National Trench Safety Opens New Boston Operation National Trench Safety LLC (NTS), a Houston-based company specializing in the rental and sales of trench and traffic safety equipment, trench and traffic safety engineering, and OSHA-compliant training classes, announced the opening of a new branch operation in Boston. “We’re extremely pleased to be able to announce the expansion of our national footprint into the Northeast,” said Ron Chilton, president of NTS. “Boston is generally regarded as one of the top 10 cities in the United States and has a significant amount of planned infrastructure growth and refurbishment work over the next few years. It’s a unique market in terms of the shoring utilized and one that we think is a great fit for our site specific engi-

neered systems and complimentary product lines.” The new NTS Boston branch will be managed by Rick Buck, a seasoned trench safety specialist with a long history in the Boston market. “Rick is an extremely qualified, very technical trench safety veteran with a long track record of success in the market,” Chilton said. “Rick has significant experience working on some of the largest jobs in the Boston trade area over the last decade. Rick also has a dedicated customer following which we expect will enable him to make a seamless transition back into the market with NTS, as we look forward to establishing NTS as the premier shoring partner in the greater Boston market.” The Boston operation is the 30th branch location for

National Trench Safety in the United States. This large national foot print allows NTS to provide its national, regional and local market customers a fully integrated, national branch network delivering unique engineered solutions, the highest level of customer service and the most cost effective shoring solutions in the industry, according to the company. In maintaining its objective of building a nationwide network of trench and traffic safety branches, NTS plans to open several additional branch locations in 2017. Maine Water Company Outlines Capital Investment Plans As it wrapped up its 2016 capital projects, Maine Water has announced another robust capital plan for 2017. The company will invest $8.7 million in various Maine communities, to continue replacing aging infrastructure. Almost $5 million is designated for aging water mains and other components in distribution systems that Maine Water maintains. “Proactively replacing infrastructure improves reliability and water quality, and reduces lost water through leaks and breaks,” said Judy Wallingford, Maine Water’s president.

“We’ll make sure to coordinate this work closely with road work and wastewater system upgrades in the municipalities we serve. Shared economies of scale can save the towns’ taxpayers, and the water company’s customers, on paving and other construction costs.” In addition to its aggressive schedule of water main replacement, Maine Water has almost $2 million budgeted in 2017 for the design and permitting of a new water treatment facility in Biddeford on the Saco River. The current treatment facility is on the flood plain of the Saco River, and was

built more than 130 years ago, in 1884. The new facility will be built on a parcel of land recently acquired on South Street that is well out of the river’s flood plain. It will be a modern facility, energy and process efficient, and will have expandable capacity to serve the growing Southern Maine region. Maine Water’s capital investment plan for 2017 is more than what the company spent in 2016, when it invested $7.4 million to improve service, water quality and reliability across its 10 divisions in the state. That included almost $5 million in upgrading old water mains and other related infrastructure, some dating back to the late 1800s. Wallingford said the Maine chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers recently issued its updated report on the condition of infrastructure across all sectors in Maine, giving a grade of C+ for the infrastructure of all of the water utilities, including municipal and privately owned, in Maine. “That reflects the advanced age of water systems throughout the northeast United States. Good infrastructure supports our communities, so we are committed to making these investments,” Wallingford said. “We are adding construction jobs as our work is under way, and upgrading these public water systems to support the future needs of the communities, including pubic health, safety and economic development and the wise use of our natural water resources.” Maine Water serves 32,000 customers, or a population of 100,000, in more than 20 communities throughout the state of Maine. Developer Hires Local Firms for Burlington Town Center

Construction is expected to commence in the first half of 2017.

Devonwood Investors LLC, owner and developer of the Burlington Town Center (BTC), announced that it has retained local firms as a part of its development team to move forward the Burlington Town Center redevelopment project. These firms collectively employ hundreds of individuals skilled in architecture, engineering, permitting, construction management and related areas. Following the favorable city-wide vote on Nov. 8, 2016 to affirm new zoning standards for a portion of the downtown that includes the Burlington Town Center, the redevelop-

ment project has moved quickly to finalize retention of its development team and to complete work required for city permitting. Construction is expected to commence in the first half of 2017. “[This] announcement demonstrates the immediate benefit of the voters’ decision on November 8 to support the Burlington Town Center redevelopment,” said Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger. “Devonwood’s selection of local design, construction, and consulting firms to help carry out this project is a tribute to the considerable talent in our see BURLINGTON page 18

Crews Will Finish Stackpole Restoration in Late Spring

with precast T-wall and face the precast wall with the original stones. “It will be like a masonry veneer that will marry into the arch with a stone exterior on either side,” Laverriere said. The primary challenge on the project is that work must be performed in a fairly tight space.

Seven years ago, Inga Browne and several of her neighbors received notices from the city of Saco, Maine, that a unique historic bridge near their homes was to be replaced by a new structure.

“Just due to nature of site — it’s a narrow streambed,” said Laverriere. “The topography is incised in a drainage ravine. There’s just not a lot of room. The contractor is working in the road itself with two large excavators. This is a project that someone might have used a crane for, but because of the limited space, they thought it might have been more difficult. It’s very tight down there.”

The road has been closed, but the goal is to get one lane open by the end of January 2017. Crews with CPM Constructors will return in May to finish the project. “This is a fascinating story with twists and turns,” Browne said. “We were just so sure we could get the bridge rehabilitated for close to the same price. That idea allowed the push to save the bridge to go on longer. There were several nail-biter votes where

councilors voted not to investigate rehabilitating the bridge. It really was like a soap opera. When all is said and done, the city of Saco and a lot of townspeople are going to be proud of this bridge. It will be a point of pride.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s website at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) CEG
