McCann Construction Specialties Company’s first location circa 1967.

Richard McCann, founder and CEO, McCann Construction Specialties Co.

WISE DECISIONS, HARD WORK MARK 50-YEAR AMERICAN SUCCESS STORY A successful company reaching its 50th anniversary is no small feat. When looking back, one can see several milestones that must be reached in order to make it happen. For McCann Industries, its 25th anniversary was such a milestone. When McCann Industries—at the time, McCann Construction Specialties Co.—was a quarter century old, it was profiled as a company with an “expanding world,” a growing company, in other words, with four branch offices and 10,000 line items in its inventory. Its founder and CEO, Richard McCann, confidently predicted in that year, 1992, that he and his associates were “about to kick our company up another notch. I am excited about a maturing process that I see going on around here. We are at the brink of a whole new level of professionalism in the way this business is run.” So from the perspective of 25 years ago, it is hardly a surprise that the Illinois company has tacked on another 25 years and still is going strong. In the old literature celebrating the company’s silver anniversary are pictures of valued employees in a variety of jobs. One photo shows a handsome salesman with a Kennedyesque head of hair and a year of employment under his belt. The young man, Jim McCann, had grown up in the business, coming to work with his father on Saturdays, and in

1992 was a recent college graduate. Still uncertain if he wanted to work in his father’s company, he had tentatively hired on as an outside salesman. He worked in the position for seven years. “Nothing was handed to me,” McCann, now president and CEO, says with evident pride. Reaching the top spot was the culmination of years of informal apprenticeship that began with direct sales to customers before migrating to management of rental equipment and eventually overall supervision of sales. “Then one day my dad pulled me aside and said, ‘You have to get serious if you want to continue on.’ That was my wake-up call.” An MBA followed and the admonition to “get serious” ran its successful course. ***

In 1967, Dick McCann was a salesman for a small construction supply company and realized that he never was going to be happy working for someone else. Furthermore, he saw a niche business opportunity: a store where construction contractors, especially those building with concrete, could acquire a myriad of construction products in one stop rather 11

than collect supplies at hardware stores, lumber yards and other retail outlets. So on April 1 of that year—backed by a $1,500 loan (at 5% interest) from his father-in-law—McCann Construction Specialties Company was born. Dick promptly went on the road to sell his concrete specialty products to contractors. In the evenings at home, his wife Lynn typed invoices. Their business office location was a two-car garage in Glen Ellyn, which the company outgrew its first year. Its next location was in Villa Park and then moved twice more in Addison before settling into an 85,000-square-foot building on Rohlwing Road that still is headquarters. How did McCann come by this entrepreneurial spirit? The mercantile impulse pops up where it will, but the company founder was motivated by something even more fundamental, his son says. “He just wanted to put food on the table for his family and it became an American success story.” The company in the late 1960s and ’70s focused on serving construc-

tion companies that were building Chicago’s suburbs, specifically up and down the Fox Valley that slices south through counties lying west of the city. McCann pursued contractors there who were forming basements and pouring cul-de-sac curbing and sidewalks for new neighborhoods. To keep the company in the general proximity of construction projects so contractors wouldn’t have to travel far to a McCann outlet, Dick McCann opened or acquired branch stores in Alsip, Wauconda, Chicago, and Joliet. Some company locations have shifted in the years since, but in 2017 it still operates multiple full-service specialty materials and equipment stores. * * *

By far the most significant evolutionary step for the company occurred in 1995. That was the year Dick McCann dramatically 12

expanded his equipment offerings. It happened when Case Construction executives decided to sell three of their heavy construction equipment stores and McCann decided to buy them to complement the light equipment he already offered customers. Just that quick, Dick McCann found himself the head of two companies—McCann Power & Equipment and McCann Construction Specialties. Dick McCann turned to industry veteran and respected colleague, Dennis Kruepke, to run McCann Power & Equipment. Five years later, he merged the two companies together and the single company took on the name it carries today, McCann Industries, Inc. and Kruepke served as president of the combined company. “His company was getting too big and Dick had the wisdom and vision to know it,” Kruepke says. McCann and Kruepke were construction industry peers who had met and become very good friends. Till joining McCann, Kruepke had worked on the manufacturing side of business with companies like Gehl, Toyota and Mustang. “Dick presented

me with the opportunity to run the company, with the premise that I would get some ownership in the company and someday—if his son became totally interested in the company—I would turn over the reins to him.” With back-office strengths of a conservative, disciplined manager, Kruepke oversaw growth of the new company. He successfully steered it through economic recessions, including the “great” one that struck the industry particularly hard in 2008, He says he feels good that company finances were strong when he left day-to-day oversight of the firm in 2015. On Jan. 1 of that year, Jim McCann completed his self-imposed apprenticeship, purchasing Kruepke’s remaining shares in the company and becoming president and CEO. “The beauty of the story is how successful the transition was,” Jim McCann says. Dick McCann had died of cancer in 2013, yet the plan of succession never missed a beat. “Dennis, my father, and I had worked out a successful plan to grow the company so it would thrive beyond 14

Dad. But what really allowed me to fulfill my role in the business was the professionalism that Dennis brought to the company.” Kruepke also was pleased with the smooth changeover at the top. “It was interesting that the plan Dick and I put together long ago was pretty much the way it ended up. The key is that everybody kept their word. The McCann family is very honorable, a wonderful family that took me under its wing. I feel very honored and happy about what I was able to do for the family.” Kruepke notes that as the company grew, it looked outward and became involved in the industry. During his tenure, Kruepke served as president of Illinois Equipment Distributors, a role Jim McCann assumed in December. McCann also is on the board of the Associated Equipment Distributors Foundation.

Today, Jim McCann oversees three Case Construction Equipment dealerships in Bolingbrook and McHenry, Ill., and Schererville, Ind., and four additional McCann locations in Addison, Crestwood, Wauconda and Chicago, Ill. A couple of the locations offer both Case equipment and construction supplies. The company employs about 100 people and represents more than 400 manufacturers and suppliers. Helping keep a handle on this sprawling company is Glenn Hayward who, like Jim McCann, worked his way up in the company. As a 20year-old, Hayward began working in a McCann warehouse in 1983. He eventually drove a company truck before moving to a supervisory position and then to managing the Addison branch office. He finally got into operations management and rose to vice president of operations in 2005. “I kind of grew up here. It’s not the only company I’ve worked for, but real close to it,” Hayward says. He had been a VP for just three years when the so-called Great Recession began to erode profits in a

We were used to seeing larger sales numbers and that was the beginning of it. We didn’t know what was happening but we knew something wasn’t right.” The subsequent 2009-10 period was crunch time for the entire industry and McCann wasn’t spared. In response to their uneasy feelings, executive decisions were made to get a business that was “built for speed” back in line with a slowing economy. “In the course of the next two years, we did some tough things in the area of expense control. It wasn’t easy but we did what we had to do to keep the health of the business,” Hayward recalls. He says the management response to the economic downturn was in line with the character of the company. “Over the years, McCann has been a relatively conservative company. It’s always had a strong business planning process that involved not only senior management teams but, in many cases, middle management. That has helped us succeed

over the years, always having a plan and working it to the best of our ability.” The company’s chief financial officer, Steve Roggeman, concurs with Hayward’s analysis. “What the company did was show great discipline during good years so that it was able to survive the bad years. So coming out of the recession, we were able to get right back in the mix. Our sales level now is almost back to the pre-recession level.” Roggeman, who joined the McCann team in 2013, says the company’s reputation is that of a company with a firm grip on financial matters. “We annualize our performance in many ways that a lot of our peers and manufacturers use as standards. That shows up in best practices meetings that we’ve attended. This financial sense is one of the key things that helped us during the recession.” Jim McCann was asked, facetiously, if the company had just been lucky. He laughed. “None of it is luck. The harder you work, the luckier you get.” He went on to attribute success to lean administration and a 20

what we offer,” Courtney says. “We don’t have a lot of products that are somehow unique and that people can’t buy somewhere else. It might even be cheaper somewhere else. But we have people who know about a piece of equipment and can walk a customer through its operation. There is a wealth of knowledge in this small organization, both on the supply side and on the equipment side.” Hayward echoes that view. “There is no question that our business is built on our people. Customers can go anywhere down the road and buy the same thing, possibly at a better price. What makes us different is our team and the way we serve our customers. That’s what differentiates us.” Says McCann: “My father built the business on integrity. No one came to market with more integrity. We want to be known to our customers for having the highest degree of integrity. We are fortunate to have a strong brand in the market and are very proud and protective of it. “Case has a wonderful offering of products that afford dealerships

near fixation on customer satisfaction. “We are able to be lean at the top and to operate as a fairly flat organization, which allows us to react quickly,” McCann says. “And we care about our customers, care about their success. It sounds like a cliché but we put time and energy into focusing on customers and taking care of customers. We religiously track our customer referral scores. The scores tell us how many customers are willing to recommend us to their peers and good scores correlate highly with companies that are built to grow. We survey referrals every single month and talk about it.” Jay Courtney, sales manager for McCann’s equipment side of the business, says the customer focus is successful because of the expertise of McCann employees. “Case and McCann are not huge organizations, so we can get a lot of things done without a lot of red tape. There are not a lot of steps in the process. We have the products and we know how to sell them. “The reality is that, other than brand, there are a lot of places to buy 22

tremendous growth opportunities. The wholesale side of the business is very well positioned for the future. But our products don’t make us unique. Our locations aren’t unique. What makes us unique is our people. We have a lot of walkaround knowledge and people that are very hard-working and that is what separates us from our competitors.”

“Fifty years? Oh, I think so” Courtney says. “The blood lines are there and Jim McCann is his own guy. I see no reason the organization won’t still be there 50 years from now if we keep doing our jobs well.” Hayward believes the company’s new CEO “brings a new vision for us that is kind of refreshing. It is a renewed focus on growth and taking care of our customers to the Nth degree. I worked with Jim’s dad for many years and he taught me many things about this business. Others have helped me become professional. The company has a lot of integrity and I believe it will prosper for many, many years to come.” And will another half century of growth mean expansion outside the Chicago metropolitan area? Not necessarily, says McCann. “We very much want to grow this business in the next 50 years. But we have so much unrealized potential right here in this area. We have everything we can handle right here.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s website at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) CEG

***

So does McCann Industries have another 50 years in it? “Another 50 years? I think so,” says Kruepke. “I know I feel pretty good about the next 10 or 20 years.” “Absolutely,” says Roggeman without equivocation. “I think we are striving to really follow our mission statement to add value to all our business relationships. Being customer and employee-oriented is really the way we believe we can be successful. Happy employees equate to happy customers and we are committed to investing long-term in our associates.” 24
