Falling Through the Cracks Holes On Job Sites Can Sometimes Be Overlooked Safety Hazards By Lucy Perry CEG CORRESPONDENT
Deaths from falls lead fatalities in construction. Construction workers just as often die from fall-through hazards as they do from work at elevations. In 2018, OSHA logged the preventable deaths of 320 workers. This year OSHA’s National Safety
Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction showcases the critical need for safety precautions both around holes and at height. Holes are defined by OSHA as gaps or spaces in a floor, roof, horizontal walkingworking surface, or similar surface at least 2 in. at its smallest dimension. see CRACKS page 22

Linder Holds May Groundbreaking Ceremony for New Ft. Myers Facility A group of Linder Industrial Machinery staffers converged on a piece of property in Ft. Myers, Fla., on May 18 for the official groundbreaking of the company’s newest facility. The 10-acre parcel of land for construction of this branch sits between Alico Road and Supply Drive with access to I-75. The site contractor of the project, Lee-Mar Construction based in Ft.
(L-R): Joe DeOreo, Heith Draper, Vincent Aguayo, Tom Bauers, Ray Henry and Louis Escobar will be instrumental in the success of the future Linder Industrial Machinery’s Ft. Myers, Fla., branch facility.
Myers, plans to have the facility ready for occupancy in the first quarter of 2022. Linder’s Southwest Florida region manager, Vince Aguayo, said that “Lee-Mar Construction is an existing Linder customer and we’re excited for them to get this job started and completed. This branch has been a long time in the coming.” With construction goods and materials being in high demand, the contractor for this project is holding the 50,000 yards of fill material needed to get the job under way quickly. Structural steel for the facility is in storage at another location and is ready and waiting for the slab to be poured for the 22,000 sq. ft. building. At the time of the groundbreaking, utility work was scheduled to get started at any given time. “We’re excited to be able to support our customers in the fashion that they expect to be supported,” Aguayo said. “Once the facility is complete, we’re looking forward to growing and expanding our work force in this area. The staff that is in this area already does a great job down here and we’re pleased to add a facility to support them with a full shop of technicians. We can’t wait till this is completed.” The full-service Ft. Myers branch will provide sales-service-parts-rentals for the entire Linder Industrial Machinery product line.
The honors of turning the first ceremonial shovel of dirt for construction of the new Ft. Myers location was given to Linder’s Vince Aguayo (L), VP, southwest Florida region, and Tom Bauers, VP, Florida division.
Hiring Remains Big Business Challenge for Steel Erectors In January, the Steel Erectors Association of America surveyed its members regarding the business challenges they face. More than 40 percent of those responding said that hiring issues are currently their biggest challenge and 37 percent of them believe hiring will continue to be a problem over the next three years. Closely related to this issue is business growth, which is hindered by the inability to hire enough people with the right skills. More than 18 percent of member respondents currently face business growth challenges with that number expected to increase over the next three years. Meanwhile, having craft training in place to support new and existing personnel is the third biggest concern, although SEAA members feel their craft training needs will improve by 2024. “SEAA has successfully been growing its Ironworker Craft Training program over the last eight years. We currently have nearly 30 members participating in the program with more joining all the time,” said Geoff Kress, president of SEAA. “In addition, we have launched an aggressive video production schedule to create about 20 short training videos by the end of the year. These videos align with the SEAA/NCCER ironworker training curriculum.” In addition to SEAA’s job board, which is free for members but available to anyone, SEAA will explore additional resources to assist members with hiring challenges, added Kress. One noteworthy result of the survey — a whopping 74 percent of members who responded say they would recommend SEAA to a friend or colleague. “SEAA provides critical networking and training resources for both open shop and union erectors, fabricators, and general contractors,” said Jack Nix, membership committee chairman. ARDOT Continues Investigation, Fires Inspector for Ignoring Bridge Crack
Arkansas Department of Transportation photo
This photo, pulled from 2019 drone footage according to the Arkansas Department of Transportation, shows the fracture as it appeared at the time. Subsequent photos taken in 2021 show the fracture had expanded and caused extensive damage to the beam.
As the investigation continues as to why a significant beam fracture occurred on the I-40 bridge across the Mississippi River, an inspector with the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) who checked the 48-yearold structure in 2019 and failed to discover the crack, has been fired and may face criminal charges. ARDOT officials announced the inspector’s dismissal May 17 at a news conference in Little Rock, according to WMC-TV in Memphis. The Arkansas agency noted that the employee who inspected the bridge in 2019 and 2020 was not using proper protocol and failed to “carry out his responsibilities.” ARDOT Director Lorie Tudor said the incident proved negligence in “the inspection process” and the crack “should’ve been discovered in 2019.” Tudor added that her department will reinspect the I-55 bridge, too, which now serves as the main carrier of traffic between eastern Arkansas and southwestern Tennessee. At 72 years old, the Memphis-Arkansas Bridge is much older than the I-40 bridge, and it is currently jammed with car and truck traffic due the closure of the younger structure. In addition to increasing its hands on inspection, ARDOT has purchased a drone to help in the process. According to both state DOTs, repairs on the 9,432-ft.-long Hernando de Soto bridge, built with six lanes for I-40 vehicular traffic, will be accom-
plished in two phases. • Phase 1 require steel plates to be installed on both sides of the fractured beam to provide stability. The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) estimated the fabrication of the 11,000-lb. beams would be completed by May 19, • Designs for Phase 2 are currently under way and will be finalized with a selected contractor in the coming days. WMC Action News 5 reported that TDOT discovered that the fracture impacts 100 percent of the outboard plate, 100 percent of the top plate and 20 percent of the bottom plate. The TDOT oversees repairs on the bridge and its design team is considering using steel rods over the damaged area until the damaged 37-ft. of beam can be replaced. Meanwhile, the bridge remains closed indefinitely while transportation officials from both states determine if it

is safe to resume vehicular traffic and continue working on a plan for repairs. The I-40 bridge closed May 11 when a routine inspection that day uncovered the fracture in a support beam in the bridge’s truss, but in the days since, videos and photos have surfaced showing that the crack may have been present even earlier than the 2019 inspection. A local drone enthusiast searched his video archives and discovered he has a 2019 image of that damage, according to a report from the Memphis TV station. ARDOT confirmed an inspector’s drone video from May 2019 showing the same damage, but the agency declined to release the inspector’s 2019 drone video, WMC Action News 5 reported. ARDOT explained that over time, climate and the weight of traffic can expand cracks in bridges; however, the department is unsure if the fracture was as significant in 2019 as it is in 2021. In one piece of good news, although drivers cannot cross the river and must use the I-55 crossing 3 mi. to the south, barge traffic under the bridge has resumed on the Mississippi River. Nebraska-based Kiewit Construction, the same group working on the $81 million Cantrell Road widening project in West Little Rock, Ark., has been selected to make the needed repairs on the I-40 bridge repair, an ARDOT spokesperson confirmed to the Memphis TV station.
K-Tec, Soil Connect Partner to Promote Efficient Earthmoving Soil Connect and K-Tec Earthmovers are working together to promote responsible and efficient earthmoving and material transportation practices across the United States. In order to bring awareness to the common pitfalls and inefficiencies faced by today’s dirt movers, the companies have agreed to work together to educate the earthmoving industry through multiple cross-promotional channels about new technologies and best practices. The companies also have discussed the integration of Soil Connect’s eTickets system into K-Tec’s new scraper telematics portal dashboard. “K-Tec is a heavy equipment manufacturer that is constantly on the cutting edge of technology,” said Cliff Fetner, founder and CEO of Soil Connect. “I see many parallels between our businesses, as we are often working with the same contractors that move lots of dirt, have excess dirt, or need more dirt on their job sites. Our marketplace is able to connect these hardworking professionals to make their lives easier.” “Soil Connect continues to develop revolutionary technology that is disrupting the dirt world and challenging old, inefficient methods of daily tasks,” said Mike Palitsky, president and CEO or K-Tec Earthmovers Inc. “Likewise, K-Tec’s scrapers have proven to be more efficient than traditional forms of earthmoving. We believe that working together progresses our mutual goal to advance earthmoving technology in the USA, which will benefit both of our organizations — as well as the entire industry — now and for the foreseeable future.” For more information on Soil Connect, visit www.soilconnect.com. Industry Focuses On Crucial Need for Safety Precautions CRACKS from page 1
“Safety is a cornerstone of any good business in the construction industry,” wrote crane service company Crane Repair, Englewood, Colo. “A construction manager’s commitment to ensure safety for everyone who steps foot on a site is essential.” In a blog on its website the company offers tips for preventing fall-through incidents and injuries on the job. Noting many places a worker can fall through on a construction site, the crane repair company said that tripping hazards often cause fall-throughs. “Another hazard is any place on site with excessive noise,” the company said. “Excessive noise can make it hard for a worker to hear verbal warnings about a safety hazard from co-workers.” Crane Repair believes the first step to preventing falls on a job site is a thorough safety hazard inspection. That’s where OSHA comes in. The agency offers guidelines for inspections, including identifying load limits for each job site area, potential tripping hazards, unprotected edges and areas of excessive noise. “Another critical factor in workplace safety is worker training,” the company said. “Workers need to be kept up to date on OSHA safety requirements and your company’s policies regarding fall prevention.” The proper use of fall arrest systems must be taught to ensure that if a fall does happen, the system will stop it before the worker hits the ground. Crane Repair offers tips for preventing falls from hazardous hotspots across a construction site, including unprotected edges. “An opening in a wall or a hole in the floor can be a falling hazard if left unprotected.” To prevent a fall from an unprotected edge: • After creating an unprotected edge, immediately cover it or put up rope to protect it; • Keep areas with holes off limits; • Hole coverings must be able to support twice the weight of a worker and their tools or materials; • Do not carry materials that are big enough to block your vision. If you must do so, be sure your fall arrest system is securely in place; and • Keep the work area clean of clutter that could cause a trip. “Falls are a risk for every construction worker. But working to prevent them in these ways can minimize the chance of them happening on your job site,” said Crane Repair. Beyond Manholes Open manholes aren’t the only fallthrough hazard on a job site, according to David Gardner, construction safety consult-

ant of Simplified Safety. Unprotected holes in a floor, deck or roof can result in serious injuries as well if workers are unaware of or choose to ignore them. OSHA covers the rules for fall-through protection in 29 CFR 1926 Construction Industry Regulations, Subpart M. ANSI volume A10.18 Safety Requirements for Temporary Roof and Floor Holes, Wall Openings, Stairways, and Other Unprotected Edges in Construction and Demolition Operations addresses the hazards as well. Gardner believes both “are helpful in defining the standard-of-care for managing holes on construction sites.” In a Simplified Safety blog post, he offered a summary of industry safety regulations and standards for prevention of fallthrough injuries. • If you make a hole, guard it. Before cutting the hole, barricade the work area to keep people out. • If the hole must be open, and the fall distance is more than 6 ft., employees must be protected by use of a fall arrest system, guardrails or covers. • Any fall arrest system must meet OSHA criteria established in 1926, Subpart M. • A guardrail must be a minimum of 42 in. high, have a mid-rail and be capable of withstanding a 200-lb. load. “Toe boards are recommended at all times; they are required for work under the hole,” wrote Gardner. • If the hole is not guarded, it must be covered. The cover must support at least a 200lb. load. The cover must be larger than the opening, secured against displacement and properly labeled or identified, such as “Floor Opening Do Not Remove.” “If you have a
choice,” said Gardner, “make both the hole and cover round. An oversized round cover cannot fall through a smaller round hole.” • Never cover a hole with any type of nonsubstantial or non-weight bearing material(s) such as paper, cardboard or plastic. • Industry standards require that, regardless of fall distance, employees be protected from tripping or stepping into holes by covering the openings. “In layman’s terms, if a hole is big enough to fall through, then it must be either be covered, guarded or fall protection measures utilized,” wrote Gardner. “If it is a small hole that presents only a tripping hazard for example a 4-inch diameter hole for a pipe, cover it regardless of the fall distance below the hole.” Contractor’s Role It is the general contractor’s (GC) responsibility to assure all parties properly communicate with one another, and potential safety hazards are brought forth and discussed. “If you see something — say something.” Safety materials provider WeeklySafety.com notes that holes are one hazard area in which many workers forget to protect themselves and co-workers “or at minimum throw some caution tape up and call it good.” OSHA General Industry Standard 1910.28 states employees are to be protected from tripping or stepping into or through any hole less than 4 ft. above a lower level by covers or guardrail systems. Floor holes can be guarded or protected by guardrails, covers and other conventional fall protection methods, according to WeeklySafety.
• Walking and working areas and rooftops should be inspected for potential floor holes, including skylights. • Guardrails used around floor holes must meet specific construction guidelines to prevent falls to lower levels and erected on all unprotected sides or edges. • Body belts are prohibited and may not be used as part of a fall protection system. OSHA Construction Standard 1926.502(b) Guardrail Systems states that guardrails must have a top rail 42 in. high and strong enough to withstand 200 lbs. of force. Mid rails must be 21 in. high and strong enough to withstand 150 lbs. of force, and guardrail systems used at holes must be erected on all unprotected sides or edges of the hole. “When used to protect employees, hole covers must be able to support two times the weight of the employees, equipment and materials,” according to a WeeklySafety.com blog. Hole covers must be color coded or marked with the word “Hole” or “Cover.” OSHA Standard 1926.501 says that each employee on a walking/working surface must be protected from falling through and tripping in or stepping into or through holes. • Hatchways and chute floors are also considered floor holes and must have protection. • A hinged door may be used to prevent accidents involving hatches and chutes that may be located on industrial floors or roofs. • Removable railings should stay in place, even when the opening is not in use. • When materials are going into a floor chute, protection must be provided to prevent falls through the opening. “Never assume everyone will see the hole and step around it, or think that caution tape is enough,” said WeeklySafety. “A slip or trip near the hole can result in a serious injury or worse. Proper covers, guardrails and signage must be utilized on and near floor hole hazards.” When Fall-Throughs Happen When falls do happen, steps can be taken to decrease the possibility of extreme injury. Here are Crane Repair’s suggestions: • Cap all exposed steel rebar to minimize injury if a worker should fall onto it. • Require helmets at all times to protect against traumatic head injury • Use fall arrest systems to stop a fall in progress To further increase safety on your site, stay informed about the latest in worker safety, including OSHA’s resources for safety training. “Establishing and following thorough safety protocol helps keep everyone safe.” CEG

FDOT’S $600M Gateway Expressway Will Improve Flow “It will be primarily built in the median of the Roosevelt Boulevard between the Bayside Bridge and Ulmerton Road,” Carson said. An interchange at Ulmerton Road will be built as part of this project. The new roadway will continue south until it merges with SR 690. “This new roadway is being built along the median of 118th Avenue North,” Carson explained, “and includes flyover bridges connecting to mainline U.S. 19. The new SR 690 will be elevated over portions of 118th Avenue North, 49th Street North, 47th Street North, 43rd Street North, the ramp at 31st Court North and 28th Street North.” In addition to the new SR 690 four-lane tolled expressway from U.S. 19 to west of I-275 and from the Bayside Bridge to I275, project improvements include: • Constructing SR 686A on the north end of the project, a new four-lane elevated tolled (static, meaning the cost will remain the same at all hours) expressway from the Bayside Bridge (CR 611) to just west of I275 within the median of Roosevelt Teamwork Boulevard with a new interchange at Archer Western-de Moya Joint Venture is Ulmerton, at which point it will continue serving as general contractor for the nearly south until it merges with the future SR $600 million ($598 million precisely) proj690; ect. to decrease travel times, making it easier and faster to drive from Pinellas County across the bay into Tampa. Transportation problems have been around for decades, but several expressway projects were cancelled as far back as the 1970s and 1980s, so the county has had no major limitedaccess thoroughfares other than I-275. While significant upgrades to U.S. 19 in the 2000s improved north-south traffic flow, east-west traffic has been relegated to local roads. Greg Deese, FDOT engineer, told ABC Action News that the project has gained momentum in the past two years. By late 2022, it should connect U.S. 19 to I-275 and the Bayside Bridge to I-275, giving drivers a tolled option to commute “several miles up and over dozens of traffic signals.” In addition to speeding up traffic flow, one of the Gateway Expressway project’s goals is “to improve the existing roadway system by enhancing safety, adding capacity and improving mobility,” Carson added.

The new express lanes along I-275 are in addition to the existing general-purpose, non-tolled lanes and are intended to ease congestion and improve traffic flow. FDOT points out that the existing roadways will remain the same for drivers who do not want to pay tolls. ABC Action News recorded Deese as saying, “The surface streets are only going to be for local traffic.” He considers the project a “huge improvement” for commuters who will no longer have to stop at lights and said it will dramatically improve traffic flow, significantly reducing delays. But even drivers on the local streets should see reduced congestion with many travelers diverted to the toll roads. The project also will make it easier for drivers to get to St. Pete Clearwater International Airport, according to FDOT.
In total, the project includes construction of 27 bridges; mechanically stabilized earth walls; concrete and asphalt paving; electronic toll gantries; lighting; signage; and Intelligent Transportation Systems installations.
Boulevard, and while removing sections of the northbound I-275 ramp to Roosevelt Boulevard while maintaining traffic,” she said. “Another operation was the removal of the 4th Street North overpass bridge over I-275 in less than 16 hours,” she added. To assist with that task, Mammoet, a privately held Dutch company specializing in engineered heavy lifting and transport of oversized and heavy objects, provided heavy transport equipment. To speed construction, TyBot, a completely autonomous rebar tying robot, is being used during rebar installation work on the many bridges being constructed on this project, Carson noted. TyBot doesn’t require pre-mapping, programming or calibration. It self-locates, self-positions and self-ties up to 1,000 intersections an hour. It can be deployed to any
job site that has screed rails in place and will do the work of a 6- to 8-person team. Other equipment being used as part of this project is owned by the Archer Western-de Moya Joint Venture, purchased from Ring Power. Rental equipment came from Kelly Crane and Hunter Crane Merchant Transport and Rigging, Carson said. Materials used thus far on this project include: • Structural steel: 8,130 tons • Reinforced steel: 10,800 tons • Concrete beams: 74,200 linear ft. • Concrete: 192,000 cu. yds. • Asphalt: 115,000 tons Despite the challenges and complexity of the project, Carson said it is currently on schedule to complete late next year. CEG
Community Reaction Carson said the project team works closely with the FDOT Public Information Office because community outreach and public information are vital to the success of the design-build project. There is a designated website providing updates and alerts to upcoming lane closures and detours. Despite that, local business owners complain about the vibration of demolition, the noise of construction and the resulting decrease in business (up to 40 percent for some companies) as a result of detours, lane closures, congestion and general obstruction. Deese said that 250 construction workers are on the job site 5 to 6 days a week, day and night, to try to complete the job quickly. Challenges There have been a few challenges with relocating overhead utility lines along 118th Avenue, Carson said. The lines must be moved in order to “build new bridges, allowing travel lanes to remain open while constructing the elevated roadways in the medians of 118th Avenue North and Roosevelt
Despite the challenges and complexity of the project, it is currently on schedule to complete late next year.

Getting Connected to Ride-On Trencher Attachments SPECIAL TO CEG
help operators quickly move from one project to the next.
Ride-on trenchers are one of the most efficient pieces of equipment for underground construction projects. From digging a trench for utility installation to a variety of landscape, hardscape and construction-grade tasks, ride-on machines are the easiest and most affordable solution to help underground construction professionals get the job done. And, with a growing number of available attachments, operators can turn one machine into many and get even more ROI from their trencher. Here are some of the attachments that can increase uptime and
Standard Trencher The standard trencher attachment is a staple for any ride-on trencher machine. It generally comes pre-installed on a ride-on trencher. The standard trencher attachment will dig approximately 4 to 5 ft. into the ground and create a trench 6 to 12 in. wide, although different manufacturers will offer varying size options. With standard trencher attachments, contractors can efficiently create trenches to install irrigation lines, fiber or cable. The most popular trencher attachments will come equipped with a combina-

tion chain that is fitted with both shark tooth and cup tooth chains to cut through a variety of soil conditions. When using a standard trencher attachment, it’s important to always let the trencher work at its own pace. Forcing a trencher to cut faster can lead to broken chains and downtime for repairs. It’s also advised to inspect a chain at the start of every job to ensure that the chain has the proper tension. A good rule of thumb for determining this is to follow the two-finger rule — when inspecting chain tension, two fingers should fit between the chain and the lowest part of the boom when the boom is parallel to the ground.
Contractors also should check to ensure there are no broken teeth on the trencher attachment. Both poor chain tension and broken teeth can reduce the effectiveness of the attachment. Backhoe Unlike most other ride-on trencher attachments, a trencher-backhoe attachment is most often stationed at the front of a machine so that it can operate in conjunction with another attachment. The primary function of a backhoe attachment is to start and finish a trench — similar to an entry-pit and an exit pit in HDD. A backhoe attachment is benefisee TRENCHERS page 36

cial especially on job sites in which the start and end of a trench are in close proximity to urban hazards like fencing or existing landscape structures. A backhoe attachment also is used in rehabilitation and repair projects because it allows for more precise digging than a standard trencher attachment. The typical backhoe attachment starts with a 6-ft. digging depth and has a bucket width of 12 in. As machine size increases so too does backhoe size. Saw A saw attachment — also known as a rock saw — is a circular blade that is similar in appearance to a microtrencher. This attachment is used to cut through difficult and rocky terrain. The most common saw attachments will dig down to a depth of 16 to 48 in. and typically use a conical bit blade with carbide. As a result, it’s important to consistently check the blade for wear. As saws are constantly used in rocky conditions, their bits will wear down faster than standard trencher teeth. Microtrencher Microtrenching is paving the way as a cost-effective solution that can help operators cut time, minimize disruptions and increase their overall ROI. Most commonly used for fiber installation, microtrenching attachments allow for a narrower trench to be created than with a standard trenching attachment. For instance, a microtrencher will cut a trench ½ to 3 in. wide. This narrower trench saves contractors backfilling time and cost
since less backfill will be needed. Microtrenching is typically done in the gutter pan that parallels the road where the asphalt meets concrete of the curb. By cutting a narrower trench when cross cutting and trenching on the side of the road, contractors don’t need to stop traffic, saving on traffic redirection headaches and associated costs. There are two typical blades that most microtrenching attachments will use. The first is a conical style bit that rotates in a holder and functions like a traditional rock saw. The second is a PDC blade, which is composed of diamond with carbide. The conical bits are generally the more affordable option between the two, but diamond PDC blades are growing in popularity due to its cleaner cut and longer lifespan. While a conical bit will be effective through around 4,000 ft. — meaning that contractors will likely need to replace bits daily — a diamond PDC blade will last around 20,0000 ft. before it needs to be replaced. Vibratory Plow A plow attachment is most commonly used to bury flexible pipe, conduit and cable. The plow is an attractive option in these applications as it offers the ability to install the application as the machine drives. Plows also create less ground disturbance than a standard trencher because they do not create an open trench. However, plows may be difficult to operate in hard or rocky ground conditions. There are two different styles of plow blades: a pull
blade and a feed blade. A pull blade does what its name implies and will pull a cable, conduit or fiber behind the blade to install it underground. A feed blade will have a feeding chute on the attachment to allow conduit to be fed down through the attachment and into the ground. Safety Best Practices As with any machine or attachment, it’s always important to read the operator’s manual before boots hit the ground. Remember that anytime crews are digging into the ground, they should always call 811 to get a job site located. Understanding where existing utilities are located is one of the most important steps in mitigating damage and reducing the chance of costly strikes. Additionally, it’s important to take precautions when installing attachments. While attachments are built to have the ability to be changed out, we always recommended that users contact a local equipment dealer when looking to remove or install attachments. Personnel at a dealership have been trained and have access to the proper equipment to ensure a safe attachment exchange. Trenching for Efficiency Ride-on trenchers are consistently one of the most popular machines in underground construction. Now, with the growing number of attachments available, operators can customize their machine to meet almost any job site need, maximizing uptime, improving job performance and increasing ROI.

Rockster Impactor Aids Sustainability of Hawaiian Paradise After a long cruise over the Atlantic Ocean through the Panama Canal, and across the Pacific, Rockster’s mobile impact crusher R700S reached Hawaii — more precisely the island of Oahu. Arist de Wolff and his team of 25 motivated employees were very excited about the arrival of their brand new Austrian crushing plant. Alakona Corp., founded in 1982 by de Wolff’s father Mervyn de Wolff, is an asphalt paving and paving maintenance contracting firm, situated in the Hawaiian capital, Honolulu. Alakona Corp serves Oahu and the neighbor islands, with a wide list of clients that includes federal, state, city and county governments, commercial enterprises, developers, property managers, condominium associations and individual owners. At the very beginning, Alakona Corp focused on pavement maintenance with emphasis on slurry seal, seal coating and minor asphalt repairs. During the recent years the company has moved toward its present service/product mix, deriving its income from asphalt repair, asphalt overlay, new asphalt lay, pavement maintenance, as well as slurry seal, seal coat and crack fill. Alakona’s Perfect Crusher Is Designed, Produced in Austria Alakona owns several machines it needs for its core business, like pavers, rollers, loaders, excavators, slurry and seal coat applicators. When it searched for a crusher to expand its business, it put its focus on compact machinery below 25 tons, which exactly fits its fleet. “We feel that Austrian engineers are really honest. Wolfgang Kormann explained in detail how the machine could be beneficial to us and it is true. We are so flexible in terms of processing different
aggregates and the material we produce with our crusher is of high value. We do also like the fact that the return belt can be turned aside, and we can make another fraction, as well as the fine side belt that can be pulled off. “The screen box is also very beneficial as it allows us to produce different material sizes by just switching some screens. There are some options that others don’t have, and we are very enthusiastic about the hydrostatic drive”, said Arist de Wolff. Due to this drive system, the performance of the R700S is constantly high, as the hydrostatic pressure always adjusts to the power requirements of the crusher, de Wolff added. This leads to a lower diesel consumption per ton of production because the diesel engine always stays within the optimum speed range. New Line of Business: Processing of RAP It was a logical step for Alakona to put emphasis on a recycling business. “Obviously, natural rock isn’t gonna be there forever, in future we would have to ship it in from
the mainland. Sustainability is the key factor. We need a lot of material for subbases, base coarse or backfills. Using reclaimed asphalt pavement instead of natural aggregate saves resources and money. Moreover, RAP contains a bit of bitumen, it is like a glue, holding everything together and giving more compaction”, said de Wolff. Using the attached screening system, Alakona crushes asphalt from 1 ½ to 2 in. to 1 ½ in. minus of a final size material. “We’re doing a bunch of tests like the CBR, to make sure the final material is suitable for reuse in our construction projects,” he added. The Californian Bearing Ratio (CBR) test is a penetration test used to evaluate the subgrade strength of roads and pavements. Ever Heard of Coral Crushing? Another material that Alakona processes with the new Rockster crusher is coral. In Hawaii you find a lot of coral shells underneath the soil. So, when Alakona works on street construction sites close to the ocean they usually excavate coral.
A very successful family business: FLTR – Operator Jon Keck, Owners Mervyn de Wolff, Betsy Wilson, Max de Wolff and Arist de Wolff with his wife and their two girls.
Without a screening system, they run a 3 in. minus final product, used mostly for landscaping. “We like the possibility to use the stockpile belt to get another fraction. Especially for processing coral, we run a 2 to 3 in. coarse aggregate from the side belt and 1 ½ in. minus from the screen. Coral is quite a hard rock with high density. The crushed material contains less fines than the crushed asphalt. We can use it as base coarse for house or concrete paths”, de Wolff said.
Alakona Corp from Honolulu relies on a high-quality Austrian crusher brand to process RAP and coral with its new R700S Rockster portable crushing plant.
Easy Transport Facilitates Entry in Contracting Business With a screen box and return belt, the Rockster R700S weighs only 50,300 lbs. (22.8 tons) and can be easily transported with Alakona’s own flatbed truck without the need of transport permits. This gives great flexibility in terms of future plans, to get a foot in the door of contracting business. It also saves a lot of time and money. “We are able to crush so many kinds of material. Within four days of training this summer, we crushed RAP, coral, concrete and basalt. There are so many possibilities for a lot of different customers like construction companies, privates and of course municipalities. You would think that people on an island would be more aggressive into researching, testing and using recycled material, but they are hesitant in trying new things. It needs to be pushed more and people need to understand that this is the future. There needs to be recycled material especially in construction fields where we could save so much natural resources,” de Wolff said. For more information, visit www.rockster.at.

Powerscreen Responds to Decarbonization Challenge
Powerscreen, a leading provider of mobile crushing and screening equipment, is responding to the industry’s decarbonization challenge by providing solutions that work toward minimized environmental impact and greater sustainability. Powerscreen’s decarbonization story begins with the introduction of the concept of mobile crushing and screening, has evolved to increase fuel efficiency and looks to the future with Powerscreen’s electrification strategy, including an exciting, brandnew concept for the future of crushing and screening — the Eco-Warrior battery powered screener. Neil Robinson, Powerscreen product and applications manager said, “Some may view this topic as a recent trend, but for Powerscreen, decarbonization is multifaceted and has always been at our core. The Powerscreen mobile concept has always contributed towards decreasing the carbon footprint per ton of material produced. “This is done by reducing unnecessary material handling of hauling and loading material to static plants in aggregate production or in the ability to recycle and reuse material at point of use, for example in roadbuilding projects where sub-base material is produced in situ. Using stockpiling conveyors as part of a track mobile set-up is another perfect example of how-to cut-out unnecessary double handling, reducing fuel consumption and therefore carbon production.” Powerscreen has evolved its product range to reduce environmental impact by
making its crushing and screening equipment as fuel efficient as possible, using direct drive systems for its crushing range and improving engine capabilities and driveline design for its screening range. “Direct drive systems are proven to be 13 to 18 percent more fuel efficient when compared with hydrostatic, resulting in significantly less carbon emissions, while improvements to our screening range has reduced engine speeds from 2,200 rpm to 1,800 rpm, which not only means cleaner engines with less emissions, but also reduced fuel usage and therefore carbon produced,” said Robinson. “For example, a typical mid-size screener running at 1,000 hours per year, has a fuel usage reduction of approximately 450 liters, which equates to 1.2 tonnes less of carbon produced annually.” Another important tool for fuel efficiency is Powerscreen Pulse, in-depth machine telematics that helps customers see how and where their machines are being operated, understand fuel consumption and carry out fault-finding activities to ensure optimized performance. “Powerscreen was the first mobile crushing and screening manufacturer to offer indepth machine telematics with the launch of Powerscreen Pulse in 2013. In the early days, it generated a large volume of data, but now our system has been refined to deliver actionable information with customized reports and suggested actions for more fuelefficient operation,” Robinson said.
Electrification is currently a key focus of the Powerscreen decarbonization strategy. The Powerscreen Hybrid range, designed to give customers alternative energy options to operate their range of crushing, screening and conveying equipment, has been dramatically enhanced to include more fully electric crushers and screeners as well as models powered by innovative combinations of diesel and electricity. These options enable customers to choose which fuel to use, depending on cost, location and availability, and are of particular benefit to customers who operate in an area where electricity is more cost effective than diesel fuel, where diesel engine noise is unwanted or on sites where electricity is the preferred energy source. “Customers using Powerscreen Hybrid units powered off the grid have been able to reduce onsite carbon emissions by 57 percent per ton of material produced. While our hybrid customers have traditionally been in environmentally conscious countries and states, where legislation or financial incentives are more focused on green energy, we are witnessing a significant uptake in nontraditional locations, as customers prepare to comply with increased government drives for carbon neutrality.” Powerscreen continues to spearhead the industry’s drive for decarbonization and a clear demonstration of this is a brand-new concept for the future of crushing and screening — the Eco-Warrior battery powered screener. Working closely with automo-
tive technology and using top of the range, hyper efficient drives and intelligent control systems, the Eco-Warrior battery powered screener has been designed to deliver on the powerful screening action that Powerscreen machines are famous for, while being a selfcharging, or plug-in, model that features a simple, quiet engine with no after-treatment requirements, according to the manufacturer. The required engine size has been cut in half compared with the diesel hydraulic unit and the battery pack can mean emission-free running or give a power boost. “To the best of our knowledge this is the first battery powered screener in the world and has been clocking up testing hours since it was built in 2019. It still delivers on the powerful screening action that Powerscreen machines are famous for and we are now exploring taking it from concept to mainstream. “This isn’t a publicity stunt; the drive for decarbonization is real, with the UK, and other governments ruling that carbon emissions have to be reduced by 80 percent by 2050. It’s critical that we dramatically reduce our carbon footprint and Powerscreen has many solutions available today in support of this. However, we’re not stopping there — we’re taking it to the next level, continuing to be the pioneers in adopting technology that supports the industry in meeting the requirements of government decarbonization laws — this is the future.” For more information, visit www. powerscreen.com.

Transportation Biz Brings 30-Year Expertise to Niche Service By Ruksana Hussain CEG CORRESPONDENT
When Brad Grafe, owner and president of Valley Transportation Service Inc., established the company in 1989, he observed a vital niche: providing transportation services to manufacturers and shippers countrywide. From his Grand Meadow, Minn.-based offices, his network of company-owned, leasepurchase and owner-operator trucks provides a much-needed solution to clients across the United States, moving primarily construction and agricultural equipment. From only two trucks, two drivers and two office staff, Valley has grown tremendously in the past three decades, with 60 staff at the main office location, 200 drivers and four outside sales crew and more than 200 trucks. Previously a fertilizer and chemical sales representative for an agricultural equipment cooperative, Grafe managed a trucking company for four years where he learned the business before venturing out on his own in 1989. The scope of services has remained the same at Valley. “The size of the equipment that we haul and the amount of stuff we can put on a trailer has drastically been reduced just because of the size of the equipment,” said Grafe. “We do a

great deal of back-haul stuff, such as large air conditioner and refrigeration units, used farm and agricultural equipment, auction items … anything that will go on a lowboy or specialized trailer, we’ll sure try to tackle it and move it for you.” A big change he has witnessed in the industry in that time is equipment store mergers. “We went from equipment dealers that were hauling to one location that now have 40 locations, so a lot of our growth was in just keeping up with the customers and the demand they had from buying stores. We kept gaining more and more accounts that helped spur our growth.” Valley typically works with Peterbilt and Kenworth trucks, XL Specialized, Manac and Trail King Industries trailers, hauling equipment across most of the Midwest, Arizona, California, Texas and Florida. Located in a smaller building in downtown Grand Meadow until 2006, Grafe moved Valley to its current location on a 16acre space, with an additional 40 acres attached, offering plenty of expansion room for future growth. Where the company started out at 6,000 sq. ft., Grafe added another 6,000 onto it in 2013 and supplemented that
with a new shop this past winter, which is a full-service center, “where we do everything from engine overhauls to brake jobs and oil changes on all of our equipment,” said Grafe. Among specialized services offered at Valley are large equipment — up to 20 ft. wide, 16 ft. tall and 200,000 lbs. — placing the business outside the realm of a regular trucking company. This includes crane load, drive-on and drive-off loading, etc. While Valley has fared well on the equipment front, “We are running into some problems right now with COVID-19 and the issues of being able to get trucks finished and delivered to us,” said Grafe. “We buy new trucks every year on a trade cycle and some of them are getting a little tougher to get. One of the bigger challenges is all the emissions on the engines over the years. It started in 2008 and 2009 when the emissions portion first came out. We had a lot of trouble with engines, so just getting the problems worked out and keeping the motors running over the years has been challenging.” Alongside, working with drivers means safety is a top priority at Valley and the safety director ensures everyone is well-trained on that front. A string of safety awards
earned by the company in recent years proves the value placed on safety for staff working at Valley. Online training is provided to all drivers, with instructional videos and hands-on driver testing. A weekly drivers’ meeting is held where all the drivers present that day meet with the safety team to review different topics and address the everchanging regulations in the industry. Valley works with a team of owner operators and company drivers to support its expanding reach. Approximately 130 trucks are company-owned and operated by company drivers. Another 45 are leased, where Valley offers a lease-purchase program for the drivers so they can buy the trucks from the company. “The workforce is the biggest challenge that we face every day, not so much with the office and shop staff, but the driver situation that has always been a problem,” said Grafe. “But today it seems worse than the prior years. Our drivers are out typically three weeks at a time, so it gets difficult to find that type of person that wants to be away for long.” To address the workforce challenge, aside from competitive pay and bonus, Valley rewards “Driver of the Month” and “Driver of the Year” recognition and the business has
created a new drivers’ lounge in the new shop providing breakfast and lunch. It also has a bunk house outside of town built for drivers so they get their own hotel room they can stay in when their trucks are in the shop. Valley also has stayed ahead of the curve with computer and technology upgrades, including using PeopleNet fleet management software in its semi-tractors to track where vehicles are any time of day. Grafe said he is considering forward-facing and side-view facing cameras to capture accidents as well, as he anticipates steady growth in the future. “We try to add 10 to 15 trucks a year right now, so we try to get that growth scheduled and along with that comes the challenges of the driver issue, so we are trying to battle that and keep our growth up, too.” Business is finally picking up this year after a terrible second quarter last year, said Grafe. “Our mission statement is ‘Our Goal is to Help You Reach Yours,’ so we are here to make sure that the customer is taken care of and they get their customer taken care of … we push that pretty hard with our staff and we try to make it smooth and easy for the customer because we know they’ve got one on the other end that they are trying to satisfy.” CEG

Felling Trailers Releases Newest Utility Pole Cargo Trailer Operator safety, ease of use and maintenance are prime factors taken into account when any company is looking into equipment acquisition. These same factors are even more vital in the Utility & Telcom Industry as they service, build and maintain infrastructures for their state and local regions. Felling Trailers’ re-engineered utility pole cargo trailers (UPT-C’s) are fully engineered and documented products that embody these factors. Thus operators can be assured of many years of reliable, trouble-free service, according to the manufacturer. Felling’s engineering, sales and utility telecom product manager worked together to create a userfocused product, incorporating all of the standard features an operator wants and needs to get through a day’s schedule of pole replacements and line maintenance. The UPT-C model line offers four models with GVWRs (gross vehicle weight rating) ranging from 13,800 to 23,000 lbs. All models are standard with electric
FSA (forward self-adjusting) brakes on all axles with an air brake option available on FT-20 UPT-C. Cargo Box Lengths Available • 20 to 30 ft. length 10 ft. bed (standard on all models) • 24 to 40 ft. length 12 ft. bed (available on all models) • 29 to 46 ft. length 14 ft. bed (available on FT-20 UPT-C only) Functionality, Flexibility Equipped with a 2 in. cold rolled steel, positive locking adjustment pin and designed with a notched flange welded on the pin, the flange notches have to pass through two tabs welded 90 degrees from each other, assuring a positive locked position. The 2 in. positive locking adjustment pin is attached to the trailer with a chain to prevent loss. Improved toolbox design offers safer accessibility for the operator when the trailer is loaded with poles and features a locking t-handle design. The tailgate latching system features a spring-loaded
FT-14 UPT-C in 20 ft./30 ft. length.
securement system, and bumper stops on the tailboard to govern the rear tailgate. Safety By Design The UPT-C trailers feature a triple taillight system which provides for increased visibility of the truck and trailer during offload/loading of poles in the field. Optional amber LED strobe lights, switched and mounted in
tailboard, replace two center lights. Pole transport, UPT-Cs are equipped standard with center and rear, 95 in. wide bolsters with 21 in. sliding lever locking removable stanchions with winch binder and 30 ft. by 4 in. strap. A 45 in. wide front bolster with a 4 in. strap and binder are standard. Optional front bolsters include 60 in. and 95 in. wide. Both are
double c-channel construction and have a 4 in. strap and binder along with lever locking removable stanchions. Multiple load securement points are located down the mainframe rail. Four d-rings provide ideal tiedown points for the material being carried in the cargo box. • 10 in. c-channel main frame rails • Extendable tongue, 8 in. by 4 in. by ¼ in. wall tube with 10 in. by 6 in. by ¼ in. receiver tube • Cargo box, 15 in. tall sides, 10 gauge floor and 12 gauge sides • All wiring and airlines (when equipped with air brakes) are ran internally traveling in a heavy-duty energy chain • No user intervention is required for the wiring or airlines when extending and retracting the tongue • Positive locking adjustment pin with a chain attached to the trailer to prevent loss For more information, call 800/245-2809 or visit www.felling.com.

Registration is open, and plans are under way for GIE+EXPO to bring the industry back together in person this October. Both attendees and exhibitors have indicated they are eager to participate in the annual trade show, which is set for Oct. 20 to 22 at the Kentucky Exposition Center. Online registration — only $20 through Sept. 9 — is available at gie-expo.com. As of April, 675 companies had already signed on to exhibit at GIE+EXPO and the co-located Hardscape North America — an 18 percent increase over the same time in 2019. More than 70 are new exhibitors. And, with the expo center’s recent renovations to the demo area, exhibitors are looking forward to showcasing their latest innovations outdoors where attendees can test drive equipment. “We look forward to attending the GIE+EXPO every year and are eager to get back to the show in 2021,” said Chris Durig, VP of sales, BlueBird Turf Products. “It is the only industry show that provides an audience of distributors, dealers and landscapers at a single event. Additionally, it is the only industry show that provides opportunities for an indoor exhibit as well as outdoor product demonstrations.” Warren Sellers, show manager, said attendees also are ready to gather in person. According to a recent survey of past attendees, 91 percent of landscape professionals and 84 percent of dealers are likely to attend this year.

The annual GIE+EXPO trade show is set for Oct. 20 to 22 at the Kentucky Exposition Center.
“GIE+EXPO has always been a good way to check up on the competition, to see what’s new and talk to the manufacturers of the products we sell,” said Sam Walter, president of Sam Walter & Son Inc. in Fairbury, Ill. “We can’t wait to get back to the show in 2021.” With expanded education on realworld topics such as drones, robotics and connectivity, as well as features that put attendees behind the controls, this year’s show will offer a wide range of dynamic opportunities, including: • Hands-on Drone Zone where attendees can fly drones with expert trainers • Technology Summit presented by

the National Association of Landscape Professionals • UTV test track • Remote Pilot Certification Course presented by the Indiana State University Aviation and Unmanned Systems program • Expanded in-tree arborist demonstrations and classroom courses, including CEU opportunities • Opening keynote, “Leadership and a New World Order: The Need for Resilience,” featuring retired U.S. Navy 4-star Admiral James Stavridis • Free dealer workshops by Bob Clements International, including a discussion on “Bulletproofing Your Business” “Despite the pandemic, business never stopped for those who design, install and maintain living landscapes. While this year’s show will look different, we can’t wait to welcome everyone back to Louisville,” said Kris Kiser, managing partner of GIE+EXPO and OPEI president. “We understand how important GIE+EXPO is to our industry, and we are committed to providing the education, resources and networking businesses need to thrive.” Recently named the sixth largest trade show in the nation, GIE+EXPO is sponsored by the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute Inc. The transportation construction, labor and business community are jointly launching an ad and social media campaign to push for action this year by Congress and the Biden administration on a transportation infrastructure investment package that improves mobility and fuels economic growth. Beginning April 12, a television spot will run inside the Beltway aimed at members of Congress, staff and other policymakers. The TV commercial will be supplemented by online ads that began April 10 on social media and influential digital sites popular with D.C. legislators and influencers. The campaign will extend on April 26 with online social media and website advertisements running in the states and districts of 22 key members of Congress. The ads will run during congressional recesses. The central message of the “Moving Forward” campaign: investing in trans-
portation infrastructure is crucial to continuing the U.S. economic recovery and creating jobs. The ads direct viewers to a landing page on the Transportation Construction Coalition website where the economic benefits of transportation infrastructure investment are spelled out. The television spot and samples of the digital ads are available at FundInfrastructureNow.org. The campaign is an initiative of the Transportation Construction Coalition (TCC) and U.S. Chamber of Commerce-led Americans for Transportation Mobility (ATM) coalition. The TCC and ATM ads will run through late May. About Transportation Construction Coalition Established in 1996 and co-chaired by the American Road & Transportation Builders Association
(ARTBA) and the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC), the 31 associations and labor unions that make up the TCC have a direct market interest in the federal transportation program. A complete list of members can be found at: www.transportationconstructioncoalition.org. About Americans for Transportation Mobility (ATM) The Americans for Transportation Mobility (ATM) coalition was established by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in 2000. It brings together businesses, the labor and union sectors, transportation stakeholders and the public to advocate a robust transportation infrastructure grid in the United States. This includes promoting ongoing and sustainable funding through policies and broad-based initiatives.

Meekins Holds Retirement Auction for Currin Brothers
A
fter 49 years in business, Currin Brothers has decided to retire, and hired Meekins Auction Company, in conjunction with Sound Heavy Machinery Inc., to sell the equipment at absolute public auction. Since April 1, 1972, Currin Brothers Inc. has been providing the Raleigh, Durham, Triangle area with excavating, site prep, utilities and building construction services for the commercial and residential markets. From earth moving equipment, heavy duty trucks, trailers, or to support equipment, this auction featured some quality equipment and trucks up for sale. CEG
Kyle (L) and Hogue Cavenaugh, both of Cavenaugh Grading in Durham, N.C., were looking over the various attachments and transmissions. Justin (L) and Smitty West, both of Marion West & Son in Raleigh, N.C., came to do some shopping.
(L-R): Rick Cox, Mickey Meekins and Adrian Meeks keep the auction moving. The dozers ranged from a Cat D4H to a D9G.
Dantzlere and Glenn Currin are looking forward to spending more time in the mountains in their retirement. The auction included Cat and John Deere excavators. The well-attended auction attracted bidders from throughout the southeast and nine foreign countries via the Internet.
McCrea Wallace (L) and Senter Currin, both of Gregory Poole Equipment Company, follow the sale.
Chris (L) and Justin Rivenbark of Rivenbark Excavating in Wallace, N.C., tested out this John Deere 310G backhoe and thought it would work for their needs.
Anthony Broome (L) and Jay Sellers, both of Ironpeddlers in Raleigh, N.C., hoped to find some good deals.

Yoder & Frey Heads to Kissimmee, Fla., for May Auction
Y
oder & Frey was back at its Kissimmee, Fla., auction site on May 19. A great turnout of “regular” Yoder & Frey attendees and Southeast contractors and dealers came out on a beautiful central Florida day to bid on a terrific line up of machines, support equipment and miscellaneous lots. CEG
Yoder & Frey’s Josh Schott calls the auction and keeps it rolling at a rapid pace. Interested in a nice long-reach Doosan DX 225LC are Jordan Heidrick (in cab) and Charlie Heidrick, both of Heidrick Earthmoving Inc., Danville, Ill.
Inspecting one of several Yanmar mini-excavators in the sale is Ed Joyce, I Equip, Trucking & Warehousing, Philadelphia, Pa. Upper Midwesterners in town for some “Yoder bargains” on machines, including a nice selection of material handlers, are Josiah (L) and Ryan Bruggink of Bruggink’s Inc., Sheboygan, Wis. A crowd waits patiently as the auction truck rounds the corner to get started on auctioning of the paving products in the sale lineup.
An auction goer gives a “once over” on a unique piece in the sale lineup — a John Deere 764 Quad Track dozer. If you were looking for both full-sized or miniexcavators, this sale was the place to be.
Inspecting a Case 650L dozer of interest is Dan McHugh of Brookside Equipment Sales, Phillipston, Mass.
A pair of white Cat 908M loaders caught the attention of Carl Weese (L), C&F Enterprises, Bradenton, Fla., and Chris Mullinex, Gilliam Construction, Palmetto, Fla.

JM Wood, ALDOT Hold 25th Annual Fleet Sale
W
orking together for successful fleet management for a quarter of a century, JM Wood Auction and the Alabama Department of Transportation celebrated their 25th Annual Auction at the ALDOT fleet facility in Montgomery, Ala., in early May. This one-owner, very well-maintained fleet is always a highlight for bidders from across the country. This sale saw $9 million in sales to buyers from 19 states. “ALDOT does a tremendous job getting this machinery ready for auction,” said Russ Wood. “Their fleet management program is second to none in the U.S.” Next up for JM Wood Auction is a big regional auction event being held in Montgomery, Ala., and Anderson, Texas, on June 15 to 18. CEG
ALDOT works with a variety of dealers, representing many manufacturers, to provide a well-rounded fleet of quality machines.
Derek Johnson, JM Wood ring man, catches one last bid before the gavel drops on another piece of equipment.
Next generation JM Wood staffer Ruston Wood Jr., age 9, was impressed with the auction success.
JM Wood ALDOT sales always provide a terrific selection of late model Cat motor graders.

EFFICIENT & VERSATILE The CASE CX57C is a “large” mini excavator with best-in-class horsepower, capable of handling the demands of heavier excavation operations. Its design stands apart from the rest of the C Series line because it features a conventional tailswing design with a large counterweight, giving it power and performance comparable to a larger class – all while still taking up a relatively small footprint.
Designed for Durability and Performance. Check Out the CASE CX57C at Hills Machinery! www.hillsmachinery.com
