Hello!

Hello! I hope you’re really well! As we are heading into the summer, our quietest time, it’s a great opportunity for the team and I to reflect on what we’ve achieved so far this year. I’m extremely proud that we’ve delievered our largest Luxury edition with fifty suppliers and fifty buyers back in February (Málaga pg. 10), we headed to Santa Monica, California in March for the first bespoke edition in the ‘Golden State’ and lastly, we returned to Slovenia for the third edition of Connections Wellbeing. In the last six months, I have really enjoyed exploring new destinations and meeting new faces, as well as returning to places I love and working with old friends! By the end of the summer, we’ll quickly be approaching our Weddings event in Puglia, our new launch for 2019. Shortly after, we’re heading to the untouched Azores for Adventure, followed by Meetings in the stunning Valle d’Aosta (very near my hometown!). Despite our busy schedule for the rest of the year, it is important for me to share that as we approach our fifth birthday (29 September), it is time for us to evolve and I couldn’t be more excited for this new phase of Connections. By January 2020, we will have transitioned from an eventbased organization to a private community - bringing our industry leaders even closer together. Please turn the page to read more about this next step. So, in the following pages is a little taster of what we’ve been up to and where we’re heading in the next few months... I can’t wait! Ciao!

A NEW ERA FOR CONNECTIONS The international private community for high-end travel executives

6

W

e’ve always believed that business is conducted between people, not companies, which is why we have pioneered The Connections Way. Its success has driven our decision to evolve. Connections is embarking on a new era from 2 January 2020. We will become the international private community for highend travel executives, with a focus on luxury, meetings incentives, wellbeing, adventure and weddings. Supported by the industry’s most reputable associations and partners, we have crafted an unrivalled 12-month inclusive calendar where global high-end buyers and leading suppliers are granted new, meaningful access to events around the world. 7

S

ince our launch in 2014, we’ve hosted 30 incredible events all over the world in the luxury, wellbeing, adventure, high-end meetings & incentives – and to mark our fifth birthday – the weddings sector.

From 2 January 2020, Connections will bring together members in a highly focused, timeefficient agenda, featuring customised networking meetings and a constantly evolving programme. Leading luxury travel buyers and suppliers can meet through signature events held twice a year, ConnecTalks, personal introductions, peer-to-peer meetups, tailor-made socials, and are granted access to mentoring, private social media groups and personal interviews around the world. 8

Over the past five years, we have pioneered The Connections Way a proven series of research-based proprietary methodologies and approaches designed to create long lasting business relationships between our delegates. But Connections was created to be more than just a place of meetings. We’ve become known and valued for our human approach to networking, becoming a versatile network that adapts to the lifestyle of our mobile decision makers. Our delegates can discover new business opportunities and establish new partnerships with the right people, all around the world; there is no limit to where and how our leaders meet to conduct business. Building upon the success and feedback of the past five years, we want to elevate the Connections product by transforming it into a private platform, shaped and owned by the people powering our industry. Whatever the sector we serve – wherever we do business in the world – the essence of Connections will always be the same: to offer an intimate and creative environment dedicated to nurturing business relationships.

Malaga ´

Coastal resorts, boutique hotels, chic dining experiences and a party atmosphere awating a fiesta, this revitalised southern Spanish city is vibrant with a growing luxury offering.

11

La Buena Vida

The Costa Del Sol’s luxurious side is shining through, as the region targets travellers who value the finer things in life

M

oorish remains lined with orange trees, palatial 1920s hotels, giant cazuela pots simmering with sun-ripened ingredients and freshly-caught seafood. Yacht-filled harbours, glittering nightlife, the highest concentration of Michelinstarred restaurants in any Spanish city (Marbella). For culturally-minded, foodobsessed luxury clients in need of some beach time with the right amount of bling, the Spanish region truly punches above its weight. In recent years, areas of Spain have been dealing with the effects of overtourism – overcrowding in popular tourist destinations. As a way of tackling this, many Spanish destinations –the region of Andalucia included – have been focusing their efforts on attracting luxury travellers. The idea is to gain the kind of visitors that are willing to engage with Spanish culture and invest more time and money into exploring its heritage. “Costa del Sol offers an authentic Spanish experience,” says Manolo Ortega, MICE and Golf Manager, Andalucia Tourism. “Andalucia has so many secrets to discover and there are many ongoing projects that demonstrate our commitment to the luxury sector.” A major moment for 12the region's luxury scene

was the 2017 reopening of the Gran Hotel Miramar where Connections Luxury took place earlier this year. Originally launched in 1926, the five-star deluxe property was renovated and relaunched as a member of the Leading Hotels of the World. It occupies a grand building in a prime sea-facing spot in Malaga’s historic La Caleta neighbourhood, amid 9,000 sqm of grounds and gardens with outdoor pools. “Our travellers come mainly from from North America, the UK and Spain,” says Andres Guerrero, Director of Sales, Gran Hotel Miramar. “They’re well-travelled guests who have seen everything, and they’re asking us for unique experiences.” The improved air connectivity of the Costa Del Sol region should encourage luxury travellers to fly from further afield. “We’re working very hard on opening up to new markets like India, Asia, Latin America, and building new connections with these

countries,” says Renée Kachler, Business Development Director for Costa Del Sol Tourist Board. Francisco Quereda, director of Malaga Convention Bureau, says: “Bringing the crème de la crème of luxury travel leaders to experience the region will have a great impact on developing this market for us.”

What does luxury mean to you? “As organisers, we must forget about what luxury was 30 years ago and think about what it is now. Today, it’s luxury to have time. To see the sunset. Luxury is about helping our clients do things they don’t normally have the time to do.” Teresa Broccoli, formerly director of international Sales, Presstour Travel Design, now director of MICE business at Vincci Hoteles

Medina Azahara, Córdoba.

Digital or Human-to-Human? Is the future of luxury in the hands of travel designers, or our artificially intelligent counterparts? Here’s how the debate went Connections Luxury in Málaga…

“Without the human touch, luxury is dead” - Mary Steadman, director of partners at LURA Lifestyle Management. “The touch and feel of luxury service is something you’ll never get from a machine, CRM system or an automated message. You feel it through the shake of a hand, a warm embrace when greeting and the look in one’s eye. A computer can not bring the kind of customisation that’s necessary for luxury. You can buy and do things online, but you can’t get to that level of detail that’s required for luxury clients. “Technology is here, and it’s changed the way we’re all operating. But in the luxury space, it will always remain important to connect face-to-face with your partners and clients in order to make the magic happen and build long-term client relationships. “Remember the old theory that, in conversation, we only ever hear 10% of the message through the words being spoken, and the rest is body language and tone of voice? I had an ultra high net-worth client from Australia who was very upset, so I called him to try and calm things down. We were on the phone and I said: ‘This isn’t working, would you like to go for lunch? I’ll meet you in London.’ I was a 1.5-hour train ride away, and I went and met him for three hours. He was very upset when we first sat down, but we had an amazing time. By the end of that meal, he’d become my number one client. And he continues to be today.”

“Technology can deliver things we can’t even mentally comprehend – let alone do ourselves” - Marc Mekki, technology entrepreneur and founder of Platinum Journeys. “Imagine folding a piece of paper 50 times over. How thick is the resulting stack of paper? The answer – if you were able to accomplish that physically – is that it would cover the distance between the earth and the sun, roughly 95 million miles. That doesn’t make a lot of sense, right? But what it illustrates is a flaw in human thinking compared with technology. It deals with the concept that we are alien to as an organic species – exponential growth. We’re linear thinkers – we tend to think that something improved by 50 times will be 50 times better, not a million times. But, that is the arc of modern technology We’re right at the cusp of this exponential curve, right before things really start to explode with technology over the next ten to thirty years. We are accelerating, and that’s where new platforms such as blockchain technology are coming from. But we’re yet to hit the top of the curve, where everything will really change. “We assume that some things are fundamentally human – such as creativity and communication, I often hear the phrase: ‘Artificial intelligence will never…’ Well, a piece of art generated by AI was sold at Christie’s last year for $435,000. What about music? Well, AI has written a piece of music that has been performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The next thing you’re going to see is Google Duplex - where a computer can make a phone call on behalf of a human to book a hair appointment. All of these things are happening now – before we’ve hit the curve." 15

DELEGATE DEBATE: THE OUTCOME After hearing both sides of the debate, delegates split into two – Team Human and Team Technology – to prepare an argument for either side. Team Human said luxury is about emotion, sympathy, understanding body language and physically sensing what clients need. This was counteracted by Team Technology, who proposed that luxury is about seamlessness and saving time, and these areas are where tech can offer a superior experience. They said technology is easier to manage than a team of people, with less capacity for error. Team Human then challenged technology’s ability to compute the intricacies of a luxury travel professional’s role. “Tell me, how can a machine deal with human irrational behaviour? How does a machine deal with knowing real cultural subtleties and differences? Does a machine have that second stomach – that feel factor, that intuition?” said Helen Beck from Crystal Cruises. Team Technology fired back: “I’m ubiquitous. I’m data-driven. I can offer personalised marketing at any given time – so I know when you’re going to be irrational, because I know your behaviour ahead of time, because I can predict it, anticipate it and work with it,” said [NAME?] Each team delivered compelling arguments, but in the end, our impartial judges felt Team Technology pipped Team Human to the post with the strength of their points. It’s startling to think how technology is starting to emulate human character, and to imagine what’s on the horizon. That’s not to say emotional intuition can ever be equalled by technology. Instead, it’s important that we stay aware of technology breakthroughs and learn how to harness it ourselves, using it to create a more seamless experience for travellers while never losing the personal touch. 16

A Spanish Debut

Anantara Villa Padierna Palace embodies modern luxury with its hotel-museum hybrid concept. The experience-led Anantara (anantara.com) hotel brand offers an elegant, romantic sanctuary filled with unique touches.

H

oused in a pink-hued Tuscan palace in the aptly named “Golf Valley” – with three award-winning golf courses in its midst – the property is moments from the beach, and within easy reach of Marbella, the mountain village of Benahavís and the charming town of Estepona. More than 1,200 artworks line the property’s walls – some dating back to the 1st Century AD. The entire building is littered with antiques, sculptures, pottery and decorative pieces from the owner’s private collection - it really is like staying in a museum. “Anantara was born in response to discerning travellers seeking luxury with a sense of indigenous discovery,” says Maria Gonzalez, communications manager for Anantara Villa Padierna Palace. "We’ve designed a portfolio of experiences that revisit the history of Andalusia and its culture.” The property enlists “gurus” to help guests connect with the destination on a deeper level through unforgettable experiences. These include flamenco dancing workshops, guided hiking and rafting around beautiful Benahavis and tours of nearby Roman and Moorish relics. The hotel’s 2,000 sqm Roman Bath-themed spa – inspired by the region’s roots – has won a slew of awards. And for weddings, it’s possible to have a ceremony in a breathtaking Roman amphitheatre, or on the hotel’s palm tree-fringed beach.

IN CONVERSATION WITH

Charlene & Cathy

OF CHARLOTTEJAMES TRAVEL DESIGN

A

family-run luxury travel business, sisters Charlene and Cathy launched CharlotteJames (the namesake of their mother and father) almost two years ago, and since then, they’ve not looked back. Offering exclusive travel – from private jets and yachts to luxury residences and unique itineraries – CharlotteJames strives to create meaningful experiences to allow their clients to learn and understand more about the world and themselves. The idea of CharlotteJames first presented itself when Charlene and Cathy were on holiday. “Cathy and I were skiing a while back,” Charlene explains, “and a good friend was talking about taking a private jet to a sporting event. Inevitably, we started talking about how we would do that – and in that moment we decided to launch our own travel design company.” Curating exceptional travel experiences is nothing new for the CharlotteJames sisters. They had a rich, cultural upbringing living in Italy, Japan, the Middle East and America, before Cathy found love and settled in London, while Charlene moved to Honolulu where she developed the Luxe Travel Hawai’i brand. Combined, they have over thirty years of experience developing extra-ordinary travel journeys and servicing the eli Charlene recently made the move to Austin Texas after three decades in Hawai’i, which she describes as a major undertaking. But the city’s palpable energy and cultural scene is something her family are very excited for. Still, despite living and working in different time zones, launching CharlotteJames has brought Charlene and Cathy even closer together. “You don’t very often see sisters working together in a business, but it’s been such a joy,” says Charlene, and it’s clear that she genuinely means it Their warm, personal approach is something that they’ve brought to the heart of CharlotteJames. Cathy explains, “No matter the reason for travel, for families or for brands, the essence of our business will always remain the

18

same: we place people first.” Unlike most businesses, they have purposefully chosen not to have an online presence. “We want to offer real discretion to our clients and grow organically by word of mouth,” says Cathy. “We believe in this market, it’s the best way to do it.” “We are really selective about who we work with,” continues Charlene. “We have a combination of corporate and leisure clients who we love, and so really enjoy putting together amazing experiences for them to create memories that will last a lifetime.” Before producing any itineraries, Charlene and Cathy will personally meet with their clients to truly find out what will make their travel journey a “haute couture experience”. Cathy tells us about a couple who have just returned home from celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary with a safari experience in Kenya. They also have a number of clients travelling to Japan later this year for the Rugby World Cup. Another holiday recently planned was for two ladies who are in business together and travel extensively. “They are very much interested in artisanal products and how they are made,” Charlene says. “We designed a cultural trip for them to Vietnam and Cambodia, with highlights that include visiting mat weaving villages, breaking bread at a local’s home, and hearing traditional folk songs performed by villages. They will also hike to one of the most amazing temples and have the temple to themselves for as long as they like.” Alongside business as usual, Charlene and Cathy are working on expanding their corporate incentives offering with some exciting projects lined up, including collaboration with a young and gifted vintner to curate a bespoke travel itinerary for his wine club. Keep up-to-date with Cathy and Charlene on instagram @charlottejamesadventures.

California

THE GOLDEN STATE OF LUXURY

20

21

22

Unburdened by tradition, California is the dream destination for free-spirited luxury travellers seeking authenticity “People are as much attracted to the culture of California as they are to the diversity of riches we have here,” says Caroline Beteta, President and CEO of Visit California. “It’s not just ‘I want to travel to California.’ It’s ‘I want to be Californian.’” California is a way of life. People worship the Golden State from afar for its sunny disposition, its healthy beach-centric lifestyle, and its seemingly endless Bucket List locations: The Hollywood Boulevard, San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, Yosemite National Park, Big Sur, San Diego (and those are just the ones everyone knows about…). Having enjoyed eight consecutive years of record growth, California remains the number one travel destination in the US, welcoming 280 million visitors each year. Its travel economy is 2.5 times the size of New York’s and five times as big as Hawaii’s. In recent years, the Golden State has been focusing its efforts on high networth travellers, where there’s huge opportunity. While the luxury market represents 5% of trips to California, it accounts for 13% of spending. And at a time where growth in the global experiential luxury market is outpacing general luxury, the Golden

23

State is well-placed to attract the world’s most affluent travellers, thanks to its abundance of authentic experiences. “We launched a task force five years ago to make sure that when we rolled out to the luxury pillar, we did it in a research-based way to help inform where we wanted to be,” says Beteta. “It led to us launching under the premise of the Golden State of Luxury.” How does luxury translate in California? “Our version of luxury may be different from other experiences worldwide,” says Beteta. “Californians are laid-back and casual. We’re approachable, we’re always seeking new things, and we’re not embarrassed by failure. We’re culinary trendsetters, and we want people to experience this right at the source, at our farms. We produce 82% of our nation’s wine. Wellness is part of our everyday landscape. All of this is the premise of the Golden State of Luxury – California is about living, remaining youthful, organic and freespirited.” The Golden State faced a challenge last year, when wildfire season devastated communities in the Sierra Nevada foothills and Los Angeles shoreline. The international media hype didn’t reflect the nuances of the situation – human error or vandalism are not the only cause. “Wildfires in California are a natural phenomenon,” says Beteta. “Nine times out of ten, it really is Mother Nature at work. Our job is to work with our destination partners and 24

change the narrative.” Visit California is proactively positioning the Golden State as the luxury destination of the moment – particularly for wealthy millennials. “We’re targeting the top 33% of household income, which represents 108 million individuals across the globe,” says Beteta. “Millennials make up 36% of our global brand target audience – and millennials with family are an extra bonus. [They] love to travel for Instagrammable moments – and we have a plethora of those waiting for them.”

Clockwise from above: Connections California delegates enjoy a beach party, the rides on Santa Monica pier, learn to surf and stroll along the sand during meetings

“"You get to taste, smell and feel what Santa Monica is really about

Santa Monica's Soul Hollywood’s playground combines exclusive experiences with the right amount of edge Set along one of California’s most iconic stretches of shoreline, Santa Monica’s award-winning dining scene, natural beauty and world-class hotel collection blend together to create a laid-back sense of luxury that today’s travellers crave – with enough buzz and experiences to satisfy active types. “We’re Hollywood’s playground,” says Misti Kerns CEO and President of Santa Monica Travel and Tourism. “There is something about this beachside city that sparks bold ideas – from the athletes who develop the

latest fitness trends, to chefs creating fusion cuisines, to the tech companies that have declared our shores along Marina del Ray and Playa del Ray, Silicon Beach.” How should luxury travellers experience Santa Monica’s soul? “Get your toes in the sand, surf with a prosurfer, do yoga on the beach, enjoy the view from the rooftop of a hotel,” says Kerns. “Luxury travellers – just like everyone else – want to have options. And I think we provide a very good menu.” 25

Don't Leave Without... A NATURAL RETREAT Breathe in the fresh air and explore the trails around national parks– such as Joshua Tree, Yosemite and Redwood. An escape to the wine lands of Sonoma and Napa Valley in a classic car reveals another side of the Golden State’s diverse landscape – Pure Luxury Transportation (pureluxury. com) arranges bespoke tours. AN EXCLUSIVE PARTY The Golden State’s year-round sun has spawned a glitzy al fresco party culture. There are plenty of suitably opulent villas and gorgeous beach houses that can be hired for clients to host their own. At Connections California, we got a taste of the West Coast high life. During our time in Santa Monica, we hosted drinks at three such venues: Annenberg Beach House (annenbergbeachhouse. com), Viceroy Santa Monica (viceroyhotelsandresorts.com) and The Getty Villa (getty.edu). CREATIVE, ORGANIC DINING EXPERIENCES Farm-to-table dining is the way to do it in California. A focus on everything organic has inspired a light, summery cuisine. Our pick is the Lobster Restaurant 26

(thelobster.com). Overlooking Santa Monica Pier, and run by the brilliant chef Govind Armstrong, it serves up handcrafted cocktails and spiny lobster dishes creatively presented along with seasonal ingredients. THE ROAD TRIP OF A LIFETIME “The future of luxury travel in California is going to be all about road trips,” says Leona Reed, Associate Vice President of Global Marketing for Visit California. “We’re going to be combining the abundance of culinary experiences with a journey that a customer will take all over the state – going deeper into the destination and finding the hidden gems.”

California'sLuxury Evolution What do today’s luxury travellers want – and how does California deliver?

We asked Californian suppliers and destination management organisations to share ideas with buyers about the mindset of today’s luxury travellers – and how California can give them what they wish for. Here are some snippets from the roundtable discussions at Connections California: Why are clients travelling to California? “Natural beauty, outdoor actvities, the weather, the beach and shopping. And we know a lot of them come here for wine and food!” Linsey Gallagher, CEO Visit Napa Valley What are some of California’s greatest wellness options? “Tying our gorgeous amenities and wellness programmes to the community and to California’s 42 miles of beaches and 600 miles of trails.” Ed Fuller, CEO Orange County Visitors Association

Since time is the new luxury for high networth individuals, how are you helping them maximise their time while travelling? “It’s about educating the counsellors so they know the client – better than the client knows themselves. And pre-empting, making sure they’re aware that, for example, Valentines Day is coming up, so something special can be planned. But really, it’s about listening and understanding.” Kathy Janega-Dykes, CEO Visit Santa Barbara Have Californian suppliers seen a change in what clients are requesting to see or do? “Take wine, as an example. People travel here for the wineries, but they want to understand how the grapes are grown, to talk to the winemaker, to make wine, to understand everything about the ecosystem from start to finish – not just go to experience wine. It’s a good example of how luxury travellers are looking at things differently. Opulence isn’t really out there anymore.” Joe Terzi, CEO San Diego Tourism Authority

The Power of Nature on Health & Wellbeing

For Slovenia, wellbeing is all about the environment, and the nation is leading the global green tourism revolution

S

lovenians don’t like to stay in-in. A nation of beekeepers, hikers, and a striking number of Olympic medalists, they stay active and in the open air. They make the most of the rich tapestry of different terrain they’ve been blessed with, including a Mediterranean coast, the Alps, lowlands and national parks. “All the best things in Slovenia happen outdoors,” says Karmen Novarlic, Head of the Slovenia Tourist Board. “Our country offers diverse meaningful encounters with nature. About 60% of it is covered in forest, and a third of its territory is protected. Wherever you go there are streams, rivers, waterfalls, lakes and springs with healing mineral water. We have 15 spa resorts here that offer, green, active and healthy experiences for body, mind and soul.” At Connections Wellbeing in Slovenia, which took place amid the healing backdrop of Terme Olimia (terme-olimia. com), we wanted to use the incredible natural riches of Slovenia to highlight the enormous role that nature has to play in wellbeing travel. So many studies have made the connection between nature and mental health – research has shown, for example, that forests promote lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol and lower blood pressure than city environments.

As the environment is so integral not only to Slovenia’s wellbeing tourism, but to its everyday life, the nation makes a stellar effort to protect its natural assets. So much so, the Slovenia Tourist Board has created Slovenia Green – a green tourism scheme, with a blueprint that puts sustainability at the heart of all development. Part of the scheme is the nation’s very own sustainability credentials, called Slovenia Green Destination, which has three tiers (Bronze, Silver and Gold). To obtain it, areas within Slovenia need to meet a list of criteria set out by Slovenia Green. Agencies, parks and accommodation providers must first have an internationally recognised green certificate (such as LEED or Green Globe), before being separately verified by Slovenia Green. The regions of Podcetrtek and Rogaska Slatina, for example – where Connections Wellbeing took place – have both achieved Slovenia Green Destination Gold Status. At a time where we’re starting to see a tipping point in consumers’ attitudes towards sustainability, Slovenia Green is a strong competitive advantage – something that can easily be communicated to travellers. It also sets a precedent for tourist boards across the world, creating a model that will hopefully become adopted by other nations. 33

Connecting the Dots... We asked delegates at Connections Wellbeing to debate about engaging luxury wellbeing travellers with the health of the planet. Here’s how the conversation went:

"Relieving fear-based travel. I think about water. Here in Slovenia, the water is fantastic. They label the water by the date. It's really important to know what's drinkable water nowadays. We have all got so afraid of bad water that we only drink plastic bottled water."

OF THE RETREAT COSTA RICA An early pioneer of the raw food movement, Diana Stobo’s expertise and passion for healing people began with herself. As well as being owner and creator of The Retreat Costa Rica and Truth Bar, Diana has since become an award-winning author, classically trained chef and nutrition expert, and works to continually empower people to live life well. How did your path to wellbeing start? I was 34 years old. One night, I was rushed to hospital with a bleeding ulcer. With all of life’s stresses, I was a mess. So I started to discover the foods that were causing me illnesses and I eliminated all six of them immediately. Within ten days, I lost ten pounds. All my pain went away. In six months, I’d healed my thyroid, my gut issues, everything. And then I went even further. The next step was to go raw. And I got better and better.

ne of the three major European professional cycling stages, together with the Tour de France and Vuelta a España, is the Giro d’Italia, which kicked off in Bologna this year and ran through the stunning Italian countryside. Alongside 18 WorldTour teams and 4 wildcard teams, was the Giro E, an amateur E-bike Giro experience that allowed cycling enthusiasts and non-professionals the experience of riding in a cycling stage race. Taking part in the first ever Giro E was #TeamEnit. Sponsored by the Italian Tourist Board (italia.it) and under the leadership of Italian cycling champion Massimiliano Lelli, #TeamENIT was composed of 33 tour operators, influencers, bloggers and journalists brought together to take on various stages of the challenge. Executive Director, Mr. Bastianelli notes “foreign tourists love to explore Italy on a bike” and the Italian Tourist Board have noticed a growing interest in dedicated cycling tour packages, particularly from Canada and Korea. This international cycling event was therefore was the perfect occasion for the tourist board to promote cycling tourism in Italy.” Joining #TeamEnit for the first three days was Connections event attendee, Renato Villa Real, Co-Managing Partner of luxury travel boutique, On My Way Travel (omwtravel.com.br). On the first day, Renato and #TeamENIT completed a 105 KM cycle on E-bikes from Usella to Fucecchio, east of Florence. The second day saw them cycle 114 KM from San Gimignano down to the coast at Orbetello, which Renato describes as a “really beautiful, fast and fun course” and on the third day, the team made their way to Vetralla.

40

Renato's experience... “Giro d’Italia really was a dream come true to me!”

“The hospitality and the attention from the ENIT team was impeccable and it was a real pleasure getting to meet them.” “Also the entire team of riders got along really well and that made a huge difference. We had so much fun! Getting to know some of Italy's hidden spots while cycling, and on the same course as the Giro was something words can't describe. It was also really special to see people from all over the world, along with locals from the villages and cities as we cycled through, cheering on us. There were entire classes of small children with their teachers during school breaks, groups of friends on vacations, people on their way to work, and elderly people, who came out to see us pass by. Italians of all ages really love cycling and it was amazing to experience all that energy! “I love the Connections’ way of doing business! I couldn’t agree more that when you remember an experience, you remember the people you lived that experience with. Also sharing the testimonials of such unique memories is so effective when selling to our clients.”

Puglia In the heel of Italy's famous boot and often regarded as one of the most romantic destinations in the world. we're exploring Puglia, where the inagural Connections Weddings will take place...

“

Authentic, uncharted and welcoming says Alfredo Di Liguori, Marketing Manager of Pugliapromozione, when asked how to sum up the southern Italian region. With historic town’s brimming with extravagant churches, extensive olive groves and picturesque beaches, it’s no surprise that there has been a steady increase of international visitors to the region over the last ten years. Found in the heel of Italy’s boot, along the Adriatic coast, Puglia has always been popular with northern Italians, particularly for a summer escape. However, in recent years, this romantic region has gained international recognition, particularly in the weddings sector. “Tying the knot is a serious matter here” explains Alfredo. “Luscious food and wine, amazing locations, live music, fireworks, artistic floral displays and the haute couture local wedding dress industry” all combine to make it a popular destination for weddings. Couple the historic and traditional elements of Puglia, with the growth in the pictureperfect world of Instagram and the increasing importance the millennial generation are placing on experiences, it’s no wonder that destination weddings in Puglia are extremely popular. “More and more international people want to get married in Italy in exclusive locations and Puglia has a lot to offer to these special customers” says De Liguori. The region offers a variety of locations ideal for a wedding celebration. Masserias, ancient churches, cathedrals, palazzos and beaches provide an eclectic choice to suit all tastes... Exploring Southern Puglia with Inventure Life

This page: Furnirussi Tenuta

Ahead of Connections Weddings in September, Head of Operations Evangeline Estrella and Marketing Manager, Gemma Fitchett visited a few of Salento's highlights with owner Luigi De Santis, founder of Inventure LIfe DMC.

Furnirussi Tenuta Conde Nast Traveller named it one of the best hotels in Puglia and the Telegraph Travel dubbed the modern-day masseria as a “bubble of luxury”. A popular retreat amongst high-profile guests, Furnirussi Tenuta (furnirussi.it) is a serene oasis just kilometres away from Otranto, the famous "Porta d'Oriente". Built and run by the De Santis family, this bright white hotel is nestled within open landscape, surrounded by an extensive fig farm (the largest organic plantation in Europe) olive groves and fruit trees - all of which are used as part of their menu. Champions of tradition and authentic hospitality, Furnirussi Tenuta will be a host hotel during the inaugural Connections Weddings this September.

46

Tenuta Lucagiovanni Immersed in the southern Italian countryside, in olive and citrus groves sits the nineteenth-century Tenuta Lucagiovann. With ancient trees, Italian gardens and Lecce stone walls, it is no wonder that this elegant Tenuta is one of the most popular locations for weddings in Salento. Also home to chocolatier and event extradinaire, Maglio Eventi (maglioeventi.com), this unique property will host the Connections Weddings closing gala dinner, which is shaping up to be a truly exceptional evening.

Tenuta Centoporte Charming and discreet, this quaint hotel offers discerning guests privacy, simplicity and elegance. Taking it’s name from the nearby Centoporte Abbey, Tenuta Centoporte (tenutacentoporte. it) oozes tradition and culture. With 37 rooms, a private spa, extensive Mediterranean grounds all only a few kilometres from the sea, guests can fully unwind in this Italian sanctuary. Tenuta Centoporte will also be a host hotel during Connections Weddings.

Patrizia Ermetici

OF JOAN ESTRADA SPECIAL WEDDINGS

A

head of Connections Weddings in Puglia, we caught up with Patrizia Ermetici from Joan Estrada Special Events to hear some key insight into the billion dollar industry... Tell us a little bit about yourself and your role at Joan Estrada Special Weddings. My beloved home city of Milan, coupled with Paris and other fashion capitals of the world, have all inspired my 25-year career. I worked as a Fashion Consultant with global luxury brands including, Gucci, Prada, Armani, Fendi, Alexander McQueen, Donna Karan New York, Roberto Cavalli, Valentino and Helmut Lang. Working with such high-end, luxury brands taught me that a celebration is more than just hiring a full-service event and production company. It is about the finer details. At Joan Estrada Special Weddings, I work with brides to turn their wedding dreams into their reality. My finger is always on the pulse of the latest trends in food, decor and entertainment, constantly focusing on the personalised details that make each event a one-of-a-kind. My team and I are extremely detailed and attentive. This enables us to create exquisite events, masterfully produced and distinctively designed. What do you believe is particularly unique about Joan Estrada Special Weddings? An innate sense of style and the ability to translate concepts into reality has elevated Joan Estrada Special Weddings to the top of their field. We combine a wide knowledge of the industry with an extraordinary commitment to excellence and the unique ability to create completely personalised, unforgettable events. Our headquarters are in Barcelona, Spain, which is the perfect base to provide a full range of event services to a discerning clientele. Why did you choose to partner with Connections for the launch of the Weddings Edition 2019? Why impact do you think Connections Weddings will have? Over the past few years, I have attended a few Weddings Congress’ and larger exhibitions, but

48

none of them put the emphasis on the personal relationship. Connections Weddings will give buyers and suppliers the opportunity to connect and create long-term relationships over shared experiences. Also, the educational sessions throughout the programme are a brilliant way for attendees to learn about the industry. What appeals to you about the Connections Way of doing business? Connections believe in people and their power to connect. I love this. When working on a wedding for a couple, when you are planning such a significant and personal event for them, you must know them in order to make it perfect. Connections aims to connect people and provides them the space to get to know each other, which is essential for success. What inspires you about the wedding industry? The opportunity to make a bride’s dreams come true. Are you noticing any trends in what your clients are asking for at the moment? This depends on which country the couples are from. Religion makes a big difference between all of them. Indian weddings are normally more respecting with traditional rules. European and American couples are looking for new

experiences, new destinations, unknown, unusual; they want to celebrate with parents and very close friends. How do you think the industry is changing? What does the future hold? I believe that only the professional wedding planners who have created a strong partnership with colleagues all over the world will have the chance to continue to grow in this industry. How have you adapted your offering in recent years, and why? Our formula has not changed that much. It is essential that you listen to your client’s wants and needs. This will give you all the information you need to create their perfect event or wedding. Tell us about one of your favourite client memories. All the weddings I work on are special and unique to me. I work with couples for one or two years when planning their wedding... you cannot forget any experience! What does luxury mean to you? Luxury must be an emotional experience, untouchable, it goes deeper, under the skin... into your soul. To hear more from Patrizia and learn about Joan Estrada Special Events ( joanestradaevents.com), join us at Connections Weddings, 15-18 September 2019.

Europe’s best kept secret

N

ine exotic islands scattered 800 miles west of the Iberian Peninsula make up the Azores archipelago. Far-flung in the Atlantic, this autonomous region of Portugal is known for its crater lakes, steaming volcanic waters and dramatic landscapes. Adventurous souls will find the Azores islands the perfect playground. Dubbed the Hawaii of the Atlantic, and still largely unknown, this remote destination offers a multitude of world-class activities. The largest of the nine islands, and home to most of the Azorean population is São Miguel. Known as the ‘green island’, thanks to the luscious untamed greenery and rich terrain, São Miguel’s enviable landscape makes it “the perfect island for discovering the Azores” (Lonely Planet, May 2019). To the west of the island are the twin blue and green lakes, which sit in the enormous volcanic crater of Sete Cidades. To the south sits the region’s capital, Ponta Delgada. Full of charm and history, the city is brimming with Portuguese colonial buildings; churches, monuments and a 16th-century fort allowing for many a postcard moment. The other eight islands will not disappoint either. The archipelago also boasts two UNESCO World Heritage Sites; the Pico island vineyard, a 987-hectare site with a viniculture dating back to the 15th century, and the town of Angra do Heroismo on the island of Terceria. This cultural site was an obligatory stop for fleets travelling between equatorial Africa, the East and the West Indies in the 15th century and is linked to maritime explorations that established the great civilizations in history. For more information on the Azores, visit visitazores.com. Top: Sete Cidades by Isa Jokela Gomes Above: Humphrey Muleba Bottom: Joe Leahy

55

For the thrill-seekers & adventure lovers “What few people know is that the Azores is Europe’s true adventure destination” explains António Padeira, Turismo de Portugal (turismodeportugal.pt). Whatever the weather and whatever the season, the rich and dramatic terrain is the perfect setting for adrenalin-inducing experiences, both on land and sea. The impressive swell of the Atlantic allows for exhilarating sailing trips, surf sessions and coasteering around the archipelago. On calmer days, the Azores is the perfect place to see whales, dolphins and other large sea animals. Thanks to their position in the Atlantic; a third of the way between Portugal and North America and the subtropical climate, the Azores are the permanent home or point of passage for more than a third of the world’s whale and dolphin species. The jagged, volcanic nature of the islands make it perfect for jeep safaris, canyoning through river gorges and waterfalls and hiking through the luscious greenery. Pico mountain on Pico island is the tallest summit in Portugal, standing at 2,351 metres. While climbing the mountain is challenging, from the top, trekkers can enjoy a spectaular view of the surrounding islands. For more information about what to do in the Azores, visit futurismo.pt.

Courmayeur's charm... A

t the foot of the Mont Blanc (Monte Bianco), and overlooked by the Matterhorn (Mont Cervino), Monte Rosa and a few of Europe’s other highest peaks, lies the exclusive ski resort of Courmayeur in Valle d'Aosta. Close to the Swiss and French borders, high in the Western Alps of northern Italy - the highest region in Italy - Courmayeur is full of character and surrounded by spectacular scenery. With slopes for intermediates and heliskiing and off-piste opportunities for experts, it is no surprise that Courmayeur is hugely popular amongst snow-lovers. However, the mild temperatures of the summer months also lend itself well to other kinds of adventures. Hiking, paragliding, mountain biking and ballooning are a few of the “sixty different experiences available in the region”, says Andrea Tassini, co-founder of Allure Alps (allurealps.com). “Whether winter or summer, there is something for everyone." Experts in mountain experiences, Tassini and his team recommend that visitors try sleeping in a castle, climbing down a crevasse, flying over the Matterhorn, dining in a gourmet restaurant at 3000m or skiing down the 21km ski slope. It is easy to understand Courmayeur's appeal to families and young, adventurous couples seeking a holiday outdoors given the nature and range of activities available. More recently however, there has been a noticeable growth in meetings and incentive groups heading to the mountains. After opening in 2015, Allure Alps saw the potential for corporate trips to the region, and quickly opened their MICE division. Now core to their business, the team work with top brands including Chanel, P&G, BNP, Sanofi and Mont Blanc, to create tailor-made experiential events. When asked about the most memorable experience they’ve created for a client, Andrea reminisces on a glamping trip, which took 190 people to stay in igloos in the woods. Connections Meetings will take place in Courmayeur on the 15-18 November. For more information please visit weareconnections.com.

ravelling to Courmayeur and the Aosta Valley always feels like coming home. As a teenager, I spent every summer there at my Grandmother’s house, exploring the mountains and lapping up her hearty, homemade cooking. This time though, I was to experience another, special side of Courmayeur. Located on the slopes of Mont Blanc – just next door to my old home - stands the impressive Le Massif Courmayeur (lemassifcourmayeur.com). This 80-room hotel and chalet is without doubt an inspiring tribute to Italian hospitality. Stepping inside, there is this wonderful sense of calm. Logged ceiling and wood panelling, plush furniture and contemporary lines are brought together with the delicate scent of word burning. It’s clear that Italian architects, Fabrizio Gandolfo and Inart Studio truly considered the surroundings, combining alpine architecture and natural materials with minimalist elegance. It’s eco-friendly with style. I was immediately welcomed and directed to relax by the fire and enjoy a complimentary drink – anything I’d like, no rush; the hotel will take my luggage to my room. I could have sat there all day, listening to the crackle of the fire and snug under a throw. Noticing how tired I was, Alessandro, one of the members of staff, came over and offered to escort me to my room with my welcome

Manager and a bottle of local wine was placed on the side – impressive since I only notified the hotel that I would be staying just 2 hours before. Marcello Cicalò, you wonder! Marcello, Director of Sales & Marketing for the Italian Hospitality Collection, has long been a friend of Connections, and we always look forward to welcoming him at our events. But meeting him in Courmayeur, my second home, was very special. Along with Andrea Tassini, Co-founder of Allure Alps, we explored the opportunity of an exciting collaboration, all while enjoy a local cheese making experience. It is of course, the Connections Way of doing business! Before I left, I stopped by one of my old haunts. The Via Roma shopping area, which is not far from Le Massif Courmayeur, is home to beautiful jewellers, your favourite luxury names and of course little shops that offer Panettiere bread and local biscuits. It was amazing to see how it’s developed over the years, but it was even better to bump into three familiar faces who still owned their boutiques 25 years on. It’s clear that there is a real sense of community in Courmayeur. With the new comes the protection of old, to preserve traditions whilst helping its future. I can’t wait to return.

All eyes on Tokyo In a few short months, celebrations will begin across Japan to signify the beginning of the 2019 Rugby World Cup. A first for both Japan and Asia. Fast-forward another ten months to July 2020, Japan will host yet another, larger international sporting event, the summer Olympics.

67

W

ith eyes firmly fixed on Japan, literally - the Rugby World Cup is on track to be the most widely-viewed, most digitally-engaged rugby event of all time – the country is stepping up and maximising on the enormous impact this “unrepeatable opportunity” will have on their inbound travel market says Masashi Imai, tourist promotion department manager for the Tokyo Convention and Visitors Bureau (TCVB) (tcvb.or.jp). In light of this increased exposure, Japan’s capital Tokyo is making moves to position itself as a must-see destination for the high-end luxury traveller. Imai explains that the TCVB are “working hard to build on Japan’s international offering and showcase the luxury travel facilities as much as possible” to cement its reputation within the industry. Several initiatives have been approved by the city’s tourism board to help. The recently launched timelesstokyo. com is a website of model itineraries, recommended hotels (including the Aman and the Four Seasons) and a range of local contacts for a variety of experiences tailored to the high-end market. “We felt that many luxury travellers are looking for a genuine experience, something authentic that money-cannotbuy,” Yuya explains. Whether this is a formal tea ceremony at Sado Kaikan in traditional dress, bathing in a Japanese onsen or eating fresh sushi for breakfast in Tsukiji, the interest in experiencing

68

Japan’s culture is key for today’s luxury market. One particular experience that many tourists are keen to enjoy is the Sakura season. Taking place in April, visitors flock from far and wide to see the cherry trees bloom across Japan. The Sakura is so spectacular that the TCVB note approximately 2.9 million international visitors come to Japan in April, roughly 10-15% higher than any other month. But if spring travel is not possible, the TCVB recommend visiting in late October to early December, a great time to enjoy the autumn foliage. The luxury market is still very new for Tokyo. It is for this reason that the TCVB have decided to partner with Connections to host a first-of-its-kind event; to showcase the best Japanese product to key international luxury buyers over three days of networking in the capital. “We have noticed that there is such a strong demand by clients, but not many buyers have visited Tokyo yet,” Yuya explains. “We are hoping that the Connections event in February 2020 (right between the two crucial sporting events) will educate the buyers and give them first hand experiences in our city, while also allowing them to connect with our suppliers to nurture Japan as a luxury destination.” To join us as a luxury global buyer at Connections Tokyo 2020, please contact Alex Roca.
