BEYOND THE BOARDROOM

I hope everyone is having a great summer. Many of our congregants are spending time in the mountains or up north, and lots of kids are at summer camp. At CBI, summer has been just as active as we begin a new congregational year, welcome new clergy, prepare for the High Holidays, and look ahead to an exciting fall

For CBI and nearly all Reform congregations, the new year begins on July 1 That makes this a natural time to plan, prepare, and set the tone for the year ahead

We welcomed Rabbi Erica and Rabbi Cy to our CBI family on July 1 Their energy is off the charts, and their warmth and enthusiasm are evident from the moment you meet them

Planning for the High Holidays has taken center stage, and our Clergy Team is putting the finishing touches on a meaningful and spiritually satisfying worship experience.

We're looking at new and different ways to engage our congregants. What about a country-western singer who provides a Jewish twist with a Western twang? Or a Rosenthal Speaker Series featuring a female entertainer and comedian who has starred in both television and film? We're excited about the possibilities and will share more as plans are finalized.

Our three auxiliaries are planning very busy years. Am Yisrael Chai is off to a great start and has a full calendar of activities planned. Brotherhood kicked off the year with a "Meet Rabbi Cy" event at Tap 42 in July, and Women of CBI will host a "Meet Rabbi Erica" event at Sixty Vines on August 5 as they continue creating opportunities to engage members of all ages. Our PO also has a variety of exciting events planned throughout the year.

When you arrive at CBI for the High Holidays, look for some exciting changes around our building. They're just the beginning of the campus improvements we'll be sharing with everyone in the months ahead.

Taken together, these updates reflect the energy, creativity, and sense of community that will shape the year ahead. I look forward to welcoming everyone as we begin the High Holiday season with Selichot and celebrate the arrival of 5787 together.

RABBI CY STANWAY

Rabbi Cy Stanway will serve as our Senior Interim Rabbi for 2026–2027. He brings a lifetime of service in the congregational rabbinate, having served communities in Hattiesburg, Mississippi; Las Cruces, New Mexico; and Elberon, New Jersey. Most recently, Rabbi Cy served as Interim Rabbi in Gainesville, Florida, from June 2025 through July 2026.

Rabbi Stanway attended York University in Toronto, where he earned a degree in Psychology. He graduated from Hebrew Union College–Jewish Institute of Religion in 1987 and received his Doctor of Divinity in 2012.

In his free time, Rabbi Stanway enjoys playing guitar and drums and is also an amateur radio operator.

Q: What drew you to the rabbinate?

A: When I was in Grade 11, I had an amazing World Religions teacher, Cyril Price. He was so enthusiastic about teaching religions and I had incredible respect for his enthusiasm and knowledge. And, since I was so involved with my synagogue and youth group I had a lot of contact with the rabbis, especially Steven Franklin, z”l and Bobby Kerzner, z”l. I was awed at how much they knew and how they taught and inspired. I wanted to do that and so, from Grade 11, I focused on only that.

Q: What are you most excited about as you join the CBI community?

A: I am excited to work with the children, to sing with them, to teach them and work with them in every way possible. I am also excited to build relationships with every congregant and to inspire in them the joys of being part of this amazing community.

Q: What is your favorite Jewish holiday and why?

A: Sukkot The autumn is a time of change and fresh vision which are the themes of the festival coming as it does at the end of the High Holiday season

Q: What is one Jewish text, teaching, or value that has shaped your life?

A: The Book of Ecclesiastes It is a constant reminder about how short life is, how temporary it is and how each moment ought to be a moment of holiness and connection

Q: What is something people are often surprised to learn about you?

A: That I studied Tae Kwon Do, Shotakan Karate, and Hapkido for 8 years I am also knowledgeable about science, especially quantum mechanics and astronomy.

Q: When you're not at synagogue, how do you like to spend your free time?

A: I like to read and do so extensively. Lately, my daughter has turned me on to audio books so it is a lot easier to hear a book while driving so I don’t read in the car!

Q: What book, podcast, TV show, or hobby are you currently enjoying?

A: I am a ham radio operator and have been for 50 years. In that hobby, I am known to contest frequently (when I am at my station at home) and am a proficient operator of Morse Code. In fact, I am wont to experiment with new modes and aspects of the hobby that I have never tried before

Q: If you could share a Shabbat dinner with any Jewish figure, past or present, who would it be?

A: Just one Jewish figure? LOL!! I would enjoy having dinner with Sigmund Freud, Richard Feynman, Moses Maimonides, and Philo

Q: What is a favorite family tradition that you cherish?

A: There are so many But if I had to choose I suppose it would be our Rosh Hashanna Seder that begins the meal on Erev Rosh Hashanna It’s the perfect way to begin the holidays

Q: What is one thing you're looking forward to experiencing at CBI or in South Florida?

A: I am looking forward to feeling the joy and sense of accomplishment at CBI and having the same happiness and imparting the same joy of Judaism and Jewish thought and practice that has been a part of my service to the Jewish people since I began serving congregations.

Rabbi Erica was born and raised in Rockland County, New York. She attended Binghamton University with a double major in Comparative Literature and Judaic Studies. In 2006, Rabbi Erica received her rabbinic ordination from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York.

Prior to being the rabbi at CBI, Rabbi Erica was the Director of Community Engagement for the NOW for Holocaust Survivors Initiative and campus rabbi at MorseLife Health system in West Palm Beach. She also spent six years working In the planning department at the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County, starting new initiatives like the Jewish Volunteer Center and creating programs to engage all ages of the Palm Beach County community.

Rabbi Erica is passionate about volunteerism and helping create positive change, one person at a time.

RABBI ERICA ROSENKRANZ

Rabbi Erica loves attending music concerts, working out, and taking trips and spending quality time with her family. Her husband, Rabbi Andrew Rosenkranz, is the rabbi at Temple Beth Torah in Wellington. She has two children, Laila who attends UCF in Orlando and Haviv, who is in 8th grade.

Q: What drew you to the rabbinate?

A: My love of Judaism and my desire to connect and engage others to our tradition.

Q: What is your favorite Jewish holiday and why?

A: Hanukkah because I love to share the Hanukkah “lights” with friends and family, and the message of freedom and hope resonates with me each year.

Q: What is one Jewish text, teaching, or value that has shaped your life?

A: Pirkei Avot (Ethics of Our Ancestors) 2:16: “You are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are you free to desist from it ”

Q: What is something people are often surprised to learn about you?

A: I love to exercise and lift weights

Q: When you're not at synagogue, how do you like to spend your free time?

A: I enjoy attending music concerts of various genres You may spot me at a local venue!

Q: What book, podcast, TV show, or hobby are you currently enjoying?

A: I am currently reading the book Theo of Golden.

Q: If you could share a Shabbat dinner with any Jewish figure, past or present, who would it be?

A: I would like to meet Golda Meir, the first female Prime Minister of Israel.

Q: What is one thing you're looking forward to experiencing at CBI or in South Florida?

A: I am looking forward to sharing moments of great joy with the children on the CBI Campus.
