Shalom everyone, You may not know this, but there is a day in June where an entire city takes a break to celebrate itself! People stop their regular activities, put on headbands, grab their flags and celebrate publicly throughout the city. Jerusalem is our capital; Jerusalem is the focal point for our Jewish homeland; and Jerusalem can also simply be a regular city where people live. However, on June 1st this year, we all celebrate Jerusalem Day. Yom Yerushalayim (Jerusalem Day) is an annual Israeli national holiday that commemorates the liberation and reunification of Jerusalem following the Six Day War. Yom Yerushalayim is the latest addition to the Jewish holiday calendar. On June 5, 1967 Israel was attacked by her surrounding neighbors; by June 10, 1967 Israel triumphed over her enemies, capturing the Sinai, Gaza Strip, West Bank, Golan Heights, and all of Jerusalem. We remember the reclaiming of the capital of our Jewish homeland by celebrating Jerusalem on this day. This year Jerusalem Day beings at sundown on June 1, 2019. Below is a famous poem by Yehuda Amichai. The beauty of the poem is in its simplicity, and in the beautiful way he describes both the real city and the real people of Jerusalem. Please take a few minutes to read through the poem and think about the questions that follow: Tourists by Yehuda Amichai
Visits of condolence is all we get from them. They squat at the Holocaust Memorial, They put on grave faces at the Western Wall And they laugh behind heavy curtains In their hotels. They have their pictures taken Together with our famous dead At Rachel's Tomb and Herzl's Tomb And on Ammunition Hill. They weep over our sweet boys And lust after our tough girls And hang up their underwear To dry quickly In cool, blue bathrooms.
Once I sat on the steps by a gate at David's Tower, I placed my two heavy baskets at my side. A group of tourists were standing around their guide, and I became their target marker. "You see that man with the baskets? Just right of his head there's an arch from the Roman period. Just right of his head." "But he's moving, he's moving!" I said to myself: redemption will come only if their guide tells them, "You see that arch from the Roman period? It's not important; but next to it, left and down a bit, there sits a man who's bought fruit and vegetables for his family." • What do you think is the message of the first paragraph of the poem? • What is the significance of using the Roman Arch as the focal point of the scene? •

This poem helps us remember the significance of the people of Jerusalem, as well as the historical landmarks. Lisa, Aviv, Leor and I wish you a happy Yom Yerushalayim where you, too, can celebrate our Jewish capital.

It seems as though the year just started and yet, we are already preparing for next year. The writer Anna Quindlen said “for the young the days go fast and the years go slow; for the old the days go slow and the years go fast”. I don’t know about that as it seems the days go just as fast as the years. So as to make the most of every day and year, I invite each and every one to join us on May 20th at our Membership Annual Meeting. We will be presenting a year end summary of all that Congregation B’nai Israel has to offer and a summary of the past year. Take advantage of meeting the leadership as well as connect with your member friends and hear what is planned for next year. As another year winds down, I wish all of you a safe and happy summer. Whether you are traveling far and exotic or staying close to home, your CBI community is here for you. So here is a travel tip: if you are traveling abroad to a foreign country, contact the World Union of Progressive Judaism (WUPJ) who will
put you in touch with a local congregation, should you need assistance while traveling. Better yet, download the Find a Community app on your smartphone. From Argentina to the Ukraine and from Anniston, Alabama to Laramie, Wyoming, there is a reform synagogue at your fingertips. Connect with your fellow Jew over a Shabbat service or tour a synagogue in Thailand, it is all available to you through the Union of Reform Movement’s community network. Next year is Congregation B’nai Israel’s 36th anniversary – double ig. We are planning some great events to commemorate this great achievement. Come and celebrate with your CBI family and find out how we make life’s Jewish journey more meaningful together. We are once again hosting a Back to Shul event on August 18th. Join us for High Holy Day Services in late September continuing on with Yom Kippur in October through to Sukkot and Simchat Torah.

Well the good news is that at least 5 people read my column all the way to the bottom last issue as they emailed me my code word of Beatles! I am hoping for 10 this time but I won’t mention the word until the bottom so keep reading! (Don’t cheat and look at the bottom!) May and June are especially personally busy for the Allen family as it’s Mother’s Day, 2 birthdays, Father’s Day, and Debbie and my Anniversary. Over the course of each year they are all celebrated differently depending on the people and events in our lives, and where we are located at that time of year. This year will be a very special Mother’s Day as we will be in NY with ALL our 3 kids and 4 grandchildren as we attend a relative’s wedding. My staff and I are already working on next year’s calendar in conjunction with our lay leadership and committees to offer you the best community calendar around. We are constantly improving and listening to what you are interested in regarding services, speakers, programs and special events. CBI is unrivaled in what we offer for our kids from our baby room through 12th grade graduation, and we are excited to

be planning more adult programming for next year under the guidance of our Director of Lifelong Learning, Linda Harris. While Linda will still be overseeing the best Preschool in the country, and our newly accredited Religious School, her additional duties will be concentrating on implementing top programming for adults. We are all very excited about this. There are several changes on board for CBI including new service times (stay tuned), a new Preschool Director to work in partnership with Linda and her staff, a new CBI Inspires top guest speaker, new musical concerts, new member engagement, and collaborative efforts to enrich CBI’s outstanding community. As usual, please feel free to come see me to discuss issues, ideas, complaints, suggestions and compliments as I want to reach out even further to all of you as I complete my 4th year as your Executive Director. My staff is amazing, and I am grateful for each and every one of them. There are many people who make CBI the special place that is today, and everyone is constantly,40, working to make it even better for you, our community.

Join us for a meaningful summer, filled with your peers on the bima!
I personally look forward to our summer B’nai on the Bima program every year. My list of participants to help lead with me and the rest of our clergy on the bima has been growing every year. Our members chant prayers, sing songs, prepare a Dvar Torah or sermon, or even lead the entire service. Some families and Chavurah groups are now a staple every summer. As Fridays always fill up very quickly with participants, my next goal is to create the same excitement for our beautiful Saturday morning Torah study minyan. I often say that this service, every Saturday at 9 am in the chapel, is our “best kept secret” here at CBI. There are many opportunities for honors at this service. We read Torah every week, so we are always in need of ark openers, Torah carriers, and even Torah readers! I would love to invite each and every one of our members to learn an aliyah of Torah with me and chant it one Saturday morning. How nice would it be to honor the anniversary of your Bar or Bat Mitzvah, your wedding anniversary, or a love one’s yahrzeit observance! Please reach out to me at Sarah@cbiboca.org to sign up for an honor or set up a meeting to learn a Torah portion, the Torah blessings, or another part of the morning Shabbat service. Our Saturday morning Torah study service meets year-round and we always need these honors.

Our year is going quickly. Please join us on Sunday, May 5, 2019 for our end of the year luncheon at Mizner Country Club at noon. Registrations is a must for this event. We will be having a fabulous buffet, and our featured speaker will be our own Rabbi Cohen. Thank you to Sue Levine for making the arrangements with Mizner Country Club. That first week in May will be busy for Sisterhood members because we have our annual Mother’s Day Flower Project on Thursday, May 9. We plan to assemble about 400 bouquets of carnations and deliver them to residents of nursing homes, shelters and other facilities for Mother’s Day. We need help with the assembly, which we do in the Sisterhood kitchen at CBI, and we also need people to deliver the completed bouquets to Weinberg House, Gould House, Hospice by the Sea, Arden Courts Memory Care, AVDA, and Menorah House. Hello my brothers. One thing that I love about our Brotherhood, is that we have active members from all demographics at CBI. Pre-School Dads, Single guys, SLJ Dads, Empty Nesters and guys from everywhere else in between. The best part is that everyone is super nice, and that we all get along so well. So, what I am trying to say is, come out and spend some time with us. No matter what stage of life you are in. As they said in the Alka Seltzer commercial many years ago, “Try it, you’ll like it.
spend time with us. Bagels and Bros has turned into a great tradition and the coffee is pretty good too! Howie may even have an official Brotherhood shirt for you too. On March 28th we got together for the second straight year, to watch the NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament for a few hours in the Oneg room. Two movie screens were set up to watch the Sweet Sixteen round of March Madness. We ate pizza, chowed down on snacks and enjoyed a great night of basketball together.
So, what have we been up to lately, and what is in store for the next few months? First off, we continue to do Bagels and Bros on the 2nd Sunday morning of each month. Stop by for a bagel, coffee and a little kibitzing with the Bros after you drop the kids off at Hebrew school, or make a special visit just because you want to
On April 14th we went down to Marlins Park for our annual trip to watch the Marlins play. As usual, we had amazing seats thanks to CBI’s Mr. Baseball, Peter Davidson. Great seats, trivia for prizes for all on the ride down in an airconditioned bus and some good baseball fun made the day perfect for the bros.
Such a great lead into our May event. We will be going to Boca Blackbox for a night of comedy on Thursday, May 16th. A big thanks goes out to Jeffrey Serxner, who is planning a great night of lots of laughs. The headliner is Vicki Barbolak, one of the funniest comedians selling out theaters everywhere! Vicki was a TOP 10 finalist and fan favorite on NBC’s America’s Got Talent. Don’t miss it. So that is all for now. Brothers of all ages, Bagels, Kibitzing, March Madness, Baseball and Comedy. If all this can happen in one day; imagine the impact of participating in Mitzvot and Tikkun Olam through the year… Sunday morning, February 24th, Mitzvah Day 2019 began with a welcome by Jeffrey Cannon, President, Steve All e n, E xe c ut ive Director and a blessing by Rabbi Robert Silvers. A presentation of proclamations by CBI member Commissioner Robert Weinroth was given on behalf of Boca Raton Mayor Scott Singer and The Palm Beach Board of County Commissioners. The sun was shining brightly on hundreds of volunteers with hearts and hands open, eager to give back to our community. Together on campus, we made dozens of blankets for Chemo Angels and neighborhood homeless, 300 bags of toiletries for Jewish War Veterans, 150 Shabbat Bags for Seniors, 550 sandwiches for hungry children in afterschool programs and over 100 tzedakah boxes for Family Promise. The mountain of donations collected prior to Mitzvah Day provided us with countless pairs of shoes to clean for the Rosenzweig Family’s - In 12
Jacob’s Shoes, hundreds of pounds of food, clothing and daily necessities to sort for Jewish Family Services, Boca Helping Hands and The Soup Kitchen on Caridad Campus. As we listened to the Junior Choir sing and Miss Susan DJ throughout the morning, acts of kindness and mitzvot simultaneously spurred off campus. Cantor David Muchnick and the Adult Choir performed and served muffins at Brighton Gardens Senior Living, Rabbi Alli Cohen, the Adult B’nai Mitzvah Class plus additional happy volunteers visited the Federation Campus in Boca to play Bingo with JARC's residents. Executive Director, Steve Allen and dozens of volunteers went gleaning and picked tomatoes for CROS Ministries for insecure communities and assisted with renovations with Rabbi Rony Keller for Habitat for Humanity for residents’ historical homes in Pearl City.

Cantor David Muchnick Joins CBI Congregation B’nai Israel (CBI) announced that Cantor David Muchnick has officially joined CBI’s clergy team as Senior Cantor.

Cantor David Muchnick joined Congregation B’nai Israel as Interim Cantor in August 2018, following 15 years as the Senior Cantor at the Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center, located in Aventura, Florida. While at ATJC, Cantor Muchnick initiated and developed their Friday Night Live Service. He created their temple’s professional choir, sang at numerous concerts and Services, and ran their annual Purim Shpiel. Cantor Muchnick also created and developed their Bar and Bat mitzvah program and spent 12 years running their Religious school. Cantor Muchnick received his Ordination as Cantor from the Hebrew Union College Jewish Institute of Religion. He also has a Masters degree in Jewish Sacred Music from the Hebrew Union College, among many other academic accomplishments. “During my time as Interim Cantor, I was able to spread my passion for Jewish music and teaching to CBI’s vibrant community. I look forward to my role as Senior Cantor and continuing to enhance all musical worship and programming for the synagogue.” Muchnick said. Cantor Muchnick is married to his soulmate Dena. Dena is a Pediatric Speech Language Pathologist. When they are not running around with their five children, Sophie (20), Jonah (18), Alexa (14), Jordan

He represents this community with humility and dignity; his voice and musical skill inspiring us all in worship and in praise of God.” “We are excited to welcome Cantor Muchnick as a permanent member of our clergy team. What has been the most memorable part and personal benefit of being in BISY at CBI? The most memorable part of my experience with CBI has definitely been my confirmation trip to Israel after 10th grade. It truly shaped who I am and motivated me to pursue the goals that I’ve been working hard to achieve ever since. What's the best thing that's happened to you this year? Being elected as the incoming NFTY North American Religious & Cultural Vice President for the 2019-2020 term was easily the best thing that has happened to me within the past year and probably within my entire high school career.
What's the most important thing I should know about you? The two most important things to know about me are that I absolutely love being Jewish and I absolutely love Star Wars. What do you do for fun? I usually play ping-pong with my friends or watch YouTube videos about beards for fun. What are you looking forward to in 2019? I’m looking forward to the Miami Dolphins being an overwhelminglyaverage football team in 2019.
What are you most excited about now that you are going to be Religious and Cultural Vice President of NFTY? I’m most excited about getting to work with URJ executives and the other Reform Jewish leaders around the world. I’m really looking forward to tapping into those resources to make as profound of an impact as possible.

SPRING KALLAH BISY attended NFTY-STR Spring Kallah at Camp Geneva on March 8 -10th! We took 20 BISY teens and had a great time exploring our Jewish values through different Disney movies! Spring Kallah is special because our 8th graders get to join us for their first official NFTY event!

11TH ANNUAL CANTOR STEPHEN DUBOV CONCERT ‘
Congregation B’nai Israel in collaboration with Temple Beth El, will welcomed world renowned Jewish musician Craig Taubman to perform at the 11th Annual Cantor Stephen Dubov Memorial Concert. A musical event for the whole family, the concert was held on Sunday, March 31st at 3 p.m. in Congregation B’nai Israel’s Cohen/Friedkin Sanctuary. The concert featured favorite tracks from Craig Taubman and band, Mostly Kosher, along with Cantor David Muchnick and Associate Cantor Sarah Freudenberger of Congregation B’nai Israel, Cantor Lori Shapiro of Temple Beth El and Music Director Susan Linder of Congregation B’nai Israel. The concert was generously underwritten by Joan and David Dubov in memory of their son, Cantor Stephen Dubov, as well as Cantor Dubov’s sister, Linda Sommers and her late husband, Richard Sommers.

Cemetery Arrangements for CBI Members • Congregation B’nai Israel has a dedicated section at Star of David in North Lauderdale. • Star of David is a modern, clean facility that has easily accessible plots, peaceful water and paved walkways. It also allows upright headstones (while others only allow markers). The North Lauderdale location provides a convenient location for those who may be traveling in from local airports. • Because we have purchased these plots as a group, we are able to offer our members and their families a discounted rate. • Services may be held at CBI or at the Star of David Funeral Chapel.
