My mother used to tel l me, “Smi le and the world wi l l smi le back.�
Such an easy thing to do that could brighten one’s day: a simple smile. The concept behind the quote was that my positive action would lead to another and would somehow be returned back to me. The smile was to lead into a ripple effect, a chain reaction, a call and response process. Now imagine, if this smile was instead a candle. Everywhere we go, we have the choice whether to share our candle’s flame—our light—with another.
This year, each one of us has the opportunity to take part in CBI’s Kindle the Light initiative. Each night of Chanukah will be dedicated to a different branch of our congregation, just like the branches of the chanukiah. Together, we will strive to “Kindle the Light� for every CBI auxiliary by reaching our goal of $1,000 for each night. Whether donating to the Nadel Center for Early Childhood Education, The Barry Ira Graff School for Living Judaism, the CBI Sisterhood or Brotherhood, the Kantor Family Center for Justice, Ezrat Am, or the Chesed Fund, each gift will help to strengthen the sacred work we do in our congregation. Just like a contagious smile or a candle that never loses its flame as it sparks a light for others, each donation will be a gift that keeps on giving.
While latkes and jelly donuts fill our stomachs, the art of giving can fill our soul. One of my favorite reminders from Chanukah is that of the shamash “helper� candle that is used to light all of the others. This candle has a holder separate from the others, yet, it is the only one that reaches out to kindle each flame. The shamash makes an effort to draw itself close for the goal of creating more light than just itself. The shamash smiles and the whole chanukia smiles back. During our Festival of Lights, let us take a moment to think about the “helpers� in our own lives. Who is it that has made our lives a little brighter because they are a part of it? Which branch of CBI puts a smile on our face or warms our heart? Kindle the Light is one way we can honor those CBI “helpers� in our lives, whether staff, teachers, or friends. We hope that as we join together to support Kindle the Light, we will also kindle the light of each branch of our congregation—the light that illumines the path for one another and brings warmth to our community. Wishing you and yours a Happy Chanukah!

In the old days, it was not called the Holiday Season; the Christians called it “Christmas� and went to church; the Jews called it “Hanukkah� and went to synagogue; the atheists went to parties and drank. People passing each other on the street would say “Merry Christmas!� or “Happy Hanukkah!� or (to the atheists) “Look out for the wall� ~Dave Barry In December when much of the world looks forward to the Christmas season and all things red, white and green, we as Jews, celebrate the holiday of Hanukkah. However, for over 2000 years Hanukkah was considered a minor holiday not worthy of observation by the priests and rabbis. So how did this insignificant holiday become transfixed into the festival we know it to be today? Like the modern Reform Jewish movement, the rabbis of 19th century America realized that to maintain the identity of Jews, Hanukkah needed to be transformed from “a simple, joyous holiday� celebrating a military battle with the rededication (literally “Hanukkah�) and purification of the Temple, to a major Jewish holiday luring Jewish children and by extension, their mothers, into active Jewish life. In the early 1900s, immigrant Jews reintroduced Hanukkah as a fight against oppression, bolstering the Zionist movement and leading to the Balfour Declaration, which we celebrated its 100-year anniversary on November 9th. During the 20th century and continuing to today, Jewish identity has been preserved in interfaith marriages by co-mingling Christmas and Hanukkah – Chrismukkah cards and Hanukkah bushes, allowing the children of these marriages to continue to self-identify as Jews. The ways in which Hanukkah was reshaped by American Jews reveals the changing goals and values that emerged as Jews everywhere confronted the reality of living as a religious minority in the United States. We as Reform American Jews at the crossroads where we want our Judaism to take us next, only

need to look to the celebration of Hanukkah, now almost 2200 years old, and its metamorphosis from a military battle to a festival of joy and inclusiveness. Hanukkah has been a dynamic force for both stability and change in American Jewish life; its distinctive transformation is a marker of American Jewish life and illustrates how an almost forgotten festival has become the most visible of American Jewish holidays. So, as another year concludes and we prepare to turn our calendar forward, Congregation B’nai Israel is already deeply involved in continuing to bring connections to all our members. On Rosh Hashanah I outlined what Congregation B’nai Israel is doing to stay relevant in your lives, as the secular new year commences, I ask that you stay relevant in your congregation’s life. Please check our calendar and attend the programs, events and opportunities that we have for you. Once again Congregation B’nai Israel is leading the commitment on social issues facing Jewish life today. As a congregation deep rooted in social action and social justice, please mark your calendars for February 23 as we come together for our annual Lori Sklar Mitzvah Day. Like the Mitzvah Days of years past, we will set aside the day to connect the souls of our members with the heart of our local community. I wish all of you a very happy Hanukkah, Hanukkah Sameach.

As this article is timed to be read near the end of the secular New Year, and right around Chanukah, Debbie and I always take this time to surround ourselves with as much family as possible and take a deep breath. When you get a bit older and your family grows, it is the miracle of life itself. When we think back just 5 years ago, we had 3 kids, 1 married and that was all (plenty!). Now, we still have the 3 kids, 2 married, FOUR grandchildren all in NY, and our beautiful and talented daughter, Rachel, working in South Florida. This Chanukah season we will hopefully have all of our family down here as we celebrate and babysit a lot for our grandkids, so our kids can go out and see the sights. It is a very difficult assignment but one that we feel up to the challenge and accept readily! It is truly the season of lights as our candles are lit and the entire house is full of 32 toys (4 kids x 8 nights) this year, plus all the toys they have left here over the years. As I celebrate my fifth year here as your Executive Director, it is also a time to reflect on where we have come in my time here and hope that I have made some difference in the CBI community. CBI continues to be the Congregation with a Conscience. Our Kantor Family Center for Justice continues to thrive and expand our involvement into the Jewish Community, which is something that makes me very proud. Our clergy team was incredible at the High Holy Days and our programming including the Sanctuary sellout of guest speaker, Mitch Albom, from our Speaker Series raised much needed funds, and everyone who attended walked away mesmerized from the presentation of this talented Jewish author and his miraculous, heartwarming and heartbreaking new best seller, “Finding Chika.� As the calendar turns to 2020, CBI is continuing its warm and welcoming atmosphere with our engaging services, our Mitzvah Day on Feb.23, and the Installation/Concert weekend with our fabulous Cantor David Muchnick, and his friends who will take us from Bimah to Broadway on January 31/ February 1. These are just a few highlights but please check our website and pay attention to our eblasts, they really are meaningful. So, please enjoy your Chanukah season, your Whisky, your family, and the many offerings CBI has for all of you. As usual I am always available to meet with you regarding suggestions, ideas, complaints, coffee and sometimes compliments. The Allen’s wish you a happy and healthy Secular New Year.

How to Celebrate Chanu kah without Presents

Now that our Synagogue year is in full swing, the Membership Committee continues to work to plan activities and programs to welcome new members and to engage all members in our CBI Family. We held our fabulous Welcome Back to Shul in August to kick off the new season and a Cocktails & Conversation evening to welcome new members and honor our Chai members in September.
Membership
Since everyone seems to like cocktails and conversation, we will plan more of this type of social event. We are also planning a breakfast get-together for people who have special interests and would like to be part of a group with likeminded members, such as movies, crafts, study, creative writing, photography, chavurim, etc. Even more importantly, in order to truly live our DNA and be warm and welcoming from the first Shalom, we would like to hand deliver gifts to our members, have representatives at all services and events as CBI Ambassadors, and begin a Buddy program to connect each new member family with an established member. In order to achieve all of our goals we need to expand our committee and would welcome all members to join us. We have a wonderful group on the membership committee who participate in a few friendly, lively and inclusive meetings each year (which can include good snacks and drinks) and would love to have more people from every arm of CBI join us. CBI SISTERHOOD WOMEN OF REFORM JUDAISM Chag Chanukah Sameach! Come share your light with Women of Reform Judaism/Sisterhood on Monday, December 16, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. We are hosting Menorahs & Mimosas on the third floor in the Joel S. Nadel Board Room. Celebrate the miracle of Chanukah with us, bring your Menorahs to light and be prepared to party. If you would like to attend, please R.S.V.P online so we can plan for seating and refreshments. Also, for all your Chanukah shopping needs, please remember to stop by our Judaica Shop. We have a large selection of Chanukah merchandise so whether you need that special gift, a singing stuffed animal for a child or grandchild, a hostess present, or just a box of candles, please patronize our shop. In the last few months, our members spent a musical evening with Cantor Muchnick, raised approximately $5,300 for the fight against breast cancer, attended a Pink Party with members of the Mommy Minyan, and again with the Mommy Minyan, participated in the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk on the FAU campus. We are planning our activities for the remainder of this season including our Passover Women’s Seder, a fashion show sponsored by Chico’s, and our annual Mother’s Day Flower Project. Also, mark your calendars for Friday night, February 28, 2020 when members of Sisterhood will be leading the service. I wish everyone a Chanukah filled with light and happiness. To start, I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday! On Sunday, October 13th, we had our annual Brotherhood Sukkah Build. Over thirty guys came out, including Rabbi Silvers, Rabbi Keller and Steve Allen to build CBI’s sukkah. We spent time with old friends, made new friends and enjoyed bagels and coffee together. Special thanks to Howie Newmark, who did an amazing job planning the day as he does every year. To follow-up this great event we had our third annual Bourbon and Bros event on Thursday, October 17th. Again, we had an amazing turnout as we tasted bourbons and ate delicious food from VIP. What many people do not know, is that we honored two very special people when we built the Sukkah. Jason Beame, who loved building the sukkah and exemplified what being a brother was all about, and Arthur Bowe, who was the original architect and builder of CBI’s Sukkah. Jason and Arthur represent the spirit of celebrating sukkot together and the true meaning of building the sukkah and the bonds that tie our Brotherhood together for the past, present and the future. Our Monday Night Football watch party on the big screen on November 18th was a great success! We socialized, networked and snacked on great food and drinks together while enjoying the game. On November 26th, we had a nice group of brothers participating in Feed the Community and it was once again one of CBI’s biggest social action events of the year! Finally, on December 8th, we will be going to see our hometown Florida Panthers play the San Jose Sharks at the BB&T Arena. You will be able to buy tickets on the CBI website soon, so stay tuned. That’s all for now. As you can see, the Brothers are very busy and having tons of meaningful fun together. Hope you can come and join us sometime soon. AN INCREDIBLE EVENING WITH MITCH ALBOM There was not a dry eye in the house on Thursday, November 14th as CBI hosted a special evening with acclaimed author, philanthropist, columnist, and sports reporter, Mitch Albom. Albom, who is best known for his best-selling book Tuesdays with Morrie, spoke to a sold-out sanctuary as he got personal about his Jewish roots, professional ups and downs and his latest heartbreaking memoir,
Finding Chika: A Little Girl, an Earthquake, and the Making of a Family.
Mitch Albom began the evening discussing his funny childhood memories at Jewish day school and how he never intended to become a best-selling author but how his heart was set on being a musician. It was actually tiny twists of fate that had decided so much of his life. Albom focused the majority of his talk on sharing the heartwarming story of Chika, an orphaned Haitian girl who forever changed his heart and transformed his family before passing away from an inoperable brain tumor in 2017. He displayed videos and photos of Chika that were moving and inspirational, drawing both laughter and tears from crowd. “There could not have been a better representation of CBI’s DNA message of warm and welcoming and the Congregation with a Conscience then Mitch Albom’s heartwarming and heartbreaking presentation as our CBI Inspires guest speaker, says CBI Executive Director Steve Allen. Mitch represents all that can be good in this world and it was an honor and a privilege to host him at CBI.” Following Albom’s time with the audience, guests lined the halls to purchase their copies of Finding Chika, which a portion of the book sales went back to Have Faith Haiti Mission & Orphanage in Port-au-Prince. CBI also hosted an exclusive meet-and-greet dessert reception for CBI Inspires Series sponsors, where they mingled with Mitch and enjoyed candid conversation.

My husband, James, myself, and ou r two sons, Jackson (al most 4) and Dy lan (2), feel a strong connection to the B’nai Israel family at both the preschool and congregation levels. Raisi ng ou r chi ldren with a Jewish u pbri ngi ng was a decision that we made early on. The terms “tzedakah” and “mitzvah” may be rather new to Ji mmy, but, givi ng back, doi ng good deeds, and bei ng a part of somethi ng bigger, are just some of the values we both share. This year, I was asked to be a part of the Parent Organization at CBI. This has allowed me to become more i nvolved with the preschool. I’ve been given the opportu nity to do more for and give back

Traditionally, Chanukah is a time of gift giving and decorations to celebrate a festive time of year. In order to help children, understand that the meaning of Chanukah is more than receiving a new toy or game, here are some suggested activities for you to do with your children: Day One: Remember the Meaning of Miracles Light the first candle, say the prayers and read about the story of Chanukah. Take some time to explore what a miracle is, both big and small and how it might show up. It could be a rainbow, a beautiful sunset or a butterfly that came out of its cocoon. Day Two: Appreciate Art There are art projects that you and your children could explore with just scissors, colored paper, and glue! Turn dreidels into art pieces with felt, ribbons and paint, or decorate candles with beeswax. Spend the evening together, having fun and creating handmade pieces to decorate your home in the coming days of Chanukah. Day Three: Tzedakah Night Spend time as a family discussing the meaning of Tzedakah (charity), and why we value giving to those in need. You can have the children wrap a few toys to bring to kids in need, or identify another charity, or a family, or individual who needs help. Together, as a family, you can come up with a plan to decide what act or acts of charity can be done. Day Four: A Night of Cooking Prepare traditional foods together for an extra special festive meal! Make sure to involve your kids in the preparation and talk to them about the meaning of the foods. Share your creations with friends and loved ones. Day Five: Music Night Sing Chanukah songs, listen to your favorite Chanukah music, or find a Chanukah playlist on Amazon Alexa (there are several). We also suggest songs by our very own Miss Susan. Make this night about music. Day Six: Story Night Ask your older family members to attend this special evening of sharing. Each member of the family can bring a book about Chanukah. Ask the eldest family members what it was like growing up Jewish in his or her generation and what they did for Chanukah as children. What has changed and what has stayed the same? Day Seven: Peace in the Home, Shalom Bayit Discuss the value of having a peaceful home and getting along with family members, especially their brothers and sisters. Take a walk after dinner to look at holiday lights. Day Eight: Mitzvot Night Point out the kind deeds that they have seen by family members over the past eight days in order to reinforce a sense of giving simply for the happiness of giving. Reflect on the wonders that showed up and how your family might continue to remember them all year long. By introducing these fundamental values and concepts during Chanukah, you are truly reinforcing and celebrating the “festival of lights”. These values can be reinforced and practiced throughout the year to help build relationships, friendships and family. Enjoy the Festival of Lights with your family!

We started a new youth group this year called Chaverim for our K-2nd graders! Our first event was a Fall Festival full of candy apple making, apple scavenger hunt around the temple and a giant corn maze in the front lawn! We had over 60 children join us for this amazing event! It was tons of fun and they even received a youth group t-shirt!
We were excited to have our first event of the year, glow in the dark mini golf! We had a great time playing mini golf in the Zimmerman Family North Social Hall, doing some relay races outside and enjoying snow cones.!
We started this year off with Club 678 going on a limo scavenger hunt around Boca! We made stops at the Town Center Mall, Patch Reef Park, the beach and Phenomenom for ice cream! Everyone had a great time and we’re looking forward to future events!

THE BARRY IRA GRAFF SCHOOL FOR LIVING JUDAISM The SLJ 8th-10th Grade Fall Retreat/Kallah was the weekend of October 11-13 at the Marriott Pompano Beach. Twenty-five teenagers spent Shabbat and the weekend together, learning, bonding and playing. The theme of the weekend was Teen Well-Being. Students learned how to take care of themselves and their peers through activities and discussions and learned the Jewish values associated with mental health. The retreat was made possible in part through the Kamsly Grant from The Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County and Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation. One teen told us, “I learned to love myself as I love my neighbor and love my neighbor as I love myself.” Another told us that he learned, “If I am not for myself, who will be for me?” Another told us, “Wow, I really need this weekend of learning. Thank you.”

Cemetery Arrangements for CBI Members • Congregation B’nai Israel has a dedicated section at Star of David in North Lauderdale. • Star of David is a modern, clean facility that has easily accessible plots, peaceful water and paved walkways. It also allows upright headstones (while others only allow markers). The North Lauderdale location provides a convenient location for those who may be traveling in from local airports. • Because we have purchased these plots as a group, we are able to offer our members and their families a discounted rate. • Services may be held at CBI or at the Star of David Funeral Chapel.
