Contractors Find Work in More Parts of the Country Construction employment expanded in two-thirds of all states in January as the industry showed signs of emerging from a six-year slump, according to an analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America of Labor Department data. Association officials cautioned however that the industry’s recovery remains fragile and
that current and looming federal budget cuts threaten to drag down construction employment in numerous states. “These results show that contractors are finding work in more parts of the country than they have for many months,” said Ken Simonson, the association’s chief economist. “Further gains appear likely
but could be derailed if lawmakers continue to make indiscriminate cuts to key construction and infrastructure programs.” From January 2012 to January 2013, 24 states and the District of Columbia added construction jobs, 25 shed workers and one — Wisconsin — had no change. New Glades Span to Boost Water Flow EVERGLADES NATIONAL PARK, Fla. (AP) Interior Secretary Ken Salazar was on hand at the opening of a new $81 million bridge intended to increase water flowing into Everglades National Park. The one-mile bridge is along Tamiami Trial in Miami-Dade County. Salazar said it’s one of the largest construction projects in National Park Service history. Officials say the bridge will increase water flow by 92 percent into northeast Shark River Slough. The project also will boost the amount of water in some 104,000 acres of the eastern section of the park and make the flow reflect natural seasonal depth changes. The bridge project was approved in 2000 but encountered a series of planning and legal challenges. Officials say construction sped up after an infusion of federal stimulus money. Lots of giveaways were available to the attendees and some absolutely incredible chicken, pork and sausage hot off the grille or the rotisserie with all the sides for lunch.
Talking about the big Vermeer grinder on display are Corey Vander Molen (L), sales manager, Vermeer MidSouth, and Johnnie Roland Big John’s Tree Service, Flowood, Miss.
The staff of Vermeer MidSouth transformed their spacious shop area at the Jackson, Miss., location into a dining area for two straight days — and kept their customers very well fed.
The directional drilling demos were a big hit at the event and included a hands-on-demo of a Vermeer D36x50 Series II NAVIGATOR horizontal directional drill, which utilizes a 140 hp (104 kW) John Deere Power Tech engine.
Vac-Tron and Vermeer representatives provide a complete machine walkaround of a Vermeer LP555 DT vacuum excavator powered by Vac-Tron (LR) for Danny Jones and Bill Watkins, Deviney Construction Co., Jackson, Miss.; Cody Wells, Vac-Tron product manager, Florida; and Tommy Wren, Vermeer MidSouth, Jackson, Miss.
They call Mike White, Vermeer MidSouth, one of the best drilling specialists in the area, and he was “in his element” as he provided ongoing demonstrations of the Vermeer directional drill units. Denny Vander Molen (C), owner of Vermeer MidSouth, greets his customers who turned out to join him for lunch including Frank Powell (L), Powell’s Construction, Columbia, Miss.; and Charles Fountain, Cable Man Inc., Biloxi, Miss.
More than happy to be cooking for their guests at the two-day open house (L-R) are Bill Giles, a friend of Vermeer MidSouth; Martin Shannon and Todd Johnson,Vermeer MidSouth.
Discussing the newest advances in directional drilling techniques (L-R) are Ben Simpson, Bancorp South, Jackson, Miss.; Denny Vander Molen, Vermeer MidSouth; Wayne Moody, Moody Construction, Louisville, Miss.; and Ron Hendrix, also of Bancorp South.

jumped to the top ranking for percentage of new construction jobs (9.4 percent, 1,200 jobs); followed by North Dakota (9.0 percent, 2,500 jobs); Hawaii (8.0 percent, 2,300 jobs); Alaska (7.2 percent, 1,200 jobs) and Washington (6.0 percent, 8,200 jobs). Texas (28,500 jobs, 5.0 percent) added the most new construction jobs over the past 12 months, followed by California (17,600 jobs, 3.0 percent) and Washington. Among states losing construction jobs during the past year, Arkansas lost the highest percentage (minus 10.5 percent, minus 5,100 jobs), followed by Rhode Island (minus 8.0 percent, minus 1,300 jobs); Montana (minus 7.2 percent, minus 1,700 jobs) and South Dakota (minus 6.4 percent, minus 1,400 jobs). Illinois lost the most jobs (minus 9,800 jobs, minus 5.0 percent); followed by Virginia (minus 7,500 jobs, minus 4.2 percent); Ohio (minus 5,200 jobs, minus 2.8 percent) and Arkansas. Simonson noted that 34 states and D.C. added construction jobs between December and January, while employment slipped in 14 states and held steady in two states. Wyoming had the largest percentage increase (4.6 percent, 1,000 jobs); followed by New York (4.2 percent, 13,000 jobs). New York added the largest number of jobs, by far — probably reflecting recovery work from Hurricane Sandy. Alaska and South Dakota had no change in construction employment over the month, while 14 states lost jobs, with Arkansas having the steepest percentage drop (minus 5.0 percent, minus 2,300 jobs); followed by Kansas (minus 4.0 percent, minus 2,200 jobs). Arkansas lost the largest number of jobs for the month; followed by Kansas and Pennsylvania (minus 2,200 jobs, minus 1.0 percent). “Construction spending has been rising for two full years but contractors have been cautious about adding workers until they knew the upturn would last,” Simonson explained. “In 2013, both residential and private nonresidential construction should rise enough to offset a further slowdown in public work, and contractors will be looking for more workers.” Association officials said the cuts in federal funding for construction triggered both by the so-called sequestration that took effect earlier this month and by spending bills now advancing in Congress would fall hardest on construction employers in states that have a large federal government presence. They urged lawmakers to address out-of-control entitlement spending instead of making disproportionate cuts to funding for essential infrastructure and military projects. “Canceling construction investments will ultimately worsen the deficit by undermining the nation’s growth and competitiveness,” said Stephen E. Sandherr, the association’s chief executive officer. “Meanwhile, the burden falls unfairly on states that host large military facilities, as well as states with extensive federal lands, research and energy installations.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

John Deere’s 250,000th Backhoe Rolls Off Assembly Line
(L-R) are Diane Bench, West Side Tractor sales vice president; Jim Kane, president and CEO; Dennis Redmond, senior vice president, operations west; Rock McHenry, senior vice president, chief customer officer; Jim Connell, director of business development/strategic partnerships; Todd Davisson, senior capital equipment buyer; and Mark Wambach, senior vice president, operations east.
The John Deere Construction & Forestry Division marks a production milestone with the completion of its 250,000th backhoe loader at the Dubuque Works factory on March 1. The model 310SK backhoe loader was purchased by Phoenix-based NPL Construction Co., which took delivery of the machine at a special ceremony at the Dubuque Works facility. “Backhoes have been our bread and butter since the first model rolled off the line over 40 years ago,” said Byron Taylor, plant manager at the John Deere Dubuque Works. “Our employees, many of which have had a hand in backhoe assembly since the beginning, are proud to meet this milestone.” John Deere Worldwide Construction & Forestry President Michael J. Mack joined employees and NPL Construction Co. at the Dubuque Works factory to celebrate the 250,000th milestone. “The piece of equipment we are recognizing today is only a single representation of the long line of backhoe models that have evolved right here in this factory,” said Mack. “It is a testament to the innovation and quality engineering we at John Deere pride ourselves in thanks to insight and input from stakeholders at every stage of the supply chain, from engineer, to line worker, to customer.” The John Deere 310SK backhoe loader, part of the KSeries, is the latest of more than 50 different backhoe models that have been produced at the Dubuque Works factory since 1971. The 310SK is part of the K-series backhoe loader line introduced in 2012. Powered by a certified Interim Tier IV/ Stage III B John Deere PowerTech engine, the 310SK
comes equipped with a five-speed powershift transmission that allows top speeds of 25 mph, with an alternative to upgrade to the smooth and efficient AutoShift option. The single loader lever with integrated electrohydraulic auxiliary control provides productivity and physical operator comfort, while standard features such as JDLink and Service ADVISOR Remote provide piece of mind. “This is an exciting milestone for John Deere and all of the construction dealers that work hard every day to get these machines out in the marketplace,” said West Side Tractor Sales Vice President Diane Benck. “It’s twice as exciting for West Side that one of our outstanding customers, NPL, has been a great part of this success and is receiving this symbolic backhoe.” NPL Construction Co., a nationally recognized leader in energy distribution construction, has worked with John Deere for more than a decade and will be adding the 250,000th backhoe to its fleet. As NPL’s preferred supplier, Deere was able to help develop a strategic sourcing approach that allows them to maintain and allocate fleets from coast to coast across the United States. “A good supplier is a quiet supplier, but a great supplier is one who inspires change,” said Jim Kane, president and chief executive officer at NPL Construction Co. “Deere’s commitment to innovation has kept us ahead of the competition. Their speed not only in delivery of equipment, but in keeping up with marketplace demand is unparalleled.” For more information, visit www.JohnDeere.com. Customer Benefits As well as the obvious environmental benefit from reduced emissions, the JCB Ecomax engine also offers customers improved torque throughout the rev range, coupled with noticeably reduced fuel consumption. JCB Ecomax engines can run on standard engine oils, unlike engines with after treatment solutions, which require a more expensive CJ4 oil to function correctly. The “no-after treatment approach” also allows for a recalibration option that allows JCB dealers to recalibrate the Ecomax engine to lower injection pressures and turn off the exhaust gas regeneration (EGR) function without any hardware changes. In effect, this recalibration takes the engine out of the EPA emissions tier system and opens it up for export to non-legislated countries that only offer lower quality fuels with higher sulphur content. This maximizes the residual value of used machines for customers and dealers alike without sacrificing the engine’s advanced features, according to the manufacturer. Because these engines do not require DPF or after-treatment, their dimensions and space claim on machines remain unchanged. This removes the need for any increase in chassis length or hood size maintaining the machines’ maneuverability and visibility. The JCB Ecomax engine range has been
the top of the range is the four-wheel-drive 4CX Super, coming in at 109 hp (81 kW) and also featuring the JCB Powershift transmission. All engines offer increased, usable torque over their Tier III predecessors and offer fuel savings of up to 5 percent. The launch of the JCB Ecomax engine coincides with the introduction of a host of other backhoe loader improvements. While the 3CX has a triple-gear pump to power the working ends of the machine, the 3CX Supers and 4CX Supers will now get, as standard, a 44 gpm (166 Lpm) variable-flow hydraulic pump. These pumps are configured to perfectly match hydraulic flow and pressure to the demands placed on the system, yielding up to 6 percent fuel efficiency improvement on

Tier IVi range, JCB also has launched its new JCB Advanced EasyControl, which offers many of the same features as JCB EasyControl, while incorporating the loader controls into the righthand seat controller. A new in-cab monitor is standard on all models, reporting fuel consumption and also allowing operators to bypass daily checks by automatically reporting any fluid levels that are below acceptable levels. Overall, this new range of backhoe loaders gives JCB customers a broader choice of machines to perfectly meet their versatile application and sector requirements, all while lowering running and ownership costs. top of improved efficiency already achieved by the Ecomax engine itself. The new variable-flow pump also results in lower lever efforts, reduced noise levels and rapid control response for up to 30 percent faster cycle times. JCB also has expanded the types of hydraulic controls offered by its backhoe range. All machines will have JCB’s Classic Controls (mechanical style) to operate the back end as standard, while the 3CX Super and 4CX Super will see two additional control options. With JCB Easycontrol, the excavator is controlled via two seat-mounted joysticks, giving the operator the same feel and feedback as the classic control, but with the added benefits of low lever efforts and short throws. Lift & Place Loadall JCB’s Loadall telescopic handlers will feature the Ecomax engine in either 74 or 109 hp models. The 74 hp engine, powering the 506-36 and 507-42, produces 6 percent more torque and 5 percent more power at low revs than the previous Tier III engine. This results in comparative performance with reduced fuel consumption. The larger units in the range — the 50942, 510-56 and 512-56 — are all powered with the 109 hp engine. Customers taking these machines will see an average 15 percent increase in torque and 10 percent boost to low rev power. Contractor Surmounts Downtown Demolition Challenges
Independence Excavating, Independence, Ohio, was one of the primary demolition contractors.
The first-of-its kind Cleveland Medical Mart (MMCC) with 12,200 tons (11,067 t) of steel and more than 24,000 steel beams make the largest project in downtown Cleveland, Ohio history. When completed in the fall of 2013, the $465 million facility will consist of a four-story aboveground medical mart as well as a 230,000 sq. ft. (21,368 sq m) underground convention center with 60,000 sq. ft. (5,574 sq m) of meeting rooms and a 32,000 sq. ft. (2,973 sq m) grand ballroom. Nearly 100 tenants, including health care providers, medical device manufacturers, health care educational institutions and health care technology companies have already signed up for space in the new MMCC. As managed by Merchandise Mart Properties Inc., Chicago, the project is working to gain LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. MPPI has completed one of the largest LEED projects in the world at Chicago’s Merchandise Mart. Five buildings were demolished last year to make room for the new 1 million sq. ft. facility. The five included a parking garage, Sportsman’s Restaurant, the Court Annex Building, the Chicago Title Building and the eight-story 113 Building, all in Cleveland’s central business district. Promptly at 6:00 a.m. on Jan. 3, 2011, crews fired up demolition
machines and began work. Demolition remained on schedule and was completed under an aggressive schedule, despite the wind, cold, snow and rain that a Cleveland winter and spring can bring. More than the five aboveground buildings needed to be

the building. Independence Excavating, Independence, Ohio, was one of the primary demolition contractors. “Our main function was the demolition of the existing convention center,” said Ed Wilk, general superintendent with Independence. “At one time we had some 25 to 27 major excavators down there and 40 to 50 workers. We had a subcontractor helping us on some of the demolition, like the 113 Building and the small parking garage and the Sportsman’s Restaurant. “There was some demolition done on the existing public auditorium,” Wilk said. “Part of that had to come down to make way for the new project. And then the convention center demo was probably minus 30 feet below finished grade,” he added. Richard Wilk, Ed’s son and Independence’s superintendent for the demolition, said the contractor employed several hammers for the huge demolition project. “We had a John Deere 450 with a hammer on it and we had a Hitachi 850 with an Allied hammer on it,” said Richard. “We had several Bobcats with hammers and two or three other excavators with hammers.” The Hitachi 850 was fitted with an Allied/Rammer Model 7013 hammer, a 16,000-ft.-lb.-class machine. The 7013 model is the largest hammer Allied sells, and it requires a carrier in the 132,000 to 220,500 lb. (59,874 to 100,017 kg) class. The next smaller hammer is see DEMOLITION page 76

Equipment Lease Finance Confidence Levels Off in March The Equipment Leasing & Finance Foundation (the Foundation) released the March 2013 Monthly Confidence Index for the Equipment Finance Industry (MCI-EFI) March 21. Designed to collect leadership data, the index reports a qualitative assessment of both the prevailing business conditions and expectations for the future as reported by key executives from the $725 billion equipment finance sector. Overall, confidence in the equipment finance market is 58.0, a slight decrease from the February index of 58.7, reflecting a leveling off in industry participants’ optimism after two consecutive increases. When asked about the outlook for the future, MCI survey respondent Valerie Hayes Jester, president, Brandywine Capital Associates Inc., said, “In the short term we see continued demand for equipment at a lessened pace than we did in the fourth quarter of 2012. Until the issues in Washington regarding the budget are resolved, we don’t expect the economy to move forward at a pace that sustains strong demand for equipment acquisition.” March 2013 Survey Results: The overall MCI-EFI is 58.0, a decrease from the February index of 58.7. • When asked to assess their business con-

Crushing, Screening & Recycling Section Tenn. Firm Eyes Power, Mobility; Finds Both in Sandvik By Brenda Ruggiero CEG CORRESPONDENT
The purchase of a new Sandvik DX800 drill has proven to be a wise choice for Brent Coleman, owner of Design Blasting Services LLC in Murfreesboro, Tenn. “It’s been fantastic,” Coleman said. “It’s the only true purpose built top hammer drill rig that can rotate on its superstructure. You can swing the entire cab 180 degrees, which allows for more maneuverability. It’s much more versatile and has substantially more power than drills of the same size or same supposed class. It’s been a very good machine.” Coleman explained that he originally purchased the drill because of its versatility. He wanted something that had the power of a larger machine but was still maneuverable. “We had a project just a month before I bought it,” he said. “It was paying extremely good money, but we could not get the machine into the area where the contractor wanted it. It ended up taking us a week to do it — they would have to build us ramps and we would have to pull in and out. It was a painstaking process, and I just kept thinking that if I had that drill by now, all we’d have to do is swing over to the side, and we’d have this thing knocked out in a day. “The rod changer system on the DX800 also is much faster than the carousel design that many drills use,” Coleman continued. “The boom reach of the machine coupled with the ease of use of the rod changer makes getting a shot drilled out much faster. And right now, it’s getting almost 40 percent better fuel economy — gallons per hour — than any other drill we’ve got.” Coleman said that his company has used the drill on four or five

The machine was sold to Design Blasting Services by Dave Parker, an account manager for ASC Construction Equipment USA Inc. Based in Chattanooga, Tenn., Parker works the southeast corner of Tennessee and parts of North Georgia in representing Volvo Construction Equipment in addition to the Sandvik drill product line. “The solutions I am able to offer with the Sandvik drill product line have proven to be second to none,” Parker said. Coleman said that he’s rented drills for the past few years to handle his company’s projects. “When we were going to purchase a machine, for it to be our first machine and something that costs this much money, it had to be able to do a lot of things very well. The Sandvik can go into a quarry and drill five-inch holes “The boom reach of the machine coupled with no problem, just like a with the ease of use of the rod changer makes much larger machine would be able to do. Superior Trailblazer Conveyor Offers Quick Setup Time Superior Industries’ Trailblazer conveyor enables crews to set up or take down in as little as two hours. That’s a significant time savings over both transfer conveyors, which contain multiple pieces, and stationary groundline conveyors, which require days or even weeks for setup and tear down. The versatility of the Trailblazer conveyor makes it ideal for a variety of applications and industries including aggregate, mining, recycling, waste handling and bulk processing. It includes 500-ft. (152 m) of fully belted and assembled groundline-style conveyor that folds up in an accordion style to easily transport on an attached 84-ft. (25.6 m) trailer. Providing 500-ft. in a one-load, towable package makes installation as easy as determining a starting point and marking the destination. Once marked, the truck driver moves forward, and a crew of two to four unloads the conveyor. The crew inserts the supports as the conveyor takes shape, sets take-ups and attaches the conveyor’s hopper. For added productivity, the hopper can be placed at any location along the conveyor. The Trailblazer conveyor’s accordion design not only allows for easier transport, but it also provides greater length with less set-up time. With a length of 60 to 80 ft. (18 to 24 m) for an average transport conveyor, it would take up to eight of them to equal the same 500-ft. stretch of the Trailblazer con-

veyor. Those other conveyors also would require eight belts to maintain, eight drives to power and eight transfer points. Connecting points can become spillage zones and greasing points. Eliminating them
not only decreases the amount of spillage, but also the number of areas that require supports. That, in turn, significantly reduces downtime for maintenance. Further enhancing efficiency and produc-
tivity is Superior’s Navigator return trainer. Used to provide continuous belt alignment, the return roller from the company’s components division maintains tracking and avoids material buildup that can cause costly downtime. Hinges provide belt flexibility to easily accommodate variations in grade, and a 50 hp (37 kW) system ensures smooth travel at any incline. Trailblazer conveyors are fully customizable and can be designed to various lengths and with additional components to fit a customer’s specifications. Standard belt sizes are 36 or 42 in. (91 or 107 cm) wide by 500 ft. long. Capacity limits range from 1,000 to 1,200 tph (907 to 1,088 t) of 100 lbs. per cu. ft. density material, with a belt speed of up to 400 ft. (122 m) per minute. The Trailblazer conveyor also is engineered and equipped with safety in mind. Its towable package includes a fifth wheel hitch, brakes and directional lights. Transport straps and pull-pins ensure that each conveyor section comes off the chassis one at a time, and help guide it safely onto supports. Bolt-together guard rails easily pin into place. In addition, to ensure safety during set up and take down, Superior’s team provides conveyor operators with complete training on the system. Doosan DXB130H, DXB190HBreakersIncrease Productivity The Doosan DXB130H and DXB190H hydraulic breakers feature an energy recovery system that increases strike power for maximum productivity. The nitrogen-powered breakers are equipped with an upper/lower suspension system that isolates the power unit from the housing, making it an ideal fit for a variety of demanding applications, according to the manufacturer. Delivering up to 600 blows per minute, the 2,822-lb. (1,280 kg) DXB130H is designed for use with excavators in the 16.5 to 24 ton (15 to 22 t) weight range, specifically the Doosan DX180LC, DX190W and DX210W. Rated in the 3,000 ft.-lb. impact energy class, the DXB130H requires a hydraulic flow rate of between 23.8 and 37 gal. (90 and 140 L) per minute. The 3,698-lb. (1,677 kg) DXB190H is designed for use with excavators in the 23 to 34 ton (21 to 31 t) weight range, which includes the DX225LC, DX235LCR, DX255LC and DX300LC Doosan excavators. The DXB190H is rated in the 6,000 ft.-lb. impact energy class and requires a hydraulic flow rate of between 31.7 and 47.5 gal. (120 and 180 L) per minute. The DXB190H is engineered with Doosan’s two-speed control, which also is available on the DXB260H breaker. With two speeds, the DXB190H breaker frequency can be manually adjusted between low and high frequency settings. This allows the operator to match the
breaker impact rate to the working conditions for optimized productivity. The energy recovery system captures the piston’s rebound energy and uses it to increase strike power, maximizing performance. At the same time, the main control valve system optimizes strike power. Blank-fire protection is standard on both the DXB130H and the DXB190H, and is accomplished by using a cushion of oil at the base of the piston, which reduces the metal-to-metal contact in case of a blank fire situation. The breakers’ suspension system extends excavator work group life by absorbing harmful vibrations and stress waves. Also, a main valve design reduces hydraulic pressure peaks that can reduce pump life, crack excavator work group welds and cause system overheating. The cradle-mounted grease station delivers continuous grease flow, reducing bushing and tool wear while minimizing maintenance costs and downtime. The DXB130H and DXB190H breakers also come with a mounting cap, auxiliary hydraulic hoses, two moil points, toolbox and a nitrogen checking device. A one-year limited warranty also comes standard. In addition to the general purpose moil, working tools available for the DXB130H and DXB190H include a blunt tool, a chisel and a pyramidal or “nail” point. For more information, visit www.doosanequipment.com.

those options were on the drill. Brent’s confidence in Sandvik has proven to be well-founded because of the high production and availability of the drill.” Coleman started Design Blasting Services LLC in 2008, basically out of necessity. “I had been working for my father since I was really young, and would help him during the summer months,” he said. “While other kids were going on vacation and enjoying their summers out of school, I pretty much worked. I went to college, and when I got out, I went back to work for my dad. We stayed pretty busy until 2008, when pretty much every industry really slowed down. We just didn’t have the work, and there wasn’t anything to do. It wasn’t that we weren’t getting the jobs and they were going to someone else. There just wasn’t anything to do. I pretty much decided that I was going to either go work for a larger company as a blaster, or I

could start on my own. I had basically no overhead, and I had some money saved up, so I could pay myself a small salary until it built itself up. That was four-and-a-half years ago, and here we are today.” For much of that time, employees included Coleman and one blaster. Today, he has 10 employees, including his younger brother, Ryan. The company specializes in
drilling and blasting for quarries, site prep projects, road work and blasting for underground utilities. Their work is mainly focused in and around mid-Tennessee. “Our approach is that we want to be more specialized,” Coleman said. “As with Nashville and other cities, areas are growing so much that there’s not really any blasting any more that’s wide open. You have to be extremely safe, and you’ve got to be fast.” Coleman is looking toward possibly purchasing another drill in the near future. “This year has started off really well,” he said. “I think maybe by the end of the year, we’ll be ready to take one of the rental machines back and purchase another drill.” For more information on Design

Tips on How to Choose the Best Telehandler Attachment By Brian Boeckman SPECIAL TO CEG
Telehandlers provide a convenient way to move many types and sizes of loads. When properly selected, a variety of attachments that fit on the end of the telehandler boom can enhance the versatility and performance of these machines. Determining the optimum attachment for a particular application requires a thorough understanding of the load you are moving. That means asking a number of questions: What are the width, length and height of the load? Is it palletized for forks, or will the load require a sling? How heavy is the load, and where is its center of gravity? Answers to these questions will direct operators to the attachment best suited to perform the task at hand. Common to most job sites are standard carriages that enable operators to pick and place an assortment of materials, from pallets of concrete block to loads of lumber. They typically come in a variety of widths (JLG offers 50, 60, and 72 in. [127, 152 and 183 cm] widths), so carriages should be selected to accommodate the width of the load. Fork length should also be selected to accommodate the length of the load. JLG offers 48-, 60-, and 72-in. [122, 152 and 183 cm] forks as well as a 90-in. (228 cm) fork extension for longer loads. In addition to width and fork length, carriages vary according to their ability to tilt forward and aft as well as side to side. Standard carriages provide the operator with the ability to tilt
the forks forwards and backwards. Side-tilt carriages tilt side to side for more precise placement and retrieval, while side-shift carriages make it possible to slide a load 4 in. (10 cm) to the right or left during placement by moving the forks side to side on the carriage. This is especially helpful in warehouse applications or applications that require load retrieval or placement through a window. Another carriage option is the swing carriage, which rotates up to 90 degrees to the right or left, allowing operators to swing and place longer loads through windows and in confined areas, or where exact positioning is required. In addition, a dual fork positioning carriage provides the ability to adjust the position of each fork independently, allowing the operator to handle a variety of palletized loads without having to leave the cab. Buckets provide operators with another useful tool. A standard utility or material bucket is an effective and efficient tool to scoop and carry loose materials around the job site, including gravel, dirt, mulch and other small debris. To tackle larger tasks, including clean-up associated with natural disasters, many telehandler manufacturers offer grapple buckets, which feature a hydraulic grapple arm that clamps down to grab bulky materials and secure the load. Truss booms offer a means to move suspended loads and are primarily used to set trusses, frames, and beams for wood and steel building construction. Available with or without a winch, the booms come in dif-
ferent sizes and provide the operator with extra reach capabilities without requiring a larger machine. Suspended loads also can be handled with a lifting hook. The hook slips onto the carriage forks, adding versatility to the carriage and allowing operators to lift awkward objects, like septic tanks and generators without removing the carriage. Finally, personal work platforms extend the capabilities of the telehandler and improve job site efficiency and productivity by lifting material and persons to working heights when there is no safer alternative. The forkmounted attachment can move brick layers and mortar from one level of scaffolding to the next, lift inspectors for roof inspections, elevate electricians and spools of cable to transformers, and lift maintenance workers to replace parking lot lights. To gain the full benefit of each of these attachments, operators are advised to answer the questions originally posed in this article and review the load chart that accompanies each piece of equipment. In addition, it makes sense to consult with the local rental store or telehandler dealer to ensure the best match of attachment to the defined scope of work. By taking these simple steps, operators will more fully appreciate the versatility of the telehandler as a job site work tool, and its ability to meet a wide variety of jobs faster and with greater ease. Razorback Greenway Eyed to Boost Economic Development GREENWAY from page 1
Primarily off-road, it passes through these communities, taking advantage of undeveloped land and in some cases restoring and revitalizing underutilized urban landscapes. As a result residents may look forward to increased connectivity, a boost to economic development, and the area becoming a more attractive place to live and work. Chuck Flink, Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects (FASLA), president of Alta/Greenways, Durham, N.C., led the design team for their client, the Northwest Arkansas Regional Planning Commission. He has been involved in planning and designing Greenways for the Grand Canyon, the Miami River, Philadelphia’s Northern Delaware River Greenway, and the Little Sugar Creek Greenway in Charlotte, N.C. Flink described this Greenway as “one of the most unique regional trail projects in the United States.” Sixteen mi. of the Greenway have been funded by a $15 million grant from the Federal Highway Administration under the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) program. The Walton Family Foundation is contributing a $3.75 million grant, a 20 percent local match for the TIGER II grant. Flink described the unique design challenges of the project. “The project spans six different jurisdictions and requires the design team to obtain separate construction approvals from all of the communities,” he said. “Topography is one of the most important physical challenges. The karst landscape of northwest Arkansas has forced the design team to select a route and alignment for the trail that minimizes impact to the native environment. Consequently, significant portions of the trail will be built parallel or in close proximity to existing roads. “While some of the Greenway construction is straightforward and involves traditional building techniques, certain elements of the project have required and will require unique and specialized construction equipment and expertise in trail building,” he went on. To offer that particular expertise, Boulder Construction, Fayetteville, Ark., is working on the project. “Boulder Construction is one of the firms involved in the project, and its president Ron Troutman is one of the most experienced trail builders in northwest Arkansas and has
“This project has a high degree of difficulty as it runs alongside our creeks and streams. The terrain is extremely rugged in these areas and the nature of the construction lends itself to daily challenges of dewatering and rock excavation. Boulder has built more than 20 miles of trail within the northwest Arkansas region and our knowledge of the process is extensive due to this experience.” Jason Baxter Boulder Construction

employed a variety of heavy-construction and specialized equipment to build sections of the Greenway project. At times, working in tight places with limited access presents a challenge that can only be resolved with creative solutions. Ron and his team at Boulder Construction Company are masters of the craft,” Fink said.
Boulder Construction, was founded more than 10 years ago and specializes in trails, parks, civil work and various commercial projects. The company bid the first two segments of the federally funded portion of the Greenway, these being Section 7 (Horsebarn Trail), for which it is general contractor, and Section 9 (Promenade Trail), where it is serving as contractor for the general contractor, Arco Excavation and Paving Inc., Tontitown, Ark.
The company also is part of the development/design team for the Clear Creek Trail in the Fayetteville/Johnson communities and has now commenced construction as general and construction manager on the Mud Creek portion of the trail. “Ron Troutman began conversations regarding the privately funded Clear Creek Trail segment four years ago. The original federal funding was from the TIGER II grant of 2008 and design, easement acquisition, permitting and ground proofing caused construction for the Greenway to begin in May this year,” said Boulder Construction Project Manager Jason Baxter. With 74 to 100 employees on the job, the company is currently working on three sections of the Greenway and are about to bid another. The Clear Creek Trail will be completed in 2013. Boulder Construction utilized all terrain cranes to erect the bridges on the projects. They also will be installing horizontal piles along a bluff to suspend portions of the Clear Creek Trail above the creek. Their fleet of equipment for the project also includes Caterpillar excavators, Bomag rollers, John Deere dozers, Volvo and Case backhoes, ram hoes and trenchers and Takeuchi skid steers. Full size excavators have been used to excavate otherwise unreachable extreme hillsides and the ram hoes are necessary to excavate the weathered creek bed granite the trail parallels. “This project has a high degree of difficulty as it runs alongside our creeks and streams. The terrain is extremely rugged in these areas and the nature of the construction lends itself to daily challenges of dewatering and rock excavation. Boulder has built more than 20 miles of trail within the northwest Arkansas region and our knowledge of the process is extensive due to this experience. In addition, the Greenway project has a very thorough team and, other than field conditions dictating slight deviations from the original design, we have encountered no problems,” Baxter said. In mentioning Boulder’s thanks to Alta Planning, the Walton Family Foundation, and the Northwest Arkansas Regional Planning Commission, Baxter also extended appreciation to the community “for its cooperation across many cities to bring a world class trail to northwest Arkansas.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) HCEA Announces Corporate New Memberships The Historical Construction Equipment Association (HCEA), a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the history of the construction, dredging and surface mining equipment industries, announced nine new corporate memberships. Formed in 1925 through the merger of The Holt Manufacturing Company and C. L. Best Tractor Company, Caterpillar is a leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment. Along with these product lines whose history is preserved by the HCEA, Cat also is a world leader in diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines, diesel generator sets, and dieselelectric locomotives. Through a 50/50 joint venture with Navistar, Caterpillar also produces heavy-duty over-the-road trucks. A. A. Will Corporation was founded in 1886 by Alex Will and is now under its fifth generation of Will family ownership and is the oldest family-operated construction
firm in the greater Boston area. It has progressed from horse carts for hire and delivery of fill, firewood and manure to foundation construction, underpinning, top-down building construction, site development, landfill construction and remediation, and heavy civil construction. Stone Products Inc. is a leading wholesaler of new and used mining and aggregate equipment in Canton, Ohio. Founded in 1970, it serves the entire United States and Canada, as well as parts of South America, Central America, Mexico, the Caribbean Islands and Asia. Supreme-DSC Dredge LLC was formed in November, 2011, through the combination of cutter and suction dredge manufacturer DSC Dredge LLC and clamshell dredge builder Supreme Dredge & Processing LLC. It has plants in Pennsylvania, Mississippi and Michigan, and provides sales and service in more than 40 countries. O & G Industries is one of the largest construction materials and
services companies in the northeastern United States. Founded in 1923 and operating under its third generation of family management, this Torrington, Conn., company is both a major building and heavy contractor and a producer of aggregates, asphalt, concrete, masonry and architectural stone. Columbus Equipment Company was founded in April 1952 when founder Willis Early purchased his employer, Carroll & Edwards. Headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, it represents Komatsu, Mooroka, Takeuchi, Atlas Copco and Kubota from 10 locations across the Buckeye State. Eagle Crusher Company of Galion, Ohio, pioneered the structural steel frame jaw crusher in the early 1900s and produced its first portable hard rock crusher in 1928. It acquired the Austin-Western and Diamond Iron Works lines of aggregate equipment in the 1970s, and continues under its third generation of private ownership as a leading
innovator of high-volume portable crushing equipment. Rhoads Industries is a heavy metal fabricator and shipbuilder. Founded in 1938, it is based in Philadelphia, Pa., with facilities in the former Philadelphia Navy Yard. Capone Brothers Inc., of Canton, Mass., is a highway contractor founded in 1968. U.S. Embassy in Djibouti Among Best Construction Projects in ’12 The U.S. Embassy in Djibouti was one of the most significant construction projects of 2012, the Associated General Contractors of America announced. As a result, the project’s contractor, Quantico, Va.-based Caddell Construction Co. Inc. was one of 17 firms to receive the association’s Alliant Build America Award. “These projects are shining examples of the construction industry at its finest, demonstrating tremendous skill, hard work and steadfast determination,” said Joseph H. Jarboe, the association’s president and senior vice president of Bethesda, Md.based Clark Construction Group. “The winners are setting the standard by which all construction projects should be judged.” Caddell Construction completed construction of a new U.S. Embassy in Djibouti, a dangerous and turbulent working environment, on time. The team delivered cutting-edge technology and met strict security protocols. Special attention to safety was required on this site, as the team encountered 120+ F temperatures, malaria
and one of the highest concentrations of poisonous snakes in the world. The Caddell Construction team was recognized for their commitment to investing in the local community through the hiring and training of local workers. The new embassy provides a safe and comfortable environment for U.S. diplomatic personnel and their important mission. The Alliant Build America Awards recognize the nation’s most significant construction projects. A panel of judges, representing all areas of construction, evaluated an impressive number of submissions this year, assessing each project’s complexity, use of innovative construction techniques and client satisfaction, among other criteria. The awards, which were announced during the association’s annual convention in Palm Springs, are considered by many to be the most prestigious recognition of construction accomplishments in the United States. Myron Bowling Holds Two-Day Auction in Tuscaloosa
M
yron Bowling Auctioneers Inc. held a huge two-day sale in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on March 20 and 21 selling machines and support equipment for RaCON Inc. One of the largest one-owner auctions so far this year, more than 550 lots were sold. Day one of the sale featured trucks, trailers, light vehicles, farm tractors and related items. Day two brought out more than 300 pieces of construction equipment, with some models as recent as 2012. (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)
Myron Bowling scans the crowd for one more bid before dropping the gavel on another excavator. Getting ready to roll on day two of the sale (L-R) are Myron Bowling Auctioneers Tom Bowling, Myron Bowling and Greg Hengehold. Watching and monitoring the pricing of the machines as they were being sold (L-R) are Gilley Key, ServisFirst Bank, Birmingham, Ala.; and RaCON Inc. owners, Benton Andrews and Keith Andrews.
Making the trek from New England to bid on several machines of interest are Bob Cairns (L) and Jerry Cairns, George Cairns & Sons, Windham, N.H.
Doing a test run of a Deere 350D LC are Todd Summers (in cab) and his son, Levi Summers, Summers Enterprise, Masonville, Iowa. Looking over some of the dozers before they went on the auction block is Mark Swedlund, Mid Country Machinery, Fort Dodge, Iowa.
Judging by the size of the crowd and machine variety, this was definitely not your average one-owner construction equipment auction.

the Allied/Rammer Model 4511, which is a 12,000-ft.-lb. machine that requires a carrier of 88,200 lbs. (40,007 kg) and up. Terry Tomasko, equipment superintendent of Independence, said the Allied/Rammer Model 7013 hammer was selected “based on our past experience and future needs for demolishing thick concrete.” One of the demolition tasks at the Medical Mart complex involved demolishing and removing a concrete floor that ranged from 2.5 to 5 ft. (.76 to 1.5 m) thick. “They had some massive concrete that had to be demolished (at the Medical Mart site),” said Ed Wilk. “It needed some big guns to get it down and get it out. That’s the only hammer we could use on the thick concrete. Once you find something that works, you go with it. The production of the Model 7013 hammer was very good. To my knowledge it met all of our expectations.” Ed Wilk said Independence planned a sequence of events to demolish the thick concrete floor, which supported a retaining wall that needed to be preserved. Alternating sections of the floor were hammered out while some sections remained to support the retaining wall. Saw cutting came first, followed by the Allied/Rammer 7013. The floor sections being demolished were on the order of 35 to 40 ft. (11 to 13 m) wide, by 60 or 70 ft. (18 to 21 m) long. “We’d hammer out one section, skip 10 or 12 feet, then take out another section,” said Ed Wilk. Richard Wilk said the Allied/Rammer 7013 was also used to demolish part of the parking garage. It was a cast-in-place concrete parking garage with the convention center underneath it. Again, the Allied/Rammer 7013 had no problem taking down the heavy beams and columns in the cast-in-place concrete parking deck. “The Allied/Rammer 7013 exceeded our expectations and helped us complete demolition on time,” said Tomasko. The MMCC will use 20 to 25 percent of the crushed concrete on site for stone fill, sidewalk and roadway bedding materials. The remainder will be used for local Cleveland projects. The goal is to recycle 95 percent of the construction and demolition material produced by the project. In addition to concrete, steel, aluminum, copper, reinforcing steel, brick, block, wood, gypsum, asphalt, plastic, cardboard and paper are all being recycled to help meet the 95 percent goal. MMCC plans to recover 190,000 cu. yd. (145,265 cu m) of dirt and topsoil and 124,000 cu. yds. (94,805 cu m) of recyclable

materials, leaving 6,000 cu. yds. (4,587 cu m) of waste. Ed Wilk said he has been involved in many projects in downtown Cleveland but not on this scale. “Working in downtown Cleveland is always a challenge because the rest of the world is trying to go forward while you are trying to build a building,” he said.
