“The Interceptor” might bring up visions of an all-league defender who steals passes for one of the city’s professional sports franchises. To see the real interceptor in action, city residents would have to go where
they don’t want to go, to see what they don’t want to see. They would have to open a large sewer manhole near the South Street Seaport and clamber 30 ft. down a shaft with the sound of sewers bubbling.
New York City’s interceptor does not wear a sparkling uniform; instead, the interceptor is a
vault-like concrete box that intercepts sewers from around the city and channels the sewer safely into the municipal water treatment facility. Recently, the city’s star interceptor was close to being benched. The concrete chamber’s walls were crumbling and badly in need of repair. Rain

Scaling Personal Safety Gear
Construction Job Sites Showcasing Evolution in PPE Products
By Lucy Perry CEG CORRESPONDENT
Two big factors in the personal protection equipment sector’s evolution are women and smart technology. PPE manufacturers are better designing equipment for women. And as smart gear and connected devices become more mainstream on construction sites, the PPE market is taking the construction sector along as it advances. But the construction industry can do more, say safety organizations. They’ve asked OSHA to update longstanding PPE standards.
The International Safety Equipment Association (ISEA) is among eight national safety organizations see GEAR page 28
Contractors who know the value of comfortable and safe workers will take the time to learn their employees’ PPE needs by listening to them and observing how they wear PPE gear and use smart devices on the job site.

Shirley Contracting Works On Fairfax County Parkway
By Chuck MacDonald CEG CORRESPONDENT
With approximately 1.1 million residents, Fairfax County is the most populous county in Virginia and encompasses thriving towns like Reston, Tysons, Herndon, Vienna, Chantilly and McLean. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has several road-building projects active there, designed to keep the traffic flowing with minimal interruptions.
The Fairfax County Parkway (SR 286) plays a central role in this bundle of projects VDOT has planned to reduce congestion and enhance safety. The Parkway snakes across the county, intersecting with other important highways and secondary roads to keep the county’s road warriors on the move.
One of the current projects is part of a three-phase plan to widen the Parkway from four lanes to six lanes between Nomes Court and Route 123 (also known as Ox Road). This 2-mi. long project will impact a critical corridor for residents traveling from the north end of the county near the Potomac River to I-95 and Springfield in the south.
Shirley Contracting Company, located in nearby Lorton, is leading the work. The job will cost approximately $126 million and should ease the congestion for the 77,000 motorists who use this road daily.
Shirley has deployed dozers and excavators in the early stages of the work for tree removal and excavating dirt and rock to make room for the new lane for southbound travel. Shirley will be using drone flights to map the cut-to-fill status and Universal Total Station (UTS) for machine grade control.
As in other construction projects, Shirley will reuse excavated material whenever possible. The construction team will use cement treated aggregate from the demolished pavement as base for the new lane and for embankments. Shirley also is building new stormwater drains for the project.
Workers will handle a considerable amount of materials in the construction,
including:
• 9,000 cu. yds. of concrete
• 99,000 tons of aggregate
• 120,000 tons of asphalt
• 113,000 cu. yds. of cut material
• 600,000 lbs. of steel H pile
• 600,000 lbs. of reinforcing steel
Project designers have gone to great lengths to provide safe access for pedestrians
using a shared-use path adjacent to the Parkway. Planners also had to account for the Norfolk Southern Railroad that runs below the Parkway. The team is meeting this challenge by building retaining walls wrapping both sides of the Parkway at the bridge that will be widened over the railway. The walls will be up to 30 ft. tall and will be built

events and water gushing via cracks, fissures and gaping holes inside the sewer from the nearby East River compromised the tunnel and threatened partial sewer line collapse and overflows.
New York City Department of Design and Construction (DDC) took on the project, which became more complex as the DDC team and contractors studied the issue. The team was led by Iyad Marzouq, assistant commissioner of DDC’s Infrastructure Division, and Bishoy Sourial, resident engineer. The contracting team was led by David Beesley of Coppola Services in Ringwood, N.J.
Many projects of this nature would use a “cut and cover” approach, which could include rerouting traffic for many weeks. This would give workers plenty of room to safely access the sewer with the appropriate machinery.
However, none of these normal steps were acceptable. The sewer is in a busy area where hordes of tourists walk to the South Street Seaport in the summer. Also, planners had inadequate space to relocate to nearby roads. In addition, large bridge supports for the Franklin D. Roosevelt East River Drive are located nearby. Relocating the multiple underground utilities from the tunnel also seemed impossible.
After months of strategy sessions, planning and researching, the team came up with an elegant solution. The strategy had not been used in a NYC sewer before and ended up costing only $29 million while completed in just under two years.
The planning team, including NYC DEP, used a process that employed equipment that could create the equivalent of a PVC pipe inside the sewer, without moving utilities. The
machinery also could do its magic without being deterred by water and without using chemicals.
“All of the traditional means of rehabilitating a sewer pipe were unsuitable for this project,” said Marzouq.
Often used CIPP, cured-in-place-pipe lining, requires a completely dry working surface inside the sewer to work, which was not possible in these types of sewers. Slip lining (aka jack and bore) needed a jacking and receiving pits dug up 30 ft. deep on each side of the existing sewers, which also was not feasible. It also is designed to work for circular pipes, so it will result in 40 percent flow capacity loss if inserted inside this rectangular sewer. Shotcrete method, which sprays a special concrete mix around the inside of the sewer pipe, was tried and failed previously. New gushers and cracks continued to form as soon as work was done.
The design team discovered a method known as Spiral Wound Lining, offered by SEKISUI SPR as the answer to construction in such a confined space. Using this trenchless equipment and method saved time and kept inconvenience at a minimum for people in the city’s financial district.
The equipment was lowered in pieces 30 ft. below street level through an existing sewer manhole. Workers then assembled the winding machine at the proper position. Motors, bearings and gears were calibrated so the equipment could rotate the SPR material around the circumference of the interceptor sewer. Project planners carefully set up the machine to ensure a safe environment for workers in the interceptor area.

NAM Visits Komatsu South Harbor Facility as Part of 2026 Tour
The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) brought its “2026 NAM State of Manufacturing Tour” to Komatsu’s South Harbor (Milwaukee) manufacturing facility highlighting “the vital role that manufacturing plays in supporting the nation’s economy.”
The manufacturing operation at this facility primarily serves the mining industry, while the adjoining office building serves as one of the manufacturer’s two North American headquarters for staff serving construction, mining and forestry interests.
It also serves as a brand experience center where visitors can explore everything from Komatsu’s mining heritage to its “Pattern Shop” brand store that features everything from baseball hats and models to vintage P&H gear (Komatsu acquired the P&H brand as part of its 2017 acquisition of Joy Global).
The visit highlighted Komatsu’s strengths as a manufacturing force in North America, and its continued investment in North American jobs and infrastructure. The equipment manufactured at South Harbor supports the production of essential minerals that power modern life, from copper used in electrical infrastructure and electric vehicles, to iron ore that forms the backbone of bridges, buildings and transportation networks.
As global demand for critical minerals increases to support energy transition, digital connectivity and infrastructure development, advanced mining technology plays a foundational role in enabling progress.
“As a stop on the NAM’s State of Manufacturing Tour, this facility is a blueprint for how to highlight the strengths of manufacturing in America, while also demonstrating the real human and societal impact manufacturers have around the world,” said Jay Timmons, NAM president and CEO. “Komatsu has made strong and intentional strides in growing its manufacturing and support footprint in North America, and this facility and its people are a testament to how a traditional manufacturing town like Milwaukee carries pride in U.S. manufacturing around the globe.”
“The work that the NAM does in elevating the profile of the manufacturing industry in North America and advocating for our interests on every stop of this tour, is invaluable,” said Rod Bull, CEO of Komatsu North America. “At Komatsu, we take pride in hard work, quality craftsmanship and the role we play in building infrastructure and communities from the ground up — we’ve done it for more than 100 years, and we’ll keep pushing for another 100 with great partners like the NAM, our dealer network and the great people who put our equipment to work every day.”
Crews Achieve Sewer Rehab Without Disrupting Streets
INTERCEPTOR from page 20
Rerouting the Sewer Flow
According to Mazouq, “The existing live sewer flow needed to be reduced considerably to allow for safe working space for the workers, so five large submersible pumps were utilized underwater to divert just enough flow inside the interceptor sewer upward through the manhole and under the street pavement to a neighboring combined sewer manhole 30 feet away via a combination of manifolds, risers, valve, pipes, and other fittings by-pass system.”
“Many things were unusual about this project, including the need for fully equipped divers to install the submersible pumps at the start of the project,” he added.
Workers could then begin using the Spiral Wound Lining equipment to begin building a liner through a continuous winding process. Workers were building a pipe inside a pipe. The machine installs the profile that is fed from a spool at the top of the manhole by winding it around the circumference of the existing pipe and interlocking the profile as it pushes forward in a zipper like mechanism.
The construction team used grout to fill the voids left between the existing sewer concrete wall and the new PVC lined wall. This process also increased the structural strength of the new sewer structure.
“Our construction team has fixed about 1,050 feet of pipe with reinforced PVC,” said Marzouq. “This has all been
accomplished without street closures and traffic detours. Traffic volumes were not affected, and the community did not feel much inconvenience.”
Marzouq summarized the effect of his team’s work on the 1960s-era interceptor.
“The potential risks of flooding have been reduced, and
we have found an innovative way to extend the lifespan of the interceptor. I believe that with this project, DDC has found new means to efficiently maintain the city’s infrastructure while keeping costs and disruptions to a minimum.”

Groups Urge OSHA to Modernize Outdated PPE Standards
that petitioned OSHA to update the standards.
ISEA noted that many of OSHA’s PPE regulations reference consensus standards dating back decades, some as far back as 1989. Yet “significant advancements in safety science, materials and testing methods” have been adopted by the industry.
“Updating these references will help ensure workers benefit from the latest innovations in PPE while maintaining flexibility for employers,” said the groups.
They want OSHA to update regulatory references for standards specific to eye and face protection, occupational head protection, and workplace first aid kits.
“Together, these standards affect more than 125 million Americans who rely on PPE and emergency safety equipment every day to stay safe on the job,” they said.
Updated standards cover enhanced impact testing, clearer product markings, expanded protection from biological hazards and updated first aid guidance. These updates reflect today’s workplace risks, believe the eight safety organizations.
“Safety regulations should reflect the best knowledge and protective practices available today,” said Cam Mackey, ISEA president and CEO.
Updating these references is a straightforward step OSHA can take to ensure its regulations keep pace with innovation, he said.
They’ll allow the agency to also “support the safety science and practices already widely used across industry,” he added.
The group announcement said the petition stresses that updating incorporated references to current consensus will enhance worker protection. It also will align OSHA regulations with industry best practices and impose no additional regulatory costs. In fact, the updates would simply replace outdated references with the most recent editions of widely used consensus standards.
These standards already guide the design, testing and performance of protective equipment used across U.S. workplaces, said the organizations.
Besides the ISEA, those organizations supporting the petition:
• American Association of Occupational Health Nurses (AAOHN)
• ABSA International Association for Biosecurity and Biosecurity
• American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA)
• American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP)
• Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP)
• Institute of Hazardous Materials
Management (IHMM)
• National Safety Council (NSC)
• The Vision Council
ASSP said its participation reflects a longstanding support for voluntary consensus standards and the role they play in advancing worker protection.
“The society has long emphasized the importance of aligning workplace safety regulations with current consensus standards,” said the organization.
These standards “reflect the collective expertise of safety professionals across industry, government, labor and academia.”
The standards ensure workplace safety guidance reflects current knowledge, emerging risks and evolving technology, ASSA added.
“OSHA has long recognized the value of voluntary consensus standards as an important tool for supporting effective and practical workplace safety protections.”
ASSP values partnership with OSHA and supports collaborative efforts to ensure workplace safety rules reflect current knowledge and best practices, it added.
Scaling Safety Gear to Fit Worker
Safety science and technology are evolving to meet the growing number of female workers in the construction workplace.
In fact, today women make up almost 48 percent of the workforce. Adequate PPE is a must to ensure their safety on the job, said
Wyatt Bradbury of Avetta.
Principal, health and safety, of the regulatory compliance consultant, he said the sector has advanced from “shrink it and pink it” to women-specific gear.
In an article for Ohsline.com, Bradbury pointed to high-visibility garments; footwear; and hearing, head, hand and eye protection as evidence of the evolution.
This gear designed for the unique needs of women, he said, is available from a variety of distributors.
The 2023 Guidance of PPE for Women ANSI and ASSP was a key contributor to the improvements, said Bradbury.
“However, despite the availability of these products, the problems women face regarding PPE in the workplace persist.”
Safety officer Mike Harry said industries with strict smart PPE protocols have seen injury reductions of 30 percent to 70 percent. These numbers demonstrate the real-world value of these innovations, he said, but widespread adoption of smart PPE still faces hurdles.
Common challenges include cost barriers. Smart equipment is more expensive upfront than traditional PPE, said Harry in an ohsonline.com article.
Worker discomfort is another issue with smart technology, he added. Sensors and electronics can feel bulky or restrictive, especially to women.
Training gaps can happen.
“Workers need guidance on how to properly use and maintain the technology,” he said.
Finally, employees can have data privacy concerns. Harry noted that with continuous monitoring, companies must manage sensitive worker data responsibly.
“To overcome these issues, organizations are increasingly adopting pilot programs to test smart PPE in small groups before scaling,” he said. “Coupling technology with robust worker education helps maximize safety without overwhelming employees.”
Bradford said it took his seeing an employee wearing ill-fitting equipment to engage the safety committee, multiple vendors and distributors to drive change.
“Unfortunately, it seems that many employers are waiting for a similar hands-on experience to finally make a change,” he said.
Addressing Needs of Everyone
He outlines six steps for employers willing to wake up to the PPE needs of all their workers, especially female employees, starting with identifying the problem.
To understand the state of available PPE in the workplace, he said, talk to the women who are using PPE daily.
“Ask if it fits, meets their needs or if there is anything that can be done to make it easier
Industry groups are lobbying OSHA to update longstanding PPE standards to reflect today’s consensus policies for safe device and equipment usage. Adobe Stock
Technology Advances Available Connected Devices, Gear
to work safely while using PPE,” said Bradbury. “Find out if there are specific instances when adjustments are always needed, if it seems to become an inconvenience or ultimately fails.”
The employees wearing PPE will know what works and what doesn’t, he added. Contractors also might observe how people are working in PPE.
“Often, if the PPE doesn’t look like it fits, is constantly being adjusted or does not seem to be functioning properly, it probably isn’t,” said Bradbury.
Studying various situations and tasks offers the observer an idea of where PPE may be missing, not identified or not being used.
It becomes an opportunity to really explore why. “Here, fit [or lack thereof] may be a factor,” said Bradbury.
Contractors also should look through records such as fit testing, to see where issues have arisen in the past.
“Look at workers’ compensation claims and injury reports to see where improperly fitting PPE may have contributed to injury or illness,” he said. “Use the lagging data to determine where issues exist and where to be proactive to address hazards that PPE has been less effective at controlling.”
The issue may be the PPE itself. The contractor should work with those employees to help obtain equipment that better suits their needs and body structure.
“Remember that PPE is ultimately about your workers’ protection; ensure it suits them,” Bradbury added.
Step two, he said, is to engage as many interested employees who have relevant input as possible in discussion about the issue.
“Don’t isolate it to just female employees or a specific subset of your worker population.”
Create a list of challenges or must-haves and required changes, even beyond just fit. “Use this as a chance to drive utility, efficiency and comfort,” he said.
Step three, include vendors, distributors and manufacturers in the conversation.
Have providers talk with procurement teams, operational leaders risk management, health and safety committees and front-line workers.
Bradbury suggests learning about new products on the market and how to obtain samples to distribute for feedback and testing among the female workforce.
“Use them as a force multiplier to solve as many challenges as you have related to PPE.”
Try out samples in real-world scenarios, stress test and collect expanded feedback as step four in the process.
“This can help identify other areas of opportunity to improve your safety and health systems,” said Bradbury.
Contractors should feedback on as many products from as many female employees as are available.
“The more time spent testing, the higher the likelihood of challenges being proactively identified and solutions being implemented,” he added.
Step five, encourage employees to own the decision and know it represents the feedback they’ve shared.
“Once the decision is made, implement the new approach that recognizes the unique PPE considerations of women in the workplace,” said Bradbury. Finally, don’t stop here, he said. Contractors should keep looking for opportunities to continually improve and use what they’ve learned.
“Apply it to make health and safety protection enhancements for all employees throughout your organization.”
In the construction industry PPE gear, especially for women, has improved significantly in recent years. But availability alone isn’t the best solution.
“As the last line of defense against workplace hazards, PPE must fit the people who rely on it,” said Bradbury. “That means employers need to actively evaluate programs, listen to workers, and commit to solutions that truly meet everyone’s needs.” CEG

Wirtgen Presents New Large W 250 XF Milling Machine
With the new W 250 XF, Wirtgen presents a machine with milling performance and low specific emissions. It is available as of now in the United States, Australia, Europe, Japan and Taiwan.
Dual-Engine Drive System Controlled By Mill Assist for Maximum Performance
The engine power output of the new large milling machine has been increased by more than 20 percent compared with its predecessor. The active dual power dualengine drive makes the milling machine even more powerful and versatile in use. The two 18-L John Deere engines can deliver a combined peak power output of 900 kW.
Wirtgen and John Deere worked in close collaboration on the fine tuning of the torque characteristic of the engines to meet the specific needs of the cold milling process. Both diesel engines already deliver high torque at low engine speeds. The

improved torque characteristic guarantees lower fuel consumption and fast, productive work, even at the machine’s maximum milling depth, according to Wirtgen.
The integrated mill assist machine control system regulates the power output of the two engines according to demand to ensure the most efficient use of the machine,
the most favorable working balance between performance and costs. It also allows the selection of three different working strategies that optimize the process with regard to costs, performance or quality. The W 250 XF demonstrates its full potential especially in “performance-optimized” mode. There is a choice of three different engine power combination modes that can be selected to meet the requirements of specific milling tasks.
For example, only one engine is used when removing concrete or brittle materials. When the task demands the removal of a surface layer and high surface quality, the second engine is cut in and operates in the part load range. In combination mode no. 3, both engines operate synchronously and deliver the maximum combined power output of 900 kW. As both engines are generally operated within the low speed range, their fuel consumption is correspondingly low. The large milling machine impresses with high daily output rates in applications on freeways, federal highways, airports and other major construction projects.

Vögele Pavers Can Handle Extreme Requirements On Asphalt, Paving Jobs
Whenever the town of Brno is mentioned, motor racing fans get excited.
Races have been held here since 1930. After a few rather subdued years, the course is now back to its former glory. Both the infrastructure and the carriageway have been renovated. Riders are enthused about the special asphalt, made in a Benninghoven plant and paved by three Vögele pavers and material feeders.
International race tracks have particularly stringent requirements for evenness, grip and a homogeneous texture, amongst other factors. Maximum grip and consistent evenness are key — as is the safety of riders travelling at speeds of around 200 mph. All 3.35 mi. of the Masaryk Circuit were resurfaced: three Vögele pavers and material feeders paved a 1-in. thick level-regulating course and a 1.6-in. thick surface course across an average width of 49 ft. — on the Start/Finish straights, this width increased to as much as 56 ft.
Stringent Requirements, Little Time
Apart from the precise specifications for both asphalt material and paving process, the paving team managed by David Tejkal, construction manager of general contractor Strabag a.s., faced another challenge.
“We had a strict deadline,” he said. “The track had to be handed over two months before the Grand Prix.” This meant a very short preparation period of just four weeks. The team could only work during the day, So 50 workers and 5 engineers were on site each day. “The tight schedule demanded precise coordination between all those involved — as well as utterly reliable, high-performance machinery,” said Tejkal.
Special Asphalt Material
The first task was to find the perfect asphalt material to deliver the ideal carriageway surface: better grip, faster, safer. Consulting engineers Hart Consult drafted a resurfacing concept for the track.
“Among other things, we drafted project-specific specifications for all raw materials, asphalt composition, processes and quality assurance which were also agreed with FIM, the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (International Motorcycling Federation) and we monitored the implementation of those specifications on site,” said Mario Peiker, managing director and technical director of Hart Consult International GmbH. Any deviation from these specifications would potentially impact performance and safety. The special asphalt was produced in a Benninghoven BA 4000 asphalt mixing plant from Brnenska Obalovna/Strabag.
Smart Weighing System for Consistent Asphalt Quality
The smart weighing system from Benninghoven proved ideal for this project. It has no sensors and teaches itself to dose at maximum efficiency and to minimum tolerances — even under varying conditions such as fluctuating temperatures or differing proportions of white mineral. The system reacts to the flow of material in real time, creating the conditions for managing the formula precisely — something which would be almost impossible using conventional methods. This renders the smart weighing system valuable wher-
ever extremely low formula tolerances are required — such as in this project, where any deviation from the specifications would have an impact on performance and safety.
In order to be able to use the smart weighing system, however, the first step was to integrate the latest version of the mixing plant control system, BLS 4 from Benninghoven in the existing BA 4000 from Brnenska Obalovna. This control unit conversion also was completed in double-quick time as a result of close collaboration between Benninghoven, Hart Consult and Strabag.
“It was really impressive to see how the new control software benefitted production precision. As we reduced production tolerances by almost 50 percent compared to national standards, these specifications could only be maintained using a perfectly calibrated mixing plant,” said Peiker.
Even Flow of Material, Seamless Paving
The special asphalt had to be paved without interruptions and without any loss of temperature in order to satisfy the stringent quality requirements. This was taken care of by precisely harmonied logistics: thermally-insulated trucks delivered the material straight to three Vögele MT 3000-2i standard type material feeders. They took on the load in the shortest possible time and continuously conveyed material to the Vögele pavers. In the process, the sensor-controlled conveyor belt heating of the material feeders ensured that the asphalt arrived at the pavers without any heat loss.
Paving itself was implemented by the hot-to-hot method to achieve a seamless surface, otherwise the high shear forces on the race track would very soon force open any joints. Three pavers of the Super 1800-3i type worked on parallel carriageways with a slight offset — across the full carriageway width of 49 ft. to 56 ft. Hot-to-hot paving ensured optimum bonding and a water-impermeable, stable and durable carriageway surface.
System of Sensors Ensures Maximum Evenness
To ensure precision maintenance of longitudinal evenness, the team used the Niveltronic Plus system for automated grade and slope control in combination with the Big MultiPlex Ski. Three multi-cell sonic sensors were fitted to the brackets to scan the roadbase of the level-regulating course and the surface course at several points simultaneously. The system for automated grade and slope control used these measurements to calculate an average value over the entire measuring range, compensating even extended irregularities. The AB 500 TV extending screed (with tamper and vibrators as compacting systems) secured a high degree of precompaction, leading to a high-quality surface. The result was a homogeneous, even asphalt surface course with the optimum texture — ideal for a race track.
On-Time Completion
Despite the challenging schedule, this project was completed on time. In just four weeks, a total of around 14,000 tons of asphalt material were paved at Brno Circuit. The whole track was inspected and approved by the authorities, So motor racing fans can once again look forward to lots of great racing in Brno.

JCB Introduces Two New Machines to Its Compact Lineup; Promises More in ’26
For rental companies and residential contractors, the most important machine on the yard is often the one that does almost everything.
JCB has introduced two new compact machines designed around that reality: the 250T compact track loader and the 25Z miniexcavator.
With the 250T, JCB brings its single-arm boom design to the most indemand skid steer size class. Built for rental fleets and residential job sites, the 250T delivers the power, lift capacity and compact maneuverability this segment requires. It delivers strong grading and materialhandling performance with a towable design that keeps crews moving efficiently between job sites, according to JCB.
Performance Built
Strong lift capacity meets practical transportability in the 250T. A 74 hp engine powers the machine to a rated operating capacity of 2,429 lbs., delivering the
muscle needed for loading trucks, handling palletized materials and tackling demanding site work. But capability doesn’t come at the expense of maneuverability. The 250T has an operating weight of 9,870 lbs., allowing it to be towed behind a 3/4-ton pickup truck without requiring a CDL. Crews can move from job to job without waiting on specialized transport, keeping schedules tight and downtime low, according to JCB.
In addition, 15.7-in.-wide tracks and a ground bearing pressure of less than 5 psi provide stability and traction while helping protect prepared or finished surfaces. The compact footprint supports maneuverability in tight spaces, while standard and high-flow hydraulic options give operators the flexibility to run a wide range of attachments.
And, with the JCB singlearm boom design, the 250T is the only option in this class size offering side-door entry and 270-degree visibility from the operator’s seat.
More Compact Options
JCB also introduced its new 25Z mini-excavator, which enters the 2-to-3-ton

SEPPI M. Introduces E10 direct Forestry Mulcher Made for Compact Excavators
SEPPI M. introduces the E10 direct, a compact forestry mulcher engineered specifically for mini-excavators in the 2.5–6-ton class. Designed to deliver maximum performance with minimal weight, the E10 direct allows operators to maintain stability, precision and safety — even at full reach.
At the core of the machine is a direct-drive system, where the hydraulic gear motor is coupled directly to the rotor. This streamlined design eliminates belts and reduces wear components, resulting in higher efficiency, lower maintenance and a more compact overall structure. The integrated drainless system requires only a pressure line and a return line, making the unit especially suitable for smaller excavators or mixed fleets without dedicated case drain lines.
The E10 direct can mulch brush, vegetation and wood up to 4 in. in diameter. Its cut control rotor system, equipped with mini blade v-lock tools as standard — or optional mini duo tools for extended durability — ensures consistent cutting depth, fast material processing and a clean finish across a wide range of conditions, according to the company.
Versatility is a key advantage. With a universal attachment interface and optional custom mounting plates, the E10 direct can be easily adapted to a variety of excavator brands and configurations. Optional features such as a
190-degree hydraulic rotation plate further enhance maneuverability and allow operators to work efficiently in tight or complex environments, according to the company.
This flexibility makes the E10 direct an ideal solution for a wide range of applications, including roadside and ditch maintenance; vegetation control along trails and utility corridors; park and green space maintenance; and work in orchards, vineyards and young forest stands.
Built with high-tensile, wear-resis-
tant AR400 steel and equipped with reinforced skids and replaceable wear parts, the E10 direct is designed to withstand demanding jobsite conditions while maintaining long service life, according to SEPPI M.
For contractors and operators looking to maximize the productivity of their compact excavators, the E10 direct delivers a powerful combination of performance, adaptability and ease of use.

“One of the major drivers of our loader evolution is accelerating the pace of innovation across our lineup,” said Brad Claus, Bobcat senior vice president of North America construction equipment. “With our
shift from series to categories, we will release innovations more frequently at the model level, without waiting for an entirely new series to launch. And with new technologies in place, we can deliver meaningful updates to customers more often.”
Building on this evolution, Bobcat is introducing new integrated technology options designed to further simplify operation, elevate jobsite awareness and help operators of every skill level work more confidently and efficiently.
Bobcat’s Newest Technology Options
Bobcat is expanding its portfolio of smart, operator-focused solutions with Jobsite Companion, the first AI-enabled solution in the compact equipment industry, and its new jobsite awareness suite of operator-awareness tools powered by camera- and radarbased technologies.
Jobsite Companion
Available as an option on pro loaders in the United States, Jobsite Companion simplifies machine operation with voice commands, automated attachment settings and real-time jobsite insights — allowing operators to keep hands on the controls while automating more than 50 machine functions. Its built-in job cost dashboard turns hours into insight by tracking operation cost compared to job estimates to improve profit.
Jobsite Awareness Systems
Available as optional features on pro load-
ers in the United States and Canada, Bobcat is introducing operator-awareness technology options through camera- and radar-based systems.
Bobcat View camera options are available on pro loaders, offering either a rear view or a broad-area view that covers the rear and sides of the machine.
Bobcat also is introducing Bobcat Sense detection systems, which offers two additional detection options:
• Rear object detection and avoidance: A radar-based system that detects objects and people behind the machine and can alert the operator or automatically slow or stop the loader.
• 360 people detection: This camerabased system identifies and alerts operators to the presence of people around the machine without intervening in machine motion.
These technologies provide added awareness on demanding job sites, giving operators more information to maneuver confidently and stay focused on the job.
“This launch isn’t just about new machines, it’s about how people work,” said Claus. “By giving operators more choice, more control and smarter technology, we’re building equipment that adapts alongside the workforce and the job sites of tomorrow.”
The newly enhanced loader models will be available at select North American dealerships beginning summer 2026.

Right Tires, Right Job: A Guide for Skid-Steer Operators
By Wayne Hintz SPECIAL TO CEG
Selecting the right tire for your skid-steer loader is more than a matter of preference. The right choice can improve productivity, reduce downtime and boost overall profitability.
Skid-steer loaders are built to handle tough jobs on a variety of surfaces, but knowing the primary terrain you’ll work on is key to maximizing performance.
Pneumatic and solid tires each have advantages depending on jobsite conditions, material handling needs and budget considerations.
Advantages of Pneumatic Tires
Pneumatic tires are made of rubber and filled with air, providing a smoother ride and better shock absorption. Bobcat offers six types: standard-duty, heavy-duty, severeduty, turf, super-float and snow. These tires perform well on uneven or mixed terrain, offering longer wear, self-cleaning capability and extended uptime. The downside is susceptibility to punctures, which can lead to unexpected downtime.
FORESTRY MULCHERS STUMP GRINDERS STONE CRUSHERS
Advantages of Solid Tires
flex cushion, solid non directional cushion, solid severe duty non directional, solid flex offset, solid flex non marking and solid flex super smooth.
Fuel Efficiency Considerations
Pneumatic tires typically offer slightly better fuel efficiency due to lower rolling resistance. Solid tires are heavier and can increase fuel consumption, but durability often outweighs the cost in high-risk environments.
Recommendations By Application
• Construction and landscaping: Pneumatic tires for comfort and versatility
• Industrial and demolition: Solid tires for puncture-proof performance
• Seasonal or varied work: Pneumatic tires handle changing conditions more effectively
Solid tires are constructed from extratough rubber and require no inflation, eliminating the risk of flats while delivering long service life in harsh environments such as industrial or demolition applications. Although the initial purchase price can be higher, their durability often results in a lower overall cost of ownership over the life of the tire.
Manufacturers support a range of job site needs through varied tread and compound options, including choices that influence ride quality and specialized non marking compounds for select sizes. While tread naming conventions vary by manufacturer, at Bobcat, the lineup for compact loaders includes six solid tire tread options: solid
Evaluate terrain, debris risk, operator comfort and maintenance resources. Many fleets combine tire types, using pneumatic tires for general-purpose work and solid tires for high-risk jobs, balancing cost, uptime and productivity.
Matching your skid-steer tires to jobsite conditions ensures machines stay productive and profitable, no matter the challenge.

Komatsu Crowns CEC’s Allen Cherrington 2026 Tech Champ
Komatsu honored the precision, skills and commitment of diesel technicians in its dealer network with the 2026 North America Komatsu Advanced Technician Competition (ATC) — held at Komatsu’s Cartersville Customer Center in Cartersville, Ga.
The competition spanned two days as ten technicians were scored in the areas of technical capability, quality of work and safety.
Allen Cherrington of Columbus Equipment Co. (Ohio) won the event and was crowned champion. Jorge Moreno of Lyle Equipment (Southeast) came in second place and Nathan Specht of Komatsu Company-Owned Dealer East finished third.
Earning a spot in the championship was its own competition as technicians from throughout North America participated in formal prequalifying events. Ultimately ten technicians made their way to Cartersville to go head-to-head in events that ranged from machine inspection and troubleshooting techniques to customer relations and safety.
“Pride in craftsmanship and the resulting success that it helps deliver for fleet managers and business owners is the driving force behind every technician in the Komatsu network — but bragging rights
and being recognized among the best are great prizes as well,” said Griffin Reome, director of technical workforce development, Komatsu. “The real success here is shining a spotlight on the passion and discipline, and the resulting job satisfaction, that comes with being a technician in the heavy equipment industry.
“Allen, Jorge and Nathan — and all 10 finalists — are showcasing how important these careers are. And that these jobs are something to aspire to for anyone who is technically minded, loves building things, and appreciates real craftsmanship and the power of heavy equipment.”
Each winner of the Komatsu ATC received a selection of Komatsu-branded prizes and merchandise. In addition, the top two finishers earned an exclusive “Day in the Life” experience with the opportunity to see how a pit crew operates up close at the upcoming Formula One Miami Grand Prix, made possible through Komatsu’s ongoing partnership with the Atlassian Williams F1 Team.
“Speed, precision, talent and the combination of peak human performance with extreme technical excellence — we couldn’t think of a better way to honor these technicians,” said Reome.
Fairfax County Parkway Project Targets Congestion
from page 8
on the existing slopes. The construction team will be installing pilings to ensure the stability of the retaining walls and slopes.
The work will eliminate an at-grade pedestrian crossing on the Parkway at the Burke Centre Parkway signal. To improve pedestrian safety and reduce traffic delays, the shared-use path will be rerouted from the southbound side of the Parkway under the bridge spanning the Norfolk Southern Railroad to connect to existing pedestrian facilities and Burke Centre Parkway.
Shirley is taking special precautions to avoid damage to tributaries to Popes Head Creek on the northbound side of the Parkway. The contracting team is widening the bridge over the creek and adding a shared-use path on the northbound side. Workers will protect the stream with a series of post-and-panel retaining walls and castin-place concrete cantilever walls along the edge of the stream. The post-and-panel walls will enable workers to do construction on the roadway side without impacting the stream. The cantilevered walls require less concrete than gravity walls but need precise construction.
Shirely’s team also will improve the driving experience for future travelers by con-
structing an additional lane on the ramp from the Parkway to Route 123. In addition, the team will improve access to southbound Route 123 by adding a third left-turn lane from Fairfax County Parkway.
While the future looks bright for Fairfax County Parkway, Shirley’s teams are taking steps to make it easier for motorists to negotiate the often-complicated work zone. Workers will maintain 2-ft. shoulders along the roadway between the traffic lanes and barriers. Where barriers are not required, the construction team will build wider shoulders. Advanced warning signage will inform motorists of road work, and the project team is providing regular communication to drivers with construction updates about changing traffic patterns.
Shirely Contracting team’s work on the southbound Fairfax County Parkway is making solid progress.
“The Parkway is a key corridor for traffic in busy Fairfax County,” said Jeff Austin, vice president of Shirley. “We are doing work that will reduce traffic congestion, keep pedestrians safer and doing it in an environmentally responsible way.” CEG

PARKWAY
This 2-mi. long project will impact a critical corridor for residents traveling from the north end of the county near the Potomac River to I-95 and Springfield in the south.

MTI Equipment Celebrates 40 Years, Marking Four Decades in Industry
Equipment photo
From its 1986 beginnings to its current position as an industry leader, the MTI story has always been about the people. The ownership group leading the charge into its next 40 years (L to R) are Canon Stahl, Alain Trimble, Shawn Hendricks and Mike Lauzon.
MTI Equipment announced its 40th anniversary, commemorating four decades of service to the horizontal directional drilling (HDD) industry. From its founding in 1986 to its current position as a global leader in preowned HDD equipment, with more than 5,000 drills sold, MTI’s journey is defined by innovation, resilience and a steadfast commitment to the contractors who power our infrastructure.
Full-Circle Evolution
MTI was founded by a utility contractor who recognized the impact of HDD equipment in its early days. He later brought in his son, Canon Stahl, and son-in-law, Shawn Hendricks, to help grow the business. Their success ultimately led to MTI’s acquisition by Ditch Witch/Charles Machine Works in 2012.
In 2019, the organization completed a strategic re-acquisition from the Charles Machine Works/Toro family of companies, restoring MTI to its independent, family-owned roots. Since then, the company has continued to experience significant growth in personnel, facilities and industry expertise.
Team Strengthening
Following the re-acquisition in 2019, the leadership team — Shawn Hendricks, Canon Stahl and Alain Trimble — strengthened the company’s competitive position by partnering with Mike Lauzon, a seasoned industry veteran and son of the founder of HDD Broker.
With his deep industry roots, Lauzon joined an ownership group with unmatched experience, relationships and technical expertise. The company also has continued to attract and develop talented professionals, building a team of nearly 50 employees.
Culture, Safety: Core of Success
Central to MTI’s success is a dedication to safety and employee well-being. MTI has achieved a major internal
milestone: more than 1,400 consecutive days without a losttime injury. This achievement underscores the company’s priority of making MTI one of the safest and most rewarding workplaces in the industry.
Message From Leadership
Alain Trimble, a key leader in the ownership group, reflected on the milestone:
“Reaching 40 years in business is an incredible milestone for our company,” he said. “This achievement would not be possible without the trust of our customers, the collaboration of our partners and most importantly the dedication of our employees. Their hard work, commitment, and pride in what we do every day are the true foundation of our success. Because of them, we are able to consistently provide what we believe is the best preowned HDD equipment and, as we say, ‘Take the Risk Out of Buying Used.’ We are grateful to everyone who has been part of this journey and look forward to continuing to serve our customers for many years to come.”
Looking Ahead: 2026, Beyond
As MTI moves forward into its fifth decade, the company remains focused on growth and customer value. To kick off the celebration, MTI will roll out a series of promotions throughout 2026, with details to be announced in the coming weeks.
About MTI Equipment
Headquartered in North Port, Fla., MTI Equipment is a global distributor of preowned HDD equipment. Operating from a 40,000-sq.-ft. facility on 13 acres, and serving customers in more than 40 countries, MTI is dedicated to providing superior equipment, industry-leading certified preowned standards and support for the HDD and utility construction sectors.

His career is distinguished by a unique foundation rooted in engineering and evolving into senior legal leadership.
“For nearly two decades, Brian has played a critical role in guiding our legal strategy and supporting the growth and success of our company,” said Clay Haden, president and CEO of Skanska USA Building. “We are thankful for his leadership and contributions. Evidently, Tanja Dysli is delighted with the recognition. “Especially since I’ve only been at TVH for a few months. Of course, this is the result of the whole Operations team, who work hard every day towards our goal of sustainable growth,” she said. “Moreover, it’s proof that, as a market leader, TVH is on the right track towards futureproofing its business by investing in strengthening stock availability and providing lead times that are both competitive and reliable. And on a personal note, I’m really happy to keep being included on the list, after my inclusion last year.”
The list recognizes senior executives who are shaping the direction, scale and impact of their companies worldwide. The selection is based on a balanced framework that includes leadership responsibility, organizational impact and industry influence.
The Top 100 is created and curated by the international magazine Supply Chain Digital, which specializes in providing news, analysis and reports on the supply chains of businesses worldwide.
After working at IKEA for 24 years, with the last six years as chief supply chain officer, Tanja joined TVH in October 2025 as chief operations officer. She brings a wealth of experience in complex global retail logistics and is now focused on harnessing this deep competence and technical passion within TVH to drive the company’s next chapter of growth.
Tanja was included in the Top 100 in Supply Chain last year as well. This year has already resulted in a new inclusion on the list after only a few months at TVH, marking her immediate, positive impact on the organization. Tanja is known to be an advocate for creating a diverse and inclusive workforce, and her leadership is characterized by innovative technology, continuous improvement and customer centricity. SANY America Celebrates 20 Years of North American Growth
SANY America marks its 20th anniversary with a milestone year of new programs, expanded support and a significant product introduction at ConExpo-Con/AGG 2026.
Since 2006, SANY America has built a deep and lasting commitment to the United States market. That commitment is anchored by North American facilities, including a 230acre manufacturing, parts distribution and administration campus in Peachtree City, Ga., and a 33,000-sq.-ft. facility in Canada, where more than 300 North American employees work to build and support SANY heavy equipment. From there, a network of more than 75 North Americanowned dealerships stretches from Maine to Washington, backed by distribution centers across Georgia, North Carolina, California and Ontario. Most parts orders ship the next day, so customers can get what they need and get back to work.
SANY’s 20-year journey in North America mirrors the remarkable growth of its parent company on the global stage. SANY Heavy Industries was founded in 1986 by four men who started with a small welding supply company and a belief that they could offer better products to the world. Now celebrating its 40th anniversary, SANY has grown into a $23 billion heavy equipment manufacturer through strategic reorganization for long-term expansion and a successful 2025 Hong Kong IPO to further invest in the global business.
With research and development and manufacturing facilities in Indonesia, India, China, Brazil, Germany, Turkey and the United States, SANY is ranked No. 6 on the KHL Yellow Table of global heavy equipment manufacturers. That global strength flows directly into the products and
support that SANY America brings to customers every day.
SANY America’s 20th anniversary year is not just about looking back. It’s about launching the next chapter. The company is announced several new programs rolling out in 2026:
SANY Finance Launch: To make it easier than ever for businesses to put SANY equipment to work, SANY America is launching its own finance offering, giving customers and dealers a streamlined, competitive financing solution directly through the brand they trust.
SANY Authorized Remanufactured Program: A pilot program is successfully under way, offering customers access to remanufactured components that meet SANY’s rigorous quality standards and providing a cost-effective path to keeping equipment performing at its best.
Genuine SANY Branded Attachments: SANY America is introducing a full line of genuine SANY branded attachments, including buckets, thumbs, couplers and hydraulic hammers, engineered and backed by the same team that builds each machine.
Certified Pre-Owned Program: Launching in late 2026, SANY America’s Certified Pre-Owned program will give buyers a trusted path to quality used equipment with the
confidence of SANY’s standards behind it.
SANY America headed to ConExpo-Con/AGG 2026 with one of the largest booths at the show, more than 50,000 sq. ft. and an expansive product lineup spanning construction, landscaping, material handling, crane, port and piling segments. Seven new products launched at the show, with a glimpse into six additional models.
The entire SANY excavator line has been updated and was introduced as the company’s next generation of products. Attendees also got a first look at SANY’s debut material handler for the North American market. For crane buyers, SANY is introduced a new 330-ton crawler crane and a 110-ton telescopic boom crane, while also expanding its rotary drill rig and pile driving product portfolio.
Technology took center stage as well, with the introduction of EVI, SANY’s new telematics tool for digital fleet management, designed to deliver measurable improvements in jobsite efficiency and significant value for equipment owners and operators.
Products including the recently released SY235H excavator and the ST230V compact track loader were also on display, alongside new genuine SANY attachments and a new line of genuine SANY replacement parts and hoses aimed at lowering customers’ overall parts costs. Many SANY construction machines, including hydraulic excavators and wheel loaders, are backed by a 5-year, 5,000-hour standard warranty.
And true to form, SANY America brought its signature Southern

Volvo CE Expands Iron Women Workforce Initiative
Volvo Construction Equipment formalized Iron Women as a unified global platform to solve a severe shortage of skilled operators, technicians and service professionals.
The initiative is positioned not as a symbolic gesture but as essential business infrastructure — a repeatable model that expands workforce capacity by attracting and developing long-overlooked talent.
“No skills, no scale. It’s that simple,” said Melker Jernberg, president of Volvo CE. “We can develop the most advanced machines, the smartest products and solutions and the cleanest technology — but none of it matters if there aren’t enough skilled people to deploy it. Iron Women isn’t about diversity for diversity’s sake. It’s about competence and growth — and the entire industry grows when we unlock capacity together.”
Proven Success in Ukraine, India
The Iron Women concept was originally introduced by Volvo Trucks in 2016 and has enabled more than 700 women across 10 countries to enter professional driving roles. In 2024, Volvo CE adapted the model for construction equipment, launching its first program in Ukraine to educate women as certified heavy equipment operators.
Through partnerships with training provider ETS Group and Swedish non-profit Beredskapslyftet, the program is part of a broader initiative aimed to reskill 1,000 women

are now working at customer sites and dealerships. A second cohort of 25 women recently completed operator training and is entering placement.
“Where I come from, women are rarely encouraged to step into roles like this,” said Laxmi Naik, participant of Iron Women India. “When I joined the program, I carried a lot of hesitation about whether I could really succeed. But over time, the training and support helped me discover my own potential. Today, I walk away not just with skills, but with confidence and the belief that I can build a different future for myself.”
Unlocking Industry Capacity at Global Scale
With proven results, Volvo CE is now expanding Iron Women from regional pilot programs into a scalable model. By training operators, technicians and service professionals across regions, the model enables faster technology adoption, higher equipment uptime and more resilient supply chains.
“The model works,” Jernberg said. “The next step is scaling it — expanding Iron Women to build workforce capacity where it’s needed most, at a pace that matches industry transformation.”
Volvo CE will expand Iron Women into additional regions throughout 2026 and is exploring Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland.

Volvo Construction Equipment formalized Iron Women as a unified global platform to solve a severe shortage of skilled operators, technicians and service professionals.
Meeting emissions standards while maintaining productivity has long been a challenge for compact equipment operators.
For contractors working under tight schedules and varied jobsite conditions, nonDPF engines are a practical solution — especially in start-stop, low-idle and low-RPM applications like agriculture, material handling, seeding and light grading — delivering performance without added maintenance or workflow interruptions.
Diesel engines remain the backbone of compact equipment, but traditional emissions technologies have not always aligned with how machines are used in the field. Many Tier IV diesel engines above 25 hp rely on a diesel particulate filter (DPF) to reduce emissions.
While effective, DPF systems require periodic regeneration cycles that can interrupt work and increase maintenance demands. Non-DPF engines take a different approach, meeting Tier IV emissions requirements without the need for a particulate filter or regeneration process.
Understanding Regeneration
A DPF (diesel particulate filter) is a porous filter in diesel engines that captures soot particles from exhaust to reduce emissions. Over time, the collected soot is burned off in a process called regeneration, ensuring the filter remains clear and the engine continues to perform reliably.
This cycle raises exhaust temperatures significantly and can take 15 to 30 minutes, or longer under certain conditions. Depending on the machine and application, operators may need to alter how the equipment is used to allow the process to complete.
Regeneration typically occurs in two ways. Passive regeneration happens naturally when the engine runs under sustained high-load, high-RPM operation. When exhaust temperatures aren’t high enough to clean soot in the DPF on their own, the machine initiates active regeneration.
Pressure sensors track soot buildup and notify the operator via audible and flashing light alerts, prompting action to complete the cleaning process and maintain engine performance. On job sites with frequent stops, short operating cycles or cold starts, regeneration can be interrupted, affecting productivity.
Challenges With DPF Engines
When regeneration cycles are delayed or interrupted, soot can build up in the filter, increasing exhaust back pressure and reducing engine performance. Operators may notice sluggish response, reduced fuel efficiency or warning indicators.
In severe cases, soot buildup can trigger forced regeneration or require service intervention or DPF replacement, potentially causing unplanned downtime. During regeneration, operators may notice slower cycle times, depending on the machine and the work being performed.
For rental fleets or crews with multiple operators, inconsistent operating habits can further complicate regeneration, increasing the risk of downtime and maintenance costs. These challenges have prompted many contractors to consider alternatives that better align with real-world jobsite conditions.
Benefits of Non-DPF Engines
Non-DPF engines eliminate regeneration entirely while still meeting Tier IV (above 25 hp) emissions standards. With no particulate filter to monitor, clean or replace, operators benefit from simplified maintenance and fewer workflow disruptions.
Ideal for stop-and-go work, cold conditions or high-demand attachment use with limited hydraulic flow, these engines perform reliably even in situations where completing regeneration cycles can be challenging.
By reducing system complexity, nonDPF engines can help improve uptime, support consistent performance and lower long-term operating costs, while also being operator-friendly — requiring less training and less monitoring by operators or service personnel.
Making the Right Choice
When evaluating compact equipment, contractors should consider how emissions technology fits their operating environment. For many, non-DPF engines offer a straightforward solution that prioritizes productivity, reliability and ease of ownership — allowing machines to stay focused on the work rather than system management.
