Construction Firms Plan to Hire More in ’11 More construction firms are planning to hire workers this year than are planning to make layoffs, according to the results of an industry-wide survey released Jan. 24 by the Associated General Contractors of America and Navigant. The survey, conducted as part of the Construction Industry Hiring and Business Outlook, shows the industry may finally be emerging from a severe downturn

that has left millions of skilled workers unemployed. “This won't be an easy year for most firms, but it will be better than last year,” said Stephen E. Sandherr, the association’s chief executive officer. “If current trends continue, this industry will be in a much better position 12 months from now than it is today.” Sandherr noted that while 55 percent of

firms laid off staff and only 20 percent of firms added employees in 2010, the outlook is more positive for 2011. He said that 27 percent of construction firms report they plan to add staff in 2011 while only 20 percent report plan layoffs. Even more positive, expanding firms plan to hire an average of 23 employees, while contracting firms plan to lay off an see HIRING page 56

Work Under Way on $300M Oil, Gas Pipeline Plant By Brenda Ruggiero CEG CORRESPONDENT

Construction is well under way on a $300 million pipe manufacturing plant in Tunica County, Miss. The plant is the first manufacturing facility in North America for Wilh. Schulz GMB of Krefeld, Germany.

The Schulz Xtruded Products plant will produce pipes for the oil and gas industry, and plans are to initially employ 200 workers. Over the next five years, the number of employees will increase to 500. The project began on Aug. 20, and is currently running on schedule with subsee SCHULZ page 46

Heavy equipment maker Caterpillar’s soaring profit reflects strong demand in developing nations and offers reasons for optimism about the global economy and the prospects for other American manufacturers. “They are a pretty good barometer,” analyst Jeff Windau with Edward Jones said of Caterpillar Inc. That’s because Caterpillar sells its yellow-and-black mining and construction equipment around the world and can benefit from growth wherever it’s occurring, while its reach also means the company’s business reflects global economic trends. Caterpillar predicts the world’s economy as a whole will grow at a lukewarm rate of 3.5 percent in 2011, but developing regions will grow at nearly double that pace and continue buying equipment for mining and for upgrading their infrastructure. Caterpillar, based in Peoria, Ill., said Jan. 27 that its fourthquarter net income more than quadrupled to $968 million, or $1.47 per share, on $12.8 billion revenue. Those results beat analysts’ expectations and easily topped the $232 million in net income, or 36 cents per share, that it earned a year earlier on $7.9 billion in revenue. Chief Financial Officer Ed Rapp said increases in gross domestic product of roughly 6 percent in developing countries are leading naturally to rising demand for Caterpillar’s see GROWTH page 56

Raleigh Drops Giant Acorn With Lift From Southern Crane Atlanta has its peach. Mt. Olive, N.C., has a pickle. New York has an apple. In Raleigh, N.C., the highlight of the New Year’s Eve celebration is an acorn descending from the sky. For the 20th straight year, Raleigh’s own Southern Crane helped the city of Oaks celebrate the new year by lowering the giant acorn made of 1,250 pounds of copper and steel. Southern Crane has handled the honor every year since the inaugural First Night Raleigh, held Dec. 31, 1991. That initial request seemed a tad unusual, according to Earl Johnson III, president of Southern Crane. Two decades later the acorn has come to define Raleigh. “When we first lowered the giant acorn, we weren’t sure if people would turn out to see it. But the crowd really got into it, reaching out to try and touch it, Johnson said. “Celebrating New Year’s Eve in Raleigh has become a tradition for the entire Southern Crane staff. Made of copper and steel, Raleigh’s giant acorn is more than 10 ft. tall and is displayed in the city’s Moore Square throughout the year. It was created by sculptor David Benson to celebrate the city’s 1992 Bicentennial and Raleigh’s nickname as “The City of Oaks.

A festive crowd gathered for Raleigh’s annual acorn drop, the 20th one that Southern Crane participated in.

“Southern Crane is an integral part of First Night Raleigh, said Terri Dollar, program director, Artsplosure/First Night Raleigh. “Over the past 20 years, hundreds of thousands of First Night attendees have cheered at the lowering of the giant acorn — made possible by Southern Crane. Residents viewed the massive acorn being hoisted into place beginning on the morning

of Dec. 31 and took part in First Night Raleigh as the acorn descended later that evening in Raleigh’s City Plaza. “We enjoy being a key participant in this tradition. It supports the nonprofit Artsplosure and the city of Raleigh, bringing citizens downtown for a family- friendly celebration, said Johnson. Southern Crane is a comprehensive crane

and rigging service provider, and a wholly owned subsidiary of Southern Industrial Constructors, one of the largest private employers in North Carolina. Griffin Brothers’ Success Driven By Passion, Tenacity By Brenda Ruggiero CEG CORRESPONDENT

Larry Griffin Sr. is the founder and current owner of Griffin Brothers Companies in North Carolina, along with his two sons Larry Griffin Jr. and Mike Griffin. The company’s roots date back to 1961, when Griffin partnered with his brother to open Griffin Brothers Tire, a tire and auto repair center on the outskirts of uptown Charlotte. “It was during my 37 years working that front desk where I learned the value of hard work and customer service,” Griffin said. “This still rings true today, as we continually preach customer service and treating everyone with respect in all aspects of our business from the halls of the corporate offices to the hard working folks changing tires.” Since its inception, Griffin Brothers has been a family owned and operated business. Today, the company employs more than 200 people in four different businesses, including seven tire and auto repair centers, five construction and demolition landfills and recycle centers, one country club (Pine Island Country Club in Northwest Charlotte, N.C.), and a property development and management division. “I was brought up in the school of hard knocks, and at a young age I understood that my tenacity and entrepreneurial sprit would make me successful,” Griffin explained. “It wasn’t my intelligence that got the company to where it is today, but passion and an ability to get things done that has helped the company see tremendous growth over 50 years.” In particular, recycling has always been a passion for Griffin, since he believes that not only is it good for the environment and its citizens, but it also preserves precious landfill space. “After watching all these valuable materials being buried in our five C&D landfills, I knew there was a better way,” he said. “In 2004, the economics and political climate created a perfect storm to allow us to construct our first recycling center focusing strictly on C&D materials.” Griffin’s first full-scale recycling facility was opened in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The threeacre site included lots of heavy equipment. However, when the economics and politics of the area changed, Griffin was forced to close up shop. He is thankful to have learned some valuable lessons in that venture. In early 2010, construction began on a new state-of-the-art recycling facility in Harrisburg, N.C. The facility began operation in December of 2010. Griffin is pleased that a large portion of the materials that

would have otherwise ended up in the landfill have been diverted. An extensive list of equipment is used at the new facility. An Erin Picking Station includes a finger screener to separate the fines and dirt and a conveyor belt to divert larger sized material to the workers. Workers then pick off valuable materials and place them in one of ten chutes for concrete, brick and block, cardboard, plastics, drywall, metals, asphalt shingles, and other C&D material. Residual non-recyclable material is sent to the landfill to be buried. A Cat excavator picks up material and places it into the finger screener of the Erin Picking Station. A Cat dozer pushes material into hauling vehicles for recycling, further processing or burying in the landfill. A baler compresses the cardboards and plastics for sale, and a rock crusher crushes brick, block, and concrete into materials for sale and for road cover at the facility. A Peterson 4710B grinder is used to grind gypsum wallboard/sheetrock as well as wood and yard debris. A Sandvik QA440 screener screens gypsum product into three different materials, including fine powder, paper/powder mix, and coarse material. Griffin’s Cat equipment comes from Carolina Cat through their product support sales representative Rusty Lipe. “He is a solid gentleman with a great passion for the equipment that he deals,” Griffin said. “Rusty has been a huge help over the years in guaranteeing Griffin Brothers with very strong and durable operating equipment.” Lipe noted that Carolina CAT was established in 1926, and is the Caterpillar dealer for the western half of North Carolina. The home office is located in Charlotte, and there are branches in Asheville, Greensboro, Monroe, Hickory, Dillsboro and Boone. According to Lipe, his duties as a product support representative include helping customers with equipment fleet maintenance, parts, service, repair and rebuild needs. “I have been working with Griffin Brothers for four years, and have seen some drastic changes in the way they do business that are worth reporting,” Lipe said. “Some of these changes are using Grade + Grant funding, adding a complete new plant, and making changes to their offices to ‘go green,’ such as adding heat systems that operate on renewable fuel (wood pellets) and waste oil heat systems that have been added to the shop in an effort to reduce waste. They have started grinding the waste sheetrock into materials that can be reused, wood pallets are ground up into a material that can be see GRIFFIN page 48

NEW ORLEANS (AP) Nucor Corp. announced Jan. 27 that it will begin construction immediately on the first phase of a planned iron and steelmaking complex in southeastern Louisiana, one of the state’s largest new industrial projects in years. The Charlotte, N.C.-based company said it has obtained a key air quality permit from state environmental regulators and plans to begin construction on one iron-producing plant first before expanding to a second plant covered by the permit.

Dan DiMicco Nucor Corp.

“We are very excited that we will be able to begin moving forward with the construction of this facility,’’ said Nucor Chief Executive Dan DiMicco. The plant is part of what company officials say could eventually become a $3.4 billion complex employing up to 1,250 people. The first phase — costing $700 million — is expected to create hundreds of construction jobs and Nucor said 150 permanent jobs will be created, averaging $75,000 annually. The plant will employ technology that converts natural gas and iron ore pellets into iron used by Nucor’s steel mills. If the full project is ultimately built, executives said, it would eventually include a coke plant, blast furnace, pellet plant and steel mill. Nucor did not offer a timetable for completion of the first plant, but company officials have said it would likely take about 24 months from the time permits were issued. Nucor chose southeastern Louisiana’s St. James Parish last September after studying offers from several other states and Brazil. Nucor said it has spent $50 million to buy 4,000 acres of property along the Mississippi River for the complex and plans to partially finance its project through $600 million in bonds from an economic recovery program for a region hit hard by hurricanes in 2005. The company also is receiving $30 million from the state’s construction budget.

In December of 2010, the Independent Equipment Dealers Association (IEDA) announced the launch of a newly designed Web site for the association. The site was strategically designed to offer the Independent Equipment Dealers of the organization an ability to communicate efficiently with fellow members. The IEDA Community, released to all members the first week of January 2011, is the first and only communication platform built specifically to aid Independent Equipment Dealers in sharing information with a goal of ultimately increasing sales for member companies, according to IEDA. As each of the members owns and operates their own individual businesses, this platform was designed with the intention of uniting members and providing them an opportunity to develop relationships and share information in a secure and trusted environment. The new site allows members to communicate privately with other members both from an office and while on the

road, so the details of a deal are never public. The board of directors of the IEDA has expectations that this sales tool will prove to be of great value to members. The Independent Equipment Dealers Association is a non-profit trade association promoting participation, professionalism and advancement in the independent distribution of heavy equipment. The IEDA focuses its efforts on providing discounts, marketing, advertising, education and networking opportunities to members resulting in increased sales for member companies. Members of the IEDA are committed to displaying leadership in the industry by making ethical decisions and sound judgement, by making accurate claims to customers and by utilizing the products and services offered to them by Associate Members. The IEDA was established in 2002 and has become a unified and powerful voice within the industry. For more information, visit www.iedagroup.com.

Deere & Co. to Spend About $100M on India Plants NEW YORK (AP) Deere & Co. said Jan. 19 that it will spend about $100 million to build a new factory in India and expand an existing tractor plant in an effort to keep up with anticipated demand there. John Deere India has been the largest exporter of agricultural machinery from India for the past 5 years. Its tractors made in India are now sold in 70 countries. The world’s biggest maker of agricultural equipment said the new factory, whose location has yet to be determined, will make small agricultural tractors that will be sold in India and for export to other countries. The existing factory is located in Pune.

Deere & Co. has continued to build up its presence in India, breaking ground on a new grain harvesting equipment factory in September and opening a new water plant in early 2010. The company based in Moline, Ill., also has a technology and engineering center in Pune and is joint venture partners with Ashok-Leyland to build construction machinery. India is not the only place that Deere & Co. is investing overseas. In December the company announced that it would invest $50 million in a new manufacturing plant in China to make construction equipment.

New Case F Series Wheel Loaders Boost Fuel Economy

The Case 721F, 821F and 921F wheel loaders feature a 6.7-L Tier IV Interim-certified engine, rated at 179, 211 and 242 hp (133, 158 and 180 kW), respectively.

Case Construction Equipment’s F Series wheel loader models provide faster acceleration, quicker cycle times and higher travel speeds while delivering as much as 17-percent greater fuel efficiency, according to the manufacturer. The new Case 721F, 821F and 921F wheel loaders evolved from the company’s E Series product line. The Case F Series wheel loaders use selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology to meet Tier IV Interim emissions standards while also delivering increased power and improved fuel efficiency. “With the SCR technology in our Case F Series wheel loaders, Case has made what was already the industry’s most fuel-efficient line of wheel loaders even more fuel efficient,” said Tim O’Brien, marketing manager, Case Construction Equipment. “At the same time, the Case F Series engines are more powerful and respond faster.” The Case 721F, 821F and 921F wheel loaders feature a 6.7-L Tier IV Interim-certified engine, rated at 179, 211 and 242 hp (133, 158 and 180 kW), respectively. Significant Fuel Savings “These new Case wheel loaders deliver uncompromising leadership in fuel economy and performance,” O’Brien said. “To start with, we updated the four programmable power modes to save fuel and increase available power.” Use of the easy-to-program power modes — economy, standard, auto and max — gives operators flexibility in matching engine power to their jobs, O’Brien said. A new optional, five-speed transmission with a lockup torque converter, open-differential axles and advanced system programming provide even more fuel savings. “The five-speed transmission offers good value, with an 8-percent increase in fuel savings over a comparably equipped model with a four-speed transmission,” he added. A new dual-mode shutdown feature maximizes fuel economy and monitors vital engine components. Using the fuelsaver mode, the operator can limit the time the machine will idle. The desired shutdown time can be set in five-minute increments. Breakthrough Productivity The new Case wheel loaders include standard limited-slip front and rear axles that provide traction in all conditions, especially in non-compacted surfaces, such as gravel. The Case 921F wheel loader, with a 4.75 cu. yd. (3.6 cu m) bucket, launches a new size class for Case. Bucket capacities are 3.25 cu. yd. (2.5 cu m) for the 721F and 4.25 cu. yd. (3.25 cu m) for the 821F.

The F Series buckets are available with bucket teeth or bolt-on edges.

and high-production truck-loading applications. Bucket capacities are 3.25 cu. yd. (2.5 cu m) for the 721F and 4.25 cu. yd. (3.25 cu m) for the 821F. “The Case F Series wheel loaders can perform in a wide range of applications, from construction sites and landfills to quarry and aggregate operations,” O’Brien said. The Case joystick steering enables operators to seamlessly move between the joystick and steering wheel for highproduction operations. An optional two-lever hydraulic control system is available. The Case PowerInch feature lets the operator quickly and precisely approach targets in tight areas, regardless of engine speed. PowerInch maintains high RPMs to maximize hydraulic power and control, according to the manufacturer. Comfort in the Cab Several new comfort and safety features will boost operator productivity. The cab offers an unobstructed view to both edges of the bucket or attachment, while a wide window and sloping hood provide clear vision to the rear. A new rearview, wide-angle camera with an adjustable color monitor is available in the Case F Series. The camera option nearly eliminates blind spots and is ideal for jobs that require operating around other machines or workers. “At a busy work site, it’s important to have a machine with excellent visibility to all corners of the vehicle,” O’Brien said. “The Case F Series wheel loaders offer best-in-class rear visibility and a panoramic view to the front and sides for enhanced operator confidence and productivity.” As in previous models, the Case F Series wheel loaders include an advanced instrument cluster to enable operators to adjust various functions without relying on a service technician. The F Series models also offer ergonomically placed controls and a new heated cloth seat with seven adjustment modes. Attachments Add Value Case offers a range of attachments for the F Series wheel loaders, including pallet forks, brooms, jib booms, buckets and weigh-load systems. The F Series buckets are available with bucket teeth or bolt-on edges. In addition to the standard Z-bar loader, Case offers XR extended-reach models and a 721E XT tool-carrier model. Judge Denies Request to Stop Monroe Bypass RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) A judge has denied a request to halt preparations to build a toll road through the eastern suburbs of Charlotte. U.S. District Court Judge James C. Dever III decided Dec. 30 that work can go on leading to the start of construction on the Monroe Connector/Bypass. Dever ruled there is plenty of time to argue the case before workers begin building the 20-mi. road in Union and Mecklenburg counties in October. Several environmental groups represented by the Southern Environmental Law Center asked for an injunction, saying the road’s planners misled the public about the highway’s air and water impact and ignored cheaper alternatives. The authority building the road is waiting for a federal permit before awarding bids for the project.

JRB Partners With Paladin to Produce Couplers Add a quick coupler to an excavator and turn it into a multi-tasking, time saving advantage. Contractors want them light, yet robust, fast and easy to engage with attachments — at the same time providing top safety features to ensure that their high-dollar equipment investments and workers are safe. Couplers Weren’t Always Popular When JRB started manufacturing excavator couplers, contractors were still trying to grasp the concept. A contractor’s only coupler choice was a dedicated pin spacing coupler that attached to one particular pin diameter and pin spread, or the center line of one pin to the center line of the other. This was great for picking up similar types of attachments or multiple attachments within a brand, which often worked well because many contractors were still dedicated to one or two main brands. JRB’s dedicated pin spacing coupler evolution began… 1988 — CamLoc: The locking mechanism rotates on a cam-like device to grab and lock around the link pin. Contractors can stay in the cab and switch between multiple attachments without having to manually knock out or align pins. 1993 — SlideLoc: A linear wedge slides into a groove underneath the link pin for a tighter, safer hold. Contractors that switch out attachments semi-regularly find it very effective, while those that rarely change attachments find it can get stuck over time. 1996 — PinLoc: It also uses a wedge that secures to the link pin, but it requires manual placement of a pin to prevent the wedge from getting stuck, providing the same tight hold without the need to retract the coupler regularly. This is still available today. 1996 — SmartLoc: For contractors that don’t want to get out of the cab, this is the ideal mesh of safety and convenience. Using the same wedge system, it has a springloaded arm that requires the contractor to curl the coupler up and make contact with the excavator stick. The mechanical arm pivots around a spring-loaded axle and secures

JRB has partnered with Paladin.

the coupler until the operator unlocks it by pushing a button in the cab. This also is still available today. Improving Coupler Compatibility As couplers became more popular, contractors wanted more versatility. Along came the modern day multi-pin grabber coupler, which has a pivoting jaw on the rear end that adjusts to any pin diameter, ear spread and pin spread within a specific class. Every manufacturer’s coupler has different measurements, so this makes it easier for a contractor to find a wide array of compatible

attachments. 2002 — RotoLoc: A pivoting rear jaw locks hydraulically by utilizing a cam-like device that goes over the stick pin. A gravity lock comes down in front of the stick pin and prevents the cylinder pivot from retracting. This lock also keeps the attachment from falling off should something happen to the rear lock arrangement. New JRB VersaLoc Combines Safety, Versatility Today, safety is the top concern contractors have about couplers, so in 2009, JRB

developed the VersaLoc to put those concerns to rest. The multi-pin grabber coupler has three safety locking mechanisms: • Slide wedge style lock that captures the link pin, which is locked with a pilot operated check valve that locks the cylinder so it can’t retract if hydraulic pressure is lost. • Redundant (two) pivoting locking arms that pivot from side to side and into place to prevent the wedge from retracting. • Spring-loaded detent lock for the stick pin and link pin for redundant locking in the front and back. This virtually eliminates see PARTNERS page 22

accidental retraction in the case of operator error. The JRB VersaLoc offers a low offset, with the least amount of distance from the new pin location from its original pinpoint. This ensures that the contractor will achieve maximum lifting strength and range of motion with every attachment. It is compatible with pin spreads ranging from 13.7 to 24.9 in. (35 to 63 cm) and pin diameters from 2.5 to 4.3 in. (6 to 11 cm) on excavators from 25,000 to 100,000 lbs. (11,340 to 45,359 kg). Guaranteed Accident Prevention No matter what coupler you use, here are a few safety tips that — if followed — will virtually eliminate all accidents: • Never touch the switch or control buttons to lock or unlock the coupler until the attachment and coupler is fully curled. • Never lift or connect any attachment from any other point except the lift eye. • Perform a ground test every time you connect an attachment: With the excavator stick in the vertical position, lift the attachment 4 to 6 in. (10 to 15 cm) off the ground in a safe, clear area. With mid to high RPMs on the engine, try to uncurl the attachment and push the stick out at the same

time. If the attachment stays attached, an accident won’t occur. • Ensure that the control box is located where the operator can see the appropriate lights and hear the buzzer at all times. • Anytime maintenance is performed on the hydraulic hoses or cylinder, or when you attach a new coupler, lock and unlock the hydraulic cylinder 25 to 30 times without an attachment to ensure it works properly. • Inspect your coupler and attachments every day for obstructions (rocks, sticks, etc.) or fatigue, cracking and welding issues. JRB regularly offers safety training through its qualified dealer network free of charge. Operators, ground people, supervisors, parts staff and mechanics can all use these classes to prevent accidents before they happen. The Future Of Couplers After recently becoming part of Paladin Construction Group, JRB now has financial backing, support and more than 25 years of engineering experience. JRB will soon introduce an excavator coupler with hydraulic controls integrated into the coupler cylinder, which will reduce install time, ease of install and increase reliability. For more information, call 800/428-2538; or visit www.paladinconstructiongroup.com.

JRB has been manufacturing couplers since 1983.

Goodyear’s DuraSeal Technology Celebrates Fifth Anniversary When Goodyear unveiled DuraSeal Technology five years ago, it represented a breakthrough in tire technology. It was the first — and still is — the only truck tire in the industry with a built-in sealant, according to the manufacturer. Originally marketed toward the wastehauling industry with Goodyear’s line of mixed-service tires, the company now offers DuraSeal in several tire models, including the G316 LHT trailer tire, which also includes Goodyear’s Fuel Max Technology. “Growth for DuraSeal Technology has been tremendous, and day-in, day-out, it’s helping to prevent flats for our customers,” said Bruce Woodruff, director of marketing of Goodyear. “We’ve seen our sales nearly triple on our trailer tires with DuraSeal Technology in the past year. What’s more, our G288 MSA — a mixed service tire for use in the waste industry, especially transfer dump operations, as well as in construction applications, has doubled in sales in the past 12 months.” DuraSeal Technology uses a gel-like, solvent-free compound built into the inner liner of the tire. It can seal punctures up to one quarter inch in the repairable tread area, without the need to repair the tire until it is retreaded. This allows drivers to continue operating after a tire is punctured. (It does not seal sidewall punctures.) Over the years, DuraSeal Technology has cascaded to a variety of tires for specific applications. “It really made sense to bring DuraSeal to our long-haul trailer tires, which also incorporates our low rolling resistance Fuel Max Technology compounds to optimize fuel economy,” said Woodruff. The Goodyear marketing director pointed out that Fuel Max Technology makes the Goodyear G316 LHT a verified low rolling resistance tire under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s SmartWay Program. “Our research, analyzing all flats that are processed through fleetHQ, our emergency roadside service program, showed that a majority of flats occur in the trailer position,” Woodruff added. “Trailers not only pick up nails and other debris on the road, but when

backing into loading docks.” James Mason, maintenance director of McConnell & Sons of Little Rock, Ark., said after hearing what DuraSeal has done for mixed-service fleets, he was happy to see them available for the trailer position. “Before going to DuraSeal, we were normally experiencing 10 to 15 flats per month, so we were really pushing the limits when it came to downtime,” Mason said. “And you can imagine how all those extra service calls and replacement tires used up our tire budget. Things got expensive — $350 to $400 per call.” To see if DuraSeal could make a difference, Mason tested a set of DuraSeal tires on one of McConnell’s Heil pneumatic bulk tankers. “The tires went on the rig of one of our drivers who had suffered the most with flats,” said Mason. “After six months, the tires on that rig did not suffer one flat. Our driver couldn’t believe it. I couldn’t, either. So we ordered three more sets, and not one had a flat. We’re now standardized with DuraSeal in the 11R22.5 size, phasing out the existing trailer tires.” In waste hauling applications where operators run trucks into and out of landfills, Woodruff said Goodyear’s DuraSeal Technology tires have become commonplace. “Our self-sealing tires really took hold because nails and other debris have the potential to puncture tires and disable a vehicle.” Steve Cooke, maintenance manager of Ajax, Ontario-based National Waste Services (NWS), said two years ago his company began testing the Goodyear G177 with DuraSeal Technology on the drive position of a roll-off truck based in Lindsay. Over the last two years, the DuraSeal tires have run 108,700 mi. without a single flat, which Cooke said is “extraordinary.” NWS runs a fleet of nearly 150 power units, including rear-loading, side-loading, front-loading and roll-off trucks stationed at five different locations. It also runs 12 multiaxle highway truck and trailer combinations on Ontario Highway 401 from the Greater Toronto area to landfills. Because of the success of that test, NWS

now uses the Goodyear G177 with DuraSeal Technology on the drive position of trucks that operate in rural areas. Cooke said before the company tried the DuraSeal tire, it was common for its trucks to get two or more flats each week. The company’s success with the Goodyear DuraSeal tire on the company’s rural route trucks is why Cooke also has placed DuraSeal tires on the eight UAG open-top and four compact trailers. “It’s critical for those highway units not to

said. Shamrock’s construction waste hauling operation runs an all-Mack fleet of 17 rolloff trucks with Ampliroll lift systems, five Class 8 tractors and five trailers, including three moving floor and two end-dump trailers. “In the waste hauling industry, particularly for those involving construction waste, dealing with tire punctures is just an ongoing battle we deal with everyday,” Gersdorf said. “We’re always going to work sites where there are all sorts of materials that can puncture tires, particularly nails, screws other metal. Before we got the The number of service calls and DuraSeal tires, our truck tires were often damaged beyond repair, so we had to we’ve experienced has have someone go out and swap out the dropped significantly…” damaged tires. Naples, Fla.’s Jensen Underground Pandas to Again Utilities Digs Hitachi Equipment Highlight Safety Poster Events ASSE…

Kevin Jensen is one smart contractor. He’s a member of NUCA, and his company, Jensen Underground Utilities, Inc., holds a number of different contractor licenses, including fire sprinkler and fire protection as well as underground utilities and excavating. Jensen started his Naples, Fla.-based company in 1988 to take advantage of the booming market in southern Florida. Through the years he’s honed his expertise at growing when the times are good, and dodging the economic impacts of hurricanes and economic roller coasters when things get tough. “You just really have to watch your numbers,” says Jensen. “I could see back in 2005 that things were going to start slowing down. We had a lot of work that carried us through most of 2008, but when we could, we slowly decreased our manpower. In 2010, we’ve started building our crew numbers back up to meet the new work.” It also helps that he’s always bought dependable equipment, and it’s paid off in many ways. “We currently have four Hitachi excavators and have been a loyal Hitachi customer for many years. We’ve found Hitachi is high quality and durable, and holds its resale value. During these challenging times we rely on our equipment.” Obviously they chose well. Boasting 49 machines, Jensen does not require “on-the-road mechanics.” Jensen Underground works on large

residential developments, private-sector projects, and any number of small jobs. All are equally vital and important. “Whether it’s a $500 job or a $5million project, we’ve taken every call and responded,” states Jensen. “People remember that. We get a lot of loyalty work, and that pays off when things get tough.” Jensen believes in giving back to the community. They frequently participate in church projects, kids’ programs, and other charities.

2. This Jensen Underground Utilities crew is installing underground utilities, including fire protection, for an expansion project at St. Leo Catholic Church, Bonita Springs. About 25 percent of the company’s business is currently generated from church projects like this.

With the slow economy, Jensen looked for more municipal work and other jobs in surrounding areas. “We have recently begun performing more municipal work and increased our client base by working outside our geographical location of southwest Florida. Having the right team and equipment like Hitachi offers a comfort level for our clients and management team, allowing us to respond to any type of project that is offered.” The company typically bids on water main extensions and drainage systems. They usually buy new when it comes to smaller equipment and look for a demo or previously rented machines for larger pieces. When it comes to dealer support, Jensen knows exactly who he wants — Nortrax Southeast. “I want to buy dependable equipment. And I want to deal with people who are going to treat me right. Just be honest with me, that’s my policy. When my sales rep from Nortrax Southeast brings me a number, I know the negotiation is already done. I know that I’m being taken care of now, and I know he will follow through and take care of me in the future. I’ve found what I like, and that’s where I’m staying. Why go elsewhere?” This story was reprinted with permission from Hitachi’s Breakout Magazine, fourth issue 2010.

Winners and entrants of the American Society of Safety Engineers’ (ASSE) 9th annual ASSE kids “Safety-on-theJob” poster contest along with their families, friends, ASSE members and more, will again be able to enjoy the pandas during an ASSE U.S. National Zoo May event in Washington, D.C. During a recent visit to the United States, Chinese officials announced that the pandas, Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, can stay at the U.S. National Zoo in D.C., for another five years. Chinese pandas and their offspring belong to China and must be returned eventually. The panda exhibit is one of the highlights of ASSE’s North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week, May 1 to 7, kick-off events in D.C. for the “Safety-on-theJob” poster contest winners, entrants, families, ASSE members and officials as well as NAOSH corporate and association sponsors. Grand prize winners receive a $5,000 savings bond, are featured on the NAOSH 2011 poster distributed annually and much more. The posters that best illustrate being safe at work win. The zoo event is sponsored by ASSE’s Region III members from Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas. The 9th annual ASSE kids’ “Safety-on-the-Job” poster contest for five age groups for kids aged 5 to 14 is one way ASSE and its members work to educate the public on how to be safe at work and why. The contest runs through Valentine’s Day, 2011, Feb. 14. All entries should be sent to ASSE public relations, 1800 E. Oakton St., Des Plaines, IL 60018. The contest is open not only to ASSE members’ children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, but to all children sponsored by an ASSE member, an occupational safety, health and environmental (SH&E) professional. For those that do not have an SH&E professional at work or know one, just find a local chapter at www.asse.org and contact them directly. There is no fee involved. In all, there are 20 winners. Not only do all poster contestants receive a prize, but they and their family along with all ASSE members, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) staff and Alliance partners, regulators and legislators, are invited to attend the annual NAOSH kick-off and poster contest awards events in Washington, D.C., this May 1 and 2. Those events will be held at the National Zoo, the U.S. Capitol, the National Gallery of Art and the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). Also, Occupational Safety and Health Professional (OSHP) Day is on May 4, 2011. The theme for NAOSH Week is “Celebrating a Century of Safety”; in recognition of ASSE’s 100th anniversary. The poster contest winners will be listed on the www.asse.org/naosh11 web page Feb. 22, 2011.

Harley-Davidson Rebound to Motivate NDA Visitors Clyde Fessler, retired executive of HarleyDavidson Motor Company, is slated as keynote speaker at the 38th Annual National Demolition Association Convention March 5 through 8 at The Mirage in Las Vegas. He will tell the “HarleyDavidson Turnaround Story,” in which the last remaining American motorcycle manufacturer — facing heavy foreign competition — was able to recapture the highly competitive market. “We chose Clyde as our keynote speaker because he has beaten the odds in a highly competitive marketplace,” said Michael R. Taylor, executive director of the National Demolition Association. “We know he can help inspire our convention attendees to do the same thing in their industries.” A true motorcycle enthusiast and owner of six Harley-Davidsons, Fessler is a dynamic motivational speaker who demonstrates how he combined products, people and processes to build a brand, exceed customer expectations, define goals and objectives, and create a passion for the company at both a corporate management and employee level. The educational breakout sessions at the convention — the largest exposition of demolition equipment and services in the world — begin with “Identifying Refrigerated Appliances,” presented by Adam Dykstra, co-founder of Rapid Recovery, a leading refrigerant recovery service provider, and “Regulatory Issues in Refrigerant Recovery,” by Evelyn Swain of the U.S. EPA who will discuss the proper handling of refrigerants. Nathan Brainard, vice president of Insurance Office of America, will present a session entitled

“Insurance Matters,” on policy issues which significantly impact the demolition and recycling industries, while Jay L. Jacobs of CMS Energy will address the topic of the importance of Personal Protective Equipment at the job site in his session “You’ve Got to be Putting Me On!” Ray Passeno, current president of the National Demolition Association, along with Ed Ayers of OnClick Inc. will present a tour of the many resources available on the NDA Web site entitled “NDA Web site: The Source for All Things Demolition.” On March 8, the convention will offer a repeat of all sessions, as well as an industry round table “NDA: Current and Future Challenges Facing the Demolition Industry” moderated by Mark Shaurette, assistant professor at Purdue University and co-author of the groundbreaking book Demolition: Practices, Technology and Management. During the convention, the exhibit hall at The Mirage Event Center will be open from March 6 through 8. Other highlights of this year’s NDA Convention with the theme “The Magic is Back” are the Annual Golf Tournament at Paiute Gold Resort on March 5, the Opening Night Cocktail Reception on March 6, buffet breakfasts on March 7 and 8, “The Magic is Back” theme party/magic show featured magicians Kevin James, Jason Byrne, and Mac King on March 7. The final day of the convention, March 8, ends with the annual banquet. For more information, call 800/541-2412 or visit www.demolitionassociation.com.

New ‘Green Machine’ Provides Another Alternative Sennebogen LLC has introduced a new model green line material handler for American markets, designed to offer more choice to operators in the heavy duty lifting and loading applications. The Sennebogen 860 M is a 165,000 lb. (74,843 kg) rubber-tired material handler designed for use in heavy duty lifting applications such as scrap recycling yards, steel works and port facilities. The new

860 model also is available as a crawlermounted “R-HD” model in the 180,000 lb. (81,646 kg) range, as well as in a wide range of optional configurations including rail, barge, gantry and stationary pedestal mounts. According to Constantino Lannes, president of Sennebogen LLC, the 860 M and R-HD models fill a gap in the green line line-up between the existing models 850

and the 870. It has been designed to outreach and out-lift similar machines in this size range. To further enhance its productivity, the 860 also is available with numerous boom and stick configurations depending upon the application. Two different cabs are available with the Sennebogen 860. Along with the standard D270 maXCab, the 860 can be equipped with Sennebogen’s D300/260 hydraulical-

ly elevating cab, which gives operators the ability to adjust the cab upward and forward. Each of these cabs includes the latest D-Series features from Sennebogen such as a sliding entry door, roof-to-floor front window and extensive guarding. Lannes said that introducing a new model in this size range is a response to increasing customer interest in larger, see SENNEBOGEN page 38

Powered by a 364 hp (271 kW), 11-L Cummins, this machine delivers a generous power profile for extended operating cycles with low fuel consumption. Like other Sennebogen material handlers, the 860 models can be ordered with electric power, as stationary or tethered units. The swing gear is driven by a closed circuit loop with independent swing pump piggybacked on the main pump. Both mobile platforms provide an extra-wide stance allowing the machines to lift and swing full loads through a 360 degree arc. For more information, call 704/347-4910 or visit www.sennebogen-na.com.

The new 860 is designed to out-reach and out-lift similar machines in this size range and is available with numerous boom and stick configurations.

New Holland Names Kinsella Landscape CSDA Redesigns Winner of ‘2010 Landscaper’s Challenge’ Web Site; Enhances Member Services

Greg Semmer, president of Kinsella Landscape Inc. (L), accepts the grand prize award for the “2010 Landscaper’s Challenge” from Dave December, marketing manager, New Holland Construction. A New Holland L170 skid steer loader worth more than $32,000 was presented to Kinsella Landscape for the best landscape design/build project of the year.

New Holland Construction and Lawn & Landscape magazine named Kinsella Landscape Inc., of Blue Island, Ill., as the winner of the “2010 Landscaper’s Challenge.” The grand prize — a New Holland L170 skid steer loader worth more than $32,000 — was presented to representatives of Kinsella Landscape during an award ceremony at the New Holland booth during the 2010 GIE+EXPO show in Louisville, Ky. The nationwide contest, sponsored by New Holland, showcased the best landscape design/build projects of the year. “New Holland is pleased to honor Kinsella Landscape as this year’s winner, and we congratulate the other semi-finalists and contestants for the challenges they overcame to complete their projects,” said Dave December, marketing manager, New Holland Construction. Kinsella Landscape turned a dilapidated backyard — surrounded by townhomes and an eight-story high-rise — into a “city chic” garden sanctuary for a family living in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood. The narrow alleyway, mature shade trees, tall fence and confined work area limited the team’s choices of equipment to a skid steer loader. The company created a private area for entertaining and relaxing, complete with two bluestone patios, a curved path and stone planters constructed from limestone. The project took 450 man-hours to complete. Lawn & Landscape’s panel of industry judges selected Kinsella Landscape from the field of six semi-finalists based on the merits of their project’s design, overall appeal, material selection and workmanship.

Five other semi-finalists were selected by Lawn & Landscape magazine throughout the year: • Green Works Environmental, LLC, Allenwood, N.J. • K Morris Landscape Design, Inc., Oakdale, Pa. • C&S Landscaping of Virginia, Strasburg, Va. • Rain Men Landscaping and Irrigation, McDonald, Pa. • Sycamore Springs Landscape, Reading, Pa. The semi-finalists received $250 worth of New Holland merchandise. For more information, visit www.newholland.com.

The Concrete Sawing and Drilling Association (CSDA) has redesigned is web site. The new look aims to provide the best online services for members as well as the architects, engineers, general contractors and government officials who specify concrete cutting products and applications, according to the organization. CSDA members can log in to the members section to access safety and training materials or download sample forms and worksheets. The association currently has 27 industry-specific standards, specifications, tolerances and best practices available, along with 92 toolbox safety tips for members to use in their day-to-day work. The site also gives members access to CSDA’s online training program, which consists of 26 web-based courses that have been completed by more than 500 students to date. Specifiers of concrete cutting also are welcomed to the new site with many resources to aid them when specifying concrete cutting services. They can submit jobs for bid requests by CSDA members via a simple, online form or look up sawing and drilling specifications, standards and tolerances in PDF format from all the major sawing and drilling applications. There also are articles on concrete cutting capabilities and diamond tool technology, together with a contractor search where specifiers can locate a professional CSDA contractor serving their area through a clickable map. We understand the crucial role that specifiers play in our industry, and so it is important that we address their needs while promoting our members,” said CSDA Executive Director Patrick O’Brien. “The redesigned Web site does a great job of forging links between CSDA contractors and specifiers, and keeps the association and its members ahead of the curve,” he added. All other popular features like the membership directory, forums, cutting news section, event calendar, training information, Concrete Openings magazine, CSDA benefits and the discussion forums remain in place for members and nonmembers to get the most out of their visits to the site. The redesign emphasizes CSDA’s aim of providing members with better tools to help their businesses succeed and educating specifiers on the advantages of sawing and drilling. Whether from Chicago or Downstate Illinois, Democrat or Republican, these legislators all have one thing in common – they support bills that help the Illinois aggregates industry and oppose bills that hurt our interests. As the cost of political campaigns continues to rise, we want to ensure that legislators who support this industry can compete and continue to do good work. For that reason, supporting the IAAP PAC is critically important to the future of our industry, your company, and your Association’s political activities. Please consider sending a donation, payable to the IAAP, to: John Henriksen, Secretary/Treasurer, IAAP PAC, 1115 S. 2nd Street, Springfield, Illinois 62704. An IAAP company has posted a new MSHA citation on the MSHA Enforcement Alerts website at www.mshaenforcementalerts.com maintained in partnership by the IAAP and other Midwest Aggregate Associations. This citation concerned the company because the inspector believed miners were stepping over the motor, but just as in a lot of other cases, this practice was acceptable during previous inspections by this same inspector and also during a CAV that was completed on these screens just 2 1/2 years ago. This motor configuration is present on many screens by different manufacturers. To view further details on this citation you may log on to http://mshaenforcementalerts.com/citations.php ?id=144. The project manager is David Bryant, and the project superintendent is Bill Howell. “Dewatering of the vertical press pet in the hot mill has been one of the biggest challenges,” Howell said. “Another series of challenges has involved expediting construction of the project on a fast-track basis as information on the process equipment needs are continually integrated with the overall building design elements.” In the next few months, construction employment will peak at approximately 200 workers. Earthwork and geo-pier work was handled under a separate contract between Tunica County and L & T Construction. Concrete volume is in the range of 12 to 14,000 cu. yd. (9,175 to 12,000 cu m). Your wish is its command. Think it, then do it, with the precise hydraulics of a new Zaxis Dash-3 Excavator. Low-effort, short-throw pilot levers, balanced engine performance and hydraulic flow, best-in-class metering, and smooth multifunction operation make good operators great, and great ones unbelievable. These utility-sized Dash-3s also deliver increased swing torque, faster arm roll-in, and faster boom lower/arm movement for faster cycle times. Bonus. Tired of jerky, wandering controls that have a mind of their own? Make a smooth move to new Hitachi Dash-3 Excavators. www.hitachiconstruction.com

Grade + Grant Program Fuels Co.’s Drive to Replace Outdated Iron GRIFFIN from page 8

used as fuel, yard waste is ground into mulch/compost to be reused, and brick and concrete are crushed and sized into a reusable material.” Griffin noted that the company has been involved with the Grade + Grant Funding program for over a year. The program is designed to give organizations an incentive to reduce the use of outdated equipment and engines that pollute the air and replace them with updated equipment and engines that limit and reduce emissions. Specifically, in 2010, Griffin replaced the engines on two of their landfill compactors, one in Lancaster County, S.C., and one in Mecklenburg County, N.C. “The Grade + Grant Funding, in short, is a government grant to improve the air quality in Mecklenburg and surrounding

counties by providing funds to repower, rebuild, or replace high emission producing engines,” Lipe explained further. “The grant does not pay 100 percent, but does provide some help for those who want to improve the environment.” Lipe and Griffin Brothers employee Justin Mueller work together in the process to select and plan eligible equipment for grant funding, and Mueller then applies for the grant funds. “Upon selection/approval from Grade officials, we work together to make changes and upgrades to their equipment,” Lipe said. “Justin is constantly looking for ways to improve their process, as well as the environment, and save their company money. I believe this is a wonderful story that shows how government grant funding and willing business owners can work together to improve our plan-

et, reduce waste and recycle. These changes are huge to our environment and community, and I know that Mr. Larry Griffin has spent a lot of time and money to do his part. All of these changes have also added jobs at his facilities, and kept people in allied businesses working while providing some green products to the marketplace and keeping them out of the landfill.” Griffin noted that his company is investing the time, effort and money to become the leading C&D recycling in the Carolinas. “We are looking forward to a future where markets for recyclables are evolved and mature,” he said. (4,400 kg). “We are pleased to add the 340AJ to our existing line of boom lifts,” said Chris Mellott, JLG Industries vice-president — sales and market development for the Americas. “As with all JLG’s aerial work platforms, the 340AJ delivers industry-leading terrainability, enabling operators to reach their work and efficiently complete their jobs.” The 340AJ is easy to service and maintain. In addition, the 340AJ features steel hoods to increase its durability, and boasts a 500-lb. (227 kg) capacity in addition to its 34-ft. lift height and 17-ft. up- and-over reach. The 340AJ meets sustainability regulations with its environmentally-friendly Tier IV diesel engine. A gas/liquid propane engine also is available. For more information visit www.jlg.com.

Celebrities arriving at the Golden Globe Awards program in Beverly Hills walked the red carpet under environmentally clean lighting provided by Multiquip and Altergy. Powered by an Altergy zero emissions Freedom Power fuel cell system, the lighting was delivered by Multiquip’s self-contained Earthsmart portable light tower. Altergy’s hydrogen-powered fuel cells provide clean and quiet “off the grid” electricity while Multiquip’s high-efficiency plasma lighting system can illuminate an area approximately the size of a football field. Altergy fuel cells also provided clean electrical power for numerous other Golden Globe Award electrical demands. The Golden Globe Awards, televised by NBC on Jan. 16, is seen by millions in more than 160 countries worldwide and is one of the top three most-watched awards shows on television. In its 68th year, it is one of the few awards ceremonies for both television and The 340AJ features steel hoods to increase its durability, and boasts a motion-picture achievements. “We’re excited to have our Earthsmart 500-lb. product management, engineering and customer support of Multiquip. “It’s a great fit for this type of application where there’s a premium on clean quiet operation, safety and high efficiency.” The Earthsmart system was used for the first time ever at the March 2010 Academy Awards ceremony. The eco-friendly system now is scheduled for use at the upcoming Screen Actors Guild and Grammy awards, and also will again be in operation at the 83rd Academy Awards program, as well as at upcoming NASA space shuttle launches. “This application demonstrates the versatility and range of usages for our Freedom Power fuel-cell systems,” said Eric Metter, Altergy’s president and chief executive officer. “We’ve established a strong base in telecommunications in recent years and the adoption of our clean power systems by the Golden Globe Awards and Oscars shows our ability to provide new and exciting ecofriendly solutions to today’s numerous growing power demands.” For more information, visit www.multiquip.com or www.altergy.com.

Strong Fourth Quarter Hints at Growth Within Industry GROWTH from page 1

products. As China and India urbanize, they will need more and better infrastructure, and their people will demand a higher standard of living, which also feeds demand for products and commodities, Rapp said. “The road to progress begins with the road. Period. You’ve got to have that basic infrastructure,” Rapp said. Caterpillar said it hired about 19,000 people in 2010, including 7,500 in the United States as it ramped up to meet demand. Those hires restored more than half the 37,000 full-time, contract and part-time jobs the company eliminated during the recession. At the end of the year, the company had 104,490 employees, a little more than half working outside the United States. The company plans to invest about $3 billion in capital projects in 2011, more than half in the United States. It is trying to boost production to reduce the wait for its mining equipment, now eight to 18 months. “They do have a significant base in the U.S., so it does give us a window on what’s happening here domestically,” Windau said.

A hitch could come with inflation, which could hurt the bottom line for manufacturers because it makes their raw materials more expensive. But for Caterpillar, higher commodity costs also means more demand for mining equipment, which can help its bottom line. Manufacturing remains a major source of U.S. economic activity, at 11.2 percent, down from a peak of 28.3 percent of U.S. economic activity in 1953, according to the Commerce Department. Growth in manufacturing was a key force pulling the U.S. economy out of recession. Factories added 136,000 jobs last year, the first annual gain since 1997. And the U.S. manufacturing sector is the world’s largest, producing 21 percent of all manufactured goods globally, according to the National Association of Manufacturers. Japan comes in at No. 2 with 13 percent, and China rounds at the top three with 12 percent, the trade group said. Other U.S. manufacturers could benefit from the forces buoying Caterpillar. And General Electric Co. — which makes products from dishwashers to wind turbines and derives about one-fourth of its profit from its

financing business, GE Capital — released an encouraging fourth-quarter report Jan. 21. GE said its quarterly net income rose 52 percent from a year earlier, and CEO Jeff Immelt has said he expects GE’s profit to be driven by industrial growth in China. The company earned $4.46 billion on revenue of $41.4 billion for the period that ended Dec. 31. Its quarterly revenue rose just 1 percent, but it was the first increase from a year earlier in nine quarters. Eaton Corp., which makes hydraulic and transmission systems for the auto and space industries and military, said Jan. 27 that its bookings rose 36 percent for the quarter that ended Dec. 31. Its quarterly net income rose 17 percent to $280 million on revenue of $3.7 billion, also up 17 percent. The positive outlook for Caterpillar and other manufacturers depends on the economy continuing to recover. They would receive a major boost if the U.S. housing market rebounded. Conversely, Caterpillar said its results will be hurt if governments act prematurely to fight inflation by raising interest rates. Caterpillar announced plans in 2010 to build three new facilities in the United States

and five in other countries as it works to move production closer to where its equipment will be sold. It said its sales in the developing world remain at or near record levels, though its sales in North America and Europe remain depressed. “While sales rose, they are still far below previous highs with room to improve as economic growth and construction activity picks up. New machine sales in the U.S., for example, are still less than half their prior peak which was in 2006,” said Mike DeWalt, the company’s director of investor relations. The company predicts a 2011 profit of nearly $6 per share on more than $50 billion in sales. Analysts are expecting $5.84 a share on $48.6 billion. “I just think the company is well-positioned from a long-term growth perspective,” Windau said. For all of 2010 Caterpillar reported net income of $2.7 billion, or $4.15 per share, on revenue of $42.6 billion. That’s considerably better than the previous year’s $895 million net income, or $1.43 per share, on revenue of $32.4 billion.

AGC Forecast More Construction Firms Planning to Hire HIRINGfrom page 1

average of 16 employees. Among the 26 states with large enough survey sample sizes, 45 percent of firms in Iowa plan to hire, more than in any other state. Those firms plan to hire an average of 5 employees each, 21 percent of their workforce. Only five percent of Iowa firms plan layoffs. Meanwhile, 48 percent of firms in Idaho plan layoffs for this year, the highest percentage of any state. Those firms plan to lay off an average of 12 employees each, 11 percent of their workforce. Only 14 percent of Idaho firms plan to hire. Despite the improving employment outlook, more contractors expect the construction market to shrink in 2011 than expect it to grow. Contractors are most pessimistic about the private office market, where 56 percent expect activity to decline, followed by the retail, warehouse and lodging market, where 52 percent expect less activity. Contractors are most optimistic about the hospital and higher education market, where 32 percent expect growth and the power market, where 29 percent expect growth. However, even for those markets, 36 percent of contractors expect the hospital & higher education market to shrink and 32 percent expect the power market to contract. Contractors’ low expectations may be

driven by the fact most firms expect stimulus-funded construction activity will decline this year. Clear majorities of firms (ranging from 56 percent to 66 percent) expect stimulus spending in every market segment to decline in 2011. Meanwhile, only 30 percent of firms report they plan to perform stimulus-funded work this year, down from the 45 percent that reported performing stimulusfunded work in 2009 or 2010. “The stimulus propped up many construction jobs during the past two years,” said Ken Simonson, the association’s chief economist, noting that firms reported one-in-five employees were involved in stimulus-funded projects during the past 12 months. “The stimulus is already becoming a thing of the past in most contractors' minds.” The dour market outlook appears to be affecting demand for new construction equipment. Only 28 percent of firms report plans to purchase new construction equipment in 2011, down from the 34 percent that reported purchasing equipment last year. Investment levels among the firms planning to buy equipment appear to be heading up, however. Firms report plans to spend nearly $900,000 on average for new equipment, up from average totaling of $671,000 last year. Bid levels will remain very competitive this year. According to the survey results, 29 percent of firms report they plan to lower bid

levels in 2011. That follows a year when 74 percent of firms reported lowering bid levels, including seven percent who reported lowering bid levels to the point they lost money performing the work. Adding pressure to firms’ bottom lines, 71 percent of firms report their health care costs are expected to increase in the wake of the new legislation enacted last year. “In the face of tough market conditions, many firms are focusing on operating efficiencies and expense reduction, positioning themselves well to take advantage of a resurgent construction market,” said Michael Feigin, Navigant’s managing director for construction. “Construction firms are doing this, in part, by adopting new technologies and new techniques like BIM and Lean Construction.” Growing numbers of firms plan to embrace new construction modeling technology known as Building Information Modeling (BIM) this year, Feigin noted. While only eight percent of firms currently use the technology, 55 percent expect that number to increase in 2011. Demand for green construction also continues to grow, with 15 percent of firms reporting working on Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) registered projects in 2010 and 53 percent expecting that number to grow this year.

Growing numbers of firms plan to work on public private partnerships (PPP), perhaps driven by tight public sector budgets. Firms report working on an average of 5.2 PPPs in 2010, and an overwhelming 70 percent of firms expect that number to increase this year. In contrast, use of Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) contracts that include incentives for collaboration among parties involved in a project, does not appear very widespread. Firms reported working on an average of only 0.26 projects with IPDs last year, and 92 percent of firms expect that number to decrease this year. Nearly half, 46 percent, of firms reported implementing Lean Construction Concepts, a way of minimizing waste of materials, time and effort. Feigin suggested many firms have embraced lean construction concepts to cope with decreasing revenue and ever tighter margins. The outlook, which the association cosponsored with expert services firm Navigant, was based on survey results from nearly 1,300 construction firms from 49 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Contractors from every segment of the industry answered over 30 questions about their hiring, equipment purchasing and business plans. Economists and specialists from the association and the firm analyzed those comments to craft the outlook.
