Turn the World Around is a song first recorded by singer and activist Harry Belafonte in 1977. The song was later covered by Jewish songleader Dan Nichols, who included the addition of ‘Torah’ to express the roots of the Jewish people. The song teaches us the importance of returning to our roots to better understand who we are. It emphasizes that when we come to better know humanity and ourselves, we can better serve the world. Just a couple of weeks ago, I had the opportunity to travel with our Post Confirmation class to New York City. We took the time to go back to our roots and explore the heritage of our families. The trip took us to the historical sites of Ellis Island and the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, to name a few. There, we were able to see just where many of our ancestors immigrated through, as well as where they rebuilt their new lives in America. My own great, great grandfather of the Edelstein family was a cantor in Hrubieszów, Poland. He passed on his love of music, which continued through my family tree, when his son later immigrated to America. Understanding our Jewish ancestry brings us two main teachings:
One, it reminds us of the struggles that our ancestors faced so that we may learn from them. Deprived of the freedom of religious expression, those who lived in fear and were forced to hide their Judaism, prompt us to ensure that history will never repeat itself. They teach us to honor our Jewish identity by living it out to the fullest of our ability. They teach us to be proud Jews and to never take this right for granted. Two, it reminds us of the ancestral strengths we carry forward today. Our story is one of courage. Those who left their homes in the motherland, with no family to travel to, little money, and no community to join, displayed valor. Our relatives rebuilt new lives, filled with greater opportunity and promise, paving the way for us to have better lives. On one hand, they strived to assimilate into American society, and on the other, they strived to fully embrace their Jewish identity, a challenge for which today, Reform Judaism poses a balance.
When we come to know and recall the history of our family stories—the challenges and the achievements— we form a better appreciation of our Jewish identity. We also come to realize the power of our Jewish values then and the power they still hold for us today. Our principles of kehilla (community), chinuch (education), minhagim v’halachot (Jewish customs and ways of living), tefillah (prayer), menschlekeit (decency towards others), emunah (faith and belief in God), and tikkun olam (improving the world) have all maintained our Jewish peoplehood and continue to do so for us now. Our holiday of Tu b’Shevat (January 21st), which celebrates our trees and the cycle of nature’s growth, especially reminds us of the significance of roots. They ground us and give us strength. We can best honor our roots when we learn from the past and continue to build for the future. May this be our will!
As Belafonte’s song continues: “ Do yo u know w ho I am? D o I know who you are? See, we one another clearly; Do we know who we are?”

As another year concludes and we once again turn our calendar forward, Congregation B’nai Israel is already deeply involved in continuing to bring connections to all of our members. On Rosh Hashanah I outlined what Congregation B’nai Israel is doing to stay relevant in your lives, as the secular new year commences, I ask that you stay relevant in your congregation’s life. Please check our calendar and attend the programs, events and opportunities that we have for you. Once again Congregation B’nai Israel is leading the commitment to take the lead on social issues facing Jewish life today. As a congregation deep rooted in social action and social justice, please mark your calendars for February 24 as we come together for our annual Lori Sklar Mitzvah Day. Like the Mitzvah Days of years past, we will set aside the day to connect the souls of our members with the heart of our local community, and I want to share a story with you that I recently heard: Two friends sat together in a well-known coffee shop in a neighboring town of Venice, Italy, the city of lights and water. As they enjoyed their coffee, a man entered and sat at an empty table beside them. He called the waiter and placed his order saying, “Two cups of coffee, one of them there on the wall.” They heard this order with rather interest and observed that he was served with one cup of coffee but he paid for two and when he left, the waiter put a piece of paper on the wall saying, “A Cup of Coffee”. While still there, two
other men entered and ordered three cups of coffee, two on the table on the table on one on the wall. They had two cups of coffee, but paid for three and left. This time also, the waiter did the same thing; he put a piece of paper on the wall saying, “A Cup of Coffee”. It was something unique and perplexing for these patrons. They finished their coffee, paid the bill and left. After a few days, they had a chance to go to this coffee shop again. While enjoying their coffee, a man poorly dressed entered. As he seated himself, he looked at the wall and said, “One cup of coffee from the wall.” The waiter served coffee to this man with the customary respect and dignity. The man had his coffee and left without paying. These friends were amazed to watch all this, as the waiter took off a piece of paper from the wall and threw it in the trash bin. The great respect for the needy shown by the inhabitants of this town made the friends’ eyes well up in tears. So I ask you to ponder upon the need of what this man wanted. He enters the coffee shop without having to lower his self-esteem; he has no need to ask for a free cup of coffee, without asking or knowing about the one who is giving this cup of coffee to him, he only looked at the wall, placed an order for himself, enjoyed his coffee and left. Like the Venice coffee shop, we at Congregation B’nai Israel, support our local community by offering “Coffee on the Wall”.

You know what is refreshing and so important when you work for a Congregation in any capacity? A simple “thank you, good job, or I really appreciate your effort.” Our calendar is so full and no one understands what it takes to make each event, program or service be seamless and meaningful. Your CBI staff of Clergy and Admin, Preschool, Religious School, maintenance, and security, is incomparable! I have been an Executive Director for 20 years and in my 4 years here at CBI I have seen growth, maturity and consolidation and top performances in every area of our staff community. Of course, there will be some mistakes or oops, I forgot moments, but overall the staff are simply the best. I can point to any event be it large or small and the teamwork that goes on behind the scenes is just amazing. From all of the planning by our clergy for High Holy Days, to our record-breaking Aly Raisman CBI Inspires series event, and all the programs, events and services in between, you should be very proud of everyone who works to make CBI simply the best Congregation around. Looking ahead, we have a variety of events and pro-
grams to inspire you, entertain you, and make you feel even closer as a community. From Naomi Miller’s performance of “Aging, Schmaging” on January 9th where she comes to us from Broadway and a nationwide tour to entertain us and make us laugh, to our Social Action programs highlighted by our incredible Mitzvah Day, to our not to be missed new formatted Purim Shpiel, the winter months are filled with something for everyone. Looking ahead to our major social event on April 6th of “Here Comes the Sun,” it will be more than you can, ”Imagine.” Our services and our team of five clergy have simply raised the bar every time they appear on the Bimah, twice a month at 6:30 PM (first and last Fridays) and at 7:30 PM on the other weeks. If I seem excited and energetic about CBI, I am. There is something for everyone starting with spirituality and never ending. I am proud to be your Executive Director and as a test, just to see if you read my article all the way to the end, I am asking you to email me the name of our new Golden Retriever, Whisky. Let’s see who’s first! As always, I am available to meet with you at anytime about thoughts, ideas, issues, complaints, and even compliments. It is a privilege to be your ED as I hope you feel it is a privilege to be a member of CBI.

This month I would like to focus my article on music technology. I have been working the past few months on how to push Congregation B’nai Israel into the future when it comes to synagogue music. When I first visited this congregation in the final stages of my hiring process, I was impressed with the forward-thinking music choices of our services. In the decade that I’ve been at CBI, the way we consume music has drastically changed. We went from tapes, to CDs, to iPods, to MP3s, to streaming services like Pandora, Apple Music, and Spotify, not to mention the large selection of music on YouTube. Music is now available on every electronic device we own and is synced across multiple platforms. The way we share Jewish music has also changed. In addition to artists selling their music on mainstream marketplaces like iTunes and Amazon, specialty apps like Jewish Rock Radio and PJ Library Radio have been created to bring Jewish music to the masses. Streaming music has changed the entire music industry, and Spotify is leading the way. It's ease of use, vast collection of songs and artists, and competitive price point (starts at free!) makes it the best in its business. For those reasons, we have launched our own Congregation B’nai Israel Spotify profile. I am so excited to share with you our latest innovation. On a Spotify profile you can create and publish curated playlists of any songs in the Spotify catalog. We have found that many of the contemporary Jewish artists creating music today are putting their songs on
Spotify. We have already begun to put Shabbat music lineups into playlists by Shabbat date. After opening a free Spotify account, you can find our profile, listen to our playlists, and you will already know what music to sing along to on Friday night! We are also compiling playlists of our favorite holiday songs, Yiddish songs, and much more. The songs are sung by the original artists, so you can also get to know the composers of your favorite Jewish tunes. Spotify is so easy that you can access it on your phones, tablets, or computers. I will personally offer any member a tutorial if you need help using it for the first time. In addition to Spotify, we are working on a number of other digital initiatives including YouTube videos, updated music pages on our website, and a brand new software for B’nai Mitzvah families. Lastly, in case you are worried that all of our music has gone digital, you will be happy to hear that we need more guitar donations for our teen guitar class, which has been a huge success! We would like as many students to be able to participate, but we need additional guitars donated in order to grow the class. So, if you have a guitar you no longer need, or see one at a garage sale or thrift store, please consider donating it to the synagogue. You can drop them off to my office anytime. I am pleased to report that our Sisterhood membership has increased significantly from last year. Thank you to everyone who joined Sisterhood this year, and thank you to those who helped or participated in recent events. Special thanks to the following people: Annette Baine for donating the speaker’s honorarium for our League of Women Voters’ election program, Susan Silber for sponsoring the Zumba instructor for Zumba with the Rabbi Cohen, and Amy Seidman for purchasing supplies and filling goody bags for the NFTY Hatikvah Kallah. Did you know that Sisterhood supplies goody bags to our youth whenever they travel for Kallahs, retreats, and other events? Thank you to Sue Levine for her ongoing efforts with our Judaica Shop. On January 28, 2019 and February 25, 2019, we will be having Sisterhood Board Meetings at 7:00 p.m. in the Joel S. Nadel Boardroom. These meetings will be

October, November and December continued to be filled with fun and fulfilling events like the Sukkah build, Bourbon n Bros (in our Sukkah), Bagels n Bros, Tap 42 Happy Hour and our Barrel of Monks Chanukah gathering Our camaraderie and friendships continue to grow wherever we get together. We have also increased our commitment to community service as is evident by the amount of great toys that we collected for JAFCO at our Chanukah gathering. Our Brotherhood is about more than just getting together to kibbitz and have fun. We are committed to making a difference by providing reliable manpower to CBIs partnership with Ebenezer Baptist Church for our Feed the Community initiative (FTC). From turkey carvers, to serving dinners, to food preparation and bussing tables our Bros were individually involved with all facets of FTC. For those of you that joined us we thank you, for those of you that missed out please join us next year. This is a massive event that performs Mitzvot on the grandest of scales. Our Bagels n Bros program has also matured as we have begun to incorporate meaningful religious and societal discussions related to our human condition and how the issues of the day impact us and our families as Jews. In November we focused on the tragic shooting in the Pittsburgh, PA Tree of Life Synagogue. We bonded as we shared our genuine concerns and fears related to anti-
semitism, hatred and violence and how it impacts all of us. Our CBI Brotherhood is in a unique position to provide an intimate setting where we can continue getting to know one another in meaningful ways. We are especially proud that we have created an environment where we can all feel free to discuss our genuine concerns and express opinions in a safe space where everyone is accepted and welcome for who they are. This is how the bonds of our CBI Brotherhood keep us connected and relevant to each other as we live our Jewish journeys together. On November 8, 2018, Congregation B’nai Israel painted the town gold when two-time Olympic gold medal gymnast, Aly Raisman, spoke in the Cohen/Friedkin Sanctuary, as part of the CBI Inspires Speakers Series. Raisman, the second most decorated American gymnast of all time, was interviewed on stage by Channel 5, WPTV’s anchor Ashleigh Walters. She spoke candidly to a packed audience of over 850 guests about her upbringing, faith and surviving sexual abuse. Raisman discussed how her Jewish faith has kept her grounded throughout her career and about her decision to perform to “Hava Nagila,” during her floor performance at the 2012 London Games. She also spoke about the power of perseverance, a recurring theme in her New York Times best-selling memoir "Fierce.” It is that perseverance that leaves her continuing to press for change in the gymnastics system that she believes failed her. An advocate of the #MeToo movement, Raisman partnered with the non-profit Darkness to Light to provide critical training and support to prevent child sexual abuse. Guests purchased autographed copies of Raisman’s book. CBI donated all proceeds from those book sales back to Darkness to Light to support this important initiative! The evening concluded with our generous sponsors being treated to an exclusive meet-and-greet and photo opportunity with Aly Raisman during the VIP dessert reception. Raisman is an incredibly accomplished woman who sent a transformative message with our community; “It is important to strive for your goals but not at all costs. Kindness will always be more important than winning gold medals.”

How long have you been at CBI? I've been at CBI since 2016 when we brought our children to NCECE. We originally came for the school but found many good friends among the congregation. Since then, we've made an effort to get more involved, give to the community, and find our home at CBI. What are you looking forward to in 2019? To be honest, there's not one thing in particular. I'm trying not to rush through all of the major milestones that will occur in 2019 like the end of my first school year teaching or the advancement of my children to the next grade level. My wife did promise me that we could go to the Star Wars hotel when it opens at Disney World in 2019, so I've got that to look forward to next year. What do you do for a living? I'm lucky to have two different jobs that I love. First, I teach computer science and robotics to sixth-and eighth-grade students at Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale. I also run my own digital marketing and sales consulting firm, Red Reef Digital, which helps businesses acquire new customers through content marketing, social media, lead nurturing, CRM, and sales enablement systems. This year, I've added teaching as a second career and I absolutely love it. It's a unique opportunity to help young people get engaged and excited about the possibilities that technology can offer them in their careers and in life. What's the most important thing I should know about you? As much as I love technology and what it can do, people are far more important. Specifically, family comes first, followed by ever broader circles of community. I'm constantly asking myself the question, does this make our lives better? If the answer is no, then what can we do differently? While most people who know me recognize that I'm a technophile, they also know that I care about people more.
What is one of your defining moments? Way back in 2002, I met a girl in college that changed my life. I asked her out for a late dinner after working all day on my senior project. We went to a greasy spoon diner and had a delightful conversation filled with laughter. At the end of dinner, I realized I forgot my wallet and she had to pay for our meal. Despite all that, she went on a second date with me, then a third, and a fourth. We've been married for thirteen years now and I wouldn't be the man I am today without her. What do you do for fun? Outside of playing with my kids at the beautiful beaches and parks we have here in Florida, I love to be outdoors boating with friends, flying drones, learning photography, and picking up a new skill. For example, recently, I've been learning as much as I can about 3D printing and engineering design.

How Does Being a Synagogue Member Make My Life Better or Different? I recently read an article written by Rabbi Paul Kipnes. I wanted to share an excerpt discussing the benefits of synagogue membership. “Here’s what joining a synagogue will do. Judaism, synagogue, and community can make you
feel more beautiful because you feel better about yourself when you are spiritually centered. You will feel richer because you will have enriched your life and those of others. You will
feel smarter because you will be able to partake in 5,000 years of Jewish knowledge. You
will be more mentally stable because you will have adjusted the balance of the mind, body,
spirit.
