More Than an Award: My Khim Competition Journey
Participating in the competition was an invaluable experience for me, not only because of the scores and awards, but rather the journeys, memories, experiences that made it special to me.
First of all, I am very glad to play Khim, as it is not just a regular instrument but an instrument carved deeply into Thai history, and every sound that is produced is a reminder that we should preserve culture. Last year, I participated in the 44th Khim contest (middle region), primary division. I dedicated myself for about 4 months into auditioning, refining, and of course, to something that is sometimes boring but exponentially important: Practicing. I can still recall that Kru A dragged me to practice every morning, every breaktime, every free lunchtime or even after school. Even though I was a very irresponsible, naughty monkey (obviously), she slowly grinded me to discipline.
On the competition day, I was all bubbles. Excited, but nervous. Determined, but scared. Confident, but deeply worried of a bad performance. That was until everyone reminded me of the true purpose of music: The pleasing of the human ear to enjoy an experience. I played my best music and everyone was satisfied, not due to the quality of performance or any deliberate skill, rather that I tried my best. To my parents and Kru A (I hope you will recover soon!), thank you for the hours, the patience, and the belief. My thanks also extends to Kru Oun and Kru Oat for helping me refine my techniques. I am holding this award for all of us, as it surely would have been indefinitely impossible to achieve without the excellent support from all for you. So, thank you. :D Rin G6
