The Illinois Tollway has unveiled a 15year, $26.5 billion capital program that will generate decades of roadway, bridge and interchange construction projects across northern Illinois while modernizing one of the nation’s busiest transportation networks.
Dubbed “Driving Connections,” the initiative will fund projects from 2027 through 2042 and create a long-term pipeline of work for heavy civil contractors through corridor widenings, bridge replacements, interchange upgrades and expanding SmartRoad technology infrastructure.
The plan spans all five tollway corridors and the agency’s 294-mi. system, with investments designed to reduce congestion, improve freight mobility and strengthen transportation connections throughout a 12-county region.
Officials said the program will create thousands of engineering and construction jobs while supporting suppliers, equipment dealers and subcontractors throughout Illinois.
“The Illinois Tollway is more than just roadways — it’s a vital lifeline that connects people to the jobs, goods, healthcare, housing and opportunities they need to thrive,” said Cassaundra Rouse, executive director. “Driving Connections reinforces that mission by putting people first and ensuring our customers — and our state — are positioned for long-term success.”
The largest investment, totaling $6.63 billion, is planned for the Veterans Memorial Tollway (I-355). Work will include improvements to the I-355/I-88 interchange as well as widening segments between Interstate 55 and Army Trail Road to relieve congestion and improve traffic flow.
The Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88) will receive $3.53 billion in improvements, including construction of a new western access point, reconstruction from Illinois Route 56 to Illinois Route 251 and rehabilitation and widening work between the Aurora Toll Plaza and the Eisenhower Expressway.
The North Tri-State Tollway (I-94/I-294) is slated for $3.07 billion in roadway rehabilitation and bridge reconstruction between Balmoral Avenue and the Edens Spur. The corridor also will undergo early design work for future improvements at the I-294/I-90 interchange.
Along the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90), the agency plans to invest $2.6 billion in roadway upgrades stretching from Elgin to the Kennedy Expressway. Projects include 8 mi. of new SmartRoad infrastructure, expansion of the Lee Street interchange and reconstruction of aging

bridges and roadway segments between Rockford and Elgin.
The South Tri-State Tollway (I-294/I-80) will receive $2.39 billion in roadway repairs, bridge reconstruction and targeted widening projects between Illinois Route 394 and 159th Street. The corridor also will receive 5 mi. of SmartRoad infrastructure.
The Central Tri-State Tollway (I-294) is scheduled for $1.87 billion in improvements, including roadway and bridge reconstruction from Balmoral Avenue to Wolf Road, construction of a full interchange at Irving Park Road and design work for a new bridge spanning the Bensenville Railroad Yard.
An additional $830 million will fund
improvements along Illinois Route 390 and I-490 through a joint effort with the Chicago Department of Aviation. The work includes parking facilities, security screening infrastructure near the Illinois Route 390/I490 interchange and rehabilitation of original portions of the Illinois Route 390 corridor.
The size and duration of the program are expected to create substantial opportunities for heavy civil contractors throughout the region.
Projects will require large volumes of earthmoving, paving, bridge construction
and utility work over a 15-year period.
Contractors specializing in interchange construction, bridge replacement, concrete paving, asphalt paving, structural steel installation, drainage systems and intelligent transportation systems likely will see sustained bidding opportunities as projects move through various phases.
The extensive corridor widening projects also are expected to generate demand for excavators, dozers, wheel loaders, articulated trucks, motor graders, compactors, asphalt pavers, milling machines, cranes and bridge construction equipment.
Installation of SmartRoad infrastructure will require contractors experienced in fiber optic systems, communications networks, sensors and intelligent transportation technologies.
Because projects are spread across multiple corridors, the work could create a steady stream of contracts rather than a concentrated burst of activity, allowing contractors to strategically plan equipment purchases, workforce development and fleet replacements over several years.

Construction equipment is no longer just about providing the brawn crews need to get work done. Today’s equipment also has the brains to help crews work more efficiently and safely, taking some of the pressure off of stressed-out and oftentimes inexperienced workers.
“The amount of equipment that’s designed to be more intuitive and easier to operate, and sometimes even capable of thinking and acting on its own, continues to grow at a rapid pace,” said Dana Wuesthoff, show director of ConExpoCon/AGG.
And it’s not just core construction machinery like excavators and wheel loaders that are being equipped with the latest smart sensors and other digital tech. Specialized equipment like pavers, support equipment like generators and safety systems like cameras and lighting are all being designed with smart features that help make crews’ lives easier.
One challenge construction crews run into is changing job site conditions.
Paving contractors know this all too well.
“In working closely with paving contractors from all over the globe, we heard a consistent theme,” said Matt Michel, senior vice president of Metal Forms. “Paving contractors need a machine that will stand up to the rigorous demands of their projects, and also be capable of meeting the strict concrete consolidation specs demanded by owners.”
The problem is that many projects require different vibrator spacing and output depending on owner specifications. This is why Metal Forms has developed a roller screed that incorporates hydraulic vibrators, which Michel said makes it easy to adjust spacing. Additionally, the display allows operators to monitor vibrator output and depth as they work, helping to ensure proper consolidation.
Mobile generators, one of the unsung heroes on a construction site, also are impacted by changing job site conditions. Power demands vary throughout the day, which results in frequent periods when a generator isn’t running at optimum capacity. That can cause issues with the generator’s diesel engine, specifically the emissions equipment where unburned fuel can lead to carbon buildup. That can lead to increased fuel and oil consumption, and ultimately increased maintenance and downtime.
Echo Industrial Power Equipment has developed Smart

Emissions Technology (S.E.T.) to combat this problem and keep job sites humming along.
“S.E.T. adds a small electrical load to the generator during light and underloaded operating conditions,” said Ryan Fredrickson, senior product marketing manager of Echo IPE. “This assures that the generator and emission control equipment run efficiently at proper operating temperature.”
When construction crews are really feeling the pressure, it’s crucial to take a breath and reinforce the importance of following job site safety protocols. It’s also advantageous to give crews a helping hand by deploying some of the latest safety tech to job sites.
Vehicle safety technology is one place to start. Akvile Willmore, group marketing communications lead of Brigade Electronics, said technologies like obstacle detection systems, reversing alarms, mobile digital recorders (MDRs) and vehicle-mounted cameras help solve for three major construction site safety risks:
SmithCo Mfg. Inc. has reached an agreement with Midwest Diesel Service Inc. to sell SmithCo’s premium line of side dump trailers in east central and northeast Minnesota. Midwest Diesel Service is located in Blaine, Minn.
“Our existing Minnesota customers will appreciate the parts and service support that Midwest Diesel Service offers,” said Todd Karolczak, SmithCo’s director of sales and marketing. “We are excited to partner with their dedicated sales staff to grow the side dump market further.”
Midwest Diesel Service has been a trusted partner for diesel engine repair, parts and trucking needs for 35 years. In addition to more than 40,000 parts on hand, Midwest Diesel offers a wide range of trucks and trailers from top brands including Peterbilt, Landoll and now, SmithCo. For more information, visit midwestdiesel.net and sidedump.com.
• blind spots and poor visibility
• noise
• theft of vehicles, tools and fuel
Now, AI-powered cameras can even determine if vehicles and other objects are moving or stationary and can even recognize when certain obstacles happen to be human beings.
A manufacturer of emergency lighting also has been taking steps to make vehicles safer. By tying into the vehicle itself, Whelen Engineering’s CenCom Core intelligent control system understands when a vehicle is in park, how fast it’s going, whether it’s day or night, etc.
“Lighting adjustments are then made automatically based on what will be the most effective in a given situation,” said Chris Watkins, technology sales manager of Whelen Engineering. “The operator doesn’t have to fool with pressing buttons all the time. All they have to do is activate the lighting system, and automation handles the rest to keep that vehicle

That’s exactly what “smart” construction job site solutions are all about — improving safety and efficiency while taking

shoveling to running a screed to operating the paver. When it comes down to it, we all do whatever is necessary to get the job done.”
Joe joined J & J Asphalt Paving about five years ago after working for a utility company, and he and his wife, Lorin, have two children. He operates several pieces of equipment for the company to lay asphalt, do concrete work and more.
“This is a little more labor intensive than where I was before and a lot more weatherdependent when it comes to being able to work, but it’s great, and I’m looking forward to us working together to keep J & J Asphalt Paving humming along,” said Joe. “I don’t know exactly how we’ll play our roles out, but I know it’s going to work out fine because we share common goals.”
John Jr. said J & J Asphalt Paving began working with Kirby-Smith Machinery Inc. (KSM) about 11 years ago when J & J
Asphalt Paving purchased the 85-hp LeeBoy 8510C asphalt paver it uses for larger paving jobs such as parking lot overlays. It will pave up to 15 ft.

something, Kirby-Smith has been right there. Our relationship with them and our sales rep Joel Thomason has been great.”
“Kirby-Smith had just taken over the LeeBoy dealership at the time and was establishing its presence in the Kansas City area,” John Jr. recalled. “We have always had LeeBoy pavers because they are easy to operate, have great maneuverability and are sound machines. I’m a loyalist. LeeBoy has always done what we needed it to, so I stay with the one that I brought to the dance.”
John Jr., added, “With LeeBoy, we’ve never had significant downtime. Regular maintenance is about it. If we have needed
With Thomason’s help, J & J Asphalt Paving recently acquired the new 49-hp LeeBoy 1000G that paves up to 13 ft. Its compact size allows for paving in tighter areas compared to the larger 8510C, making patching and smaller jobs easier.
“We can run it with two guys instead of three, so it’s convenient,” said Nick. “The tilting hopper and easy-to-run screen are great features. It has electronics for the automatic augers, so you don’t have to click them on and off. When you feed, it starts and stops and will keep feeding the asphalt. We
use it for parking lots and driveways.”
“Joel has been great to work with. He’s knowledgeable about the paving industry and the equipment that’s going to be most productive,” said Dylon. “If we ever do need something, Kirby-Smith is right there to take care of us.”
During the past few years, J & J Asphalt Paving has added concrete paving to its resume. That’s become an increasingly bigger share of its work, but the largest percentage remains laying asphalt. As Nick, Dylon and Joe transition into fully running the company during the next four to five
years, they’re planning for that to continue to be the norm.
“We want to keep on doing what we have been, which is mostly commercial work,” said Nick. “A lot of our work is for repeat customers who we have developed good relationships with, so we’re focused on continuing to provide them with outstanding, quality work. We have a contract with a school district, and that’s a big part of our business, so we want to continue providing them good service too.”

In 2026, roller manufacturer Hamm is offering an extensive assortment of digital solutions to simplify and automate compaction in road construction and earthworks, opening up a new dimension of efficiency, quality and process reliability.
At the heart of this assortment are the products smart compact pro, smart compact for earthworks, track assist and WPT compacting.
With smart compact pro, Hamm integrates real-time density into the automated compaction process. The new technology will increase the quality of asphalt compaction and the service life of roads, while simultaneously lowering the costs of road construction and renovation, according to Hamm.
Smart compact pro also ensures that compaction targets are achieved, reducing the likelihood of additional expenditure as well as reducing the work involved in removing drill cores. With the help of the new real-time density scan sensor, the density is still calculated in real time, even for static compaction. Until now, real-time density was the missing piece of the asphalt compaction puzzle, which has now been found by Hamm in the form of smart compact pro.
Another benefit: The system is quick and easy to calibrate using a conventional measuring probe. The very first deployment of the system on a construction site was met with positive feedback, with Josef Hebel GmbH from Memmingen putting the smart compact pro to the test by paving 226,000 sq. ft. of asphalt surface course.
homogeneous compaction, but also help to make building projects more cost-effective by reducing the number of double passes and lowering diesel consumption, according to Hamm.
The direct adjustment of the amplitude also effectively prevents jump operation and over-compaction, at the same time as protecting the machine and its operator from mechanical loads. What’s more, it makes the VA drum an energy-efficient system overall.
The new track assist app for Android is the next phase in the development of the smart doc app and offers drivers an improved driving experience for asphalt construction and earthworks. It provides information on important compaction parameters, such as double passes, real-time density, temperature limits, changes in compaction value, reversing points or the proportion of jump operation. In the next stage of development, track assist will become a fully fledged assistance system that allows operators to compare compaction targets with up-to-date actual results, according to Hamm.

Hamm photo
The new compactors with VA drum make it quicker and easier to achieve a compaction target in earthworks, while also preserving the machine and the resources.
“This is a really important talking point for us when it comes to increasing quality in road construction and improving the longevity of the roads,” said Heinrich Lang, senior site engineer. “The driver was delighted with the level of support the system offered him on the construction project. From an engineering perspective, we were also really impressed, because we received the density data from the construction site straight away in real time. These real-time densities are critical, because they allow us to react to any faults straight away and, in turn, ensure longer-lasting roads.”
With WPT Compacting, operators also have a tool to document real-time density data for an in-depth analysis of all performance and machine data.
Another new addition is the HC 130i C VA compactors. These expand the existing product family of compactors with a VA drum (HC 200i C VA and HC 250i C VA) and also feature smart compact. By virtue of an infinitely variable amplitude and a newly developed compaction measurement system, this technology allows compactors to achieve automated compaction to a set target value in MN/m2.
As such, the new models offer not only reliable and

In combination with track assist, Hamm presents the Wirtgen Group performance tracker compacting. WPT compacting facilitates monitoring, documentation and analysis as well as reporting both during and after compaction.
The process data captured using WPT compacting, which includes the new real-time density measurements with smart compact pro, are transferred to the central construction site and fleet management tool from Wirtgen Group, the John Deere operations center, for analysis and visualization in a variety of views. Another feature is machine communication both between rollers and between rollers and pavers. Track assist and WPT compacting will be available spring 2026.
In road construction and earthworks operations, safety is always the top priority, as work in these sectors often present risks for workers on site. Hamm is turning to digital solutions in this regard too, to increase safety on construction sites and minimize the risk of accidents.
For instance, all machines with the easy drive operating concept on the HC, HD+, HX and HP series feature an interface for integrating systems for collision prevention, either ex works or as a retrofit solution. These technologies detect people or machines in the vicinity and warn the operator in time or, if necessary, take action via the machine control system to prevent collisions, for example by means of automatic deceleration or braking the machine to a complete stop. Soon Hamm will also offer a complete system ex works to prevent collisions.

Vögele launched the new Dash 5 Generation pavers in the United States at ConExpo 2026.
Alongside the SUPER 2100-5 X, the road paver specialist showed the new 10-ft. class for the first time at the show in Las Vegas. The SUPER 2000-5 X tracked paver enables paving widths of 10 ft. to 27 ft. 9 in., while the SUPER 2003-5 X wheeled variant achieves paving widths of up to 25 ft. 5 in.
Both pavers offer a laydown rate of up to 1,540 tons per hour and are designed for high paving speeds. As Dash 5 generation machines, they also combine user-friendliness, process automation and cost efficiency.
A number of new features increase operator comfort and reduce the commissioning and setup times. This increases productivity while simultaneously reducing costs for transportation or reworking, according to Vögele.
Both pavers can be used in combination with the new VR 600 and VF 600 screeds. The VR 600 with screed extensions mounted behind the basic screed is equipped with a completely redesigned guidance system that simplifies the paving of concrete profiles, according to Vögele.
In addition, its very low height affords an ideal overview of the inside of the auger tunnel. It offers paving widths of 10 ft. to 25 ft. 9 in. and is suitable for the construction of highways and larger projects with high paving speeds.
The VF 600 with extensions mounted in front of the basic screed offers an improved material flow for even material spreading. It enables paving widths of 10 ft. to 25 ft. 5 in. and is ideal for jobs with varying working widths.
The extensions for both screed types can be tilted by up to 10 percent and are therefore precisely aligned with the paving needs of the North American market. In conjunction with the vibration compaction system (V), they achieve optimal evenness and precompaction.
Both the screeds and the pavers of the new Dash 5 generation are designed entirely with their users in mind: with the upgraded ErgoPlus 5 operating

concept, Vögele provides a better overview, more comfort and storage options, improved ergonomics and an optional touchscreen display for digital applications.
The new paver access control function (PAC) enables convenient commissioning and decommissioning of the Dash 5 paver from ground level, according to Vögele.
In addition, the Lighting Package Plus option with permanently integrated LED floodlights provides additional safety and shorter setup times when working on construction sites at night.
With automatic functions such as AutoTrac automatic steering and screed width control or the Smart Pave digital paving control system, the Dash 5 pavers reduce the users’ workload while simultaneously increasing efficiency and quality, according to Vögele.
Furthermore, the digital solution Wirtgen Group performance tracker (WPT) paving enables precise documentation of the paving process and the work on the construction site. The new RoadScan option can be added to enable precise, full-coverage measurement of the paving temperature over a measuring width of up to 42 ft. 8 in.
In addition, Vögele has implemented a number of measures designed to reduce the Dash 5 paver’s CO2 and noise emissions. These include the improved EcoPlus low-emissions package. The speed-controlled fan has been adapted so that it calculates the rotational speed even more precisely and, together with other measures, reduces noise emissions.
Apart from the highway class pavers, Vögele also presented a mini class paver of the new generation in Las Vegas, the SUPER 800-5 P. The
700i, has an engine rated output of 74 hp, a laydown rate of up to 330 tons per hour and, with a width of only 4 ft. 7 in. and a length of 14 ft. 5 in., is also extremely compact, according to Vögele.
In combination with the AB 200 and AB 220 extending screeds and the vibration or tamper and vibration compaction variants, it offers paving widths between 1 ft. 8 in. and 11 ft. 6 in. — making it the ideal choice for paving on narrow construction sites, according to Vögele. Compared to its predecessor, the Dash 5 model also incorporates numerous new features.
On the one hand, Vögele has updated the material hopper: the asymmetrical material hopper wall configuration, for instance for paving along a wall, is now possible on both sides. Furthermore, the hopper walls of the SUPER 800-5 P now feature a double folding function, according to Vögele. This gives the operator an unobstructed view ahead of the paver.
Vögele also has further improved the ergonomics of the operator’s platform: the angle of the new ErgoBasic paver operator’s control console can now be adjusted in four steps to accommodate taller or smaller operators.
For the first time, the operator’s console of the new ErgoBasic 5 operating concept features an integrated display on which the operator can view the operational data of the machine in real-time.
In addition, Vögele has fully integrated operation of the auto grade basic system for automated grade and slope control into the machine control system. This means that screed operators can now control the SUPER 800-5 P via a console in compact form.

Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) has introduced safetyand productivity-boosting updates across its wheel loader lineup.
Customers can now take advantage of expanded options and upgraded large (L350, L260 rehandler), mid-size (L60, L70, L90, L120 electric) and compact (L25 electric, L20 electric) models, along with updated services like certifiable on-board weighing.
Driven by feedback from customers in demanding applications like quarrying, mining, construction, utilities, logging and agriculture, these enhancements are designed to maximize machine uptime and job site safety while strengthening the long-term profitability of every fleet.
Volvo CE’s largest wheel loader, the L350, now runs on a Volvo D17 engine, which delivers more power and up to 5 percent better fuel efficiency. The D17 engine uses wave piston technology to provide higher torque at lower rpm, enabling smoother low-speed operation and faster boom speeds, according to Volvo.

fitted with OilQuick, an automatic quick coupler system. This allows operators to connect and disconnect hydraulic attachments from the safety of the cab in seconds, maximizing uptime and versatility across different tasks, according to Volvo.
Together with Smart Control, a new machine feature that improves the interaction between the hydraulic, driveline and engine function to enhance performance, the D17powered L350 is positioned to elevate job site productivity while lowering total cost of ownership, according to Volvo.
For specialized material management, the L260 heavy-duty rehandler has been optimized to take productivity to new heights. Built on the L260 platform, the rehandler now features a heavier integrated counterweight that dramatically increases loading capacity. Operators can now maximize their cycles using a 10.7 cu. yd. bucket with a standard boom or a 9.5 cu. yd. bucket with a long boom. It also incorporates advanced technologies like automatic traction control to improve safety while reducing tire wear and operator fatigue.
In the mid-size range, Volvo CE has expanded its reverse by braking (RBB) and OptiShift technologies to the L60, L70 and L90. Previously reserved for larger-class models, these popular features eliminate power losses, reduce driveline wear and increase fuel efficiency by up to 15 percent.

contractors, Volvo CE is expanding its suite of services that bridge the gap between the operator’s cab and the back office.
The 22-ton L120 electric wheel loader has received significant updates to its operational and safety systems, including rimpull control to optimize traction in slippery conditions. Its responsive braking system is enhanced by a new electric brake valve, allowing full RBB functionality even when the battery’s state of charge is high or temperatures are extreme.
This system assists deceleration while providing similar behavior as the energy recouperation feature, which is able to recoup up to 15 percent of energy, extending runtime and reducing brake wear.
The L120 electric loader has proven successful in waste and recycling applications, and a dedicated waste handling package is now available, featuring a specialized cab air precleaner and all-around machine guarding.
In the compact lineup, the thirdgeneration L20 electric and L25 electric compact wheel loaders are now available in North America, after being previously introduced in other regions.
The L20 electric received a 21 percent increase in standard battery capacity, now matching the L25 electric.
Both machines also now come with expanded attachment options.
Certifiable on-board weighing is available in Europe for wheel loader models L110 through L260 (excluding the L120 electric) and will be piloted in North America. This system can be certified for trade by a third party, making it legal for billing.
This allows trucks to bypass site scales because the load ticket generated by the loader is accurate and secure enough for direct invoicing, which significantly streamlines site traffic and administrative efficiency, according to Volvo.
On-board weighing integrates seamlessly with Load Ticket, a Volvo CE service that wirelessly transmits tickets from the machine to a site office. This eliminates paper tickets and the possibility of them being lost, creates more accurate invoicing and simplifies customer management.
Safety and situational awareness are amplified by the optional Volvo Smart View with 360-degree view, now available for the L150 through L260. This system uses four strategically placed cameras to provide a complete bird’s-eye view around the machine on the integrated Volvo Co-Pilot display. By eliminating blind spots, it helps operators avoid obstacles, reduces the risk of accidents and decreases operator stress.

The new Pile Slip Assist feature helps improve traction and bucket fill, while larger high-strength steel buckets allow operators to move more material with every pass, compared with existing P-Tier wheel loader models, minimizing tire wear, which is one of the largest cost drivers in this size class.
Offering two modes of operation, the X-Tier loaders are designed to maximize efficiency without sacrificing output, said John Deere. In Standard Mode, operators can achieve up to 15 percent fuel savings, while Performance Mode delivers up to a 5 percent productivity increase for high-demand applications.
Together, these gains help reduce total cost of ownership by up to 4 percent compared to previous models, added the company.
Optional Advanced Vision System (AVS) and Advanced Object Detection features help expand visibility for the operator. AVS expands side and rear visibility beyond conventional mirrors, with two digital cameras installed on the side view mirrors to widen the field of view, while dynamic reversal projected path lines help operators visualize the machine’s reverse path based on articulation. These side views along with the rearview camera are integrated into a dedicated single display within the cab and help enhance job site awareness, especially in aggregate operations.
Lastly, like other John Deere X-Tier machines, the 844 and 904 models are supported by John Deere Operations Center, remote diagnostics and a range of service and maintenance plans.

final tasks that will deliver a bridge designed to serve the region for the next century, according to the BNSF Railway website.
The 1,554-ft.-long single-track bridge is being built adjacent to BNSF’s existing crossing, which dates to 1883 and was constructed by Northern Pacific Railway Co. The aging structure has become increasingly limited by modern freight demands and no longer accommodates the size and weight of today’s rail cars.
Once complete, the new bridge will support taller, wider and heavier freight cars while improving operational efficiency and positioning North Dakota industries for future growth. The bridge also was designed with wider piers capable of accommodating a second track should expansion become necessary.

According to updates on the Bismarck Rail Bridge Project’s website, the project team reached approximately 75 percent completion by the end of 2025 after utilizing double shifts throughout much of the construction season.
Crews completed Abutments 1 and 13 while constructing or finishing Piers 8, 10, 11 and 12. Work also advanced on river Piers 5 and 6 and Pier 4, located between River Road and the Missouri River.
Meanwhile, crews erected girders for Spans 1, 2 and 7 through 12 and poured bridge decks for Spans 1, 2, 7 and 9 through 12. Additional embankment material also was added to support future track installation.
Today, the entire bridge substructure is complete, including all 11 piers and two abutments. Most of the bridge’s 12 spans are in various stages of completion as crews push toward a late summer finish.
Building a railroad bridge while maintaining rail traffic, preserving river access and minimizing community disruption has required an extensive fleet of specialized equipment.
Throughout construction, barges have served as floating work platforms for long-reach excavators, cranes, bucket lifts, welders and pile hammers operating in the Missouri River. Crews assembled temporary cofferdams around future pier locations, allowing workers to create dry work zones for foundation construction.
Pile driving operations, some occurring overnight to maintain the schedule, have been among the most visible aspects of the project.
Onshore, cranes have erected massive steel girders while crews poured concrete bridge decks and constructed embankments. Construction trucks delivering fill material have utilized designated access routes along North Dakota Department of Transportation
rights of way to keep heavy traffic away from local neighborhoods.
As work shifts deeper into the river corridor, lighting systems and navigation buoys continue guiding recreational and commercial boat traffic safely through the work zone.
“This is a significant project with 24/7 work, but we’ve made sure the river is clear for recreational and commercial boats,” said Mike Schaefer, BNSF engineering manager, in a statement on the BNSF Railway website.
The final stage of construction will focus on installing track infrastructure and commissioning signal systems.
Track crews will build the rail system atop the bridge while signal teams verify all systems are operating properly before traffic is transferred to the new crossing. Once testing is complete, train operations officially will shift to the new structure, according to the Bismarck Rail Bridge Project website.
The website also states that in July, crews
will begin installing falsework beneath the existing bridge to prepare for its removal. The temporary support structures will stabilize the aging crossing while workers dismantle it piece by piece.
Throughout demolition activities scheduled for the summer and fall, BNSF officials said the Missouri River channel will remain open for recreational users.
North Dakota remains one of the nation’s most freight-dependent states, with agriculture, energy and manufacturing industries relying heavily on efficient rail transportation.
BNSF officials say replacing the bridge will strengthen supply chains, improve reliability and support future economic growth throughout the state. The privately funded project also is expected to reduce maintenance demands and improve inspection safety for railroad employees.
The bridge represents one piece of BNSF’s broader investment strategy in North Dakota. Over the past decade, the railway has invested more than $1.5 billion in the state’s rail network and employs more than 1,100 people statewide according to the Bismarck Rail Bridge Project website.
As crews enter the final months of construction, the towering steel structure emerging over the Missouri River stands as both a symbol of modern rail infrastructure and the next chapter in a transportation corridor that has connected North Dakota communities for more than 140 years.
When trains begin crossing later this year, one of the region’s most ambitious infrastructure projects will officially move from construction site to critical freight lifeline, ensuring the corridor remains operational for generations to come.

A major shift is taking place in the way transport logistics operations are executed. AI-driven transportation management systems are becoming active participants in the dispatching process.
from page 1
A traditional TMS records data related to loads, drivers and documents, whereas an AI-powered TMS reads that data and acts on it in the moment.
The shift takes the system from a digital filing cabinet to a working assistant, said Lily Kelce, industry lead of AIpowered TMS software provider Tentrucks.
“For years, a TMS was passive,” she said in a Tentrucks blog post: Information was entered and the system held it. “The better platforms have become active.”
The backbone of tech-enabled dispatch is a good TMS or dispatching software platform, said Madison Jones of azbigmedia.com.
As she explained, “modern dispatching software acts as a mission control for trucking operations.”
Today’s TMS can automate countless tasks that once ate up hours of a dispatcher’s day, said Jones. When a new load comes in the system can automatically match it to the best available truck and driver based on location, load requirements and driver hours.
She said that’s a process that today takes seconds, not phone calls. “Load details, driver status and route info are all in one digital dashboard.”
And today’s dispatch software has the capability to integrate with other systems including ELDs, GPS trackers and back-office accounting software.
This means an owner-operator’s data flows in real time without duplicate data entry.
One leading platform, said Jones, connects with more than 30 different ELD providers and syncs with QuickBooks, eliminating manual re-entry and errors.
She said when a dispatcher assigns a load, the ELD pings the system and everyone knows where that truck is and how many hours the driver has left.
“Likewise, billing info can be generated as soon as a delivery is completed, with electronic proof of delivery captured.”
That’s why automation is huge — routine updates like “driver arrived” or “load delivered” can be sent automatically to brokers and shippers.
This instant relay in turn frees up dispatchers from constant check-in calls and all of this ramps up workflow as it cuts

down on administrative overhead.
Jones said, “in short, truck dispatching operations can handle more loads with the same staff, because the software takes care of the grunt work.”
AI-powered TMS systems review every load, watch for mistakes and handle the repetitive tasks that used to fall on a dispatcher or the owner.
“That change matters most for smaller carriers,” Kelce said. “An owner-operator does not have a back-office team to catch errors. An AI-powered TMS fills that role.”
With an AI TMS, a single operational platform can replace disconnected spreadsheets, separate accounting tools and manual processes.
Cutting-edge AI-driven TMS work hand in hand with tracking and communication systems.
The decision that matters most for a mid-market fleet is a shared database, said AI-powered TMS provider PCS.
It boils down to “whether dispatch, accounting and fleet data share one database,” for starters.
The next question is whether AI operates inside the workflow or in a separate dashboard.
And finally, whether the platform scales from your current fleet size without forcing a migration later.
The software license is only 20 to 25 percent of the TMS investment, said PCS. Integration, training and implementation make up the rest.
“AI in transportation management delivered real value in 2025, but only in narrow, well-defined workflows,” said the company.
Load matching, empty mile reduction, backhaul identification and exception prioritization were tracked, but the technology wasn’t intuitive.
Platforms that embed AI natively into dispatch workflows outperformed those that added it as a separate reporting dashboard.
“The distinction matters because AI recommendations depend on data quality and data freshness,” said PCS.
“A TMS with AI bolted on top of disconnected dispatch and accounting systems recommends based on stale, partially complete data.”
With AI built into a unified database, a TMS can recommend based on live ELD status, real load records, current driver location and historical lane performance.
“Same algorithm, vastly different outcomes,” PCS said. Its proprietary AI system analyses more than 36 data points to recommend the best driver for a specific load.
Load location, remaining hours of service, equipment type, lane history, driver preferences and customer restrictions are all taken into account with AI technology.
“Every recommendation includes the reasoning behind it so dispatchers can see why the system chose that driver,” according to PCS.
Dispatchers can override operational judgment with AI.
“The transparency … separates a tool dispatcher’s trust from a black box they ignore,” the company said.
An AI-powered system also can identify profitable return legs and contact shippers automatically before the outbound delivery completes.
“Most carriers start backhaul-sourcing after the driver delivers,” PCS said. “By then, the truck is already empty and the dispatcher is scrambling.”
“Running that search in parallel with the outbound load closes the gap between delivery and the next revenuegenerating mile.”
The TMS solutions provider suggests owner-operators ask TMS vendor certain questions about AI-powered systems.
First, does the AI run inside the dispatch screen or in a separate analytics dashboard the dispatch team has to open separately?
Second, what data does the AI actually access and is that data live or batch-synced?
“The answers determine whether AI is an operational tool or a marketing feature,” said PCS in a blog post.
Kelce of Tentrucks believes the best TMS platforms this year “treat automation as a way to support people, not replace the human side of freight.”
She noted four features that separate a “strong” AI-driven TMS from a dated system:

Finn Corporation introduced the Finn MBL1, its new, entry-level material blower, designed to help contractors and landscapers improve efficiency, reduce material waste and deliver professional-quality results on every job, according to the company.
Built specifically for residential and light commercial applications, the MBL1 provides a practical solution for crews handling smaller jobs, tight-access areas and detail- oriented work. Its compact footprint and towable design make it easy to transport and use on site, while maintaining the Finnstandard durability and reliability, according to the company.
At the core of the MBL1 is a Vanguard 23hp small-block V-Twin EFI engine with electric start, combining dependable performance with excellent fuel efficiency. A continuous-feed hopper ensures steady material flow with fewer interruptions, while a dual gearbox-driven airlock system with auto-reverse technology provides plenty of torque to cut through materials with ease and keep a crew running all day long, according to the company.
With blower performance rated at 500 cfm at 7 psi, operators can place material quickly, evenly and accurately across a variety of job site conditions, according to Finn.
The MBL1 can significantly reduce
material waste. Where traditional hand spreading can lead to uneven coverage, over application and material loss — especially in ornamental areas — the MBL1 helps deliver controlled, consistent application which improves coverage quality while reducing excess material costs, according to the company.
Designed to be easy to use for entry-level material blowers, the MBL1 features a simplified 8-button control panel, a userfriendly remote control with start/ stop and emergency stop functions and onboard telematics for monitoring and diagnostics. These controls make the machine easy to learn and operate, especially for first-time users, which helps crews get up to speed quickly and work more efficiently, according to Finn. The MBL1’s compact design maximizes capability while providing a manual hose reel with 100 ft. of 4-in. EcoStrike hose, giving crews the reach and flexibility needed for residential mulch jobs, ornamental areas and hard-to-access spaces. This extended reach reduces unnecessary material handling
and repositioning, further improving job site efficiency and minimizing waste. The lightweight, maneuverable unit is easy to transport and store, and has a small footprint, making it an ideal solution for small to midsized landscaping businesses and owneroperators, according to the company.

Positioned as a true entry-level machine, the MBL1 focuses on doing one job exceptionally well: placing mulch and landscape materials faster, more evenly and with less physical labor than traditional methods. For contractors currently relying on wheelbarrows and hand spreading, the biggest advantage is the combination of faster installation times and more precise material usage, which helps lower material costs and establish more predictable job margins. Crews can complete jobs more consistently, reduce rework and deliver a higherquality result, according to Finn.
Ideal for residential landscape contractors, property maintenance crews, and businesses installing moderate volumes of mulch annually, the MBL1 delivers a strong return on investment by helping crews access a truly smarter way to work — one that maximizes both time and material efficiency, while keeping operation simple. Finn’s standard one-year warranty backs the Finn MBL1, ensuring dependable support and serviceability.

Beyond traditional roadway construction, the Tollway has earmarked $5.57 billion for systemwide investments. Those projects include sustainability initiatives, modernization of maintenance facilities and upgrades to back-office systems that support I-PASS operations and open-road tolling technology.
Funding also will support interagency partnerships through the Corridor Opportunities for Regional Enhancements initiative and collaborative efforts with the Illinois Department of Transportation, Chicago Department of Aviation and local municipalities.
Officials said the capital program was developed around five goals: strengthening long-term reliability, driving economic growth, maximizing previous investments, expanding regional access and transforming the system through technology.
The Illinois Tollway plans to pay for the $26.5 billion program through a combination of toll revenues and revenue bonds backed by future toll collections. Unlike many transportation agencies, the Illinois Tollway receives no state or federal tax dollars for maintenance and operations. The agency’s 294-mi. system is entirely funded by its users.
Beginning Jan. 1, 2027, passenger tolls for I-PASS users would increase by approximately 45 cents per toll, while commercial vehicle toll rates would rise by about 30 percent. Starting in 2029, toll rates also would be adjusted every other year based on inflation using the Consumer Price Index.
Officials said passenger rates would remain below the national average even after the increase, marking the first passenger toll adjustment since 2012.
The agency pointed to previous projects as examples of the benefits generated by long-term investments. Improvements completed along the I-90 corridor in 2017 reduced travel times by approximately 25 minutes, while the I-294/I-57 interchange project reduced travel times by as much as 13 minutes.
The Illinois Tollway said Driving Connections was developed through an extensive public engagement process that included input from a Stakeholder Advisory Team composed of more than 40 leaders representing business, labor, transportation, planning, community organizations and local governments.
Public hearings on the capital program and proposed toll increases will be held throughout July. Public comments will be accepted through Aug. 3, 2026.
Construction is expected to begin in 2027, with projects continuing through 2042.

Purple Wave Auction announced Brian Fischer has joined the company as a district sales director for Ohio, eastern Indiana and Detroit.
Purple Wave Auction hosts online, noreserve equipment auctions serving the agriculture, construction, government and fleet industries, providing customers with opportunities to buy and sell equipment with confidence.
As district sales director, Fischer will lead and develop a team of territory sales managers across Purple Wave’s Buckeye region, driving growth through strategic leadership, coaching and market development initiatives. He will foster strong relationships with regional leaders and operational teams while collaborating closely with the enterprise accounts team to ensure a coordinated approach for customers within the enterprise accounts program.
Fischer brings 20 years of experience in the construction equipment industry, where he owned two Volvo equipment rental franchises in Cincinnati and Dayton. After selling the businesses, he held multiple roles before transitioning to Bush Truck in Mason,

Ohio, as the national vice president of sales of the rental division. Most recently, he worked for Michelin, where he worked with dealers, fleets and construction companies in the Great Lakes and Northeast regions.
“I’m most looking forward to working with and learning from the team,” said Fischer. “I am excited to be out with our sellers and making connections with our buyers.”

However, “it does not handle a hard rate negotiation or a broker relationship,” she said. “The strongest providers back their software with real people, such as 24/7 managed dispatching, for the work that needs a human.”
• One centralized system: Running separate apps for accounting, tracking and compliance creates duplicate work and blind spots, said Kelce. A 2026 TMS can bring ELD data, accounting and automated international fuel tax agreement (IFTA) reporting onto a single screen.

fine.
• How fast do you need to be running? Some platforms take months to implement. Others are usable the same week.
• What has to integrate? Most carriers need QuickBooks, an ELD and IFTA. Large 3PLs need deep enterprise ERP connections.
• What is your budget model? Enterprise contracts are large and custom. Carrier-first platforms use predictable, smaller plans.
• What if your operation is small, say your fleet is less than 10 trucks?
automation,” said Kelce. “It does not replace the judgment needed for rate negotiations and broker relationships.”
Backoffice integration for most carriers are QuickBooks for accounting, a registered ELD for hours of service and automated IFTA reporting.
Pricing for an AI-powered system depends on the platform and your fleet size, she said. Enterprise systems use large custom contracts, whereas carrier-first platforms use smaller, predictable plans.
Kelce believes the best TMS for a 200-truck enterprise fleet is the wrong TMS for an owner-operator. She said the reverse also is true.
Owner-operators shopping for AI-powered TMS should match the platform to their operation. She
• A real connection between cab and office: “Drivers on the road and dispatchers in the office need to share information without phone tag,” said Kelce. “That requires a dedicated, responsive mobile app, not a third-party add-on.”
offered a list of points to consider:
• How many trucks do you run?
Enterprise platforms are built for hundreds of units and assume an IT team. Carrier-first platforms are built for 1 to 50 trucks.
• Who handles your dispatch?
If you want managed dispatching included, you need a provider that offers it. If you have your own dispatch staff, software-only is
Kelce said for owner-operators, the best TMS is one built for small operations. It should be “fast to learn, affordable and able to handle dispatch, IFTA and invoicing in one place.”
Once paperwork, dispatch and compliance start costing more time than they should, a TMS pays for itself even at one truck.
And she said, today’s systems are not meant to replace the human worker. Instead, it combines AI with human dispatching support.
“AI handles data checking and
“Moving to an AI-native TMS is one of the fastest ways to reduce friction, support driver retention and protect margins in a volatile freight market,” said Kelce. “The key is matching the platform to the operation. Enterprise systems suit enterprise fleets.”
She believes that for North American carriers and owneroperators, a carrier-first platform combining AI tools with human dispatching expertise is the better fit. CEG
