The $435 million project that began in 2020 redesigned the interchange where three major thoroughfares come together: I-35, which connects Duluth to the Twin Cities and beyond; I-535, which crosses the Blatnik Bridge to Superior, Wisc.; and Highway 53 that travels north to the Iron Range and the Canadian border. The Twin Ports Interchange serves more than 80,000 vehicles daily, including over 5,000 heavy trucks.

The infrastructure is built for durability: the 52,000-squarefoot warehouse and shop floors are reinforced with microfiber and steel rebar. 57,500 square feet of exterior concrete paving is designed for heavy-duty storage of transformers, wire coils and heavy-duty truck traffic. To ensure operational resilience, precast concrete wall panels were utilized, providing both visual appeal and high-level protection against severe weather so the facility can service customers during power outages.
