Northwestern Connecticut Community College (NCCC) will debut its new Joyner Health Science Center this fall. R.I. Leaders Celebrate Construction of New Finlays Facility Gov. Gina M. Raimondo joined elected officials and business leaders at an event celebrating the construction of Finlays new global research and development center at Quonset Business Park. Finlays is a global leader in the development and distribution of tea and coffee extracts. The project is anticipated to add 73 fulltime jobs and increase the state’s GDP by $15.3 million. Finlays new project at Quonset will include 93,000 sq.-ft. (8,640 sq m) of building space and will result in an investment of approximately $54.3 million. The project is planned to be completed in two phases. The first phase will consist of a 28,800 sq.-ft. (2,676 sq m) global research and development facility and pilot plant. The second phase will see the construction of a 65,000-sq.-ft. (6,039 sq m) fullscale manufacturing and distribution plant. “This new facility will bring Finlays products to market, but will also bring good, family-supporting jobs to Rhode Island,” Raimondo said. “Because of our hard work reinvesting in our manufacturing industries and supporting high-skill, high-wage opportunities for our residents, global leaders like Finlays want to be here and create jobs. I’m thrilled to see another business building here in Rhode Island.” “This significant investment in our infrastructure will enhance our ability to bring world-class solutions and innovative ideas to market. High-Production Excavators Fill Need for Boston-Area Firm After more than three decades in business, Metro Equipment Corporation is well-acquainted with the ups and downs of the construction industry. The current economic recovery, however, has been a little slower than normal for the family-owned company. “For us, the business only came back full strength in the last year or so,” said Rich Sullivan, who owns the Braintree, Mass., firm with his sister, Ann, and brother Owen. “There were some tough times, but right now there is plenty of work and our business is good.” The company, which started in 1986, specializes in excavation, site development and underground utilities. With the payroll back up to 40 employees and a pair of new high-production Doosan crawler excavators — a DX255LC-5 and a DX140LCR-3 — 2016 has been a good year for the Sullivans. This was evident at several job sites around the Boston area during summer and fall. 30 B Street — South Boston Three existing one-story structures were demolished to make way for a new five-story building that will include 32 condominiums and 33 onsite and offstreet parking spaces. Metro completed all excavation, drainage structures, utilities and grading. Metro’s site work included supporting the piling contractor as the shoring was installed for the underground parking garage. This required careful coordination with the general contractor and environmental engineering consultants as well as their safety procedures to ensure that contaminated soils were trucked to an appropriately licensed receiving facility. The Metro crew operated the reduced-tailswing DX140LCR-3 excavator to handle demolition and dig the footings and slab on grade. A concrete bridge abutment, which was 9 ft. (2.7 m) wide in some places, was demolished using the excavator and a hydraulic breaker. The company also installed new water, sewer, fire and drainage services. The project is scheduled for completion in spring 2017.

hydraulic breaker to remove the asphalt surface and pre-existing underground reinforced concrete foundations. Next, the excavator dug down 15 ft. (4.5 m) for the new foundation. In order to dig deep, the company had to put in shoring/wood sheeting so the foundation could be poured. Metro also installed the water, sewer and fire services to the street. Replacing Lead Water Pipes Throughout Boston Metro has a long history of working for the Boston Water and Sewer Commission doing both scheduled and emergency underground work. In recent years the focus has been on encouraging homeowners to replace the private lead pipe water service at their property. Most of the lead pipes are at least 60 years old. A four-person Metro crew with a tractor loader backhoe removed the old pipe and installed new copper pipe from the street to the structure.

Commonwealth and Glenville Apartments, Allston The rehabilitation of 17 buildings covering two city blocks in a historic district in Allston, Mass., required ongoing coordination with the general contractor because the units were occupied during the project. Transwestern Arranges Financing for Celtics’ New Facility Transwestern Consulting Group (TCG) has arranged a construction and permanent financing loan on behalf of NB Development Group for 40 Guest St. in Brighton, Mass. TCG Partner Chris Skeffington and Vice President Andrew Stone, working with NB Development Group Managing Director Jim Halliday and New Balance Treasurer Kevin Doyle, arranged the loan with East Boston Savings Bank, led by Vice President Ed Rich. Part of the Boston Landing mixed-use development, 40 Guest St. is a planned 160,000-sq.-ft. (14,864 sq m) facility that will be the home of the Boston Celtics’ new, 71,000-sq.ft. (6,596 sq m) training and practice facility. The Auerbach Center at New Balance World Headquarters is named in honor of team legend Arnold “Red” Auerbach. The building also will feature two floors of Class A laboratory and office space totaling approximately 83,500 sq. ft. (7,757 sq m) and 5,700 sq. ft. (529.5 sq m) of retail space. The project broke ground in November 2016 with completion expected in mid-2018. TCG provides leasing and property management services for Boston Landing. “NB Development Group has redefined the term ‘mixeduse’ with Boston Landing,” said Skeffington. “The development includes lab and office space, retail, residential and hotel, as well as state-of-the-art professional sports training facilities. There’s no other development like it in Greater Boston. East Boston Savings Bank has a deep appreciation for ownership’s vision for Boston Landing and has been an excellent partner in helping bring it to life.” Located minutes from downtown Boston and adjacent to New Balance’s recently completed world headquarters, Boston Landing offers a transit-oriented, urban location with the parking, green space and economic advantage of a suburban campus environment. The development includes a variety of property types, including 650,000 sq. ft. (60,387 sq m) of office/laboratory space; an NHL regulation hockey arena that serves as the Boston Bruins practice facility; a 70,000-sq.-ft. (6,503 sq m) basketball practice and training facility for the Boston Celtics; a 175-room hotel; a worldclass track and field sports center; a 295-unit residential apartment building; 80,000 sq. ft. (7,432 sq m) of amenitydriven retail; and approximately 1.4 acres of landscaped open space. In spring 2017, Boston Landing will add a newly constructed commuter rail station, providing one of the system’s quickest trips into the city as well as one of the farthest-reaching lines to the suburbs. Crews Work to Ensure Fall Opening of NCCC’s Joyner Center

The Joyner Center will open this fall at NCCC.

teaching and learning space for veterinary technicians and healthcare students at NCCC, the construction of a brand-new building and parking lot, and demolition of the existing building. Completion is scheduled for June 2017. Michael Rooke, NCCC president, stated, “I would like to acknowledge the dedication of many of our elected officials who brought this new building to reality. Now, as our new Joyner Health Science Center is being realized, I am especially excited that our veterinary technology and medical assisting students will have a state of the art building in which to learn and in due course, contribute to the economic vitality of northwestern Connecticut, for many years to come.” The first floor of the Joyner Health Science Center will contain the veterinary technology program, and the second floor will house the allied health program. The

first floor will consist of a surgical suite, an x-ray area, an animal dental area, a mock reception area, two general classrooms and a hematology laboratory. The second floor will be comprised of three allied health classrooms and a computer lab. General contractor Lawrence Brunoli Inc. of Farmington, Conn., was given notice to proceed on Dec. 2, 2015, and crews began pile driving and concrete the following spring. A ground-breaking ceremony was held on Oct. 13, 2016, at NCCC’s Founder’s Hall on campus. Brunoli has completed a wide range of public and private commercial projects since it established in 1987. Brunoli rented a Putzmeister Telebelt TB130 to get structural fill into the building. “With the high walls, there was limited access, so we shot the fill in using the Telebelt,” explained Peter Gavin, project manager of Brunoli. Brunoli rose to the challenge of the building a complex design with robust concrete and masonry requirements and will com-

plete work on schedule this June. Brunoli subcontracted electrical work to Semac Electric of New Britain, Conn.; HVAC to B-G Mechanical Contractors Inc. of Chicopee, Mass.; and plumbing to Elite Mechanical of Bristol, Conn. Marguerite Concrete, headquartered in Hopedale, Mass., also played a key role in laying the foundation for the building. The new Joyner Center, which will open this fall after moving in the program

equipment, incorporates 320 tons (290 t) of steel and 21,000 cu. yds. (16,056 cu m) of concrete. Northwestern Connecticut Community College was founded in 1965. Its student body consists of approximately 1,500 students. (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s website at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) CEG

Miller Curber Names Able Tool & Equipment Top Dealer Able Tool & Equipment received the 2016 Dealer of the Year Award by Miller Curber Co. LLC. Miller Curber has served the industry for more than 50 years manufacturing curbing machines for both commercial and landscaping use. The machines are made in the United States. This Ohio-based company has created the Miller MC Series Curbilders, which have offered unequaled performance and versatility for the placement of freestanding curb. These simple and efficient self-propelled machines operate on the extrusion principle and provide the most economical means available of constructing small to mid-sized continuous curb from either concrete or asphalt, according to the company. The company also states this process drastically reduces the high labor costs associated with hand formed and poured curb and produces high quality, extremely dense curb at a rate of up to 15 fpm (up to 30 fpm for MC900). Miller’s exclusive interchangeable extrusion auger assemblies give each

Curbilder the capacity to extrude more shapes and sizes than any machine in its class, from 3-1/2 in. (8.8 cm) to 18 in. (45.7 cm) high curb. A wide variety of options allow these machines to meet the toughest specification work. Derek Bauer, owner of Able Tool & Equipment stated, “They are an excellent company to be teamed up with. We share the same focus on customer satisfaction and support. Together, we work to serve the New England market with unprecedented quality and care.” Miller advantages: • every model will extrude concrete or asphalt with four interchangeable extrusion assemblies with auger diameters from 5 in. (12.7 cm) to 10 in. (25.4 cm) • extrude from right or left side of the machine • place curb within 1 in. (2.5 cm) of an obstacle • extrude steel rod through the curb center (optional hollow auger assembly) • extrude over pins (optional form) • two-piece 5 in. and 6 in.

(15.2 cm) cast auger allowing four separate wear surfaces for extended life • easy access and removal of all extrusion components for maintenance and quick clean-up • nearly 2,000 curb choices with custom shapes available at no additional cost Able Tool & Equipment, located in South Windsor, Conn., and Springfield, Mass., supports local contractors in the concrete, excavating, highway and utility arena with its array of light and compact equipment inventory. Able has an onsite parts and service staff. They also are a dealer of Wacker Neuson, Mustang, Husqvarna, Gorman-Rupp, E-Z Drill, Sullair, Diamond Products/Core Cut saws and blades, ICS Diamond chainsaws, Bartell Equipment, trowels, screeds, blades and pans, and more. Road playground for Boston Parks Department; and Esplanade Spray Deck for Massachusetts Department of Conservation & Recreation (DCR). Metro completed all of the excavation, grading and concrete work. Metro typically removes the old facilities and installs a new rubber surface, a drainage system, spray features and playground equipment. Metro acts as the general contractor and works closely with the owner and landscape architects to help install the designs. “Bidding is real tight when work is scarce,” Sullivan said. “You really have to know what you are doing and have productive equipment, such as our two new excavators, to secure and handle this type of highprofile job.” To be able to take on the additional volume of work in 2016, Metro purchased two new Doosan excavators from Equipment East, the Doosan equipment dealer in the Boston area. “We’ve used many different brands of equipment during the 30 years we have been in business,” Sullivan said. “During that time, we’ve come to believe that there are a lot of good machines on the market. When we looked at Doosan, we found another topof-the-line manufacturer.” As a first-time buyer, Sullivan thoroughly researched the Doosan brand and liked what he discovered. “The company is one of the biggest equipment manufacturers in the

world,” he said. “The fact that Doosan is very substantial is important to us. Plus, our mechanic and operators gave a thumbs-up when they tested the excavators.” To keep up with the workload at the end of last year, the Sullivans decided to replace two aging excavators with the DX255LC-5 and DX140LCR-3. Both units bring three different-size buckets, an optional quick coupler and a hydraulic breaker to each job site. “In addition to being a very good value, I liked all the features that came standard, such as the air suspension seat, rearview camera and Doosan telematics,” Sullivan said. “We’ve used the machines at a variety of job sites, both big and small. They are very productive.” That turned out to be a very good attribute this year (and no doubt will continue to be in the future as well). When asked what it was like as the volume of work increased, Sullivan said it was a welcomed challenge. “For us, that’s not unusual. Working for contractors on tightly scheduled projects, you learn to be ready and to be flexible. We’ve got the right people and the right equipment to do what’s necessary to handle the work and get the job done”. For more information, visit DoosanEquipment.com.
