SRM Concrete’s Huge Success Due to Teamwork of Family By Eric Olson CEG CONTRIBUTING EDITOR

Back in 1999, Mike and Melissa Hollingshead decided that they needed to build a ready-mix concrete plant in their own Middle Tennessee backyard. An unusual choice for most folks, certainly, but Mike did so only because he was often frustrated in getting the materials he needed to run his small concrete business. What’s more unusual is the fact that in only 22 years, Mike and Melissa’s operation is today a huge company that employs a staggering 4,000 employees working in 13 states. Smyrna Ready Mix Concrete, better known as SRM Concrete, offers a range of services, but its concentration on ready-mix, mining and materials production has made it one of the fastest growing operations in the eastern half of the United States. Today, SRM is still rooted in providing superior customer service, just as it was in the early days when the personal touch was key to the growth of Mike Hollingshead’s company.

Ryan Hollingshead (L), president of SRM Aggregates, and Mike Hollingshead, founder of SRM Concrete.

How Did They Do It? The level of drive, determination and faith that the Hollingshead family possesses is clearly behind SRM Concrete’s success. “Dad was in the ready-mix business working for himself finishing driveways and patios locally, but he kept getting poor service from a distributor due to the larger jobs they had going,” said Ryan Hollingshead, Mike’s son, and the current president of SRM Aggregates, a division of the larger company. “That is what made him want to put up his own concrete plant.” Although it was not an inexpensive proposition to do so, and with little money of their own, the couple scraped together enough to erect what is today known as Smyrna Plant 1, a larger and still fully operational facility at 4500 Hickory Grove Road in Murfreesboro. “[Dad] did not have a clue going in about what he was doing, and he had to work through that, but he had the good Lord’s grace on his side,” Ryan added. Within six months of launching SRM Concrete, though,

other area concrete finishers took note of the new plant and began ordering from the family business. Having Ryan as president of one of SRM’s major divisions, and his other son, Jeff, serve as both company CEO and the family member in charge of the ready-mix operations, has allowed Mike Hollingshead in 2021 to enjoy his status as founder and owner. But that’s not to say he isn’t involved with SRM’s operations. “I can assure you that my dad is heavily involved in everything he can get his hands on,” Ryan said with a laugh.”We don’t have the turmoil you sometimes see in family-owned businesses. We have a good relationship that is carried over to our business. It means so much more because we are working as a team, and we do everything together outside of work, like go to church and go on vacations.” Product Offerings, Acquisitions Grow SRM Interestingly, the younger Hollingshead said that in 2014, SRM Concrete was able to buy out the ready-mix company that had earlier denied his father the products he needed for his one-man projects, which, in turn, led to the creation of the large multi-service firm. see SRM page 28

Miami Pauses Work On ‘Deepest’ Underground Garage Miami building officials decided to pause construction of the city’s “deepest” subterranean parking garage Nov. 16 to conduct a holistic engineering evaluation following a series of groundwater breaches and complaints from concerned Brickell residents. The garage is beneath the Una Residences luxury condominium tower in Miami’s Brickell neighborhood. Local developer OKO Group proposes a 47-story residential tower at the site, with units starting at $2 million. It also will include a three-level basement, which the developer touts as “Miami’s deepest, most expensive underground garage.” However, since October, two breaches of the water table have occurred at the site, located at 175 SE 25th Rd., and residents of neighboring properties have voiced their concerns about the impact the breaches could have on their buildings, especially in the wake of last summer’s deadly Surfside condo collapse. An aerial view of the evacuation site Nov. 16 showed the pooling of water in a different section of the cavernous pit where water bubbled to the surface on Nov. 12 in a second breach. A spokesperson of Miami-Dade County’s Department of Regulatory & Economic Resources (DERM) told WPLG-TV Local 10 News in Miami that the water “will keep coming into the site” until engineers fix “what’s known as the tremie seal.” The agency considers the issue to be an operational one rather than an environmental violation. Those same officials noted that Nov. 12’s breach was capped by engineers Nov. 17 and a stop-work order on this project was issued. Currently, three engineers have been brought in to evaluate what impact, if any, the project is having on surrounding properties. This will include a geotechnical engineer, a structural engineer and a seismic testing engineer. Miami Commissioner Ken Russell said this was being done as a precautionary measure and that the building department will cover all costs and the trio of engineers will report their findings to the city. Mandy Karnauskas lives in Brickell Townhouse, next to the Una Residences under construction. In speaking with WPLG-TV, she said the second upwelling of water at Una happened one day after her management company sent residents an email saying that their structural engineer claimed their property is experiencing impacts from the construction site’s first breach in October. The management company claimed the project is causing soil erosion, which has caused the brick pavers in their tiki hut area to shift.

“We see the ground actually moving, a piece of our property is sinking, and our little tiki picnic huts are starting to keel over,” Karnauskas said. Ant Yapi, of Civic Construction in Miami, the general contractor of Una Residences, has stated that “our team is remediating these leaks as they happen, and there is no evidence of impacts on surrounding properties.” Experts Call for Thorough Exam of Site “I think it is a very good idea to pause and

check the situation,” said Shimon Wdowinski, of Florida International University’s Institute of Environment. He is an expert in land subsidence, sea-level rise, sinkhole activities, wetland hydrology, earthquakes and other natural hazards. Wdowinski explained that the geotechnical engineer at Una Residences will “deal with the earth underneath the buildings” to “evaluate the property of the soil at the building site or next to the building site to see if there were any changes to the soil.” In addition, he said the role of a structural engineer would be to evaluate if there is “any

damage to the buildings” with an analysis that would consist of “looking [to see] if the columns or the walls or any new cracks formed in the building, [and] to see if there were any changes to the building itself.” As for the seismic testing engineer, he told the Miami television station that that person would collect data about “the movement of the ground — the elastic movement of the ground — to see how much movement in the vicinity of the building” may be happening to “evaluate if there is a problem that may cause damage to the buildings.” see GARAGE page 34

Since October, two breaches of the water table have occurred at the site, located at 175 SE 25th Rd.

R.S. Braswell Co. Opens New Bobcat Facility in Rock Hill

The new Bobcat dealership in Rock Hill operates at 939 S. Anderson Rd., just off Interstate 77’s Exit 77.

R.S. Braswell Co. has for more than 70 years been a trusted name in supplying contractors with the equipment they need to build their best projects. In the beginning, its primary line was selling top-quality forklifts. Later, in the late 1960s, R.S. Braswell became the first dealer of Bobcat skid-steer loaders in the Carolinas from its base in Kannapolis, N.C. Through the years, with the help of a highly trained staff, the company is today a market leader in supplying Bobcat equipment throughout the two states. While the company headquarters are in Kannapolis, N.C., north of Charlotte, R.S. Braswell also maintains full-service Bobcat dealerships in the Queen City and nearby Monroe, N.C. On Dec. 1, R.S. Braswell unveiled its latest Bobcat facility in Rock Hill, S.C., because, as company President Steve Thigpen said, the firm recognized the steady growth of equipment sales in the rapidly developing area south of Charlotte.

The new Bobcat store was the result of two years of careful consideration and planning by the parent company. The store is in York County, S.C., which will be more convenient for its customers there, as well as for those in the adjacent counties of Lancaster and Chester. “We needed a new facility in South Carolina to better service our customers with sales, parts, service and rentals,” Thigpen said. “In the few days that it has been open, we have received great feedback.” R.S. Braswell’s Bobcat customers in the region, he added, are primarily working in all areas of construction, agriculture and industry. Many of them call on Bobcat to rent equipment, also. Lex Hannon (L), sales, and Randy Warrington, operations manager, both of Bobcat of Rock Hill.

As of Dec. 1, 2021, contractors can add Bobcat equipment their fleets from R.S. Braswell’s new facility in Rock Hill, S.C.

The new facility includes 10 service bays and a total of 8,000-sq.-ft. for the technicians to do their work.

(L-R): The parts and service team of Bobcat of Rock Hill includes Nick Johnson, service technician; D.J. Boykin, service technician; Tim Frazier, service manager; and Chris Shockley, parts manager.

Construction work began recently on the new oil and refined products terminal project in Plaquemines Parish, La. Occupying 158 acres on the lower Mississippi River, the NOLA Oil Terminal will be the first of its kind in the region, allowing access for much larger vessels than before, including Panamax and Suezmax tankers. “Crude oil and clean petroleum products are significant trade products for Louisiana, but we aren’t able to take advantage of the larger vessels,” Christian Amedee, COO of NOLA Oil Terminal, said in a statement. “This terminal will be the first in the area to be able to accommodate vessels that currently are too large and deep to dock in the Mississippi River or in most Gulf of Mexico and Eastern Seaboard ports. The project, when completed, will be the newest facility along the lower Mississippi River and is poised to add further value by offering blending, storing and transferring needs with a superior geographical location. NOLA Oil Terminal also will be only the Mississippi River wharf to handle 1,200-ft. vessels. The initial water-side phase of the project includes two deep water berths able to accommodate large tankers and one barge dock. These two berths will be capable of mooring 170,000-ton vessels. The barge dock will serve both inland and oceangoing tank barges. Financing for the first phase of the project, a $300 million wharf and dock bond funding, was the largest bond issue approved by the Port of Plaquemines in more than 50 years. The total project is projected to cost $930 million. In addition to opening new channels to import and export crude oil and other clean petroleum products, NOLA Oil Terminal expects to create more than 1,000 construction jobs through completion of phases one and two. The completed terminal is expected to sustain from 30 to 40 permanent jobs in Plaquemines Parish. Phase one, the wharves and docks, is projected to be completed in mid-2022. All required permits are in place, and site preparation including site clearing, open channel drainage, construction access roadways, geotechnical investigations and pile load tests, and environmental studies have been finished. The land-side section that encompasses Phase two remains in the development phase and no timeline has yet been announced for this work. Once the NOLA Oil Terminal is completed and operational, it will be able to accommodate up to six tankers each week. The completed structure, which will be built within Phase two, is expected to have a storage capacity of up to 10 million barrels. The company also has options to add refined products to the facility. Separately, Plaquemines Port also is looking at building a large container terminal approximately 50 mi. from the Gulf of Mexico. In May 2021, APM Terminals entered into an agreement to explore the development of the multi-modal facility. The proposal calls for up to 1,000 acres and 8,200 ft. of Mississippi River frontage. Phase One of construction for that container terminal is expected to require two years and would provide the capability to handle 22,000-TEU class vessels with the ability to expand capacity if needed. 

Case Power & Equipment of Florida will offer the full line of Case products and services and will operate independently of EquipmentShare's rental operations in the state. "The Florida construction market is one of the fastest-growing and most diverse in North America, and the new Case Power & Equipment of Florida locations operated by EquipmentShare bring a whole new approach and dedication to construction equipment in the region," said Terry Dolan, vice president — North America, Case Construction Equipment. "The company brings a fresh, technologydriven approach to equipment sales and service that will highlight the innovative solutions Case is bringing to market, while

also supporting the uptime and productivity of existing Case customers in Florida." "It's an honor to be able to join forces with these team members and build upon the outstanding reputation they've created in Florida," EquipmentShare CEO and Cofounder Jabbok Schlacks said. "The well-established brand and history that Case brings to the table paired with our innovative approach to solving contractor problems make Case Power & Equipment of Florida the source for construction equipment. "This expansion will support the growing demand that we are experiencing in the region. A readily available fleet combined with a knowledgeable hardworking team already on the ground will accelerate our ability to bring a new tech-powered rental experience to more customers in the area.

And we look forward to supporting the existing network of Trekker Tractor customers in the region with their equipment and service needs," Schlacks said. "We also share a commitment to supporting and giving back to the communities we work in — we look forward to working with businesses all throughout the state of Florida to deliver equipment solutions and service that will take the local construction market to the next level." The acquisition and name change are effective immediately, and Case Power & Equipment of Florida now represents the new, used, parts and service businesses for Case at these six locations — also effective immediately. Trekker Group's founding partners are part of the legacy of Puerto Rico Wire Group, which was established in 1955 by

Jose Cestero Jimenez and Sara Yordan Fonalleras. In 2010, Puerto Rico Wire Group's leadership founded Trekker Tractor in Florida. Trekker Tractor, which also serves the southeastern region of the United States, has been operated by three family generations. The assets and operations from the six locations newly acquired by EquipmentShare have served construction, utility and industrial customers in Florida — most recently as the flagship sales and service locations of Case, as well as other brands. "For the past 10 years, I've had the privilege of working with outstanding individuals at Trekker Tractor," Jose Cestero Ramirez, CEO of Puerto Rico Wire Group, said. "We have developed close relationships with our partners, brands and each other for the past 60 years. I have full confidence that those relationships will continue to flourish with this acquisition. Our employees have a long history of providing our customers with the absolute best experience possible, and now, our employees can help make history with a growing business forging a new path in the equipment industry. SRM Offers Customers Broad Range of Products, Services SRM from page 8

That acquisition was just one of many that SRM Concrete made over the years as its coffers grew and it identified opportunities to move into new markets. What was once a simple ready-mix plant is now a company capable of handling the multiple needs of countless numbers of building contractors. The SRM Materials Division, for instance, provides a vast range of products made or mined at facilities from Michigan to Florida, and as far west as Texas. The division is only a few years old but already counts 16 quarries that include plants to create crushed limestone, river rock and natural sand products. SRM expanded its roster of quarries, Ryan noted, in what he described as “an organic fashion” to complement its other existing services in a particular marketplace. “We, of course, are ready-mix driven, so as we acquire ready-mix companies, if we see a need to have a quarry in that area, we will look to obtain one close by,” he said. A sister division, SRM Block, also makes quality concrete block (CMU), architectural block (ACMU) and retaining wall products (SRW). Through SRM Products, the parent company has expanded into building and maintaining facilities to support its different construction services, such as warehouses that stock and deliver a variety of concrete related products, including rebar, wire mesh, form lumber, masonry materials, waterproofing materials, decorative and color materials and finishing tools. In addition, SRM Concrete Pumping Services is strategi-

cally located in the Midwest, Mid-South, and Deep South, while in Nashville, Houston, Detroit and Panama City, Fla., another of its divisions offers harbor delivery services to customers that need their raw materials moved quickly and efficiently. One of SRM’s raw materials divisions, Hollingshead Cement, supplies bulk cement for numerous applications, including ready-mix concrete, block, concrete products, precast concrete and soil stabilization. The company serves bulk cement throughout the Southeast and Midwest United States. Ready-Mix Arm Drives SRM’s Success “We now have over 300 concrete plants, and we have another set of deals coming up in the first quarter of 2022,” Ryan Hollingshead said. From the company’s limestone mines, many in Tennessee and Alabama where the rock is abundant, 10 different aggregate sizes are produced, he said, although other products can be created with screen changes. “Keep in mind that we also have sand mines, granite mines and gravel pits. In addition, we are on the water in Jackson, Ala., about an hour north of Mobile, where we are loading rock and hauling it south to Panama City, Fla.” With its concrete production, SRM concentrates its attention on residential projects, he said, adding that it is working at many large home developments along the East Coast. The company also has been involved in many commercial jobs throughout its territories. Close to home, for example, some of SRM’s largest contracts have included the building

of the downtown Nashville Convention Center, and the nearby Bridgestone Tower. Employee Safety Is Paramount Making sure SRM Concrete follows safe practices within its various divisions is something that has proven to be a demanding task, considering the far-flung nature of the company, its vast number of employees and the type of work that is performed. “My main goal is keeping everyone safe,” Ryan said. “At SRM, we consider safety an investment in our employees, and we want to make sure that our people can clock in and out every day. I know everyone on every site by name, and on the ready-mix side that is difficult because of the sheer number of people we have, but as a family-owned company we all have an open-door policy, so any Hollingshead can be reached, if needed.” SRM Relies Heavily On Power Equipment Through both growth and acquisition, the company has amassed a heavy equipment fleet of more than 400 pieces. When it is time to replace or add new units, SRM Concrete has chosen to purchase all its machinery from Power Equipment’s Nashville branch, a testament to the expertise of the dealership that a construction services company of SRM’s size would rely so heavily upon it. “It really is because of the Power Equipment branch we use, and the whole team that includes Jeff Walker, as well as the phenomenal machine service Robbie Allen provides,” see SRM page 72

Hitachi Construction Machinery Americas Inc. (HCMA) announced that the first medium-sized Hitachi ZX210LC-6 utility hydraulic excavator, built for the North American market, has shipped from Hitachi Construction Machinery Tsuchiura Works (Tsuchiura, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan). The ZX210LC-6 excavator is the first of many Hitachibuilt and branded machines soon to be available throughout North America and Latin America, according to the manufacturer. With the joint venture dissolution between Hitachi Construction Machinery Group and Deere & Company, announced earlier this year, HCMA is committed to independently developing and deploying the latest product advancements, technologies and services throughout the region. To celebrate this important milestone for Hitachi and its customers, the team in Japan responsible for developing and building this first excavator unit gathered to give it a proper sendoff. Draped across the machine is a banner with the phrase “Empowering the Americas — The Lineup Grows More Powerful.” This message signifies HCMA’s commitment to its customers moving into the future. Since 1965, with the introduction of the Hitachi UH03, Japan’s first hydraulic excavator, Hitachi hydraulic excavators have been a flagship product of the Hitachi Construction Machinery portfolio. With a range of models available to meet customers’ specific requirements, these machines excel at leveling and forming work for large-scale residential land and the development of social infrastructure for roads, railways and riverways. Hitachi utility excavators available in the Americas, including the ZX210LC-6 model, are equipped with Solution Linkage Assist, a proprietary machine control feature, which enables efficient work to be performed without over-excavating the target work surface, as well as a hydraulic system that features high-efficiency AERIAL ANGLE technology to help improve worksite safety and the brand’s ConSite OIL service solution. These machines are designed to help contractors in the Americas maintain the quality of work amid labor shortages and the decline in experienced operators, as well as to contribute to improved productivity and safe operation. Local sales for the latest Hitachi-built line of equipment will start in North America in March 2022. For more information, visit www.hitachicm.us. 

New Bobcat Facility Ramps Up R.S. Braswell’s Service BOBCAT from page 18

The building housing the dealership was constructed from the ground up, Thigpen said, beginning last April. J.M. Cope Construction in Rock Hill was the general contractor on the job. The Bobcat facility can take advantage of roughly 14,000-sq.-ft of space on a 4-acre site. That includes 10 service bays and a total of 8,000-sq.-ft. for the technicians to do their work. “Starting out in Rock Hill, we have a service manager overseeing three technicians, and there could be more depending on how quickly we grow,” he said. “There is also one field service truck operating out of that facility. The branch manager there is Randy Warrington, who has been with us about nine years. We have 72 total employees working across all four of our branches, including the eight on the job in Rock Hill.”

The Bobcat facility can take advantage of roughly 14,000-sq.-ft of space on a four-acre site.

Family-Run for 71 Years R.S. Braswell can boast of having kept itself a family company since its formation in 1950. Thigpen’s grandfather — and company namesake Roy Braswell — chose to add Bobcat prod-

ucts to his dealership’s lineup in 1969, which is also when Steve Thigpen’s father, Alton, came aboard. Steve is proud to call himself a thirdgeneration member of such a successful family-owned company. He joined R.S. Braswell Co. in 1991 at the same time the company opened a second store, Bobcat of Charlotte, to satisfy the growing demand for Bobcat equipment in the Charlotte area. The dealership has continued to be an enormous success, allowing Bobcat to maintain its position as the preferred brand of compact loaders and excavators among customers in the Central Carolinas. Eight years later, another location, Bobcat of Monroe, was opened east of Charlotte. That 16,000-sq.-ft. facility gives customers in the Union County area a more convenient access to equipment sales, parts, service and rentals. Now, Thigpen said that he believes, with four stores in two states, R.S. Braswell Co.’s Bobcat dealerships will benefit from their combined strengths to remain the top choice for professionals when shopping for Bobcat equipment in the Carolinas.  CEG

Contractor Working Hard to Fix Problem A statement from Civic Construction reads in part, “As is the case with any highrise development in south Florida, our team has experienced a series of minor leaks during the excavation process. The source of these leaks is the water table, which does not interact with Biscayne Bay or the drinking water that comes from the Biscayne Aquifer. “Our team is remediating these leaks as they happen, and there is no evidence of impacts on surrounding properties. Because the water table spans across South Florida, water intrusion of this nature is common during the early stages of high-rise developments in the region. We anticipate that additional leaks may take place as construction moves forward.” In a letter to some nearby residents obtained by Local 10 News on Nov. 16, Miami-Dade County DERM Director Lourdes Gomez noted that “the ground we live on in Miami-Dade County is very porous and it contains groundwater. Therefore, when excavating [here], it is common to encounter the groundwater table as you excavate down into the ground.” She added that contractors will commonly try to

mitigate against the amount of groundwater they encounter by “sealing or grouting the ground…before they start the excavation.” Builders also will use a dewatering technique, she wrote, that involves pumping out any water that does seep in “to help keep the area dry while they conduct their work” which includes when they form and pour concrete. “Unfortunately, in this specific case, it appears that the work to seal the ground at the excavation has not worked adequately and they have had groundwater seeping into the evacuation area,” Gomez noted. According to city building records, DERM inspectors on Nov. 15 reported that with water continuing to enter the site, a holding pond was made with backfill soil to limit flooding. Challenges of Project in Shallow Water Table Rachel Silverstein, of Miami Waterkeeper, said, “It is very difficult to do construction underground in south Florida because we have very porous limestone rock beneath us. We also happen to have a shallow water table. You only have dry rock for a short time before you hit the water, so it can be very complicated to construct under-

ground parking here in Miami.” This is one of the reasons, she said, that you do not see basement construction in south Florida homes like in other parts of the country. The Una Residences underground garage may consider itself the deepest, but building subterranean garages is common for Miami, said City Commissioner Ken Russell, who pointed to the recently completed underground garage at Brickell City Center. “It just has more challenges here in Miami with porous limestone and aquifers and bodies of water,” he said, adding that as long as it has been deemed “safe” the city will continue to permit these types of projects. As it happened, the groundwater breach in October occurred on an evening when Local 10 News meteorologists said south Florida experienced seawater coastal flooding. In addition, a full moon helped to create the King Tides phase in the third week of November. Extra Scrutiny in Post-Surfside Era Some residents in nearby Brickell buildings said they are concerned about another incident like the Surfside condo collapse. Wdowinski recently published the findings

of his groundbreaking research into the June 24 catastrophe that killed 98 people. Analyzing space-based radar data, the FIU researcher “identified the 12-story Champlain Towers South condominium as the one place on the east side of the barrier island where land subsidence was detected from 1993 to 1999.” He added that “land subsidence in and of itself likely would not cause a building’s collapse.” But, in a post-Surfside era, Wdowinski said it is understandable that there would be extra scrutiny from nearby residents and city building officials related to soil foundation and the structural integrity of buildings and projects along our coastline. “What happened in Surfside...put everybody on alert and justifiably so because we don’t see situations like that — it was scary,” he told Miami’s Local 10 News station. Wdowinski added that another lesson learned from Surfside is the importance of monitoring buildings after they are constructed. “I think that if we learn something from the Champlain Towers South, it is that it is not enough to check it when they do these buildings, but also afterward,” he explained. “We need to continue monitoring these buildings, especially when [they age].” 

Ritchie Bros. Reports Loader Backhoe Prices Up 15 Percent Ritchie Bros.’ December Market Trends Report continues to show positive pricing trends across all its equipment indexes, with truck tractor prices up 55 percent in the United States, while medium earthmoving equipment and vocational trucks are up 43 percent and 41 percent respectively (for the three months ending November 30, 2021). With this month’s report, Ritchie Bros. has included a special focus on loader backhoe sales in the United States and Canada. According to Ritchie Bros.’ Market Trends tool, median backhoe pricing is up approximately 15 percent in the United States. The free December report is available for download at: rbassetsolutions.com/market-trends-report. “Loader backhoe volumes have declined while demand has strengthened, resulting in strong pricing for the incredibly versatile machine,” said Doug Olive, senior vice president (pricing), Ritchie Bros. “In 2016 we sold close to 3,000 backhoes in the United States. Through 11 months in 2021 we’ve only sold 1,815, but the median price has increased 15 percent.” Doug Rusch, managing director of Rouse

Sales, added, “Retail values continue to climb, having increased more than 16 percent since the beginning of 2021, reflecting a strong pricing environment for sellers. Transaction volumes in the retail space are also healthy and auction values have increased 3.2 percent in November. All signs point to strong end-market demand for machines right now.” 

Case Donates CTL to Zac Brown’s Camp Southern Ground Case Construction Equipment donated a TV450B compact track loader (CTL) and numerous attachments to Camp Southern Ground, a multi-missioned nonprofit organization in Fayetteville, Ga., founded by Grammy Awardwinning artist Zac Brown of Zac Brown Band. For the majority of the year, Camp Southern Ground is committed to supporting veteran mental health and wellbeing with two programs that help veterans find community, direction, purpose and healing during — and even long after — their transition back to civilian life. During summer months, Camp Southern Ground is a residential summer camp serving kids from varied backgrounds and abilities. to expand facilities and capabilities at the camp. “Really good things happen at this camp — healing, growth and education — giving veterans the skills to transition to the next stage of their careers, and giving kids the confidence and social skills to excel in their personal relationships,” said Dolan. “At Case, we talk a lot about building communities — and the strongest communities are built on the kind of strength

and character that Camp Southern Ground provides. We’re honored to be partners in this mission together.” “The good we do here is built on the foundation of the work we do with our veterans and our campers, as well as the support of great partners like the team at Case,” said Mike Dobbs, CEO, Camp Southern Ground. “This donation allows us to perform countless site development and

maintenance projects that we’d otherwise have to contract out — saving us considerable time and resources. HCEA Announces Big Push Fundraiser for New Museum The Historical Construction Equipment Association (HCEA) in Bowling Green, Ohio, announced its Big Push Fundraiser. The HCEA’s National Construction Equipment Museum, the world’s only public museum dedicated to the restoration and preservation of construction equipment, has no more indoor space for the proper storage and display of many of the very rare antique machines in its collection of more than 170 machines. Its existing building is jammed full, and machines that should be under shelter are out in the elements. To remedy this, the HCEA is in the final phases of raising funds for a new building. This new structure will be a 20,000 sq.-ft., purpose-built museum with a high-clearance, vaulted ceiling in the main hall. This will allow large machines such as cranes and shovels to be properly displayed, and all of the machines will be set up in a manner where they appear ready to work. In addition, the new building will include new office space and an upgraded archives facility, while the current office and archives building will be converted into a meeting and learning center. This new museum also will be built ready for expansion to accommodate smaller machines. Ken Taylor, the owner of Ohio CAT, is seated at the controls of the museum’s newly acquired Caterpillar D9G, donated by Gary Mahan of Basking Ridge, N.J.

The new facility, to be constructed on HCEA’s existing property, will nearly triple the current museum’s display area.

To bring this project to fruition, the HCEA announced the Big Push fundraiser. Ken Taylor, owner of Ohio CAT, has pledged to match the next $500,000 donated to the construction of this new museum. Donations can be made through the HCEA’s website. Checks and money orders (no cash, please) can be mailed to 16623 Liberty Hi Road, Bowling Green, Ohio 43402. Major credit cards are accepted. The HCEA also has options for larger donations such as Required Minimum Distributions, Planned Giving and more. Please contact the HCEA for details. For more information, visit www.hcea.net. 

Case Debuts SV215E, SV217E Single-Drum Vibratory Rollers Case Construction Equipment introduced the SV215E and SV217E single-drum vibratory rollers — two new models built for fast and consistent soil compaction on varying lift depths and material types. This is achieved with high centrifugal forces and standard dual amplitude and dual frequency capabilities that allow the operator to dial in compaction performance to each lift. Both rollers operate at 154 hp and weigh in at 33,420 and 36,500 lbs., respectively, with centrifugal forces up to 73,063 and 74,861 lbs. Each model also is compatible with ACEforce intelligent compaction technology to further ensure compaction quality, documentation and productivity. This introduction brings the Case single-drum soil compaction lineup to five models ranging from 75 to 154 hp. “Our focus is on providing the North American market with a full-line of soil compaction equipment that fits a variety of jobsite profiles and transportation needs,” said Jeremy Dulak, product manager, Case Construction Equipment. “These new models add compaction power and performance at the higher end of the product line while retaining the versatility and compaction performance of Case rollers — and we’re helping contractors complete compaction in fewer passes, even on deeper lifts.” Case E Series compactors feature a lowcenter-of-gravity, as well as an axle-free design that provides constant power to the wheels and drum with an electronic selfadjusting torque control system. This is further assisted by automatic traction control with HX drive propulsion system — optional on smooth drums and standard on padfoot models. This creates enhanced stability and performance on grades up to 67 percent, according to the manufacturer. Compaction performance is further enhanced with an oscillating articulated roller joint that maintains consistent drumto-ground contact, and an updated drum design that reduces drift and maintains constant compaction throughout each rotation.

Standard dual frequencies and amplitudes, along with standard auto vibration control, let the operator set compaction performance based on the type of material and the depth of lift — reaching desired compaction in fewer passes and ultimately improving productivity and reducing wear and tear on the equipment. Available in both cab and open ROPS configurations, Case E Series soil com-

pactors feature a spacious, comfortable and intuitive operator environment with an adjustable seat that swivels up to 80 degrees, providing added visibility to the drum surface and flexibility for compaction in both forward and reverse. The axle-free design also allows the engine to sit lower in the machine, which further improves visibility to the rear with a low, sloped rear hood. All primary machine information and

controls are found in an LED display integrated within the steering wheel of the machine. The display features three core interfaces dedicated to operation and performance, machine information and onboard diagnostics. The display, locked within the steering wheel, eliminates the need for other displays and a larger, bulkier dashboard — further improving visibility from the operator station down to the work area and centralizing all core machine information in a single location. Both new machines are designed for easy groundline serviceability with a manual-lift hood that provides easy access at ground level to all fluid ports, drains, service checkpoints and filters — as well as a cab that can be easily tilted forward for access to all primary hydraulic components of the machine. Each model also is available with optional Case SiteWatch telematics to further enhance fleet management activities. Additional options include a leveling blade, a padfoot shell kit for smooth drum models; a pressurized cab with heat, ventilation, air conditioning and radio; traction tread tires, a rotating beacon, a backup camera, and extra front work lights (only available on smooth drum models). "The Highway 17 widening project accomplishes several goals,” said J. Barnwell Fishburne, chairman of the SCDOT Commission representing the 6th Congressional District. “It updates the road infrastructure and improves the safety of our citizens as they travel the corridor. It also supports the region’s growth and economic development efforts now and for the future. Better safety and quality and a stronger economy for South Carolinians are what SCDOT’s mission is all about.” According to Greg Moore, SCDOT construction engineer of Beaufort and Jasper counties, the biggest challenge for crews is construction of the new roadway section in the marsh and wetland areas. “These areas have poor soil stability, and the design engineers projected a considerable amount of settlement. Several measures are being utilized to overcome these challenges, including a granular bridge lift, high-strength geotextile fabric, geogrid reinforcement, prefabricated vertical drains, surcharge with settlement monitoring and detailed construction sequencing with settlement timelines throughout the phases of construction. In addition, the construction sequencing is intended to prevent impacting the wetland areas outside our permitted limits.” Workers are currently building the granular bridge lift; installing geogrid reinforcement; hauling and compacting the roadway embankment; installing settlement monitoring devices; and installing and maintaining erosion control devices for environmental permit compliance. Ground improvements, including specialized work on new roadway embankments and compacting the soil to sup-

port the new highway, will add time to construction, with a completion date of late 2025. The project — considered a top road infrastructure priority for the region — is funded by SCDOT through the Lowcountry Area Transportation Study (LATS) and the Lowcountry Council of Governments. Moore said tasks already completed include the full depth pavement rehabilitation on U.S. 17; the shifting of traffic into two 11-ft. wide lanes; and installation of the current phase prefabricated vertical drains. Prep work has involved considerable coordination with utility companies and the relocation of necessary utilities. It’s also included the installation of erosion control devices for environmental permit compliance. Survey control verification and preliminary staking also were essential in accurately laying out the new roadway and maintaining work within the permitted limits. In expanding from two to four lanes, the staging and sequencing requires the construction of one half of the road, then shifting traffic onto the new two-lane portion. “Once traffic has been shifted, the contractor can then begin construction on the second half of the road before opening it to four lanes of travel in its final condition,” said Moore. “Other components of the expansion, aside from the

pavement structure, include earthwork for the roadway embankment, new and extended drainage structures, asphalt paving, roadway signage and striping and signal installation. In addition, the maintenance of two-lane two-way traffic is a requirement throughout construction.” Moore noted that construction of a divided grass median between the new four lanes includes a sequence of activities that allows for this to be accomplished after traffic shifts to the initial new two- lane section. Once traffic has been shifted, the embankment construction and grading of the grass median can be performed, and the area will be permanently seeded for stability. The project also calls for wider shoulders. “The roadway will be constructed in its new location without widening the shoulders of the existing roadway, except where the widened section tapers back into the existing two-lane roadway.” The bike lanes will be 6 ft. wide and constructed on the outside shoulders of the northbound and southbound travel lanes. To produce the safety rumble strips, a small milling machine is used to cut into the asphalt at the specified intervals. The intersection improvements at SC 315 will include signalization, a protected through lane along U.S. 17 heading southbound, turn lanes with additional storage, and also will maintain the dedicated right turn lane from U.S. 17 northbound to SC 315. The new traffic signal will include the installation of steel strain poles, new traffic signal heads and the installation of a control cabinet. The signal installation will be performed throughout the project and will require adjustment as the construction progresses. As for excavation work, due to the existing topography of the project location, crews will be utilizing borrow material from offsite to construct the roadway widening. “The quantities include more than 1,000,000 cubic yards of combined earthwork activities to complete this project,” said Moore. “The earthwork quantity includes the granular bridge lift, borrow excavation and unclassified excavation. The installation of the borrow material is carefully controlled by construction sequencing to prevent overloading the existing soils. Overloading of the existing soils could create mud waves into the surrounding marsh.” see SCDOT page 50

NAPA Modernizes Leadership Structure, Welcomes Incoming National Officers Following the overwhelming approval of voting members in the fall, the National Asphalt Pavement Association’s executive committee formally approved revised governing bylaws at its November meeting. The updated bylaws take effect Jan. 1, 2022, establishing a roadmap for engagement at national and regional levels as the industry works to implement the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). Primarily, the revised bylaws modernize the association’s leadership structure in two distinct ways to generate more input and impact. These include: 1. Streamlining NAPA’s board of directors, capping it at 30 members (down from a high of 80 at times), which sets national strategy for the industry and performs oversight and fiduciary duties for the association, and 2. Establishing an advisory council comprised of four geographic regions — Northeast, Southeast, North Central and West — that will feed emerging and important issues to the national body, while supporting national efforts at the regional and local level. Effectively, these actions empower members and leaders through engagement opportunities and representation, generate greater focus through understanding of key initiatives and industry priorities, encourage grassroots execution through regional leadership, create alignment with State Asphalt Pavement Association (SAPA) partners and reveal a transparent pathway to association leadership, the association said. “The new board is going to be able to move in a more nimble way and have more succinct conversations about challenges in our industry,” said Jim Mitchell, who chaired the Governance Task Force that recommended the bylaw revisions. “I’m really excited about the two-way conversation between the board and the four new regions, and their opportunity to influence and impact national issues on a regional level,” he added. Separately, in its annual election, voting members

approved the incoming 2022–2023 National Officers, who will begin their terms at NAPA’s Annual Meeting in Scottsdale, Ariz., in January. They are: Chairman: James (Jim) Mitchell, who has served the association in a leadership capacity since 2017, most recently as first vice chairman. In NAPA’s 66-year history, he is the third son of a past chairman to become chairman as well. Mitchell is the president of Superior Paving Corp. in Gainesville, Va. First Vice Chair: Christian Zimmermann, New England Group president, CRH Americas Materials, Belmont, N.H. Second Vice Chair: Brady Meldrem, president, Norris Asphalt Paving Co., Ottumwa, Iowa. Secretary: Patrick Nelson, president & CEO, LehmanRoberts Company, Memphis, Tenn. Treasurer: Robert Doucet, president, Barrett Industries, a Colas Co., Morristown, N.J. To support the incoming national officers, align with the revised bylaws and further advance its national strategy, the association enacted several staffing updates: • Ester C. Magorka is now senior vice president, Industry Promotion & Membership. • Amy Miller is now vice president, Member & Industry Alliances and national director, Asphalt Pavement Alliance. • Ashley N. Jackson is now senior director, Government Affairs & Political Action Committee. • Kelly Kanaras is now director, Industry Promotion. • Michelle Kirk is now manager, Alliances & Awards. • Ebony (Ealey) Curry is now administrative assistant & Diamond coordinator. The association gathers in person Jan. 23 to 26, 2022, to install the new national officers, share educational and networking opportunities to advance the asphalt pavement industry and IIJA implementation, and hear from keynote speaker Nido Qubein, president of High Point University in North Carolina. A report published by the National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) adds to the growing library of data and resources on the resilient aspects of asphalt pavements. In NCAT Report 21-02, Asphalt Pavement: A Critically Important Aspect of Infrastructure Resiliency, authors Benjamin F. Bowers and Fan Gu provide an in-depth literature review of asphalt pavements in the context of resilience, along with a list of tools for resilience. They also identify resilient practices associated with asphalt pavements, such as fast construction to rapidly repair roads that are damaged during extreme events, per-

petual pavement design to harden critical corridors and leveraging maintenance schedules to incorporate

resilience adaptations. Events impacting pavement resilience include flooding, sea level rise, snow events and droughts. The report includes related case studies examining the Alaska earthquake of 2018 and the Iowa flooding of 2019. It

also shares highlights from a 2019 asphalt pavement resilience workshop attended by contractors, asphalt pavement associations, agencies and academics. In addition to funding the NCAT report in partnership with State Asphalt Pavement Associations, NAPA offers a growing list of resources on asphalt pavement resilience: videos, webinars and additional reports. Visit AsphaltPavement.org/Resilience to examine and implement all the available resources, particularly in the context of increased focus on resilience in proposed highway legislation, procurement and funding. RB Baker Makes Soil Improvements for Road Widening SCDOT from page 40

The earthwork activities during construction cover more than 1,327,400 cu. yds. This includes unclassified excavation, borrow excavation, granular bridge lift and unclassified specials. Key tasks remaining on the project include the completion of the initial two-lane widening section; earthwork and surcharge installation; settlement timeline of 12-18 months verified by settlement monitoring devices; removal of surcharge; installation and extension of drainage structures; fine grading; paving; and then shifting of traffic on this part. At that point, the entire second half of the roadway will be constructed. Heavy equipment needed for the project includes D61 and D51 Komatsu low ground pressure bulldozers; an 85G John Deere excavator; a 624 John Deere wheel loader; a PC360 Komatsu excavator; a Caterpillar motor grader; Caterpillar rollers; a PVD tracked installation machine; and an E50 Wilson amphibious excavator. Main materials include granular bridge lift, borrow, asphalt, drainage culverts and concrete for the culvert extensions. The three primary concerns crews focus on while constructing projects of this magnitude include the safety of the workers and motoring public, environmental permit compli-

ance and the quality of materials and workmanship. As for the most time-consuming part of the construction, said Moore, “This will include the placement of borrow material and the required settlement durations as outlined in the sequencing.” RB Baker, a division of Reeves Construction Company, serves as the prime contractor. “They have extensive experience in varying and complex projects,” said Moore. “They have demonstrated a commitment to safety, environmental compliance and quality over the life of this project.” He added, “I appreciate the opportunity to serve SCDOT and take great pride in serving the public on this project of regional significance. The greatest reward comes from delivering projects like this to completion, but my daily reward is working with a team of committed partners working toward that goal.”  CEG

Hummerbee Impresses Midwest-Based Best Excavation

At a recent equipment demonstration, Bob Best took notice of the stout, compact articulated loader busily feeding Bandit machines and was immediately impressed.

At a recent equipment demonstration hosted by Bandit Industries near its headquarters in Remus, Mich., the manufacturer’s extensive line of tree chippers and stump grinders weren’t the only machines to catch the attention of Bob Best, owner of Best Excavation, based in Alma, Mich. Best took notice of the stout, compact articulated loader busily feeding the Bandit machines and was immediately impressed. As it turned out, the loader was on loan from another Michigan-based manufacturer, Hummerbee Rough Terrain Equipment. Brian Kulling, president of Hummerbee, also was on hand at the Bandit demo event and Best sought him out to learn more about the company and its compact articulated loader. Over the 35 years that Hummerbee has been in business, the company has gained a worldwide reputation as a premier manufacturer of rugged and reliable 4-wheel drive articulated forklifts for the beekeeping industry. With the rising popularity of compact machines in the construction, tree care, farming, forestry, landscaping and municipal maintenance industries, Hummerbee saw an opening for a U.S.-made, heavy-duty, compact articulated loader. Applying its decades of experience in the design, engineering and production of rough-terrain machines, the company set about the development of a telescopic, compact articulated loader that would bridge the gap between skid steer loaders / mini wheel loaders and full-sized wheel loaders. The goal was to design a compact loader that is costeffective yet rugged enough to meet the challenging demands of wide-ranging work applications. The result is the Hummerbee 721R, a 4-wheel drive com-

pact articulated loader equipped with a 126-in. telescopic, dual- arm boom, 4,500-lb. tipping load, and is capable of getting around the job site at a speed of up to 14 mph. Powered by a Tier IV Final, 74 hp Kohler turbo diesel engine, Hummerbee’s articulated loader employs a 2-speed hydrostatic transmission with on-the-fly shifting. Best Excavation specializes in post construction site work to prepare projects for final landscaping. Much of the company’s work consists of backfilling around foundations and site development, material placement and leveling on projects within a 40-mi. radius of the company’s home base. Established in 1987 by Fred Best, he grew the company into what it is known as today. Best Excavation is now owned and managed by Fred’s nephew, Bob Best. As the new owner, he brings a new scope to the projects that Best Excavation has been completing for more than 30 years. Best hopes to continue to find new ways to complete daily operations more efficiently and deliver the same quality service his uncle built the company around. That’s why the Hummerbee caught his attention, but will it fit the bill? Eager to test the new Hummerbee compact articulated loader in a real-world work application, Kulling readily agreed to provide Best Excavation one of its machines for an extended trial period. Best’s immediate impression when operating Hummerbee’s compact articulated loader was that getting accustomed to the machine was extremely easy. “The controls are like a cross between a wheel loader and a garden tractor,” said Best. “The forward / reverse rocker foot pedal, joystick controls and steering wheel are intuitive and very responsive.”

Best also was impressed with how much weight the Hummerbee compact articulated loader could lift. The 721R can manage a 2,500- to 3,000-lb. operating load, depending on the tire size and counter weight package. “Unlike many machines of this size, the Hummerbee isn’t tippy or forward heavy at all,” he said. “The telescopic boom offers an advantage in loading a truck, providing access to the full truck bed as opposed to just the back half.” Best found that another advantage of the Hummerbee is that the location of the operator’s position, which is higher up, provides exceptional sight lines on the job site, making it safer to operate. Best also liked the fact that the Hummerbee is a wheeled loader as opposed to a track machine. “With a tracked machine, you have to watch how you turn to avoid tearing up the ground on a finished grade, we didn’t have that issue with the Hummerbee. And because it’s articulated, you can really operate in tight spots,” he said. A multitude of skid steer-style attachments are compatible with the Hummerbee compact articulated loader to equip the machine for a wide range of job functions. And the true, 21gpm auxiliary hydraulic oil flow extends the machines capabilities, which is a unique feature in the compact articulated loader world. “The Hummerbee articulated loader is easy to operate,” said Best. “An entry level person could jump on and go to work. It’s versatile and robust enough to meet the needs of professional contracting companies.” For more information, call Brian Kulling at 800/943-8677 or visit hummerbee.com.  CEG

Toro’s Dingo TX 700 Ideal in Tight Spaces Toro has added the Dingo TX 700 to its already extensive Dingo lineup. Due to the Dingo TX 700’s small size and powerful punch, it’s the ideal machine for both homeowners and contractors working within the confines of tight spaces. It packs 700 pounds of rated operating capacity into its small footprint, bringing Toro-level power to everything it touches, according to the company. “The compact size and flexibility of the Dingo TX 700 is bound to be a game-changer for operators,” said Kyle Cartwright, marketing manager at Toro. “The fact that it’s small, but incredibly capable, increases the applications for the Dingo TX 700 on the job site. This Dingo has the potential to be the compact go-getter of the operation.” Featuring Dingo TX 1000 traction controls and a dedicated stand-on platform, the Dingo TX 700 is easyto-use and boasts increased comfort and visibility. Even if the buyer is new to operating heavy machinery, it will quickly become second nature, the company said. The versatility of Dingos, or com-

pact utility loaders, is well-known — and the Dingo TX 700 is no different. In fact, its small size further increases versatility by allowing it to reach areas other Dingos may not. It’s also compatible with dozens of attachments, meaning the machine can be used for a wide range of jobs. Attachments include multiple types of buckets, adjustable forks, a grapple, leveler, utility blade and more. Completing more work using fewer machines is a major advantage, plus, the Dingo TX 700 doesn’t require as much storage space as its larger counterparts. It’s easy on turf, too. The Dingo TX 700 is available in both narrow track and wide track configurations — the wide track option is equipped with the industry tested Camso track system. The system features a less aggressive tread pattern that’s gentle on turf and minimizes damage, perfect for keeping pristine lawns intact. The new Dingo TX 700 will be available starting mid-year 2022. For more information, visit www.toro.com. 

Case Launches ‘Largest, Most Powerful CTL Ever Built’ Case Construction Equipment introduced the TV620B compact track loader (CTL), the largest and most powerful compact track loader ever built, according to the manufacturer. The 114-hp, 6,200-lb. rated operating capacity CTL delivers best-in-class breakout forces — as well as more standardized features than previously available on any Case CTL, said the company. This includes standard adjustable electro-hydraulic controls, high-flow hydraulics, auto ride control, oneway self-leveling, a hydraulic coupler, an auto-reversing fan, LED lights and a oneyear subscription to Case SiteWatch telematics. It also comes with a new 1.25 cu.-yd. heavy-duty bucket designed specifically for the TV620B. The new Case TV620B also features the new Case SiteConnect Module, remote connectivity and software updates through the SiteManager App (iOS and Android), as well as connectivity to the Case Uptime Center for collaborative fleet management between Case, the local Case dealer and the equipment owner. “The industry has never seen a CTL like this, and we’re focused on delivering extreme power and performance matched with intuitive technologies that simplify owning and operating,” said George MacIntyre, product manager, Case Construction Equipment. “The TV620B is built to simplify heavy work such as cold planing, mulching, heavy material handling, and loading high-sided trucks. There’s no loader on the market today with this level of standard features and its combination of power, stability, and performance — it’s here to take on the big work.” The TV620B also features the advances introduced with the launch of the Case B Series CTLs, including a completely redesigned operator interface, industry leading 360-degree visibility, and an eight-inch LCD multi-function display that serves as the command center for the machine. It also includes the industry’s only rearview camera visible in a split screen display with machine data. ‘Largest, Most Powerful CTL’ The Case TV620B provides major operational categories including rated operating capacity (6,200 lbs.), breakout force (12,084 lbs. bucket; 12,907 lbs. lift) and track length on the ground (74 in.). Ground performance and machine strength is further supported by a new heavy-duty undercarriage and heavy-duty 17.7-in. rubber tracks that allow for minimal ground disturbance (6.1 psi) and enhanced performance on improved surfaces. The TV620B offers a selection of buckets, including a heavy-duty 84-in. 1.25 cu.-yd. bucket with SmartFit teeth and is specifical-

ly designed for use with other heavy-duty attachments, such as mulching heads, cold planers and the new Case grading blade. Case will be releasing additional heavy-duty attachments designed specifically for use with the TV620B and has enhanced the hydraulic cooling capacity of the machine to support use of such heavy-duty, high-capacity attachments. “The combination of strength, performance and stability of the TV620B is unmatched by any other machine, and provides a robust platform for working with larger buckets and high-capacity attachments,” said MacIntyre. “Heavy pallets, loading larger trucks, and running attachments that require enhanced-high-flow hydraulics are all handled with ease by this machine. The combination of track-onground, hinge pin height and reach at maximum dump height specs really make this a machine designed for loading trucks of all sizes.” Standard Electro-Hydraulics, ‘Hydraulics On Demand’ Drive Greater Control The Case TV620B expands on the intuitive controls of the B Series CTLs with new control features and standardization. It comes standard with adjustable electrohydraulic controls, which allow operators to set total machine responsiveness to low, moderate or aggressive; or independently set tilt, lift and drive speed, as well as loader arm

and drive control to best meet the demands of the work. A simple button lets operators select between operating in H or ISO operating patterns. And “Creep Speed” allows the operator to set machine speed at a consistent/slow “creep” while independently setting attachment speed via the throttle for optimal use of attachments such as cold planers and brooms. Exclusive to the Case TV620B is new “hydraulic on demand” performance that allows the operator to easily select the percentage of auxiliary hydraulic flow to the attachment via the machine’s multi-function display. This allows the operator to dial in attachment performance to their preference or the recommendation of the attachment manufacturer. The TV620B also features standard automatic ride control with adjustable speed settings, which engages ride control immediately when the CTL hits a pre-specified speed. This feature is enabled and disabled simply within the multi-function display in the machine. It also features a foot pedal that serves one of three functions — accelerator (traditional acceleration), trans (reduces drive speed but retains RPM for loader arm functions), and decel (traditional deceleration), based on operator preference. “We are giving the operator more precise and intuitive control than they’ve ever had in a Case CTL, and making the machine as simple to operate for as broad a range of

applications as possible,” said MacIntyre. Enhanced Ease of Service; Standard Telematics; New Hydraulically Reversing Fan The Case TV620B meets emissions regulations with a combination of cooled exhaust gas recirculation (CEGR), diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technologies — it features no diesel particulate filter (DPF) and requires no regeneration. “This emissions solution requires no downtime associated with regeneration, no lifetime service associated with a DPF, and is easy for the owner to manage,” said MacIntyre. “We’ve also integrated large diesel (30.8 gal.) and diesel exhaust fluid (3.3 gal.) tanks to extend working days when the job needs to get done.” Debris buildup in the engine compartment is further mitigated with a standard hydraulic auto-reversing fan — the operator can easily set how often the fan runs, and for what duration, within the multi-function display in the cab. As with the entire lineup of Case compact track loaders, all major service points are easily accessible at the rear of the machine. Daily service and overall fleet management are further improved with a standard oneyear subscription to Case SiteWatch telematics. see CASE page 68

SiteConnect Module, Collaborative Fleet Management The enhancements in machine design and technology also includes the new Case SiteConnect Module — first introduced on Case G Series wheel loaders. The SiteConnect Module allows for more robust telematics performance, remote diagnostics and remote software updates that streamline fleet management activities. This enhanced connectivity allows the machine owner to share — at their discretion — real-time machine information with the dealer and the Case Uptime Center in Racine, Wis. “These technologies help Case and our dealers stay better connected to the service and fleet management needs in the field, and significantly shortens the amount of time it takes to identify machine issues, respond in the field and ensure optimal uptime,” said MacIntyre. Case achieves the new remote service capabilities in part through the new SiteManager App (iOS and Android). This app pairs the operator’s phone or device to the machine to enable remote analysis.

Certified Case technicians then diagnose the health of each connected machine through various parameter readings and fault codes — and the technician makes a determination as to whether the issue can be addressed remotely (such as clearing codes or updating software) or if it requires a trip to the machine. The SiteConnect Module also improves the volume, flow and integration of data to the Case SiteWatch telematics platform for real-time monitoring, management of maintenance and service intervals, examination of equipment utilization and overall machine record keeping. “The TV620B represents the most powerful, complete and intuitive CTL we’ve ever built, and certainly unlike anything the industry has seen — from the pure specs of it to the new control capabilities and the remote fleet management capabilities,” said MacIntyre. “This machine takes CTL capabilities to a whole new level no matter what industry you work in.” For more information, visit CaseCE.com/TV620B. 

Wind, Solar Construction Projects Thriving This Past Year ENERGY from page 1

face of supply chain issues, materials costs and COVID-19 restrictions. According to MIT Technology Review, renewables will make up 95 percent of overall capacity growth in the power sector over the next five years. Demand for energy is growing in general, so fossil fuels cannot be counted out of the mix. “It still remains to be seen how quickly carbon-free sources will become the dominant source of electricity globally and begin rapidly supplanting coal, natural gas and other polluting sources,” according to MIT. The decline in electricity generation from coal has opened up opportunities for other power sources. BloombergNEF reports that solar, hydro and wind generation accounted for all the growth in power generation last year. This while coal, natural gas and nuclear output declined. Citing improved economics, increased national emissions reduction commitments and domestic policy, the IEA revised its renewables estimates for 2026 upward more than 40 percent higher than 2020 numbers. “China, Europe, the U.S. and India will account for nearly 80 percent of the added renewable capacity,” reported the IEA. To meet the global 2050 goal of a net-zero energy sector build, average annual renewables additions will need to double over the IEA’s five-year expectations. More aggressive climate policies and goals; cheaper carbon-free sources; and fast-happening technologies to balance out fluctuating renewables on the grid will all be necessary, said MIT. The industry must overcome several “policy uncertainties and implementation challenges,” noted the energy agency. Everything from permitting and financing to grid integration and social acceptance could create challenges. “Current increases in commodity prices have put upward pressure on investment costs, while the availability of raw materials and rising electricity prices in some markets pose additional challenges,” said the IEA, adding it expects those

challenges will not be impossible to overcome. Feds Are Here to Help The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) includes major programs that bode well for construction contractors working in the energy sector, from support for electrification of the transportation system to building out the transmission grid and renewable power. “The IIJA creates major new investments programs, touching nearly every aspect of the energy industry,” wrote Beveridge & Diamond environmental law firm. “Companies should pay close attention to these programs, both as a potential source of grants or other financial support, and for the systemic impacts programs of this size are likely to have on the industry.” Contractors should take notice, too. “The IIJA’s energy and climate-related provisions are

The IIJA extends DOE incentives for improvements to hydro facilities that increase its efficiency by at least 3 percent. Incentives for improvements to existing hydroelectric facilities that support capital improvements also are included.

numerous, and the details for implementation will be important going forward,” wrote the law firm in detailing those provisions. The bill appropriates $7.5 billion to support construction of electric vehicle charging infrastructure, hydrogen and natural gas fueling infrastructure and propane fueling infrastructure for medium- and heavy-duty trucks. The IIJA aims to address climate change by improving infrastructure resiliency or mitigating the adverse effects of climate change. The act promotes construction of new electric transmission and easing regulatory barriers to transmission development, earmarking $65 billion for these purposes. Specific provisions include a $5 billion grant program to support hardening the grid against extreme weather, wildfires and similar hazards. Grants may be used for a variety of measures, such as undergrounding or relocating electric lines and constructing microgrids and electricity storage systems. The legislation clarifies that federal disaster assistance can be used to fund repairs to wildfire-damaged electric systems and that repairs may include undergrounding or adding fireresistant equipment, according to Beveridge & Diamond. It also authorizes the construction of transmission facilities to increase the transfer of renewable power between Canada and the United States under the Columbia River Treaty. The IIJA includes a grant program to support utilization of captured carbon in new products, loan guarantees and grants to expand pipelines that transport captured carbon to sites where it can be utilized, a new program aimed at supporting large-scale commercialization of carbon capture technologies, and amendments to the permitting process for carbon sequestration projects. The legislation expands federal support for the use of hydrogen as an energy source, said Beveridge & Diamond. It also includes federal support for developing at least four clean hydrogen hubs that would promote new technology and commercialization of that technology. Hydroelectric power, chiefly the installation of new generation on existing dams or improving the safety and environmental performance of existing dams, is included in the legislation. The new bill revives a DOE program that encourages new small hydro generation on existing dams and conduits such see ENERGY page 76

Power Equipment Keeps SRM’s Machines Running SRM from page 28

Ryan said. “I want to deal with people I trust and that goes a long way. In fact, he added, “There is not one complaint against Power Equipment that I could ever make. It has surprised me, too, that despite being such a large distributor, dealing primarily with brands such as Komatsu, Epiroc and Sennebogen through Power makes it feel like you are working with a small, local company. We just feel comfortable with them.” Ryan said that he knows it is a given that even brand-new equipment is going to have a service issue, “but it is how you handle those problems that matters, and even with Power’s other offerings, they have always stepped up and made it right for us.” Original Plant Remains SRM’s Signature Site Although now headquartered in Nashville, the Hollingshead family company has not forgotten the site and the service that helped put it on the map years ago. “We crush rock here at Smyrna, but of all

New Bill Revives Program to Encourage Hydro Upgrades ENERGY from page 70

as irrigation canals. It includes the addition of new generators to an existing dam or conduit or the addition of a small generator to a FERC-licensed dams in areas that lacks grid access, has frequent outages or high electricity prices. The new bill extends an existing DOE program providing incentives for improvements to hydro facilities that increase their efficiency by at least 3 percent. Incentives for improvements to existing hydroelectric facilities that would support capital improvements also are included. Programs designed to reduce the economic effects of shuttered and abandoned fossil fuel facilities are a part of the IIJA. One specifically targets demonstration projects for construction of renewable energy facilities on abandoned mine sites. In addition to expanded energy construction included in the IIJA, President Biden’s proposed federal tax credits extension in the Build Back Better bill and national and corporate efforts to meet EU emissions targets are factors in the IEA forecast revision. The law firm of McDermott Will & Emery (MWE) noted that with the federal government’s procurement power the executive order to meet the 2050 carbon-neutral target could “transform clean energy markets while achieving ambitious climate goals.” Those goals include 100 percent carbon pollution-free electricity by 2030; zero-emission vehicle acquisitions by 2035; net zero emissions from federal procurement no later than 2050; and a similar building portfolio by 2045.

Both the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and the Build Back America legislation are a double shot in the arm for the energy construction sector.

“The executive order and the administration’s procurement plans are a potential bonanza for clean energy and electric vehicle companies,” said MWE. “The federal government buys $650 billion in goods and services annually in addition to a real estate portfolio of more than 300,000 buildings and a fleet of more than 600,000 cars and trucks.” To achieve the 100-percent carbon pollution-free electricity goal, MWE said the federal government will buy power directly from utilities, enter into power purchase agreements with generators and develop onsite generation on federal real property. “Meeting this goal will spur the development of more than

10 gigawatts of new clean electricity production by 2030.” The executive order directs that at least 50 percent of that power must come from locally sourced 24/7 carbon pollution-free electricity. The sourced electricity must match actual consumption on an hourly basis and be produced within the same regional grid where the energy is consumed. “The McDermott energy team has seen such calls for around-the-clock clean power supply grow in recent years — particularly from large corporate energy buyers — including a number of leading technology companies. Those same technology companies have urged the federal government to procure clean energy on a 24/7 basis,” said the law firm. Though a boost in construction work natural follows all of this policy implementation, it comes with business operations challenges for construction contractors. According to MWE, the fed will expand its consideration of embodied emissions in construction materials and launch a Buy Clean policy for acquisition of materials with lower embodied emissions. The federal government also will require its major contractors to publicly report their greenhouse gas emissions, plans to reduce emissions and risks faced by climate change, said MWE. “Based on the prior experience of McDermott’s Energy and Project Finance Practice Group … the executive order and subsequent implementation could be transformative for the industry,” MWE said of the energy sector. “The federal government is the largest landowner and energy consumer in the United States.”  CEG

Junttan Unveils World’s First Electric Pile Driving Rig Junttan Oy is helping to ensure a sustainable future with the unveiling of the PMx2e, the world’s first fully batterypowered electric pile driving rig. The rig’s hydraulic system is controlled by a modern electric motor that generates power from a battery pack, which has replaced the counterweight. Junttan designed the PMx2e to mimic the use, efficiency and power of its diesel-powered PMx22 as closely as possible. The PMx2e offers the same robust structure and usability as the PMx22, but consumes less energy per pile, reduces noise, and delivers more power and instant torque, according to the company. Junttan’s PMx2e is equipped with two detachable 396 kWh battery packs to allow for 8 to 13 hours of continuous pile driving. An external quick charging unit allows the batteries to be fully charged overnight or during the day if needed. “This new electric pile driving rig demonstrates Junttan’s commitment to helping our customers build a more sustainable future around the world,” said Junttan Oy CEO Pasi Poranen. “After four years of research and develop-

Understanding the power of an alliance between manufacturer and end-user, Junttan and Aarsleff formed an alliance from day one known as “Junttan X Aarsleff.” Both had a shared vision of the future of driven piling. Junttan and Aarsleff saw an opportunity to write a new chapter in the playbook on sustainability. The companies combined their respective strengths and 119 years of combined expertise to improve sustainability without restrictions in performance or application. Junttan’s introduction of the world’s first electric pile driving rig will support Aarsleff’s mission to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions that originate from fossil fuels. “The biggest challenge to finding alternatives to diesel-powered machines is the lack of large, powerful electric construction equipment, but machine manufacturers are working hard to solve this,” said Lars Dithmer, head of sustainability at Per Aarsleff A/S. “The future is beginning to look brighter for more environmentally friendly construction sites.” For more information, visit www.junttan.com. 

ment, we are bringing a viable alternative to the diesel-powered deep foundation machine to the market. PMx2e will empower our clients by massively reducing their CO2 emissions and environmental footprint.”

The world’s first electric pile driving rig was commissioned in Sweden in late October 2021 by one of Europe’s premier contracting firms, Per Aarsleff, A/S and its Swedish subsidiary Aarsleff Ground Engineering AB.

JM Wood Holds Final Sale of 2021 in Montgomery, Ala.

Deep in thought on an excavator of interest is Brad Smith, Smith Equipment Company, based in Hernando, Miss. With inventory challenges for many contractors, machines both big and small were being purchased two, three and even four units at a time by a single bidder.

J

M Wood Auction final auction of 2021, which was held on Dec. 7 and 8 at the company’s Montgomery, Ala., headquarters facility, made for a strong finish for this year. With more than $27,000,000 in sales, the sale capped off a record breaking year for gross sales. The featured sellers included a major job completion auction for Waites Construction, as well as items from Alabama Power Company, Georgia Power Company, PowerSouth Energy, Sparks Energy, The State of Alabama Counties, Gulf Services and more than 300 other sellers. Featured items included a 2007 Cat D8T that brought $230,000; a2007 Cat 854K that brought $550,000; a 2022 International bucket truck that brought $242,500; and a 2021 Peterbilt dump truck that brought $245,000 “Pricing was strong for this December Auction,” said Russ Wood. “2021 was a record breaking year for our company. We have the very best sellers that help us source the very nicest machinery to be found at auction. We could not have the type of auctions we have without the trust and loyalty of these first class sellers.” Next up is the 49th Annual Spring Five-Day Auction, scheduled for March 15 to 19, 2022. More than 5,000 trucks and machines are expected to be on the block.  CEG (All photographs in this article are Copyright 2021 Construction Equipment Guide. All Rights Reserved.)

Wrapping up an inspection of one of the auction’s higher-dollar machines, a Cat D8T, is Ron McBryar of McBryar Excavation, Trenton, Ga. Admiring a rather unique piece in the auction, a SHERP ATV — considered to be the ultimate all-terrain vehicle — are Joey Guillot and his wife, Dione, of J&D Logging, Dupont, La.

Deep in discussion during a Komatsu dozer inspection are Burt Jeffords (L) and Jared Jeffords of Jeffords Grading, Calhoun, Ga.

Getting ready to crank up a Cat D5G dozer for quick inspection are Mitchell Browning (L) and Justin Crawford of B&B Specialized Hauling, Buchanan, Ga.

Putting a big Deere 450 excavator through the paces are Jonathan Burns (in cab) of Jonathan Burns Construction, Columbus, Miss., and Merv McNees of McNees Trucking, Ethelsville, Ala.

Alabama and Georgia Caterpillar dealer representatives were out looking over the late-model equipment and monitoring the pricing. (L-R) are Tim Murphy, Yancey Bros. Co.; Greg Frost, Thompson Tractor Company; and Calum Mcloughlin, Yancey Bros. Co.

Test operating a nice Cat 312E excavator are Cam Lanier (in cab) and Mitch Cannon of Evergreen Siteworks, Opelika, Ala.
