$2.3B Calcasieu River Bridge Under Way in La.

The new bridge is expected to improve safety, traffic capacity, hurricane evacuation, regional economic development and long-term reliability for one of the nation’s busiest east-west freight corridors.
Early construction work to build the foundation of the new I-10 Calcasieu River Bridge is under way, laying the groundwork for the record-making $2.3 billion project — the largest of its kind in Louisiana history. “The new I-10 Calcasieu River Bridge represents the culmination of more than 40 years of planning and advocacy, transforming a long-recognized transportation challenge into Louisiana’s largest transportation infrastructure investment,” Patricia Prebula, public information manager of Calcasieu Bridge Partners, told Construction Equipment Guide. Since the April groundbreaking, recent activities by crews for design-builder Louisiana Bridge Builders include placing permanent bridge piles into templates, driving foundation piles, preparing work platforms and constructing temporary access roads that support ongoing operations, Prebula said. “Survey teams continue to monitor and verify construction elevations to ensure each phase is built with precision, while crews also perform utility relocations and site preparation along the corridor.”

SCDOT Advances Counts Sausage Road Bridge Replacement The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) is moving forward with a bridge replacement project in Newberry County that will provide a safer and more reliable crossing over the Bush River while improving access for residents and emergency responders in the area. The project involves replacing the aging bridge carrying S-244 (Counts Sausage Road) over the Bush River southeast of Newberry. According to SCDOT, the existing structure has reached the end of its service life and is subject to weight restrictions that limit its ability to accommodate modern traffic demands. Located between S.C. 395 and Elbert Hunter Road, the bridge serves rural residents, agricultural traffic and local businesses. SCDOT officials said the replacement will improve safety, enhance mobility and reduce longterm maintenance needs. According to the agency’s project overview, the new bridge is being designed to meet current engineering standards and provide a more durable crossing over the Bush River. Construction activity has already resulted in a closure of the existing bridge. According to SCDOT’s road conditions information, Counts Sausage Road is closed at the Bush River crossing and traffic is being detoured while crews complete the work. The closure is expected to remain in place through the construction period. A video released by SCDOT highlights the scope of the project and shows plans for the new structure, which will replace the existing bridge with a wider and more modern crossing designed to better accommodate current and future traffic. The agency noted that maintaining a safe and dependable route across the river is a primary goal of the project. The work represents one of several bridge replacement projects underway across South Carolina as SCDOT continues efforts to address aging infrastructure. According to the department’s current projects list, the Counts Sausage Road bridge replacement is part of a statewide initiative to improve structurally deficient and functionally obsolete bridges. Project plans call for demolition of the existing bridge and construction of a new structure on the same alignment. Bid documents indicate the work includes bridge construction access, removal and disposal of the existing bridge, excavation, pile installation, structural steel, reinforced concrete elements,

roadway approaches, asphalt paving, drainage improvements, guardrail work, signing and pavement markings. The project presents a variety of construction challenges. Crews must work in and around the Bush River while minimizing environmental impacts and maintaining safety throughout the construction zone. Bridge construction activities will include foundation work, substructure construction and installation of the bridge superstructure before roadway connections are completed. According to SCDOT contract information, the project carries a construction schedule extending into late 2027, reflecting the complexity of replacing a river crossing while meeting environmental permitting requirements and modern design standards. Heavy construction equipment will play a significant
role throughout the project. Excavators, cranes, pile-driving equipment, earthmoving machines and paving crews will be used to complete the bridge foundations, roadway approaches and final surface work. The project also includes significant quantities of structural steel and reinforced concrete components, according to bid information released by the department. Once complete, the new bridge is expected to provide a safer and more resilient crossing for motorists traveling through southeastern Newberry County. SCDOT officials said the investment will improve reliability for local traffic while reducing maintenance costs associated with the aging structure. According to the agency, the replacement will ensure that Counts Sausage Road continues to serve the community for decades to come. CEG

CCS Builds On Family Legacy With New Ownership, Expansion Katherine Petrik
CEG SENIOR EDITOR
CCS Equipment is entering a new chapter as Todd Snyder and Logan Davis take ownership of the company their fathers helped build from the ground up in 1998. The family-owned dealership, based in Youngsville, N.C., has grown from a small startup operating above an ice cream parlor into a three-location equipment dealer serving customers across central and eastern North Carolina. Today, CCS Equipment operates locations in Youngsville, Angier and Ayden and is recognized as a leading Takeuchi dealer. In 2025, the company was named Takeuchi Dealer of the Year, an achievement that reflects performance across sales, service, parts support and customer satisfaction. “We run the business hands-on,” Snyder said. “We are able to answer questions and take care of any issues that pop up pretty quickly.” Company Built On Relationships CCS Equipment was founded in July 1998 by Charlie Snyder, Charles Davis and Steve Jeffries. The company’s name comes from the founders’ first initials. The three partners had worked together previously in another equipment-related business and decided to start their own dealership using the industry contacts they had built over the years. “They wanted to go out there and do
something on their own with their contacts,” Snyder said. The founders bought and repaired used equipment, eventually establishing a connection to import used excavators from Japan. “That’s kind of where it all took off from,” Snyder said. “They were able to use their contacts and reach out to a lot of utility contractors originally. That was kind of the base of their business.” CCS Equipment transitioned into selling new equipment shortly after its founding. The company initially became a Gehl dealer and later added Takeuchi equipment in 2000. Snyder recalled hearing that the original Takeuchi dealership agreement was signed in the back of a pickup truck in a grocery store parking lot, a story that illustrates the entrepreneurial spirit behind the company’s early growth. Next Generation Snyder and Davis both grew up around the equipment business and eventually joined CCS Equipment after gaining experience in other roles. Snyder attended North Carolina State University and worked for a large textile company before returning to the equipment industry. He joined CCS Equipment in 1999, beginning in outside sales. “These guys approached me and said they were looking to put somebody on the road,” Snyder said. “That’s where I started with CCS.”

Davis joined the company in 2005 after deciding the equipment industry was the right fit for him. “I had a passion for sales and the equipment industry and being able to work with my father I found that as a blessing,” said Davis. Before moving into outside sales, Davis

JCB Hydromax Sets New Hydrogen Land-Speed Record JCB took its hydrogen engine technology from the construction site to the Bonneville Salt Flats on Aug. 11, 2026, where its Hydromax race car reached an average speed of 406.32 mph to set a new world land-speed record for a hydrogen-powered internal-combustion vehicle. Driven by Wing Commander Andy Green, Hydromax recorded 400.623 mph on its first run and 412.135 mph on its second. The two runs were made in opposite directions in accordance with Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) rules. The record is subject to FIA ratification. The 32-ft.-long Hydromax is powered by two production-based JCB hydrogen combustion engines producing a combined 1,600 horsepower. The engines were manufactured at JCB’s facility in Foston, Derbyshire, England, and are based on technology developed for the company’s construction equipment. The run surpassed the previous FIAofficiated hydrogen internal-combustion record of 185.5 mph, set by the BMW H2R in 2004. It also exceeded JCB’s own 350.092-mph diesel land-speed record, established by Green behind the wheel of JCB Dieselmax at Bonneville in 2006. “Twenty years ago, we came to Bonneville with JCB Dieselmax and showed what British engineering could do with diesel power,” JCB Chairman Anthony Bamford said. “Today we have done it again — this time with engines powered by hydrogen.” “Bonneville is the spiritual home of the world land-speed record, and JCB Hydromax has just written itself into that history,” Green said. “The car was terrific — stable, strong and fast. Setting a world land-speed record with hydrogen power, 20 years after Dieselmax, is a huge privilege. This record is a huge achievement by a world-class team and superb technology.” JCB has invested approximately $135 million in its hydrogen engine program. The company said it has produced more than 150 hydrogen combustion engines, with the first hydrogen-powered machines now entering production. JCB unveiled its first hydrogen-powered construction equipment prototypes — a backhoe loader and Loadall telescopic handler — in 2021. The company is developing hydrogen combustion as

an alternative power source for heavy equipment. The hydrogen-powered machines are not currently commercially available in the United States. The record comes as JCB prepares to open a new $500 million manufacturing facility in San Antonio, Texas. The company expects the plant to employ approximately 1,500 people and manufacture construction equipment for the U.S. market. JCB h previously used speed-record projects to demonstrate its engineering capabilities. In addition to Dieselmax’s 2006 record, a JCB Fastrac reached 135.191 mph in 2019 to become the world’s fastest tractor. In 2014, the JCB GT established a 72.58 mph speed record for a backhoe loader. For JCB, the Hydromax project is intended to demonstrate the potential of hydrogen combustion technology developed for construction equipment. When operated on hydrogen, the company said the engines produce no CO2 at the tailpipe. The record comes ahead of the opening of JCB’s new $500 million factory in San Antonio, Texas, which will employ 1,500 people manufacturing machines for the U.S. market. (All photos courtesy of JCB.)

Caterpillar Expands Workforce Initiative to Arkansas Workers
Caterpillar, alongside Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, announced the launch of its workforce commitment in Ark., marking another meaningful step in its five-year, $100 million Building the Future Workforce Initiative. With an allocation of up to $3 million, the funding aims to prepare Ark. workers for jobs in modern manufacturing and industry technician roles. “Every community has the talent to build a strong manufacturing workforce. Investments like this can help create more opportunities for that talent to grow and succeed,” said Christy Pambianchi, Caterpillar’s chief human resources officer.
Arkansas, Strategic Manufacturing State As Caterpillar places growing emphasis on strengthening manufacturing capabilities, the state represents an opportunity for growth, and the state’s rising potential made it a natural fit for this investment. Caterpillar employs more than 530

people in Ark. and works with 60 suppliers across the state. “You can’t build the industries of tomorrow without building the workforce to power them,” said Gov. Sanders. “Caterpillar understands that the future of manufacturing depends on investing in people just as much as technology. By connecting training directly to the needs of employers, this initiative will give more Arkansans the skills to step into good-paying careers and give businesses another reason to invest, expand and create jobs in our state.” In North Little Rock, Caterpillar’s facility opened in 2010 as a dedicated motor grader plant and later expanded to add medium wheel loader and paving products to the product line. The facility also is embracing modern manufacturing technologies to improve efficiency, quality, velocity and cost and has established itself as a safety leader and an early adopter of technologies to keep team members safe, according to Caterpillar. Caterpillar helps strengthen collaboration among training institutions, students, employers and other key communitybased organizations to ensure individuals have access to affordable, relevant training that supports career advancement, according to the company. The initiative seeks to expand hands-on manufacturing pathways for students, increase technical training capacity across the region and deepen employer engagement through collaborations with leading organizations, including the University of Arkansas Pulaski Technical College, Little Rock Regional Chamber and Academies of Central Arkansas. This marks the fifth allocation for this initiative.

CCS Prides Itself On Building Customer Relationships CCS from page 12
Expanding Across North Carolina As the company grew, CCS Equipment expanded beyond its Youngsville headquarters. The second branch opened in Angier in 2015. The third branch opened in Ayden in 2020, extending the company’s reach into eastern North Carolina near Greenville. The expansion has allowed CCS Equipment to provide equipment sales, parts and service support to a broader customer base while maintaining its family-oriented approach. Takeuchi Dealer of the Year CCS Equipment’s recognition as Takeuchi Dealer of the Year in 2025 was a significant milestone for the dealership. According to Snyder and Davis, the award is based on a wide range of performance criteria, not simply total sales volume. The dealership exceeded targets related to market share, year-over-year parts growth, sales training, marketing investment and technician training. Takeuchi also evaluates dealers on warranty claim processing, service support and the ability to sell a broad range of equipment models to different customer segments. “It’s pretty comprehensive,” Snyder said. “They want you to hit all the models they offer throughout the year and serve a broad range of customers.” Davis added that the award reflects the efforts of the entire CCS Equipment team.
“Good people. That’s really what it comes down to. We have a customer base and people here who care about taking care of those customers.”
Focus On Customer Relationships North Carolina’s growing construction market has created opportunities for equipment dealers throughout the region, and CCS Equipment has expanded alongside that growth. Snyder said the dealership’s size allows employees to respond quickly when customer needs arise. “Our boat turns pretty quickly,” he said. “We can adjust and address customer issues promptly.” Davis said the company also strives to maintain open communication with customers when issues occur. “We’re trying to be as fair as we can be to both sides,” he said. One customer relationship that stands out for Davis dates back to the years following the 2008-09 recession, when a retaining wall contractor purchased several new machines from CCS Equipment. “That was a big deal to us,” Davis said. “It breathed some life into the company.” Fifteen years later, the contractor remains one of the dealership’s long-term customers, and Davis said the relationship helped CCS Equipment expand into additional market segments beyond its traditional utility contractor base. Service, Parts Support CCS Equipment offers sales, parts and full service at all three locations and maintains a
fleet of service trucks that support customers in the field. The company has invested in developing younger technicians, many of whom are in their mid- to late-20s. “We’re willing to make the investment if we believe we can turn them into a good technician,” Davis said. That investment has helped CCS Equipment build a service team with both technical experience and familiarity with the dealership’s customers and equipment lines. The company also maintains a substantial parts inventory to reduce equipment downtime. “We have as high a fill rate as we can,” Snyder said. “Our software system helps us track what parts we are selling and make sure we keep important items in stock.” For Takeuchi equipment, CCS Equipment also can access parts through the manufacturer’s distribution network in Pendergrass, Ga., allowing the dealership to obtain parts quickly when they are not available locally. “We jump on the phone and make something happen,” Davis said. “The goal is to get our customers taken care of and keep them from being down for long.”
Looking Ahead In addition to new equipment sales, CCS Equipment remains active in the used equipment market, particularly through trade-ins from its existing customer base. “There’s a big appetite for the used market right now,” Snyder said. “We’re pretty aggressive on the trade-ins.” As the new owners, Snyder and Davis

are continuing to explore opportunities for growth while remaining focused on improving the company’s operations and customer support. “We’re always looking for a way to be better.” For CCS Equipment, the transition to second-generation ownership represents both continuity and opportunity. The company remains rooted in the relationships and service philosophy established by its founders, while positioning itself for continued growth in North Carolina’s expanding construction equipment market. HIPOWER: What to Know Before Choosing Generator Choosing the right generator size is essential to ensure reliability, protect your equipment and avoid unnecessary costs. Whether your genset will be used for continuous, prime or standby power, careful planning can help you avoid common pitfalls. Key factors to consider: 1. Start with the Load: The first and most critical step in sizing a generator is understanding your power requirements. Identify the loads that are essential to your operation and determine their power demands when utility power is unavailable. Create a list of all required loads, including their voltages, to size your generator correctly. Undersizing can lead to startup failures or even damage connected equipment. Conversely, oversizing can result in inefficient operation, increased maintenance and higher repair costs due to light loading. As businesses grow, power demands often increase. It’s common to oversize a genset by a margin to accommodate future expansion but avoid going too far — expansion plans that take too long
indicates their locked rotor current. Using this data helps achieve more accurate generator sizing. To manage reactive loads effectively and avoid oversizing, consider: Load sequencing: Bringing loads online in stages — allowing one motor to reach full operation before starting the next — can significantly reduce the generator’s required capacity. Advanced starters: Using soft starters or Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) can minimize the inrush current by controlling voltage and frequency during startup, allowing for a smaller genset without sacrificing performance. 3. Match Site Requirements: Voltage and frequency stability, as well as Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), must meet the needs of your specific application. Generators used for life safety, fire prevention or other critical systems have stricter regulations, often dictated by local, state and national codes. Always verify that the engine and generator are correctly sized to meet these performance standards. 4. Choose the Right Fuel: Fuel type

to materialize can lead to unnecessary expenses. 2. Understand the Type of Load: Not all loads behave the same. Loads can be broadly divided into resistive and reactive (non-linear): Resistive loads (such as incandescent lighting or heating elements) draw the same current to start as they do to run. Reactive loads (such as motors, pumps and HVAC systems) require significantly more power to start, making them the biggest factor in generator sizing. Motors and similar equipment often list their NEMA code on data plates, which
is another important consideration for commercial and industrial generators. The three most common options are diesel, natural gas and propane, each with its own advantages: Diesel: On-site fuel storage, generally lower cost per kW (depending on emissions requirements), but higher fuel costs and emissions. Fuel must be delivered during extended outages. Natural Gas: Cleaner emissions, lower fuel costs and readily available if a gas line exists. Generators typically have a higher upfront cost, and new gas line installation may add expenses. Propane: On-site storage, relatively clean emissions and often lower fuel costs than diesel. Like diesel, fuel must be delivered during long outages and per kW costs tend to be higher. Each site has unique needs, so weigh the pros and cons carefully before deciding.
Power With Confidence The right generator sizing ensures optimal performance, protects your investment and supports future growth. For expert advice tailored to your specific application, reach out to your HIPOWER sales or support team.

Dash-5 Paver Resurfaces Winding Road to German Castle Ruins
Tight hairpin turns, steep gradients and narrow passages characterize the vital access road to the Falkenstein castle ruins, located at an altitude of 4,190 ft., and the hotel with a gourmet restaurant located just below. Here, the new Vögele road paver Super 1800-5 X demonstrates why it is the right choice for difficult paving tasks.
Job Site With Many Challenges The road to the castle ruins, which is just over 1.2 mi. long, is only 10 ft. wide in sections and is already showing its age. The stretch of road is bumpy and has deep potholes. “This job site has a lot of tricky features. We are dealing with a steep gradient Wirtgen photo and very tight curves at the same time. That is a challenge for the paving and logistics,” said Sascha Böck, managing director of the contractor Josef Böck GmbH, describing the task. He planned the operation meticulously in advance. Only three-axle trucks can be used for mix delivery due to the hairpin Paver operator Tatjana Drexler benturns. The paver keeps to the line perfectly and we get a uniform paving result, which is not something to be taken for granted given the poor condition of the existing surface and varying paving depths. The pressure bar of the screed is very helpful here for achieving high pre-compaction.” The extending screed AB 500 TP1 can be hydraulically adjusted from 8.4 ft. to 16.4 ft. By adding bolt-on extensions, an extension up to 28.7 ft. is possible.

Recognizing Future Workforce...
AED Foundation Celebrates 150th High School Milestone As the equipment industry continues to face a shortage of an estimated 10,000 technicians each year, the AED Foundation (AEDF) is expanding its efforts to build the future workforce by reaching a major milestone: Waukegan High School has become the Foundation’s 150th AEDF Recognized High School. The achievement marks another significant step in the Foundation’s mission to connect students with rewarding careers in the equipment industry while helping dealers and manufacturers address the growing demand for skilled technicians, the association said. “Becoming an AED Foundation Recognized High School is a tremendous milestone for Waukegan High School and our new Diesel Mechanics program,” said David Marks, CTE academic chair/ coordinator of Waukegan High School. “This recognition validates our commitment to providing students with an industryaligned education that prepares them for high-demand careers in the equipment industry. Through our partnership with the AED Foundation, our students will have access to high-quality curriculum, industry
standards and career opportunities that will help build the next generation of skilled technicians. We are honored to be part of this growing network of recognized schools and proud to contribute to strengthening the future workforce.” The AEDF Recognized High School Program introduces students to careers in the equipment industry through handson technical education and industryaligned curriculum while cultivating relationships among students, educators, schools, dealers, manufacturers and industry partners to build a sustainable talent pipeline for the equipment industry. In addition to recognizing high school programs, the Foundation also accredits college equipment technology programs, ensuring educational programs at both the secondary and post-secondary levels meet industry standards and prepare graduates for successful careers. The success of the program is made possible by AED members and industry partners who invest their time, expertise and resources into developing tomorrow’s workforce, the association said. “West Side Tractor is committed to
our future workforce,” said Beth Bayless, training and development specialist of West Side Tractor Sales. “Helping students learn about the great career opportunities that exist in our industry is an important mission for West Side Tractor. We’re so excited that AED has reached 150 Recognized High Schools. It’s a great network that provides valuable connections and support for the AED-recognized schools.” Over the past four years, the AED Foundation has transformed workforce development across the equipment industry through accomplishments that include: • 104 Accredited College Programs across North America; • 150 Recognized High School Programs introducing students to careers in the equipment industry; • More than 5,000 students connected with equipment industry employers through AED Foundation workforce events; • Eighty-six percent of AED Foundation program students enter careers within the equipment industry including 1,447 newly certified technicians; and • More than $100,000 returned to
the equipment industry through federal and state workforce grants supporting workforce development initiatives. AED Foundation Standards Committee and its Evaluation Team Leaders, who have dedicated more than 4,000 hours to evaluating post-secondary programs and curriculum to ensure graduates, are prepared to meet the evolving technical and workforce demands of the equipment industry, according to the association. “Reaching 150 Recognized High Schools is an incredible milestone because every school represents new opportunities to inspire students and strengthen our industry’s future workforce,” said Brian P. McGuire, president of the AED Foundation. “The success of this program reflects the commitment of educators, industry partners and AED members who are working together to address the skilled labor shortage. By expanding our network of Recognized High Schools, we’re creating more opportunities for students to discover rewarding careers while helping ensure the equipment industry has the talented workforce it needs for years to come.”

In the Allgäu region, the serpentine road to Germany’s highest castle ruins, Falkenstein, was successfully rehabilitated using three Wirtgen Group machines. CASTLE from page 47
activity for the summer. She would never have dreamed back then that she would one day drive a road paver. “Today, it is my dream job,” she said, describing her career choice. She has only ever operated Vögele road pavers and would not want to switch. “Why would I, when I’m already out here with the best machine,” she said with a smile. Drexler loves controlling large machines safely, even under difficult conditions, while keeping an eye on her colleagues at the paving screed and the entire working area. The further developed operating concept ErgoPlus 5 is helpful in this regard. While operators always have to get used to one or two new features on a new machine, she was able to get used to the new paver very quickly due to the operating logic being very similar to the predecessor model. Operation is even simpler and more intuitive; the SmartWheel enables very precise steering, and the new touch display offers many additional options, according to Vögele. “Visually and technically, you can see that the machine has been noticeably further developed,” she said about the new road paver.

The Vögele paver Super 1800-5 X and the tandem rollers HD 13 VO and HD 10 VT from Hamm.
Compaction On Slope of More Than 30 Percent For final compaction, the team uses an oscillation roller HD 13 VO and an HD 10 VT from Hamm. Above all, the gradient of the route, which is more than 30 percent in parts, paired with the tight hairpin turns, places high demands on the skill of the roller operator and the capabilities of the rollers. They must be driven with great sensitivity so as not to push the mix, tear it apart or cause the roller to slip. This is precisely where the 3-point articulation of the Hamm rollers
proves once again to be a valuable feature. Successful Premiere of New Super 1800-5 X After just a few days, Germany’s highest gourmet restaurant and highest castle ruins, as well as the hotel below, are easily accessible again. The use of the Vögele road paver Super 1800-5 X with the extending screed AB 500 TP1 made a significant contribution to this. For more information, visit wirtgengroup.com.

Piledriving Begins for Strong Foundation On New Bridge

Completion of the new bridge is scheduled for 2031. CALCASIEU from page 1
The project will replace the current I-10 Calcasieu River Bridge, formally named the Louisiana Memorial World War II Bridge and known locally as the Pistol Bridge for the crossed pistols embellishing the railings. It includes improvements from the I-210/I-10 interchange in Westlake to Ryan Street in Lake Charles, a stretch of about 5.5 mi. The new bridge will be built just north of the existing river crossing and will feature three 12-ft. travel lanes in each direction, as well as one auxiliary lane in each direction to improve merging and traffic flow. There will also be full 12ft. inside and outside shoulders for emergency access. The bridge profile will be reduced from about 152 ft. to 75 to 95 ft., “making it easier and safer for motorists,” Prebula said. In addition, the new bridge will feature modern roadway lighting, reconstruction of interstate approaches, ramps, frontage roads and key interchanges, as well as improved pedestrian, bicycle and multimodal connectivity near the foot of the bridge. An elevated Sampson Street overpass will eliminate train-related delays.

A Mi-Jack rubber-tired gantry crane (RTG) moves and positions the pile around the casting yard.
The new bridge also will feature “an all-electronic tolling system with interoperability with toll systems in other states,” Prebula said. “Traffic will continue moving at highway speeds while overhead sensors and cameras detect vehicles and charge tolls automatically.” The existing bridge opened in 1952 and was designed to carry about 37,000 vehicles a day. “Today, it serves more than 90,000 vehicles daily,” Prebula said. “The bridge also predates the Interstate Highway System and lacks many modern features, including full shoulders, adequate lane widths, and a lower grade. The Federal Highway Administration gave the bridge a rating of 6.6 out of 100 and classified it as “structurally deficient and functionally obsolete,” according to a 2017 report. see CALCASIEU page 74

The project will replace the current I-10 Calcasieu River Bridge, formally named the Louisiana Memorial World War II Bridge and known locally as the Pistol Bridge for the crossed pistols embellishing the railings.
Initial pile driving has begun, building a strong foundation for the progress that’s coming to Southwest Louisiana. The piles are driven deep into the ground to create a strong, stable foundation to support the bridge for generations.

Hyperscalers Create Big Demand for Skilled Workers JOBS from page 1
Data center “hyperscalers” Google, Amazon and Meta are funneling millions into the construction of mammoth data centers across the country. These mega projects require infrastructure, and the demand for craft workers to build the infrastructure is inflating worker salaries as a result. According to Fortune magazine, this year upwards of $100 billion could be invested by these tech companies into the U.S. data center buildout. Bank of America estimated global hyperscale spending rose 67 percent in 2025. The company expected another 31 percent rise this year. It reported a shocking $611 billion investment has been made in the nation’s AI buildout in just two years. And Fortune reports that as a result, construction workers are experiencing a pay bump for data center projects. Finding the right workers is still a challenge, though. “The AI race is now front-page news,” said Fraser Patterson, CEO and founder of Skillit, construction’s first AI-powered hiring platform. On a mission to fix the industry’s labor shortage, Skillit has been working on the labor infrastructure for AI construction projects. Zoom Out, Challenge Comes Into Focus “We’re in a multi-trillion-dollar buildout investment cycle that’ll support the energy, semiconductor and manufacturing sectors,” Patterson said. “There’s no AI without that infrastructure and there’s no infrastructure without skilled labor.” Suddenly, the industry is seeing a huge tech shift, added Patterson. And a problem that was persistent for years is now front and center. Alongside fuel, labor is the number one challenge in our ability to build out AI infrastructure, he said. That’s why there is so much interest in this problem. “I think for many years it wasn’t just underinvesting in American skilled craft workforce, but it also was misdiagnosing the problem,” he said. “We have something like 400,000 workers missing from about 8.3 million workers on the
a large enterprise scale.” For contractors doing mission critical work, their recruiting team can search for the workers needed instantly. “That infrastructure previously never existed,” he said. “It was very much word of mouth, in a union hall, or ‘this worker we just hired knows of a worker.’ It’s a very inefficient, painful process to discover, assess and bring skilled workers onboard. That’s the underlying problem, we believe.” He said if the company’s AIbased system could solve just this challenge, 95 percent of the construction workforce would become available for infrastructure jobs. “We’ve never before had workers be able to digitize who Adobe Stock photo they are as a nuanced craft The industry has for years tried to route skilled workers throughout a very fragmented construcworker,” he said. tion sites, wasting many of them in by not showcasing their skill levels. Foundation Work Continues On Historic Louisiana Project CALCASIEU from page 66
The new bridge is expected to improve safety, traffic capacity, hurricane evacuation, regional economic development and long-term reliability for one of the nation’s busiest east-west freight corridors, Prebula said. The project currently has approximately 300 employees with the number projected to rise to approximately 800 at peak construction. During the project’s life cycle, the project is anticipated to create more than 16,000 jobs. It is funded through a public-private partnership or P3 with funding coming from federal, state and private sources along with toll revenue. Approximately $1.2B of the funding is from public funding (federal and state) and the remainder from a private developer – Calcasieu Bridge Partners. The Louisiana Department of Transportation & Development (LADOTD) is the owner of the project. Other partners include: • GEC and HNTB serving as the Owner’s Verification Representative and responsible for ensuring all the specifications in the contract are adhered to on behalf the LADOTD. • Developer Calcasieu Bridge Partners, which consists of three companies: Acciona, Sacyr (Suh – Seer), and Plenary. • Design-Build contractor Louisiana Bridge Builders, a joint venture between Acciona and Sacyr, which has the responsibility to oversee the design and construction of the project. • Lead designer Calcasieu Design Partners, which consists of Huval, Jassan Spann Engineering, Arcadis, and ModjeskiMasters.

Early construction work to build the foundation of the new I-10 Calcasieu River Bridge is under way, laying the groundwork for the record-making $2.3 billion project — the largest of its kind in Louisiana history
• The tolling operator is Kapsch. • The Operations and Maintenance Contractor is Calcasieu Bridge Partners. They are currently and will be responsible for operating and maintaining the corridor for the life of this project. Prebula described the new bridge as a “legacy”.
“I wanted to be part of a project that will be here for our next generations,” she said. “Other employees who are working on this project feel the same way. We are proud to be part of history being made.” Completion of the new bridge is scheduled for 2031. CEG
Skillit Revolutionizes Recruitment of Skilled Workers JOBS from page 70
“Skillit’s mission is to solve construction’s labor shortage, starting with fixing access to the millions of skilled workers who already exist,” said Patterson in announcing the partnership. “Having strategic partners … is a strong signal that the industry is ready for, and consolidating around, a new category of AI-powered craft hiring infrastructure.” Patterson said the construction industry is entering an era where workforce infrastructure is as critical as project management, procurement, and scheduling. “As a self-performing contractor, we understand firsthand how complex and dynamic the skilled craft labor needs are,” said Eric Lamb, DPR Construction board member. Lamb said Skillit’s platform reflects that direction as its AI-powered infrastructure helps DPR teams connect with talent in the skilled trades. DPR supports an approach “that expands access to meaningful work and drives more predictable outcomes for our project teams and their customers,” he added. Jit Kee Chin, CTO of Suffolk Construction, said Skillit is addressing a critical gap in the industry with purposebuilt technology.

Data centers are a single hyper-skill project requiring thousands of workers over a very short time. The project scales are enormous, which heightens the need for equipment operators, electricians, welders and other skilled construction workers in a very short period of time.
“Construction’s workforce challenges require new infrastructure and smarter systems,” said Chin, managing partner of Suffolk Technologies. Skillit’s technology is designed “for the realities of construction hiring and labor deployment,” Chin added. “As labor becomes the industry’s most constrained resource, the ability to attract and deploy skilled talent will increasingly define the winners and losers in construction,” he said.
Skillit is creating the talent network for 80 percent of workers who don’t sit behind a desk, said Diana Kay, Suffolk Technologies partner. In an era defined by renewed investment in physical industries, this fundamentally changes how labor is found, mobilized and managed.” Skillit also is being tapped by dozens in the construction sector, including Swinerton, Mortenson and Brasfield & Gorrie Industries. These relationships further support the
company’s continued growth across the built world, said Patterson. He believes the challenge for skilled craft workers going through traditional recruiting channels is a lack of “first-principle thinking” on the part of the recruiters. Until now, “they didn’t have the insight into the fact that there’s not a shortage but an access problem,” he said. Recruiters, union hall conversations and word-of-mouth referrals don’t target the enterprise contractors who do 70 percent of the infrastructure work. He said until they find Skillit, customers are using online sites like Indeed or job boards and recruiters. “It’s not a great solution for all the points mentioned,” he said. “Many are using staffing agencies,” he added. “But that gets expensive if you’re scaling a data center project. Multiply that by 15 to 30 workers’ first year wages.” Furthermore, said Patterson, word-ofmouth and employee referrals can actually be a double-edged sword. “You hire a supervisor who comes with five workers. That works out great until the supervisor leaves and leaves with those five workers. It’s not a great strategy for now or for the future as America scales its AI and data center infrastructure.” CEG

Kubota Updates Its L47, M62 TLB Backhoes to Meet Needs
Kubota photo Kubota’s L47 backhoe loader was updated to fit today’s contractors’ needs.
Kubota’s L47 and M62 tractor-loaderbackhoes (TLBs) have features designed to meet the needs of the construction, landscaping and rental sectors. Both TLBs are more powerful than their predecessors and comply with Tier 4 Final emissions regulations, according to Kubota. An optional hydraulic coupler, available on both models, enables easy attachment and detachment of auxiliary implements,
