Chanukah, unlike many other Jewish holidays, is pretty much a onepony show. There is no Seder, no required festive meal, and no forbidden activities (like those associated with other Festivals & Shabbat: driving, working, carrying, etc.). Along with a handful of liturgical additions - the primary ritual of Chanukah is lighting the candles. In fact, almost every chapter on Chanukah in Jewish law expounds various details about candles: why do we light the candles, what kind of candles, who lights them, where do we light them, and when is the choice time for lighting candles?
Perhaps the most fascinating for me personally is the directive that our Chanukiot (Chanukah Menorahs) should not be similar to a bonfire (Shulhan Arukh, Orach Chayim, 671:4). That is to say, they should be in a straight line across, so each and every candle can be individually discerned when looking directly at it. If the candles are arranged in a circle, or if the flames are combined, it would be impossible to differentiate between the lights. The legal principle behind this directive (and the legal principle behind almost all the laws related to lighting the Chanukiah) is pirsumei nissa, or publicizing the miracle. By allowing each person to see the distinct light of each candle we simultaneously recall the story of Chanukah and offer the chance, and challenge, to experience the miracle anew. The idea of an individual candle or a single flame in our tradition reaches beyond just the Chanukah candle. Before Passover, our tradition commands us to remove all of our leaven (chametz) from our possession. This is achieved through the ancient practice of using a single candle to search each crack and crevice in our homes, a job that a large flame or torch could not easily accomplish. The individual candle does not only function practically, it is also a reminder that the spiritual cleaning for Passover, the removal of our internal chametz (often understood to be excessive pride and hubris), cannot be done

with a superficial once-over. The small flame, the dim light, takes us another step deeper to access the space of our psyche that we are more hesitant to engage. Rabbi Mordechai Yosef of Isbitza, known as the Mei HaShiloach (18001854), embellishes this point, exploring the difference between a torch and a single flame. He claims that while the Torah, represented by a torch, is capable of refining the whole person over time, an individual mitzvah, or a single flame can penetrate the depths of one’s immediate religious experience. The Mei HaShiloach comments that he needed this particular mitzvah -- a candle, as it were -- to replenish that place in his soul in which he saw himself as deficient. Each of us may also have a specific mitzvah that moves us in a unique way, and forces us to open up to the world in a fresh way through the lens of Judaism and its minor and major miracles. Viewing the candles collectively arouses in us an awareness of potential for future growth. Yet each Chanukah candle represents a specific moment in our lives, a specific mitzvah that penetrates us, or a miracle that we have yet to allow ourselves to experience. By keeping them separate and distinct the task of recognizing each one is realistic.
So I ask you - what will you recall as you light each candle this Chanukah? What miracle will the light help you recognize? How can each candle kindle your soul?

As Jews, we are all taught the story of Hanukkah: in 165 BCE Judah Maccabee (literally “Judah the Hammer”) and his four brothers led the Jewish revolt over the Seleucid Empire of Syria and its King Antiochus IV Epiphanes. The Temple was liberated and rededicated. The festival of Hanukkah was instituted to celebrate this event. Judah ordered the Temple to be cleansed, a new altar to be built in place of the polluted one and new holy vessels to be made. According to the Talmud, unadulterated and undefiled pure olive oil with the seal of the high priest was needed for the menorah in the Temple, which was required to burn throughout the night every night. The story goes that one flask was found with only enough oil to burn for one day, yet it burned for eight days, the time needed to prepare a fresh supply of kosher oil for the menorah. An eight-day festival was declared by the Jewish sages to commemorate this miracle. Originally celebrated as a minor holiday with no obligations to refrain from activities forbidden on the sabbath, Jewish worshippers went to work (although many left early to be home to kindle the lights at nightfall). Religious schools were not closed. Today in America, American Jews commemorate the holiday of Hanukkah as a major holiday replete with traditional foods such as latkes (fried potato pancakes) and jelly-filled donuts, exchanging gifts and playing with dreidels. In New Orleans, Hanukkah means decorating your door with a menorah made of hominy grits. Latkes in Texas are seasoned with cilantro and cayenne pepper. Children in Cincinnati sing Hanukkah songs and eat oranges and ice cream. Like the modern Reform Jewish movement, the rabbis of 19th century America realized that to maintain the identity of Jews, Hanukkah needed to be morphed from “a simple, joyous holiday” celebrating a military battle with the rededication (literally “Hanukkah”) and purification of the Temple, to a major Jewish holiday luring Jewish children and by extension, their mothers, into active Jewish life. In the early 1900s, immigrant Jews reintroduced Hanukkah as a fight against oppression, bolstering the Zionist movement and leading to
the Balfour Declaration which we celebrated its 100-year anniversary on November 9th. During the 20th century, Jewish identity has been preserved in interfaith marriages by co-mingling Christmas and Hanukkah – Chrismukkah cards and Hanukkah bushes, allowing the children of these marriages to continue to self-identify as Jews. The ways in which Hanukkah was reshaped by American Jews reveals the changing goals and values that emerged among different contingents each December as they confronted the reality of living as a religious minority in the United States. We as Reform American Jews are at the crossroads where we want our Judaism to take us next, we only need to look to the celebration of Hanukkah, now almost 2200 years old, and its metamorphosis from a military battle to a festival of joy and inclusiveness. Bringing together clergy and laity, artists and businessmen, teachers, parents, and children, Hanukkah has been a dynamic force for both stability and change in American Jewish life. The holiday’s distinctive transformation from a minor festival to a major occasion that looms large in the American Jewish psyche is a marker of American Jewish life and illustrates how an almost forgotten festival has become the most visible of American Jewish holidays. I believe Congregation B’nai Israel can learn from the lesson of Hanukkah and transform us to become the center of our lives of local Jews, not necessarily being exclusively the center of Jewish life. So, share with me your passions, your visions and help to make Congregation B’nai Israel the major impact in our local community.

There is so much going on with the Brotherhood these days. On Saturday, November 4th, we went to see our hometown Florida Panthers play the New York Rangers at the BB&T Center. Thank you to Peter Davidson for organizing the trip and making sure everyone had a great time. We shared a bus with BISY and enjoyed a very close game. The Rangers ended up winning 5-4 in overtime, and everyone who attended was on the edge of their seats rooting to the very end. On the way back, Peter entertained everyone in his own humorous way and raffled off two signed hockey pucks. On Sunday, November 12th, we had our first Bagel and Bros. This was an opportunity for guys to get together to nosh on bagels, drink coffee and hang out on the second Sunday of every month. Everyone is welcome and hopefully we will see a lot of new faces joining us. We will have some special guests too. If you drop off the kids at Hebrew school on Sunday mornings, please park the car and stop by. If you’re not dropping off kids, still come by. Members of our board will be there to introduce you to others who attend. So, don’t be a stranger come join us!

I strongly encourage you to sign up to volunteer on the CBI website next year. It is a very special day that you won’t want to miss. Keep on the lookout for our annual Chanukah party that we will be having in early December. Like last year, the price of admission will be a gift for a child that we will be donating to JAFCO. We did this last year for the first time, and there were some very happy children who got to celebrate the holiday with some great presents. We are always looking for ways to give back. Linda Harris
Congratulations to Linda! Linda Harris is being promoted to Director of Lifelong Learning at Congregation B’nai Israel. Throughout Linda’s 25 years of leadership as Director of Early Childhood at Nadel Center for Early Childhood Education (NCECE), the school has become the benchmark preschool in the Southeast. Linda led the growth of the Synagogue’s NCECE program from just 180 children to over 500 children that are in the program today. She credits the success of the program to an incredible, hardworking, committed staff, a warm and embracing community and the wonderful parents who consistently place their trust and their children in CBI’s educational programs year after year. As Director of Lifelong Learning, Linda will be expanding her role to bring all education from infancy to adult under the umbrella of one department. She will continue to collaborate with colleague and longtime Director of Religious Education Kim Beame as well as lend her years of expertise to enhance the adult learning and

continuing education programs. She will be instrumental in the search for a new Director of Early Childhood Education and will work closely with that individual to ensure a smooth transition. Linda Harris has been in the field of education for more than 35 years, specifically in early childhood education since 1981. She received her Bachelor of Science in Primary and Elementary Education and a Master’s of Science in Early Childhood Administration. She also has a Florida Advanced Director credential. Harris was the Director of Ramat Shalom, a preschool in south Florida, for 9 years, and has also taught preschool through eighth grade. Harris has served on the Jewish Education Commission, Jewish Education Task Force for South Palm Beach County, was president of the Jewish Council of Early Childhood Directors, past president of ORT and past vice president of the Jewish Council of Early Childhood Educators. Harris is a member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children and the National Association of Temple Educators. She has also been selected for “Who’s Who?” among early childhood administrators. This is an exciting time for all of our educational programs. With Linda Harris now at the helm, we are positioned to grow and serve the community in more ways than we could before.

and VIP Caterers who cooked the best turkey, chicken and veggies Boca has ever tasted. Thanks to

Miss Susan, the Boca Pointe Clowns on Call and the Vanguard High School Brass Band - OMG what
wonderful committee who worked tirelessly for 6 months putting this together so everything ran
a party! Thanks to the marvelous staff at CBI for their time and support. And most of all – Minda
smoothly. Thanks to all the people who donated dollars and turkeys! Thanks to our new Grand
Shaiman - without her Cindy and I couldn't get half the work done that we do! We love you all!
