As the High Holy Days approach, we instinctively look at them through a religious lens. These Yamim Noraim - Days of Awe, are after all, the beginning of our Jewish year, and considered to be perhaps the holiest time of year for the Jewish people. This is the time when we are supposed to do the hard work of inward examination (Cheshbon HaNefesh) and reflection on our behavior. Yes, it is a spiritual and most definitely a religious labor of extreme import, value and worth. But because it is a religious task, or if you will, obligation that we all have as Jews, it is also quite challenging as most of us in our Jewish community lack the religious foundation and knowledge to help us fully understand and appreciate this holy task. So perhaps I can help you better understand this by relating it through a business metaphor, and in business jargon… During the High Holy Days, we get meaningful “face-time” with the World’s Wealthiest Investor, and He Himself wants to make sure that we don’t blow the pitch. Even though He has given us opportunities to meet with Him all throughout the year, He now offers us 10 focused days of “power-meetings,” inviting us to not only present Him with our strategic plan, but to also solicit Him to stand behind it (these are known as the Aseret Y’mai Teshuvah – The Ten Days of Repentance. They begin with Rosh Hashanah and culminate on Yom Kippur). The great news is that God – the ultimate Investor – already believes in us and is tremendously eager to invest in our projects. Amazingly, He even takes it upon Himself to steer us away from pursuing the wrong proposals (What a tremendous kindness this is!) The very same Investor that we are coming to with our strategic plan is focused on making sure that we don’t blow the pitch to Him. So, how does He go about this? Since He realizes that we may not have researched His investment priorities so carefully, He begins our tenday meetings with an interactive, two-day orientation
symposium: allowing us to discover more about this Investor’s “background;” to explore what types of ventures He values and supports; and more. During these two days – known as Rosh Hashanah – He watches us to get a sense of our sincerity and integrity: Are we awake during the seminar? Are we alertly paying attention to the content? Do we seem to be getting the big picture? Are we internalizing its message? In short: are we viable candidates worth His investment? Once we understand where this magnanimous Investor is coming from, He grants us eight more days to revise our proposal. He urges us to spend at least a little extra time going through His brochures and “corporate literature” – available in the form of Prayer Books (Machzorim) and Torah texts – to maximize our chances of creating revisions that will attract His support. And He even lets us practice our pitch on Him – as many times as we need to get it right! Over these ten days, we all have a golden opportunity: to spend quality time with the Investor that can truly supply the resources we need to make great things happen in this world. He only wants to know what we will do with those resources. What will we do with the health; the strength; the wisdom; the benefits? If we really tap into what’s going on during the first two days – during the awesome orientation opportunity available on Rosh Hashanah, we can clearly understand how the Investor would want us to use these blessings. May we all merit perceiving this golden opportunity, and may we be worthy recipients of God’s abundant investments in the year to come! My family (Ava, Jason, and Jenna) join me in wishing you all a Shanah Tovah u’metukah – a good and sweet New Year!

Kennedy~ As I reflect back over the past year, it is hard to believe it was only one year ago when I wrote my first message as President of Congregation B’nai Israel. As I stated then, your leadership, staff, and clergy had been working hard to make this past year a meaningful one for each of you, where connections will be made, kept, built upon and improved. I hope as we reflect on the past year, you agree that with the addition of our two new rabbis, Rabbi Keller and Rabbi Cohen, Congregation B’nai Israel is well along on the path to being your welcoming and warm home. Our commitment to provide superior programming, whether it is religious, social or educational for which CBI is known for, will continue again this year. I am excited to see all of you at our member’s Welcome Back to Shul Bash just weeks before the High Holy Days and our CBI Talks series with our incredible guest, Olympic champion Aly Raisman (an amazing follow up to Chuck Todd last year) later this year. I hope you take advantage of the incredible programming and realize that CBI has something for everyone. Our Brotherhood, Sisterhood, Parent Organizations and Connecting CBI groups offer members the opportunity to connect with each other, while our CBI Talks, film series and adult education allow members the opportunity to educate themselves. Come to our Friday night services, Saturday morning Torah study or other avenues to expand your Jewish heritage with our clergy. Should you have an idea for a program we don’t have or one which you would like expanded, please reach out to me at President@cbiboca.org Unfortunately, last year was not unique with change. As you all know by now, our beloved Cantor Shore, decided after more than 27 years with CBI, to retire and pursue her next life’s chapter. I know I speak for many members who grew up, literally, spiritually or emotionally, with Cantor Shore providing the warmth and soul with her music and personal outreach. As we adapt to the changes that life has for us, we too must adapt to this change with a mindset that we cannot replace someone who for years has made CBI our spiritual home.
Rather, your leadership – clergy, professional and lay leaders – are committed to bringing in a new outstanding cantor, who brings the same qualities we love and will deepen connections with each of us. As in life, we hold fond memories of what we had before; we must look forward and embrace change without diminishing the importance and impact they had on our lives. I shared with you in a prior message, our goal for this year is to continue to deepen connections and for CBI to make your life’s Jewish Journey more meaningful together through approachable relevant Judaism in an inviting, supporting and inspirational home. Let’s keep this thought in mind as we once again prepare for the High Holy Days, and look ahead to the new year where harmony and unity prevail and meaningful connections are made. I again urge each and every one of us to connect, in whatever way we feel is meaningful, through involvement in Congregation B’nai Israel – Connecting By Involvement. I wish all my fellow congregants, staff and clergy a very healthy, happy, and prosperous 5779.

What a year it was. As I write this article, I am thinking back to the year that is about to end and all the things and events that have happened personally and professionally. As my job is one which things happen not just daily or hourly but by the minute sometimes, it was a good year yet filled with moments of anxiety and disbelief. Getting to know many more congregants, improving my staff immeasurably, watching the camaraderie of our clergy get closer now than it’s been in the 3 years I am here, watching and helping the bond between the leadership and the staff tighten, spending months on creating a new DNA for the Congregation (thank you Samantha Avivi!), bringing in Chuck Todd as our CBI Inspires main speaker, experiencing the tragedy of Parkland where I worked for 3 years before coming to CBI, traveling to NY to see my 3 grandchildren and knowing that number 4 is due in September, increasing the congregation’s visibility in the Jewish community through major outreach and social action projects, and really understanding what it means to run a synagogue. These are just a few of the memories that come to mind as I write this article
This coming year I will celebrate my 20th year as an Executive Director in the non-profit world. As I start my 4th year here as your Executive Director, we will welcome the incredible and dynamic, Aly Raisman on November 8, as our featured CBI Inspires speaker, continue to help grow our pre-school and religious school, make needed aesthetic and necessary repairs and changes to our campus, celebrate our 35th anniversary of existence at 2200 Yamato Road, continue to appreciate all the people I work with here at CBI and realize that each and every one of them contributes to the success and the sense of community we have built and will continue to build, work closely with your lay leadership under the President of CBI, Jeff Cannon, get back to playing tennis as I recover from the March car accident, and finally have the ability and honor to wish all of you from Debbie and me a very happy and healthy new year, and let it be a year of peace, good health and strong family ties. As always, I look forward to meeting with anyone who would like to come see me about anything. L’Shanah Tovah

As we head into a new season at Congregation B’nai Israel, I would like to report on the state of the music at our synagogue. For many people, myself included, music is the way through which we connect to our spirituality, our Jewish heritage, and to fellow Jews. Music has always been an integral part of all our lives both inside and outside of worship. In the Art of Public Prayer, Rabbi Hoffman spends an entire chapter talking about what makes music sacred, and what the real task of music in prayer is; that is, WHY is music important in a service? In this explanation, he speaks of the community created in any given worship service. There is horizonal, people connecting to each other while praying together, and there is vertical, our prayers being lifted as a common goal of worshipping, to God. This is the two-fold assignment when we gather together in public prayer.

We know that prayer sometimes takes a backseat for some of us to these other activities or needs. However, we assert that we have surprisingly engaging services. We believe Judaism, and prayer, is relevant. We invite you to find that out firsthand at every service…. Which brings me back to the state of music at Congregation B’nai Israel. I believe now more than ever we need prayerful inspirational music in our lives as modern day Jews in America. We need Shabbat in our lives to quiet the noise and tumult the world provides daily without fail. It is my promise to provide inspiring, uplifting, and peaceful Shabbat music at every Shabbat service that enables us to pray. I will do this not alone but with participation from our adult choir, junior choir, band, teens, and other musicians, in conjunction with careful planning with our committed and supportive rabbis. I will provide opportunities for YOU, all of you, to be able to participate by singing our prayers and beautiful songs together as a community.

Rosh Hashanah ONLY 4:00 PM Tashlich Tashlich originated during the Middle Ages and was inspired by a verse uttered by the prophet Micah: ‘God will take us back in love; God will cover up our iniquities, You [God] will hurl all our sins into the depths of the sea.’ (Micah 7:19). As the custom evolved it became tradition to go to a body of water and symbolically cast our sins (by tossing pieces of bread) into the water on the first day of Rosh Hashanah.
Yom Kippur ONLY 2:45 PM Fast Talk This informal learning is for those wishing to remain in the synagogue all day. The topic will be "Jewish Perspective of the After Life" and be led by our member, Bob Dobrin. 5:30 PM Yizkor, Neilah We will conclude Yom Kippur with our traditional Yizkor & Neilah - the closing service. Adults and children are invited to bring and sound their shofar, to mark the end of the High Holy Days. Services on the Web

This summer, I had the distinct pleasure of being on faculty at the Union for Reform Judaism’s (URJ) Camp Coleman in Cleveland, GA. As you may know, the URJ operates as the overarching umbrella for the movement, connecting with all the Reform synagogues. The URJ also owns and operates 17 different Jewish summer camps throughout the United States and Canada. Sixteen of those camps are residential sleep-away camps. While each camp is special and has its own unique qualities, some things that all of the camps have in common are: fun, safety, camaraderie, and the development the Jewish identities of young people. Camp Coleman was founded in 1964 and has been the premier center for Jewish camping in the southeast ever since. The week that I spent on faculty was extremely rewarding and lots of fun. During one session there are approximately 600 people at camp, including the kids, staff, and faculty. It is a welloiled machine creating smiles, lasting memories, and precious Jewish moments summer after summer. Everyone you encounter is kind, happy, and focused on the same goal of creating a meaningful experience for everyone. In fact, my older son attended Camp Coleman for the first time this past summer and had a wonderful time.
the middle of camp. The cheers from each unit are thunderous, the Jewish programming is engaging and interesting…and the circus arts activities are incredible as kids juggle and walk on tight-ropes. Camp is divided into 7 different units arranged by age group starting with campers entering the 3rd grade and up through counselors in training (CITs) in 12th grade. I was lucky enough to be paired with the 9th grade Kesher (Hebrew for connection) unit throughout my time at Coleman. The staff and campers were welcoming and immediately made me feel like part of the community. Perhaps one of the coolest things about Camp Coleman is the beautiful man-made lake at the center of the camp. Each day is either a “pool day” or a “lake day” for the campers. The pool is sparkly blue with a waterslide, and the lake (as pictured below) has a beach, diving areas, and in the center is the ‘blob’. The blob is the air-filled floating
The food is delicious, the Chadar Ochel (dining hall) is bubbling with excited energetic children, and the cabins are all nestled amongst the trees that surround the lake in
launching pad in the center of the lake. One camper sits on the end closest to the lake and one jumps off the top of the wood stand and onto the blob which launches the other person up into the sky and then splashing into the lake…it's awesome to watch! The statistics of Jewish camping don’t lie. The proof is in the numbers. According to studies conducted by Jewish sociologists and by the Foundation for Jewish Camp show that kids who attend Jewish residential summer camps are 89% more likely to connect to Jewish holidays, visit Israel, and belong to synagogues. Those who attend Jewish summer camps are more readily equipped to engage in programs and activities that continually develop their Jewish identity. Plus, children who attend overnight camp more easily adjust to college, since they have already experienced the independence of living away from home. Here is the best news of all! What could be more powerful than watching a group of young Jewish adults fall in love with their homeland just as I had done?
I have been to Israel many times, even living there twice, but this past summer has allowed me to see Israel through new eyes. This summer has allowed me to see Israel through the eyes of twenty-three amazing young adults, who were seeing Israel for the very first time.
What could be more powerful than seeing them connect with their spirituality, as they placed letters and poured their hearts out into the Western Wall?
My relationship with Israel has been a formative aspect of my own Jewish identity. Israel is where Hebrew transformed foreign Shabbat sounds and songs into prayers and hopes. Israel is where the Torah came alive, realizing that this place was not a fictional, far-off land but a place with rich Jewish history that brought the biblical stories to life. Israel is where I learned what it means to be part of a peoplehood—part of something larger than myself, part of a chain of tradition passed on from generation to generation, l’dor v’dor. Israel is where my Judaism left the pages of the prayerbook and became part of my being: bringing me closer to God, connecting me to a land of history and rooting me within the Jewish people. I have always known the significance of this place, but I did not know that sharing Israel with others would be even more significant.
What could be more powerful than watching them take part in mitzvot, as they prepared food baskets for those in need volunteering through Pitchon Lev (Open Heart) and entertained children receiving medical treatment at Save a Child’s Heart? What could be more powerful than seeing them understand the importance of a Jewish homeland after visiting Yad Vashem - The World Holocaust Remembrance Center? What could be more powerful than watching their amazement as the whole country paused to celebrate Shabbat with them and Jews of all denominations wished them a “Shabbat Shalom,” as they walked through the cobblestone streets of Jerusalem? What could be more powerful than hearing that they long to return to Israel and that this trip has strengthened their Jewish identity? I am so proud of the CBI Confirmation Class of 5778 and honored to have been part of your first pilgrimage to your Jewish homeland! “Mazal tov” for taking this step on your Jewish journey.

Shanah Tovah U’metukah - a good and sweet new the Florida Constitution, and many of those proposals year! To make your new year especially sweet, Sisterhood’s opening event this year will be a dessert party on Monday evening, October 15, 2018 at 7:00 pm in the third floor Boardroom. This event will be free to all CBI members who have paid their Sisterhood dues this year. That evening, we will be hosting a surprise guest speaker with a marvelous sense of humor. If you want to attend this event, please pay your Sisterhood dues and consider joining at one of the higher levels. Your dues help to support Sisterhood projects at CBI as well as Women of Reform Judaism in North America. Sisterhood members are also entitled to discounts in our Judaica Shop.
On October 29, 2018, Sisterhood will be sponsoring a special program, which will be open to all CBI members, at 7:00 pm in the chapel. The League of Women Voters will provide a non-partisan presentation on the 2018 November Election ballot proposals. Florida ballots will contain, at least, 13 proposed amendments to

can be confusing to the average voter. We are so fortunate to be able to host this program shortly before the November 6 election. This presentation is geared to allow voters to understand what they are voting for or against. Discussion will be encouraged. The presentation will be followed by coffee and dessert. Also in the fall, Sisterhood members will be participating in the annual Rosh Hashanah Food Bag Project (September 6) and the annual Making Strides for Breast Cancer Walk (October 14). Sisterhood members should, also, mark their calendars for November 15 when we are planning a Zumba evening. The New Year (5779) is almost upon us. It will be filled with the most amazing opportunities to join us and enjoy everything that our Brotherhood has to offer. We spring into action on Sunday, September 23rd from 9:00 am -11:00 am for our annual Sukkah build. Building our Sukkah is a great opportunity to continue celebrating the New Year and to meet 'n greet many of our Brotherhood members outside in the upper courtyard. We will continue the celebration on Wednesday evening, September 26th as we enjoy Bourbon 'n Bros in our Sukkah. Bourbon 'n Bros is another great way to socialize and get to know even more of our Brotherhood Bros. The evening is sponsored by JNF (Jewish National Fund) as we taste test a wide variety of Bourbons and enjoy delicious food prepared by VIP Caterers. On September 6th, we will kick off with our annual Monday Night Football Party at Duffy's (more details to follow). October is also when we resume Bagels 'n Bros on Sunday mornings near the SLJ carpool lane (more details to follow). Due to the success of Bagels 'n Bros we are expanding it beyond the enjoyment of schmoozing over a bagel and a schmeer. This year we will be socializing and helping our community through social action

Our Brotherhood has enjoyed tremendous growth and participation from a multitude of guys. I am writing to provide an update on the Kantor Family Center for Justice. I have been working with the CBI Clergy and staff on new activities for our members. I am excited to share that CBI has registered with the Religious Action Center, the social justice/social action arm of the Union of Reform Judaism to be a Brit Olam Congregation to join in the Reform movements vision for social justice.
Our first initiative: to work towards all CBI members registering and pledging to vote. As Americans we know that nothing changes until we act. As Jews we know that where there is room to act, there is reason for hope. Our action, our hope, begins with our votes. Pledge cards will be displayed throughout CBI. Please take a moment to complete and pledge to vote. A second initiative: will be collecting donations on a monthly basis for local charities. For local charities. The following is a monthly list of items we will be collecting over the coming year, by month. The blue bins placed by the school offices will be used to collect these items. School for Living Judaism
Alec Schwartz BISY President I have grown up at CBI, going to Religious School every Sunday to learn more about my religion and my culture. I would always hear about this place called Israel. I always knew it was our Jewish Homeland and was the holiest place in the world. However, I didn’t really have an established connection… until now. The three weeks that I spent with my Confirmation Class in Israel were truly the most meaningful and amazing weeks of my entire life. It is difficult to put into words just how powerful this trip was. One moment from the trip that I will hold with me forever is the Western Wall in the Old City of Jerusalem. Just like in Religious School on Sunday, I would always hear about it and I knew what it was, but I was never able to really connect with it. When I walked up to The Wall, I instantly broke into tears and finally understood the significance of the Western Wall and Israel. Not only was I able to experience this adventure in Israel with my Confirmation Class, but I met new friends from all over the country-Chicago, Atlanta, Con-
necticut, Ohio, and California. We began the trip not knowing anything about each other and ended the trip being more connected to each other than some of our friends at home. Between the family that we created in our group and the incredible places we visited along the way, I can easily say that this adventure in Israel will always be the most memorable and important experience of my life. I no longer see Israel as some place like I did as a kid, but because of this trip, I truly see it as my home and I know I will be back some day. I am so grateful to Kim Beame, Rabbi Alli Cohen (“Rabbs”), David Linder, and the rest of the staff, and I would like to thank CBI and the SLJ for giving me the opportunity to have the most amazing time of my life, which I will never forget. Because of this amazing journey my friends and I embarked on, I now have an unbreakable bond with my homeland, Israel, and I will hold onto it and cherish it forever. I don’t know exactly when, but I do know that I will be back one day.

Cemetery Arrangements for CBI Members • Congregation B’nai Israel has a dedicated section at Star of David in North Lauderdale. • Star of David is a modern, clean facility that has easily accessible plots, peaceful water and paved walkways. It also allows upright headstones (while others only allow markers). The North Lauderdale location provides a convenient location for those who may be traveling in from local airports. • Because we have purchased these plots as a group, we are able to offer our members and their families a discounted rate. • Services may be held at CBI or at the Star of David Funeral Chapel. *As of the date of printing, CBI has a small number of unsold plots.
