How to Begin Knitting

Your First Sweater 1 CHOOSE A PATTERN

Construction varies: some sweaters are knit in the round on circular needles, and some are knit in pieces and sewn together. Both have their pluses and minuses; read the pattern description to see what is required. Look for a pattern that uses basic stitches, minimal shaping, and straightforward instructions. A top-down, seamless sweater can be especially beginner-friendly. Most importantly, choose a style you love (and will actually wear)! A simple sweater in a color you’re excited about will make those first few knitting sessions much more enjoyable.

2 CHOOSE A YARN

For your first sweater, choose a yarn that is easy to work with and has good stitch definition. Also keep in mind how you will wear the final project. If it will be worn next to skin, go with a soft yarn like Swish or Modish Merino. For outerwear, try a hard-wearing yarn like Wool of the Andes. It’s always a good rule of thumb to go with the yarn the pattern suggests. And make sure you are matching the gauge set by the pattern!

3 CHOOSE A NEEDLE

Most sweaters can be knit on circular needles but if it is knit in the round, make sure you have the correct size cable. If it is a sweater that is knit flat and seamed, you can use straight needles. Wood is an excellent choice for first sweaters, since it can be “grabby” and slow down your stitches. Metal and aluminum are also excellent, but can be slippery.

MEASURE YOUR BUST

Wear a fitted top and wrap your tape measure around the fullest part of your bust. Don’t pull too tight, you want a comfortable, natural measurement.

2 DECIDE YOUR EASE

Ease = how roomy or fitted your sweater feels.  0–2" positive ease: tailored and close to the body.  2–4" positive ease: comfy, classic fit.  4–6" or more: oversized and cozy.

3 MATCH FINISHED SIZE

Look under “Finished Measurements” in your pattern. Choose the size that best matches your bust + ease number.

4 DOUBLE-CHECK FIT

Compare other measurements, like sleeve length, shoulder width, or total sweater length, to your body or a favorite garment.

5 MAKE MODIFICATIONS (IF NEEDED)

If something’s off, size up or down or adjust the pattern for a custom fit. You’re the designer here!

Parts of a Sweater Bust Circumference: Measured around the fullest part of the bust. Shoulder: Measured from neckline to shoulder seam. Hem: Ribbing or edging at the bottom of the body. Neckline/Collar: Ribbing or patterning around the neck.

Neck Opening: The opening that lets your head through. Armhole Depth: Measured from shoulder tip straight down to the armpit. Sleeve: Measured by both length and circumference. Cuff: Ribbing or border around the wrist. 1.800.574.1323

Knitted Knockers Knitted Knockers are handmade breast prostheses for women recovering from mastectomies or lumpectomies. They’re soft, lightweight, and far more comfortable than traditional forms, fitting easily into a regular bra. We’re thrilled to share that Shine Sport and Memento are now approved for making Knitted Knockers. And despite the name, they aren’t just knitted — they can be crocheted too, making them a wonderful beginner-friendly project for anyone wanting to give back. As of October 2026, more than one million Knitted Knockers have been gifted, each one made with care, compassion, and love by makers like you.

Barbara, what inspired you to change lives through Knitted Knockers? The impact of receiving this gift of a soft, light, huggable knitted knocker made by a friend literally changed my life. I put that in my bra and reengaged with life. I was Barb, not Barb with cancer but Barb. We could be that caring friend to them. You’ve inspired knitters all over the world but who inspires you? Myra Woods knitwear designer’s story inspires me! Every knitter has that one tool they can’t live without. What’s yours? A crochet hook when knitting to pick up and fix dropped stitches/mistakes, not that I ever have any. :) If someone listening wants to start a local Knitted Knockers group, what’s the best first step? I would encourage them to go to the website, knittedknockers.org. Everything you want to know and more is there.

Needle Know-How Your guide to choosing the perfect pair. The right needles can turn “just okay” knitting into “I never want to put this down.” We’re here to help you figure out what feels best in your hands, works with your yarn, and keeps every stitch enjoyable.

Interchangeable Circulars What they are: A set of needle tips that connect to different cable lengths. One pair of tips with lots of cords gives you endless project options. Why knitters love them: They are flexible, customizable, and ready for almost anything, from hats and shawls to sweaters and blankets. One set can handle most of your knitting life. Use them when: You want the freedom to switch cord lengths, need extra room for larger projects, or want a versatile tool that grows with you.

Knit Tip Try short interchangeable tips and cables for sleeves, socks, and children’s knits!

36

FR EE SHIPPING ON US ORDERS OV ER $75

Fixed Circulars What they are: Needle tips permanently attached to a single cord length. Lightweight, simple, and ready to go. Why knitters love them: No swapping parts, no extra pieces, just grab and knit. Great for Magic Loop, hats, cowls, and almost everything in between. Use them when: You want something simple and fuss-free, especially for knitting in the round.

Straight Needles What they are: The classic knitting needles you picture in every cartoon, two straight sticks with stoppers on one end and points on the other. Why knitters love them: Comforting, familiar, and great for flat knitting. Perfect for beginners or simple projects that grow in your lap. Use them when: You’re learning and want something simple to hold or when knitting flat pieces like scarves.

Double Pointed Needles What they are: A set of short needles with points on both ends. The sock knitter’s classic tool. Why knitters love them: They’re perfect for small, circular projects and give you clear control over each section. No cords, no loops, just you and the stitches! Use them when: You’re knitting small projects like socks, mittens, sleeves, or toys, especially when circulars feel too big.
