The centerpiece of the latest effort in Charlotte’s Destination CLT portfolio, which has been building a range of expansive projects at the complex for most of the last decade, is the construction of the airport’s fourth parallel runway, a 10,000-ft.-long, 150-ft.-wide surface for departing air traffic. see RUNWAY page 32

Construction Industry Embracing, Adopting AI Technology at Record Clip New Tech Proving Useful in Road, Bridge Research Projects By Lucy Perry CEG CORRESPONDENT

The construction industry is adopting AI technology at a record clip, with new applications being introduced and integrated daily. The verdict is still out on the practicality of many of these new systems, but the belief is if it works for one industry it could be modified for success in another. Concerns about use and users are not stopping developers from throwing technology out there to see what sticks. see TECHNOLOGY page 64

Rise of Renewable Diesel: What It Caterpillar’s Sanford, Has to Offer Construction Industry N.C., Site Celebrates Its 25th Anniversary, Expansion in Works To fully understand the potential of renewable diesel and its role in what’s expected to be a greener, more sustainable future for the construction industry, it’s important to understand what’s expected of the fuel in both the near term and the long term. In November of 2022, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) approved amendments to its off-road regulation aimed at further reducing emissions from the off-road sector. In amending the In-Use Off-Road Diesel-Fueled Fleets Regulation (Off-Road Regulation), CARB required fleets to phase-out use of the oldest and highest polluting off-road diesel vehicles in California; prohibit the addition of high-emitting vehicles to a fleet; and require the use of R99 or R100 renewable diesel in off-road diesel vehicles, effective as of Oct. 1, 2023 (with requirements beginning as early as Jan. 1, 2024). Finally, as part of its announcement of the regulation, CARB said the program was expected to yield more than $5 billion in health benefits between 2024 and 2038. “Regulations like this one are here now,” said David Bolderoff, fleet manager of the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts, who detailed his thoughts on renewable diesel during an education session at ConExpo-Con/AGG 2023. “They vary state by state, but this one in particular is a game-changer.” With regulations like the amended CARB Off-Road Regulation starting to come into play, consumption of renewable diesel is expected to rise significantly in the coming years. But what is “renewable” diesel, exactly? It turns out it has a very similar chemical and structural composition to petroleum diesel, though it’s often comprised of fats and oils (animal waste fats, wasted fish products, used cooking oil, vegetable oil residues, tall oil pitch, crude palm oil, rapeseed oil and waste grease). However, according to Bolderoff, what really sets renewable diesel apart from counterparts such as petroleum diesel and biodiesel is its higher energy density, which is somewhere in the range of 5 percent. “That’s important, because the more energy you have in fuel, the less you need to produce the same amount of power,” said Bolderoff. “One of the real downsides with biodiesel is it has less energy density. And though it is rather difficult to beat the properties of petroleum diesel, renewable diesel is slightly better, and it burns cleaner.” Renewable diesel also: • Is a paraffinic fuel (with a superior cetane number of >65, which indicates its combustion quality) • Offers a desirable cloud point • Provides efficient combustion • Increases engine life • Reduces maintenance costs • Provides a smaller environmental footprint (65-90 percent carbon reduction) • Provides superior cold weather performance • Offers good storage properties • Is essentially odorless Currently, the vast majority of all renewable diesel

consumption occurs in California. And, as of just two years ago, Oregon was the only other state where renewable diesel was consumed. That, however, is about to change. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, renewable diesel production is expected to more than double during the next two years to meet growing demand and regulatory activity. “What we’re seeing in terms of the trend moving forward is big oil getting behind renewable diesel,” noted Bolderoff. “And what we’re seeing is they are spending a lot of time converting their refineries. So, in the next few years, we could really see significantly more production. “ However, the most notable characteristic of renewable diesel expected to impact its adoption is that it’s a true “drop-in” fuel that can be easily blended with petroleum diesel or biodiesel. Also, and perhaps more importantly, it meets the same ASTM D975 certification standard that ultra-low sulfur diesel does as well. “We’re seen a ton of state and federal infrastructure projects requiring the use of alternative fuels, and renewable diesel is an easy-to-use drop-in,” said Bolderoff. “So, construction professionals don’t need to buy new equipment. And while it’s not necessarily recommended to mix it on a regular basis, if you have a half a tank of fossil-based diesel fuel, you can drop this fuel in and you’re not really going to have any negative or detrimental effects.” Because widespread adoption of renewable diesel has yet to take place, there isn’t a ton of consistent guidance regarding how it should be used. According to Bolderoff, equipment service and operations manuals often feature a couple of pages on biodiesel, but nothing specifically on renewable fuel. More recently, he noted, OEMs have issued statements saying that if a fuel meets the ASTM D975 standard, using it won’t void the manufacturer’s warranty and it won’t hurt the engine. “So, if you have a good understanding of its fuel and what it offers from an efficiency standpoint and an emissions reduction standpoint — as it offers somewhere in the range of a 65-90 percent carbon reduction — you can actually use that in your bid process,” said Bolderoff. “Because what if bids are based on total carbon footprint, rather than just the lowest bid?” he continued. “In California, with what we’ve actually seen with things like the Renewable Identification Number [RIN] and Low-Carbon Fuel Standards [LCFS] credits, we’ve found that [using renewable diesel] actually saved us money, or at least it was price comparable.” Demand for renewable diesel is expected to rise in the not-too-distant future, in no small part to increased regulation of the off-road industry. And, as the construction industry begins to evaluate how to comply with various regulations, they’ll need to possess a strong understanding of the options available to them — while still considering implications related to productivity, safety and the ability to service and maintain vehicles and equipment. 

Caterpillar Inc.’s Sanford, N.C., facility is celebrating its silver anniversary, marking more than two decades as a world-wide source of Caterpillar’s compact track loaders (CTL). Over the past 25 years, the facility has produced skid steer loaders, multi terrain loaders and compact track loaders. Currently, the CTLs are the only product built in Sanford. To date, the facility has produced more than 420,000 machines. Caterpillar purchased the property in 1996 from a former furniture manufacturer and two years later built its first skid steer loader. The campus has expanded from one building with less than 100 people to multiple buildings with 2,000-plus workers on site. The company recently purchased an additional building adjacent to the property to support its workforce by expanding capacity, upgrading technology, streaming lining operations and ultimately supporting the next generation of products. The facility now encompasses nearly 1M sq ft under roof in what will be six separate buildings. CTL models currently produced in Sanford include: 259D3, 279D3, 289D3, 299D3 and 299D3 XE. In the first quarter of 2024, the Sanford facility will be begin producing the Next Generation Cat compact track loader 255 and 265 models. For more information, visit www.caterpillar.com. 

Southwest Virginia’s Bristol Casino Moving Forward The developers of the Bristol Casino in southwestern Virginia are moving forward with the first phase of their construction plans after recently filing for a building permit for a 661,713-sq.-ft. resort and six-story hotel. According to a building permit reviewed by the Kingsport Times News, the city of Bristol issued the permit Aug. 24 for the project valued at $110 million. The owner, Bristol Mall Holding Co. LCC, also paid a filing fee of $50,000. The newspaper, based in nearby Kingsport, Tenn., had previously reported the total cost for the permanent casino facility to be more than $500 million. The casino is located at 500 Gate City Highway, on the former site of the Bristol Mall. Construction for the hotel and resort is already becoming visible from the road, a sign of progress for many Bristol visitors and residents. The former shopping center property is set to be turned into the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Bristol, complete with two hotel towers, a pool, a live music venue, restaurants, shops and a convention center. The first phase of the hotel will include 303 guest rooms, a spa, gym and an indoor and outdoor pool.

“The construction at the Hard Rock Resort & Casino in Bristol is moving fast, with a shell of a large building visible from the road,” Neal Osborne, Bristol’s mayor, told the Times News. “This is incredibly exciting for our city. Over the past year or so, we’ve seen the tremendous positive impact Hard Rock has had on Bristol, from a spike in tourism, to increased tax revenues for the entire region, to philanthropic contributions to area nonprofits.” The project is being built and managed by TN Ward Company, based in Ardmore, Pa., and BurWil Construction from Bristol, Tenn., just across the state border from its twin city in Virginia. TN Ward has experience working on other Hard Rock Casino projects, with its most recent being the Hard Rock Casino in Gary, Ind. in 2021. BurWil Construction’s projects include the newly renovated D.P. Culp Center at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tenn. The Kingsport Times News noted that the Bristol Casino’s development team had already poured the foundation and began to erect steel at the site earlier this summer. As construction continues on the destination resort, many in the area are wonder-

ing if the project is still on schedule. Allie Evangelista, president of the Bristol Casino, answered that question when she told WCYB-TV in Bristol that the project’s plans have remained on track. She added that while it may seem quiet on the outside, crews have been very busy inside building the Hard Rock entertainment facility. She expects the first phase of the hotel to

finish by the summer of 2024. “I had an opportunity to tour the facility where the permanent site is going to be developed,” she said. “We are going to be located at the old Sears store, so that no longer looks like [it was once part of] a mall.” In the weeks prior to her site visit, Evangelista noted, contractors gutted and demolished the old Bristol Mall. 

FLPD Moves While Its New $140M HQ Is Under Construction A new temporary headquarters opened Nov. 14 for the Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Police Department (FLPD), which will be housed there until its $140 million permanent facility and parking garage is built and opened in two years. The city announced in a news release that construction is under way on the new facility, which facilitated the need to temporarily move police headquarters to a building at 1515 W. Cypress Creek Rd. The interim location will ensure that FLPD can continue to deliver the high-quality services city residents expect without interruption. The short-term FLPD headquarters will be open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., the agency said in the statement, while adding, “This new location will continue to support the needs of our community and officers during the construction period.” Prior to the department’s recent move, it had been working out of a building dating back to 1958. Miami’s WFOR-TV reported Nov. 13 that plans for the permanent Fort Lauderdale police building call for a threestory, 191,000-sq.-ft. building and parking garage at 1300 W. Broward Blvd., a location that is slated to include training rooms, public meeting areas and community space where residents and officers can work together on crime prevention and safety initiatives. The new FLPD headquarters also will provide workspace and ultramodern technology to a department that has more than 700 sworn and non-sworn personnel, the city noted. The energy-efficient facility is designed in a way to be open and welcoming to the community served by the department, conveying a strong sense of civic presence and transparency. With the increase in available space, FLPD will be able to relocate personnel and facilities to the new building, including an evidence warehouse and firearm training facilities. The old headquarters is slated for demolition and the land will be used for part of a community center and a new access road. The effort to build the new FLPD facility began to take shape in March 2019 with the approval of a $100 million bond issue by Fort Lauderdale voters. Last March, a construction agreement was signed, followed by the project’s groundbreaking ceremony in June where work began on the police department’s new parking garage, expected to be finished in August 2024. The city noted on its website that the completion of the new FLPD headquarters building should wrap up either late next year or early 2025, although its sitework is not expected to be finished until the summer of 2025. Until then, the city noted in its news release that the Fort Lauderdale community will continue “to have access to our temporary police headquarters and will be able to report incidents, file complaints, obtain records and speak with police department personnel.” In addition, FLPD said it “is committed to providing professional law enforcement services, ensuring public safety and fostering strong partnerships with our community. Our commitment to excellence extends to the construction of our new headquarters, which, once completed, will enable us to better serve and engage with our community.” 

Linder’s Asheville Branch Provides Service, Training

L

inder Industrial Machinery Company’s scenic Asheville, N.C., branch overlooks the French Broad River and is located within 20 minutes of the downtown area. The 15-acre branch includes a sales, parts and service center; a modern training facility; and proving grounds. Service Manager Tony Nussbaum joined Linder five years ago and has witnessed the transformation firsthand. “When I came on board, we were just a small support center in a strip mall,” said Nussbaum. “Since then, we’ve purchased our current facility and grown into the location. We’re now able to fully service all of our customers, provide training for our staff and customers, as well as test out equipment and provide demonstrations at the proving ground.” Over the last 18 months, the branch has doubled its staff, which now includes six service technicians to better support customers throughout the region. “Since we’ve opened our shop, we’ve focused on servicing our customers’ entire fleets, not just the brands Linder represents,” said Nussbaum. “That’s simplified the service process for many of our customers. It also shows our dedication to being their business partner more than just the company that sells them Komatsu equipment.” As the branch has expanded its services, the number of customers seeking support has grown. According to Nussbaum, customers especially appreciate the proving grounds, because they can test equipment and see the positive impact a machine could have on their operation. “Our proving grounds and classroom training facility work hand in hand to develop our customers’ knowledge of equipment and the technological solutions we offer through Smart Construction,” said Nussbaum. “You can sit down in the classroom to learn about the equipment and Smart Construction solutions, then head out to the proving grounds to see it in action. Until you get here to see it for yourself, you don’t really understand how impactful this facility is and how beautiful the location is. For any of our current or potential customers interested in building a relationship or touring the facility, our doors are open.”  (All photos courtesy of Linder Industrial Machinery.)

Further Delay...

SCDOT Updates Timeline for Hitchcock Parkway Project The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) announced just before Thanksgiving that the expected completion date of the S.C. Highway 118/Hitchcock Parkway in Aiken has once again been delayed — the fourth time that has occurred since the project got under way in 2021. According to the state agency’s Robbie Isgett and Adam Humphries, each of whom provided updates on the work to Aiken County legislative members Nov. 20, the “majority of the work” will be completed by the end of 2023, the Aiken Standard reported. But Isgett added, “There will be some work as paving season becomes available next spring at the Dibble Road end of the project,” and a planted buffer also would be installed in one area in time for the 2024 flower planting season. Humphries said SCDOT expects to have work on the Hitchcock Parkway, between Silver Bluff and Dibble roads, finished in the next month after state Sen. Tom Young Jr., R-Aiken, asked for details of the plans. “And then we’ll finish the work on Dibble itself and finish up that paving between December and the spring,” Humphries continued. The $12 million project includes resurfacing the parkway from Silver Bluff Road to the Jefferson Davis Highway. Crews have been adding a new layer of asphalt atop the old layers along that stretch of the roadway. In addition, a shared-use path also is being built to allow use

by cyclists, walkers, skaters and people in wheelchairs. SCDOT also is supervising improvements to five intersections along the Hitchcock Parkway corridor: S.C. 421/Augusta Road, Dibble Road, Huntsman Drive, Hickory Ridge Road/Oriole Street and Silver Bluff Road/Pine Log Road. The project also includes drainage upgrades and plans for wider shoulders. Hitchcock Parkway, named after the nearby Hitchcock Woods, is part of a bypass around downtown Aiken. The 4.8-mi. road connects Silver Bluff Road and East Pine Log Road to the Jefferson Davis Highway (U.S. Route 1/78) west of the city. When the Hitchcock Parkway overhaul was announced in 2021, the expected completion date was the end of 2022, but when it became evident last November that that goal would not be met, SCDOT postponed the completion to April 1, 2023, before pushing it a third time to late August. Once that finish date looked unlikely, SCDOT Secretary Christy Hall said she expected the project to be wrapped up by the end of 2023, the Aiken news source noted Nov. 21. The newspaper cited two reasons given by the state agency for the delays: utility relocations and problems with a contractor that had to be removed from the job. SCDOT experienced utility relocation issues near Silver Bluff Road and two issues on Oriole Street when it closed that avenue earlier this year, Humphries told Aiken

County officials. Kelly Moore, public information director for the SCDOT, said last May the delays also were caused by an underperforming drainage contractor that was later released from the job in accordance with federal requirements. Leland Colvin, deputy state transportation secretary for engineering, told Young in February that the issue resulted in a 130-day delay for the project. As construction work moved forward on the project, crews from Reeves Construction, based in Duncan, S.C., found an AT&T utility line that had not been relocated in the Dibble Road area, Young said. And before SCDOT began constructing a wall on Dibble Road near Cold Creek Nursery, one of its subcontractors spotted another utility line that should have been moved before digging commenced, noted Humphries. The rest of the project is now moving along smoothly, he said, but the transportation department “lost a little bit of extra time on the construction of that wall on Dibble [Road].” Young said he and state Rep. Bart Blackwell, R-Aiken, would ask SCDOT to get the work done in time for the Aiken Triple Crown, a series of footraces held in early March; and The Masters golf tournament in nearby Augusta, Ga., set to tee off during the last week of March. 

NCWRC Breaks Ground; NCDOT Awards Road Contract The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) broke ground Oct. 6 on a $10 million law enforcement training facility that will cement the agency’s presence at the Department of Public Safety (DPS) Samarcand Training Academy in Moore County. “This modern training facility will greatly increase our capacity to develop new officers to the highest standards as well as maintain the professional skills required through training of the current and future workforce,” explained NCWRC’s Colonel Ben Meyer in a statement. “Through this partnership, DPS and NCWRC will continue to better develop and train law enforcement officers who will serve the citizens of North Carolina.” The state’s wildlife resources agency has been training its recruits at Samarcand through a lease agreement with DPS since 2021. The current training complex includes a firearms training center with two ranges, a range house, a use-of-force firearms simulator and an obstacle and conditioning course. NCWRC plans to expand the campus to include a 20,000-sq.-ft., multi-floor structure with housing to accommodate approximately 50 agency personnel and a 1,200-sq.-ft. classroom and a tactical training room. Construction is set to begin before the end

of October just as the state’s number of wildlife law enforcement staff increases by an additional 16 officers. Earlier in the month, the North Carolina General Assembly approved funding for the new officers — the first increase in officer staff in 46 years. Currently, NCWRC Law Enforcement has 208 wildlife officer positions. “Adding 16 new officer positions to our Wildlife Law Enforcement Division, along with the extra capacity to train officers, will allow us to better protect and conserve our state’s wildlife, habitats, and natural resources,” noted Cameron Ingram, NCWRC’s executive director. “It will allow us to keep our public safe on waterways and lands that everyone enjoys.” Since the last increase in wildlife law enforcement staff in 1977, North Carolina’s population has increased 87 percent, annual vessel registrations have increased an additional 194,000 to nearly 371,000, and annual hunting, fishing, and trapping licenses sales have gone up by more than 200 percent. NCWRC expects the new training facility to be completed by August 2024. NCDOT Awards First Contract to Finish Raleigh’s Outer Loop Construction of the final leg of the Outer

Loop around the North Carolina capital city will begin as soon as next year, according to a recent report in the Raleigh News & Observer. The state Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and the N.C. Turnpike Authority have awarded the first of two construction contracts to complete N.C. Highway 540, also known as the Triangle Expressway, between Interstate 40 and Interstate 87. The agencies expect to award the second contract later this year, putting the highway on schedule to open in 2028, according to NCDOT. When that occurs, the six-lane Triangle Expressway toll road will be complete from Research Triangle Park (RTP) across southern Wake County to Knightdale, on the eastern side of Raleigh. N.C. 540 also will connect with I-540 to finish the Outer Loop across the northern part of the county. Construction on an 18-mi. section of N.C. 540 across southern Wake began in 2019. When it opens in 2024, it will extend the expressway from N.C. 55 in Apex to a massive interchange at I-40 and U.S. 70 near the Johnston County line. NCDOT has broken the final 10-mi. section into two projects. The first contract, awarded in late September to a joint venture of Flatiron and

Raleigh-based Fred Smith Co., is to build six miles of road from south of Rock Quarry Road to I-87 at a cost of $450 million, the News & Observer noted. It added that the second contract for the remaining 4 mi. is expected to total about $350 million. Just a few years ago, the state transportation agency did not expect to have the money to begin work on the final leg of the loop until 2029 or later. But the Turnpike Authority was able to get a single environmental permit for the road from Apex to Knightdale, allowing NCDOT to get started with utility work, such as moving a Duke Energy power line and a Federal Aviation Administration tower, authority spokesperson Logen Hodges told the Raleigh news source. That pre-construction work, coupled with strong local support and expected toll revenues, helped the project move up NCDOT’s list of priorities, Hodges added. Some version of a loop highway around Raleigh has appeared on planning maps since the 1980s. Construction on the first segment, known as the Northern Wake Expressway, began in 1992 and eventually arced across North Raleigh connecting U.S. 64 in Knightdale with I-40 near RTP. 

Komatsu Announces It Plans to Acquire Detroit’s American Battery Solutions Komatsu, through its wholly owned subsidiary in the United States, Komatsu America Corp., has agreed to acquire American Battery Solutions Inc. (ABS), a battery manufacturer headquartered in Detroit, Mich. Komatsu planned to close the acquisition on Dec. 1, 2023, on the condition that all necessary procedures for the closing are completed. The immediate impact on Komatsu’s consolidated business results is estimated to be minimal. ABS develops and manufactures a wide variety of heavyduty and industrial battery packs, using lithium-ion batteries for commercial vehicles, transit buses and on- and off-road vehicles. The company provides both standard and custom battery systems optimized to each customer’s needs. ABS’ technology, combined with the advanced product development knowledge and expertise of its people, enables the company to develop and manufacture battery packs designed to deliver superior performance and product life, and to enhance safety, according to the company. The acquisition of ABS will enable Komatsu to develop and produce its own battery-operated construction and mining equipment, through the integration of ABS’ battery technology with Komatsu’s knowledge and network. The first equipment produced with ABS’ batteries will be used to power mining equipment in North and South America, where demand for electrification has been increasing. In the future, Komatsu will aim to expand the use of batteries in construction equipment and to establish a global supply system. Komatsu will continue to support ABS’ battery business to further develop the electrification business post-acquisition. ABS will operate as a stand-alone business entity within Komatsu and will continue its growth plans by executing on its current and prospective customer programs in the commercial vehicle segments. The mining and construction opportunities provided through Komatsu will enable ABS to position itself as one of the world’s leading providers of battery systems in both on-highway and off-highway markets, according to the company. Through the acquisition, Komatsu will accelerate the development of battery-powered electric vehicles by utilizing ABS’ battery-related technology, along with other initiatives Komatsu is pursuing with its partners, to further contribute to the electrification of construction and mining equipment and the realization of a decarbonized society. These efforts will help Komatsu achieve its management target of 50 percent reduction of CO2 emissions from the use of its products by 2030 (compared to 2010 levels) as well as the company’s challenge target of achieving its carbon neutrality by 2050. As part of its growth strategy for the mid-term management plan “DANTOTSU Value — Together, to ‘The Next’ for sustainable growth,” Komatsu is working to develop and launch electric equipment to help achieve carbon neutrality, creating new value for customers with the development of new equipment, processes and technologies that will help operations step forward to the next stage for the workplace of the future and provide a more sustainable environment for the next generation. 

John Deere Commits Donation Match to Construction Angels Continuing its commitment to the safety and wellbeing of the construction industry, John Deere announced that it is committed to matching donations, up to a total of $100,000, made to the Construction Angels nonprofit organization from Nov. 1 to Dec. 31, 2023. Construction Angels offers critical support when tragedy strikes, providing financial assistance, grief counseling services and long-term scholarship funding to family members left behind when a construction worker dies on the job site. “John Deere is humbled to provide support to Construction Angels,” said Jason Daly, vice president, earthmoving sales, marketing & customer success, John Deere. “This contribution will enable continuity for family members who have lost a construction worker.” According to the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration, on average 4.5 construction employees are killed in a typical workday in the United States. In addition, approximately 20 percent of all jobsite deaths in the United States occur in the construction industry. The founder of Construction Angels, Kristi Gibbs, has dedicated her life to providing a support system in the moments when tragedy strikes.

“John Deere is humbled to provide support to Construction Angels,” said Jason Daly, vice president, earthmoving sales, marketing & customer success, John Deere. “This contribution will enable continuity for family members who have lost a construction worker.”

“In this business, you never know what might happen,” said Gibbs. “You never know what could cause an accident. Safety is our number-one goal in construction. We

try to anticipate any different type of construction issue that might occur on the jobsite and prepare for it. But there are accidents that happen that we cannot prepare for.”

When tragic construction-related fatalities occur, Construction Angels provides immediate financial assistance and grief counseling to the spouse and children who are left behind. Gibbs, who represents the third generation of an Ohio family that worked in the asphalt business, knew from a young age that she wanted to work in construction. She was previously employed at a concrete-cutting company in 2009 when she crossed paths with a family in need, resulting in the founding of the Construction Angels organization. In addition to grief counseling and financial support, a scholarship fund created by the nonprofit helps ensure children who lost a parent will still have the financial means to pursue higher education. Construction Angels is currently providing support in 24 states nationwide and is aiming to expand its assistance to all 50 states by 2030. Gibbs added, “working with these dealerships has really helped us move ahead, and partnering with companies like John Deere has given us some national exposure and helped us grow.” For more information about Construction Angels, visit www.constructionangels.us. Mass Grading Requires Moving Six Million Cu. Yds. of Dirt RUNWAY from page 1

According to Jack Christine, the airport’s chief infrastructure officer, work also is progressing on an extension of a north end-around taxiway, the relocation of two roadways to accommodate the project, the building of Overlook, a nearby public park that affords visitors a close-up view of aircraft takeoffs and landings. Another project is the construction of a new south-end cross-field taxiway with a bridge for airliners to taxi over a city street. The runway project also will include building a new electrical lighting vault, and an additional fire station. Taken together, these projects all have a price tag of just more than $1.4 billion. Runway Requires Mass Grading Christine said that mass grading got under way in June on the new Runway 1-19 at a site between two existing runways, 18C/36C to the east, and 18R/36L to the west, all of which are west of the CLT terminal. The facility’s other runway, 18L/36R, is in service on the east side of the terminal. “The far-western runway is for landings and Runway 119 next to it will be for departures,” Christine noted, adding that the Runway 18C/36C is for arrivals and takeoffs, but will be used solely for landings once the new one is open. “Overall, the contractors will need to move six million cubic yards of dirt, meaning that the longest duration of work in the program is the grading,” he continued. “So, we have initiated a mass-grading contract to help us get started on that in order to help us meet the new runway’s commissioning date of September 2027. He called the timetable for completion “comfortably aggressive” because his design and construction teams understand what needs to be accomplished to hit their targets. “It is doable, but to make it work, we had to break up the project by starting the grading early while we are still in the design for the final grading and paving for the project,” he said. Excavators, bulldozers and wheel loaders are operated by D.S. Wagner Co., an experienced Ohio-based contractor who has the contract for the huge grading effort. The runway’s length on its southern end is such that crews have had to relocate a small portion of West Boulevard to allow for heavy equipment to do their work. Once the mass grading is complete, Christine noted, there will be a series of additional contracts issued for the fine grading, as well as the paving and lighting for each of the

other components of the project. Later, he estimates 600,000 cu. yds. of concrete will be placed during the bulk of the runway construction from late next year through mid-2027.

Contractors will need to move 6 million cu. yds. of dirt for the runway project.

Airport Experiences Rapid Growth Christine explained the planned Runway 1-19 is needed due to the non-stop growth of flights to and from CLT, which has transformed it from a regional airport decades ago into one of the world’s busiest. In 2022, for instance, Charlotte Douglas recorded approximately 47.8 million passengers flying in and out of the airport, making it the seventh-most active in North America, according to Airports Council International (ACI). CLT’s passenger traffic last year ranked 19th in the world. “That growth is putting increased pressure on the airfield to be able to keep up,” Christine said. “Currently, we are seeing an average delay of about 12 minutes per aircraft. From a planning perspective, if you have more than four minutes see RUNWAY page 43

Biz Builds Success Via Unique Purpose-Built Attachments A & D Equipment is often referred to by its customers as “the real deal,” “top notch” and “a true customer’s dealer.” That’s because the company sets out to learn just what its customers need. “We have a great offering of unique purpose-built attachments, but what really sets A & D Equipment apart from its competition is its heritage,” said Donna LaFata, president of the company. “My husband, Anthony, and I are second-generation excavating contractors. His dad was an Italian immigrant who started the company from very humble beginnings, who ultimately turned his thriving excavation business [today known as LaFata & Son Excavation Inc.] over to my husband, and it was taken to the next level. “Every product we sell is a product that we use just about every day on the job site, so when we recommend an attachment for a specific application, we already know how it’s going to perform,” she added. “Everything we sell has been field tested here in Connecticut on some of the toughest job sites you can find.” Anthony LaFata has always had a passion for attachments. “With the amount of money that you spend for an excavator, to reach that investment’s full potential, using attachments to expand the machine’s capabilities just makes sense,” he said. Anthony LaFata likes to tell the story of the first attachment that A & D Equipment took on as a dealership. “As a contractor in the 1990s, we started to look for new technologies that would help us process aggregate materials on site,” he said. “New England contractors led the industry in that technology. Typically, we would bring a crushing or screening plant on site to process materials. But what we could not do was move that plant to process small amounts of material; it just wasn’t cost effective. “We experimented with a couple of different screening attachments, but they were really not all that productive; that is until we came across a manufacturer in Europe making an excavator attachment called Rotastar,” he added. “This product turned out to be an amazing piece of technology that allowed us to screen all types of materials, wet or dry, in significant volume, and transportation and setup time were no longer an issue. The Rotastar is durable, productive and affordable. After using the product for a significant amount of time, the thought occurred to us that perhaps we could sell this attachment and that’s essentially how A & D Equipment got its start.” The Rotastar screening bucket comes in a variety of sizes from skid steers up to 34-ton machines and uses lightweight pliable polyurethane stars that rotate and separate materials without crushing, allowing for an uncontaminated, usable product.

Donna LaFata, president, and Anthony LaFata, vice president, bring more than 50 years of excavating experience to A & D Equipment. Their first Rotastar is still in use on their job sites every day.

The decision was made to have Donna LaFata operate A & D Equipment and Anthony would keep his primary focus on the construction company. As time passed, Donna discovered that they were getting a lot of requests from Rotastar customers for other types of attachments. The LaFata’s knew from their experience with Rotastar that selling products which had already been tested by their construction company was a successful formula. It stood reason that if screening buckets were in demand and productive for the end user, a crushing bucket would be a logical next step. After Anthony used several different crushing buckets on job sites, they made the decision to add the Xcentric crushing bucket to their product offerings. Xcentric is designed to be a very high-volume crusher bucket. “You would put it in the category of being the Cadillac of crusher buckets,” Anthony said. “It’s going to out-produce any other bucket on the market using some advanced technology. But with that higher production comes a premium price.” The next product added to the A & D Equipment product offering was Indeco, a leader in the hydraulic attachment market that has been selling hammers in the United States for more than 30 years and has its U.S. headquarters in Connecticut. Again, Indeco was a product that had been time tested by LaFata & Son Excavation Inc. Anthony’s father had purchased their first Indeco back in the early 1990s. “We were so impressed with the Indeco product we were

interviewed for a testimonial video for Indeco that was featured at ConExpo, so putting the A & D Equipment name behind the Indeco product was an easy move,” said Anthony. “The company’s manufacturing is done both in Italy and the United States, and besides the hammers, Indeco makes high quality hydraulic pulverizers, shears and grapples.” Anthony’s passion for attachments led him to tiltrotators. But his introduction to Steelwrist, the tiltrotator manufacturer that A & D Equipment represents, came in a roundabout see ROTASTAR page 38

way. “I had no idea who Steelwrist was at the time, but they were rebranding a relatively simple screening bucket that processed material through a set of bars that vibrated, and I felt that it would work well for certain applications,” he said. “I found the product on the Internet. The company was overseas. I called them and a man named Stefan answered the phone. We went back and forth a little bit and when it was all said and done, I purchased a container load of these buckets. “A few months went by, and I got a phone call from Stefan,” he added. “He was in Connecticut and wanted to meet us and it turned out he is the CEO of Steelwrist. We spent quite a bit of time together and we actually became their U.S. warehouse temporarily while they established their U.S. headquarters here in Connecticut. Ever since that time, we have had a very close working relationship with Steelwrist, including working with them at major events like ConExpo. The tiltrotator market is beginning to explode in the United States. Younger owner-operators are embracing the technology, and it has become a very important part of our business.” Anthony said at first, he struggled with the operation of the tiltrotator until he became involved in the production of an HDTV pilot episode involving the building of a house and he had to force himself to operate the tiltrotator setup. “It was a lot of pressure and I hated it,” he said. “But by the time we were done, I had fully embraced it, and today I don’t know what I would do without it.” A & D Equipment has successfully marketed its attachments not only in New England, but also across the United States. Most attachments are not particularly complex, so supporting attachment sales a thousand miles away is something that can typically be handled via a phone conversation. A & D recently achieved Women Owned Small Business status, which has put it in a very competitive position when bidding on government contracts. The foundation of the company is nonetheless strongly built on passion for and expertise with attachments. And as the saying goes, at the end of the day, helping contractors do their jobs more productively and efficiently is, according to A & D, what it’s in business to do … every day.  CEG (All photographs in this article are Copyright 2023 Construction Equipment Guide. T680 100th Signature Edition Hauls Capitol Christmas Tree A Kenworth 100th Anniversary T680 Signature Edition, assembled by employees at Kenworth’s manufacturing plant in Chillicothe, Ohio, recently returned to the plant with special cargo — the 2023 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree. The T680 Signature Edition, operated by Werner Enterprises drivers Tim Dean and Jesus Davila, stopped at the Kenworth Chillicothe plant for a private event on Nov. 8 so Kenworth employees could see “The People’s Tree” before it completes its journey to Washington, D.C. This year’s U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree, a 63-ft. Norway Spruce, was harvested from the Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia on Nov. 1. Since its harvest, Davila and Dean have transported the tree to communities throughout West Virginia for special events as part of the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree Tour. This year’s tour theme is “Endlessly Wild & Wonderful.” “Our employees take a lot of pride in building Kenworth trucks, and for the T680 Signature Edition to return to where it was built with this year’s U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree, was really special,” said Doug VanZuiden, Kenworth Chillicothe plant manager. “This event was a great way for us

to kick off the holiday season, and we look forward to the tree lighting ceremony at our nation’s capital.” Werner Enterprises is this year’s official designated tour carrier and selected Dean and Davila to transport the 2023 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree. Kenworth supplied

the T680 Signature Edition, which is equipped with a 76-in. sleeper and the PACCAR Powertrain featuring the PACCAR MX-13 engine rated at 455 hp, PACCAR TX-12 automated transmission and PACCAR DX-40 tandem rear axles. This year marks the 10th consecutive

year that a Kenworth truck will deliver the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree. The tree was delivered on Nov. 17 to the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. For more information, visit www.kenworth.com. 

New Runway Requires New Bridge at End of Airfield RUNWAY from page 32

of delay, then your airfield is constrained, so we are well beyond the need for an additional runway to help deal with the volume of traffic that we have in Charlotte.” He explained that the new construction will allow CLT to separate arrivals and departures on the center runway set, which increases the capacity for the airfield overall and the airspace that the planes operate in, making it integral the new runway is completed in the next four years. New Taxiways Will Improve Flow No less important than the new runway is the construction of the two newest taxiways, without which the former would be nothing more than a wide road to nowhere. “The north end-around taxiway is being constructed to allow the aircraft that land out at Runway 18R-36L to taxi around the parallel center runway without crossing it,” Christine said. “We have about 550,000 operations a year and over 150,000 of them land on that western parallel runway. Right now, every single one of them must cross over our center runway, so that particular taxiway project will give us the ability to flow those aircraft safely onto the air carrier ramp without crossing a runway.” That also will reduce aircraft operating time, fuel burn and emissions while cutting the long wait times for passengers anxious to get to their gates. “The north end-around taxiway project is a massive project in and of itself,” said Christine. “And it is really a precursor to the runway program.” To accommodate the north taxiway construction, crews also relocated two portions of Old Dowd Road a bit to the north, where a new bridge for the street will be built over the Norfolk Southern mainline. Multiple utilities also needed to be relocated, including a large water line, and one of the major lines that pumps fuel from a depot several miles away into the airport’s fuel pond. “We are now about to start paving the taxiway itself and will go as far into the colder months as we can before coming back in the next paving season to complete it and get the taxiway ready to open,” Christine said. “Additionally, the navigational aids for Runway 18-C have been relocated and we have turned them over to the [Federal Aviation Administration].” Hi-Way Paving of Ohio is taking care of the hard-surface work. Taxiway to Come With New Bridge Less than 2 mi. to the south, Charlotte’s new south crossfield taxiway will utilize a bridge to allow aircraft to pass over Yorkmont Road at that end of the airfield, according to Christine. “That bridge is under construction right now, and Yorkmont Road will relocate underneath that overpass in the next couple months so we may close the existing street to let the contractors finish the taxiway grading,” he noted. To accommodate wide and heavy airliners and cargo jets, the bridge’s length is 106-ft.-6-in., with a width of 220 ft. Construction crews anchored it into the ground by driving 244 H-piles, totaling 18,000 longitudinal ft. In addition, the bridge’s construction will require: • 2 million lbs. of structural steel. • 74 equal angle (EA) 4-ft.-6-in.-tall, 101-ft-long steel girders. Its substructure (the footings, columns, and caps) will include:

Charlotte Airport rendering

Less than 2 mi. to the south, Charlotte’s new south cross-field taxiway will utilize a bridge to allow aircraft to pass over Yorkmont Road at that end of the airfield.

• Reinforcing steel weighing 1.2 million lbs. • A total of 3,700 cu. yds. of concrete. The 23,103-sq.-ft. bridge deck slab will need: • 1,000 cu. yds. of concrete, installed in six separate pours. • Reinforcing steel weighing 413,500 lbs. The structure’s approach slabs will encompass: • 15,930 sq. ft. • 1,500 cu. yds. of concrete. • Reinforcing steel that tips the scales at 524,000 lbs. The bridge also will be designed to Airplane Design Group (ADG) V specifications, according to Charlotte Douglas, with live loads equaling 1.5 million lbs. for an aircraft with two main landing gear assemblies, each carrying 50 percent of aircraft gross weight, neglecting the nose gear. Christine added that the airport’s newest fire station is planned for the south end of the complex, as well, adjacent to the cross-field taxiway currently under construction. Popular Overlook Returning to Airport Another component of the current Destination CLT enterprise is the rebuilding and relocation of Charlotte Douglas International’s popular Overlook, a place where folks have

long enjoyed excellent views of airplanes taking off, landing and taxiing across the tarmac. For 30 years, Christine said, the Overlook had been a favorite stop for visitors to the airport complex. But with the construction of the north end-around taxiway, airport planners needed to move the vantage point further to the west from its original location. When the new Overlook is open, visitors will be able to get a wider look of the western parallel runway, the fourth parallel runway when it opens, as well as a good part of the new north taxiway. “We are very excited about that part of the project,” Christine explained. The updated Overlook will include a kids’ playground, family picnic areas, a place for food trucks, restrooms and a static display aircraft. It will also be adjacent to the alreadyin-place memorial to the victims of USAir Flight 1016, which crashed during a heavy thunderstorm as it approached Runway 18C in July 1994. Schedule Adjustment Saves Time, Money Because of how well Christine and his team of professionals have planned the new runway/taxiway project at Charlotte Douglas, he is confident that they have identified all potential challenges and developed effective solutions to them. “As I mentioned earlier, getting the grading contract started while we are doing the design has proved to be a key mitigation for how long it would take to build the runway,” he said. “Based on our benefit-cost analysis, that runway will save the airline industry $250 million a year, so every year it is not open is a big miss on our part. The first schedule that we had showed the runway commissioning in 2029 and we realized that we could not go that long without it. It was very sequential and did not call for any paving to start until after all the grading was done. “So, we went back and took a new look at the schedule, and now we are on a path that gets that runway opening two years earlier.”  CEG

Ace Intermountain Recycling Efficiently Handles Waste

Closeup view of the NYE HD grapple.

Nine years ago in Salt Lake City, Utah, Ace Disposal and Intermountain Regional Landfill partnered to establish Ace Intermountain Recycling Center, essentially a transfer station. Both parties — Ace Disposal and Intermountain Regional Landfill — are privately owned companies.

The NYE 4 over 5 design gives it tremendous picking power and volume.

Landfills are not ideally designed to directly receive the garbage that they process. A transfer station provides the interim step between disposal companies and/or garbage producers and what ultimately ends up in the landfill. Ace Intermountain Recycling receives

The Liebherr excavator and NYE grapple as a team dramatically increased the efficiency of Ace Intermountain Recycling Center.

waste collectors’ garbage and recyclables, as well as construction recyclable materials, sorts out what needs to go to the landfill and what needs to go to a recycling facility and then transports those materials to its ultimate destination. In the process, transfer stations take small loads of garbage and combine

them into large loads, reducing the number of trips into the landfill, making it more economical to transport. Salt Lake City is Ace’s largest facility (110,000 sq. ft.) with additional locations in Pleasant Grove, Utah, and Heber City, Utah. see ACE page 56

Despite extreme abrasive conditions the NYE grapples have held up better than anything previously used by Ace Intermountain Recycling Center.

Reducing Noise, Dust Emissions for More Sustainability Excessive noise and dust emissions result in damage to health in the long term. To protect not only employees on building sites, but also human and animal life in the surrounding area, Kleemann continuously develops new measures for reducing and efficiently containing noise and dust emissions. Kleemann machines of the latest EVO2 generation thus work with a lower sound power level than their predecessor models. Less Noise in Urban Areas Particularly on construction sites in intra-urban areas, many people are exposed to noise emissions. Comprehensive noise protection is therefore all the more important here. However, regulations of local authorities with regard to the sound level of construction sites are not standardized. In order to optimize noise protection for residents and the construction site team independently of this, in the past Kleemann has dedicated a lot of develop work into the emission reduction of its plants. As a result, the basic versions of the current machines operate at sound power levels up to 6.2 dB lower than the predecessor models — the perceived noise is thus 75 percent lower. This is a clear improvement not only for users but also for residents. Kleemann Solutions The standard version of the Kleemann machines of the latest EVO2 generation already operates at 87/88 decibels (dB) at the operator’s stand. Optional noise protection packages reduce the sound power level of the complete plant by a further 3 dB and

halve the perceived noise level once again. Categorization aid: An average pneumatic drill reaches approx. 120 dB, a vacuum cleaner 70 dB. Sustainability As the fan speed is regulated according to load, ambient temperature and degree of cooler contamination, even the basic configuration of the mobile jaw crusher MOBICAT MC 110(i) EVO2 is very low-noise. With the additional noise-protection package, the plant can be operated without noisedamping headsets — depending on the ambient conditions and local regulations. Even without the noise protection package, only 90 dB are measured directly at the machine. The noise protection package results in around 85 dB in the direct vicinity of the machine. Effective Dust Containment Not only efficient noise protection, but also containment of the dust development benefits employees, residents and the complete environment. This protects user and residents — and, ultimately, such measures also ensure greater acceptance of urban building sites. Kleemann, with a special belt cover and a water spraying concept, has developed two measures that contribute to dust reduction. Water pump systems can be connected to the intelligently positioned water spraying system so that, among other things, standing water bodies or tanks can be used. The cover means that the fine dust particles are no longer blown away but rather remain on the conveyor. The result is a clear reduction in dust emissions. Fecon LLC Announces Acquisition of TREEfrogg LLC

Fecon LLC photo

Designed to fit small to midsize carriers, TREEfrogg’s tree trimming saws allow landscapers, landowners and DOTs to perform tree maintenance with machines they already have quickly, safely and economically. Fecon will rebrand the saw attachments as Trim Ex.

Fecon LLC, a leading global manufacturer of heavy-duty site preparation attachments and forestry accessories, recently acquired TREEfrogg LLC, a manufacturer of tree trimming saw attachments for skid steers and compact track loaders. The acquisition expands the right-of-way clearing solutions offered by Fecon in the forestry mulching and vegetation management industry. Designed to fit small to midsize carriers, TREEfrogg’s tree trimming saws allow landscapers, landowners and DOTs to perform tree maintenance with machines they already have quickly, safely and economically. Fecon will rebrand the saw attachments as Trim Ex. “We are excited to add the TREEfrogg trimming saws to the Fecon line,” said Jeff Stanley, Fecon’s senior vice president of product development. “This addition expands the offering to our agricultural, rural and DOT customers, giving them a productivity enhancing solution for selective tree trimming.” The innovative attachments offer an ideal solution for tackling overhanging tree limbs and other vegetation along easements, right-of-ways, roads, fence rows, paths and other applications, according to the company. Cutting faster than a chainsaw bar, the Trim Ex 26S saw attachment features a 24-in. carbide-tipped forestry blade that spins at 3,000 rpm and operates with standard flow machines between 10 gpm to 27 gpm with no high flow needed. The operator hydraulically rotates the saw head from the cab as much as 180 degrees to optimize the cutting angle and increase productivity. The boom telescopes to 18 ft. total length, which provides

a working height of 26 ft. Combined, the high-speed saw, rotating head and telescoping boom allow the operator to make continuous, clean cuts from one machine position. By eliminating the need for chainsaws, bucket trucks or otherwise expensive, dedicated machinery, the Trim Ex 26S attachment can reduce the often manual labor of tree trimming to a tenth of its cost, according to the company. The attachment’s low maintenance is another cost-saving factor, as it does not have loose chains or require any bar oil for lubrication. Additionally, no operator components are near the actual cutting apparatus and the assembly allows the operator to trim from a distance safely inside a cab. A smaller saw attachment, the Trim Ex 18C, can fit on skid steers with a 1,300-lb. rated operated capacity. Compact in size, the Trim Ex 18C takes up as little as 4 in. on the front of an equipment trailer and the boom can be straight, offset to the machine side or folded for transport. The tree trimmer requires 10 gpm auxiliary flow and has a 10-ft. forward reach with an 18-ft. working height. Fecon also partnered with the founder of TREEfrogg to develop and design a dialectric saw attachment, the Trim Ex 26D, which offers added safety when trimming trees around power lines. It also is lighter in weight than the 26S model. For more than 30 years, Fecon has produced more than 25,000 mulcher heads with a presence in every continent. The acquisition of the TREEfrogg saw attachments complements Fecon’s current line of mulching attachments and extends Fecon’s reputation as a leader in the forestry mulching and vegetation management industry. Komatsu Changes MVT-II 600 Sizer as Part of Rebranding To support the company’s One Komatsu global strategy and the integration of their legacy companies into the Komatsu brand, sizers, reclaim feeders and surface feeder breakers will be rebranded to Komatsu natural yellow (from Joy orange). Displayed in the Komatsu booth at ConExpo-Con/AGG 2023 was the newly rebranded yellow MVT-II 600 sizer. For waste reduction in the quarry and cement production process, the Komatsu MVT-II 600 sizer uses matched velocity technology (MVT) to generate far less fines in product and help minimize waste production and disposal costs. The process uses tension — rather than compression — which can save significant energy. Timed center-sizing rolls enable teeth to mesh together and control product size in three dimensions. The no-clog crushing of the MVT-II 600 can consistently crush a combination of hard abrasive minerals and wet sticky material. Engineered for lower cost of ownership, the MVT-II 600 has replaceable bolt-on roll wear segments and durable pick technology. Shaft assemblies include cast wear segments with replaceable teeth for extended life. The MVT-II sizer can be installed where many other crushing technologies would not fit and at a potentially lower cost. Ideal for mobile or underground applications with a small machine envelope, secondary sizers can often be installed between conveyor transfer points to reconcile material handling issues. The sizer can potentially reduce the number of crush-

ing/dump stations required and can work with very large lump sizes to increase crushing ratios. For more information, visit www.komatsu.com. 

Waste Station Combines Small Loads to Reduce Total Trips ACE from page 47

These transfer stations by necessity must run clean to reflect the company’s green business initiatives and at the same time run in a very efficient manner due to the volume of trucks that are coming into the facilities each hour to prevent backups and frustrations to those that are using the facility. Trucks routinely get in and out of the transfer station in under 20 min. Great care also is taken to make sure that the facility is as clean as possible to maintain a good relationship with the neighbors of the facility. With a massive amount of material to be processed, Ace Intermountain Recycling is always looking for ways to streamline operations. The Salt Lake City facility processes between 1,600 to 1,800 tons of material a day. The Heber City facility is 15,000 sq. ft. and only processes construction recycling materials and processes approximately 260 tons of material a day. The Pleasant Grove facility receives all materials. The facility is 50,000 sq. ft. and processes approximately 800 to 900 tons of materials a day. Between the three facilities, a massive amount of material is being loaded, unloaded, stacked and sorted each day. The backbone of all that material processing is made up of a

fleet of predominantly Liebherr excavators. Each facility has its own fleet of Liebherr loaders and excavators running all day long. “As we have grown and expanded, we tried several different brands of excavators and loaders,” said Seth Burgess, controller of Ace Intermountain Recycling. “We’ve settled on the Liebherr brand, finding that they were really engineered for this type of work. This is a very harsh environment. It tends to really tear machines up. The Liebherr machines have held up by far, stronger than anything else we’ve tried.” As previously mentioned, the pressure is really on at a recycling facility to move loads in and out as fast as possible. “As our volume has grown, we’ve also had to move to larger excavators with the goal being to be able to move material faster,” Burgess said. “The key tool on each excavator is the grapple attachment that is used like a giant hand to pick up the materials and move them. This is a high wear item, it gets a lot of abuse, but how much material it can pick up and hold in one grab is the key to our success. “The decision was made to start moving towards larger excavators, thus the ability to use larger grapples. In the last eight months, we have purchased four of the Liebherr R936

machines. In Salt Lake City, we have reached our capacity, loading one truck at a time. So, our only option for growth was to start loading two trucks at a time. “With our previous excavators with a grapple, we were able to load a 34-ton load into a truck in 20 to 30 minutes,” Burgess added. “Currently, our goal of buying new excavators and larger grapples is to dramatically reduce that load time. We knew what excavators we were going to buy. We started to search as a team for the ideal grapple and our search led us to National Attachments. “We worked with Gabe Guimond at National Attachments who matched up what he felt would be the ideal grapple to work with our sized excavators. What he recommended for us was a 4 over 5 grapple built with heavy duty steel for severe duty which fully opens to 92 inches. The grapples are manufactured by NYE. “In talking with National Attachments, we felt very comfortable with their level of knowledge and expertise. They were very confident that they had the grapples that would excel in our application. When they were delivered, we knew we had made the right move. Everything about these grapples were far more impressive than what we had been using. The steel was heavier, the welds

were strong and perfect, they were beasts. It didn’t take long to find out that these grapples didn’t just look strong. We’ve been using them for a while now and where our previous grapples would start to wear and crack quickly, we’ve seen none of that with the NYE grapples. Our truck load time has changed dramatically from 20 to 30 minutes down to every nine to 10 minutes. That’s two trucks every nine to 10 minutes instead of one truck every 20 to 30 minutes. It has completely turned around the volume that we can process. “It’s a real game changer for us,” Burgess said. “We’ve gone from trucks being backed up and waiting to unload to completely eliminating the bottleneck. Mission accomplished. It was a team effort. We had to get the right durable, larger excavators from Liebherr and we needed to get the right recommendations for a grapple that would maximize the efficiency that the Liebherr excavators brought to the table and National Attachments got that done with the NYE grapples. It is a premium product and worth every penny. We had deadlines to meet, and they met all of our deadlines. Our initial order was for two grapples. We are now receiving our fourth.”  CEG (All photos courtesy of Ace Disposal.)

CDE Launches EvoWash Trade in Deal to Boost Its Sand Washing Efficiency Wheatcraft Materials Inc. was operating a traditional sand washing set-up with a horizontal classifying tank and sand screw. Its investment in a CDE EvoWash paid for itself within just four months.

With data from USGS (United States Geological Society) indicating that in some of the most densely populated urban centers across the United States demand for sand and gravel reserves often outstrips supply, CDE has launched a new campaign to support natural sand producers to adopt modern technological solutions to drive efficiency across their operations. Companies can now opt to swap their traditional sand screw for CDE’s EvoWash sand washing plant as part of a new trade in deal. With financing options available, the offer enables a quick and easy swap to help deliver increased inspec sand recovery. Proven Impact CDE EvoWash technology has already replaced sand screws across the United States and delivered significant return on investment for producers. A compact, modular sand washing system, the EvoWash screens and separates the smaller sand and gravel fractions through an integrated high-frequency dewatering screen, sump and hydrocyclones which provide enhanced control of silt cut points and eliminate the loss of quality fines with significant commercial value, the manufacturer said. Incorporating CDE’s Infinity Scree technology, the EvoWash offers optimal dewatering results which enables operators to produce a range of high-quality sands that are market-ready straight from the belt. Protecting revenue by eliminating the need for maintaining settling ponds, the EvoWash can integrate seamlessly into existing operations to reduce site footprint, minimize downtime and, with an increased number of parameters to ensure improved accuracy on the material cut point, remove the double-handling of materials, as high-value fines can often be lost and trapped at the bottom of ponds when processed with the more traditional sand screw. Curtis Wheatcraft, owner of Texas-based Wheatcraft Materials, said the traditional equipment once employed by the business had its limitations.

“One of the biggest challenges we identified was that we were losing valuable sand due to the inefficiencies of the older technology.” Wheatcraft Materials Inc. was operating a traditional sand washing set-up with a horizontal classifying tank and sand screw. Its investment in a CDE EvoWash paid for itself within just four months. Modern Solution Although sand screw technology has been essential to the quarrying industry over the years, increasing demand for sand and aggregate products, as well as increasingly stringent regulatory requirements, mean that operators must produce a wider range of materials in larger quantities and in less time to protect their return on investment and to turn a profit. CDE’s Vice President of Sales, Joe Teague, said, “Our aim is to support natural sand producers to maximize the efficiency of their operations and boost profitability by ensuring consistency in product output and increasing material retention while drastically reducing the cost of pond maintenance.” He said the traditional sand screw has been a cornerstone of the industry for almost a century. “Our industry was built on the back of this workhorse. The impact the sand screw has had is unquestionable and to this day it continues to be a significant element in the production process for construction and materials companies across the United States.” But modern day demand requires a modern solution, he added. “We’re operating at time when increasing pressures — regulatory, commercially, environmentally — mean it is crucial to extract maximum value from every grain of sand. Technology is the solution and can help transform a good operation into a great one. With the EvoWash in stock and just a few days to integrate into existing systems, we’re ready to take orders today.” For more information, visit cdegroup.com. 

The mobile impact crusher MOBIREX MR 100(i) NEO/ NEOe is the first family member of the new NEO line and is characterized by its efficiency and flexibility.

With the mobile impact crusher MOBIREX MR 100(i) NEO/NEOe, Kleemann presents the first family member of the new NEO line. The machine is efficient, powerful and extremely flexible — and all-electric operation is possible with the NEOe variant. Flexibility for Widest Range of Applications Due to their compact dimensions and a low transport weight, the MOBIREX MR 100(i) NEO/NEOe can be used flexibly, quickly and in a very wide variety of applications, according to the manufacturer. Operation in tight spaces on work sites or in frequently changing places of work is easily possible. Operation ranges from different recycling applications, such as the processing of concrete, rubble and asphalt, to the processing of soft to medium-hard natural stone. Sustainable Solutions Protect Operators, Environment The new impact crusher from Kleemann is available with two versions: Depending on the application area, it can be run allelectrically with the drive concept EDRIVE and thus, locally, free of CO2emissions [MR 100(i) NEOe]. Alternatively, the machine is available with the tried-andtested diesel-direct drive D-DRIVE. High Final Product Quality Very high product quality is expected from an impact crusher, and this is precise-

ly what the MOBIREX MR 100(i) NEO / NEOe delivers. This is guaranteed not only by the powerful crushing unit with its 4-ledged rotor with a large impact range and versatile rotor ledge options, but also by the 4.8 sq. yd. large, optional, singledeck secondary screening unit. This makes it possible to produce a classified final grain size. Through the use of an optional wind sifter, the final product quality can be additionally increased, the manufacturer said. Simple Plant Operation Due to a SPECTIVE operating unit specially tuned to the functions, operation of the MR 100(i) NEO / NEOe is simple and intuitive. With SPECTIVE CONNECT, operators have all relevant data on speed, consumption values and fill levels at their fingertips on a smartphone or tablet and prepared in a clearly arranged manner. SPECTIVE CONNECT also offers detailed troubleshooting aids to assist with service and maintenance. A unique feature in this machine class is the fully automatic crusher gap adjustment and zero-point determination. Zero-point determination compensates for wear during crusher start and a homogeneous crushing product is retained. The new impact crusher MOBIREX MR 100(i) NEO/NEOe will be introduced gradually starting in 2024 in Europe and in North America. For more information, visit www.wirtgen-group.com. 

Drones Proving to Be Indispensible for Site Monitoring TECHNOLOGY from page 1

In construction design and planning applications, AI technology synthesizes information, detects patterns and draws conclusions much like humans. It offers the ability to ramp up and streamline tasks in ways the industry has not been able to achieve up to now. Analyzing vast amounts of data, the technology offers options that give better information, models and alternatives for making decisions. “As the construction industry embraces the digital era, AIpowered tools are proving to be transformative,” said Ashi Soni, senior manager, sustainability of Bloom Energy. She said a wide range of technologies, from drones to autonomous vehicles are reshaping the future of infrastructure development. “The construction sector can anticipate even more innovative solutions … in the quest to build the roads and bridges of tomorrow.” Redefining Construction Planning Beginning with drones, Soni noted seven “cutting-edge” AI tools that she said are revolutionizing the infrastructure building process. She believes drones are becoming indispensable in the area of construction site monitoring. Providing real-time aerial views, the devices are helping project managers assess progress, identify issues and make informed decisions. “AI algorithms can analyze drone-captured data to detect anomalies, measure stockpile volumes and monitor worker safety, optimizing project management,” she said. When it comes to precision project planning, machine learning algorithms are impressing infrastructure designers, said Soni. Used to analyze factors such as historical data, weather patterns, traffic conditions, these algorithms generate accurate construction schedules. “By predicting potential delays and optimizing resource allocation, machine learning enhances project timelines and minimizes budget overruns,” said Soni. Autonomous construction vehicles, including heavy machines such as dozers and excavators, navigate construction sites safely and efficiently. Applying advanced computer vision and sensor technology, these machines increase productivity work continuously without human operators. The result, said Soni, is reduced labor costs and overall enhanced project speed toward completion. Smart materials, integrated with AI technology, have the ability to monitor their own structural health, added Soni. “These materials are embedded with sensors and AI algorithms that can detect signs of wear, damage or stress.” Real-time monitoring furthers proactive maintenance and prevents potential failures. The result is longer pavement and bridge life. AI tools can help identify potential risks and provide actionable insights into risk management when used in predictive analytics. Analyzing vast amounts of data, including project history, weather conditions and supplier performance, AI allows project managers to mitigate risks. The result of AI-driven predictive analytics is more resilient and successful construction projects, said Soni. Augmented reality is changing the way designs are visualized and construction teams are trained, she said. AR applications allow engineers and architects to overlay digital models onto the physical construction site.

With AI technology, bridge inspectors can monitor aging structures remotely in real-time.

These tools enable “a better understanding of spatial relationships and potential clashes,” said Soni. “Additionally, AR is being used for training purposes, providing immersive simulations for construction workers to enhance safety and proficiency.” Site managers are harnessing a subset of AI for real-time quality control on construction job sites. Computer vision joins high-resolution cameras and AI algorithms to analyze construction elements such as welding joints and concrete quality, said Soni. The technology ensures these elements meet specified construction standards to not only improve infrastructure quality. Computer vision features help reduce the need for manual inspections, saving time and resources, she said. Projecting Enormous Potential In a New York Times article, Colbi Edmonds wrote that

Analyzing vast amounts of data, AI offers options for better information, models and decision-making alternatives.

engineers are looking to AI to build more resilient projects for less money. A consortium is currently at work on two AI projects in partnership with Pennsylvania’s Department of Transportation and its Turnpike Commission. “These are structures, with the tools that we have, that save materials, save costs, save everything,” said Amir Alavi, University of Pittsburgh engineering professor. A member of the AI research consortium, Alavi sees enormous potential for more cost effective and creative new approaches to familiar tasks. “But experts caution against embracing the technology too quickly when it is largely unregulated and its payoffs remain largely unproven,” said Edmonds. Some in the industry worry about AI’s ability to design infrastructure in a process with regulators and participants operating over a long period of time. “Others worry that AI’s ability to draw instantly from the entirety of the Internet could lead to flawed data that produces unreliable results,” said Edmonds. Aging pavement means “infrastructure challenges are significant,” said Abdollah Shafieezadeh, professor at Ohio State University. The Pennsylvania research showcases the potential AI offers in addressing many of these challenges. The Pennsylvania DOT will use more durable concrete blocks, that require 20 percent less material, to build a bridge. The Turnpike Commission is engineering a more efficient noise-absorbing wall that also will capture some of the nitrous oxide emitted from vehicles. The plan is to build it in an area highly affected by highway sound pollution. Alavi noted the designs will save approximately 30 percent of material costs. These new projects have not been tested in the field, but they have been successful in the lab environment, he said. see TECHNOLOGY page 70

LINDER TURF & TRACTOR www.lindertt.com 4737 McConnell Center Drive • Greensboro, NC 27405 336-792-3412 Mecalac offers the AX1000 to improve material handling with added safety and visibility for utility, construction, landscaping and recycling.

The AX1000 features a rigid monoboom setup for enhanced strength, stability and visibility while lifting and loading on the job site.

Mecalac, a global designer, manufacturer and distributor of compact construction equipment for urban environments, offers the AX1000 articulated loader. Combining heavy-duty performance with self-stabilizing maneuverability and a sleek design, the AX1000 — and all models in the AX Articulated Loader Series — features maximum benefits in one cost-efficient package for utility, construction, landscaping and recycling. For a limited time, Mecalac is offering a $1,299 monthly payment, five-year operating lease through DLL, a global vendor finance company, for the AX1000 with a matching 60-month factory warranty. “Articulated loaders are tried and true workhorses in North America,” said Peter Bigwood, general manager of Mecalac North America. “When that’s what the job calls for, we have a high-quality option that has good value-adds in terms of stability, visibility, power, simplified maintenance and operator experience that will offer owners a competitive advantage.” The AX1000 stands out in a crowded market due to its monoboom. The single boom provides greater boom rigidity and strength, resisting the twisting that can occur with the traditional two-arm setup. Combining large, tinted windows with the unique monoboom design, the AX1000 eliminates the two loader arms obstructing the operator’s view and allows clear visibility to the left and right in addition to straight ahead. Along with enhanced safety, this outstanding visibility boosts productivity, the manufacturer said. Danny Potteiger, owner of C&S Mulch & Stone, handles about 5,000-plus yards of mulch a day, plus a couple thousand tons of stone, due to a good view of his truck bed from the cab of the AX1000. The AX1000 also offers greater stability because the machine’s pivot joint is offset at a positive angle. As the machine articulates, the center of gravity is transferred to the rear, so it can re-level itself, greatly reducing the risk of the machine toppling over. Along with the safety benefits, greater stability also opens up opportunities to expand use through different attachments, such as forks and snow pushers. Using the machine for multiple purposes can bring in additional sources of revenue or potentially reduce the

number of pieces of equipment a contractor needs to own, transport and maintain. Compact, but mighty, the AX1000 has a standard bucket volume of 1.3 cu. yds. plus a 75-hp engine compared to the typical 50-60 hp for its lift range. The machine has an industry-leading lift capacity of 9,038 lbs. Further, the AX1000 maintains lifting power from the ground to its highest point whereas other articulated loaders reach maximum lift capacity mid-way through the cycle, according to the manufacturer. Mecalac also updated its interior features to deliver an enhanced riding experience. The ergonomically laid-out pilot controls condense multiple functions from the auxiliary hydraulics into one joystick. The cabin includes a multi-position comfort seat, glove box with ample storage space and a powerful three-stage ventilation and heating system. The added aesthetics are not merely cosmetic but acknowledge the necessity for intuitive operation and a comfortable ride during a long day on the job, contributing to employee retention. By placing a keen focus on operator comfort and safety, Mecalac’s platform design allows operators to get into and out of the machine easily as well as complete 90 percent of daily checks on the ground, which boosts jobsite safety by mitigating the risk of falls. Another added benefit is the AX1000’s common diagnostic tools, which support quick service. Reduced downtime spent on maintenance means that the machine spends less time in the shop and more time in the field for added productivity. Other advantages include: • Travels up to 19 miles per hour • Uses a diesel oxidation catalyst for pollution control, so no need for a diesel particulate filter or diesel exhaust fluid and associated downtime Potteiger switched from a skid steer to an AX1000 several years ago to increase productivity and improve operator experience. “I needed a machine that was easier to get into, not so bouncy and more productive,” he said. “The AX1000 has made loading faster and more efficient while being a quiet machine with great visibility. It’s definitely operator friendly.” For more information, visit www.mecalac.com. 

Irvin Obituary...

J.M. Wood Auction’s Coy Timothy Irvin Passes Away Coy Timothy Irvin, a beloved member of the J.M. Wood Auction family, passed away on Nov, 13, 2023, in Gulfport, Miss. Born on Nov. 22, 1956, in Amory, Miss., Mr. Irvin lived a life filled with love, adventure and cherished connections with his family, friends and customers. He was known for his kind heart and a warm spirit that touched the lives of everyone he encountered. Mr. Irvin established his bona fides in the heavy equipment industry through managerial roles for both John Deere and Caterpillar dealers before transitioning to J.M. Wood Auction and eventually retiring in 2022 after 20 years. In 2002, Brenda Wood hired Mr. Irvin based on his stellar reputation in the equipment industry and his ability to manage relationships with customers, together they were a dynamic team. “We learned a lot from Tim,” said

Bryant Wood. “He single-handedly changed the way we thought about putting auctions together. Tim taught us to think bigger and aggressively pursue the acquisition of machinery for auctions. A key facet of that strategy became the building of equipment dealer relationships far and wide. We were so young back then…he mentored us by example with the strong industry friendships he had made before joining us.” Mr. Irvin’s customers were his friends, and his friends were his customers. However, he most cherished his family. Left to honor his memory are his loving companion Julie Bond; daughter Kimberly Irvin; mother Doris Irvin; grandchildren Chloe Carroll and John Robert Carroll; niece Katie Emelio; as well as other relatives and friends who were fortunate enough to have shared parts of their lives with him. 

We each become loyal to a brand, reluctant to change and stuck in our choices, perhaps knowing of no alternative. Another reason consumers don’t change is that they have not been introduced to a viable alternative option. Thinking there is safety in the known. So, is the unknown scary? Is changing difficult? Not with Yoder & Frey. Come and talk to us at Kissimmee, between the 15th and 17th February 2024, or before, and we think you’ll be surprised,” said Thurston. 
