GDOT Taps Jacobs to Provide Oversight for I-285 Project Jacobs has been selected by the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) to provide construction engineering and inspection services for roadway, bridge and safety improvements along Interstate 285 in the Atlanta metropolitan area. According to Jacobs, the work will support transportation projects in Fulton and Cobb counties within GDOT District 7, helping maintain mobility and improve safety along one of the region’s most heavily traveled highway corridors. The assignment will involve construction oversight, quality management and coordination among project teams. Jacobs also will use traffic data to help guide construction staging, lane closures and detour routes, with the goal of limiting congestion and minimizing disruptions to motorists during construction. The company plans to use its StreetLight traffic analytics capabilities to evaluate travel patterns and inform traffic-management decisions. According to Jacobs, combining traffic data with field experience will help project teams assess the potential effects of construction activities and make adjustments to maintain traffic flow. GDOT’s ongoing work along I-285 includes pavement rehabilitation and other infrastructure improvements intended to
address roadway conditions and support safer travel. According to GDOT’s project information database, one I-285
rehabilitation project covers approximately 7.2 mi. of the highway’s western side, extending from Collier Drive to Paces Ferry Road in Fulton and Cobb counties. The

work includes replacing existing concrete pavement, shoulders, concrete median barriers, glare screens and guardrails, as well as correcting sections with inadequate roadway cross slope. GDOT listed an estimated construction cost of approximately $194.9 million for that project in its December 2023 cost estimate. The agency’s project database identifies it as a separate project from the broader construction engineering and inspection services award announced by Jacobs. Jacobs’ assignment also includes an emphasis on environmental compliance and construction practices. The company said its work will support stormwater management, erosion control and other environmental requirements associated with transportation construction. The contract builds on Jacobs’ experience supporting GDOT transportation programs, according to the company. Its role will focus on helping the state deliver infrastructure improvements while managing the operational challenges of construction in a busy metropolitan corridor. The improvements are intended to strengthen regional connectivity, improve roadway safety and support continued growth across the Atlanta area. CEG
