At the risk of many puns being made on its name, Louisiana’s Geaux Wider project is Louisiana Department of Transportation & Development’s ambitious multi-year project to decrease travel time between Interstates 10 and 12 in East Baton Rouge and Livingston Parishes. The goal of this $86 million federally funded project is to enhance safety and relieve congestion along these heavily traveled highways by widening them from four to six lanes. With an expected completion date in the third or fourth quarter of 2012, the Geaux Wider Initiative will be built in three phases with stages. Phase I Stage I, now completed, consisted of construction of temporary lanes for traffic detours on the east and eastbound lanes. Phase I Stage II will involve construction of new inside lanes and shoulder throughout the existing median, with work beginning on center phases of Wards Creek, Essen Lane, Bluebonnet and Siegen Lane overpass bridges in Baton Rouge. Phase II Stage I will allow westbound traffic to be shifted to the new lane and shoulder in the center median while the westbound bridges and lanes are being rebuilt. Eastbound vehicles

will continue to use the existing bridges. Phase II Stage II will allow westbound traffic to be shifted from the center median to the new westbound lanes. Eastbound traffic will then move to the center of the new lane and shoulder while outside portions of road and bridge construction of the eastbound lanes is carried out. Phase III is expected to begin in the first
quarter of 2011 and end in the last quarter of the same year. It will open traffic on the new inside and center lanes while permanent shoulders and outside lanes are constructed eastbound and westbound. Phase III-A involves reconstruction of the on/off-ramps in designated areas of Interstates 10 and 12. see GEAUX page 44

Caterpillar to Invest $700M in Production Upgrades

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) Caterpillar Inc. said June 17 that it plans to invest almost $700 million over the next four years to start producing mining shovels and expand production of its trucks at plants in Illinois and India. The world’s largest maker of construction and mining equipment said it plans to add a new mining shovel production line at its Aurora, Ill., plant and expand truck production in Decatur, Ill., and Chennai, India. The new mining shovels will range from 125to 800-ton (113 to 725 t) models. The 125-ton

shovels are expected to be available in 2011 with larger models following in 2013 and 2014. The Aurora plant is likely to gain about 300 jobs through 2014. Caterpillar spokesman Jim Dugan said jobs will be added at the other plants as demand increases, but the Peoria company doesn’t know how many. Caterpillar said these expansions should increase the truck production capacity of the Decatur plant by about 30 percent. That plant produces Caterpillar’s largest mining trucks, including its 400-ton (363 t) model. The truck capacity of the Indian plant will double to help Caterpillar meet increasing demand in commodity-rich developing regions
like Asia. “This investment of nearly $700 million demonstrates our commitment to Caterpillar mining customers around the world,” said Doug Oberhelman, who will become Caterpillar’s CEO in July. “It also is a great example of the job-creation benefits of global trade.” Oberhelman said more than 60 percent of the large mining equipment made at Caterpillar’s Illinois facilities are sold outside the United States. Caterpillar has said it’s seeing stronger demand for its iconic yellow-and-black machinery because the economy has begun to recover from the recession.

Flagler Construction’s new facility is located at 9601 Boggy Creek Road, on the south side of Orlando, Fla.
Opportunity recently came knocking for Flagler Construction Equipment, and it has a new facility to show for it. Flagler’s new facility, located at 9601 Boggy Creek Road, on the south side of Orlando, represents the full line of Volvo construction and paving equipment, as well as Champion and Mauldin equipment. “This facility came available and it provided the opportunity to upgrade our facilities to match our customers and the products we serve. It was also a good opportunity to get a good facility designed for an equipment dealership,” said Steve Tanner, vice president of sales. The new location allowed Flagler to upgrade and expand its product support in the central Florida area. “We now have a full service hydraulic cylinder service where we can handle cylinders 24 feet long and up to 24 inches in diameter,” Howard Allen, vice president of product sup-
port said. “We also have a small component rebuild area that we didn’t have before and now have the space to rebuild asphalt pavers,” he added. The new facility also includes expanded capability for fleet lube services and the additional property will allow Flagler to expand A hydraulic cylinder service machine. its rental fleet. 4700 Millenia Blvd., Suite 500 in Rodney Weatherington, training Orlando, and the company has branchmanager, has been relocated to the new es in Davie, Ft. Case Construction Produces 250,000th Skid Steer Loader Case Construction Equipment recently celebrated production of its 250,000th skid steer loader. A special ceremony was held at the company’s global skid steer manufacturing facility in Wichita, Kan. Case presented the 250,000th skid steer to its new owner, Dino Folino of A. Folino Construction, a paving contractor from Oakmont, Pa. The milestone unit — a Case 430 Series 3 model — is Folino’s fourth Case skid steer in a fleet of equipment that includes a total of nine Case machines. Case began producing skid steers in 1969 with the 1530 Uni-Loader model, and has been innovating ever since with Case-exclusive features like ride control and side lighting. Last year, the company marked its 40th anniversary of manufacturing skid steers with Case Rockin’ Block Parties [especially themed dealer open houses] at Case dealerships across North America. “In 2000, we manufactured our 100,000th skid steer. Then, just 10 years later, we more than doubled our sales, said Curtis Goettel, skid steer marketing manager. “Today’s achievement testifies that customers around the world prefer Case skid steers. With more than 75 attachments available, you’ll find
Case skid steers digging, hauling, pushing and loading material on job sites in more than 150 countries around the globe. A. Folino Construction is a major paving contractor in the Pittsburgh area. The company was founded by Dino’s father, Anthony, in 1972 and operates a large equipment fleet, including Case wheel loaders, excavators, loader/backhoes and skid steers for a total of nine products, including the new skid steer. “We’re honored to take delivery of this machine, and we appreciate the attention that comes with owning the 250,000th Case skid steer, said Dino Folino. “We’ll put it to work right away, like all of our other Case equipment. We have Case skid steers on all of our crews — they’re versatile, dependable and the operators love them. We’ve been very pleased with all of our Case equipment, and with our Case dealer, Groff Tractor. The Case 400 Series 3 skid steer loader line includes eight models, ranging from 57 to 83 net hp (42 to 62 kW) and 1,500 to 3,000 lb. (680 to 1361 kg) rated operating loads. For more information, visit www.casece.com.

Yale Lift Trucks of Florida and Georgia has added JCB construction equipment to its lineup. This new division has been named JCB of Florida and South Georgia and will remain under the same ownership and management as Yale Lift Trucks of Florida and Georgia. It has been through this commitment to the customer that Yale Lift Trucks of Florida and Georgia has been able to form lasting relationships with their customers. We plan on bringing the same dedication and level of service to our JCB customers as we have for our Yale customers,” MacKinnon said. A JCB specialist on staff will be working with the other sales representatives to train them on the JCB line and the company will be setting up JCB training programs both in house and at the JCB training facility in Georgia. JCB Fields Squad for World Cup Duties in South Africa A squad of nine JCB Teletruk forklifts is playing a key role in preparing major stadiums that are hosting games during the 2010 World Cup tournaments in South Africa. The JCB Teletruks have been called up for general materials handling duties during the final construction and fit-out stages of hospitality suites and visitor facilities in and around the six principal World Cup venues in time to welcome thousands of fans from around the world. All of the Teletruks have been supplied by Clarklift South Africa (PTY) Ltd., the JCB Industrial dealer in South Africa. Two of the JCB Teletruks, manufactured by JCB Utility Products at its Cheadle plant in Staffordshire, have been deployed at Soccer City, Johannesburg — the main 94,000capacity World Cup stadium that will stage the opening games as well as the 2010 World Cup Final. There also are two machines working at the Durban Stadium and at Cape Town’s Green Point Stadium, while there is one machine on each site at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg, Free State Stadium at Bloemfontein and Peter Mokaba Stadium at Polokwane. Mike Poxon, international sales manager — JCB Industrial, said: “The tasks at the World Cup stadiums required a forklift truck that was flexible and capable of working on rough ground — and the JCB Teletruk fitted the bill perfectly. “The Teletruk provides a superior lift capacity and forward reach that extends over debris and stock piles of building materials, as well as a compact size and 4WD capability to handle rugged site conditions and limited working

spaces.” This is not the first time that JCB machines have been called up for World Cup duty — a 24 ton (22 t) JCB JS220 tracked excavator was used in the construction of the showcase Allianz Arena in Munich — the main stadium for the
2006 World Cup in Germany and now home to FC Bayern Munich. “We are delighted that JCB’s world-renowned products have once again been selected to play an integral part in the world’s largest football competition,” Poxon added.
Iowa Mold Tooling Expands Nichols Fleet Equipment’s Territory Jim Hasty, vice president of sales, Iowa Mold Tooling Co. Inc. (IMT), headquartered in Garner, Iowa, announced the expansion of Nichols Fleet Equipment Inc.’s territory in northern Alabama. Hasty stated, “Nichols Fleet Equipment has been with us since 1991 and we look forward to this expansion as an opportunity to further develop and grow our business together.” Based in Chattanooga, Tenn., Nichols Fleet Equipment Inc. is a factory- authorized dealer for sales and service for IMT mechanics trucks, truck mounted cranes and air compressors that was already serving Tennessee, portions of southern Kentucky, Georgia and the western Carolinas. With the addition of the new territory, Nichols now covers virtually every county north of Montgomery in the state of Alabama. Nichols’s founder and president, David Nichols, has had a lengthy relationship with the IMT product
line. His operation started small and has continuously grown. “In 1991, as a result of my service background, IMT gave me a one-year trial period to serve a small portion of Tennessee. Now almost 20 years later, the company employs 17 people and serves four states,” said Nichols. Experience in the industry is what drives the success of Nichols Fleet Equipment. “I’ve been in this industry since 1981 and our staff consists of several people who have been with us for more than 15 years. We have individuals that actually came to work for us from IMT who are highly skilled and have extensive knowledge of the current IMT equipment, as well as the older equipment. This is important in our business because one of the attributes that IMT equipment has is longevity. We consistently see units that are 20 years old that we are very familiar with and know how to troubleshoot and work

with,” added Nichols. In addition to IMT product longevity and name recognition in the industry being important to his business,
“IMT products are unsurpassed in quality, product support is extremely good and they’ve built a very well established distribution network in the U.S., which is big
when you have customers with service needs who have locations across the country,” Nichols noted. “Our focus has always been on customer service and product support. Machines that are down always take priority over new installations in our shop. In order to cover a territory as broad as what we have, we obviously put a focus and priority on down time and how quickly we can get our customers up and running,” said Nichols. With the expansion of territory, Nichols has been traveling extensively in the Alabama market to ensure that customers’ needs are being met and that the right people are in the right place to support their new marketplace in Alabama. Carolina Tractor and Pinnacle Cranes announced that Reed Owsley, vice president and general manager of Pinnacle Cranes, will be retiring from the company, effective December 31, 2010. Jim Mackinson has been named as Owsley’s successor and will join the company in early July. Owsley has been a key member of the Carolina Tractor executive management team since joining the company in December 2001, when Carolina Tractor acquired the distribution rights for Link-Belt Cranes in the Carolinas. His crane-industry experience positioned him well to lead the crane division at Carolina Tractor. During his tenure with Pinnacle Cranes, Owsley has been responsible for managing all aspects of sales and service for the company. “We appreciate the great contributions Reed has made to Carolina Tractor and Pinnacle Cranes,” Carolina Tractor President and CEO, Ed Weisiger Jr. announced. “Pinnacle Cranes, under Reed’s leadership, has been a consistent, high-performing area of our company and has been regularly recognized by Link-Belt Cranes for outstanding performance.”
Jim Mackinson will succeed Owsley as vice president and general manager of Pinnacle Cranes. Mackinson brings more than 28 years of industry experience to his new position at Pinnacle Cranes, most recently as president and CEO of Mackinson Crane, Middlesex, N.J., and Equipco Sales and Rental Corporation, Somerville, N.J. “Jim’s relentless customer focus and entrepreneurial spirit will serve our customers and employees well,” Weisiger said. “We are pleased to have Jim join the Carolina Tractor senior management team.” During this transitional period, Owsley will work to acquaint Mackinson with employees, customers and suppliers, as well as actively seeking opportunities with a number of national crane operators. Mackinson participates in several crane industry associations; including the Specialized Carriers and Rigging Association, Associated Equipment Distributors, and the Utility and Transportation Contractor’s Association. Crushing, Screening & Recycling Section Taking It to the Ultra Level…
Sand Science Marks 25 Years in Business With New Offering By Eric Olson CEG CORRESPONDENT
Gerry Kenny has worked with materials processing equipment almost his entire adult life. A gregarious Irishman, he has worked with screens and conveyors in Europe and Africa and since coming over to America more than 25 years ago, he has operated one of the most successful equipment dealerships in the Southeast. So it is not surprising that Kenny knows a few things about how to make friends with his customers and keep them happy. Through his company, Sand Science Inc. in Beaufort, S.C., Kenny has built a reputation among construction professionals as a very knowledgeable, reliable and personable dealer of high-quality equipment. Sand Science is marking 25 years in business in 2010 largely due to the fact that Kenny offers service that is one-on-one and family-oriented — not the rather impersonal brand of service favored by some companies. Kenny believes his approach leads to satisfied customers and by extension, more sales. “We may be a smaller company than a lot of dealerships, but we are very attentive to our customers,” Kenny explained. “Because we are smaller, though, we have flexibility and we have proven that by our longevity. The fact is we can move in a certain direction when we see our customers have a need, whereas bigger dealerships don’t have the ability to do that.” Kenny added that Sand Science doesn’t sell loaders or excavators — it is strictly a dealer of processing equipment. That includes several name-brand manufacturers, such as Finlay, Roto-Screen and Kafka. Because of that, Sand Science has become an expert at finding solutions for its customers in the handling of soil and aggregate materials. “We are able to listen to our customers and I can honestly say, realistically, after 25 years you would be hard pressed to find a customer in the region who would have bad

things to say about us,” he said. “If somebody has a problem, we will do what it takes to address that problem. Our customers’ needs are very important to us because we know that their recommendations are what will give us our next sale.” And it is that penchant for listening to his customers that gave Kenny the idea to add a new dimension to his company. Sand Science had already established itself as a substantial dealer of trommel machinery through Finlay and Roto-Screen. But most of that business was geared toward medium to large contractors.
“What I started to see was a need for a smaller, more flexible machine that you could move onto small sites and something that was a bit more affordable to small contractors,” Kenny said. “They were saying to me ‘Look, I would like to buy that brand of conveyor but I can’t afford it’ or ‘The sites I am working on don’t allow me to bring it in and out very easily. I just need something smaller.’” After doing a lot of research, Kenny found that the Ultra trommel, manufactured by Ultra Plant International, offered the very flexibility his smaller customers said they
needed. Due in large measure to his reputation and his contacts in the business — on both sides of the Atlantic — Kenny was able to suggest upgrades to the Ultra to make it more attractive to the contractor that needs a smaller than usual trommel. “Our aim was to provide something that had all the features of the bigger machines, but was more effective,” he said. “For example, there are machines out there that have little four-foot drums on them, but those are too small. We wanted to have features that see ULTRA page 36

oast to coast, from Shoshone to Sierra, Gallatin to Davy Crockett, Cherokee to White Mountain, they are more than our National Forests. They are national treasures. They thrill us with towering majesty and inspire us with breathtaking beauty. They provide wood for our homes, habitat for wildlife, clean air, and drinking water for millions of us. But they are being destroyed as never before, by disease and insects — and devastating fires. The Arbor Day Foundation asks for your help in replanting our National Forests — to restore their life-giving benefits and their aweinspiring splendor. We’ll do it one tree at a time. the bigger machines have, like a five-foot drum and a drum with no spokes. We also wanted a machine that had a variable speed feeder with a wide belt for material collection that was still portable and easy to move around and, obviously, one that was reliable. If you look at the Ultra you will see that it is basically a small version of the bigger machines.” As a result of his close relationship with the manufacturer, Sand Science has become the official distributor for the Ultra trommel in the United States. Right now, Kenny is the only Ultra dealer in the country, but he is currently looking for companies that want to offer Ultra products, he said. “I am really looking for smaller dealers, maybe someone who sells farm equipment and a couple of conveyors and mixers, too,” Kenny added. “We want smaller, more family-oriented businesses for Ultra, not big firms that sell competing products.” In that Kenny is just ramping up his Ultra business through Sand Science, he is more interested in finding dealers in the Southeast
first in order to make it easier to set up lines of distribution for parts and service. Once he gets the experience of working with other dealers, he hopes to set up Ultra dealerships in other parts of the country. His interest in developing family-oriented dealerships comes from the involvement of his own family in running Sand Science. From his 10-acre compound just off I-95 in Beaufort, Kenny has operated the business with the assistance of his wife and two sons, along with several other employees. A native of County Mayo, on the west coast of Ireland, Kenny worked for Powerscreen in Europe and South Africa for several years. While using Johannesburg as his base, he traveled all over the southern part of Africa in the early 1980s where, among other things, he showed diamond miners how to use portable processing equipment. Kenny’s African adventures are featured in the novel, “The Kimberley File,” which he published in the late 1990s and frequently gives out to his customers today. “They were all using static equipment at that time,” Kenny
said. Powerscreen brought him to the United States to set up a franchise for its equipment and gave him a choice as to where he wanted to live and work. “I am a warm weather man,” Kenny said. “The only places available were South Carolina and Georgia, so we chose Columbia, S.C. It was in January and I was led to believe it was a warm climate here, yet when I arrived it was 11 degrees and I didn’t even have a jacket.” He later moved to Beaufort chiefly because he and his English-born wife, Diane, loved the 1983 movie The Big Chill, which was filmed in the Beaufort area. Since then, the Kennys have become American citizens, as well as enthusiastic Gamecock fans due to their sons having attended the University of South Carolina. Kenny said that Sand Science’s high profile location just off I-95, coupled with his advertising exposure in Construction Equipment
Guide, has been great for advertising his business. As a result, he said, the company has had customers from “Maine to Honduras.” “But our main business comes from the Carolinas and Georgia, although because we are only two hours from Jacksonville we also do
his business is designed to get his customers what they need to be successful. “For example, if someone were to call me and say they are interested in an Ultra, we have a special program going where we will rent one to them for a week,” he explained. “Generally I wouldn’t rent anything for less than a month. But because the Ultra is new and there is a recession on where money is scarce for many small contractors, I will rent week to week for as long as they need it. Hopefully when they get enough money in Gerry Kenny it to get financing to Sand Science buy, they will remember that I got them going.” business in north Florida,” he For more information, call added. “I would say that we sell 843/525-6140, visit www.sandeverywhere within a 500-mile science.com or contact direction.” Gerry@sandscience.com. Sandvik’s CJ208 Crusher Offers Power in Small Package Another jaw crusher in the Sandvik CJ200 series is now available — the CJ208. This is a crusher for customers who do not want to compromise between lightweight and heavy-duty equipment, mobile and stationary applications, and process flexibility and easy operation. The new Sandvik CJ208 is the smallest member of the family. Sandvik’s CJ200 series offers a combination of lightweight equipment and heavyduty crushing applications. The optimized crushing chamber provides a high reduction ratio and capacity. The CJ200 series’ wide range of applications also includes the possibility of producing a 0 to 1.5 in. (0 to 4 cm) final product in one crushing stage. Moreover, the CJ200-series crushers are easy to operate and maintain, according to the manufacturer. The frame of Sandvik’s CJ200 series of jaw crushers is all-welded, making it equally strong in all directions and ensuring durability against shock loads. In turn, this minimizes the risk of mainframe failure, as seen with a bolted design. Furthermore, the design of the deep symmetrical crushing chamber maximizes feed size, capacity and reduction.
The CJ200’s heavy-duty capacity makes it a practical choice for stationary applications. The crusher’s compact, low-weight and easy-toinstall design also makes it ideal for use in mobile applications. Its bolted feet enable the Sandvik crusher to be used as a stationary unit with zero degree inclination or on a mobile unit with five-degree inclination. The Sandvik CJ208 and the other members of the 200 series are available with a range of optional equipment, such as automatic bearing lubrication, feed hopper, intermediate protection plate and a complete drive package, including motor, bracket, pulley, belt and flywheel/belt protection. The CJ200 series has low energy and operating costs due to its optimized flywheels. For example, the CJ208 model requires only a 74 hp (55 kW) motor to crush the hardest material with the smallest feed openings. The frame of Sandvik’s CJ200 series of jaw crushers is all-welded, making it equally strong in all directions and ensuring durability against shock loads.

TELC’s products mechanically lock the drive controls of all types of equipment, so even if the key is available, the equipment cannot be driven.
The Equipment Lock Company, a Virginia-based company, manufactures and sells universal anti-theft and safety devices for heavy equipment, trucks, trailers, sea containers and more. TELC’s products mechanically lock the drive controls of all types of equipment, so even if the key is available, the equipment cannot be driven. Pajamas optional. Operators spend more time in their cabs than they do in bed. That’s why the new Dash-3 cab is the most comfortable, operator-friendly work environment on an excavator today. Shock isolation. More interior space. Added legroom. A multilingual, widescreen, color LCD monitor. An adjustable suspension seat with wider seatback. Plus 47-percent more glass on the right-hand side for improved visibility. See how much gets done when operators are really comfortable. Not to mention content. Let them work in a new Zaxis Dash-3 Excavator. www.hitachiconstruction.com

DONATION - HELP Support IAAP’s Political Activities – The IAAP Political Action Committee (PAC) was created in order to provide financial support for our allies in the Illinois General Assembly. Whether from Chicago or Downstate Illinois, Democrat or Republican, these legislators all have one thing in common – they support bills that help the Illinois aggregates industry and oppose bills that hurt our interests. As the cost of political campaigns continues to rise, we want to ensure that legislators who support this industry can compete and continue to do good work. For that reason, supporting the IAAP PAC is critically important to the future of our industry, your company, and your Association’s political activities. Please consider sending a donation, payable to the IAAP, to: John Henriksen, Secretary/Treasurer, IAAP PAC, 1115 S. 2nd Street, Springfield, Illinois 62704. INFORMATION - The Transportation for Illinois Coalition (TFIC) has published and electronic version of it’s most recent white paper, an analysis of the 2009 capital program. To download a copy of this document, go to the TFIC website: http://www.tficillinois.org, click on publications and open the file entitled Capital Funding for Transportation. Questions? Please feel free to contact John Henriksen, Illinois Association of Aggregate Producers, 1115 South 2nd Street, Springfield, IL 62704. Office: (217) 241-1639. Cell: (217) 899-7389.
