Nashville Sees $750M Capitol View Project By Cindy Riley
Construction teams in Nashville, Tenn., are working on the latest phase of a roughly $750 million, 32acre mixed-use project that will feature offices, retail shops, restaurants, upscale multi-family residential units, hotels and a 2.5 acre urban activity park when complete. Capitol View, a walkable urban district, will offer immediate access to downtown Nashville, The Gulch, Vanderbilt University, Sulphur Dell Baseball Stadium, Germantown, New Salem and East Nashville. “The biggest challenge with this, or any project of this magnitude, is coordination,” said Austin Webb, project manager of Hoar Construction, which is currently building Capitol View’s Block D and also will construct Block E. “We will contract with over 60 separate subcontractors and vendors before this building is complete, and each one is interacting with the others. Each of our trade partners relies on Hoar to ensure their work can be installed correctly and in a timely manner. We have worked with selected subcontractors for over two years to ensure the project is well organized and scope gaps are minimized.” Hoar began its pursuit of the project in 2013. “After running through several different design iterations, the current general schematic was developed. Hoar worked closely with all of the ownership partners to help influence a project that captured the design, but was also feasible within the time and budget constraints required,” said Webb.

$77M Stripped From State Construction Budget By Melinda Deslatte
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) Gov. John Bel Edwards stripped $77 million in proposed projects from Louisiana’s state construction budget, saying the state can’t afford all the items lawmakers packed into the bill. Edwards used his line-item veto authority to remove 36 projects around the state from the $3.8 billion, multiyear construction budget passed in the final hours of a special legislative session that ended in June. The veto message was posted on the Legislature’s website June 30. The state is limited in how much money it can borrow through bond sales annually, and the construction budget is stuffed with more projects than Louisiana can afford, meaning the projects will be in the pipeline for years and ASSOCIATED PRESS
some may never get financing. Edwards said lawmakers added $115 million in additional items in line for construction borrowing above what his administration proposed, worsening the gap between the dollars available and the road projects, building repairs and other items jockeying to receive financing. “In an effort to establish realistic expectations given the state’s limited bond capacity, I have vetoed items from this bill totaling [$77M],’’ Edwards wrote in his veto letter. However, even with the governor’s vetoes, the state still won’t be able to advance all the remaining projects in the budget bill. The Edwards’ administration will choose which ones are advanced to the State Bond Commission for financing in the budget year that began July 1. Projects struck from the bill include millions
of dollars in roadwork and drainage improvements proposed for Ascension, Caldwell, Jefferson, Iberia, Lafayette, Livingston, Ouachita, Vermilion, Vernon and Winn parishes. More than $12 million proposed for a neighborhood clinic and urgent care center in Baton Rouge was removed. A levee upgrade in St. Tammany Parish, sewer system improvements in Acadia Parish and a police and fire building in Livingston Parish were stripped, along with dollars for a boat launch in St. Landry Parish and a municipal complex in St. Martin Parish. A golf course development in Calcasieu Parish won’t be getting $2.1 million from the state, and a Rapides Parish industrial park will no longer be in line for $10.8 million in state financing. Bellamy Tackles Medium-Sized Jobs With Heavy Equipment James Bellamy got started in the business in the late 90s when he got a job selling asphalt in Crab Orchard, Tenn. A position at Tennessee Asphalt Company’s grading division followed in 2000, and by 2005 he was starting his own business: Bellamy Excavating. Bellamy, who has a civil engineering and surveying background, preferred the maintenance side of the field over the design side. Starting his own business was always “in the back of his mind,” he said, but the driving force to move forward came from an afternoon riding four-wheelers with a friend. “I happened to sell a couple jobs while we were out riding fourwheelers and we started joking about ‘I wish I’d invest in you and just live off you for the rest of my life’ or something of that nature.” The next day that friend proposed the idea of Bellamy doing a business plan with him as a partner. Kirk and Louis Schaad are both 25 percent owners of the business; Bellamy is the majority owner at 50 percent. One of Bellamy Excavating’s first projects was a small office building off Dutch Valley Road in Knoxville, Tenn. The company mainly tackles medium-sized jobs, including Dollar General stores, O’Reilly’s, retail sites, fast food restaurants and office buildings. “We try to do medium-sized

construction, basically in and out to get done in two, three or four weeks and then move on to the next one,” Bellamy said. “When I was at Tennessee Asphalt Company, I was trained by a gentleman named David Ammons who had his own construction company here in Knoxville for years. Bill Ratliff, who was the president of Tennessee Asphalt Company, hired him to come in and teach me how to estimate grade work. One thing
The Komatsu D51 EX dozer is being used on a variety of projects.
that he kept telling me is if you stay in this medium-sized area you won’t have to worry about having a beast that is too much to feed. And, so, I have always tried to follow that advice, and I still try to stay in that medium-sized area whereas I don’t have a beast that I can’t control.” A Long Working Relationship Bellamy first worked with Power Equipment when he was
employed at Tennessee Asphalt Company. He remembered the relationship when he started his own company. “From the beginning, they jumped in and the service they gave to me from the start is the same that they would give to anybody with a bigger size company. If I needed something, they were out there and within an hour if they could not fix it, they would bring another machine out for me while they were working on mine. The

down time was very minimal and they treated me with great respect, despite me being a smaller company in the grading business.” All of Bellamy Excavating’s equipment is paid for, allowing the company to keep its bills low and move forward even in tough economic times. Its first purchase from Power Equipment was a Komatsu D37 dozer, a Komatsu PC200 excavator and an Ingersoll Rand SD77 sheeps-foot roller. Most recently, Bellamy purchased a new Hamm H11I roller and a Komatsu D51 EX dozer. The dozer is being used to build a pad in Farragut, pushing fill on a 2-acre site for an eye doctor’s office. “It’s about a two-acre site with fills … about 14,000 yards of import [and approximately] 14 or 15 foot of fill,” Bellamy said. The import is being dug out with the PC200 and transported to the job site in dump trucks. Once on site, the dozer will push it down for the specified lift and then the Hamm will compact it to specified compaction, Bellamy said. The Komatsu D51 EX Bellamy Excavating purchased was the very first 2017 D51, according to Bellamy. “Last year we tried to purchase a D51 dozer and we couldn’t purchase the dozer, only smaller sizes. We don’t run GPS on our equipment, so the problem we had was the 51 that we could get from see BELLAMY page 42

RedStone Uses Slide Rail System to Install Wet Well By James McRay SPECIAL TO CEG
Recently, contractor RedStone Construction Group was low-bidder to install a sanitary sewer wet well for North Little Rock (Arkansas) Wastewater. The 25 ft. tall, 8 ft. diameter fiberglass wet well was installed along 10th Street in North Little Rock. The installation of a pre-cast structure with sewer tie-in was really nothing new for RedStone. However, the depth of the excavation and its proximity to the Arkansas River presented a new wrinkle for the veteran underground utility crew. Plus, the excavation site was packed into a very small working area. “We only had about a 25 foot radius of space around where the wet-well was going to go, so we didn’t have any room for sloping or benching,” said Kurt Cosse, RedStone’s project supervisor. “We knew we needed some type of nontraditional shoring system that would allow us to minimize the impact of the excavation area,” he said. Contractor Calls on Little Rock’s Riggs CAT for Shoring Equipment RedStone turned to local heavy equipment dealer Riggs CAT for possible solutions to its unique shoring challenge. “RedStone came to us and we looked at their project
“When I arrived out on the Red Stone job site I was very impressed from the get-go,” said Riggs CAT’s Josh Clark. “Everything was neat and organized, all the Slide Rail components were set out ready to install.”
parameters and saw that they had a really tight confined area that they were going to put the lift station in,” said Josh Clark, Riggs’ rental operations coordinator. “So they asked us, what options do you have for shoring and we were able to show them an Efficiency Production slide rail system.” “We’ve worked with Riggs pretty much since we’ve been in business, they’ve always been there for us,” said Cosse. “Just recently, Riggs has got into the trench safety rental business and they happened to have this shoring system that we needed and everything kind of fell into place from there. It’s just a good match.” Efficiency Production Slide Rail System Makes Debut in Arkansas Efficiency Production’s universal slide rail system is a component shoring system comprised of steel panels — similar to trench shield sidewalls — and vertical steel posts. When installed, the versatile system creates a safe, obstruction-free shored excavation, according to the manufacturer. “From the get-go, all the parts were right and what we needed,” Cosse said. “On previous jobs we’ve had problems with shoring material not being the correct one, or not showing up at all. But from day one when we got the slide rail system, everything came that was required to install it.”
“We only had about a 25 ft. radius of space around where the wet-well was going to go, so we didn’t have any room for sloping or benching,” said RedStone’s Kurt Cosse. “Riggs happened to have a Slide Rail System that we needed and everything kind of fell into place.”

Plans Under Way for $59.2M Housing Development in Charleston, S.C. Holliday Fenoglio Fowler L.P. (HFF) announced that it has arranged equity and construction financing for the development of 511 Meeting, a seven-story, 221-unit multi-housing community in Charleston, S.C. HFF worked on behalf of Spandrel Development Partners to arrange a general partnership with Origin Investments and Aspen Heights. Subsequently, on behalf of the newly created partnership, HFF secured $59.2 million in construction/permanent financing and limited partner equity through Northwestern Mutual. Due for completion in 2019, 511 Meeting will be situated on 1.6 acres in Charleston’s Upper King Street district, which was ranked by U.S. News and World Report as one of the 10 Best Shopping Streets in the United States. The property will consist of a blend of conventional and workforce housing units along with 2,000 sq. ft. of groundfloor retail. Unit layouts will include studio, one- and twobedroom units ranging from 520 to 1,050 sq. ft. each. The podium-style building will feature two levels of parking at its base topped with four floors of housing on the east side of the building and six floors of housing on the west side. Community amenities will include a resort-style swimming pool and relaxation lounge in the courtyard as well as work space and multi-functional rooms. The HFF team representing the developer was led by managing director Gregg Shapiro, director Megan
Thompson and senior managing director Jason Nettles. “After assembling a general partnership comprising a topnotch entitlement, development and construction team, we were extremely pleased that Northwestern Mutual came in to provide both the construction financing and limited partner equity to complete this exciting project on the extremely difficult to develop Charleston peninsula,” Shapiro said. Construction Spending Holds Steady From April to May Construction spending in May was unchanged from April but increased from a year ago amid growing reports that contractors are struggling to find enough skilled workers to keep projects on schedule, according to an analysis of new government data by the Associated General Contractors of America. Association officials said a mixture of worker shortages and political gridlock appears to be holding back construction sector growth. “Spending on most types of private construction has remained relatively flat from month to month so far in 2017 but at a higher level than in the same period of 2016,” said Ken Simonson, the association’s chief economist. “By contrast, public investment in infrastructure has generally declined from last year’s levels despite a pickup from April to May. At this point in the year, it looks as if private demand for structures remains healthy, but gridlock in Congress and in several state governments will depress public infrastructure spending.” Construction spending in May totaled $1.230 trillion at a seasonally adjusted annual rate, unchanged from the upwardly
revised April total, Simonson said. He added that the year-to-date increase of 6.1 percent for January through May 2017, compared with the same months of 2016, shows over-
find enough qualified workers. Private nonresidential spending slipped 0.7 percent for the month but grew 5.3 percent year-to-date. The largest private nonresidential segment in May was power construction (including oil and gas field and pipeline projects), which edged up 0.3 percent for the month and 3.4 percent year-to-date. The next-largest segment, commercial (retail, warehouse and farm) construction, decreased 1.0 percent in May but climbed 15.2 percent yearto-date. Manufacturing construction declined 1.7 percent for the month and 7.8 percent year-to-date. Private office construction increased by 0.8 percent for the month and 16.9 percent year-to-date. Ken Simonson Private residential construction Associated General Contractors of America spending slipped by 0.6 percent between April and May 2017 but gained 12.4 percent year-to-date. percent from the prior month but declined by 3.5 percent for the first five months of 2017 combined. The biggest public segment — highway and street construction — dipped 0.9 percent for the month and 1.3 percent year-to-date. Among other major public infrastructure categories, spending on transportation facilities such as transit and airport construction inched down 0.2 percent yearto-date; spending on sewage and waste disposal plummeted 21.5 percent; and spending on water supply fell 11.0 percent. Association officials urged Washington officials to act on new measures to support workforce development — such as passing new legislation to support career and technical education — and to find a way to pay for needed investments in aging public infrastructure. “Washington officials must enact measures to support career and technical education and to get our aging roads, bridges and water systems back to a state of good repair,” said Stephen E. Sandherr, the association’s chief executive officer. For more information, visit www.agc.org/. Thompson Tractor Names New Veep of Earthmoving Sales On June 15, Thompson Tractor Co. Inc., Birmingham, Ala., selected Charles B. “Charlie” Stevens as the new vice president of earthmoving sales, which includes Thompson Tractor’s Cat Rental Store Division. Stevens joined Thompson Tractor in 1989 as a sales trainee. He served later as an earthmoving sales representative, and, since 2007, Stevens has been the region manager for the western sales region. In his new role, Stevens will be responsible for earthmoving equipment sales and for the Thompson Rental Store in its entirety — sales, rentals, parts and service. This encompasses the entire footprint of Thompson’s territory in Alabama and northwest Florida. Stevens said that Thompson Tractor is constantly looking for new ways to serve its current customers as well as finding new customers that would benefit from having a business relationship with Thompson Tractor. “There is no substitute for being there in person, but in today’s world — where customers are looking for alternative sources of information — we feel that reaching out to them in the way that they want to be communicated with is an important part of our future,” said Stevens. “To that end, I am cer-
tain that social media and inside sales reps will play a bigger role in how we do things.” Thompson Tractor recently added Screen Machine and IROCK crushing and screening equipment, and is currently looking for additional product lines to round out its offerings. Stevens said this should open up new opportunities to broaden and deepen the company’s customer relationships. “Charlie has lengthy experience in dealing with customers, employees and suppliers,” said Mike Rooney, executive vice president and general manager. “He is well-suited for this position.” “This year, Thompson Tractor celebrates 60 years of being in business,” said Stevens. “That is 60 years of doing business the right way while taking care of its customers and employees as well as supporting the community. Being chosen by the Thompson family for this position is a tremendous honor, and I am grateful for it and humbled by it.” For more information, visit www.thompsontractor.com. Two new pallet forks (PF45 and PF60) are optimized to work with John Deere G-Series skid steers as well as G- and E-Series compact track loaders (CTLs), along with another pallet fork that was specifically designed for use on K-Series compact wheel loaders with the skid steer-style Quik-Tatch coupler. All new pallet forks also are compatible with most competitive models. “Our new severe-duty pallet forks offer improved visibility, increased capacity and better durability than the previous fork-frame design,” said Gregg Zupancic, product marketing manager, John
Deere Construction & Forestry. “Together with our standard- and heavy-duty options, we offer a material-handling solution to fit every customer’s need.” The severe-duty pallet forks for skid steers and CTLs are available in lengths of 48 and 60 in. Rockland Clean-Up Grapple Turns Loader Into Debris-Removal Machine
Rockland’s clean-up grapple features two independent hydraulic clamps that surround and pick up material rather than pushing material around.
Rockland’s new clean-up grapple is designed to turn a loader into a more efficient debris-removal machine. The clean-up grapple functions like a claw — allowing operators to scoop and load leaves, garden waste, manure, wood chips, and other debris with ease, according to the manufacturer. Rockland’s clean-up grapple features two independent hydraulic clamps that surround and pick up material rather than pushing material around, making clean up fast and easy. When handling large loads, loss during
movement is eliminated by the 2 ft. (.6 m) vertical extension option. Built from high-strength alloy steel, the grapple is wear and abrasion-resistant, even with frequent contact on asphalt and other hard surfaces. All Rockland clean-up grapples feature heat-treated, reversible, bolt-on cutting edges for years of dependable service. Extreme duty versions and customization for severe and unique applications are available. Rockland clean-up grapples mount in place of the standard loader bucket
using factory pins or coupler brackets. All Rockland clean-up grapples are covered by Rockland’s no-nonsense guarantee for a period of one year or 2,000 hours. Rockland designs and manufactures more than 170 construction attachments for excavators, loaders, dozers, graders and haul trucks. For more information, call 800/4583773 or visit www.rocklandmfg.com.

Mammoet Announces Introduction of Dynamic Stability Mammoet announced the introduction of dynamic stability, a method for calculating the dynamic stability of hydraulic trailers. This method provides clients with a detailed assessment of the safety level of their project before it commences. The assessment deals with more relevant parameters than customary in the industry up till now. It therefore allows hydraulic transport projects to be executed more safely, according to the company. In some cases, dynamic stability also will contribute towards more efficient ways of using hydraulic trailers. Dynamic stability was developed in-house and has been verified and approved by classification society DNV. Mammoet will be using dynamic stability for all hydraulic transport projects from now on. Static Rules of Thumb “When you move a load using hydraulic trailers, you have to ensure two things: that the load is stable and does not tip over, and that the trailers carrying the load are strong enough to carry the load,” said Ludo Mous, director operations at Mammoet Europe. “Up until now Mammoet has always followed the industry standard for ensuring enough strength and stability. This standard is based on two rules of thumb: the 7- degree rule and the 2-degree rule. These rules stipulate that the center of gravity of the load needs to stay within a seven degree tipping limit and that it can tilt up to two degrees before a hydraulic group is overloaded.” Safer and More Efficient These rules have always allowed the industry to do its work safely. However, when they were implemented almost

Transport with hydraulic trailers.
40 years ago, they were based on static trailers. Since then, loads have significantly increased in size and weight. At the same time the axle load capacity of trailers has increased, making margins smaller and exact calculations more relevant. With this in mind, Mammoet concluded that it is time to reassess industry standards and develop a verified calcu-
lation method that incorporates the effects of multiple dynamic forces such as the acceleration and deceleration of the trailer, the forces exerted by the wind, the slope and camber of the road, and the surface on which the load is transported. Detailed Information “This means we thoroughly engineer what a trailer can and cannot do in each specific situation,” said Senior Engineer Jurjen de Vries, who was part of the team that developed dynamic stability. “Instead of giving a yes or no answer to the question ‘Are we within the allowable limit?’ we can provide clients, operators and other stakeholders with detailed information on the strength and stability margins for each individual transport project in a single, easy to understand graph.” All in all, dynamic stability can ensure a higher level of safety and provide clients with more detailed safety information for their projects. In some cases, it helps the user to come up with more efficient transport approaches as well, according to the company. Mammoet will be enhancing and expanding the dynamic stability method in the upcoming years. For more information, visit Mammoet.com. Myhre, Wald Earn CWI Certifications In early April of this year, Ben Myhre, a welding trainer of Felling’s Weld Training Center and Kyle Wald, the V.P. of Engineering of Felling Trailers Inc., obtained their certified welding inspector certifications through the American Welding Society. Myhre will utilize his CWI certification to provide a higher level of training for his welding students he teaches at Felling’s Weld Training Center. For Wald, the knowledge gained from the CWI certification will play an intricate part in engineering Felling's extensive model offerings. The pair also will work together to create a set of Felling Trailers Certified Weld standards that will be implemented throughout the company. “Our long-term goal is to become an AWS Certified shop,” said Wald. AWS is the worldwide leader in certification programs for the welding industry. Since the CWI (certified welding inspectors) program inception in 1976, AWS has certified 97,000+ welding inspectors alone, plus thousands of more working professionals across other certification categories. AWS requires a minimum score of 72 percent in each of the three sections of the Ben Myhre (L), a welding traintest: Part A, a two- er, and Kyle Wald, V.P. of hour, 150-question, Engineering. obtained their cerclosed-book test on tified welding inspector certififundamentals; Part B, cations through the American a two-hour, hands-on Welding Society. test of 46 questions that requires the test-taker to use visual inspection tools and a sample code book; and Part C, a two-hour, open-book test of 40-60 questions that calls for finding the right code in the right code book. If the test-taker fails any part of the exam, he has to wait a year and also take 40 hours of additional professional training before retaking the exam. Myhre and Wald completed approximately 80 hours of online training covering subjects such as Fabrication Math I, Fabrication Math II, Metallurgy I: Fundamentals Safety in Welding, Science of Non-Destructive Testing, Understanding Welding Symbols and Welding Fundamentals. Following this, the two then completed an additional 40-hour certified welding inspector seminar that took place at a testing/training center in Bloomington, Minn. “There was a lot crammed into one week. We were up studying until 10:30-11 p.m. every night because we wanted to make sure we knew our codes and facts,” said Myhre. “I’ve taken a lot of tests in my career, and this test was pretty intense, very encompassing,” said Wald. “Having certified welding inspectors on our team demonstrates Felling Trailers’ commitment to its quality standard and customer satisfaction. Ben and Kyle’s accomplishments took much effort, and all of us at Felling Trailers Inc. commend them on their achievement,” said Brenda Jennissen, CEO of Felling Trailers Inc. Terex Utilities’ Service School Tackles Technical Topics More than 65 mechanics and service technicians from 20 U.S. and Canadian utilities and co-ops participated in Terex Utilities’ annual service school in June. Also participating were a Terex rental partner and distributor. Instruction covered technical topics, including boom and rotation hydraulic overload protection, dielectric testing, hydraulic leveling, side load protection, controls and more. During the three-day event in Watertown, S.D., participants rotated through a series of stations that incorporate Terex utility equipment and training aids to educate attendees on the most current maintenance, troubleshooting and repair procedures for the company’s digger derricks and aerial devices. “This in-depth training gives customers the skills and confidence to perform necessary maintenance to keep their Terex equipment operating safely and at peak performance,” said Jason Julius, technical support and training of Terex Utilities. Approximately 75 percent of the participants were first-time attendees. For this reason, Terex keeps group size small. “Mechanics and technicians are able to get one-on-one instruction, forging personal relationships with our trainers,” said Julius.

GSE Demos Vacall AJV Recycler for Florida Municipality
Jared Wilson (R), environmental specialist, Great Southern Equipment Company, discusses the automatic continuous filter system.
The Vacall All Jet Vac (AJV) 1215.
On June 21 representatives of Great Southern Equipment Company (GSE), including Jared Wilson, environmental specialist, and Tommy Marks, vice president of sales (Orlando), met with city of Edgewater, Fla., municipal workers to demonstrate the features and benefits of a Vacall All Jet Vac (AJV). Later, the group put the machine to the test, cleaning a storm drain in the city of Edgewater. Features of the Vacall Recycler, including asymmetrical shaped debris tank, enable it to hold more debris and to help avoid a rollover accident. Another unique feature of the Vacall Recycler is that it can be used as a recycler truck or a vacuum truck. The Vacall Recycler also includes a lifetime warranty on the debris tank and water tanks. The Vacall Recycler also saves downtime, eliminating the need to refill water tanks and trips to the dump station, which saves hours on site. The recycler also saves thousands of gallons of water. To put this in perspective, one Vacall AJV combination sewer cleaning truck can save an average of 5.7 million gal-
Jared Wilson (L), environmental specialist, Great Southern Equipment Company, and Tommy Marks, vice president of sales of Great Southern Equipment Company prepare the Vacall Recycler for the demonstration.
Features and Benefits of the Vacall Recycler: • Automatic continuous filtering • No filter change • No back flushing after typical cleanout work • No need for city water • No need to stop work and drive to refill water tank
• Lower truck fuel consumption with less truck weight • Minimal overall maintenance • Low energy consumption • High throughput rate • Separate 240-gallon tank and pump for wash down
lons of city water each year when it’s equipped with a recycler continuous water recycling system, which typically requires no city water at all. The water savings calculation is based on typical municipality usage statistics, using 80 gallons of water per minute, six hours per day and 40 weeks a year. Individual city water savings may vary, based on jetting activity. Additionally, the recycler system vacuums water from sewer lines, puts it through a five-step filtering process and then uses the same water to continue jetting. Located in the front of the debris tank for protection against stones and other vehicles, the recycler system also includes a 240-gallon segregated clean water tank section attached to a 10 gpm pump and 50 ft. hose reel for wash down. Thompson Tractor Adds IROCK, Screen Machine Industries
The full line of IROCK machines are now available at all Thompson Tractor locations in Alabama and the Florida panhandle.
Screen Machine Industries machines line the equipment yard at the Birmingham, Ala., company headquarters.
On June 1, Thompson Tractor officially became an IROCK and Screen Machine Industries dealer of the entire state of Alabama and the panhandle of Florida. In order to facilitate this product line expansion, the company hired a materials industry expert, made a substantial initial investment in units for sale or rental and parts, and is actively engaged with both of the manufacturers for product and service training. Bill Warr, Thompson Tractor regional manager who has been with the company for more than 41 years, was one of the catalysts for obtaining these new lines and felt the timing for this move was right. Warr, who started with the company in product support and sales and has been a region manager for more than 20 years at the Birmingham headquarters, oversees the aggregates and coal product lines for the company “We’ve looked at getting into this business for several years and decided that these lines would complement a lot of the industries we already serve, such as construction, aggregate, recycling, coal and others. In doing so, we looked to hire a specialist in this market segment,” said Warr. Thompson Tractor hired Jim Bailey, who had been with Vulcan Materials for more 46 years, as its new crushing and screening specialist. Bailey will be working throughout the state of Alabama and in the panhandle of Florida with all of the company’s sales staff and already has ridden with many of Thompson’s representatives and has visited multiple sites from Huntsville all the way down to the Gulf Coast in various crushing and screening applications. “At Thompson Tractor, we’re always looking for additional lines to complement our Caterpillar line. We feel that our marketplace provides good opportunities for retail sales, as well as rental potential for crushing
Bailey said: “From an experience standpoint, the majority of my working career was with Vulcan Materials Company, the nation’s largest aggregate producer. I began as an engineer in Birmingham and eventually transitioned into plant management, then into area management over multiple plants, then into general management with overall responsibilities for the shops, plants, as well as, other responsibilities. I worked for a number of years as a representative of a procurement group when we began to purchase items on a nationwide basis. “I finished my career at Vulcan after the completion of implementing an oracle system, my specialty being in mobile equipment management, mobile equipment documentation/record keeping. I was retired for six years, during which time I performed consulting work in the aggregate industry. I became aware of the opportunity here and it
and screening equipment in the various industries we serve. We fully understand a high percentage of these machines initially go into the rental market first and are eventually purchased, so we plan on renting the full line of both manufacturers products,” Warr said. “We looked at several manufactures of crushing and screening equipment and decided it was important to go with a manufacturer that was U.S.-based and one that could effectively supply our parts and product support needs. Both of these manufacturers we chose to partner with are Ohio-based, U.S. manufacturers who have already forged successful partnerships and are working with other existing Caterpillar dealers in the United States for supplying machines, parts, and service,” Warr said. When asked about his career and how it will equate to success at Thompson Tractor,
Thompson Tractor’s Bill Warr (L) and Jim Bailey welcome the addition of two new crushing and screening lines to their product offerings.
really fit with what I’ve done over the span of my career. I felt like my experience could provide a high degree of expertise for Thompson and for their sales staff in the application of crushing and screening products.” Bailey worked with Vulcan primarily in the Alabama marketplace, and eventually transitioned into multi-state responsibilities in the 27 states that Vulcan has operations. Being entrenched in the Alabama area, Bailey said, “I already know a lot of the players in the Thompson Tractor marketplace. It’s a small world, and I’m running across names I’ve known for many years and am even meeting with sons and grandsons of people I dealt with at Vulcan Materials in the past.” Bailey will help with coordinating the efforts of sales and product support training for this segment of Thompson Tractor’s product line. “The actual hands on training of mechanics will be done here in house as they already have a highly skilled, robust training group here. A designated lead person has already been assigned to this group of products and that person interfaces directly with the manufacturers to ensure that each Thompson location has trained service and product support personnel for these new lines. Both IROCK and Screen Machine Industries are already heavily engaged in technical training and are available and highly accessible to help us out on any supplemental training,” said Bailey. According to Warr, each of Thompson Tractor’s heavy equipment salesmen throughout its service area will be charged with the responsibility of identifying prospects for these product lines. “The sales staffers are receiving the addisee THOMPSON page 56

Urbanization Creates Challenges, Thompson Tractor Opportunities in Crushing Business to Carry Firms’ Product Lines THOMPSON from page 50
The Lokotrack Urban
By Juhamatti Heikkilä SPECIAL TO CEG
Urbanization means faster and more numerous construction projects. This is good news for the crushing business, but it also brings along new challenges. Cost structures are changing, which makes it necessary for crushing to take place closer to the actual construction site. Simultaneously, crushing within cities is becoming more tightly controlled through environmental and safety regulations. We believe that sustainability and operational flexibility should and can be built into the same package. That’s why we made Lokotrack an urban citizen. Our customers have an increasing need for crushing operations close to densely inhabited areas, even in the centers of cities. Especially in fast-growing countries, where cities are quickly expanding and masses of people are moving closer to what would be considered traditional crushing sites, urban crushing is often a necessity. These operations are regulated by environmental permits that vary from country to country. When designing the new Lokotrack Urban, we wanted to simplify the answer to some of these key environmental and operational challenges with a single solution. Challenge 1 — Solving the origin of disturbances The main issues for crushing rock close to communities are noise and dust emissions. Areas with bad air quality have increasingly tight limitations for dust emissions, whereas long-term exposure to loud crushing noise, both for employees on site as well as people living nearby, leads to various health concerns. Solution: Since noise is one of the key issues, we decided to find the root cause that makes crushing noise disturbing. To do so, we collaborated with some of our local authorities, research organizations and private companies operating with acoustics and communal design. Our solution focuses particularly on the reduction of crusher noise, which makes the whole crushing operation less disturbing. Since noise protection mechanisms need to be as air-tight as possible, they also help to manage dust emissions. This is especially the case when combined with other dust prevention features, such as a high-pressure water spraying system. Challenge 2 — Transportability and making operations easy Noise and dust are not the whole story. One common target for most operators is to limit the need for transportation.
In the worst-case scenario, demolition waste from construction and rock from quarries are transported back and forth. This leads to hundreds of truckloads, increased transportation costs, more traffic and emissions — and even delays in construction projects. Many quarry operators also work in multiple sites, and equipment may need to be moved several times a week. Solution: A machine designed for short-term use must be both robust and compact. We decided to utilize proven technology — but to add new noise and dust protection features to build a unique machine. As the base technology, we chose LT106, one of our most widely used mobile crushing plants in the market. We paid special attention to make it as easy to maintain as possible. If needed, Urban can be “packed up” for transportation in only 15 to 30 minutes. The compact machine is also easy to move around within the same site. Ideally, aggregates can be used in the same location to completely avoid hauling. Challenge 3 — Beating the regulations When operation is planned for a limited period of time, using mobile equipment is often the most ideal choice. With mobile plants, however, it doesn’t make sense to invest in the same added protection mechanisms as with stationary plants. Therefore, it may prove difficult to comply with the environmental permit regulations. Solution: Urban has all the necessary features built in to fulfill these regulations. Feedback we have received from the field supports the fact that using Urban has a positive impact on the permit process, especially when it comes to getting a short-term permit. Can Urban Crushing Change the Way We Build Infrastructure for Good? Whether crushing closer or farther away from cities, demands will continue to increase for smoother, safer and more sustainable crushing operations. Regulations as well as cost structures are changing, and equipment too must support these developments. We at Metso are ready to take the challenge. Feel free to contact our experts and join the conversation at Metso Lokotrack channel in Facebook. Juhamatti Hiekkilä is manager, product safety of Metso Corporation.

tional product training to be able to match our crushing and screening product offerings with the particular applications of the customer. Whether it be construction materials recycling, reclamation, sand and gravel, or aggregate production, each Thompson heavy equipment salesman, with the help of Jim Bailey, will be able to address and provide solutions for their customer’s needs. When a salesman finds the opportunity for a customer to have something crushed, rescreened, or segregated, Bailey will go onsite, visit with the customer, and provide his expertise on an overall equipment solution,” Warr said. When asked about his short and long term plans with Thompson Tractor, Bailey said, “My long-term plan is to be here to support and help our sales staff for placement of these new machines in an effort to make Thompson a solid and viable dealer of crushing and screening equipment. The total goal: To have Thompson up and running as a well-respected quality provider of crushing and screening equipment with a high level of product support. “My day-to-day plan is to support each and every sale in achieving the long term. I think the market is large. I see a lot of opportunities that have not yet been identified in our market area. I feel confident that we can meet or beat any of the competitors in the field from both a quality product offering and product support standpoint, using the ‘Caterpillar way’ of achieving success, which includes full support and a complete one stop shop approach for a customer’s product, service, and parts needs. “I think Thompson can become the premier dealer for crushing and screening equipment through leveraging the quality of the total equipment offerings package, the skill of our staff, and the number of locations we operate throughout the state of Alabama and the panhandle of Florida.” From a parts standpoint, both Warr and Bailey concur that the intent for the new crushing and screening product lines will quickly have the same standard of quality for parts availability and delivery efficiency as the Caterpillar line. “We will stock all wear parts a customer would need based on where the concentration of the machines are sold,” Bailey said. “Sales-service-parts-rentals-trade ins is the whole package here. All of the key players in Thompson Tractor want the screening and crushing line to be viewed in the same way as our earth moving equipment line.” “What we have to bring to this segment of the industry is one of unequaled product support, in the area of parts, service and overall training of our staff,” Warr said. “We have always been committed to this and will always continue to be committed to this. That’s what our customer’s need and what they expect. We’ve made a very substantial investment in machine inventory from both Screen Machine Industries and IROCK and are now stocking virtually any of the machines from these manufacturers that a customer might need.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s website at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) Atlas Copco Hydro Magnets Pick Profit From Concrete Demolition Waste Atlas Copco’s hydro magnets quickly and easily separate valuable iron and steel from concrete waste for subsequent recycling. The hydro magnets can be used with carriers that have exisiting uni-directional auxiliary circuits with a signal line to power and control the magnet, so there is no need for a generator or electric cables from the carrier. They are available as fixed or mobile units where the magnet is attached by the use of a chain. The hydro magnets can magnetize and demagnetize as much as 25 percent faster than conventional magent controllers and handle 617- to 16,535-lb. loads, according to the manufacturer. The hydro magnet features a flow divider that provides flow and pressure to an onboard hydraulically driven generator. Highly activated voltage rapidly reaches the magnetic strength to attract a large amount of ferrous material and hold it firmly in place. A rapid alternation of the polarity accelerates demagnetization, resulting in fast material drop and a magnet plate free from even small pieces of steel. The optimized power/weight ratio and intelligent interaction between all integrated components in the attachment offers optimal handling performance. This results in faster collection and loading processes. The electronically controlled generator is made of corrosionfree alloy and has a digital controller in a waterproofed body. Atlas Copco’s digital generator control technology gives a magnetization and demagnetization process cycle that is up to 25 percent shorter than conventional magnet controllers. This, in turn, lowers fuel consumption and increases the volume of
processed material. The digital controller also protects the hydro magnet against the risk of damage caused by short circuiting, overheating or excessively high or low revolutions of the generator. All key components of the hydro magnet are integrated into a compact design, and the magnet plate is made to handle harsh environments. A hermetically sealed steel case protects the magnet coil against mechanical and enviromental effects, and an external Hardox steel ring protects against wear. The large steel surface compensates for temperature increases. A multi-functional diagnostic panel in a waterproofed body indicates current working status and potential faults for troubleshooting. No special maintenance is needed apart from periodic inspections of the mounting hardware and eletrical cable connections between the generator body and the magnet plate. Using hydro magnets to collect ferrous material remaining in the demolition pile not only means more profit but also reduces the risk of damage to crushers, conveyor belts and other jobsite equipment, according to the manufacturer. RedStone Turns to Riggs CAT for Possible Solutions to Shoring Challenge REDSTONE from page 28
Efficiency’s Shoring Specialist, Dan Meredith, who provided factory-direct installation assistance. “Dan was competent and knew exactly what he was doing,” said Cosse. “He had very good patience and was a very good teacher. By the end of just one day, our crew could install the slide rail system by themselves.” Meredith is part of Efficiency Production’s special operations shoring division. “It was great working with both Riggs CAT and RedStone, three different companies coming together for a common objective,” Meredith said. Clark said, “I observed how Dan worked with and handled the crew and I was very impressed with him. He interacted with RedStone’s crew to make the slide rail go into the ground effectively and efficiently, but he also showed respect to those professionals that were there with Red Stone. It takes a special person to blend into a crew like that and Dan did that seamlessly,” Clark concluded. Installation Takes Half the Time With Efficiency Slide Rail System and Installer Slide Rail is installed by sliding the steel panels into integrated rails on vertical posts and then pushing the panels and
posts incrementally down to grade as the pit is dug. “It took about a day to install the system which was half the time we thought it would take,” said Cosse. “I think that if we’d used another type of shoring or didn’t have Dan on site, it could have taken twice as long.” RedStone rented from Riggs the slide rail equipment to shore a 14 by 14 ft. excavation, 20 ft. deep. It installed the system with a Cat 330F and Cat 323F excavators, plus a Cat frontloader. RedStone Construction Group has been serving Arkansas for more than 35 years, offering a wide range of services including excavation and earthwork, underground utilities, concrete and asphalt paving and repairs. Entire Development to Achieve LEED Certification VIEW from page 1
The block, located at the northeast corner of Charlotte Avenue and 11th Avenue North, will be a mixed-use building consisting of ground floor retail, open loft-style office space and multi-family units. “There are a total of 378 apartment units, loft style office space and restaurant/retail space on the street level,” said Webb. “The attached parking structure serves as a podium and will contain over 900 spaces of office, retail and tenant parking.” Crews have kept busy installing deep foundations, grade beams and standing columns. They also will be pouring elevated post-tensioned slabs and installing underground utilities. “The office, retail and parking are located within a posttension concrete structure, and will be finished per tenant specs. The multifamily units are wood frame structure with extensive interior and exterior amenities features including pools, golf simulators, wine and game rooms and saunas. All of this working within one large structure requires coordination between multiple contractors and cooperation from all trade partners,” said Webb.
upcoming Block E project is a structural steel office building comprised of more than 2,200 tons of steel, with an erection duration of 15 weeks. All work should be completed by December 2018. To date, there have not been any major setbacks. Crews are expected to move more than 75,000 cu. yds. of material on the project, roughly 50,000 of which is soil. A variety of equipment is currently being used on site, including large track hoes, dozers, two large crawler cranes, two 36 in. diameter drill rigs and various smaller backhoes and lulls. Some of the main materials being used during construction include concrete, steel, masonry, EIFS and cement board siding. Webb said coordinating MEP trades and making the building watertight will be among the most time-consuming tasks, adding there has been one unexpected issue crews have had to address. “There’s a large, 15-foot diameter active sewer line running between both projects that we must constantly be mindful of, as we don’t want to risk a collapse from placing heavy machinery on this brick sewer from the mid-1800s.” The Atlanta-based architectural firm Cooper Carry pro-
the pieces so they all work together. On Block D, for example, we have three uses stacked vertically on top of each other: residential apartment units sitting on top of office space, which then sits on top of retail and with a parking deck sandwiched in at the rear. Our team created a design concept that would seamlessly connect all uses while still maintaining the integrity of each product.” Buck said the most satisfying part of working on Capitol View has been the relationships the design team has been able to build with the client and contractor teams. “The primary inspiration for the design team is the raw, edgy quality of The Gulch as it exists today, said Buck. “Many of our material selections have drawn from that existing palette. We have also been inspired by the raw, exposed rock that can be found throughout Nashville. There will be a feature wall in the office lobby that was designed to honor that amazing texture. “The entire development will be certified LEED for neighborhood development. In addition, the office tower will be certified LEED silver. I think the vibrant, urban atmosphere of the development as a whole is going to be one of its best features. Each of these city blocks is being designed to

Webb noted that prior to construction, the site featured a variety of properties and even items with historic ties. “In the late 1800s, this area was known as ‘Hell’s Half Acre,’ home to new European immigrants and saloons. From there, it was home to various businesses and residences, including an ice house, a service station, a car dealership and Greyhound bus station. We have uncovered cobblestone roadbeds and outdated trolley tracks during our site work. We found a large well lined with timbers, abandoned years earlier. We have discovered abandoned sewer lines dating to pre-civil war Nashville.” Demolition was required in the early stages of the project, with extensive work needed to bring the site to its present condition. Trees and garbage left on site were removed, and grades were brought to a universal campus-wide level. The current project is a miscellaneous steel package. The

vided master planning services for the full six-block development, and is currently providing architectural services on two of the city blocks. “Boyle’s team in Nashville had the initial vision for revitalizing this under-utilized area,” said Alysha Buck, Cooper Carry project architect. “They then partnered with Northwestern Mutual and Northwood Ravin for the residential component. The client and design teams were all very inspired by the historic brick warehouses in The Gulch area. We wanted to incorporate their authentic details, rich texture and beautiful patina. The sort of authentic patina that builds up over time can’t be reproduced, so we have re-interpreted those historic details into a modern design. Buck said large mixed-use projects are often challenging. “The design needs to be very strategic and thoughtful in order to meet the needs of each individual use and arrange
engage and activate the sidewalks, and the critical mass of the office tenants, hotel guests, residents and retail consumers will keep an exciting energy throughout the day. The site also sits adjacent to the future Greenway linear park — a great resource for commuters and residents.” According to Buck, there also are some pretty spectacular amenities for the future residents of the apartments. In addition to a recording studio, wine cellar and indoor pool and spa, there will be an expansive outdoor pool deck with views of the Capitol building. There are two other courtyards with more intimate spaces, but the pool deck would be a great place to host a party.” The Capitol View project includes two other major undertakings, one which is already complete. Capitol View site because of the location,” said Nick Paul, vice president of Real Estate of HCA Healthcare. “After conversations with Boyle and Northwestern Mutual, we knew we had found the right site and the right development partners because we share a common vision for Capitol View — a vibrant community that will mix business and residential development, while also helping to revitalize the North Gulch. We are very excited about building upon our 48-year history in Nashville through the opening of the HCA tower and completion of the Capitol View development.” Lifeway sold its longtime headquarters campus to join in the revitalization of the North Gulch. In April 2016, Lifeway purchased a block at Capitol View and hired Boyle to develop their new 250,000 sq.-ft. headquarters. Construction is moving forward, with an expected opening by the end of 2017. “I had certain high expectations when we entered into a partnership with Boyle to build our new headquarters,” said Dr. Thom Rainer, CEO of Lifeway. “We are well into the project, and I can say unequivocally every expectation has been exceeded. Here is the simple reality. If we were to do this massive project all over again, I would choose Boyle. Their execution, communication, professionalism, promptness and counsel have been nothing short of incredible.” Skanska, which built the HCA building, is currently working on the Lifeway structure. Other Capitol View projects to be carried out include a dog park, playground, a yoga lawn and sand volleyball courts. The site is also a trailhead for the Nashville Greenway, connecting Capitol View to more than 190 mi. of biking and running trails throughout Davidson County. The Capitol View project shines a spotlight on The Gulch, an area popular with locals, college students and visitors. Located in the heart of Nashville, The Gulch is a trendy area of urban development and redevelopment on the southwest border of the city’s Central Business District, and is described as a mix of the old, the adapted and the cutting-edge. A Gulch Business Improvement District was created more than a decade ago and is managed by the Nashville Downtown Partnership. In February, 2009, it was announced the Gulch neighborhood had been certified as a LEED Green Neighborhood. It was the first neighborhood in the South to receive such recognition. Yoder & Frey Reports Online Boost With New Platform Yoder & Frey recently implemented a new free internet bidding platform and saw an explosion in online interest and bidding at its most recent Ashland, Ohio, auction. Bidding was brisk at the one-day event with a mix of machinery going under the hammer; and online sales were up a massive $1.5 million over the previous auction, clearly demonstrating the international appeal and growing demand for quality used construction and related equipment, according to Yoder & Frey. Buyers from across the USA and from more than 95 countries worldwide signed up and used the new online platform, developed by Yoder & Frey’s international partner Euro Auctions, itself a leader in the unreserved industrial plant, construction equipment and agricultural machinery auctions sector since 1998. “The new online sales platform is not only robust, safe, secure and easy to use, it is also totally free for bidders to sign up to and to buy from,” said Peter Clark, CEO of Yoder & Frey. “The technology has been used by auctioneers for over 20 years and to
date has recorded global sales of almost $1 billion worth of machinery with over 20,000 registered online bidders. There are no barri-
equipment to a known audience of over 140,000 registered users plus we can analyze the bidding and final hammer data in detail; further helping us target interested buyers with quality and relevant lots.” This new Internet platform also was featured at the Yoder & Frey sale in Kissimmee, Fla., on May 24, followed by the auctions at Saugatuck, Mich., on May 31 and in Ashland, Ohio on June 21, and meant these auctions would reach out to a truly global audience. Consignors are able to target many more potential buyers while those looking to buy will increasingly be able to locate and bid on the exact specification of quality used heavy Peter Clark equipment they require. Being free and easy to sign up and use along Yoder & Frey with the robust and proven performance of the platform all add to its appeal and should help expand the reach and appeal of auctions to many ers for buyers; it provides a truly global more people, according to Yoder & Frey. reach and is also great for consignors. ing at $80 million with the highest value item sold online valued at almost $1,000,000. The platform also has been used by buyers located in almost half of all the 196 countries around the world today, and by all nations in the top 70 in economic terms. To date 100,000 lots have been sold via the Internet using this platform. “While bidders will always want to turn up to our auctions, see the equipment first hand, kick the tires, and interact with their buddies, a growing number of busy or oversees buyers who wouldn’t otherwise be able to attend one of our auctions prefer to use computers or handheld smart devices to either bid on specific lots or simply monitor the used equipment markets,” Clark said. “We’ve seen growing online demand over recent years, and are pleased to introduce this new robust, well tested and easy to use Internet platform to our customers, achieving a massive leap forward in performance and reach without risk; enabling our buyers and consignors to reap real advantage over the coming months and years.” For more information, visit www.yoderandfrey.com/. Commercial Construction…
Index Indicates High Revenue Expectations for 2017 Commercial construction is in high demand across the country and contractors are confident in the trajectory of the industry, according to the USG + U.S. Chamber of Commerce Commercial Construction Index, launched June 15. Nearly all contractors surveyed — 96 percent — expect revenues to grow or remain stable this year compared to 2016, with 40 percent expecting an increase and only 3 percent expecting a decrease in revenue. The Index is a new quarterly economic indicator designed to gauge what drives the commercial construction industry and its leaders, including specific issues like backlog of work, new business pipeline, revenue projections, workforce issues, and access to financing. Given the sector’s importance to the U.S. economy and the outsized role it could play in years to come, the data contained in the Index will be vital to better understanding trends, challenges and opportunities. The research was developed with Dodge Data & Analytics (DD&A), a leading provider of insights and data for the construction industry, by surveying commercial and institutional contractors. “This first-of-its-kind Index was born out of a need to understand the issues that affect commercial construction. The Index will deliver critical insights into the future health of the industry,” said Jennifer Scanlon, president and chief executive officer of USG Corporation. “USG is committed to providing solutions for our customers in order to help the entire industry make strong contributions to the U.S. economy. Through the Index we are able to identify areas of
strength and pinpoint areas of improvement where industry leaders must focus.” Two-thirds (66 percent) of contractors said they expect to employ more workers in the next six months, indicating growth in a sector that employs approximately 3 million Americans. But 61 percent of Index respondents reported difficultly finding skilled workers. The contractors reported the biggest shortages in the concrete, interior finishes/millwork, masonry, electrical and plumbing trades. “The commercial construction industry is a vital engine for the American economy,” said Tom Donohue, president and CEO of the U.S. Chamber. “The projected growth uncovered in this research is good news for employers and workers, but there is reason for concern in the lack of qualified talent available in vital specialties. To get our economy growing to its full potential, we must ensure that we have a workforce that is ready to fill the available jobs. Each quarter, this first-of-its-kind research will make us smarter about future challenges and inform solutions for our country’s leaders.” The report looks at the results of three leading indicators — backlog levels, new business opportunities and revenue forecasts — to generate a composite index on a scale of 0-100 that serves as an indicator of health for the contractor segment on a quarterly basis. The Q2 2017 composite index score was 76, representing continued health in the sector. This composite score is up two points from a 74 in the Q1 survey, driven primarily by a bump in the ratio between actual and
ideal backlog. New business and revenue results also saw slight increases quarterover-quarter. The composite scores from the three drivers of confidence were: • Backlog: 81, up four points in Q2 over Q1. Contractors’ current average backlog levels represent 81 percent of their ideal backlog levels, up from 77 percent in Q1. On average, contractors currently hold 9.9 months of backlog, while the ideal amount is 12 months. • New Business: 77, up two points in Q2. Nearly all contractors continue to report high or moderate confidence in the market. Well over half of contractors (59 percent) reported high confidence in new business over the next 12 months (up from 51 percent in Q1), indicating a shift to higher levels of confidence among some respondents. • Revenues: 71, up two points in Q2. An overwhelming 96 percent of contractors expect revenues to grow or remain stable in 2017 over 2016. Of those expecting revenue increases, the actual percentage of expected increases varies widely. Forty percent expect revenue increases of 7 percent or more in the next 12 months. The Index findings are compiled using survey results from contractors within a DD&A panel of more than 2,700 decision makers from across key facets of the commercial construction industry. This first public report was developed using research from previous quarters, which puts into context
the state of contractor sentiment in the U.S. building industry. About the Index The USG + U.S. Chamber of Commerce Commercial Construction Index is a quarterly economic index designed to gauge the outlook for, and resulting confidence in, the commercial construction industry. USG Corporation and the U.S. Chamber produce this Index, along with Dodge Data & Analytics (DD&A). Each quarter, researchers from DD&A source responses from their Contractor Panel of more than 2,700 commercial construction decisionmakers in order to better understand their levels of confidence in the industry and other key trends. This panel allows DD&A to provide findings that are representative of the entire U.S. construction industry by geography, size, and type of company. The Commercial Construction Index report is intended for general informational purposes only. It is not intended to support an investment decision with respect to USG, nor is it intended to be used for marketing purposes to any existing or prospective investor of USG. This report is not a forecast of future results for USG and actual results of USG may differ materially from those of the commercial construction industry.
