Test piles are an important part of the project, which, according to project manager Eric Eliason, is basically being built in the middle of a lake.
Turbid Terrain Tests Crews on Fla.’s SR 26 By Kerry Lynn Kirby CEG CORRESPONDENT
It has been wet work, much wetter than expected. But now that north-central Florida has entered its “dry season,” work on a new overpass to carry Fla. 26 over U.S. 301 and the CSX railroad line in Alachua County is getting more productive, said Southland Construction Inc. project manager Eric Eliason. The Apopka, Fla.-based firm was awarded the $9.96 million contract for the job, which covers 1.75 mi. (2.8 km) and entails a realignment of Fla. 26 and construction of an overpass across the CSX railroad tracks and U.S. 301/Fla. 200 in Orange Heights, Eliason said.

The project is intended to ease traffic and improve safety at the crossroads by allowing motorists on Fla. 26 to travel unobstructed across U.S. 301 and the adjacent, parallel CSX railroad via the roughly 25-ft.-high (7.6 m) overpass, he said. Work began on the project July 2, with a contract time of 625 days, Eliason said. “Our initial schedule called for a completion date of November 2009, but revisions to the workflow due to the wetland conditions have pushed our current completion date back to February 2010,” he said, noting that the geotechnicals that the Florida Department of Transportation had used
clearing debris from a November rock slide on U.S. Highway 64 in Polk County by March 31. A statement from the state Department of Transportation said crews have removed about 6,000 cu. yds. of debris and have been working to stabilize the adjacent mountainside as of Jan. 8. see TDOT page 14
The assembly of the giant Terex crane took eight people (including two from Dozier Crane & Machinery who came to assist) three days.
Speaking at a press conference following an invitation-only meeting of key U.S. senators, Dennis Slater, president of the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM), forcibly relayed the direct connection between infrastructure investment and job creation for the construction industry and entire manufacturing sector. The meeting and conference were held to highlight the importance of infrastructure investment to putting Americans back to work. Slater was selected to attend as the sole representative of the manufacturing sector, in recognition of AEM’s leadership role in support of critical infrastructure investment and the Start Us Up USA campaign, which advocates timely passage of multi-year transportation legislation. AEM also is active in advocating for adequate water infrastructure investment. “The single best way to bring back
hundreds of thousands of good-paying, sustainable manufacturing jobs in the U.S. is to pass major long-term investments in our critical national infrastructure,” Slater noted. Senators at the meeting are working on a new “jobs creation” package of legislation, and they recognize that a central piece of that effort will be rebuilding America’s infrastructure to create jobs, grow the economy and maintain and improve our nation’s safety, environment and international competitiveness, Slater noted. The meeting in the U.S. Senate was co-chaired by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV); Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), chair of the Senate Democratic Steering and Outreach Committee; and Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), chair of the Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee. In addition, 19 Senators attended, see INFRASTRUCTURE page 14

Coble Trench Safety Opens 10th Branch in Atlanta, Ga. Coble Trench Safety Inc. (CTS), a Greensboro-based company specializing in the rental and sales of trench safety equipment, as well as OSHA-compliant training classes, and the rental and sales of traffic safety equipment has opened a new branch in Atlanta, Ga., which will service the Atlanta metropolitan area and surrounding area in Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee. “We are very excited about our new Atlanta operation,” said Tom Coble, president of CTS. “The Atlanta branch is our seventh expansion outside the state of North Carolina, and will be the tenth fully-staffed operation of Coble Trench Safety in the United States.” The new branch will be managed by Matt Pace with Coble Trench Safety’s Vice President — Operations, Matt Coble, help-
ing to develop the initial branch presence for the company. Matt Coble has many years of direct successful experience in the equipment rental industry in a variety of positions. Pace and Coble will be responsible for the Atlanta market for CTS. “We are fortunate to have Matt Coble and Matt Pace heading up our new Atlanta location,” said Coble. “Their successful track record and specific industry experience will truly be an asset to Coble Trench Safety and our customers in the Atlanta market.” In maintaining the objective of building a network of trench and traffic safety branches, CTS plans to open at least one to two other new branch operations in the coming year with additional branches to follow. Attendees enjoyed the hospitality of the San Antonio Marriott Rivercenter Hotel for accommodations, open suites for use during the event and social events. The Henry B. Michael Marks, moderator of AED Summit 2010, was the event’s host, presiding over all the convention activities throughout the three days. In an effort to draw Congress’s attention to the economic consequences that failure to renew the federal highway program will cause for Texas as well as the rest of the United States, a rally was held on the first day of the convention. “Start Us Up USA!” was sponsored jointly by AED and the Association of Equipment Manufacturers. Transportation Secretary Announces $94M for Federal Lands Road Projects Sixty-eight road projects in 31 states will receive $93.9 million in Public Lands Highways grant funds to improve access to public lands, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood announced Jan. 13. “The roads that carry America to and through its national parks, tribal lands or any of the other federal lands need help, just like the rest of the national highway system,” said LaHood. “These funds will help protect the roads for the many who depend on them and improve the quality of life for communities served by these unique places.” The funds will improve and increase accessibility on the lands of 15 Native American tribes, 11 military bases, 19 national park units, 10 national forests and four national wildlife refuges. Unlike most of the nation’s public roads, which are managed by state
departments of transportation, federal lands roads are maintained by various tribal and federal agencies. Funds from the Public Lands Highways grant program supplement their existing infrastructure programs. They also can be used for cities and counties that are responsible for the roads providing access to federal and tribal lands. Examples of this year’s grant recipients include: • More than $4 million will be used to help improve road access to the Flight 93 National Memorial in Stonycreek Township, Pa. • Nearly $3 million will be used for road improvements near the forthcoming American Veterans Disabled For Life Memorial in Washington, D.C., between I-395 and the U.S. Capitol. The memorial is anticipated to be completed by 2012. • Nearly $2 million will be used to make tribal road improvements on the

Georgia Highways Benefit From $75M in Stimulus Cash ATLANTA (AP) Some $75 million in federal stimulus dollars have been awarded to road widening and resurfacing projects throughout Georgia. State Transportation Commissioner Vance Smith said 72 projects have received the cash. Smith said with the new projects awarded in December, the Georgia Department of Transportation has now funded more than 200 stimulus projects valued at nearly $600 million.

including — in addition to Reid, Stabenow and Murray — Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA), chair of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, which has jurisdiction over the federal surface transportation and water infrastructure programs. Also attending were leaders of business and labor organizations, local and state government officials, and representatives of the rural, education and minority business communities. At the press conference, Slater spoke alongside Senators Boxer and Bob Casey (D-PA) and two representatives of national labor organizations. Slater stated, “What we heard today was not only a commitment to a near-term jobs creation package, but a commitment from Senator Boxer to write a multi-year highway bill this year, and to start that process in March. We fully support this commitment and look forward to working with Senator Boxer and her colleagues as they write this critical legislation.” He added, “We know many thorny policy issues have to be resolved before the House and Senate can come to agreement on a new multi-year highway bill, and that in the meantime — right now — Congress needs to pass some measures that can help to create jobs for Americans in the nearer term. We respect and support this. But as soon as that work is done, we hope that our lawmakers will turn to our nation’s long-term infrastructure investment needs. We must have a multi-year funding commitment to provide market certainty, so planners can plan, and business can invest. This is how the private sector creates jobs.”
A Hard Number Look at the Need for Infrastructure Investment Dennis Slater, president of the Association of Equipment Manufacturers recently spoke before a meeting of senators about the state of the construction industry. He had the following to report: • 1.25 million. That’s how many jobs the construction equipment industry supported in 2008. • 550,000. That’s how many jobs the construction equipment industry has lost in this recession. • 50 percent. That’s how much employment in the construction equipment manufacturing sector alone has declined since 2006. • 22,000 deaths annually are related to deficient roadway conditions. • Commuters in major urban areas waste 4.2 billion hours every year stuck in traffic — costing another $87 billion to the economy in lost productivity and wasted fuel. • At least 33 percent of our nation’s major roads are in poor or mediocre condition and 26 percent of bridges are structurally deficient or functionally obsolete. • $225 billion. According to the Surface Transportation Policy and Revenue Study Commission, the U.S. needs to spend $225 billion annually for the next 50 years to upgrade our surface transportation system. We are spending less than 40 percent of this amount today. • $350. That’s how much wealth is returned to the economy for every $100 invested in infrastructure, according to a University of Maryland study. • 35,000. According to the Department of Labor, 35,000 jobs are created for every $1 billion spent on infrastructure.

A $2.1 million emergency contract was awarded to Charles Blalock & Sons of Sevierville and highway officials had said after the Nov. 10 slide that the cleanup would take at least two months. According to TDOT’s Web site, by the end of January crews were assembling a new 150-ton crane to be used to install the bolts along the rock face. Approximately 200 bolts, with a 2-in. (5 cm) diameter, ranging from 10 to 25 ft. (3 to 7.6 m) long will be driven into the mountainside. The contractor was planning to remove debris that was generated by recent blasting from the roadway so that a crane pad could be constructed for the new crane. TDOT Commissioner Gerald Nicely said in a statement that the slide has been a major inconvenience for residents of Copperhill and Ducktown and everything is being done to get the highway reopened as quickly as possible.
Smaller cranes on site are being used for a variety of jobs, including lifting and turning the delivery trucks around because there is no space on the site for the trucks to turn.

Fundamental Fixes Equal Less Spending, Longer Tool Life Today’s economic realities now demand using every trick of the trade in order to make equipment last longer while squeezing every excess expense – including constantly purchasing new tools – out of the balance sheet. Jerry R. Fifer, technical support manager southeast of Tramac said maintenance gaffes that cost companies both in tool wear and big money for replacements come down to four basics: • All grease is the same, right? The Fault: Breaker tools or points become extremely hot (as high as 400 F or more) when in use. At those temperatures, standard lube grease will liquefy and run off the tool or actually burn up entirely, leaving a shorter lifespan for tools’bushings and broken tools. The Fix: Good grease. Breaker grease should be, at minimum, No. 2 lithium-based grease containing 3 percent molybdenum. It should be rated to work at temperatures of at least 500 F or more). Why is the molybdenum a “must have”? It helps the grease stick to the tool and not run off.
• Where do I grease it? The Fault: Failing to put enough grease on and applying it in the wrong way can be just as bad as using low-quality product. The Fix: Start with a quick examination. When the breaker is raised vertically off the ground, the tool will drop down and expose the portion that is in contact with the lower tool bushing. The condition of this exposed portion is indicative of the condition of the upper, unexposed sections. The exposed portion should be thoroughly covered with grease. But how to apply it? Use an automatic greaser (if available) and set it to apply grease only when the breaker is operating. If the automatic greaser runs while the breaker tool has dropped down (see above) grease will be deposited on the top of the tool. Then the next time the breaker is used the grease (now trapped between the top of the breaker tool and the bottom of the strike piston) will be forced through the lower piston seals and damage them. If applying lubricant manually, the tool must be pushed upward into the breaker before greasing. This is easy to do by
lowering the breaker vertically and pressing the tool against the ground. The bottom line: using the proper amount of high-quality grease and putting it on in the right way greatly reduces the friction wear on the tool and tool bushings. • When is it time to inspect? The Fault: Tool tops not checked regularly lead to more damage overall. The Fix: The top of the tool takes a tremendous beating from the strike piston. Eventually, the tool top’s surface will mushroom just like the top of a mechanic’s cold chisel or punch. It is important that the mushrooming areas be filed off before they become so large that they break off. Broken pieces of the tool can get trapped between the tool and the strike piston, resulting in piston damage. Also be sure to check for damage on the areas of the tool that strike the tool retainers. Any mushrooming or other faults must be filed off at regularly. An important reminder: different types of breaker applications will result in more or less tool damage. Inspect and service the tool once a week until experience teaches you
how long your service intervals can be. • When do I replace the bushings? The Fault: Wear limits on bushings are routinely misjudged, resulting in piston damage and shortened lifespan on other parts. The Fix: All breaker tool bushings have a specified inner diameter wear limit. When this limit is reached, most bushings appear to have plenty of material left to wear off and are usually not replaced as recommended. But the key is to remember that the wear limit is not based on how much material is left but on the possible angle of engagement between the tool and strike piston. The lower bushing will be the first to wear out. If it is allowed to wear past the limit, the tool can be at such an angle to the piston that the piston only hits the tool on the edge of the strike surface. Continuing to operate the breaker in this way will damage the strike piston. In addition, wear on the upper bushing is accelerated when the lower bushing is worn out. The lifespan of the upper bushing can be extended by replacing the lower bushing when the wear limit is reached.

SE Equipment Inc. Expands With Two New Dealerships
Mike Gardiner has joined the sales team at the new Bobcat of Charleston location.
By Jennifer Hetrick CEG CORRESPONDENT
SE Equipment Inc. recently expanded into two new areas, bringing the number of Bobcat dealerships in the group up from three to five. Bobcat of Charleston, S.C.’s new location

According to John Hopper, general manager, SE Equipment, the decision to expand in difficult times was really a matter of keeping to the company’s standards. “While the economy is tough it brings about opportunity and our strategy hasn’t changed. for the bidding information showed wetlands but, based on borings, didn’t indicate standing water. ”We’re basically building the job in the middle of a lake.” They didn’t have an approved erosion-control plan, just a generic plan, when they were given the job, he said. They hadn’t yet physically gone through the wetlands when they submitted the plan for a general notice of intent. “We have had to work with the DOT and water management district on developing a plan to work through the standing water,” Eliason said. “These conditions require daily monitoring of the site conditions and construction process to determine if any adjustments or corrections to the proposed plan are needed.” There are creeks and lakes all around the project, and turbidity is an ongoing concern, requiring daily monitoring, he said. The plan includes isolating the job with berms and then coming back to remove the trapped water so they can build to grade, Eliason said. The two-lane overpass is being constructed about 700 ft. (213 m) south of the existing roadway and will have 12-ft. (3.6 m) travel lanes and 10-ft. (3 m) shoulders, according to FDOT. The road will tie back into Fla. 26 about three-quarters of a mi. east and west of the existing intersection, with connector roads being constructed to access the current at-grade intersection and local businesses, Eliason said. The scope of the contract includes approximately 450,000 cu. yds. (344,049 cu. m) of embankment, 71,600 sq. yds. (59,866 sq. m) stabilization, 52,000 sq. yds. (43,478 sq. m) of base, the construction of a new storm drainage system and box culvert as well as the new bridge, he said. Track excavators, bulldozers, wheel loaders, vibratory rollers, motorgraders, cranes and a rubbertire hoe are working on the job, Eliason said. It’s a mixture of owned and rented equipment, he said. The motorgraders are all Caterpillars, and all the excavators
in the company except for a Hitachi 450 are Komatsus, Eliason said. Most of the dozers are John Deeres, including a John Deere 750 dozer being used to push fill and a John Deere 650 dozer being used to do fine grading on the embankment. “We’ve got a lot of embankment on the project,” he said, noting the company hopes to have all the embankment in place by the time the rainy season rolls around again, usually July. The company will be renting a

Approximately 400,000 cu. yds. (305,821 cu m) of fill is being imported from surrounding fill sources to augment the approximately 50,000 cu. yd. (38,228 cu m) of fill on site from the pond construction.

crane, but the deal hasn’t been finalized, Eliason said. Southland currently services most of its equipment in-house, but Neff Rental and Linder Industrial Machinery Company handle the service on the company’s newer equipment and rentals, he said. The project will involve a substantial amount of borrow.
“We are importing approximately 400,000 cubic yards of fill from surrounding fill sources,“ Eliason said. “We will have approximately 50,000 cubic yards of fill on site from the pond construction.” The job will entail nearly 1,100 cu. yds. (841 cu m) of concrete and 12,000 tons (10,886 t) of asphalt, he said.
The concrete bridge will require 787.30 cu. yds. (601.89 cu m) of concrete, with the box culvert having 300 cu. yds. (229 cu m) of concrete, Eliason said. As for the asphalt, the project calls for 7,400 tons (6,713 t) for structural and 4,600 tons (4,173 t) for friction, he said. The project will entail the use of two pipe crews, two earthwork crews, two grade crews and a bridge crew, Eliason said. “These crews will be phased in and off the project, so the project will probably maintain a level of around 20 employees on any given day,” he said. “Currently, our schedule only necessitates daytime work Monday through Friday.” Subcontractors working on the project include Ed Smith Construction Company of Atlanta, box culvert; Steven Counts Inc. of Ocala, Fla., asphalt base, structural paving and friction; JVD Construction Inc. of Altamonte Springs, Fla., barrier wall; Infinity Reinforcing Inc. of Palm Coast, Fla., rebar; RES Construction of Orlando, MSE wall; W&S, shoulder gutter; Belcorp Inc., sod; Geotechnical Foundations, pile driving; A-1 Sod, erosion control; Protection Services Inc., traffic management; and PSI, quality control. The project isn’t adding much to the traffic headaches at the intersection beyond some minor lane closures on U.S. 301 to accommodate the bridge construction, Eliason said. “Most of the project is outside of
the existing roadway footprint,“ he said. “We will have minor traffic reconfigurations and detours when we tie in the road in the final project phases.“ The job is on the eastern edge of Alachua County, roughly a dozen miles from Gainesville, Fla., where it is called University Avenue, Eliason said. “State Road 26 is a major eastwest artery for Gainesville,” he said, “and traffic tends to build up at the intersection during commuting hours in the morning and afternoon … The project is also going to alleviate some of the safety issues concerning the junction of these two major roadways and the railroad in a relatively rural area.” According to FDOT, more than 9,500 vehicles travel daily on Fla. 26 and more than 11,000 travel daily on U.S. 301. And the numbers increase during University of Florida home football games when fans travel to the school on those roads. Meanwhile, rail traffic is forecast to increase substantially on the line, meaning more trains to back up Fla. 26 traffic waiting to cross the tracks, Eliason said. It also could mean more dangerous situations for Fla. 26 traffic backed up at the tracks waiting to travel through the U.S. 301 intersection, he said, noting that the overpass will thin Fla. 26 traffic through the intersection and thus improve safety there. Southland was attracted to the low-bid contract for several reasons, Eliason said. “The project was an opportunity to expand our region to DOT District 2, said Eliason, noting the company did work in District 2 several years ago but has not had a large presence in the District recently. “Southland was attracted to the balanced mix of roadwork and bridge construction in the scope,” he said. “We believe that our roadwork and pipe experience is second to none, and this project also allowed us to continue to develop our burgeoning bridge division.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) Eaton Launches Hydraulic Hybrid Retrofit Program Eaton Corporation will begin offering retrofit versions of its Hydraulic Launch Assist — HLA hybrid power system for refuse trucks later this year. The Refuse Retrofit Program will be offered through select qualified partners and installers. Eaton is currently seeking partners for the program. “By retrofitting existing trucks, Eaton is giving our customers a best-of-both-worlds scenario,” said Seth Deutsch, manager — Hybrid Market Planning. “Until now, our refuse market customers in North America have been frustrated in their efforts to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions in fleets of newer trucks with many years of service left in them. They have been asking for a hybrid solution that does not require the purchase of a new truck, and we’re
pleased to deliver the retrofit option.” The Eaton Hydraulic Launch Assist (HLA) system is a parallel hybrid system, in which the conventional powertrain is supplemented by the addition of the hydraulic system that propels the truck forward and helps slow it down. The system is best suited for vehicles that operate in stop and go duty cycles such as refuse trucks. Benefits of the system include 20 to 30 percent improvement in fuel economy, longer brake life, and increased productivity due to the extra power the HLA system provides. Eaton hybrid electric, plug-in hybrid electric and two hybrid hydraulic power systems, parallel and series, are available or in development on truck models

and Solaris. Eaton hybrid power systems have accumulated more than 30 million miles of road-tested service around the world. Companies such as FedEx, UPS, Coca-Cola Enterprises, PepsiCo and Wal-Mart are using delivery vehicles with the Eaton system. Work trucks with Eaton hybrid power also are in service at Florida Power and Light and many utility and telecom companies across North America. Benefits of the existing Eaton hybrid systems include fuel savings up to 35 percent, with similar percentages in emission reductions, extended brake life and idle time reductions of up to 87 percent during work site operations. By seamlessly integrating the tire pressure monitoring capability into the DriverTech TruckPC, tire pressures for tractors and trailers can now be monitored in both the truck cab and at fleet headquarters in real-time. While tire pressure was previously the sole domain of the driver, now the responsibility can be shared for improved management of fleet assets. Control of tire-related problems is a major concern for fleets of all sizes, because low tire pressures reduce fuel efficiency, and significantly shorten the service life of tires. In addition to saving maintenance and operating costs, real-time monitoring of tire pressures allows drivers and fleet managers to
coordinate scheduled repairs to avoid costly (and potentially catastrophic) roadside breakdowns and improve the overall safety of the fleet. “We are excited to offer the capability to communicate tire pressure information and critical low pressure warnings to both the driver and fleet managers” said Doran General Manager Jim Samocki. “We are proud to be working with a high-caliber company like DriverTech, to expand their capabilities into tire pressure monitoring.” “Doran’s core operating principles, commitment to the customer and high-energy team made it an easy decision for us when reviewing tire pressure monitoring companies. We have been very impressed with the performance and reliability of the systems and the quality of the team at Doran,” said Mark Haslam — chief executive officer at DriverTech. “The ability to monitor tire pressures and
deliver real-time warnings to both the drivers and fleet managers is a unique capability that we are making available to the trucking industry,” Haslam said. “The combination of our software and Doran’s tire pressure monitoring systems will help fleets improve their efficiency and reduce operating costs.” About Doran Cincinnati-based Doran has been providing transportation safety products for RVs, school buses and commercial trucks for more than 35 years. In addition to tire pressure monitoring systems, the company provides terminals and terminal boards, LED and incandescent exterior light monitors, Sleeping Child Check monitors, emergency exit monitors and a full range of LED lighting products for the school bus market. Crushing, Screening & Recycling Section Material Handler’s Double-Duty Ups Landfill Efficiency
Primarily used to sort debris at the landfill, operators appreciate the visibility that the elevating cab gives them.
The D Series – Sennebogen’s Fourth Generation of Material Handlers Sennebogen was among the first manufacturers to offer the scrap and recycling industries a line of purpose-built material handling equipment in place of excavators retrofitted for unique lifting applications. Today, Sennebogen offers a wide range of material handlers with operating weights ranging from 48,000 to 350,000 lbs. (21,772 to 158,757 kg) in rubber tired, crawler and pedestal versions. The company’s D-Series models are Sennebogen’s fourth generation of material handling machines to America. On the D Series machines, the safety features are centered around the cab. • A sliding door combined with the adjacent catwalk provides an easy and safe way for the operator to step into and out of the cab without the awkwardness of a swinging door hitting the catwalk rail. • Getting to and from the cab is easier with a cab position that provides easy access for the operator via a small set of stairs. • Upgraded climate control systems in the cab create a comfortable atmosphere that keeps operators alert, attentive and undistracted. • Improved access to maintenance areas, such as a centralized undercarriage greasing point, makes maintenance easier and safer. • Tier III emissions-compliant engines.
Gary Brouillette, general manager of the landfill division of Samsula Waste Inc., was shopping around for a dependable material handler to replace the company’s existing machine. After looking over the competition, he chose to purchase a Sennebogen 825 M D Series machine with its Cummins engine, 47 ft. (14.3 m) of reach and enhanced safety features. “In the end, we decided to go with the reliability and dependability of the purpose-built Sennebogen material handler, which is tailor made for our waste, recycling and landfill needs,” said Brouillette. “In the nine months we’ve had our new 825 M, we’ve had absolutely no problems with it — it just runs and runs. All we’ve done so far is routine maintenance. That’s the kind of uptime and productivity we expect and require of our equipment.” Samsula Landfill is one of the four divisions of the parent compa-

ny Samsula Waste Inc., which was founded in 1980 by company President Yancey McDonald. Spread out over approximately 67 acres, the landfill division employs 30 people and serves the counties of Volusia, Flagler and Brevard in mid-eastern Florida. The experienced team at Samsula Landfill provides service to residential, commercial and industrial customers, including construction and waste companies and general contractors. Sennebogen 825 M Does Double-Duty at Samsula Fitted with a Gensco five-tine grapple with a magnet, the Sennebogen 825 M D Series is being used primarily to separate construction and demolition debris at the landfill site. It also is used to feed a horizontal wood grinder. Samsula went with a rubber-tired machine to enable operators to get around the yard quickly and effi-
ciently. The cab on the 825 D Series is loaded with new features designed to increase operator efficiency, comfort and productivity, including a sliding door combined with the adjacent catwalk, improved access to maintenance areas, and upgraded climate control systems, according to the company. Moving up to the bigger machine with its Tier III emissions-compliant 204 hp (152 kW) Cummins engine has increased the site’s productivity, according to Brouillette. “Since we took possession of it , more often than not we’ve been running the Sennebogen 825 M ten hours a day, six days a week and we haven’t had to do one thing to it,” said Brouillette. “The Cummins engine in the 825 M makes a world of difference. And, of course, the 47 feet of reach on the machine is a real bonus.”

Vermeer Compost Turner Does More With Less Space Vermeer Corporation has introduced a self-propelled compost turner with elevating-face technology. The CT1010TX compost turner can be used on compost sites with either continuous-stack or windrow configurations and provides minimal unwanted degradation to the organic material. The CT1010TX helps compost sites make the best use of their space. By utilizing the optional conveyor, compost sites can create a continuous stack configuration, eliminating the need for open space between the windrows. This allows for three to four times more material to be placed in the same space as conventional windrow composting, according to the manufacturer. “Space is a premium in composting sites,” said Chris Nichols, environmental sales manager of Vermeer Corporation. “The CT1010TX allows compost sites to stack more material in less space. But the unit also works well in windrow configurations.” Powered by a 215 hp (160 kW) Cummins QSB 6.7 L engine, the CT1010TX can process up to 2,500 to 4,000 cu. yds. (1,911 to 3,058 cu m) of compost per hour, depending on the type of material and moisture content. The CT1010TX turns a stack 10 ft. (3 m) wide and 9 ft. (2.7 m) high.
The unit is propelled by a dual steel track system, which helps increase traction over wheeled units and produces less ground pressure when working in nonpaved compost sites. Amaximum speed of 0 to 3.2 mph (0 to 5.1 kmh) in the high range helps with transport and cycle times, while the 0 to 6.5 fpm (0 to 2.0 mpm) in low range provides enhanced control in wet and heavy material. SmartTrack, an advanced control system, monitors elevating-face pressure and will slow or stop the ground drive when the elevating-face pressure reaches a pre- Vermeer’s CT1010TX self-propelled compost determined level. The CT1010TX cab includes a variety of features designed for operator convenience and comfort, including a fully adjustable seat, cab pressurization with self-adjusting climate controls, 12 volt accessory plug-ins, AM/FM/CD sound system and large windows with front and side wiper/washer systems. An active-carbon cab air filtration system aids in removing odors and fumes, as well as dust and dirt particles. The elevating face, optional conveyor and ground drive functions are all controlled with comfortable ergonomic dual joystick controls, minimizing operator movements and reducing fatigue. A single switch staggers the start and stop functions of the conveyor and elevating face. This feature helps prevent operator error that could result in potential plugging of the conveyor, according to the manufacturer. Separate reversible hydrostatic pumps control the dual tracks, elevating face and optional conveyor providing the operator complete and independent control of the primary machine functions. Large Grinder a Perfect Fit for Disaster Recovery Firm The recent devastating ice storms in Kentucky and Arkansas once again raised awareness of nature’s power and how helpless man is against it. Events like those, however, also spotlight the valuable role played by companies who come in during the recovery effort to help an area restore some semblance of normalcy. Last year, one such firm, Bamaco Inc., headed to the Houston suburb of Baytown to tackle the cleanup from the onslaught of Hurricane Ike. While its primary goal was, obviously, the recovery effort, the firm also chose the Baytown site as an opportunity to modify its approach to processing the nearly one million cubic yards of wood waste it encountered. At the center of that modification was the replacement of a pair of 1,000 hp (745 kW) grinders with a single, 1,200 hp (894.5 kW) Morbark Model 1600 tub — the largest tub grinder in the manufacturer’s line. By project’s end, Bamaco had not only upped production, it also had improved onsite efficiency and safety, and lowered operating costs. It also found itself facing another huge challenge, one it hadn’t foreseen: finding a way to keep the new grinder fed. What’s in a Name? Despite the fact that all the family members who head up Bamaco hail from Alabama, the company name has a totally different significance, said Jeff Mitchell, Bamaco’s assistant vice president. “The name is actually an acronym for ‘Beverly and Mike and Company’ — Beverly being my mom and Mike being my father” — said Mitchell. “My dad has better than 30 years experience doing this type of work throughout the southeast, so he’s no stranger to disaster recovery. However, in 2002, he decided to incorporate under the Bamaco name and bring my brother Jason and myself on board.” Today the Bunnell, Fla.-based firm operates nationwide, tackling a broad range of projects including hurricane clean-up; debris removal from other “events” such as ice storms, tornadoes, etc.; hazardous materials removal; demolition; beach restoration; canal restoration and more.
“We are almost constantly on the road,” said Mitchell. “Down south during hurricane season, up north when the ice storms hit, you name it. We have a huge number of pre-positioned contracts in place that allow us to come into an area quickly after a storm hits. In fact, we were in Baytown the day after Ike went through the area. Getting these areas cleaned up and getting people back on their feet is our primary goal; having those contracts in place streamlines the process and gets us working toward that goal.” Unbelievable Volumes Having worked all the major hurricanes in recent memory, Bamaco was no stranger to largescale cleanups. Nevertheless, upon arrival at Baytown, it was still astounded at the volume of material they were facing. “We were in charge of about six separate collection sites around Baytown and some of them were just filled to capacity, with more debris being picked up daily,” said Mitchell. “To make a real dent in the volume, we subcontracted out to several other grinding firms who owned their own machines. Their challenge was to try to grind it and haul it out as fast as it was coming in. Unfortunately, that was rarely the case. Their grinders were pushed to the max but just couldn’t keep up with the inflow of material.” Mitchell said that, despite pushing the pair of 1,000 hp units Bamaco owned to the limit, they were struggling to keep up with volumes at the main Baytown site at which they were processing. A different approach was needed and a mutual friend of the Mitchells had what they thought just might be the answer. Supersizing It The potential solution to which the Mitchells referred was a Morbark Model 1600, a 1,200 hp tub grinder that the friend in question had seen work firsthand in Florida. “He saw he 1600 in action and said that it was just an unbelievable piece of equipment,” said Mitchell. “He swore that anyone using it would need more than a couple of medium-sized excavators to keep
up with its production. We, of course, were a bit skeptical, but wanted to see what it could do. So we called John Dale, the Morbark sales rep for this area and within 24 hours he had it down here for a demo.” The demo apparently put to rest any suspicion that Mitchell’s friend had overstated the 1600’s potential. “We couldn’t believe what it could do in terms of production,” said Mitchell. “Morbark told us the
“In our business, we mostly have to work with the hand we are dealt. Often, that can mean smallacreage lots, and debris coming in at a 50,000 yard-a-day clip. In order to get it ground up and hauled off as fast as it’s coming in, we’ve needed a minimum of three machines grinding and at least that many other loaders feeding them. The Model 1600 has allowed us to actually increase production while reducing the equipment and man-

machine is rated for as much as 1,400 cubic yards an hour — we feel that’s a really conservative estimate. We bought the unit just a couple days after the demo and since then it has exceeded our expectations on almost every count.” Command Performance Given the successful results of the test, the 1600 had to be extremely impressive onsite to make any more of an impact on the Mitchells — and it was. Jason Mitchell said the unit was put to the test immediately upon going into service and more than met the challenge. “We had a stockpile built up at the large site that was probably in excess of 100,000 cubic yards. We knew from working another location that was similarly backlogged, that a trio of 1,000 hp horizontals had to work round-the clock for four days to get that material processed. We came in here with just the 1600 and — working only a single shift each day — did the same volume in three days. That won us over in a hurry.” Jason said the benefits provided by the larger machine go much further that simply how much material comes off the discharge conveyor each hour.
power needed. That’s a huge benefit to us: having fewer machines means a better ability to control onsite traffic flow, improved safety, lower operating costs, and so on. It’s really made a big impact on the way we operate.” Bigger Iron Ahead With throughputs at higher levels than it had ever experienced, Bamaco’s new dilemma was finding the best method possible to keep it fed. Though it made do with the pair of mid-sized excavators — a Cat 320 and a Hitachi Zaxis 200 — it found them anything but efficient for loading the new grinder. “There’s no doubt that on future projects we will have larger machines — probably a pair of 90,000 lb. machines like a Cat 330 or something similar,” said Jason. “The smaller machines were constantly struggling to keep the 1600 fed and we were only running the grinder at 42 percent of its maximum power.” According to Jason, there was one occasion where they ran the unit at full power — just to see what it could do. He said the tub was empty after only three or four revolutions. “We backed it down and never ran it full out on that job again. So,
essentially we ran the grinder at less than half power for the length of the project and it still easily outperformed three horizontals. That to me says it was more than worth the investment.” The Name Says It All Bamaco is a strong proponent of customer service and demands the same from its equipment suppliers. Jeff said they were impressed with the support they received from Morbark from the outset and continue to be so even today, well after the sale. “First of all, the grinder itself is designed to be user-friendly and minimize maintenance concerns. We run the machine for four hours, shut it down to do regular preventive maintenance such as greasing, air filter blow-outs, and so on, and resume for another four hours. Morbark, as a company, however, is equally impressive. They were right out here when we needed them for a demo; they stayed on to make sure we were running without any issues; and they made a service technician available to use throughout the time we were doing the Baytown job. That kind of service is invaluable.” Moving up to the larger grinder does, of course, entail additional expenditure. When pressed whether those costs will prove justifiable, both Jeff and Jason Mitchell are hard-pressed to hold back their enthusiasm. “There’s no doubt in our minds that, over one busy hurricane season in Florida, the Morbark will pay for itself many times over. As a matter of fact, we probably did better than 900,000 yards at Baytown, more than half of which went through the Model 1600. There’s a good chance it might have come close to paying for itself on that job alone. Our business is centered around finding ways to get the job done in the safest, fastest, most efficient manner possible. While we initially chose the 1600 based on the impressive volumes of material it could handle, we’ve since come to find that the benefits of adding the machine run far deeper than that — and that’s a really nice plus for us.”

equipment and forklifts through its dealer network and providing additional sales, service and parts support through the home office in Elk Grove Village, Ill. “With the current market conditions being what they are we’ve had to look at all aspects of our business. We feel that by consolidating the resources we have here and in Korea under one roof covering all of the Americas we can provide our dealers and ultimately our customers with the highest level of quality and support possible. It’s important to us that when our customers think of product quality and support that they think of Hyundai,” said John Lim, president of Hyundai Construction Equipment U.S.A. Inc. A corporate name change for Hyundai Construction Equipment U.S.A. Two Taxes Floated to Pay for Road Repairs in Ark. LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) Two taxes are emerging as a way to raise money to pay for road repairs in Arkansas. But a spokesman for the governor said any tax increase will be a tough sell in the Legislature during a recession. A subcommittee of the Arkansas Blue Ribbon Committee on Highway Finance is discussing an excise tax on the wholesale cost of fuel and indexing taxes on diesel and gasoline to highway construction costs. Members of the subcommittee say the two taxes would raise at least an additional $200 million a year for the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD). AHTD said it will have $4.1 billion for construction over the next decade but has needs totaling $19.1 billion. Each tax would require a three-fourths majority vote in the Legislature to pass.
