Construction is nearing completion on a 23-acre sports complex in a Birmingham, Ala., suburb which will host state and regional tournaments throughout the Southeast. The Vestavia Hills Liberty Park project, which includes four full-size soccer, lacrosse and football fields, plus an additional warm-up area, will feature almost a dozen acres of green synthetic turf. “The city of Vestavia Hills has needed fields for some time, and the council was able to secure funding for them in the last two years,” explained Vestavia Hills Parks and Recreation Director Brian Davis. “They’ve been on the drawing board for about seven years. The overall growth of our city has necessitated the need for these additional fields.” The park is located approximately 3.5 see PARK page 48

Machinery Exports Gain in 2010; Top $16.4B The market for exports of U.S.-made construction machinery closed out 2010 with a gain of more than 28 percent compared to the previous year, for a total of $16.4 billion dollars’ worth of equipment sold worldwide, according to the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM). The AEM North American-based internation-

al trade group consolidates U.S. Commerce Department data with other sources into a quarterly export trends report. “Global trade is extremely important to our industry and export sales continue to sustain many companies as we still face a fragile domestic upturn,” said AEM Senior Vice President Al Cervero. “While these numbers are

positive we have to remember they follow a 2009 decline of more than 38 percent.” “It’s important to pass the pending free-trade agreements with Colombia, Korea and Panama to help manufacturers create more U.S. jobs by selling their products to international buyers,” he added. see EXPORTS page 12

Costly Move...

La. Agrees to Pay for Relocation of 150-Year-Old Oak BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) The state has agreed to pay $300,000 to move a massive, 150-year-old oak tree in Iberia Parish within the next few weeks in order to complete a service road along U.S. Highway 90. Bill Fontenot, a regional administrator of the state Department of Transportation and Development, said the department agreed not to cut down the tree — called “Mr. Al” by local residents — after several residents and the Optimist Club of New Iberia petitioned to save it. Fontenot told The Daily Iberian that the tree will be moved within 30 days, allowing the road project to be completed in the beginning of summer. “The decision to preserve the tree was made a couple of years ago when the project went out to bid,” Fontenot said. Officials considered cutting down the tree and building on either side of the tree, allowing it to obstruct the roadway. “It was decided by Louisiana DOTD at the time to allow the tree to remain and just have the service roads come to a dead end on either side of the tree,” he said. Fontenot said the idea to move the tree came from the efforts to save another giant oak, which supporters have dubbed the “Youngsville Heritage Oak,” from being destroyed due to obstructing the building of another roadway. Houston-based Environmental Design Inc. specializes in transplanting large trees and, according to Fontenot, has a 95 percent success rate in uprooting and replanting the trees in a manner to keep them intact and healthy. “Mr. Al” will be relocated near the off ramp of the intersection of U.S. 90 and Jefferson Terrace Boulevard, he said. “So we are optimistic about the survival of the tree and we look forward to it standing in its new location,” he said. “It’s a nice open space, it won’t interfere with traffic and it’s within a reasonable distance for the tree’s existing location.” “Mr. Al” was named by nearby resident Kelli Peltier in memory of her grandfather Al Jolet. Susan Hester Edmunds was president of the Optimist Club of New Iberia in 2008 and 2009 when locals rallied to save the tree. Each year the club promotes planting new trees, she said, and advocating saving the giant oak went along with the club’s message of environmental responsibility. “Certainly if we are charged with planting trees there is no reason we can’t try to keep one from being cut down,” Edmunds said. Edmunds said giant oaks are the signature part of what draws tourists to South Louisiana. Planting trees is practical, she said, adding that trees are proven to serve as protective wind barriers during hurricanes.

Henry Branscome Dies at Age 79 Mr. Branscome built the business into one of the largest multi-faceted heavy construction companies on the East Coast. He had thousands of devoted employees over the years as his business grew, constructing many of Virginia’s roads and Interstate highways. Stuart Patterson remembers the day 30 years ago when Henry Branscome hired him. “I was selling construction equipment and went to see him on a sales call,” Patterson recalled. “I made my pitch and Henry looked at me and said, ‘I’m not going to buy your equipment, but I want you to come work for me.’ That’s the kind of man he was. He takes people under his wing. He was my boss, but he was also my mentor.” Henry S. Branscome, 79, founder of Branscome Inc., died Feb. 17, surrounded by his wife and children while visiting Orange Lake, Fla., the family vacation home. Born in 1931 in Carroll County, Mr. Branscome came to Williamsburg in 1953 and in 1956 began what would be the first of many successful businesses, Henry S. Branscome Inc. Pete Henderson, now 89 and the founder of Henderson Inc., met Mr. Branscome when he first came to town. “I was working for a Richmond contractor building Dunbar –– today’s Eastern State Hospital,” Henderson recalled. “Henry was a one-man company. He and Lavelle lived in a little trailer near Five Forks. He had a front-end loader and a pickup truck to pull it. He’d hire himself out. Anything you asked him to do, he would do it.” Mr. Branscome built the business into one of the largest multi-faceted heavy construction companies on the East Coast. He had thousands of devoted employees over the years as his business grew, constructing many of Virginia’s roads and Interstate highways. “Business starters have to be tenacious,” said Gary Massie, a competitor and a friend. “But he was always a gentleman. I was very fortunate to know him and to compete with him. “Henry vertically integrated his business,” Massie explained. “He was a pioneer in drum-mix asphalt plants in the area. And because of it, he led in asphalt production.” Their two companies collaborated in the 1970s on Interstate 64. “Henry got the section from Exit 234 to Camp Peary. We got the section between exits 231 and 234.” On other projects, Massie’s firm would perform the utility work and grading, then subcontract Branscome to lay asphalt. After opening Henry Manufacturing Co., Mr. Branscome

designed and patented the concrete cyclone reclaimer, used by concrete companies worldwide. He developed Powhatan Shores and Banbury Cross, and was past owner of Olde Mill Golf Course. “He taught me the business,” Patterson said. “He never had anything bad to say about our competition or anyone. He built a terrific company by believing in the people in the business. The people at Branscome owe him a great deal of admiration for building the company that it is today.” The Colas Group acquired the company in 2001. “He wouldn’t sell to anyone who wouldn’t keep the management or the people intact,” Patterson said. “He wanted to keep the family together. A lot of entrepreneurs would not have done that.” An elder in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Mr. Branscome served in many capacities over the years. He donated much of his time and resources toward building the chapel where 600 local members worship today. He was especially fond of the youth, always willing to hire “just one more” who needed money for college or to help support a struggling family. He was well known in the business community for his generosity and tremendous work ethic. Left to cherish his memories are his wife of 59 years, Lavelle Martin Branscome; daughters, Jeanette Branscome Brady (Wayne), Judy Branscome Turman (Roy), Joyce Branscome Hockaday (Mark), and Jacqueline L. Branscome; his son, Henry S. Branscome II (Diane); his 17 beloved grandchildren: Jeremy Brady (Jenny), Annette Turman Turner (David), Roxanna Brady Woods (David), April Turman Bowman (Chad), Jason W. Brady (Norah), Audra Turman Jeppson (Levi), Amanda Brady Redfern (Ben), Samuel R. Turman, Justin C. Hockaday (Melissa), Jordan M. Hockaday, Ashley Brady Stewart (Caleb), and Cordy, Gussie, Henry S. “Happy” Branscome III, Doc, Peaches and Chismer Branscome; and 23 wonderful greatgrandchildren. Also surviving are his sister, Violet Nester of Williamsburg; and brother, Julius L. Branscome of Woodbridge. A viewing was held Feb. 20, at Nelsen Funeral Home; a funeral service was held the following day at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel, 2017 Newman Rd.

Multiquip Wins Two Contractor’s Choice Awards for 2010 Multiquip Inc. a manufacturer and supplier of products and solutions, has won two 2010 Contractor’s Choice Awards. Presented annually by Roads & Bridges magazine, the awards showcase 21 categories of the best products and equipment being offered to the marketplace. Only professionals using the products and equipment can cast votes for the winners. Multiquip received a Silver award in the Work-Zone Safety (Lights) category for its GloBug lighting systems, which makes jobs such as nighttime road repairs safer for both workers and motorists. Additionally, Multiquip won a Bronze award in the Concrete Pavers category for its SP706036/street pro road saw. The engineering of this saw greatly reduces operator strain and fatigue, while lessening the chance of back injury, according to the company. The Contractor’s Choice Awards were established by Roads & Bridges magazine in 2005 to allow contractor readership to pick the best equipment out on a job site. The recipients of the top three votes in each product category receive either a gold, silver or bronze award. For more information, visit http://www.Multiquip.com.

Birmingham, Ala.’s Highway’s Cost Estimate Grows BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) A new estimate shows that Birmingham’s 52-mi. (83.7 km) Northern Beltline will cost $4.7 billion to build. The Alabama Department of Transportation said the new estimate was developed in conjunction with the Federal Highway Administration, which is asking states to review major projects to account for cost overruns. The previous estimate for the beltline was $3.4 billion in late 2009. Proponents say the cost jump points to the need to get the beltline built as quickly as possible. Opponents say the new price tag should prompt a re-evaluation. Plans call for the new freeway to branch off Interstate 59 near the Jefferson-St. Clair County line and arc across north Jefferson County, crossing I-65 north of Gardendale and then dropping southwest.

Excellent Service the Key to Hills Machinery’s Success By Eric Olson CEG CORRESPONDENT

Jim and Adam Hills made a pretty gutsy move in 2010. Right in the middle of a slow economy, the two brothers and business partners decided to expand their three-year-old equipment business by opening a second location. With businesses falling victim to the recession right and left, particularly relatively new companies with little or no reputation in the marketplace, the move would seem to be extremely risky. Several months later, though, their bold initiative seems to be paying off as Hills Machinery is a thriving enterprise with a bright future. The Columbia, S.C.-based construction equipment dealership specializes in selling, renting and service and in its brief time in business, has managed to build its reputation as a trusted and reliable company. The brothers first opened the doors on their business in Columbia in September 2007. Almost exactly three years later, a second location of Hills Machinery was up and running in the Charleston area. “We were able to do that because we saw a good bit of economic improvement in 2010,” Jim Hills said. “We had been expanding and we are optimistic that 2011 may be a breakout year for us.” The opening of the Charleston shop also coincided with the fact that the company began carrying a complete line of Case construction equipment earlier in 2010. “As it turns out, there is a lot of Case machinery working in the Charleston area, so we wanted to make sure that we could be there to capitalize on that with our parts and service capabilities,” he said.

Hills Machinery has managed to weather the tough economy, Hills said, by changing its objectives to meet new market demands. “I think our company has kind of morphed two or three times, actually,” explained Hills, who has worked in the equipment business since 1994. “We started out mostly buying used equipment and trying to run a rental fleet like we had in the past at other companies, but we quickly found out that that was not going to last. As a result, we downsized our rental fleet and added about nine additional mechanics.” By re-focusing its attention on parts and service, Hills said the company was able to steadily gain more and more business. “We have really pushed the sale of aftermarket components for Caterpillar and we go heavily after the service work on nonCase product lines,” he added. “We carry about 80 percent of the available parts that Caterpillar manufactures for the after-market. That is everything from engine components to cylinders, filters, ground engaging tools, undercarriage, etc.” Jim Hills serves as company president and runs the Columbia operation, while Adam is vice president and proprietor of the Charleston shop. More than half of the firm’s approximately 20 employees work in the Columbia location, with the rest in Charleston, as well as one salesman in Greenville, N.C., an area that Jim Hills said is an untapped market. “We keep a few machines up there for rental and he is selling Case there, as well,” he said. Case actually approached Hills Machinery through a mutual contact, Hills said, after learning of the company’s strong commitment to service. see HILLS page 20

The sales for the Coastal area of South Carolina area are in the capable hands of Adam Hills (L) and Bret Diggett.

“The market simply hasn’t improved enough that we can depend solely on the sale of new machinery. Our strategy has been to bring new customers on board through the service part of the company and then when they do decide that they want to buy new or used equipment, we hopefully have established a trusting relationship where they view us as a partner.” Jim Hills David McLain (L) and Mike Cooper are excited to help the contractors along the coast with parts and service needs.

did not align with our core strategic plans,” said Stu Levenick, Caterpillar group president with responsibility for customer and dealer support. “We are pleased the management team will remain with the dealership and believe Jim Parker’s strong customerfocus makes him an ideal fit for this business. With this transition, Carter Machinery customers should expect to receive the same high level quality, service and support that they have come to expect from Carter Machinery and Caterpillar products,” Levenick added. The sale is expected to close in the first quarter of 2011 and is subject to appropriate regulatory reviews and approvals. “I am honored to be joining the Carter team and we expect there will be a seamless transition for customers as we look to continue to provide world class sales and product support for Caterpillar customers in Virginia and southeast West Virginia,” Parker said. McCann Industries Leader Outlines Goals as AED Chair McCann’s Way to WIN: Focus on What’s Important Now

Dennis Kruepke believes that if you don’t tell people what you expect, you won’t get it. That’s why his company is very transparent in communications with its employees. A weekly internal newsletter that includes a message from Dennis, as well as consistent weekly meetings with his senior management team, clearly articulated goals, and new-employee materials are among the ways McCann Industries’ president and CEO keeps everyone at the company informed. We were impressed with a nifty little card tucked inside a company orientation packet — it’s McCann’s WIN Card with seven directives for success: 1. Build lasting relationships with customers by exceeding expectations. 2. Communicate your ideas — Be a contributing team member. 3. ThinkSAFELY — Go home from work in the same condition you came. 4. Accept accountability & responsibility. 5. Use technology to continually improve the business. 6. Be positive & promote growth — Look out the windshield, not the rearview mirror. 7. Congratulations — Only good people ride the McCann bus.

The fact that Dennis Kruepke is the sort of man who keeps a list says a lot about who he is. It’s not a daily task list, it’s not a wish list or a shopping list, and no, it’s not a black list, either. Dennis keeps a list of important goals and accomplishments he is intentional about achieving during his lifetime, and while he’ll occasionally shares what’s been checked off so far, he’ll smile and give you a “no comment” reply if you want to know what’s still on that secret document. After all, one of the biggies on the list has just been fulfilled, though the job will take him a year to complete: Dennis Kruepke, president and CEO of McCann Industries, the Chicagoland Case dealer- ship based in Addison, Ill., was installed as AED’s 2011 Chairman on Jan. 28 during the AED Summit in Orlando. “One of my goals in life was to be Chairman of this organization,” said Dennis, “so it didn’t take me long to respond in a positive manner when the opportunity was presented.” A leader who’s very focused on setting and meeting goals, it wasn’t surprising to those who know Dennis that his warm and genuine speech at the Chairman’s Inaugural Breakfast would be concluded with an outline of four primary goals he has personally laid out for his year as Chairman. In a nutshell, Dennis intends to: (1.) Keep a continued and forceful focus on AED legislative priorities, which remains the No. 1

directive from members when surveyed; (2.) Find methods to harmonize AED’s workforce development and training programs with manufacturer-designed training, thus supporting manufacturers’ efforts rather than competing against them for distributor training dollars; (3.) Re-evaluate the AED “Tool Box,” identifying the AED products and services that benefit dealer members most, then strengthening them and eliminating those that are inefficient; and (4.) Balance the AED budget, ending 2011 for AED, he said, in a financially responsible and black position. “My goals cover large dealers and smaller dealers,” said Dennis. “We need to go back to the basics and make sure we have the right tools in the tool box. We need to add value for all dealers — I don’t want members to think that everything is going toward legislative; that’s not the intent here.” Recovery and Opportunities Dennis’ career has never deviated from the fine art of marketing and selling equipment, but, unlike the lives of many dealer principals born and raised in a distribution environment, his first 22 years in the industry were shaped in the manufacturing side of the business. It is with those experiences in his own tool box, as well as the perspective of a partner and top executive of a distributor company, that Dennis today assesses the current industry landscape and prospects for dealers. “The encouraging thing right now is that I am seeing more information, articles, and

statements that say the cycle has bottomed out, and that we’re beginning to recover,” Dennis said. “With that in mind, I say congratulations to the people who have been able to survive this; and in some cases, some individuals have even been able to prosper during this time. Many of us have had to make the difficult decision of right-sizing our businesses, and even as the market improves, these challenges are not over. I think we need to properly manage our businesses and continue to work within our

means so that as the economy recovers, we can be in a more advantageous position. “If we properly manage it, we should be able to recover some equity in our businesses that may have been lost, and we should be able to take care of our people, those who have sacrificed for us,” Dennis continued. “A lot of opportunities are going to present themselves — but with less overhead we should be able to respond quickly.” see KRUEPKE page 28

Up-to-Date Employee Training Keeps Hills Competitive

“For us, the attraction to Case was that they offered us a full product line — everything from compact to heavy equipment, asphalt equipment, dirt equipment, etc.,” he said. “So, we thought it was a pretty unique opportunity for an upstart business like ours to be able to take on a full blown OEM product line.” In addition to carrying Case, Hills Machinery also sells Caterpillar equipment and parts, as well as a line of Interstate trailers and accessories and Magnum Attachments. “I think that across the course of 2011, you will begin to see us add in some other product lines, as well,” Hills added. The company offers customers same-day parts delivery and on-site service 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Technicians at Hills Machinery undergo a rigorous training program and then update their education on a regular basis. “We have the guys take classes almost weekly online and when the manufacturers offer classes, we send them as often as we can. We also do that with our sales and parts people,” Jim Hills said. “Additionally, we have weekly conference calls within our various groups [sales, parts and service] where we all take part in a roundtable discussion on whatever course work we have covered that week.”

Hills said that he and his brother believe that by striving for excellence in the parts and service end of the business, they can attract more customers for the sales and rental end. “The market simply hasn’t improved enough that we can depend solely on the sale of new machinery,” he admitted. “Our strategy has been to bring new customers on board through the service part of the company and then when they do decide that they want to buy new or used equipment, we hopefully have established a trusting relationship where they view us as a partner.” Both locations of Hills Machinery are about the same size with around 12,000 sq. ft. of parts and service space on several acres. General Equipment’s 190C CUT-R-TACH Offers Solutions General Equipment Company’s 190C CUT-R-TACH rotary asphalt cutting attachment is specifically designed as a heavy-duty, high production solution to a wide range of asphalt cutting projects. The 190C clamps directly to the buckets of wheel/track type loaders and tractor loader backhoes without special tools, modifications or adapters. Its twin screw clamping mechanism guarantees a tight fit in both forward and reverse cutting directions, according to the manufacturer. A 19-in. (48 cm) diameter cutting blade is machined from a special service duty, alloy steel and yields a maximum asphalt cutting depth of 5-1/2 in. (14 cm). With a blade life in excess of 25,000 lineal ft. (7,620 m), it is field replaceable without disturbing bearings or seals. The CUT-R-TACH unit features unitized, welded steel plate construction that is reinforced at critical stress areas. It is capable of cutting up to 6,000 lineal ft. (1,829 m) per hour in high density asphalt and is a productive alternative to conventional sawing and jackhammering methods. In business for more than 50 years, General Equipment Co. is a family-owned manufacturer of earth augers, ventilation blowers, asphalt cutters and surface preparation equipment. Excavating Hydraulic Angle Broom Tool Ups Profits, Attachments Announced Productivity for Case Wheel Loaders Case Construction Equipment’s family of hydraulic angle broom attachments is designed to increase the utility of Case wheel loaders. Ranging in width from 96 to 120 in. (244 to 305 cm), the new angle brooms enable Case wheel loaders to sweep streets and parking lots, clean up job sites and remove snow from job sites. Angle broom models are available for Case 521D and E, 621D and E, 721D and E, and 821E wheel loaders. “The new angle brooms add value and versatility to Case wheel loaders,” said Tim O’Brien, Case marketing manager. “Equipping a wheel loader with an angle broom for job site cleanup can reduce the need for additional support equipment. It’s a smart solution for contractors looking

to shave operating costs and increase productivity.” The brooms feature poly-wire brushes, broom heads that adjust 30 degrees left or right and an integrated nozzle for applications requiring water for dust control. The Case angle brooms attach to the CNH Quick Coupler (JRB-compatible) for wheel loaders. Quick-change hydraulic fittings enable the operator to attach and detach the broom without disrupting hydraulic lines. Dual hydraulic motors power the broom attachment, driven by the loader’s optional thirdfunction auxiliary hydraulic control. A rugged steel frame houses the broom. Broom models are available with either solid or pneumatic tires. For more information, visit www.casece.com.

Rockland VB V-bottom excavator buckets dig shale, rock or frozen ground. The easy-dig lip design delivers faster, easier penetration every time the bucket digs, according to the manufacturer. These buckets fracture rock as they dig often turning the broken rock into bedding material. Because of the V-bottom design, operators get to the proper depth quicker than with a conventional straight cutting edge bucket. Less material moved equals faster ditching and less fuel consumption. VB V-bottom excavator buckets are built using high-strength, abrasion resistant alloy steels. Satisfaction is guaranteed, and all VB V-bottom excavator buckets are covered with the Rockland no-nonsense, one-year, 2,000 hour guarantee. Rockland has been manufacturing allied equipment for dozers, loaders and excavators for more than 60 years. For more information, call 814/6231115 or visit www.rocklandmfg.com.

New AED Chairman Seizes Opportunity to Lead Association KRUEPKE from page 16

is like a gravitational force, and this, like many of Dennis’ finer character traits, took shape in formative years at home — in this case, watching his father as mayor of their town for 14 years, as well as serving as a village trustee; both parents, in fact, also served as county commissioners. The family was active in church and community — with six kids in his family, and 11 cousins nearby, there were always plenty of Kruepkes circling the neighborhood. Dennis makes time to give back to industry and community as naturally as some folks make time for the golf course. And, as a matter of fact, he does that very well, too — every opportunity he gets.

Seize the Day Dennis has been quick to act on opportunities his whole life, and he’s the first to admit there have been some great ones. Topping the list (or at least second to meeting and then marrying his middle-school sweetheart Barb 37 years ago) was a phone call in 1995 from his friend Dick McCann. Dick, then sole proprietor of McCann Construction Specialties and once a dealer for Dennis, brought in his long-time friend to be president and partner in a new business venture. “I always kid him that he called me — I didn’t call him!” Dennis laughs. General Grabs the Construction Hendrickson Unveils AERO CLAD Bumperfor Tractors Market With Wide Base General Truck Tires has introduced its first allposition wide base tire for NAFTA, the Grabber OA wide base in size 445/65R22.5. Fleets operating in severe service and construction applications, such as fire service, waste hauling and concrete mixing, need confidence that their tires can handle heavy loads and stand up to off-road conditions. The Grabber OA (off road, all position) wide base, designed for super single fitment for steer and trailer positions, addresses these needs with a high carrying capacity and reinforced shoulder to add protection against curbing and abrasions, according to the manufacturer. The tire’s 21/32nds of tread depth, coupled with a cut- and chip-resistant tread compound, also assures these demanding customers that they can depend on this tire for long lifetimes, said Clif Armstrong, director of marketing of truck tires. “The Grabber OA draws on nearly a century of tough General tire heritage to bring advanced durability to our on/off road customers,” said Armstrong. “Now by adding wide base sizes to our product portfolio, these drivers can depend on the Grabber OA wide base to handle even higher payloads and help them operate quickly and effi-

ciently in severe conditions.” The Grabber OA wide base carries up to 12,800 lbs. (5,806 kg) in a super single fitment. The deep grooves in the tread elements and an aggressive pattern help improve traction on soft soil and muddy roadways. The thick undertread also resists casing penetrations from stones and other debris often found in off-road applications, allowing for multiple retreads, according to the manufacturer. While the 445/65R22.5 size will be available for orders in November, additional sizes (385/65R22.5 and 425/65R22.5) are scheduled for introduction in 2011. Hendrickson Bumper and Trim’s lightweight AERO CLAD bumper is now available as a production option on the International ProStar tractor. Composed of stainless clad aluminum, AERO CLAD is a fixed mount bumper maximizing style, durability, ground clearance and weight savings for this vehicle, according to the manufacturer. Made by bonding high strength, corrosion resistant stainless steel to lightweight aluminum then polishing to a bright mirror finish, AERO CLAD bumpers offer a durable, lightweight and environmentally friendly alternative to chrome plating. Utilizing modern metal forming and advanced materials, AERO CLAD for ProStar provides up to 2.75 in. (7 cm) of improved ground clearances, making it ideal for vocational applications. Backed by a

5year limited corrosion warranty, the bright mirror finish is 10 times thicker than chrome and resists corrosion, peeling, cracking, pitting and fading. Proven on International 9200, 9400, 9900i and WorkStar models, AERO CLAD for ProStar is the perfect choice for truckers trying to improve durability in on/off highway applications while giving their fleet a distinctive look. Navistar Selects Continental Tires as Standard Equipment Navistar International Corporation and Continental Tire North America Inc. announced Jan. 25 that Continental truck tires are the standard fitment for all International PayStar, WorkStar, and DuraStar severe service and medium duty vehicles as of Jan. 1, 2010. Navistar, a market leader in the North American severe service and medium duty segments, is a natural fit with the rugged durability of Continental’s on/off highway and construction truck tires, said Tom Fanning, director of original equipment sales for Continental — The Americas.

“International truck customers count on their vehicles to provide heavy duty performance and maximum uptime, even in the most demanding conditions. Now they can rely upon their Continental truck tires to work in tandem with these powerful vehicles, providing the top-level reliability and high mileage that can only come from a tire engineered to handle the toughest driving conditions,” Fanning said. Continental’s expansion into the regional, on/off highway and construction segment is backed up by truck tires engineered with maximum resistance to damage, tread

patterns designed for optimum traction, extra tough compounding and stone ejection systems. “All of these factors provide excellent durability and long original mileage that complement the work site-readiness of International brand severe service vehicles. Drivers of International PayStar, WorkStar, and DuraStar trucks will now be able to depend on Continental tires to keep them moving safely, even in unpredictable road conditions,” Fanning said. “The severe-duty cycle of International WorkStar and

PayStar trucks required a tire selection that can perform under these conditions, and Continental truck tires have the intelligent engineering and durability required,” said Melissa Gauger, vocational marketing manager for Navistar. “International trucks can tackle some of the most severe conditions on earth and routinely come back for more. With our MaxxForce big bore engines and heavy duty chassis features, we needed to select original equipment tires that were equal in capability and strength to the components of the truck itself. “This is why Continental truck

tires are the new standard for our severe service and medium duty vehicles. We have confidence that our customers will be just as satisfied with their Continental tires as they are with the power and reliability of their new International truck,” Gauger said. With the Navistar fitment, Continental is expanding its footprint into the severe service and medium duty vehicle segments to highlight its tire products that are engineered for maximum durability. Wireless Grapple Scale Provides In-Motion Weighing Scrap handling operations in both recycling and at the mill can now add in-motion weighing capabilities to their equipment. The RMT-XW in-motion grapple scale system combines wireless data communication and control with a new load-sensing technology. Marc Lefebvre, North American sales manager for RMT Equipment Inc., said that the RMT-XW system improves the accuracy of load measurements to within 0 ± 3 percent of true weight, while reducing installation and setup time to as little as two hours. “The fact is, this scale requires no configuration time at all,” Lefebvre said. “Installation is as simple as replacing the grapple’s attachment link with our weigh link, extend current hydraulic lines, then mounting the remote display in the cab.” Along with simplifying the scale’s installation, the wireless design also ensures higher reliability in severe-duty applications by eliminating extra electrical connections from the weighing link to the in-cab monitor. Pressure-Free Weight Sensing The RMT-XW grapple scale achieves its accuracy by using technology derived from strain gauges or load cells that engineers use in structural testing devices. The new scale is self-contained within a weigh link that replaces the yoke or link of the grapple attachment. A weigh chamber in the link integrates the high resolution load cell and motion controller, including a wireless antenna and battery pack. RMT currently is conducting trials to confirm that the same weigh link used in the grapple scale can be utilized for in-motion weighing with lifting magnets. Getting It Right the First Time According to Lefebvre, the RMT-XW scale can help scrap metal processors and hauling operations alike to load more efficiently, at less cost, and with greater safety. In the recycling yard, scrap handlers equipped with the new scales will allow operators to continuously monitor grapple loads as they unload and sort incoming material. Accurate weighing allows them to consistently load optimum weights when

For scrap handlers, accurate real-time weigh systems means every truck can be loaded to its maximum legal limit.

they pick and feed material for shredding and baling processes. By ensuring accurate, maximum weights as trucks are loaded, drivers will have no need to re-weigh at the gate and return to the loading area to adjust their loads. Data accumulated and transferred from the RMT-XW units gives operations managers an easy tool to compare productivity levels for varied types, sizes and makes of equipment, or to identify potential training needs of their operators, according to the manufacturer. Similarly, steel mills can improve the consistency of their melt mixes with precise measurement of each material type as it is picked and loaded. The ability to monitor loads accurately with any machine means mills can optimize the match between their

loading equipment and their processing capacity. “The accuracy and simplicity of this scale allows recyclers to deliver a better, more uniform product to their customers, while the mills can instantly verify their mix to achieve more consistent results, more efficiently,” Lefebvre said. Worry-Free Hauler Loads For scrap haulers, an accurate real-time weigh system means every truck can be loaded to its maximum legal limit, without fear of incurring fines for excess weight. Median weights using the RMT-XW grapple scale have been shown to average more tonnage per truckload than unweighed trucks, with less variance between loads,

according to the manufacturer. Instead of weighing their trucks repeatedly at the gate scale, drivers can be loaded up to their ideal weight before they leave the loading area, often saving enough time to deliver more loads per shift. Because the device is completely independent of operator control, the system improves loading accuracy regardless of operator experience or loading conditions. “This grapple scale removes all the ‘guesstimating’ from truck loads,” said Lefebvre. “In the long run, it lets truckers move more material with fewer hauls, so they save fuel and vehicle costs on every contract. Better accuracy gives them more see WIRELESS page 42

Bandit Industries Model 3090 Tree Chipper Goes Mobile Bandit Industries Model 3090 Track is a self-propelled version of the Model 3090 drum-style whole tree chipper. “The 3090 is already an extremely capable machine, said Bandit Industries Marketing Manager Jason Morey. “Adding a self-propelled option extends this capability to remote, difficult-to-reach terrain where towable chippers can’t go. To make the 3090 a mobile chipper, Bandit Industries utilizes a Caterpillar 325EL undercarriage outfitted with either 700 or 800-mm wide pads. Fully optioned with a cab and loader, the footprint for the Model 3090 Track is just over 11 pounds per square inch. “Everyone knows how well track chippers perform in soft ground or steep terrain, said Morey. “In cases like these, a track chipper is usually the only viable option, and having something with the proven reliability and production power of the 3090 can pay dividends when the going gets tough. The Model 3090 Track shares the same heavy-duty construction of Bandit’s larger 3590 chipper. It utilizes a 37-in. (94 cm) diameter drum with a 30 by 36-in. (76 by 91 cm) opening, and features a unique fourwheel, diagonal feed system consisting of two 36-in. top-feed wheels set on an angle.

To make the 3090 a mobile chipper, Bandit Industries utilizes a Caterpillar 325EL undercarriage outfitted with either 700 or 800-mm pads.

These wheels are mounted in a slide box and move up or down with the flow and diameter of material passing through the feed system. Two vertical side-feed wheels surround the standard 30-in. infeed, contributing to the 3090 Track’s pulling and compressing capability, according to the manufacturer. Power options include Caterpillar, Cummins or John Deere diesel engines, ranging from 535 to 630 hp (399 to 470 kW). The 3090 Track can accept material up to 24 in. (61 cm) in diameter, and combined

with a stationary high-flow discharge system, it can produce as much as 80 tons (72.5 t) of chips per hour. “Companies working utility or pipeline clearing will especially benefit from using a 3090 Track, said Bandit Industries President Jerry Morey. “These projects can run straight through swamps or literally right over mountains, and the 3090 Track is maneuverable and powerful enough to handle just about any situation. Bandit offers the Model 3090 Track with

an optional built-in loader and cab, featuring hydraulic or electronic joystick controls. The back-style loader has a reach of 232 in. (589 cm) without conveyor (191 in. (485 cm) with conveyor), a curbside swing of 50 degrees and a roadside swing of 85 degrees. It’s equipped with a 45/35 Rotobec continuous rotation grapple, and is capable of lifting up to 7,200 lbs. (3,766 kg) A wireless remote control option also is available, allowing a single operator to remotely manage the 3090’s functions and movement. “Those opting for the loader will likely be companies operating in isolated areas where there just isn’t room for a bunch of equipment, said Jerry Morey. “For more friendly surroundings, the remote function is a great way to utilize the 3090 Track with existing equipment — without the need for additional operators. Bandit Industries Inc. is a manufacturer of equipment for the logging, tree service, biomass and wood waste recycling industries. Bandit offers a complete line of hand-fed chippers, stump grinders, whole tree chippers, and horizontal grinders, all manufactured in a 240,000 sq. ft. facility located at the company headquarters in Remus, Mich.

Fecon Inc. Introduces the FCM22 Chipping Module

Fecon’s FCM22 allows production rates of 40 to 50 tons (36 to 45 t) per hour.

Fecon Inc.’s FCM22 is a 22 in. (56 cm) capacity chipping module, designed for mobility and flexibility. It can be adapted to the needs of almost any chipping operation. The FCM22 can be mounted to new and used log forwarders, tracked vehicles, log trailers, flat bed and log trucks.

The FCM22 features load sensing hydraulics and an IQAN control system. It is a six knife drum style chipper that makes a consistent and desirable wood chip, according to the manufacturer. The FCM22 allows production rates of 40 to 50 tons (36 to 45 t) per hour and can

densely pack chips into open top chip vans, collection wagons, or roll off containers. The FCM22 is available with either 365 or 500 hp (272 or 372 kW). Mounted on a forwarder or tracked vehicle the FCM22 goes to the woods for biomass collection as well as, right of way chipping, pipeline

clearing, and land clearing. Mounted on a trailer, with or without a loader, the FCM22 becomes a productive part of a stationary chipping operation, according to the manufacturer. For more information, call 800/528-3113.

control, too, so they can plan their fleet more efficiently. They also save time and worry, since they no longer have any reason to change their routes around to avoid DOT scales.” A Complete Package The RMT-XW system is supplied complete with its own Windows-compatible data logger, USB data connection, optional reporting software and printer. The system gauges each load automatically without requiring operator intervention and accumulates data continuously to allow flexible reporting and analysis. Its data can be exported directly into standard spreadsheet

formats, so load information can be shared readily with other corporate systems and business applications. Maintenance of the scale is very simple, requiring only monthly greasing of the weigh link. The data logger’s battery can be changed quickly with no recalibration required. The system is offered in a range of models to suit different equipment and applications. Models equipped with 10, 15 and 20 ton (9, 13.6 and 18 t) load cells are offered for conventional loaders, scrap handlers and excavators. Smaller units with 5 and 7 ton (4.5 and 6.3 t) load cells are recommended for small material handlers, excavators, loaders and

forklifts. According to Lefebvre, the load cells are designed to ensure generous compensation for potential overloads and operating stresses. “Our compensation programs maintain weighing accuracy regardless of sudden impacts, swing stresses or lifting shocks. Each model has a load cell capacity two times to five times their nominal limit to absorb overloads.” About RMT Equipment Established by Bob and Marc Lefebvre in 1996, RMT Equipment specializes in weighing solutions and the TRACKVISION Camera System for wheel loaders, forklifts,

mining trucks and conveyor belt scale and metal detector. RMT is the North American head office of the VEI Payload Management Systems (Loader Scales) and the Canadian head office of SciTronics belt scales and metal detectors. In 2010, RMT introduced North America to the XW family of wireless crane scales and grapple scales developed by Intermercato AB of Sweden. RMT systems and solutions are sold and serviced by a growing network of equipment dealers throughout the United States and Canada. For more information, call 800/648-8132 or visit www.rmtequip.com.

Synthetic Turf Expands Uses of Field And Your Hitachi Dealers PARK from page 1

mi. off Interstate 459. The primary users will be the residents of Vestavia Hills, with a population of more than 30,000. The estimated cost for the entire project is $5.2 million, and will reportedly be funded by the city of Vestavia Hills and the Vestavia Hills Parks and Recreation Foundation. As for what it means for the area, said Davis, “This project will be a tremendous asset for the region. It will allow the area to host many different types of events.” According to project manager, Donald Myrick of the Birmingham construction firm Myrick Gurosky & Associates Inc., “This is the largest synthetic turf project to date in the Southeast. The biggest challenges involved the field being 11 acres in total, which has made it difficult to get enough material on site each day to keep up with the schedule. “Construction began for us in August,” Myrick explained. “The first step was to install the electrical underground for the fencing and then move to fencing and sidewalks. The general contractor’s work is expected to be completed by late February. Heat in the early stages of the construction was not a factor but the colder temperatures lately have slowed crews down as far as grading stone and gluing turf. Things went a little smoother, however, for Eagle Golf & Athletic Inc. of Florence, Ala. which served as the base contractor. “Once the general contractor had the general excavation completed, we handled the laser grading, drainage, installation of geotextile and installation of rock base,” said Eagle Golf VicePresident Tommy Shook. “Our part of the construction started in August and we finished just after Thanksgiving. We worked one six-man crew about 60 hours a week.” As far as the biggest obstacles with this job, said Shook, “The size of the field was bigger than normal, but other than time, there were really not any other changes in construction scopes.” The company’s work involved handling the laser grade subgrade, installation of irrigation around the outside of the field, installation of the storm drainage lines and installation of nailer boards on the curbs to anchor the turf once it was put in place. Installation of geotextile, flat composite drains, drainage rock and compaction also had to be completed.

Equipment used included a small dozer, dump trucks, rollers, tractors and laser and dump trailers. Materials included approximately 10,000 linear ft. (3,048 m) of HDPE pipe for drainage, roughly 600,000 sq. ft. (55,741 sq m) geotextile, composite drains, treated two by fourmaterial for anchor boards and an estimated 17,000 tons (15,422 t) of limestone rock for the drainage layers. A check for tolerances also was required before the turf crews could start their operations. According to

from the one side and haul it over the other field. If there were room on the other side, we would be able to stage the materials on both sides and infill more quickly.” Crews used lulls with a carpet pole attachment to unload the turf and stage them in the proper order on the fields. Lulls also were utilized to unload and move the 2,000-lb. (907 kg) bags of sand and rubber. “We use a specialized machine that spreads the sand and rubber at a prescribed amount per square foot to

Crews install the sub base on fields three and four. The black portion is a fabric filter.

Shook, “I think these synthetic turf fields are great, especially with the amount of usage the fields get these days. It is becoming harder and harder to maintain grass soccer fields during the soccer seasons with the amount of wear and tear on them.” Covington Flooring, a subcontractor to MG&A, was responsible for the installation of the synthetic turf for the complex, which began in mid-October and was expected to be completed by the end of January. “The biggest challenges on a project of this size is more one of logistics,” explained Covington’s Rich Johnson. “A regular football/soccer field is usually around 100,000 square feet. This project is almost 500,000 square feet, all being installed at once. “The field is comprised of an upper and lower section. The upper section is approximately 280,000 and the lower section is 220,000. The field has a combination of sand and rubber infill. The field is accessible on both sides. However, the far side of the fields really isn’t capable of being able to handle staging supplies. So, it is quite difficult to have to load the sand and rubber

ensure even distribution throughout the field,” Johnson said. “We then use a tractor with a brush attachment and carefully work the sand and rubber into the turf. We’ve had 12 men on the site, and they work from sun up to sun down. And weather has been a factor. After a dry summer, the rains came when we started installing the turf. We have had many days of delay due to rain.” Added Johnson, “The visitors will be greeted by a vast expanse of green turf that stands in stark contrast to the parking lot and hills and trees surrounding the complex. We have visited many sites in Germany, which is Polytan’s headquarters, and the look of the Vestavia complex is very similar to the beautifully planned and landscaped soccer pitches there. The scene is very picturesque.” Work on the complex began early last year. The estimated completion date for the entire project is spring of 2011. John Deere’s Fiscal First-Quarter Profit Jumps on Strong North America Sales NEW YORK (AP) Deere & Co., the world’s largest maker of agricultural equipment, said Feb. 16 its fiscal first-quarter net income more than doubled, driven by growing sales of large farm machinery in the United States and Canada. The company also raised its earnings prediction for the fiscal year. Deere’s shares rose 4 percent in premarket trading. The Moline, Ill., company earned $513.7 million, or $1.20 per share, for the quarter ended Jan. 31, up from $243.2 million, or 57 cents per share, a year earlier. FactSet says analysts forecast a profit of 97 cents per share. Total revenue rose 27 percent to $6.12 billion. Equipment sales in the United States and Canada leaped 35

percent in the quarter. Outside those core regions, sales were up 22 percent for the quarter. Sales were helped by a 2 percent increase in prices. Agriculture and turf sales rose 21 percent on a combination of higher demand and prices. Deere said construction demand is up as well. Construction and forestry sales climbed 81 percent, and the unit turned an operating profit in the quarter from a loss in fiscal 2010. Higher costs for raw materials slightly weighed down results. Deere projects equipment sales will rise 18 to 20 percent during the current fiscal year that ends in October, and about 25 percent in the current quarter. It predicts net income this fiscal year of about $2.5 billion, up from a

November prediction of $2.1 billion. Analysts currently predict $2.37 billion. Worldwide sales of agriculture and turf equipment are forecast to increase by about 16 percent in 2011. Farmers in many of the company’s markets are experiencing income growth due to strong global demand for agricultural commodities, low grain stocks and rising prices for crops such as corn, wheat, soybeans, sugar and cotton. Farm commodity prices also have risen sharply since the beginning of the year. Deere’s worldwide sales of construction and forestry equipment are forecast to rise by about 35 percent this year on higher wood and pulp prices and improved construction equipment sales to rental companies.

Auctioneers in Orlando, Fla., from Feb. 15 to 19. Confidence showed up in the thousands, as a record number of bidders (7,739) and consignors (692) came together at the company’s permanent auction site in Orlando to buy and sell heavy equipment assets. Thousands of people visited the 200-plus acre site to inspect more than 8,000 heavy equipment items and bid in person; thousands more participated online at www.rbauction.com. Bidders from outside Florida purchased $145 million of equipment (84 percent), including $79 million purchased by out-of-country bidders (46 percent). “This Orlando auction had something for everyone and certainly kick-started our 2011 auction calendar on the right note,” said Steve Kriebel, regional manager, Ritchie Bros. “There were large numbers of bidders both onsite and online, which resulted in great returns for our consignors. It appears the market conditions of 2010 are starting to rebound — we are very excited about the year that lies ahead.” Online participation records also were broken during the five-day public auction in Orlando. A record 3,300 online bidders registered for the auctions. From these bidders, a record 616 buyers purchased more than $35 million (21 percent) of used and unused equipment and trucks. Ritchie Bros. sold equipment and trucks on behalf of close to 700 consignors, including Ocala, Fla.-based Brown Equipment Co. The company has been purchasing equipment at Ritchie Bros. auctions since the 1980s and selling equipment as a Ritchie Bros. consignor since 1995. This year, Brown Equipment Co. consigned close to 300 heavy equipment pieces in Orlando, including a large selection of motor graders, hydraulic excavators, wheel loaders, loader backhoes and more. “This year I consigned equipment in nearly every equipment category and received great returns; I was amazed at how strong the prices were,” said Lee Brown, owner of Brown Equipment. “I was on site at the auction while my equipment was selling and the atmosphere in the auction theater was great. There was also a lot of online participation. By reaching the world market Ritchie Bros. was able to exceed my expectations.” see RITCHIE page 62

It was standing room only in the theatre seating area.

Taking a moment to jot down a few notes after inspecting this John Deere 700J LGP is Nathan Gamble, used equipment manager of GreenSouth Equipment, Cairo, Ga. Tim Thomas, used equipment manager of Tractor & Equipment Company, a multi-state Komatsu dealer based in Birmingham, Ala., was keeping a close tab on what pricing the Komatsu machines were bringing at auction.

Brian Brenneman, president of Global Equipment Resources in Lakeland, Fla., is up top looking over this Komatsu PC300LC excavator while David Cantrell checks out the bottom.

Swapping notes on some of the cranes for sale (L-R) are Levy Brack, Heavy Iron, Columbia, S.C.; John Lawson, Dixie Crane Equipment, Spartanburg, S.C.; and Tom Wuerdeman, PVE Cranes & Services, Jacksonville, Fla.

Bidding Active During $172M Ritchie Bros. Orlando Auction RITCHIE from page 52

A couple of guys that know a thing or two about Komatsu machines are Paul Killury (L) of Komatsu Australia Pty Ltd., Brisbane, Australia, and Skip Walker of High Hills Equipment, Birmingham, Ala. Here, they discuss what they like in the sale. When the gavel dropped, this Caterpillar D9R rolled off the ramp at a final bidding price of $135,000.

Looking over a pair of Caterpillar 950F wheel loaders is Glenn Driskell of Puckett Machinery in Jackson, Miss. Melvin Ladneir of ML Services came down from Elkmont, Ala., to look over some equipment for a dealer in Birmingham. This Cat 740 truck was on the list of equipment he was surveying.

Chris (L) and O.J. Laman of Laman Equipment Sales & Rentals check out this Case 580M. They are hoping to take one back to Cave City, Ark.

Discussing their assessment of a New Holland D95 dozer are John Ratliff (L) of CME Sales, Bristol, Va., and Vernon Holmes, an independent contractor based in Abingdon, Va.

The view from I-4 (Interstate 4) caused drivers to slow up just a bit to view the spread of iron at Ritchie Bros. Florida auction. All smiles and enjoying the great weather and the atmosphere of the Ritchie Bros.’ annual Florida auction (L-R) are Paul Dabbs, Yancey Bros. Co., Atlanta, Ga.; Joe Caudo, Caudo Mining Construction Equipment, Australia; and David Hayes, H2sk Equipment, Woodstock, Ga.

AED Executive Forum September 8-9, 2011, Rosemont, Illinois This two-day event will combine information on the trends and issues that are shaping the future of equipment distribution with an opportunity to network with senior-level industry executives. An impressive group of leaders will share their insights and perspectives and challenge you with new answers to old problems. Successful 2010 Build St. Louis Expo. The Build St. Louis Expo was a great success! The aisles were full of representatives from all facets of the industry. All of the booths were sold, so attendees had some great new specialty contractors to meet and view new products on the market by the suppliers. The expo gave another meaning to the words “social networking” and actually shaking hands. Our appreciation to our industry participants – St. Louis Council or Construction Consumers, AIA St. Louis, St. Louis Minority Business Council and Contractors Assistance Program who helped promote the event to their members.
