clear the best and most cost-effective option was a new campus, which allows us the opportunity to design a facility that reflects our customercentric culture and that takes advantage of current technology.” Knipper said the decision to locate in Johnston was not made overnight. “After a long and thoughtful search, we chose Johnston for its proximity to our headquarters in Providence, and for the convenient access for our many colleagues who live up and down the I-95 corridor.” Johnston has granted the project a tax-stabilization agreement, which has set taxes at $250,000 each year for 20 years, for a total of $5 million. Citizens and the Rhode Island Department of Transportation are splitting the cost to build a new exit and entrance ramp onto Route 295, which is expected to be complete by year’s end. But each day we are one step closer, and we are making excellent progress.” Knipper called the project a true public/private partnership. “This requires considerable planning and collaboration to ensure that everything gets done well and on time. Our colleagues are very excited about the new campus. It’s a purpose-built site with a lot of amenities, and the way we design the space will help our colleagues work more collaboratively on behalf of our customers. Many of our colleagues have embraced the Johnston community, spending time volunteering to cleanup historic cemeteries, parks and supporting the local sports teams.” The property was a wooded site with dumping grounds on the premises. AF Series 4 Wheel Steered Loaders The robust, rigid chassis with four-wheel steering is the basis for maximum stability at maximum performance because the footprint remains unchanged at all times, according to Mecalac. As a result, no tipping load loss occurs when the loader is in a steered position. A small turning radius ensures optimum agility, even on the most confined job sites. Less steering and driving motion reduces ground compaction, and the monoboom adds to the famed agility and flexibility of the loader that lets operators quickly and efficiently complete every task. Lorusso is offering the AF1050 and the AF1200 models. The Mecalac-designed monoboom stands out with two key features: • the large and bulky normal loader boom shape was converted into a sleek, elegant design offering the operator an improved view on the attachments and the work environment, which enables a comfortable and safe working environment; • the Mecalac slide roof construction protects cylinders, cables and hydraulic hoses against atmospheric conditions and dropping material, and simultaneously, the components’ service life can be increased considerably.
Inside Booster During loading, the additional compensation cylinder integrated into the monoboom can increase the lifting force by up to 30 percent. Paired with the Z-kinematics (which ensure high tear-out forces and optimum parallel lifting), the monoboom provides more power for daily work tasks without increased added fuel consumption, according to Mecalac. This power boost is particularly noticeable when lifting bulk loads. “The AX and AF Series are the perfect complement to Mecalac’s MCR skid-excavator because they are also ideal for small or large construction sites that have confined work areas, such as in landscaping or farming,” said AJ Lorusso, president of Lorusso Heavy Equipment. “We are excited to add this new series to our existing fleet, and so far, the feedback from customers has been great.” About Lorusso Heavy Equipment Located in Walpole, Mass., Lorusso Heavy Equipment (LHE) serves the Massachusetts and Rhode Island markets and beyond. In addition to Mecalac, LHE carries Hyundai construction equipment and was recently named one of the top five dealerships in the United States by Hyundai Construction Equipment America. Established in 2009, Lorusso Heavy Equipment is a family-owned and operated business, committed to serving its customers with efficient, personalized attention. CBC Recognizes New Sandy Hook School Construction The Connecticut Building Congress (CBC) will recognize the Town of Newtown, Consigli Construction Co. Inc., Svigals+Partners and STV|DPM for their collaborative work to build the new Sandy Hook School in Newtown, Conn. The team will formally accept the 2017 Project Teams Awards at a presentation on June 13. The award recognizes projects that exemplify project team excellence and represent the best practices in teamwork by project owners, architects, engineers, constructors and trades. “The powerful purpose of this project was never lost on us from day one,” said Matthew Consigli, president of Consigli. “It was truly an honor to be a partner on this special project and we couldn’t have asked for a better team. We’re humbled to receive this award and thank the CBC for this recognition.” “It was the best possible team for this unique endeavor,” said Jay Brotman, managing partner of Svigals+Partners. “And that includes First Selectman Pat Llodra and the entire Sandy Hook-Newtown community. To receive this award recognizing this three-year collaborative effort is an important honor.” “This project was the best team effort I have ever seen, with total commitment from everyone involved,” said STV|DPM vice president and project executive Mark DuPre. “We’re truly honored to be a part of such a concerted partnership.” The 88,000-sq.-ft. school for PreK-4 students opened its doors last fall, after a 32-month timeline that included extensive public engagement, careful planning and design and best-in-class construction management practices. The project was inspired by the strong sense of community and the inherent natural beauty of Newtown. The final design includes a curving plan that reaches out across the site as arms in a welcoming gesture to students. The school features three classroom wings that extend like
Construction Begins on Concord Bridges The New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) announced the rehabilitation of the I-393 eastbound and westbound bridges over Portsmouth Street in Concord. Construction began on April 11, and I-393 eastbound and westbound will be reduced to one lane in each direction at the Portsmouth Street bridges between Exits 2 and 3 for approximately two months. Motorists should expect significant delays during peak traffic periods, such as the morning and evening commuting hours. Drivers should expect stop and go traffic on I-393 during these periods, and should use alternate routes if possible. This work is a part of the road and bridge rehabilitation work on I-393 in Concord and Pembroke that includes pavement rehabilitation, bridge deck repairs, median barrier replacement, guardrail upgrades and culvert replacement. Weaver Brothers Construction Co. of Bow, N.H., is the general contractor of this $10.6 million project, which is scheduled to be completed near the end of 2017. Construction crews in Johnston, R.I., are making significant progress on a new corporate campus for Citizens Financial Group Inc. CAMPUS from page 4
make it an environmentally sound location. The 420,000-sq.-ft. corporate campus will sit on 123 acres of land that has been developed to fit with the natural environment. The campus will include dining and fitness facilities, as well as fields and trails that will be available for use by the local community. “Doors will open at the new campus in 2018,” said Knipper. “It will house more than 3,200, serving a wide range of activities, including a call center, operations and technology groups and various corporate functions.” To engage the base, a blog was launched internally, offering updates on construction. Colleagues have been allowed to comment and offer advice. The property services division also has been conducting surveys to determine preferences. Dimeo Construction serves as general contractor on the project. According to senior project manager Joseph Bolton, taking on a large area with no immediate utilities surrounded by wetlands was an early concern. “Site work and infrastructure are two big challenges for this project. The site work is a very large package, with many unknowns. Enabling the utilities to the project site is also a challenge, since over two miles of underground piping needs to be installed, and almost that distance in overhead wiring.” Crews had to remove the existing landfill and blast bedrock, which required large quantities of explosives to prepare the land for construction. Landfill removal started in May 2016, with site preparation beginning three months later. “Approximately 85,000 pounds of explosives were used to blast approximately
120,000 cubic yards of rock, said Bolton. “When completed, we will have moved approximately 550,000 cubic yards of earth.” With approximately 65 buildabile acres, crews are currently working on foundations, structural steel and more site work, including installation of drainage systems. “Everything thus far has gone very smoothly. We are working on some utilities on site, but the majority will be in full swing this spring, targeting completion by fall.” Main equipment being used on the job includes excavators, loaders, dozers and rock processing machinery. Materials include 60,000 tons of 1.5 in. rock. As for the elements, said Bolton, “Weather has been a factor, but this winter there were not big issues. Move-in should commence in August of 2018, with final completion in the fall.” Citizens Financial Group, Inc. is one of the oldest and largest financial services firms in the country. High Street Bank, founded in 1828, established Citizens Savings Bank in 1871. By 1981, Citizens had grown to 29 branches in Rhode Island, with approximately $1.0 billion of assets. In 1988, it became a wholly-owned subsidiary of the RBS Group. Citizens expanded through a number of bank acquisitions, which magnified its presence throughout New England and into the Mid-Atlantic and the Midwest. In doing so, Citizens made the move from local retail bank to one of the biggest retail U.S. bankholding companies.
