The construction industry is doing its level best to deal with a rare triple punch: Unusually high and rising materials costs, a massive supply-chain bottleneck and decreasing demand for projects. The ripple effect of these challenges could weaken the contractor community, but a heavy dose of cooperation and communication is helping many to navigate the challenges. Ford to Build $5.6B Electric Truck Plant in W. Tennessee

Site concept map

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee announced Sept. 27 that Ford Motor Co. has selected the Memphis Regional Megasite for one of the largest battery and vehicle manufacturing campuses in the United States, a $5.6 billion investment creating 5,700 jobs. “West Tennessee is primed to deliver the workforce and quality of life needed to create the next great American success story with Ford Motor Company and SK Innovation,” Lee said in a statement. “This is a watershed moment for Tennesseans as we lead the future of the automotive industry and advanced manufacturing.” The multi-billion commitment by Ford and SK Innovation, a South Korean battery maker, will fund the construction of a 3,600acre mega campus called Blue Oval City about 50 mi. northeast of Memphis, where production of next generation all-electric FSeries trucks will begin in 2025. The site is located just north of Interstate 40 in Haywood County, near its border with Fayette County. The new plant represents the largest investment in the electric vehicle (EV) industry in Tennessee, which leads all other southeastern states in EV manufacturing. Construction is set to start by the end of the year, the Memphis Commercial Appeal reported Sept. 28. When completed, Blue Oval City will be the largest vehicle and battery manufacturing campus in the United States and the first that’s carbon neutral, said Bill Ford, executive chair of the Ford Motor Co.

“We’re looking at every aspect of production, every drop of water, every ounce of raw material, every watt of electricity,” he explained. “Our vision is to create a closed plain loop of auto manufacturing. This will set a new standard for American manufacturing.” New EV Training Center Part of Plan Lee said the project also will include a new Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT) to be developed on the Memphis Regional Megasite in conjunction with Ford Motor Company and SK Innovation’s Blue Oval City. A news release from Lee’s office noted that the new TCAT will provide customized training that will focus on EV and electric battery manufacturing and repair with the curriculum concentrating on mechatronics engineering and automechanics. “We are continuing to prepare a pipeline of skilled workers who are equipped for the future of advanced auto manufacturing, students who are prepared for life beyond the classroom and workers who can make a great living,” Lee said. Construction Numbers Are Impressive Besides the expected 5,700 jobs the project should bring to the West Tennessee project, another 33,000 construction positions will be needed initially, according to Bob Rolfe, commissioner of the Tennessee

Department of Economic and Community Development (ECD). Once the facilities are finished, they should bring 27,000 direct and indirect jobs to support the site’s operations, the Tennessee Lookout reported. This will result in more than $1.02 billion in annual earnings. Rolfe said that the state also expects the Blue Oval City project to generate temporary construction benefits that will include $5.6 billion spent on land, buildings and other real property improvements. Additionally, the salaries related to its construction activities may total around $1.87 billion. In all, the Memphis Regional Megasite project is anticipated to contribute $3.5 billion each year to the state’s gross state product. “The ripple effect resulting from these projects will be transformational for our state, especially West Tennessee, and we are most grateful for this enormous investment and the addition of two top global brands,” Rolfe said in a statement. “To have such a world-renowned American company land as our first tenant at the Memphis Regional Megasite underscores the site’s strength and potential for additional joint venture partners and suppliers.” Completely New Type of Facility for Ford The Tennessee Lookout noted that Blue Oval City will be designed to be the largest,

most advanced, and most efficient automotive production campus in Ford’s history. The campus will include the Ford assembly plant, a supplier park and a battery manufacturing plant operated by BlueOvalSK, a joint venture of Ford and SK Innovation. The site will become a vertically integrated ecosystem with key suppliers and battery manufacturing on the same campus where Ford will assemble next generation all-electric FSeries trucks. In addition to the multi-billion-dollar investment from Ford, the state of Tennessee intends to offer an enhanced incentive totaling more than $500 million for successful completion of the project, the news source reported. “Tennessee is playing a key role in leading American advanced manufacturing, and we are thrilled to make this historic investment in West Tennessee to create Blue Oval City,” said Lisa Drake, Ford North America’s chief operating officer. “This once in a generation investment will create thousands of high-quality jobs and support America’s transition to electric vehicles. Tennessee will play a critical role as Ford continues to lead the electric vehicle revolution, tackle climate change, and create the jobs of tomorrow. We look forward to working to create the future together.” Lee intends to call a special legislative session in Nashville this fall to address funding, buildout and oversight for the Memphis Regional Megasite. 

Volvo, Ascendum Boosts Success of Tenn. Construction Firm By Eric Olson CEG CONTRIBUTING EDITOR

There are few road projects that have taken place in western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee in recent decades that did not rely on Knoxville-based Harrison Construction Company for the materials and services needed to complete the work successfully. A subsidiary of CRH Americas, North America’s largest building materials company, Harrison Construction provides contractors and the two state transportation agencies with aggregate through its various quarries, as well as asphalt production, paving and construction and ready-mix concrete plants, the latter of which is only available in Tennessee. One of the key parts of its operation, though, has also come from being a paving contractor for big highway and road surface projects in the region, said Scott Bennis, regional equipment manager for the company. “In both North Carolina and Tennessee, Interstate 40 has always been a major part of what we do,” he said, noting that much of the work is in mountainous terrain. “It seems like every year we are paving part of that freeway. We just finished improving 15 miles from the Tennessee state line east into North Carolina, and now we are completing another 12 to 13 miles on the east side of Buncombe County [N.C.] In Tennessee, we are also paving portions of I-40, and alongside other contractors on I-26 where we are performing all the asphalt work.” The portion of the interstate that is closest to the line separating the two states also is prone to dangerous rockslides that frequently block the route and other secondary roadways. When that occurs, Bennis said, Harrison Construction provides contractors with the materials needed to repair I-40 and mitigate each rockfall. “Also, among the bigger construction jobs we have done recently was paving the runway expansions at the Asheville airport,” he added. “It proved to be a challenge because you cannot just shut down the airport.”

"This asphalt facility here is called the Enka plant and it is one of our busier ones because it is located close to the city of Asheville,” Bennis said. “In all, we have 19 asphalt plants that produce a million tons of product.” In general, he said, Harrison Construction maintains an asphalt plant close to each of its quarries — if possible, on the same campus. However, because some of its asphalt facilities are in remote locations, the company will turn to its competitors with nearby mines for product. For instance, rather than paying the trucking fee to move stone from its Waynesville mine to the Enka asphalt plant, Bennis said that Harrison gets what it needs from the Vulcan quarry right next door. “Yes, we are buying from one of our competitors, but we have a great relationship with them,” he said. “And it so much less expensive to do so.” Volvo CE Provides Product Reliability Harrison Construction depends heavily on the reliability of Volvo Construction Equipment in every part of its business, Bennis said. His company acquires its Volvos through Ascendum Machinery, the Charlotte-based equipment distributor with branch locations in Asheville and Knoxville, as well as in 10 other regional cities. In Harrison’s aggregate operations, Volvo excavators are employed in the quarries, while the maker’s wheel loaders work to feed the construction company’s ready-mix plants and service its asphalt facilities. Volvo loaders also fill Harrison’s customer trucks with aggregates at its mines, according to Bennis, and on the company’s construction and paving side, its crews have several Volvo rollers — DD25B through DD90HF double-drum; SD70D single-drum; and PT125 pneumatic rollers — at their disposal. Volvo’s new H series L180 loader, a more efficient,

Scott Bennis, regional equipment manager of Harrison Construction Company.

stronger and faster machine than its former iteration, was purchased this year through Ascendum for Harrison Construction’s asphalt plant in Hendersonville, N.C., he said. “We have also preferred to use the five-yard capacity L180 loaders for our customer trucks,” Bennis said. “In addition, we are buying a L70H for our Morristown, Tenn., see HARRISON page 36

Ninety-Three Years, Still Growing Harrison Construction traces its roots back to 1928 when E.J. Harrison founded the company in Pittsburgh, Pa. Just before World War II, E.J.’s son relocated the operation to Maryville, Tenn., after purchasing an asphalt and concrete plant near where Alcoa had its aluminum factory — a move that introduced Harrison into the paving and construction business. It was bought in 1972 by another company that allowed Harrison Construction to operate under its own name, before being acquired by CRH in 2006. Following a restructuring of its North American operations, CRH added Harrison to its Southern Atlantic Region, one of four nationwide groups within CRH Americas Materials. Asphalt Plants Often Paired With Quarries “Harrison Construction is a vertically integrated company, so we produce crushed stone, which is then used to make asphalt at our plants, before our construction crews apply the finished product onto the roads,” said Bennis, from Harrison’s Asheville, N.C., repair shop, the centralized service location for all the company’s rolling stock working in the western part of the state. The branch also includes an asphalt plant, with Harrison’s nearest granite quarry in Waynesville, 30 mi. to the west, from which crushed granite is made.

Harrison Construction Company acquires its Volvos through Ascendum Machinery, the Charlotte-based equipment distributor with branch locations in Asheville and Knoxville, as well as in 10 other regional cities.

CNH Industrial N.V. announced that it has joined the 5G Open Innovation Lab (5GOILab), a global applied innovation ecosystem for corporations, academia and government institutions working on developing 5G technologies, as corporate partner. “We are incredibly excited to join the 5G Open Innovation Lab as their first industry partner for precision agriculture. This unique platform enables us to collaborate with innovative startups and engage with bright minds working on transformative 5G technologies in the agricultural space,” said Scott Wine, chief executive officer, CNH Industrial. “This partnership underscores our commitment to aggressively enhance our precision farming portfolio through the development of new connected digital technologies that allow our customers to unlock their farms’ true potential." “Rural connectivity is the foundation for many digital technologies and we are excited about how connectivity will enhance the user experience for our Case IH and New Holland customers and dealers. Novel digital solutions help increasing crop yields while reducing input costs through more precise application, precisely steer equipment on a predetermined guidance path in the field, provide more predictive maintenance and wirelessly connect the field and the office,” explained Parag Garg, chief digital officer, CNH Industrial. “These digital technologies not only support the productivity and profitability of a farming operation, but they also promote more sustainable solutions and environmental stewardship. 5G solutions and edge computing provide the necessary infrastructure to accelerate the development of realworld solutions that elevate our business and empower our customers. We are thrilled to jointly conduct pilots on rural connectivity and edge computing that will demonstrate the benefits to our Case IH and New Holland customers and their dealers.” The 5G Open Innovation Lab recently launched its first application development field lab for the agricultural industry with dedicated access to a 5G-capable, CBRS LTE private network and edge computing platform, which will serve CNH Industrial as a dynamic testing platform to pilot digital farming solutions for its customers. The 5G Open Innovation Lab selects 15 to 20 member companies twice a year in the spring and fall to join the ecosystem and participate in its 12-week program. During this time, program companies work closely with the founding and corporate partners to accelerate monetization opportunities of 5G, edge computing and other use cases and solutions globally across a variety of industries. Placement of pipe is done with a Komatsu PC 238USLC mid-sized excavator.

A Komatsu PC 210LCi and a PC 360LC work in tandem for rapid excavation.

McElhenney Construction Relies On TEC, Komatsu Machines McElhenney Construction Company, based in Mobile, Ala., is working towards rapid completion of a boat launch for Baldwin County, Ala. The project includes construction of six ramps for boat launching, approximately 8 acres of parking and boat mooring facilities around the perimeter of the inlet, with breakwaters on the end. The total acreage of this county-owned property is approximately 40-plus acres, with just 20 of the acres being utilized for this construction. Parking for the project will be paved and there will be an additional 2 acres of graveled parking, restroom facilities and a future boardwalk. “This was needed badly and will help to get boaters into the intercoastal canal towards Mobile Bay or to the Gulf of Mexico,” McElhenney VP of Operations John Bush said. “A county engineer said this will be the largest boat launch facility on the entire Gulf Coast when finished.” For McElhenney Construction, this is a 120-working-day project, so speed and total accuracy is key to the construc-

tion. “This needs to be finished by March of 2022 and be completely ready for the spring season,” Bush said. Rain has been a challenge for dirt work. Prior to the mass earth moving that currently is under way, a crane was brought in to assist subcontractor Jordan Pile Driving in building a cofferdam. Overall totals for earthmoving are just over 100,000 cu. yds. in a somewhat short amount of time with rather wet material. Despite rain stormafter rain storm, the project is still on schedule and three of the six ramps have been poured. Sixty thousand cu. yds. of the material will be hauled away from the site. The company keeps a brisk pace and is working the site

five days a week, at least 10 hours a day, with 10 to 12 employees. McElhenney Construction is self-performing all work for the project, with the exception of water/sewer, pile driving, associated mooring work and asphalt work. Mobile Asphalt has been selected to perform the asphalt work and Grant Nichols Construction will do the utilities work. Other marine work is being performed by Cassity Brothers Construction. Dredge work will be done by MD Thomas Construction. The project began on June 1, 2021. To ensure rapid and precise completion, McElhenney Construction purchased a new Komatsu PC360LC and a new Komatsu D51PXi dozer to add to its existing fleet of Komatsu machines.

Three Komatsu D51PXi intelligent machine control dozers play a big part in the earthmoving accuracy required on the project.

MB Crusher Lends Hand in Tight Construction Spaces It’s well-known that working in enclosed spaces multiples problems: it means facing challenges every day such as lack of access routes, little room to maneuver, managing incoming and outgoing trucks, managing materials and protecting workers. As a result of the challenges, time and the costs of labor increase, which puts companies in a difficult position. However, there are available solutions: knowing what they are means opening your eyes to a new way of managing tasks with excellent results and turning expenses into a revenue source. Hard to Access Areas, Limited Maneuvering No Longer Problem The most common challenges on construction sites in enclosed environments are hard to access and have limited maneuvering spaces. In quarries, tunnels, mines and construction sites inside factories or warehouses, managing incoming and outgoing materials are complex. MB Crusher’s attachments enter the tightest places and manage materials directly on site. The results are obvious: reduced waste, zero transportation costs and increasing the yard’s profitability. MB Crusher’s entire range is designed to work even where space is limited because each product attaches to any brand excavator, even mini-excavators, turning them into a powerful crusher. MB Crusher’s drum cutters make it even easier to work in enclosed spaces. Making it the most effective solution to process only the material they needed with precision. Companies equipped with MB Crusher’s units can independently recover and process waste materials, reduce costs and become more competitive, according to the manufacturer. Extracting Materials Without Explosives Another critical point of working in enclosed spaces such as quarries and mines is managing the explosives and the workers’ safety. In these situations, MB Crusher’s units have changed methods and how prof-

MB Crusher’s attachments enter the tightest places and manage materials directly on site.

itable companies are. For example, in a mine in Albania, extracting iron-nickel happened using explosives, which comes with the costs of the explosives and the safety measures. None of the operators were aware of an equally effective alternative method. By inserting MB Crusher’s units, they abandoned using explosives, and extraction happens with the MB-R700 drum cutter installed on an 18,000 lb. Bobcat 442. A drastic change for the company and also the entire sector. The same attachment has been used in many quarries and mines, solving the problems surrounding using explosives for extraction. Furthermore, MB Crusher’s drum cutters are an effective answer to mill only the necessary material without generating waste

material that they need to dispose of. They also avoid creating dangerous vibrations if they work underneath roads, excavations located in cities, or inside industrial warehouses close to other buildings. In Mexico, as a recent example, for them to build a drainage tunnel underneath a busy road, they couldn’t use a hammer since it would have created too many vibrations. However, an MB Crusher MB-R500 drum cutter installed on a mini-excavator solved the job without creating vibrations or cracks in the walls — they only processed the material they needed. Immediate Operational, Economic Benefits The units from MB Crusher’s range present a turning point for organizations working in enclosed spaces to become faster and eco-

nomically advantageous. Let’s look at an example of a job in South Tyrol in Italy, where an industrial warehouse’s floor had to be dismantled and redone. By inserting a BF120.4 crusher bucket on the Doosan excavator present on site, all of the inert material was crushed onsite and used to create the new layer for the new flooring. Easy to install and operate, MB Crusher’s attachments transform any material into a resource, even enclosed environments or on construction sites that are hard to access. With its products, MB Crusher has revolutionized the process and turned construction sites into autonomous crushing centers that yield excellent performance and increase profitability, the company said. Komatsu’s Newest Blasthole Drill — ZR122 — Works in Diverse Conditions To support customers that want to boost productivity with an advanced drill, Komatsu premiered its newest blasthole drill, the ZR122, at MINExpo 2021. Engineered for high productivity drilling in tough rock conditions, this drill is built to help reduce maintenance costs, support fully autonomous operation, and can be configured for rotary and hammer drilling, diesel or electric power, and single- or multipass drilling, according to the manufacturer. As part of the ongoing process to integrate its legacy brands into One Komatsu, the newest drill model and technology was showcased on the Komatsu ZR122 with the new look and branding. This new look will transition legacy brands to the Komatsu brand this year, which includes the P&H 77XR.

Designed to increase drilling time, the rack-and-pinion pulldown system reduces the maintenance time required to support the old cable or chain pulldown and the boxer style

mast reduces downtime for structural inspections. To help reduce bit change downtime and worker risk associated with a manual changeout process, an advanced auto-bit changer carousel helps to flex into a new hole diameter rapidly so operators can seamlessly adapt the drill pattern to reach peak fragmentation quickly. The one-touch, auto-bit operation keeps productivity going with a five-minute change. Customers can elevate their mine’s productivity by improving drilling accuracy with high-precision GPS through auto-navigation capabilities, allowing line-ofsight teleremote operations from up to one mile away. AGC: Know Steps You Can Take to Lessen Cost Pains

As construction projects launch, the need for materials and supplies has increased, creating a surge in demand weighing on the supply chain. CHALLENGES from page 1

“exceptionally steep and fast-rising costs for a variety of materials, compounded by major supply-chain disruptions and stagnant or falling demand for projects — a combination that threatens the financial health of many contractors.” No single solution will resolve the situation, Simonson, association economist, wrote in the AGC’s latest Inflation Report. But he believes there are steps that government officials, owners and contractors can take to lessen the pain. “While contractors cannot unclog ports or rescind tariffs, they can provide project owners with timely and credible third-party information about changes in relevant material costs and supply-chain snarls that may impact the cost and completion time for a project,” he said. For their part, owners “can authorize appropriate adjustments to design, completion date and payments to accommodate or work around these impediments,” he added. Pinpointing Problem The adverse effect of pockets of construction expansion on the supply chain is creating headaches. “As construction projects continue to rise, general contractors’ needs for materials and supplies have also increased, which has created a surge of demand that’s been weighing on the supply chain,” said Eric Collin, owner and president of Firmo Construction, Sarasota, Fla. “We all know well that the availability and prices of many of the materials used by construction contractors have been affected dramatically since the start of the COVID19 pandemic,” wrote Mike Sanders, bond manager of Old Republic Surety. “Many materials are difficult to find, and

Contractors should monitor costs and delivery schedules for materials, and communicate with owners, both before submitting bids and throughout the construction process.

when they are found, they are at extremely high prices as compared to the cost before the pandemic,” he wrote for Insurance Journal. Some of the materials most noticeably affected include lumber, products made from copper and steel and plumbing fixtures. “While other unique factors contribute, the biggest culprits for the volatility are the COVID lockdowns, COVID restrictions, business closures, higher-than-expected demand and a reduction of the available workforce in the industries that produce and distribute these materials,” he said, adding that some traditionally off-the-shelf materials are taking weeks or even months for delivery. Contractors may be feeling a big pinch, especially on projects originated prior to the pandemic, said Sanders. In many cases, he added, materials suppliers will not lock in their quoted prices for the amount of time the contractor needs to ensure the prices they ultimately pay do not exceed those contemplated at the time their bid was made. “Some suppliers will not lock prices in for any longer than a week, and some contractors report that certain suppliers are unwilling to lock prices in for more than a day.” Running an End-Around Simonson of AGC said though nobody welcomes a higher bill, the alternative of having a contractor go out of business because of impossible costs or timing is likely to be worse for many project owners.

For projects that have not been awarded or started, he suggests owners start with realistic expectations about current costs and the likelihood of increases. They should provide potential bidders with accurate and complete design information to enable bids that minimize the likelihood of unpleasant surprises for either party. Owners and bidders may want to consider price-adjustment clauses that would protect both parties from unanticipated swings in materials prices, said Simonson. “Such contract terms can enable the contractor to build in a smaller contingency to its bid, while providing the owner an opportunity to share in any savings from downward price movements [which are likely at some point, particularly for long-duration projects],” he said. The parties also may want to discuss the best timing for ordering materials and components. Buying items earlier than usual can provide protection against cost increases, suggested Simonson. “But purchase before use entails paying sooner for the items; potentially paying for storage, security against theft and damage and the possibility of design changes that make early purchase unwise.” AGC has long encouraged federal trade policy officials to end tariffs and quotas on imported products and materials. The association maintains that with many U.S. mills and factories already at capacity, bringing in

more imports at competitive prices will cool the overheated price spiral and enable many users of products that are in short supply to avoid layoffs and shutdowns. “Officials at all levels of government should review all regulations, policies and enforcement actions that may be unnecessarily driving up costs and slowing importation, domestic production, transport and delivery of raw materials, components and finished goods,” Simonson said in his report. “Owners need to recognize that significant adjustments are probably appropriate regarding the price or delivery date of projects that were awarded or commenced early in the pandemic or before, when conditions at suppliers were far different.” And contractors need to closely monitor costs and delivery schedules for materials and to communicate information with owners, both before submitting bids and throughout the construction process, said Simonson. “Materials prices do eventually reverse course. Owners and contractors alike will benefit when that happens.” Communication is key, said Carl Pebworth and Rachael Stack of the law firm Faegre Drinker Biddle & Reath. It’s crucial for owners, contractors and other “downstream” construction partners to contemplate and address concerns from the beginning, they said. “With respect to material price increases, see CHALLENGES page 58

Harrison Construction Has Confidence in Ascendum, Volvo HARRISON from page 14

ready-mix plant, which is the smallest loader that we use. Although we were initially looking for a larger model, the folks at Ascendum in Tennessee advised us that the L70 would be the proper loader for that application.” Although not able to rate the Volvo machines from an operator’s point of view, Bennis has instead evaluated them from an equipment management perspective — both the machines’ price tag and cost per hour. Because fuel expenses are a major outlay for Harrison Construction, the manufac-

turer’s ongoing efforts to improve the efficiency of each model is most appreciated by Bennis.

Full Faith, Confidence He prefers to think of Ascendum as a trusted partner of Harrison’s rather than a vendor, he said, because the support his company receives from the equipment dealer has been so beneficial to the construction firm. For example, if a Volvo loader goes down, the company can count on Ascendum to quickly provide service support to reduce downtime or avoid shutting down its production. “That is key for us because we don’t have spare machines just sitting around,” Bennis said. “Our philosophy is to buy top quality equipment that meets our expected lifecycle for those machines. They must be able to perform and be available for that period.” So, despite maintaining a large shop in Asheville, where Harrison can take care of many of its own maintenance and repair needs, it sometimes calls on Ascendum’s advanced service expertise for assistance. “It is often quite difficult for us to keep up with the technological advances on this equipment, espeHarrison Construction depends heavily on the reliability of Volvo cially with the emissions requireConstruction Equipment in every part of its business. ments on the newer machines,”

Harrison Construction Company’s Enka asphalt plant in Candler, N.C.

Bennis said. “Becoming proficient in working on the Tier IV engines just takes a lot of training, which we certainly provide our people, but the ability to get a quick turnaround time to get our machines up and running again has proven to be plenty for our technicians to do. Luckily, we can count on the added support of our partners at Ascendum.” To illustrate the point, he said that with multiple Volvo wheel loaders at his company’s asphalt plants, many of which are newer machines, a piece of equipment will sometimes experience an active emissions fault. “Once that happens, the loader’s engine will derate, and if we have an asphalt crew and other people relying on the machine to remove our material, calls are made to Ascendum,” Bennis said. “They respond very quickly and do all that they can to get that loader operating again. “For that and other reasons, we just appreciate Ascendum and all they do for us.” Harrison Construction Company maintains 42 different operational facilities in North Carolina and Tennessee (including a quarry in north Georgia). Ten quarries supply the firm with aggregate products, 19 asphalt plants stay busy producing material for paving and 13 concrete plants can be found in eastern Tennessee. NCDOT Oversees $365M Blue Ridge Road Improvements By Cindy Riley

NCDOT photo

CEG CORRESPONDENT

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is overseeing a $365 million undertaking known as the I-440 and Blue Ridge Road project. The improvements to I-440, between just south of Walnut Street in Cary and north of Wade Avenue in Raleigh, are being made to improve traffic flow, access and efficiency. “This segment of I-440 has four lanes and forms a bottleneck between the six through lanes at both ends, causing congestion, which is forecast to increase,” said NCDOT resident engineer Chad Hinnant. “In addition to high traffic volumes creating congestion, the project corridor experiences above average rates of crashes. “Built in the 1960s, it also is the oldest section of I-440, and needs rehabilitation. The roadway and interchanges have substandard design elements, such as poor sight lines, narrow shoulders and medians and short acceleration and deceleration lanes.” The widening of I-440 will coincide with lowering the grade of Blue Ridge Road and constructing new bridges for Hillsborough Street (N.C. 54), Norfolk Southern Railway/North Carolina Railroad/CSX Transportation and Beryl Road to reduce congestion and train-related conflicts with vehicles and pedestrians. A new connector road will link Blue Ridge and Hillsborough. According to Hinnant, now is a good time to perform the work. “I-440/U.S. 1-64 is an important link in the region’s transportation network. It provides access from the region to numerous major destinations near the project corridor that generate high volumes of traffic, either daily or during special events. In addition, I-440 in the project study area was constructed more than 50 years ago, and is the oldest section of the Raleigh Beltline. “The roadway and interchanges in this section of I-440 have substandard design elements such as poor sight lines, narrow shoulders and medians and short acceleration/deceleration lanes. Also, due to the age of the facility, the pavement, structures and interchanges need rehabilitation.” As with most road projects, drivers are having to make some adjustments. NCDOT has taken steps to assist

motorists during the construction. “There is extensive use of positive protection and several mainline shifts and temporary ramps being used to maintain interchange movements. Multi-haul operations are occurring at night and during off-peak hours. “There has been coordination with emergency service providers, Wake County Public Schools, Triangle Transit, Capital Area Transit and others, as necessary, during construction regarding access changes and detours. Also, there has been specific coordination with the NC State Fair, PNC Arena, Meredith College and North Carolina State University regarding the project construction schedule.” see NCDOT page 48

New Mulcher Helps Contractor Stack Deck in His Favor Todd Hyatt is familiar with forestry mulchers, having used them on land clearing projects, pasture clearing and around his own property. They tackle brush as well as felled and standing trees, leaving a carpet of mulch in their wake. They are a good “go-to” tool for an aesthetically pleasing project. He also knows that not every job requires the fine grinding that mulchers provide. So, when Hyatt purchased 20 wooded acres in south Louisiana, he wanted an ace in the hole. Hyatt opted for a Fecon FDM74 deck mulcher and an ASV RT-120 Forestry model to clear the Chinese tallow trees, oaks, elms, pines and all the underbrush that surrounded them. He was pleased when he got it cleared in record time, with much lower operating costs. Deck mulchers have been around for years. Armed with rotary blades, they are a good way to mitigate brush, eliminate small trees, and other vegetation management projects. Unlike other deck mulchers, the Fecon is designed and built with “heavy duty” in mind. Strenx performance steel forms the body, making it ideal for the rigors of forestry work. The bearing carrier houses a heavy-duty bearing with an oversized shaft. The beefy bearing easily accommodates the extra blade mass which increases cutting inertia, enhancing performance in thick materials. Hyatt likes how much sturdier the Fecon deck mulcher is than his previous mulcher heads, saying “If you hit a good log, it used to bend the housing [on his previous deck mulchers]. Now it’s built so heavy I don’t have to worry about that.” Anything too big to cut through still isn’t a problem due to the stump-jumper feature, which

allows the Fecon to ride over stumps or other debris without risking bolt shearing. This makes it much easier to clear areas that are unfamiliar and could have large rocks or cinderblocks or other various detritus scattered throughout. Riding over these obstructions saves time and money, especially compared to drum mulchers. When a drum mulcher hits a stump, it can break a tooth, which costs both time and money. Depending on the severity of the damage, the teeth may need to be replaced before it can he run. This downtime can be expensive both in

terms of actual costs, as Hyatt noted that the teeth are not inexpensive, and lost production time. Hyatt appreciates how forgiving this feature can be to users, commenting “If you hear the blade hit, you can back up and ride over it. If you hear other mulching heads hit it’s too late, you’ve already broken teeth.” By eliminating the threat of damage and repairs, the stump-jumper feature makes clearing areas much

faster and more economical. A 2-in. wider cutting area allows Hyatt to cover more ground with each pass, further enhancing his productivity with the Fecon deck mulcher. Serrated brush hooks pull debris in to clear piled material or fence rows faster. Specially designed two-sided blades effectively double service life without having to flip the blade. Easily accessible hydraulic hose connections allow Hyatt to reverse the

cutting direction to use the opposing side of the blade. Hyatt described the Fecon deck mulcher as “Tougher, and more forgiving to its user.” With built-in strength and durability, as well as the ability to ride over anything that it can’t cut, make the Fecon deck mulcher ideal for clearing areas of thick foliage quickly. According to Hyatt, “It doesn’t slow down. Unless you get into something really big, it’s as fast as you’re willing to ride it.” That toughness and durability gave Hyatt the peace of mind to load up his FDM74 and travel to central Texas where he cleaned up a ranch used primarily for recreational hunting. The mountain juniper, cedar, elm and black oak ranged from 3 to 8 in. in diameter, but neither they nor the hilly, rocky terrain were an impediment. It was

hard to determine productivity in acres/day because a lot of what Hyatt was mulching was fire lines and food plots rather than clear cutting or forest thinning. He estimated that the deck mulcher was 1/3 faster than a drum mulcher in actual mulching time, and on this project would be much faster because the rocky soil would wreak havoc with drum mulcher teeth. Hyatt was so astounded at how fast it operated on these projects that he’s got plenty of projects lined up for it. He splits his time — about half working his own land and half contracting out, including a 560-acre family ranch in Westhoff, Texas, where he’ll take the senderos, mesquite, elm and huisache trees from a riverbed. He’s excited at how easy the job will be, saying “It’s going to be a bunch of trees, probably four to six inches big around, and that thing ought to go right through them.” With six integrated tie downs and lift points, Hyatt has no trouble loading and securing it during transport between job sites. Secured to a Big Tex Flatbed Trailer, he hauls it anywhere and everywhere with his Dodge 1-ton truck. Hyatt bought the deck mulcher and the ASV RT-120F from Deep South Equipment in Baton Rouge, La., who he described as “Very knowledgeable and helpful during and after the sale.” Having the right tools in your toolbox can make all the difference in a land clearing project. Hyatt thinks of his Fecon FDM74/RT120F combination as his “ace in the hole” and knows that whether he’s clearing on a pipeline project, under-brushing ranch land for hunting, or cleaning up his own properties, with the FDM74 the deck is stacked in his favor. Komatsu Dozers, Excavators Keep McElhenney On Target KOMATSU from page 24

Complete and total accuracy is a necessity on the project, and three Komatsu D51PXi dozers and a Komatsu PC210LCi excavator, all Komatsu Intelligent Control Machines, are utilized extensively for continuous digging and grading work. Simultaneously with the earthmoving, approximately 2,000 ft. of various sized pipe is being installed by McElhenney for sewer and water and storm drain purposes. Environmentally, McElhenney made sure all bases were covered, including placement of a turbidity curtain, which extends 6 ft. down into the water to prevent any turbid water from getting into the canal and was placed before any initial excavation was started. When asked about the staff of its Komatsu dealer, Tractor & Equipment Co. (TEC)., McElhenney Construction’s Bush said, “they’re great to work with. There’s a good reason you look around this job site and you pretty much see nothing but Komatsu. Everything else on the project is for the most part, a rental or a subcontractor’s machine.” Bush went on to tout the service work of TEC and the attention to detail of service manager Robert Bush. He said that most of the company’s machines are under the Komatsu Care program, so service work is performed after hours when machines are idle. John Bush also gave high praise for others in the TEC organization. “I’ve been working with Chris Howard, our TEC rep, since 2010 and we’ve become friends and he’s been great to work with for all of our purchases. “We run a lot of Topcon and TEC’s technology rep, Richie Sievering, helps us to get the most out of our machine control and all of our electronics. He’s only a phone call away. If we have any questions, he can walk us through any issues we might have.” Josh McElhenney, company owner, reinforced what Bush said and expounded on his thoughts by saying “TEC’s customer care is far and above the others, and that means so much to us when we’re trying to get something done. I feel like they’re a part of our team and they take ownership in making sure you have great tractors, and great tractors that Company Owners Josh and Kelly McElhenney keep work. They get you what you need and that goes a long their crews and machines all over the Gulf Coast runway.” ning smoothly from their Mobile, Ala., office. All earth moving is being done through GPS and machine control systems. “We won’t drive the first stake on this job. There will be no hubs or blue tops, just machine control and electronics running from one base unit,” said Bush. Overall, the project seems to be going like clockwork. At any given time, McElhenney Construction has around six different jobs going on at once. This one in Orange Beach is the largest of its current projects under way. Josh McElhenney attributes success on his projects to “really, really good people.” “They love to work” he said. “John [Bush], Matt [Averett] and Greg [Elmore] have done a great job to keep this project on schedule. “This is a really cool project, and I’m proud that we got the opportunity to do it. We’ll definitely do it right. We’re going to The addition of forestry tires helps a Komatsu WA 270-wheel loader use it ourselves when this is complete.”  work in the sandy and marshy conditions.

McElhenney uses a Komatsu PC 210LC excavator to load up its dump trucks for moving material off site.

Turbidity curtains were placed before excavation began to ensure an environmentally friendly environment is maintained.

The newly-purchased Komatsu PC 360LC is extremely efficient at keeping the artic trucks loaded and moving.

Grading, Drainage, Bridge Construction Under Way On I-440 NCDOT from page 40

Hinnant referenced 2012 volumes on I-440 ranging from 79,200 to 134,200 vehicles per day, with the highest traffic volumes along the segment just south of the I-40 interchange. By 2035, with no changes to the project corridor, traffic volumes are projected to increase 19-26 percent, to 96,400 to 169,600 vehicles per day. Lane Construction serves as the general contractor, which Hinnant praised for its local project knowledge, past working relationships and extensive design-build experience. For crews, the biggest overall challenges have involved significant utility relocations and right-of-way acquisition, which drive the phasing of the project. Tasks include grading; storm drainage; the building of noise walls and retaining walls; water and sewer; utility relocation; and bridge construction. Crews have already completed replacing the Melbourne Road bridge over I-440. The job site before work began was a four-lane divided highway. Preparation of the site involved clearing and grubbing the perimeter of the project and installation of erosion control measures. Specific work needed to lower the grade of Blue Ridge Road includes detouring the railroad; constructing a portion of the Hillsborough Street bridge; building the railroad bridge and Beryl Road bridge; and placing trains on the newly completed bridge. Crews must also complete

Hillsborough Street bridge and excavate material beneath the structures. Widening from four to six lanes calls for clearing, drainage, traffic control, grading and paving. There are a total of 14 bridges tied to the project. All existing bridges will be replaced, and the pavement structure will be rehabilitated. Eight bridges along the corridor will need to be demolished and rebuilt to facilitate the widening of I-440. Upgrading interchanges requires a multi-phased maintenance of traffic (MOT) approach, as well as the use of retaining walls to minimize right-of-way impacts. The new connector road will be built parallel to existing Blue Ridge Road, and the plan is to have the connector road open to traffic before starting construction of the Hillsborough Street bridge. Also, the current at-grade intersection with the railroad will be closed to vehicles and pedestrians during construction. Hinnant said, to date, the elements have not been a major issue. “Barring a tropical storm or hurricane, weather should not impact the project schedule. However, with several ramp closures, the opening may be delayed if weather does not cooperate.” To keep crews and drivers safe during construction, there is extensive use of positive protection and multi-haul operations occurring at night and during off-peak hours. A variety of heavy equipment is being used on the job, including Caterpillar D5 and D6 dozers; Caterpillar 138, 308 and 450 excavators; and a Link-Belt telescoping crane. The machinery is being used to create the infrastructure (structures and roadway) for the facility. Main materials include earth, concrete and asphalt. A total of 700 cu. yds. of excavation will be moved during construction, along with 500 cu. yds. of borrow and 1.2 million cu. yds. of fill material. The project is broken down into many phases, and movement of material is very limited in each phase. Due to the spacing of the existing interchanges coupled with maintenance of traffic requirements, there are many phases, with earthwork/structure components necessary at each step.

NCDOT, in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration, completed an environmental assessment of the proposed improvements to I-440 in 2017. A pre-construction open house took place in 2019. Project team members and representatives of the Lane Construction designbuild team were available to discuss the project and answer questions regarding the project. The current estimated completion date currently is late 2024 to early 2025. The goal is to have traffic in its final pattern in mid-2024.  CEG

About Minnesota Firefighters Foundation After receiving training on the Health Risk to Firefighters in 2016, a small group of individuals felt compelled to do more for their brothers and sisters in the fire service. The founding five members piled into a small room and knew at that time there needed to be more focus on the hidden health and cancer risk firefighters faced. In early 2017 The Minnesota Firefighters Foundation was formed, and its mission is simple: supporting firefighters and their families that have been affected by cancer and other health issues due to their involvement in the fire service. MNFFF’s primary campaign is HOODS 4 HEROES, which educates firefighters on how to protect themselves, along with giving them the tools and equipment to help mitigate the risk of cancer and other hidden health risks. The HOODS 4 HEROES campaign mission is to purchase particulate hoods for fire departments across Minnesota that cannot afford them. Kenworth’s C500 Available With Bendix ESP System Kenworth recently announced that the Bendix ESP Electronic Stability Program is now available as an option for the Kenworth C500. The Kenworth C500 is Kenworth’s largest workhorse truck with a GCWR up to 500,000 pounds. It can be used for a variety of tough off-road and heavy-haul applications. The Bendix stability system for the Kenworth C500 comes with the Bendix 6S/6M configuration, which has six sensors and six modulators, and includes Bendix Smart ATC Automatic Traction Control and Bendix ESP. The Bendix technology is designed to help stabilize the vehicle during loss of control situations on dry, wet, snow and ice-covered roadways. In addition to using sensors that monitor lateral acceleration, as found on some roll-only systems, the Bendix ESP full-stability system also uses sensors to monitor steering angle and vehicle direction. This allows for detection of a vehicle’s impending loss of stability and automatic intervention through de-throttling of the engine and selective application of tractor steer and drive axle brakes, along with trailer brakes, helping the driver to maintain control of the vehicle in a variety of situations. Bendix noted that its safety technologies complement safe driving practices and are not intended to enable or encourage aggressive driving. No commercial vehicle safety technology replaces a skilled, alert driver exercising safe driving techniques and proactive, comprehensive driver training. Responsibility for the safe operation of the vehicle remains with the driver at all times. The Bendix stability system for the Kenworth C500 comes with the Bendix 6S/6M configuration, which has six sensors and six modulators, and includes Bendix Smart ATC Automatic Traction Control and Bendix ESP. Ritchie to Buy SmartEquip for $175M Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers and SmartEquip announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement under which Ritchie Bros. will acquire SmartEquip for approximately $175 million. Completion of the acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions, including, among other conditions, the expiration or termination of the applicable waiting period under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act of 1976, as amended. “This acquisition furthers our goal of providing the best experience for our customers as we continue our transition from a traditional auctioneer to a marketplace for insights, services, and transaction solutions for commercial assets,” said Ann Fandozzi, chief executive officer, Ritchie Bros. “SmartEquip will enable us to offer asset-specific, fulllifecycle parts and service support on behalf of our dealer and OEM partners to our buyers.” SmartEquip is a multi-manufacturer platform that provides customers with real-time service and diagnostic support, dynamically customized, via serial number, to each asset in their fleet, as well as enabling the electronic procurement of parts from OEMs and their dealers. The company supports approximately $1 billion in annual transaction volume with more than 600 OEM brands, on behalf of fleet locations across North America, Europe, and the Asia Pacific. SmartEquip has 60 employees and will continue to operate as a standalone business and maintain its physical presence in Norwalk, Conn., for the foreseeable future.

“Ritchie Bros. is a perfect partner for us, with over 60 years of experience and a global footprint,” said Bryan Rich, SmartEquip’s executive chairman. “Through their global customer base, this merger will accelerate SmartEquip’s ability to support its rapidly growing footprint across our joint global marketplaces and engaged customer base. At closing, the existing SmartEquip team, including all senior management, will transition over and participate in the next growth stage of the SmartEquip network.” Under the terms of the transaction, Ritchie Bros. will acquire 100 percent of the equity of SmartEquip for approximately $175 million subject to adjustment. Strategic Rationale for Acquisition • Enables Better Customer and Partner Experience — the combination of SmartEquip and Ritchie Bros. will enable and accelerate adoption of parts and service sales on behalf of our dealer and OEM partners by providing a seamless experience for end users • Accelerates the Execution of our Strategy — This highly complementary acquisition builds on Ritchie Bros.’ vision of becoming a trusted global marketplace for insights, services and transaction solutions for commercial assets • Deepens IMS Connectivity — SmartEquip will deepen IMS (inventory management system) connectivity and will further enable digital solutions at scale around inspections and ancillary services, while enabling better optimization of search and advertising revenue streams For more information, visit RitchieBros.com. 

RING POWER

Some in the construction sector say the biggest culprits in industry volatility are coronavirus lockdowns and restrictions, business closures, higher-than-expected demand and a reduction of workforce in the industries that produce and distribute needed materials. CHALLENGES from page 34

it may be as simple as the parties recognizing potential volatility and negotiate a mutually acceptable price escalation clause.” This approach, they said, should include identifying specific materials or material categories that may be at risk for significant volatility. “If possible, identifying suppliers for these ‘atrisk’ materials that will provide fixed pricing for a fixed period of time.” Define volatile pricing, suggested Pebworth and Stack in an article for JD Supra, and pre-order materials when it’s feasible. Account for storage costs, or course. Anticipate the potential impact for future projects under current conditions. Their other suggestions: Discuss use of a contingency line item for raw materials and consider bailateral flexibility. “If the owner shares the risk of price increases, then the owner should also share the benefit if prices come down unexpectedly,” they said. “Unanticipated material delivery delays and product shortages will require similar flexibility. A shortage of material transportation resources may be a long-lasting outcome in the postpandemic construction economy.” At negotiation time, owners, contractors, subcontractors and suppliers need to consider all these issues in the wake of COVID-19 and other unanticipated events that have occurred over the past year, said the attorneys. Price volatility and related delivery delays of construction materials will likely

remain for the foreseeable future. “As with many issues, open and honest communication during contract negotiations surrounding issues that may arise on a project not only fosters a good working relationship, it can also avoid unnecessary costs, delays and disputes on the back end of a project,” they added. Reframing Outcome AGC reported that another round of price increases and supply-chain disruptions have resulted in further hardships on contractors. They’re not only driving up construction costs, but slowing down progress on projects. Additionally, more than threefourths of construction firms have indicated projects are being postponed or canceled because of unavailable materials or cost overruns, while only one out of five firms reported winning new work in the previous two months. Circumstances like these are catalysts for unfavorable outcomes in the construction industry, said Collin of Firmo Construction. As a result, many local general contractors are proposing project bids with higher estimates. The general conclusion is that contractors are trying to balance out losses due to the pandemic, leading to a hike in cost. “In actuality, however, it’s quite the opposite,” he said. “Contractors are trying to balance the surge in need for construction services while accounting for the matter of not only rising material costs and material delays, but also

labor shortages in the industry.” Reimagining supply chains could be a way to build resilience and head off disruptions, said Collin. He laid out solutions contractors can implement to diminish the negative effects of the industry’s perfect storm. “Some ways contractors can address these obstacles include introducing innovative methodologies and expanding their thinking beyond the construction site,” he said. One technique he favors is prefabrication. The strategy utilizes components made off site and assembles them together on site. It can be applied to full structures as in modular construction, or to materials such as cross-laminated timber. Collin pointed out that at a time when cost is critical, reimagining supply chains is another viable solution. “One way is to prepare for disruptions. Now is the perfect time for companies to build resilience into their operations to be better prepared for any type of future disruption,” he said. “There’s an ideal opportunity to build that resilience on multiple fronts if industry leaders are restructuring their value chain from end to end,” he added. These opportunities range from reevaluating business models and building efficient industrial supply chains, to building manufacturing and distribution facilities to help alleviate vulnerabilities the pandemic brought to light in the just-in-time supply chain, he said.  CEG

Alex Lyon Hosts Auction at New Bushnell, Fla., Location

B

efore kicking off the Sept. 14 Florida auction by welcoming the crowd to the “unofficial mini grand opening” of his new Bushnell, Fla., location, Jack Lyon spoke with CEG about this new location. “Bushnell is still in the greater Orlando area and was a good choice. Anywhere near the old location, the growth and development is getting so big, we would have probably only been allowed to be there for another year or so. We want a long-term place to be. “We were at the previous location for 27 years and hopefully this will be the spot where we’ll be for the rest of our careers.” According to Lyon, they looked at quite a few places, and ran into zoning issues several times. “The building and growth in Orange County is just absolutely unbelievable, with more-and-more construction projects going up every day. We loved our old site, but everyone could see that the houses, structures and new roads were building up right next to the previous sale site property and was eventually going to take over. The Bushnell property is perfect for the duration.” The new sale site sits next to I-75 with plenty of interstate frontage and is right below the intersection of I-75 and the Florida Turnpike. It’s a short 25minute drive to Ocala, and still convenient to Orlando and all points NorthSouth-East-West, according to Lyon, who added: “The only thing we’re missing is Charley’s restaurant.”  CEG (All photographs in this article are Copyright 2021 Construction Equipment Guide. All smiles at his new Bushnell, Fla., location, Jack Lyon was ready to get the inaugural sale under way. Alan Moyer (L) and Matt Mortellaro, both of Moyer Trucks & Equipment of Seffner, Fla., were spotted looking over a Kobelco SK350 of interest.

The one-and-only Juan Carlos Gonzalez Muller, general director of Alex Lyon & Son Co. de Mexico, was at the sale and taking bids from his regular customers and other onsite bidders.

Doing some machine inspections on loaders of interest (L-R) are James Stennett, Eddie Milam and Caleb Milam, all of Milam’s Equipment Sales, Sutherlin, Va.

Madison King (L), an independent contractor based in Wildwood, Fla., and Jamie Clevinger, of HMK Hauling, Wildwood, Fla., look over information in the auction catalogue before machine inspections.

Flying in from Puerto Rico to see what kind of equipment deals they could find are Michael Perez (L) and Hosea Hernandez, both of ALPUR, based in Humacao, PR.

Terry North of RDO Equipment came to the auction to monitor the pricing and check out some of the Deere machines, including this 750K dozer.

Test operating a Cat D6K2 LGP before it went on the auction block is regular Alex Lyon auction attendee Richard Wojtkowski of Pittsfield Lawn and Tractor, Pittsfield, Mass.

Deanco Winds Down Busy Year With Philadelphia, Miss., Sale

W Opening up this Ingersoll Rand DD24 compactor for a careful inspection are paving contractors Randy Barnes (L) and David Weeks, both of Barnes Construction, Belzoni, Miss.

inding down a busy 2021 auction schedule, Deanco Auction held a sale at its Philadelphia, Miss., location on Sept. 15. A terrific turnout of onsite registered bidders and a very robust online presence made for another successful Deanco sale. Next up on the Deanco schedule is a construction equipment and truck sale at the company’s Headland, Ala., location.  CEG (All photographs in this article are Copyright 2021 Construction Equipment Guide. All Rights Reserved.) Looking to snag some bargain machines to ship up to Illinois are Brett Gentry (L), Rick’s Auto Sales, Metropolis, Ill., and Brian Steele, W&W Truck & Trailer Sales, Carmi, Ill.

Dodging a few rain drops to look over and test operate some of the machines in the auction line-up are the husband and wife team of Timothy and Jessie Martin, owners of JT Martin Enterprises, Ocean Springs, Miss.

The Deanco Philadelphia, Miss., auction was once again stacked deep with a nice selection of truck tractors, dump trucks and specialty trucks.

Registered bidders turned out early to inspect and discuss machines with their industry peers before settling into their seats in the auction arena.

Joey Cain of Lynn Cain LLC, based in McCrory, Ark., is logging some notes about several excavators of interest.

Test operating some of the Cat mini-excavators about to go on the auction block are Chuck Zdenek (L), Zdenek Properties, and Bill Davis, Davis Construction, both located in Quitman, Miss.

Putting a Deere 130G excavator through the paces before putting it on his bidding list is Jeordie Mason of JEM Contracting LLC, Macon, Miss. Charity runs deep in the south. A regular consignor at the Deanco sales dropped off this Dodge RAM 2500 heavy-duty and said “auction it off and donate the entire amount to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.”

Joey Martin Auctioneers Holds October Auction in Georgia

I

f it’s a damp October Saturday in Blairsville, Ga., you know it’s about auction time for Joey Martin Auctioneers. As the morning fog of Oct. 9 dissipated, a crowd converged on the sale site, making for a huge turnout of onsite registered bidders and what was expected to be a near record number of online bidders. A nice line-up of dozers, excavators, mini/compact equipment, trucks, trailers, farm equipment and more made for a super-successful sale.  CEG

(All photographs in this article are Copyright 2021 Construction Equipment Guide. All Rights Reserved.) Deep in thought and reading up on some compact track loaders that he plans to bid on is Danny Anderson, owner of North Georgia Grading & Bobcat Services, based in Cleveland, Ga. Putting a Cat 120G motor grader through the paces is Joe Howell, of J Howell Construction in Evans, Ga.

The 4-wheeler guys took full advantage of the unusually wet October in Blairsville.

Ryan Hunter (L) and Truett Nichelson, equipment enthusiasts based in Atlanta, Ga., are looking to possibly snag a weekend auction bargain, maybe on this Cat 320CL excavator. Even before bidding began on the miscellaneous items, a massive crowd congregated to snag some great deals on a wide variety of tools, lawn care and turf machines.

Wrapping up an inspection of a Komatsu PC220LC is Lonnie Underwood of Underwood Contracting Inc., Robbinsville, N.C.

Joey Martin Auctioneers always brings a nice selection of hydraulic excavators to any of its regular sale site auctions.

Grady Smith (L) of Martin Construction & Grading, Toccoa, Ga., and Roy Shore, a North Carolina contractor, tag-team machine inspections on some compact track loaders of common interest.

Giving a good “once over” in their inspection of a Cat 953D crawler loader are TJ Jones (L) of Bar J Farms, Talking Rock, Ga., and Ben Weatherby, independent contractor, based in Canton, Ga.
