engineer Brandon Smithey told Construction Equipment Guide. “It’s a very busy roadway, with an ever-growing population. It’s mostly for people coming into the city and surroundings for work. The traffic volumes increase significantly during the university’s academic year, particularly during major sporting events, when large numbers of visitors travel to the area. see OXFORD page 40

Scott Powerline Puts First Tadano GTC-600-2 in Field
Tadano photo
The GTC-600-2 boasts a 113.8-ft. full power boom, OPTI-WIDTH and lifting capacities up to 4 degrees out of level with full pick and carry.
Scott Powerline and Utility Equipment has been the first to introduce several new Tadano teleboom crawlers over the years. And that productive partnership continued earlier this year with the 60-ton GTC600-2 performing well on its debut job in Mississippi. Chain Electric Company had an important project with 8 mi. of new power construction (230 kV electric transmission line towers) preparing for a data center just outside Meridian. After talking to Scott Powerline, they knew that had the right machine for the job. Riley Beck, area supervisor of Chain Electric, shares his enthusiasm for the GTC600-2. “Scott Powerline called us about the 6002 and said it was available, and it was really just what we need for this project. We’re glad we got the opportunity to use it first because it can set the poles and hang the arm and do everything we need with one crane. We don’t have to have extra equipment to set these 230 (Kv) structures. Plus, we do a lot of traveling and the GTC-600-2 is a lowweight crane. The only 60-ton teleboom crawler that I know of that can move on one haul truck, so we don’t have to break down into pieces.” The GTC-600-2 has the same valuable
features as its 55-ton predecessor — jib capacities to 2.5 degrees out of level; dual hook operation with auxiliary nose sheave or jib; powerful winches with 16 mm rope; remote control for all rigging operations standard; best in class gradeability at 85 percent; and it also boasts an improved swing system. Additionally, the GTC-600-2 utilizes the full capabilities of the Tadano AML-C Rated Capacity Indicator and has operating load charts for 0.5 degrees, 1.5 degrees, 2.5 degrees and 4 degrees slopes with automatic out of level load chart switching based on the cranes position on the job site. Jay Lee, Scott Powerline account manager, appreciates the reliability of Tadano cranes. “Our relationship with Tadano started a long time ago, and we’ve stayed with the GTC series and it’s been a wonderful series for our customers. The GTC 600-2 is a great crane and really easy to move, which makes for a really good product in the powerline industry. That’s why we bought four of them. Also, the support system is really good. As far as service and parts, Tadano is always one phone call away when we need them. They have a team of people that know the cranes, our technicians and our needs.”
Garrett Taylor, general foreman and certified CCO crane operator of Chain Electric, was very pleased with the functionality of the crane. “The GTC-600-2 can go anywhere — from setting poles, hanging cross arms, making wire picks. It has a lot of high clearance for the muddy terrain we’re in. It can go through any hills and hollers we encounter. It’s got extendable tracks to make it more versatile. And just the comfort, the options and the tilt deck cab; they just make the operator very comfortable where you can do a safe and efficient job.” The GTC-600-2 boasts a 113.8-ft. full power boom, OPTI-WIDTH and lifting capacities up to 4 degrees out of level with full pick and carry. The new closed-loop hydrostatic system provides operators with smooth and precise control. It is also possible for the operator to set work zone limits for swing angle, height, and radius, and the crane has functional soft stops as operation approaches these pre-set limits. This functionality, along with being a onetruck crane, will make this Tadano a popular choice in the Scott Powerline fleet for years to come. Projects compete in four categories — Quality of Life/Community Development; Operations Excellence; Best Use of Technology & Innovation; and Safety — showcasing the essential role transportation plays in improving mobility, safety and quality of life for all users. “For almost two decades, the America’s Transportation Awards has highlighted the innovative work state DOTs do to improve communities and enhance the lives of the people who live and visit them. But the truth is, these projects are just a fraction of the incredible work done by state DOTs every year,” said Jim Tymon, executive director of AASHTO, in a statement. “AASHTO is proud to recognize the diverse and forward-thinking projects that are improving safety, mobility and quality of life in communities across the country. “As we look forward to the passage of a federal surface transportation reauthorization bill, this year’s winners underscore the importance of sustained federal investment in transportation and demonstrate how those resources are delivering meaningful benefits to residents, businesses, and travelers nationwide.” All nominated projects first compete at the regional level against projects of their own size: “Small” (projects costing up to $10 million), “Medium” (projects costing between $10 million and $100 million), and “Large” (projects costing more than $100 million). This year’s winning SASHTO regional projects are: • West Virginia Department of Transportation’s Snowshoe Resort Air Service Advanced Mobility Project (Quality of Life/Community Development, Small Project) • North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Mobility for Everyone, Everywhere in N.C. (Quality of Life/
Community Development, Medium Project) •VirginiaDepartmentofTransportation’s I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) Project (Quality of Life/ Community Development, Large Project) • North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Statewide Traffic Management Center Interoperability Initiative (Operations Excellence, Small Project) • Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development’s LA 47 Intracoastal Waterway Gulf Outlet Bridge Rehabilitation (Operations Excellence, Medium Project) • Florida Department of Transportation’s I-275 (Howard Frankland Bridge) Project (Operations Excellence, Large Project) • Georgia Department of Transportation’s Day One Deployment District (Best Use of Technology & Innovation, Small Project) • Tennessee Department of Transportation’s State Route 107/Sgt. Elbert Kinser Bridge Replacement (Best Use of Technology & Innovation, Medium Project) • Alabama Department of Transportation’s Blount County Triple Roundabout (Safety, Small Project) • Georgia Department of Transportation’s Old National Highway Safety Improvements (Safety, Small Project) • North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Investing in Safety: North Carolina’s Spot Safety Program (Safety, Medium Project) • South Carolina Department of Transportation’s Berlin G. Myers Parkway (Safety, Large Project) The SASHTO awards mark the final regional competition of the summer. Now that all regional winners have been announced, the top three scoring winners from each region will advance to the Top 12 round, with those final 12 contenders to be unveiled in early September. Those standout projects will then compete for two national honors in the 2026 America’s Transportation Awards: The Grand Prize, chosen by an independent panel of transportation industry judges, and the People’s Choice Award, decided through online public voting. AASHTO will reveal both winners at its annual meeting in Louisville, Ky., November 2026, with both award winners each receiving $10,000 to donate to a scholarship fund or charitable cause of their choice. Abernethy Relies On John Deere, Strong Dealer Partnership
Abernethy Contracting of Charlotte, N.C., is working in Huntersville, N.C., where crews are transforming 70 acres of raw land into a commercial development featuring two tilt-up buildings totaling nearly 10 acres under roof. Serving as the site contractor on the Axial Commerce project for general contractor Evans General Contractors, Abernethy Contracting is responsible for every phase of site development, including grading, underground utilities, curb and gutter, sidewalks, paving and construction of six stormwater ponds. The turnkey contract showcases the company’s ability to manage every aspect of complex site preparation while maintaining an aggressive construction schedule. Work began in March 2026 and is scheduled for completion in March 2027. By securing the grading permit ahead of schedule, crews were able to begin earthmoving early, helping offset weather-related challenges and keeping the project on track.

CEG SENIOR EDITOR
Scope of Work Is Substantial. Crews will move nearly 350,000 cu. yds. of material across the site while installing several miles of storm drainage and underground utilities, including a private lift station. The project also includes approximately 19,000 lin. ft. of curb and gutter; 22,500 sq. ft. of sidewalk; roughly 32,000 sq. yds. of asphalt; and more than 40,000 tons of stone. Approximately one-third of the grading work has been completed. Fifteen employees are dedicated to grading operations while another 10 are installing underground utilities, with that workforce expected to grow as utility work intensifies. One of the project’s biggest early challenges involved establishing erosion control while excavating steep drainage areas containing poor soils. Crews also experienced a tremendous amount of weathered rock that was difficult to excavate and hard blue rock which required blasting. Despite the project’s size, Abernethy Contracting has worked to minimize impacts on neighboring businesses and motorists.

When complete, the development is expected to create new commercial opportunities while supporting continued economic growth and future job creation in the Huntersville area. Large Fleet for Large Project Equipment has played a critical role in maintaining production on the massive earthmoving operation. Much of the fleet was supplied by James River Equipment, Abernethy Contracting’s local John Deere dealer. Equipment on the project includes a new John Deere

The John Deere 670 P-Tier hydraulic excavator has become one of the project’s most valuable production machines. Weighing approximately 154,000 lbs. and powered by a 462-hp John Deere Power Systems engine, the production-class excavator is designed for high-volume earthmoving and demanding rock excavation.
As grading progresses and underground utilities continue expanding across the site, Abernethy Contracting expects the project to be complete early 2027.

The machine features three power modes, a high-capacity hydraulic system and enhanced digging forces that allow operators to maximize productivity while maintaining fuel efficiency. Depending on bucket configuration, it can be equipped with buckets exceeding 9 cu. yds., making it well suited for mass excavation applications like the Axial Commerce project. On the Huntersville job, the 670 P-Tier has been excavating weathered rock, constructing stormwater ponds and moving large volumes of material across the site. Its size and digging power have enabled crews to excavate significantly more rock mechanically rather than relying on additional blasting. In harder ground conditions where smaller excavators would struggle to maintain production, the larger machine has helped Abernethy Contracting save both time and operating costs while keeping work moving. Company leadership was evaluating a significant fleet investment but, rather than making the decision from a conference room, they turned to the people responsible for delivering the work every day. “We asked a simple question: ‘What do you need to be successful on this project?’” said Kevin Hyatt, CFO of Abernethy Contracting. The answer was John Deere. Partnership Relies On Trust, Support Based on that feedback, Abernethy Contracting invested in a dedicated John Deere fleet supported by James River Equipment. Today, those machines are helping crews meet key production goals while maintaining the schedule on the

70-acre development. What stood out wasn’t the equipment itself. It was that leadership trusted the recommendation, backed the people closest to the work and followed through with the investment. According to Abernethy Contracting, dependable dealer support has been just as important as the equipment itself. The company worked closely with James River Equipment’s Jesse King, territory manager, and Kyle Cohoon, general manager, to assemble the equipment package needed for the project. As project requirements evolved throughout construction, the dealer consistently adapted equipment deliveries to meet changing jobsite demands. “The Axial Commerce project is more than just another project,” said Kurt Abernethy, vice president of team development. “We are working for a very large general contractor that has a proven history of expectations on delivery, performance and safety. The needs for this project have been fluid to the point where many times what we asked for was no longer needed. Not once did we hear or see James River complain about the changing equipment environment. They simply delivered.” That partnership extends well beyond equipment sales. “We spent more time together in the beginning talking about life, family and hobbies than we did about equipment needs,” said Hyatt. “This pattern has continued since then and we continue to cultivate the relationship not just with equipment needs but also from a personal relationship capacity.” Long-term support has always been the dealership’s priority.
“We’re celebrating our 100th anniversary this year, so we’ve been around since 1926,” Cohoon said. We’re not looking to just drop some equipment and move on. It’s all about support. When these guys go down, we go down. Partnership goes a long way.” Cohoon added that supporting customers means making sure operators have the tools they need to succeed every day. “Support comes not only from the dealership but also from the guys in the field putting hours in the seat every day,” he said. “We want to make sure they’ve got what they need to be successful.” Because Abernethy Contracting experienced excellent uptime with John Deere equipment on a previous project, choosing the fleet for the Axial Commerce project was a natural progression. “This team had a really good experience with John Deere equipment on the previous project,” said Abernethy. “Across all the brands, that was their favorite because it seemed to have the most uptime. So, when we approached the team, we asked, ‘What do you want? What do you need to be successful on the job?’ They wanted a John Deere package.” As grading progresses and underground utilities continue expanding across the site, Abernethy Contracting expects its combination of experienced crews, high-production John Deere equipment and responsive dealer support to keep the project on schedule for completion in early 2027. With the launch of its next generation 524 P-Tier, 544 P-Tier and 624 P-Tier wheel loaders, John Deere is delivering smart solutions that help boost productivity and support operator confidence on the job site. Built on the foundation of the current P-Tier lineup, these updated models are loaded with technology and job readiness features that empower contractors to do more with less, support safety and help drive down operating costs. “With the latest updates to the P-Tier wheel loaders, we’re delivering more than just performance,” said Katie Voelliger, product marketing manager, John Deere. “When operators arrive at the job site, they know their machines are ready to work. Thanks to simplified routine maintenance, they spend less time on prep and more time on the task at hand. We focused on the details that give our customers a competitive advantage on the job site.” Designed to make job sites more productive, the P-Tier wheel loaders feature an integrated suite of smart systems that simplify maintenance and aid in getting machines ready to run, according to John Deere. With onboard diagnostics, including daily fluid checks, fluid loss detection and battery
health monitoring, all easily accessible through the in-cab display, operators can manage uptime with confidence. The John Deere exclusive QuadCool cooling system is a highlight in durability and serviceability in the updated P-Tier wheel loaders. Redesigned rear hoods, grilles and cab roofs eliminate the need to climb on the machine for maintenance, while sideaccess planes simplify cleaning of the condenser and radiator. The newly relocated axle cooling system is now easier to access and maintain and a reverse fan clears debris out through the side doors, designed to minimize buildup beneath the machine. In addition, the rear door opens independently from the sides, making daily maintenance more convenient. Inside the cab, operators will now benefit from the new, next generation primary display, a 7-in. primary touchscreen that offers a larger interface and intuitive navigation that helps to enhance operator focus and simplifies operation. This display enables a new in-base rear camera view and supports the ability to run two applications simultaneously, including the backup camera. Also, physical buttons have been removed from the display face to
improve user experience, while key machine functions remain easily accessible. An optional G5 secondary display is available to further enhance operator control and customization, offering expanded functionality in a dual-screen layout. To further boost job site performance, the P-Tier models can now be equipped with SmartDetect from the factory. This optional camera-based system enhances operator awareness by detecting objects and people near the machine and provides visual and distinctive audible bystander alerts on the in-cab display. When equipped with SmartDetect, the G5 display acts as a secondary screen, while the next-generation primary display remains the main interface. Combining cameras, radar and machine learning, SmartDetect aids in improving situational awareness and productivity on the job site. Lastly, to support greater material handling efficiency, the P-Tier wheel loaders are now available with new high-strength steel buckets featuring extended lips. These redesigned buckets increase material holding capacity by approximately five percent, allowing customers to move more material per pass and finish jobs more quickly. Alternative Fuels Help Construction’s Sustainability Push Conventional diesel is the fuel of choice in the construction industry and engine and equipment manufacturers have made strides in improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions, according to ConExpo-Con/ AGG. Alternative energy sources like batteryelectric, renewable diesel, natural gas and hydrogen play an increasingly important role in the construction industry’s move toward low-carbon and zero-emissions power sources. “At the end of the day, construction firms need to keep projects on schedule and on budget,” said Dana Wuesthoff, show director of ConExpo-Con/AGG. “Construction companies are also interested in finding practical ways to reduce their carbon footprint. The variety of construction equipment that can run on electric power and other alternative energy sources continues to grow, giving contractors more viable options to advance their sustainability initiatives without compromising productivity.” Easier Way to Electrify Battery-electric is the most common alternative energy source at the moment for
compact construction machinery like skid steers and compact wheel loaders. Zero emissions, reduced noise levels and lower operating costs are all appealing benefits for construction firms, according to ConExpoCon/AGG. Concerns about battery reliability and charging infrastructure have been among the key barriers to adoption. Another concern has been the higher upfront purchasing cost associated with electric construction equipment. Some recent innovations are seeking to address that. Moog Construction, has developed an electrification suite to help manufacturers electrify construction equipment. Moog’s Adaptive Electrification Management System (AEMS) eliminates the need for several separate electrical boxes that are connected via cables, according to ConExpoCon/AGG. Nate Keller, business development manager of Moog, said this more streamlined approach, helps provide a 30 percent cost savings on the electronics and a 50 percent parts count reduction. Aside from electrifying their primary
jobsite construction equipment, there are other ways construction firms can take advantage of battery power to lower operating costs and carbon footprint. Support equipment like air compressors is a good example of where companies could begin migrating away from diesel, according to ConExpo-Con/AGG. VMAC has developed a battery-electric rotary screw air compressor that provides 45 minutes of runtime at full output. According to Jomo Green, VMAC’s vice president of sales and marketing, it is ideal for nextgeneration service trucks operating in urban and regulated environments. Manufacturers also are finding that they don’t have to electrify entire pieces of equipment to begin lowering carbon footprint. Hitek Equipment, manufacturer of the Pavijet mini-paver attachment for skid steers and loaders, has developed a new model that features an electric-heated screed as opposed to the typical propane-heated screed. “This provides a little more energy independence to the paving operation,” said Tyler Wiese, a sales consultant of Hitek Equipment.
One Engine, Several Fuel Types Cummins’ next-gen X15 off-highway engine made its United States debut at ConExpo-Con/AGG 2026. This engine builds on Cummins’ HELM fuel-agnostic platform that makes it easier for equipment owners to migrate to alternative fuels, according to ConExpo-Con/AGG.. HELM engines share a common base engine block with common installation and integration points. Then, the cylinder heads and fuel systems are tailored for different types of fuels, such as diesel, natural gas, hydrogen etc. If a user wants to begin using an alternative fuel in the future, they can continue using their next-gen X15 engine by adapting those components above the block. “All of this leads to more uptime, better efficiency and less cost to operate,” said Mariana Pivetta, global market director of the off-highway segment of Cummins’ engine business unit. For construction firms that are conscious of both their carbon footprint and bottom line, that kind of flexibility can help knock down the barriers to alternative fuel adoption.

Echoes of Emma Golf Tournament Continues Legacy of Giving
T
he sixth annual Echoes of Emma Golf Tournament brought friends, family, business associates and supporters together Aug. 24, 2026, at Green Valley Country Club in Greenville, S.C., raising funds for scholarships while honoring the memory of Emma Frances Calder. Emma, the youngest daughter of David and Sally Calder, was 16 and a junior at Wade Hampton High School when she was killed in a car accident Sept. 15, 2020. Remembered for her kindness, compassion and love of nature and animals, Emma dreamed of attending Clemson University and becoming a marine biologist. Following her death, the Calder family established Echoes of Emma to honor her memory by helping other young people pursue their educational goals. The organization’s primary focus is a scholarship fund for Greenville County students attending Clemson University. According to Tim Hayes, an Echoes of Emma board member, the fund has grown to approximately $749,000 during the six years of the event. “We choose students and Clemson chooses the students, but it is based on academics and also students that have displayed acts of kindness,” Hayes told Construction Equipment Guide. The fund is structured as a perpetuity fund, with a percentage eventually used each year to provide partial scholarships. Fourteen students are participating in the program this year, with the number expected to increase as the fund grows. “As the fund continues to grow, we’ll be able to impact more students and provide greater scholarship support,” Hayes said. Calder Brothers Corporation, the family-owned Taylors company that manufactures Mauldin Paving Products asphalt paving equipment, plays a central role in the event. The company’s facility hosts the annual party and silent auction, bringing together employees, customers, contractors and others from the construction equipment industry. For the Calder family, the tournament has become a meaningful way to transform a devastating loss into a lasting legacy, providing educational opportunities for students while keeping Emma’s memory alive. SDLG Unveils New Products at The Landscape Show SDLG expanded its North American product portfolio at The Landscape Show in Orlando, Fla., introducing the STR1000H stand-on mini-track loader and the U113H diesel utility terrain vehicle (UTV) to landscape professionals and industry leaders in the Eastern region. Held at the Orange County Convention Center in August, the annual Florida Nursery Growers and Landscape Association (FNGLA) Landscape Show marked SDLG’s first appearance as an exhibitor. The event provided an opportunity for the Houston-based manufacturer to showcase its growing range of compact equipment for landscaping, nursery and property maintenance applications. The STR1000H stand-on mini-track loader represents SDLG’s entry into the growing stand-on mini-track loader market in North America. Powered by a 23-hp Kubota diesel engine, the STR1000H offers a 1,000-lb. rated operating capacity in a package measuring less than 3 ft. wide. Its compact footprint provides the maneuverability needed for work in confined areas, including residential properties, landscaping projects, nurseries and tree-care applications. The STR1000H is the first stand-on mini-track loader in SDLG’s lineup, with two additional models planned as the company continues to expand its compact equipment offering in North America. SDLG also unveiled the U113H diesel UTV, marking the company’s entry into the utility terrain vehicle market. Powered by a 24.7-hp Perkins diesel engine, the U113H features a hydrostatic transmission, 1,100-lb. payload capacity, top speed of 31 mph and towing capacity exceeding 2,200 lbs. Designed for demanding work environments, it combines utility with operator-focused features including zoned air conditioning, one-touch power windows and an electrically operated tilting cargo bed. SDLG also offers the U203HEV, an electric UTV powered by a lithium iron phosphate battery. The model expands the company’s UTV platform and provides an alternative power solution for applications where electric equipment is
preferred. The introduction of the STR1000H and U113H reflects SDLG’s continued investment in expanding its North American product lineup and dealer network. Both machines generated strong interest throughout The Landscape Show, attracting landscape professionals, nursery growers and property management professionals to the SDLG exhibit. Another product unveiled at The Landscape Show 2026 in Orlando, Fla., was the new SDLG U113H diesel UTV, the company’s first foray into the UTV market.
SDLG dealers who traveled to the show and were given the honors of unveiling the new machines were Scott Cline (L) and Brayden Whitlock of LineLock Equipment, based in Greenville, S.C.
The all-new SDLG STR1000H stand-on mini-track loader was unveiled at The Landscape Show and was viewed by many attendees as a perfect machine for tasks in the landscape and nursery operations industry.
Sound Heavy Machinery Launches New Website for Customers Sound Heavy Machinery (SHM) has launched a new website designed to make it easier for construction, agriculture and material-handling customers across North and South Carolina to explore equipment options, services, and industry trends. Available at SoundHM.com, the redesigned website features an advanced search engine technology, large-format photography, videos, downloadable brochures and information sheets and streamlined navigation across SHM’s equipment brands and product categories. SHM partnered with the Wilmington firm Springer Studios to develop a site that showcases SHM’s construction and materialhandling equipment, industry solutions and services. Its search-optimized design helps current and prospective customers find new and used equipment, learn about SHM and its brand partners, explore rental materialprocessing solutions, and request 24/7 mobile service and parts support. It also makes it
easy to request quotes for service, parts, and equipment online. “Everything today is digital, and it’s how our customers and operators want to access information,” said Mark Thomas, SHM chief marketing officer. “We have been working on this for the past six months and believe we have created a website that is always available to our North and South Carolina audiences, easy to navigate, and user-friendly.” Thomas added that the site complements SHM’s printed brochures and marketing materials, many of which are now available for download. It also serves as an educational resource on emerging technologies in the construction, agriculture, golf course maintenance, and material-processing market segments — including mulch, compost, food waste, sand and other materials handled by land-clearing operations, landfills and private processing facilities. In addition to product and service information, the website will feature a
monthly blog covering industry topics relevant to the Carolinas, including new equipment, government regulations and emerging technology. Customers can access equipment specifications, order parts and accessories and request rental units at any time. A key feature of the new site is a real-time, pre-owned equipment feeds that provide information on available inventory, benefits, pricing, financing and estimated monthly payments. “While it is a valuable sales tool for us, this website is also a great resource for owners, operators and operations personnel who need to understand what is available in the market,” said Mark Bobo, Sound Heavy Machinery president and owner. “Municipalities, landscapers, equipment operators, landfills, and commercial mulch or compost businesses often need immediate service or equipment. This site makes it easy to evaluate service options and take action at
any time of day.” “Our premise is that everyone wants to make a Sound decision,” Bobo added. “This website is another example of how we deliver on that promise by helping customers quickly find valuable information and take the next step.” Founded in 2010, Sound Heavy Machinery has grown steadily and serves customers throughout the Carolinas from its Wilmington, N.C., location. The company offers equipment from brands including Anaconda, ASV, AUSA, KOBELCO, Terex RT, Lamtrac, Faresin, Frana and a half dozen major attachment manufacturers. In addition to heavy-equipment rentals, SHM has expanded its mobile service department with new technicians and a fleet of mobile service vehicles. The company provides service for all makes and models, both in its shop and at customer job sites. For more information, call 910/782-2477 or visit SoundHM.com.

Diamond Mowers Reveals Its American Manufacturing Process
Diamond Mowers is opening its factory doors to show how American-built equipment goes from raw steel to job site-ready performance that goes beyond the “Made in the USA” label. Through a behind-the-scenes look at its Sioux Falls manufacturing operation, the company highlights the people, processes and quality standards that have shaped its mowing and vegetation management equipment for more than 25 years. “At Diamond Mowers, ‘Made in the USA’ isn’t just a label. It’s a promise,” said Nate Cleveringa, vice president of engineering and product management. “It means a commitment to engineering equipment that performs in the toughest conditions because it’s made by people who understand the demands of the job firsthand.” From Midwest-sourced steel to final testing, craftsmanship and performance come together to provide equipment that contractors and municipalities trust. From Midwest Steel to Job Site Performance Long before a machine reaches
the field, the work begins. It starts with steel sourced primarily from Midwest suppliers and chosen for its durability and consistency. From there, precision and purpose guide every step inside Diamond’s Sioux Falls, S.D., facility: Precision Cutting: Teams feed large sheets of steel through advanced laser cutting systems that run up to 22 hours a day. This ensures each component meets exact specifications, forming the foundation for consistent attachment performance and fit. Fabrication and Forming: Once cut, workers bend and shape components into the structural elements that define each attachment. This stage is critical for strength, balance and long-term durability. Welding and Structural Integrity: Skilled welders then bring parts together, reinforcing key stress points and confirming the structural integrity required for demanding applications like mulching, mowing and right-ofway clearing. Finishing and Protection: Each piece is painted and coated for protection against corrosion, wear,
any unit leaves the facility, it undergoes a run and evaluation process to confirm performance, reliability and readiness for realworld use. Delivery to the Field: From initial steel processing to final shipment, the full build cycle typically takes one-and-a-half to two months, reflecting a deliberate approach that prioritizes quality and performance over shortcuts. “The meticulous oversight our team displays throughout this manufacturing process pays off where it matters most: performance in the field,” said Cleveringa.

Where Build Quality Pays Off For professionals in vegetation management, roadside maintenance and land clearing, equipment failure amounts to lost time, lost revenue and increased risk. Industry estimates show unplanned equipment downtime can cost contractors hundreds of dollars per hour, underscoring the importance of reliable machines that perform consistently under pressure. see DIAMOND page 34

Because it manages fabrication and assembly domestically, Diamond can keep a tighter grip on materials, production and quality standards. It also shortens the distance between engineering, manufacturing and customer support, so that what crews experience on the job can quickly shape what gets built next. Just as important, this process supports the workforce behind the work. Every machine represents the effort of employees who take pride in what they build and how it will be used. Larger Footprint in Field Over time, Diamond’s strategic focus on high performance, from fabrication to the field, has translated into measurable growth and a broader footprint across the industry. For more than 25 years, the company steadily expanded its reach while staying grounded in the same principles that built its reputation in the first place: • more than 40,000 units sold
across a wide range of vegetation management applications • more than 300 dealers supporting customers across the world • more than 25 government contracts, reflecting long-term trust from municipalities and public agencies This scale matters for customers because it means access to equipment, parts and expertise, all backed by a network that understands the complexity of the job. The work ahead will keep changing as demands on equipment continue to grow, from clearing rights-of-way and managing invasive species to maintaining infrastructure and reclaiming land. The one thing that won’t change? Diamond’s commitment to meet those needs by manufacturing reliable, purposedriven equipment backed by people who stand behind it. “The promise behind ‘Made in the USA’ isn’t just part of our story; it’s the foundation of it,” said Cleveringa. Talbot Bros. Takes Lead On $138.7M Highway 7 Widening OXFORD from page 1
“Oxford needs help with getting people into and back out of town. With additional lanes, travelers will be able to continue moving without stopping behind every vehicle that makes a turn. The addition of J-turns and R-cuts also will improve the overall flow of traffic by reducing delays and conflicts caused by left-turn movements, making travel through the corridor smoother and more efficient.” The work includes grading, drainage, bridge building and paving. Construction began in late 2025, with expected completion by fall 2029. Smithey said the December groundbreaking went well, with Northern Transportation Commissioner John Caldwell and MDOT executive director Brad White were among those in attendance. “It was a good event on a cold day,” Smithey said. “All those responsible were able to talk about construction beginning on a project that had been wanted for over 20 years.” Talbot Bros. Construction of Nesbit, Miss., serves as the general contractor on the State Route 7 project. “They are an in-state contractor that’s big enough to handle the workload of a project of this size,” said Smithey. “With the partnership that Talbot has entered into with Ste Bil Grading Inc. of Waterford, Miss., they have made major strides in the construction process that would not have been possible without the extra manpower.” As for the biggest challenges for crews, said Smithey, “There’s a section of wetland that is sensitive to construction. On more than half the project, we have large sandy hills that pose erosion problems, along with multiple utility providers in numerous locations that have been in conflict.” Currently, box culverts installation is taking place, as well as bridge piling, caps, hanging beams, decking, pipe installation, dirt hauling and utility relocations. walls have yet to be constructed. The contractors must move into the next phase of construction and relocate traffic to complete the project. The work includes the construction of bridges, box culverts and drainage pipes, which will require various excavation and embankment areas to establish the proper grades. These grade adjustments are necessary to ensure the bridges and drainage structures function properly and provide adequate drainage throughout the project. see OXFORD page 70

Shaft Screener Builds Better, More Durable Mountain Trails
MB Crusher photo
Every road starts with a solid foundation. The same principle applies to mountain bike trails.
Carbon frame. Race suspension. Highperformance tires. Every mountain biker searches for the perfect set-up. The most important element isn’t the bike at all – it’s the ground beneath it. Comfort, traction and flow all depend first and foremost on the quality of the trail surface. A well-built trail must withstand weather, repeated use and natural erosion while delivering a consistent riding experience year after year. Achieving that starts long before the first rider arrives. It begins with the excavator and an MB Crusher shaft screener, according to MB Crusher. Start With the Right Ground Italian trail-builder Tasso Trail knows that a durable trail starts with properly prepared material. To prepare the base for new trails, the company chose an MB-HDS207 shaft screener mounted on a Caterpillar mini excavator. Rather than importing aggregates, excavated material is processed directly on site. Soil containing rocks of varying sizes is screened to produce a consistent gradation, creating a stable, free-draining base ready for
final shaping. The result is a trail structure that is easier to compact, offers improved drainage and delivers greater long-term durability, according to MB Crusher. Building Trails Every road starts with a solid foundation. The same principle applies to mountain bike trails.
MB Crusher photo
To prepare the base for new trails, Tasso Trail chose an MB-HDS207 shaft screener mounted on a Caterpillar mini-excavator.
The foundation must carry repeated loads, shed water efficiently and remain stable throughout the seasons. Material preparation is therefore one of the most critical stages of the project. “We used to spend a lot of time raking the soil and bringing in additional material,” said Emiliano Pinzi of Tasso Trail. “Now we can prepare exactly the gradation we need right on site. That allows us to work faster while
achieving a much more consistent result.” By removing oversized rocks and producing a uniform material, the finished base distributes loads more evenly, improves drainage and helps the trail retain its shape for much longer. It’s the same engineering principle used in road construction, adapted to the specific demands of mountain bike trails. see TRAIL page 50

Finlay, a global manufacturer of mobile crushing, screening and conveying equipment, expanded its horizontal impact crusher range with the launch of the I‑130 and I‑130RS. Positioned between the I‑120/I‑120RS and the larger I‑140/I‑140RS, the new models address demand for a machine that delivers strong impact performance while being easier to transport and configure across a wide range of applications. The I‑130 models were developed for quarrying, recycling, asphalt and demolition operations where efficient reduction, consistent product shaping and simplified material flow are required. At the core is a 1065mm x 1245mm (42-in. x 49-in.) four‑bar rotor with twin hydraulic aprons, delivering aggressive reduction and consistent shaping across a broad range of materials. A direct‑drive system with soft‑start provides smooth engagement, fuel efficiency and reduced wear on drivetrain components. Material is delivered to the chamber via a heavy‑duty vibrating grizzly feeder, with the option of an independent pre‑screen to remove fines ahead of the chamber, reducing wear and improving overall efficiency. Beneath the chamber, an optional under‑pan feeder provides additional belt protection, managing rebar and directing material safely onto the main product conveyor when used in conjunction with the optional overband magnet. Designed for operators who do not require onboard screening and recirculation, the I‑130 offers straightforward operation, strong service access and durable components, making it a practical solution for high‑output crushing across multiple

applications. For operations requiring closed‑loop crushing and on‑board screening, the Finlay I‑130RS integrates a high‑capacity two‑deck afterscreen and recirculation system within the same mid-range platform. The large two‑deck afterscreen is the biggest in its class, which provides high throughput, screening capacity and flexibility of configuration. Both decks can be recirculated for closed‑loop applications, or operators can divert bottom‑deck oversized material to produce a mid‑grade product, increasing output flexibility without the need for a separate screener. The 500mm (20-in.) recirculation conveyor slews up to 90 degrees, allowing
material to be efficiently stockpiled when required. For recycling and C&D applications, an optional windsifter can be fitted to the afterscreen to remove light contaminants such as wood, paper and plastic, improving final product quality. A key feature of the I‑130RS is its modular design. The entire RS section can be quickly detached to reduce transport weight when screening is not required. Alternatively, the RS conveyor can remain in place while only the afterscreen is removed, giving operators the flexibility to configure the machine to suit specific job requirements. Both models offer easy access to service areas, with large platforms, clear walkways and straightforward maintenance points. Fully hinged crusher sections simplify blow
bar changes and liner inspections, helping reduce downtime and improve safety. “Building on the market success of the I‑120 and I‑120RS, the I‑130 and I‑130RS were developed to meet demand for a more transport‑friendly impact crusher with increased configuration flexibility,” said Matt Dickson, business line director for Finlay. “The result is a machine that can be tailored to suit a range of recycling and quarrying applications, with options including use of a pre-screen, under-pan feeder, windsifter and onboard recirculation, while remaining easy to operate and maintain for efficient, low‑complexity production on site.” For more information, visit terex.com/ finlay/en/impact-crushers. Superior Names DeBow New Washing Product Manager
Superior Industries, a US-based manufacturer and global supplier of bulk material processing and handling systems, has named Lauren DeBow as washing product manager. In her new role, DeBow will guide product development, market strategy, training initiatives and sales support for Superior’s growing and diverse portfolio of wet processing equipment. DeBow brings 12 years of aggregate processing experience to the position, with a career spanning equipment applications, technical sales and product management. She joined Superior in 2023 as an applications specialist, working closely with aggregate producers and Superior’s dealer partners to develop custom equipment solutions for unique washing applications. “Lauren [Debow] has spent her career studying metallurgy and applications, solving complex processing challenges, and getting her boots dirty in the field,” said Matt Voigt, Superior’s director of products. “She has a knack for seeing where wet processing is headed, understanding the challenges producers are running into, and digging into
the details until she finds a better way to solve them.” A graduate of the Colorado School of Mines with a degree in metallurgical and materials engineering, DeBow began her career in mineral processing before moving into aggregate equipment. Prior to joining Superior, she held applications and product management roles with Weir Minerals and later worked in technical sales for Astec Industries. That experience has given DeBow a frontline view of evolving washing requirements across the industry. “Washing is becoming more important in places where producers historically didn’t need it,” said DeBow. “As deposits become more challenging and water becomes more constrained, there are opportunities to rethink how material is processed and how efficiently we use the resources available to us.” DeBow will work cross-functionally with Superior’s engineering, applications, sales, marketing and manufacturing teams to advance the company’s washing equipment portfolio and support dealers and producers throughout North America.

Trail construction demonstrates how a shaft screener can deliver value far beyond conventional construction projects. TRAIL from page 41
Making the Most of Onsite Material As investment in mountain bike parks and recreational trail networks continues to grow, sustainability has become an increasingly important consideration for contractors and local authorities alike, according to MB Crusher. Processing excavated material on site reduces the need for imported aggregates, limits truck movements and significantly cuts material handling. Instead of becoming waste, excavated soil is transformed into a valuable construction resource. For contractors working in mountainous or environmentally sensitive areas, this approach offers clear advantages: less hauling, fewer material movements and a more efficient job site, according to MB Crusher. The benefits become even greater on remote projects,
where transporting material can be both expensive and logistically challenging. Every truck trip takes time, increases costs and impacts the surrounding environment. Producing specification–ready material directly on site simplifies operations while helping preserve the surrounding landscape. Beyond Traditional Construction Sites Trail construction demonstrates how a shaft screener can deliver value far beyond conventional construction projects. The same equipment used every day in construction, demolition, quarrying and landscaping also enables contractors to deliver specialist trail-building projects efficiently and sustainably. For contractors, this means expanding the range of jobs their excavators can handle. For trail builders and landscape contractors, it provides complete control over material quality without relying on imported aggregates.

Volvo Increases Recycled Materials in Heavy-Duty Trucks Volvo Trucks announced that it has increased the use of recycled and renewable materials in its newest heavy-duty truck models, reflecting the company’s effort to reduce the environmental impact from truck manufacturing. From recycled plastics and responsibly sourced wood to manufacturing processes that support circularity, Volvo Trucks is incorporating more sustainable materials throughout its vehicles to reduce environmental impact. The design philosophy is woven throughout the allnew Volvo VNL and VNR, the company’s latest generation of heavy-duty trucks designed for long-haul and regional-haul operations. “Our vision for the future of transportation extends beyond reducing tailpipe emissions,” said Peter Voorhoeve, president, Volvo Trucks North America. “Every component of a truck presents an opportunity to reduce environmental impact. The all-new Volvo VNL and VNR demonstrate how sustainable material choices can be integrated into vehicle design while maintaining the premium quality, durability and performance our customers expect from Volvo Trucks.” Beginning in May 2026, the splash shield, located inside the front wheel well, is now manufactured using 75 percent recycled plastic, which reduces carbon emissions associated with the manufacturing of this component. Additional recycled content is used throughout the cab, including carpets containing up to 50 percent recycled material and seatback components containing up to 75 percent recycled fibers. Looking ahead, Volvo Trucks plans to expand the use of recycled materials in the Volvo VNL and VNR to use recycled plastic in 44 instrument panel components. The material will be sourced and recycled in the United States and is expected to reduce carbon emissions associated with those parts. see VOLVO page 56
The all-new Volvo VNL Ultimate trim features genuine wood trim sourced from responsibly managed forests, along with recycled materials incorporated throughout the interior components, reflecting Volvo Trucks’ commitment to sustainable design.

Volvo’s New VNL, VNR Stellar Industries Announces Its New Models Will Contain Standard Hooklift Bumper Design Sustainable Materials Stellar Industries, a 100 percent employee owned and operated manufacturer of work trucks, trailers and service truck and van accessories, announced its new standard bumper design for the popular NXT Series Hooklifts is now available for order. These bumpers are available in both bolt-on and welded configurations for all new NXT Series orders. The new bumper design simplifies installation while allowing operators to add essential accessories, including cameras, hitch options and gladhands. The bumpers come in two capacity options: the 20K, designed for Class 3 – 6 chassis with a 20,000-lb. pull capacity, and the 90K, built for Class 7 and 8 chassis with a 90,000-lb. pull capacity. This bumper design was developed and tested over the past two years, using data-focused structural testing to ensure precise hitch load ratings, according to Stellar. The project involved an ongoing partnership with Iowa State University’s Center for Industrial Research and
Service (CIRAS) to validate multiple configurations under rated load, fatigue and failure conditions. This rigorous testing ensures that customers receive a product backed by proven performance and structural integrity, added the company. “We’ve introduced, tested and

One of the most visible examples is the sustainably sourced real wood trim in the instrument panel. Unlike simulated wood finishes commonly used throughout the industry, Volvo Trucks offers genuine wood trim sourced from responsibly managed forests, combining premium craftsmanship with sustainable sourcing practices. “Sustainable design is most successful when customers never have to choose between environmental responsibility and product quality,” said Brian Balicki, head of design, Volvo Trucks North America. “Our goal is to create products that look and feel premium while reducing environmental impact throughout the vehicle life cycle.” These advancements are the result of ongoing collaboration across Volvo to identify and implement more sustainable materials and manufacturing processes. Teams continue to evaluate emerging technologies, including bio-based composites, recycled consumer plastics, reclaimed ocean plastics and renewable material alternatives. The sustainable materials featured in today’s Volvo VNL and VNR represent only the beginning of a broader strategy to increase recycled content, improve recyclability and support a more circular future for commercial transportation. Simulator Training Can Shorten Trainee Learning Curve TRAINING from page 1
In lineman safety training, CM Labs found that every week a trainee spends on a heavy equipment simulator equates to two weeks or more in the field. Training times and safety improve simultaneously, said Daniel Cooper of the American Line Builders Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (ALBAT). In a joint webinar hosted last year, Cooper and CM-Labs’ Gary James discussed how simulation can change how workforce development is approached. Cooper and James both believe simulation technology allows trainees to make mistakes safely, learn faster and retain more. Keeping It Real With Less Stress In the webinar, Cooper said that his goal in adding simulation to ALBAT’s lineman training program was improved safety. “Our biggest training reason for bringing in simulation was that safety aspect,” he said in the discussion. “The movements feel real without the danger.” Heavy equipment simulators empower students to fail safely and learn from their mistakes, believes CM Labs. This approach reduces the stress and pressure of live equipment for trainees as they are still learning. Starting on real equipment straight from the classroom can be dangerous and cause serious accidents, said CM Labs. “So, using the simulator as a stepping stone during training helps with heavy equipment operator safety.” In the webinar, James agreed that simulation training allows students to learn from their mistakes in a safe and risk-free manner. “If you don’t do it wrong a hundred times, you’ll never get it right,” he said.
a more engaging experience. Plus, with simulators students can observe and learn from each other. Hands-on simulation lessons also can foster healthy competition between students, as they check who can get the better score or the fastest time. “You’ll have your star student telling another apprentice how to do it and why it’s done in that manner,” said Cooper. This leads to their retaining more information while fostering team building and making for a more enjoyable learning experience overall. The final point Cooper and James stressed in their webinar is that the use of simulation MIT photo for operator training has been a big shift for the construction industry. MIT and Sumitomo engineers want to shorten the learning curve for excavator operators with a new training interface and more Simulation affords those completely intuitive controller that resembles a miniature excavator’s arm and unfamiliar with the industry the opportunity bucket. to join the workforce and learn both safely and efficiently. Cooper said after just five minutes on the simulator, “Drop your bravado,” said Cooper. “Yes, we didn’t have ALBAT operators told him, “Oh, I can feel the seat. Heavy equipment operators must learn complicated mental maps to direct a digger to move rocks, grade soil, clear debris and dig foundations. In fact, it can often take years for operators to build up expertise in maneuvering the heavy machines.
Critical Starting Point for More Proficient, Safer Workforce Caterpillar simulators provide trainees a controlled environment to learn foundational skills, practice complex techniques and build confidence. And they experience these benefits long before they ever climb into a cab, according to a Cat Simulators blog post. Companies and training institutions are using simulation to reduce incidents, reinforce best practices and create consistent training standards, said Cat. “We want to make sure our people are safe,” said David Leonard group technical manager of McConnell Dowell. “Simulation helps us do that by letting them experience hazards before they encounter them on the job.” Cat believes Leonard’s perspective reflects a growing industry shift toward proactive, scenario-based safety training. “Safety training no longer begins on the job site — it begins in a risk-free environment where operators can make mistakes, correct them and improve.” In fact, in another blog post, Cat details how students at the Empower College & Career Center are gaining real-world skills through simulator training. The center’s heavy equipment operator (HEO) pathway in Jefferson, Ga., was one of the state’s first dedicated HEO pathways. Empower expanded its training environment with a Cat Simulators training package allows students to practice working together on a coordinated, simulated job site. see TRAINING page 70

Oxford Project Includes 11 New Bridges, Two Box Bridges OXFORD from page 40
Crews are using automated machine grading to allow for faster work. Smithey noted that 2,541,398 cu. yds. of dirt/ material will be moved on the project, with paving requiring temporary roads for construction phasing, new mainline, overlay existing pavements, side streets and driveways. A total of 11 new bridges and two box bridges will be built. “Most of the bridges will utilize a substructure consisting of metal pipe piles with reinforced concrete caps and a superstructure composed of prestressed concrete beams, a reinforced concrete deck slab and concrete railing,” said Smithey. “The two bridges at the north end of the project will incorporate a hybrid substructure foundation system, with the intermediate bents supported by metal pipe piles and the end bents supported by steel H-piles, while utilizing the same superstructure components as all other bridges within the project. Collectively, the bridges will comprise approximately 3,934 linear feet of structure.” Paving work will include some temporary roads for construction phasing, new mainline, overlay existing pavements, side streets and driveways. Many existing intersections will be completely changed as the project advances. Some existing minor streets are to be routed onto frontage roads that will allow traffic to more safely enter the highway in areas that have better sight distance. John Deere, Cat, Volvo, Link-Belt, KOBELCO and Komatsu equipment is among the heavy machinery required on the project. Cranes, dozers and front-end loaders can be spotted on site, along with a mini-excavator, man lifts, a motor grader, dump trucks, pumps, screeds, sheep’s foot

rollers, track hoes, tractors and a trench roller. Chief materials include a quality pit source for the borrow needed to build the project, along with steel, pipe, 59,000 tons of rip-rap and 23,000 tons of ¾-in. down crushed stone base. Smithey said outdoor conditions are always a concern for crews. “During the spring months, weather can have a significant impact on construction activities, particularly during heavy rain. Extended periods of rain can leave soil conditions too
wet to support construction operations, resulting in delays that may last several days. These conditions also create challenges for erosion and sediment control, making it critical to prevent sediment from entering Mississippi’s waterways, and to remain in compliance with environmental regulations. “During summer and winter, extreme temperatures present additional challenges, particularly for concrete placement. High temperatures may require concrete pours to be performed at night and require additional curing measures to retain adequate moisture. Conversely, cold temperatures may delay concrete placement or require the concrete to be covered and protected after the pour to maintain proper curing temperatures and ensure the concrete achieves the required strength.” Improving a dangerous stretch of roadway used by approximately 40,000 motorists each day is extremely satisfying for everyone involved in the project. “One of the most rewarding aspects of working on a project is seeing it come to fruition,” said Smithey. “As engineers, we often develop the initial design and layout, but due to funding limitations or other delays, some projects are postponed temporarily and may never reach the construction phase. Being able to watch a project progress from design to completion is both exciting and fulfilling. “It’s especially rewarding to see the traffic improvements and safety features discussed during planning and consulting meetings become a reality. Knowing that those improvements will enhance traffic operations and help save lives for many years to come makes the work even more meaningful. CEG
Mechanical Arm Allows Remote Operation for Training TRAINING from page 60
At Paul D. Camp Community College in Franklin, Va., HEO students receive hands-on training and an industry-aligned curriculum. Learners range from recent high-school graduates to adults seeking new skills, a career change or the confidence to operate equipment safely on their property. After completing the eight-week NCCER Core Curriculum prerequisite, students attend classes two evenings a week for 10 weeks. They receive hands-on training on the college’s Cat Simulators — dozer, wheel loader and excavator central to the Level 1 HEO program. Students typically complete approximately 30 hours of simulator time. There’s flexibility for those who need more practice or advance more quickly. “The closer we can emulate the real equipment, the better prepared our students are.” Could Better Mousetrap Be Found? Excavator operators must learn complicated mental maps to direct a digger to move rocks, grade soil, clear debris and dig foundations. In fact, it can often take years for operators
to build up expertise in maneuvering the heavy machines. MIT engineers want to shorten the learning curve for excavator operators with a new training interface and more intuitive controller. Instead of using joysticks, the team has designed a controller that resembles a miniature excavator’s arm and bucket. Trainees grasp the device and use their arm and hand to make it move as an excavator does. Meanwhile a digital excavator projected on an immersive six-screen display mirrors the trainee’s movements in a virtual environment. “This is a more intuitive way to command the machine,” said Hermano Krebs, principal research scientist of MIT’s Department of Mechanical Engineering. “With this new interface, we can eliminate a lot of the mental maps that an operator would need to build in order to operate an excavator.” Jennifer Chu of MIT News reported that Krebs sees the interface as a faster way to train excavator operators. Krebs also envisions a new way to physically operate the machines, both on site and remotely. “Instead of having joysticks, you might
have this miniature arm on the side, where the operator would place their own arm, kind of like an exoskeleton.” This technology would allow them to operate the excavator in the cab, Krebs said. “If work has to be done in a difficult or unsafe environment, you could have an operator sitting off site in a trailer and using this arm to remotely tele-operate.” The team of Moises Alencastre-Miranda, Joao Buzzatto and Eran Beeri Bamani reported its results in the Journal of Computing and Civil Engineering. The trio worked with collaborators from Sumitomo Heavy Industries, industrial machinery manufacturer based in Japan. At MIT, Krebs’ group works on humanrobot interactions, with a long-time focus on physical rehabilitation. They accumulated knowledge about the ways in which humans control their limbs and how they can most intuitively interact with machines. Operators typically learn by driving actual excavators on a controlled driving course. As they operate the machine, novices must learn to relate the actions of the excavator’s joysticks with the movements of the arm, bucket and cab.
Coordinating these actions to carry out actual tasks adds another level of complexity that can take months to years to master. The team reasoned that if they could eliminate the need for this mental map, they might significantly shorten the training process. To do so, they looked for a more natural way to control the machine, as an alternative to the traditional joysticks and landed on the mechanical arm design. The resemblance to the digger’s arm and bucket could enable operators to mimic and control the excavator’s movements directly with less mental translation. The combination of the mechanical arm and virtual simulator constitutes a new training and control platform for digger operators, World-Space Interface. “‘World-space’ refers to everything in the world that is outside of yourself, or in this case, outside of the excavator’s cab,” Krebs said. Normally, operators must build a mental map of how to manipulate things in the world-space, he said. “But now, we can just mime picking up rocks or dirt, and the computer will do that translation to the world-space for us.” CEG
