBoy products offered by TEC (L-R) are Brian Hall, regional representative of LeeBoy; Joe Patton, TEC regional sales manager; and Ricky Ward, Red Eagle Sand & Gravel, Montgomery, Ala.

Breast Cancer Awareness…

Blanchard Adds New Pink Light Tower to Its Rental Fleet Doosan Portable Power dealer Blanchard Machinery Inc. of Miami, Fla., has added a newly branded pink LSC (LightSource Compact) light tower to its rental fleet by winning a lottery in October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. All Doosan Portable Power dealers in the United States and Canada had the opportunity to enter the lottery for the chance to purchase one of three pink Doosan Portable Power machines — the LSC light tower, a G25 mobile generator and a P185 portable air compressor. The three pieces of equipment were painted pink to raise breast cancer awareness within the industry and support the Charlotte Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the U.S.’s leading breast cancer awareness and research organization. “When we saw that Doosan Portable Power was promoting breast cancer awareness, we also wanted to support the cause,” said Scott Baxter, president of Blanchard Machinery. “We’ve been affected personally — and businesswise — by breast cancer. “We’re eager to take ownership of the LSC. It will be utilized as part of our rental

fleet and we’re going to try to rent it primarily for use at special events to continue to raise awareness and publicize the cause.” The LSC light tower is designed to meet

rigorous rental standards. The LSC is ideal for illumination of special events, road and bridge construction, emergency and disaster relief, and general construction sites, accord-

ing to the manufacturer. The LSC portable light tower features a compact platform for job site mobility as well as truckload maximization. The light tower also utilizes up to 20 percent less space during storage and full operational deployment compared to the industry average, while maintaining its wind stability, static roll threshold and 30-ft. (9 m) extension capabilities. The LSC is designed and manufactured in America at the Doosan Portable Power global headquarters in Statesville, N.C., an ISO 9001 facility. With Blanchard Machinery’s purchase of the pink LSC, Doosan Portable Power donated $2,000 to the Charlotte Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Through Blanchard Machinery headquarters in North Miami, Fla., and two branch locations in South Miami and West Palm Beach, the company services the light equipment needs of South Florida, the Bahamas, Caribbean and Latin America. Blanchard Machinery has been working with Doosan Portable Power equipment since its inception in 1946.

Outlook Report Forecasts Rise in Equipment Investment The Equipment Leasing & Finance Foundation (the Foundation) launched its 2012 Equipment Leasing & Finance U.S. Economic Outlook. The new report, which is focused on the $628 billion equipment finance sector, forecasts equipment investment and capital spending in the United States and evaluates the effects on various related and exogenous factors in play currently and into the foreseeable future. Overall, the report forecasts investment in equipment and software will grow by nine percent in 2012. The Foundation produced the 2012 Equipment Leasing & Finance U.S. Economic Outlook report in partnership with economics and public policy consulting firm Keybridge Research. The annual economic forecast provides a three-to-sixmonth outlook for industry investment with data, including a summary of investment trends in key equipment markets, credit market conditions, the U.S. macroeconomic outlook, and key economic indicators. The report will be updated quarterly throughout 2012. “The Foundation is pleased to present a valuable and unique tool that distills economic data from a variety of sources into a brief analysis specific to the equipment

finance industry,” said Foundation Chairman Cameron W. Krueger, a director at Deloitte. “Our industry is a critical component of the American economy and this report forecasts continued growth.” “The new Equipment Leasing & Finance U.S. Economic Outlook complements the Foundation’s Monthly Confidence Index for the Equipment Finance Industry (MCI-EFI) and the Equipment Leasing and Finance Association’s Monthly Leasing and Finance Index (MLFI-25) in providing a full picture of industry and economic conditions affecting the $628 billion equipment finance industry from the historical, present, and future perspectives,” said William G. Sutton, CAE, president of the Foundation and president and CEO of the Equipment Leasing and Finance Association. Key findings include: • Overall, investment continues to be a bright spot in the U.S. economy. In particular, investment in equipment and software has grown steadily for eight straight quarters. Expectations for 2012 are that growth will moderate slightly, but remain positive overall. • Trends in equipment investment include: • Agriculture equipment investment is likely to decelerate slightly in the next 3 to 6

months. • Computers and software equipment investment will remain healthy, but is likely to slow down somewhat. • Construction equipment investment is likely to slow in the immediate near term, but could be buoyed by the energy and housing sectors later in 2012. • Industrial equipment investment will likely be hampered by macro-trends, which may cause some deceleration in growth from what appears to be a recent peak in the growth rate. • Medical equipment is on watch for a leveling-off in investment spending. Investment growth rates, while positive, have softened for six straight quarters and could bottom out in late 2012. Still, near-normal growth is anticipated in the next 3 to 6 months. • Transportation equipment investment should remain solidly positive, but is unlikely to maintain the rapid growth rates of 2011. • Credit market conditions are improving slowly as demand for financing grows and supply constraints gradually ease. However, the growth rate of investment in equipment and software is likely to remain moderate until demand puts more pressure on capacity. Based on an outlook for moderate eco-

nomic growth in 2012, and the overhang of excess industrial capacity, investment in equipment and software is expected to increase by 8 to 10 percent in 2012, compared to about 10.5 percent in 2011. • For the overall economy, recent revisions to U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) show that the 2008-09 recession was deeper and the recovery has been weaker than previously estimated. While investment has buoyed an otherwise weak economy, employment and consumer demand have been tepid. Significant headwinds in the form of persistently high oil prices, household deleveraging, weakened consumer confidence, and the Eurozone financial crisis have all combined to restrain growth prospects for 2012. • The macro outlook for 2012 is for a slow improvement, as impediments to growth are expected to gradually dissipate, with more positive cyclical trends kicking in later in the year. Compared to the consensus forecast of 2.0 percent growth for 2012, a slightly faster growth rate of 2.4 percent is predicted. This implies that the unemployment rate will remain at 8 percent or higher by the end of 2012. For more information, visit www.leasefoundation.org/IndRsrcs/EO/.

Corridor Project Will Help Give Boost to Shreveport BRIDGE from page 1

Long-Term Plans and Goals “This project has been a long time in planning,” confirmed Amber Herbert, public information officer of LA DOT. “Shreveport is an important link in the Louisiana transportation network … and nationally.” The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department first studied the possibility of a northern extension of I-49 in 1988 as part of a multi-state effort. The study was prepared in response to Section 166 of the 1987 Surface Transportation Act, with the purpose of examining the economic feasibility of constructing a highway to interstate standards between Shreveport and Kansas City, Mo. Results indicated that a highway would provide significant benefits to all three states. In the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991, Congress designated the extension of I-49 from Shreveport to Kansas City as High Priority Corridor 1. The ultimate goal is to develop a transcontinental corridor linking the Gulf Coast with the central United States and Canada in order to support international and domestic commerce and tourism. From Kansas City, I-29 completes the link to Canada, crossing the border just south of Winnipeg, Manitoba. “In addition to providing direct access to Arkansas, the I-49 corridor would link major transportation hubs in the metro area,” Herbert said, “such as a regional airport and two railroads. It also will improve efficiency for industries dependent upon trucking by facilitating the shipment of raw materials and finished products.” In fact, the principal purpose of the I-49 corridor is to improve system linkage and accessibility in support of international and domestic commerce and tourism, according to the Louisiana Department of Transportation (LA DOT). Currently, a gap exists in the north-south interstate network between I-35 and I-55 (a distance of approximately 400 mi. [644 km]). Development of this corridor will fill the gap and augment the interstate system serving the Midwest and other central states. For example, in Kansas City, I-49 would link with Interstates 29 and 70 and intersect with six east-west interstates (Interstates 10, 20, 30, 40, 44 and 70). Linkage with Interstates 80, 90 and 94 also would be made via I-29 and I-35 north of Kansas City. Rural communities in the corridor also will benefit through improved access to employment and services in the Shreveport metropolitan area, as well as decreased emergency response times. Furthermore, safety will be enhanced when traffic shifts from the existing two-lane and four-lane conventional highways to the new interstate. The crash rate on interstate highways in rural

Louisiana is about one-half that of two-lane facilities. In addition to expediting travel through linking major roadways, the I-49 extension will alleviate current and projected congestion on a number of existing highways in the corridor. The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LA DOTD) completed a detailed feasibility study for the 36-mi. (58 km) section from I220 to the Arkansas state line in 1995. This study included a comprehensive traffic analysis, an examination of existing environmental information and public information meetings. Analyses predict volumes of more than 37,000 vehicles per day just north of I220 to more than 10,700 vehicles per day at the state line in 2020, more than 60 percent of which consists of trucks. Because the new route will shift traffic, the LA DOT expects a reduction in the rate of deterioration of existing highways in the corridor. According to them, “the larger project, from Shreveport to Kansas City, yields a substantial decrease in vehicle-miles traveled for both autos and trucks. This reduction will have a positive impact on the rate of deterioration of highway infrastructure in the corridor region.”

Section E bridge work at a pond location

Development of this corridor is expected to yield national savings by 2030 of 1.7 billion auto miles traveled, nearly 250 million truck miles traveled, more than 26 million vehicle hours for autos and 5 million vehicle hours for trucks, due to reduced travel times and distances. By reducing vehicle miles traveled, the project will enable substantial fuel savings as well as reductions in air pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions. Dollars and Sense Another advantage of the project is an expected increase of 5,687 jobs, $596 million in gross state product and $1.26 billion in personal income by 2039. A recent analysis indicates that completing I-49 North from Shreveport to Kansas City will yield between $17 billion and $36 billion in benefits over a 20-year period. But, as the saying goes, it takes money to make money. The estimated cost to build I49 North is $622 million. “We have approximately $460 million in federal earmarks and state matching funds have been secured for I-49 North,” Herbert said. “That includes roughly $300 million in federal highway funds, with more than $47 million coming from ARRA formula funds,

along with $140 million in state funds.” The total unfunded amount necessary to complete the remaining two segments (segments J to K, those closest to Shreveport) of I-49 North is approximately $160 million. “The Governor promised funding for it in 2008,” Herbert stated. Gov. Jindal is reported to be considering a bonding initiative and 2012 capital outlay funding for the final two segments. J would be a complete bond, K would be partially bonded and use other funding. The governor announced in January that he, in conjunction with I-49 north Task Force officials, area legislators and local officials, is pursuing legislation to bond out $7.5 million in order to invest the estimated $60 million needed to fully construct segment J. Depending on conditions of the financial market, this bonding effort could generate $87 million — $27 million more than would be needed for Segment J, leaving additional funds for Segment K. In May, Gov. Jindal made another announcement that his 2012 capital outlay bill will include an additional $73 million to completely fund Segment K ($27 million in bonding surplus plus $73 million in capital see BRIDGE page 54

Despite Architectural Value, Gothic Bridge Fades in S.C. By Robert Behre THE POST AND COURIER OF CHARLESTON

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) The “Five Mile Viaduct” bridge has an aesthetic quality rarely seen in today’s more modern bridges. Built in 1926, its railings have small Gothic arches and are punctuated regularly by solid blocks that also serve as expansion joints. It’s located at the headwaters of Rivers Avenue and is perhaps the most concrete sign of where Charleston stops and North Charleston begins — though it doesn’t exactly mark the city limits of either. Some recall the bridge fondly because if crossed fast enough — a bit faster than the posted speed limit — one gets a brief sense of weightlessness. A 1995 historical survey of North Charleston concluded the bridge was eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. So then why is no one complaining about it being torn down? A big part of that answer is its location. The bridge crosses a railroad track, and the surrounding properties are mostly industrial. This isn’t a pretty part of town. And

“We want fairness, and we want access to Rivers Avenue just like we have right now. They’re going to change the whole dynamics of Rivers Avenue.” Teddie Pryor County Council Chairman

those residents who do live nearby have bigger challenges to face than a historic preservation fight. An even more important reason might be its structural condition. The bridge was deemed unable to handle vehicles of more than five tons before it recently was closed to traffic entirely. The only thing crossing it these days are two temporary utility lines. Also, the bridge is about 2 ft. (.6 m) too low to allow double-stacked trains to pass underneath. For those reasons, the S.C. Department of Transportation is planning to replace it. North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey

noted he went to high school just down the street from the bridge and part of him would like to see it saved. But he said not one resident has contacted him to protest its loss. “To me, it’s no different than the old Cooper River bridge,” Summey said. “It would be great [to save it], but does it make practical sense?” Richard Cleary, an associate professor at the University of Texas’ School of Architecture, wrote a book on the nation’s bridges and noted that there are so many, they’re easy to forget about. Case in point: As the nation’s preservation movement expanded between 1980 and 2000, more than half of its historic bridges

were torn down, according to Cleary’s “Bridges,” published in 2007. There’s no question the Five Mile Viaduct bridge needs a lot of help. Chunks have spalled off and fallen from its side, and weeds are encroaching on all sides. It is marked with old scars that need patching. Its bronze plaques are gone. There could be a good case made for saving it — if a rehabilitation could solve the necessary structural issues. County Council Chairman Teddie Pryor owns an old service station just north of the bridge and said many neighboring property owners are concerned about the size of its replacement and what sort of easement the state will need and how that will affect local traffic and property values. “We want fairness, and we want access to Rivers Avenue just like we have right now,” he said. “They’re going to change the whole dynamics of Rivers Avenue.” In other words, repairing rather than replacing the bridge could be the answer not only to some property owners’ concerns but also to those interested in seeing North Charleston save part of its heritage. Of course, if there are people interested in that, they’d better speak up.

Case Donates Skid Steer Cutaway to Northwest Iowa College Case Construction Equipment recently donated a cutaway training model of a Case skid steer loader to the heavy equipment operation and maintenance program at Northwest Iowa Community College in Sheldon, Iowa. Roger Solberg, heavy equipment operations and maintenance instructor at NWICC, said the program’s 25 students will begin using the machine during the upcoming semester’s studies, including breaking down, re-assembling and re-installing the engine. “We’ll have a new shop next year, and we’re setting up a special area just for the Case machine,” Solberg said. Case had been using the machine for training at its Tomahawk Customer Center in Tomahawk, Wis. Solberg arranged the donation during a three-day visit with his students to the Tomahawk facility earlier this year. “We appreciate the support Case provides to our program. We’re especially grateful to Russ Wadzinski, the general manager at Tomahawk, who offered us the skid steer cutaway. Russ and his team gave us good advice and ideas to incorporate into our facilities and classes. Case provides a great example to our students of how the industry

can help prepare the next generation of equipment operators and mechanics,” Solberg said. The Case skid steer is the latest addition to

the 30-piece equipment fleet used in the NWICC heavy equipment program. Solberg, who has directed the program for 12 years, said students learn to operate and

maintain construction, agricultural and onhighway equipment, and each graduate of the 18-month program also passes the commercial driver’s license test. “We have a strong record of placing our graduates with big contractors, dealerships and companies with large truck fleets,” Solberg said. “It’s one of the most comprehensive programs available, and we draw students from all over the country, not just Iowa.” Solberg, himself a graduate of the NICC heavy equipment program, also credited Dean Shaw of Titan Machinery, Sioux City, Iowa, for nurturing the relationship between NICC and Case. Titan is a Case dealer with locations in seven midwest and plains states. “We’re happy to do whatever we can to help the NICC program,” Shaw said. “Roger and his staff are helping keep the industry on track for the future.” Wadzinski also commented on the importance of supporting technical training programs such as NICC’s. “It’s important to help develop young mechanics and operators. The graduates of these programs may someday work for Case or our customers,” he said. For more information, call 866/54CASE6 or visit www.casece.com.

WICA Seeks Nominees for Woman of Distinction Award The Women in Concrete Alliance (WICA) — a networking organization for women in the concrete industry — has announced the call for entries for the second annual Woman of Distinction award. According to Kari Moosmann, co-founder of WICA, the award was created to celebrate women in the industry. “We are excited to see a woman in the industry honored by her peers, said Moosmann. “This award will reinforce that women are a valued resource in the concrete construction industry. WICA co-founder Kimberly Kayler noted that the recipient of the award will signify the spirit of the Women in Concrete Alliance. “WICA was formed to supply information, opportunities and mentoring to women working in the concrete construction industry, said Kayler. “There are many women that really make a difference for other women in the indus-

try, as well as make this is a better marketplace for us all. This award gives us a chance to celebrate those heroes. Rosa Olivia Becerra, owner/president of Cortamex, a diamond blade supplier in Tijuana, Mexico, was voted the winner of the first award for her dedication to her customers. “This is a touching and proud moment in my career, said Becerra, “The success I have had is founded on the beliefs that if you work hard and are passionate about what you do, you will be rewarded

regardless of gender. Combine this thinking with exceeding customer expectations and you have my formula for running my company. Becerra began her construction career as a bookkeeper for her brother’s concrete cutting company and eventually took over when he left. Her tireless devotion to her company and her clients make her a Woman of Distinction. When asked about her success in construction industry, Becerra responded, “Take the time to find out where your customer feels he or she needs improvement. Then

go out and find a way to help that situation. Resolve the issue one time and they will be happy. Do it a second time and they will be surprised. Do it a third time and you have a loyal customer. To submit a nomination for the Woman of Distinction Award, visit the News/Events page at www.womeninconcrete.org. The deadline for all nominations is Jan. 6, 2011. After the nominations are received, members of the industry will have the opportunity to vote on their choice at the Women in Concrete luncheon held Jan. 25 in

conjunction with the World of Concrete. To register for the luncheon, visit www.worldofconcrete.com. The winner will be announced in February 2012. The WICA was started by cofounders Moosmann, former managing editor of Concrete Construction magazine, and Kayler, president of Constructive Communication Inc. The idea for an ongoing network began with Hanley Wood’s Women in Concrete (WIC) event at World of Concrete. The spirit of Women in Concrete was kept alive through the year by profiles of readers that appeared in a regular column in The Concrete Producer and Concrete Construction magazines. Requests for a more continuous connection sparked the idea for the alliance. WICA strives to go beyond these initial efforts and reach women on a continuous basis to create an industry alliance that serves the needs of all women in concrete.

Breach Bypass…

Agencies Agree on Bridges for N.C. 12 By Martha Waggoner ASSOCIATED PRESS

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) A bridge that would rise above the Pamlico Sound and bypass two breaches on N.C. 12 on Hatteras Island caused by Hurricane Irene is among those now being considered as a long-term solution for access to the coastal highway. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service representatives proposed a bridge that would start north of a breach on Pea Island and reconnect with land at Rodanthe, the northernmost of the seven villages on Hatteras Island and the site of the second breach, the state Transportation Department said in a news release Dec. 15. The proposal came at a meeting of various state and federal agencies involved in finding a more permanent way to repair the road. Early estimates show the bridge would be 5 to 7 mi. (8 to 11 km) long, but it’s early in the process to be definitive, DOT spokeswoman Greer Beaty said. DOT is searching for long-term

solutions to breaches on the highway, which is the only link from the island farther north to the mainland. Hurricane Irene, which struck in late August, chewed through the island, which was closed for weeks because of the broken road. A temporary bridge was built over Pea Island breach, and the road reopened in October. The agencies rejected beach renourishment as a permanent repair at either breach, leaving individual bridges as the only other options being considered. The only other option for the Pea Island breach is a bridge where the road now stands. For the Rodanthe breach, the agencies agreed that DOT should either build a bridge within the easement or build one that extends into the Pamlico Sound. “There are laws and regulations associated with some of the options that we are not likely to be able to meet,” Jim Trogdon, DOT’s chief operating officer, said in the release. “By focusing our efforts on the most realistic options, we can more effi-

s

ciently develop long-term fixes for N.C. 12 that will provide a reliable way for people to get to jobs and education.” Warren Judge, chairman of the Dare County commissioners, said that he and other commissioners support beach renourishment as the best way to protect the highway. More important, he said, is just fixing the road. “We have stated our preference — beach renourishment. And not onetime beach renourishment. You build the beaches and you maintain them,” he said. “But regardless of what the answer is, we need a permanent, reliable, secure transportation link.” He said he was concerned that DOT would not have the money for the single bridge from Pea Island to Rodanthe. The agencies involved in the process still must sign a form officially agreeing to narrow the existing options and allow for the inclusion of any new options so the process can continue. The agencies expect that to happen within the coming weeks.

LaHood Announces Funding for 46 Transportation Projects PROJECTS from page 1

Terry Thomas (L), James River Equipment; and Richard McKeon (R), Construction Equipment Guide; present the $3,000 donation to Ed Boyce of the Charlotte Rescue Mission. The donation is from all of the construction equipment dealers in the Charlotte area.

woman’s life that has spiraled out of control, so that she can return as a contributing member of society.” For years, explained John Hood, AED member and used equipment manager at Carolina CAT, the organization used donations and contributions to finance social events, such as an annual golf tournament. However, because membership is down and the economy is bad, the money is no longer used to support events. In the past, AED contributed to a scholarship fund, but it was connected to the golf tournament. “We had a lot of money that we didn’t need,” Hood said. Terry Thomas, general manager of James River Equipment added, “We polled members about what to do with the unused funds. Everyone wanted to donate it to a local charity, so we appointed some guys to look for a local organization. We wanted a charity where a generous portion of the money would go to the people.” They chose the Charlotte Rescue Mission, which for 72 years, has been providing residential programs for homeless, jobless men and women with alcohol and drug addiction issues who have few other options due to a lack of health coverage. Professional recovery programs and other services are provided at no cost. In 1992, the Mission opened Dove’s Nest, a women’s recovery program. The 12-bed residential home in the heart of historic

Dilworth provides a structured living environment, with a dedicated staff aimed at helping women understand and deal with the core issues of addiction as a disease. After completing the 120-day intensive program focusing on spiritual, physical, social and psychological recovery, clients can seek additional assistance through an eight-month extension in the Mission’s continuing care division. There is a waiting list for entry into the Mission’s programs. In 2010, more than 450 men and women participated in recovery programs, 74 percent of whom were homeless. The average client has been in jail or prison two to three times and some of them suffer from malnutrition. More than 70 percent are dually diagnosed with addiction problems, as well as mental or emotional problems. Because of the demand, the Mission is expanding its Dove’s Nest from a 12-bed to a 45,000-sq.-ft., 120-bed facility capable of serving 90 women and 30 children. It is scheduled to open in the fall of 2012. The Mission has been trying to raise funds to meet that goal. AED’s gift will help. “It’s a good cause,” Hood said, “and a great time of year to donate to charity.” If AED has excess funds in the future, Hood said it “just makes sense” to donate it to another local charity. investments we need to create jobs, repair our nation’s transportation systems, better serve the traveling public and our nation’s businesses, factories and farms, and make sure our economy continues to grow." In November, President Obama directed DOT to take common sense steps to expedite transportation projects by accelerating the process for review and approval and by leveraging private sector funding to promote growth and job creation. As part of that initiative, DOT accelerated the TIGER III application review process and has announced the awards before the end of 2011 — months ahead of the planned spring 2012 announcement. The grants will fund a wide range of innovative transportation projects in urban and rural areas across the country: • Of the $511 million in TIGER III funds available for grants, more than $150 million will go to critical projects in rural areas. • Roughly 48 percent of the funding will go to road and bridge projects, including more than $64 million for Complete Streets projects that will spur small business growth and benefit motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians. • 29 percent of the funding will support transit projects like the Westside Multimodal Transit Center in San Antonio. • 12 percent will help build port projects like the Port of New Orleans Rail Yard Improvements. • 10 percent will go to freight rail projects like the Muldraugh Bridge Replacement in Kentucky. • Three grants also were directed to tribal governments to create jobs and address critical transportation needs in Indian country. • Three grants will provide better multimodal access to airports, including DFW in Texas. Work has already begun on 33 planning projects while 58 capital projects are under way across the country from the previous two rounds of TIGER, and an additional 13 projects are expected to break ground over the next six months. In 2009 and 2010, the department received a total of 2,400 applications requesting $76 billion, greatly exceeding the

$2.1 billion available in the TIGER I and TIGER II grant programs. In the previous two rounds, the TIGER program awarded grants to 126 freight, highway, transit, port and bicycle/pedestrian projects in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. TIGER grants are awarded to transportation projects that have a significant national or regional impact. Projects are chosen for their ability to contribute to the long-term economic competitiveness of the nation, improve the condition of existing transportation facilities and systems, increase energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improve the safety of U.S. transportation facilities and enhance the quality of living and working environments of communities through increased transportation choices and connections. The department

also gives priority to projects that are expected to create and preserve jobs quickly and stimulate increases in economic activity. The continuing demand for TIGER grants highlights the need for further investment in the nation’s transportation infrastructure that could be provided by President Obama’s American Jobs Act. The American Jobs Act would provide $50 billion to improve 150,000 mi. of road, replace 4,000 mi. of track, and restore 150 mi. of runways, creating jobs for American workers and building a safer, more efficient transportation network. It also would provide $10 billion for the creation of a bipartisan National Infrastructure bank.

Toro Extends Walk-Behind Trencher Line With New TRX-26 Toro is extending its line of dedicated walk-behind trenchers with the introduction of the Toro TRX-26. Boasting a 26-hp (19.4 kW) Kawasaki engine, the TRX-26 is ideal for utility workers, irrigation contractors and plumbers looking for the power of a ride-on trencher, with the maneuverability and control of a walk-behind. “Based on feedback we received from contractors, we found there was a growing demand for a larger, more powerful walkbehind trencher, said Greg Lawrence, product marketing manager of Toro. “To fill the gap between ride-ons and smaller walkbehinds, Toro designed the TRX-26 to be powerful, yet easy to use. With many of the same features as the Toro TRX-15 and TRX-19 models, the TRX-26 makes trenching more efficient without putting any extra strain on the operator, according to the manufacturer. The Toro Dingo TX-style control system on the TRX-26 makes it easy to control and eliminates the “jerk steering required with handlebar control steering, allowing for smoother, more precise trenching. Three simple controls operate all traction and

trenching functions, making the TRX-26 much easier to use and learn than other trenchers. And with its zero-turn capability and ground pressure as low as 4.1 psi, the TRX-26 has the ability to access confined

spaces without damaging existing turf. The low-profile tracked design of the TRX-26 provides a low center of gravity and a large footprint for increased stability and added traction on hills and uneven terrain.

The tracked design also gives the TRX-26 cross-trenching capabilities. “Tracks help the operator maneuver over perpendicular trenches effortlessly, where wheeled units may get stuck in the existing trench. It’s rare that someone will only need to trench in straight lines, so the ability to cross-trench is important, said Lawrence. The TRX-26 can be outfitted with Toro’s 2-, 3- or 4-ft. (.6, .9 or 1.2 m) boom attachments, allowing it to trench up to 8-in. (20 cm) wide and up to 48-in. (122 cm) deep. With multiple boom options, contractors can choose the right size boom for their specific job, whether that’s the 4-ft. boom for installing utility lines or the 2-ft. boom for irrigation or drain tile applications. Other available options for the TRX-26 include soil chain, combo chain, crumber and backfill blade attachments. “No matter what type of trenching job a contractor is working on, they’re going to be impressed by the performance of the TRX26, said Lawrence. Zahn Trencher Now Offers Heavy-Duty Track Option The Ditch Witch organization now offers a heavy-duty track option with two of its Zahn compact trenchers: the two-wheeldrive R230 and R300.

Until now, each Zahn unit has offered standard air-filled or optional urethanefilled, flat-proof tires for enhanced traction. By equipping their Zahn R230 or R300 with

these new heavy-duty tracks, customers can increase their machines’ traction, especially on uneven and rough terrain, according to the manufacturer.

With heavy-duty tracks, the Zahn can travel across trenches, an advantage when installing irrigation systems. These heavyduty tracks “walk” or oscillate 12 degrees, which helps provide greater traction when loading, unloading, and maneuvering over curbs or other rough and uneven terrain. Another benefit of these tracks is their high-flotation design, which helps minimize surface damage to turf and enables the operator to work on and around sensitive landscapes and established lawns. Tracks do not increase the width of the R230 and R300, so each machine can still fit comfortably through a standard 36 in. (0.9 m) yard gate. Each Zahn power unit includes the engine, operator’s console and articulation joint. The two-wheel-drive R230 and R300 models accept two types of trencher front ends. Optional heavy-duty tracks are available with all other Zahn models, including the four-wheel-drive R230 and R300, both of which accept seven different types of front ends. For more information, call 800/654Tracks do not increase the width of the R230 and R300, so each machine can still fit comfortably through a standard 36 in. Takeout can eat up your savings. Dynapac’s PL500T and PL500TD, a new generation of 20-in. (51 cm) compact cold planers are available as three- or four-wheeled units.

Dynapac’s PL500T and PL500TD, a new generation of 20-in. (51 cm) compact cold planers are available as three- or fourwheeled units. Increased engine power ensures improved performance and a maximum cutting depth of 6.3 in. (16 cm) for the PL500T and 7.9 in. (20 cm) for the PL500TD. Each model is powered by a step-3 compliant Cummins QSB 4.5 C110/C130 diesel engine. Engine ratings of 110 hp (82 kW) 112 PS at 2200 rpm for the PL500T, and 130 hp (97 kW) 132 PS for the PL500TD offer an increased output compared to similar sized competitive models, according to the manufacturer. Special drums for demarcation work and fine spaced cutting drums are easy and quick to change. Smaller drums with an adapted scraper blade and a side cutting wheel are available as options on both models. Dynapac’s hydraulically operated front sealing of the cutter housing, adapted to the shape of the cutting drum, minimizes the accumulation of the milled material. This reduces labor time at the end of the cutting

track. Also available as an option on both models is Dynapac’s parallelogram front axle. This design offers increased traction, reduced wear and tear, and improved wheel control in case of a height difference for the front wheels, according to the manufacturer. Considerable attention has been paid to the ergonomic design of the planers. Vibration has been minimized on the operator’s platform. The controls and instrumentation have been positioned to face toward the operator for ease of operation and all-around visibility, particularly of the cutting areas. As an option, the PL500T and PL500TD can be fitted with a 39.5-in. (100 cm) conveyor for loading a wheel loader bucket, or with an 18-ft. (5.5 m) conveyor for loading trucks. Additional options such as a weatherproof canopy, a hydraulically foldable right rear wheel, or the Dynapac electronic leveling system optimize the new planer for the job site.

Pack your own lunch instead of going out. $6 saved a day x 5 days a week x 10 years x 6% interest = $19,592. That could be money in your pocket. Small changes today. Big bucks tomorrow. Go to feedthepig.org for free savings tips.

La. Contractors Ready to Take on 11 Project Segments BRIDGE from page 24

outlay), which would cover the $100 million estimated cost of the final section. Progress Report All of the land except for the two segments closest to Shreveport has been purchased, Louisiana Transportation Secretary Sherri LeBas told The Times. For all but those two segments, the utility relocation and “clearing and grubbing” has been done, Herbert reported. Three contracts for clearing and embankment totaling $19.3 million have been completed on I-49 North from the Arkansas line to Mira-Myrtis Road (segments A and B). However, she added, not all segments completed a clearing and embankment contract prior to road construction. “With most segments, clearing and embankment work was included in the same paving contract.” Eight of the nine funded segments have paving projects underway, to the tune of $259.7 million.

Segments A (from LA 168 to the Arkansas line) and C (from LA 2 to Mira-Myrtis Road) are substantially complete, pending landscaping. Segment A, began in February 2009, cost $20.9 million and includes paving and building bridges. Segment C, began in August 2008, involved clearing, paving and building bridges, at a cost of $19.4 million. Segment B (Mira-Myrtis Road to LA 168) began in May 2009 and is scheduled to be complete in summer 2011. This project is being entirely paid for by federal stimulus funds. Segment D (from U.S. 71S to LA 2) began in November 2009 and is scheduled to be complete in early 2012. It includes clearing, paving and building bridges, at a cost of $41.6 million. Similarly, contracts to clear, pave and build bridges from LA 170 to U.S. 71S (segment E) for $38.9 million, to clear and pave from LA 173 to LA 169 (segment H) for $10.1 million and to clear, pave and build bridges from LA 1 to LA 173 (segment I)

for $60.7 million began in 2010, with E scheduled to continue until 2013, H expected to complete this winter and I expected to finish in spring 2013. Segment G from LA 169 to LA 530 was awarded on Dec. 10, 2010 for $36.4 million and also includes clearing, paving and building bridges. Work began in March 2011 and should be complete in spring 2013. A $25.7 million project to clear, pave and build bridges

from LA 530 to LA 170 (segment F) was let on December 15, 2010. Work began in May 2011 and is expected to continue until spring 2013. Construction is expected to begin on Segment J in summer 2012 and segment K as early as summer 2013, with final completion of I-49 North as early as 2016. The LA DOTD is using the traditional design-bid-build method to complete the remaining seg-

ments of the project. However, cost-plus-time (A+B) bidding procedures with contract time on a calendar day basis will be used and incentives for early completion will be included. The design-build method was considered but rejected as right-of-way acquisition is the key activity in the critical path. Contracts for the 11 segments have been awarded to different contractors, although James Construction is working on four of them, Herbert noted. The various sections are at different stages of construction. While bulldozers are clearing trees to make way for pavement and embanking in one segment, workers may be rerouting underground utilities in another and crews could be renovating pasture land with soil cement to prepare a foundation for pavement in yet another area. GDOT Scraps Cobb, Cherokee Optional Toll Lanes Project ATLANTA (AP) The state Department of Transportation’s board has withdrawn a plan to add optional toll lanes alongside interstate highways in Cobb and Cherokee counties north of Atlanta. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported board member Brandon Beach said Dec. 14 the department would look at other methods for building the billion-dollar project. The project would have built two reversible toll lanes alongside Interstate Highway 75 from I-285 to I-575 and one reversible toll lane each along I-75 up to Hickory Grove Road and along I-575 up to Sixes Road. The toll price was to fluctuate with congestion in the main lanes to keep the toll lane free-flowing. Unlike the HOT lane on I-85, it was to be financed and built by private companies, who would be repaid by toll revenues.

New Holland Launches Six Updated Loader Backhoes New Holland Construction has upgraded six B Series loader backhoes — B90B, B95B, B95B TC, B95B LR, B110B and B115B. The new machines offer more options to meet customers’ needs and feature 4.5-L, turbocharged engines, ranging from 95 hp (71 kW) to 108 hp (81 kW). “New Holland B Series loader backhoes continue the New Holland legacy of superior power, performance and serviceability,” said Dave December, marketing manager of New Holland Construction. “With a choice of six distinct loader backhoe models — and a variety of Four New Holland B Series models, including the new features — these machines deliver the B110B shown here, feature two transmission options power and torque needed to get any digging, New Holland Construction upgraded six B Series loader back- — a powershuttle or powershift. Powershuttle offers four forward and reverse gears; the powershift offers loading, trenching or pushing job done faster.” hoes, including the B95B, shown here. four forward and three reverse gears, as well as a kick-down feature.

Lifting Performance “New Holland B Series loader backhoes out-lift other machines throughout the range of the digging cycle,” December said. “Superior lifting performance and improved breakout force also increase productivity.” He added that the dump reach enables operators to dump material into the center of the truck for faster loading and increased payloads. With loader breakout forces ranging from 12,169 to 15,212 lbs. (5,520 to 6,900 kg), New Holland B Series loader backhoes also excel in tough digging conditions, making these machines ideal for grading and land clearing applications, according to the manufacturer. Ease of Service The ease of serviceability on the New Holland B Series loader backhoes provides maximum uptime and profit. The flip-up hood is easy to open, and provides wide access with low effort for routine maintenance needs. Outboard maintenance-free, self-adjusting hydraulicallyapplied spring-released (HASR) service brakes provide increased performance and allow for brake cooling. Separate spring-applied hydraulically-released (SAHR) park brakes are applied with the press of a switch for greater performance and control. New Transmission Options Two transmission options — a powershuttle or powershift — are available on the B95B, B95B LR, B95B TC and B110B models to match the operator’s needs. The powershuttle option — which offers four forward and reverse gears — is available on the B90B. The powershift option — which offers four forward and three reverse gears, as well as a kickdown feature — is available on the B115B. The powershuttle transmission, which retains the use of the right-hand shifter, uses synchronizers for on-the-go shifting between all four gear speeds. With the powershift transmission, the gear shifting is done with hydraulic clutches. Using powershift, the operator can select either automatic or manual gear shifting modes. Auto mode provides automatic transmission shifting, similar to wheel loaders. The gear shift points are based on vehicle ground speed. Manual mode gives the operator full control of the transmission gear, independent of vehicle speed. The Powershift transmission also features a forward/reverse modulation with three selectable modes: firm, smooth and normal.

The New Holland B Series loader backhoes include the B95B TC (tool carrier) model, which delivers true selfleveling both up and down. The B95B TC, shown here, is practical for material handling use.

Improved Cab Comfort and Visibility “We’ve added new comfort and visibility features to the New Holland B Series loader backhoes to boost job site productivity,” December said. “A six-post cab and floor-to-ceiling windows provide some of the best visibility in the industry.” The rear window on the new cab features overhead sliding glass, with a slight overhang to protect against the elements. “Operators prefer different controls, which is why we continue to offer pilot and two-lever controls on the New Holland B Series loader backhoes,” December said. “The pilot control option, which is growing in popularity, provides infinite forward and reverse movement, and operators will appreciate the adjustable ergonomic wrist rests.” Long Reach, Tool Carrier Models The B Series loader backhoes include the B95B LR (long reach) and B95B TC (tool carrier) models. The B95B LR combines the compact size of the B95B base unit with the longer stick of the B110B and provides enhanced dig depth, reach and fuel consumption. The B95B TC delivers true selfleveling both up and down, making it ideal for material handling use. Curved-Boom Design The curved-boom design of the New Holland B Series loader backhoes decreases transport height while increasing digging power. The new machines maintain the narrow

boom design for visibility into the trench and spoil pile. Wedge-style buckets reduce heel drag, allowing the operator to effectively undercut when needed. Variable Volume Hydraulic System New Holland B Series loader backhoe models featuring pilot backhoe controls deliver greater fuel efficiency — an increase of up to 10 percent — and improved cycle times through the variable volume hydraulic system, according to the manufacturer. This system operates at a lower temperature than other hydraulic systems. B Series models featuring mechanical backhoe controls continue to feature a single gear pump open hydraulic system. “The variable volume pump feature means lower fuel consumption each day, faster operating times and more productivity at lower costs,” December said. Attachments Provide Versatility, Value A full range of attachments for the B Series loader backhoes is available from New Holland Construction, including augers, booms, forks, hydraulic hammers and rakes. An optional auxiliary hydraulic circuit can be used with a mechanical quick-attach system or an electro-hydraulic quick coupler for fast and easy hookup to many attachments. Metro Areas Lose Construction Jobs in October 2011, Largest Loss in Atlanta Construction employment declined in 146 out of 337 metropolitan areas between October 2010 and October 2011, increased in 140 and stayed level in 51, according to a new analysis of federal employment data released Dec. 5 by the Associated General Contractors of America. Association officials noted that many communities continue to lose construction jobs even as a federal program to invest in highway, transit and other infrastructure construction has been stalled in Congress for years. “Declining federal investments in infrastructure projects, including highway and transit work, are making matters worse for construction employment in many communities,” said Ken Simonson, the association’s chief economist. “If it wasn’t for a slight increase in private sector demand, construction employment would be down in even more communities.” The largest job losses were in Atlanta-Sandy SpringsMarietta, Ga. (minus 7,700 jobs, minus 8 percent), followed by Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, Fla. (minus 4,000 jobs, minus 8 percent); New York City (minus 4,000 jobs, minus 4 percent); Philadelphia (minus 3,600 jobs, minus 5 percent) and the Dallas-Plano-Irving, Texas area (minus 3,600 jobs, minus 3 percent). Logan, Utah (minus 24 percent, minus 800 jobs) lost the highest percentage. Other areas experiencing large percentage declines in construction employment included Wilmington, N.C. (minus 21 percent, minus 1,900

jobs); Redding, Calif. (minus 20 percent, minus 600 jobs) and Montgomery, Ala. (minus 19 percent, minus 1,300 jobs). Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown, Texas, added more construction jobs (5,100 jobs, 3 percent) than any other metro area during the past year while Lake County-Kenosha County, Ill.-Wis., added the highest percentage (28 percent, 3,500 jobs). Other areas adding a large number of jobs included Columbus, Ohio (4,200 jobs, 15 percent); BuffaloNiagara Falls, N.Y. (3,600 jobs, 18 percent); Newark-Union, N.J.-Penn. (3,100 jobs, 9 percent) and San Jose-SunnyvaleSanta Clara, Calif. (3,000 jobs, 9 percent). Association officials noted that investments in infrastructure, including highway and transit construction, are suffering because Congress is years late in passing a new surface transportation, aviation and water infrastructure bills. They said without that legislation, state and local officials were having a hard time planning and funding large infrastructure projects. “Letting infrastructure programs languish at a time like this is the equivalent of fighting the economic downturn with one hand tied behind our back,” said the association’s chief executive officer, Stephen E. Sandherr. “Investing in infrastructure won’t solve every problem facing the construction industry but it will create construction jobs while giving a needed boost to all types of businesses.”

WE COVERED YOUR REAR, BUT WE DIDN’T STOP THERE. Primed for productivity – and protected from back to front, M-Series loaders from Bobcat stand up to difficult jobs. For starters, the rear bumper protects the tailgate from obstacles on the jobsite. Recessed rear lighting minimizes damage to tail lights. Protected quick couplers, mounted directly into the front plate of the lift arm, have no exposed hoses to damage. A guard that extends beyond the couplers offers even more protection. The removable hose guide makes it simple to correctly route hydraulic hoses, minimizing attachment wear and tear. Keep it free from damage and making money. There’s only one manufacturer with standards as high as yours.

Georgia Town Welcomes New Hyundai HQ With Open Arms HYUNDAI from page 14

Representatives of Chappell Tractor made the trek from Milford, N.H., to the Atlanta area for the Hyundai grand opening. (L-R): Flip Henry, Mike Beaulieu and Scott Grivois.

Iowa-based Hyundai dealer representatives who made the trek to Atlanta to attend the grand opening event (L-R) included Ken Petersen, Alex Rueter, Todd Rueter and Keith Petersen of Rueter’s.

Scott Rooney (second from R) of Chappell Tractor, Milford, N.H., catches up with some of his southeast region Hyundai dealer friends, (L-R) including Bill Abraham, Nasser Heavy Equipment, Lawrenceville, Ga.; Grady Harrington, Rob’s Hydraulics Inc., Grimesland, N.C.; Todd Milford, Nasser Heavy Equipment; Rob Lynch and Jim Wood, Rob’s Hydraulics, Inc.; Rooney; and Jason Wainwright, Rob’s Hydraulics Inc.

Charlotte Nash said, “Hyundai Construction Equipment Americas Inc. has a global reputation for innovation and quality that precedes them. Our strong pro-business community is equipped to provide them with the support that will be necessary for their continued growth and success. We are pleased to welcome them, and honored that they selected us for this major relocation of their headquarters facilities.” “HCEA chose to relocate their Americas headquarters from its previous facilities in Elk Grove Village, Illinois, largely because of the area’s resources, tax incentives, educated workforce, and overall business environment,” said Kirk Gillette, vice president of HCEA. “Norcross is honored to celebrate the relocation of Hyundai Construction Equipment Americas Headquarters to our community. Their choice to move to Gwinnett and Norcross is another example of the types of high-caliber of companies choosing to relocate their extensive operations here … to a community with an advanced infrastructure to allow for continued growth in the future,” said Norcross Mayor Bucky Johnson. Gwinnett Chamber Economic Development continually works to cultivate the pro-business community for which Gwinnett County is well known. The organization’s relocation and expansion efforts assist companies looking to move and grow in a strategically located, amenity-rich environment. “Hyundai Construction Equipment’s relocation of its Americas headquarters to Gwinnett adds tremendously to the growing number of headquarters doing business and growing in Gwinnett County,” said Nick Masino, vice president of economic development and partnership Gwinnett at the Gwinnett Chamber. “Gwinnett’s location, educated workforce, variety of resources and excellent quality of life are able to attract large international companies like HCEA

with the connectivity that they need to the southeast, the nation, and the world.” Georgia Department of Economic Development statewide project manager Yoonie Kim assisted HCEA with this project, in collaboration with Gwinnett Chamber Economic Development. HCEA was represented in this transaction by Adam Richards of Resource Real Estate Partners. The seller was represented by Colliers International. HCEA operates under its parent company, South Korea-based Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd. The company was formed in 1991 to focus on the needs of Hyundai’s construction equipment market. HCE offers 17 models of crawler excavators, four models of wheeled excavators, six models of mini-excavators, six models of wheel loaders, three models of skid steer loaders, and 117 models of forklift trucks. HCE is dedicated to the construction equipment market and continues to invest heavily in research and development in this area. HCE currently operates a production facility in Ulasan, Korea, and expects this new location to make its markets in the Americas more accessible. For more information, visit www.hceamericas.com.

ore than 1,600 bidders participated online or in person at Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers’ multi-million dollar unreserved public equipment auction in Atlanta on Dec. 7. Bidders came from 45-plus countries, including 47 U.S. states. More than 80 percent of the equipment and trucks was sold to buyers outside the state, from as far away as Fiji, Ghana, Japan, Sweden and the United Arab Emirates.
