—— With the aim of promoting the understanding and appreciation of contemporary art, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is expected to open at the Saadiyat Cultural District in 2017. Designed by internationally renowned American architect Frank Gehry, the museum will support a transnational curatorial programme of art and visual culture from the 1960s to present day. “The museum’s transcultural narrative theme examines the crosscurrents among cultures and worldly concepts, where each gallery will tell a distinct notion that came to focus with the passage of time across cultures and places. The 1960s period was chosen as the starting point for the museum’s collection due to it being an age of significant political, social, and cultural change worldwide, in large measure, which was made possible by the propagation of mass media, the emergence of a vital youth culture, and on-going nation building initiatives in the wake of the collapse of the colonial system,” explains Maisa Al Qassimi, programmes manager in the Museums Department for the Culture Sector of Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority, and a co-curator

of Guggenheim Abu Dhabi’s inaugural exhibition Seeing Through Light: Selections from the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Collection that was hosted early in 2015. Spanning 450,000 square feet, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will be the largest Guggenheim in the world. While each one is a distinct cultural institution, what makes the Abu Dhabi chapter different from its sister museums in New York and Bilbao is its geographical location and focus on artists from, and working in, the Middle East as Maisa Al Qassimi explains. “Given its location in the Middle East—as a central axis between Europe, Asia, and North Africa—Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is uniquely positioned to present art history from different and novel vantages, encompassing multiple modernisms and various points of origin and trajectories of contemporary art and culture. “Rather than an emphasis on geography or nationality, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will focus on the realities of our increasingly interconnected and interdependent world, where local, regional, and international sources of creative inspiration often cross and merge.”

Since its beginning, Montblanc has used its considerable knowledge and expertise to elevate the humble pen to an entirely different status all together. The Maison has led the way with some of the world’s most extraordinary writing instruments, and when you take the time to consider what’s underneath the cap, it’s easy to see why the term instrument fits so well. Following on from the company’s launch in 1906, the German brand went on to apply the same successful formula to craft stunning wristwatches and a selection of leather goods that are every bit as coveted as its writing ranges. However, the focus has never strayed from the legacy at the company’s heart. From the iconic Meisterstück pen used by presidents to sign historic treaties and the Great Characters pieces which pay tribute to the inspiring minds of the last century, to the ultimate in contemporary writing, the sleek Montblanc M. “The Maison is a complex setup in terms of our approach, with our leather coming from an Italian team, the watches coming from Switzerland and the writing instruments from Germany. If we are good at what we do, it is because each of these activities is very much sourced from the best area for each of these disciplines,” says Jérôme Lambert, Montblanc CEO.

“Particularly for the writing instruments, it is even more crucial that we are the best, and the only centre for these techniques. The Maison is the essential expression of fine writing today, there are young guys at the manufacture trained to do things that they will be the only person in the world to do,” adds Lambert. —— In the Artisan Studio at Montblanc’s Headquarters in Hamburg, a new crop of craftsmen and women are nurtured as time-honoured techniques are handed down the generations. Lambert explains it’s a place of quiet concentration, where passionate artists hone their craft. He says: “It’s very much a workshop culture, you have quite sophisticated and elaborate processes taking place in each of the different workshops – you have different experts, different approaches, and you see at each stage quite a big evolution of the product itself. For example, at the nib workshop, everything is done there from the cutting to the decoration of the nib and the preparation. There is a great sense of responsibility as we take forward skills of the past into modern lines. “Creating a bridge between modern times and tradition is something which is a given when it comes to a Maison like ours. A lot of the training is on the job from our masters, we have around 40 young guys that are in a three-to-four-year programme, learning all about our technical craftsmanship. From tooling to injection, at every stage it’s a journey we have to plan carefully. Most of the artisans have been with the brand for 25 to 40 years; they have spent their lives working for the Maison.”

Some of the world’s most iconic writing instruments have come from the renowned manufacture, not least the famed Meisterstück. The pen was first created in 1924 as a fountain pen, and has since been issued in a ballpoint and rollerball. Down the years the impressive roster of names to have used the pen include Winston Churchill, Nelson Mandela and Ernest Hemingway. There is also of course the famous story of 1963 when during a ceremony German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer borrowed a Meisterstück from John F. Kennedy to sign the Golden Book of the city of Cologne. Still as important to the brand today, the Meisterstück boasts an 18 carat gold handcrafted nib complete with platinum inlay, gold-plated clip and a barrel coated in black-precious resin for an exquisite finish. Elsewhere, Montblanc has capitalised on a link between history’s most creative characters and its pens. Some of the world’s greatest authors, from Leo Tolstoy to Honoré de Balzac, have been celebrated with a special edition piece in the Writers Edition collection. Special touches honouring the authors include detailing on the caps and nib to ref lect their greatest works, as well as inscriptions of their signatures. In a similar vein, the Great Characters collection presents stunning limited-edition pieces dedicated to the last century’s greatest personalities, such as Kennedy and Leonardo Da Vinci. “There is a synergy between some of history’s most creative figures and great thinkers, and what we do at Montblanc. It makes sense for us. The craftsmanship and passion embodied in each and every piece over the decades is truly special and reflects a natural link to some of these characters,” says Lambert.

—— With an eye firmly on future innovation, the brand’s recent triumph, the Montblanc M, is a bold new writing instrument and is the result of a collaboration with edgy designer Marc Newson. Lambert says: “This is the first time in the history of the company, in 109 years, that we have collaborated with a designer on a writing instrument – this has been a long time coming. I have known Marc for a long time, I have collaborated with him before and I recognised in him a truly amazing artist.” Launched a few months ago, the Montblanc M caused a stir with its new look. The distinctive shape boasts a plateau at the end while the black resin finish gives a stylish feel. The iconic Montblanc emblem appears twice, on the cap and at the end of the plateau. Elsewhere, clever additions include a magnetic cap to close with ease. It’s available as a fountain pen, rollerball, ballpoint and as a thin Montblanc Artefineliner for technical drawing. To celebrate the release, Montblanc chose eight calligraphy artists from the Middle East to draw a link between the Montblanc M and the ancient art form. “The pieces of art that have been created are quite amazing, being a pure handwritten word, calligraphy is a very powerful link with this region as it’s a local tradition dating back centuries. chosen have, in some cases, used some of the oldest and most difficult calligraphy styles, but interpreted them in such a contemporary way,” says Lambert. Each artist was asked to depict a distinctive landmark or symbol of their country, using their preferred style of calligraphy, and the Montblanc M for the initial sketch.The works include Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, Kingdom Tower in Saudi Arabia, a landscape of old Jeddah and a geographical map of Oman.The pieces will be exhibited in Montblanc boutiques across the GCC and reproduced as a limited edition coffee table book and collectible postcards. Emirati artist Hamda Al Hashemi created a stunning portrait of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, adding subtle touches of colour with Montblanc inks as an added reference to the UAE. “I chose a landmark from Abu Dhabi as I live there. There were lots of landmarks to choose from but most were commercial buildings and that doesn’t really relate to anything about Abu Dhabi or its identity. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque of course does that and it’s one of the most beautiful mosques I have been to, even inside the mosque itself, there’s a lot of beautiful calligraphy,” says 24-year-old Al Hashemi. The piece Al Hashemi created makes the most of colour and adopts an interesting perspective to draw the viewer in and really make it stand out. Al Hashemi explains: “I didn’t want to create a two-dimensional building, so I chose the entrance to try to show the feeling that people have when they enter, and I added a couple of figures, just to add more life. I decided to go for the colours of the UAE flag so there’s a bit of red in it and a hint of

green, and of course black. The Montblanc inks are really beautiful colours. The paper itself also has the same marble effect as you see at the mosque, I actually stumbled upon it in an old shop. I had it for a long time so I decided it would go perfectly with this piece.” She adds: “I’m really proud of this, I’m hoping I can develop my own calligraphy style, I wish I could master all kinds of calligraphy but in some cases it takes 20 years to master a style, it’s all about perfecting it and getting the angle right, hopefully one day I’d be able to reach that.” For the Dubai calligraphy piece, the team at Montblanc turned to creative young artist 20-yearold Ali Kashwani. “Montblanc found me through Instagram, they found my work interesting and it fits the style they were looking for,” says Kashwani. Each artist was given the freedom to choose any landmark from their country, but for Kashwani, it could only be one. He says: “I thought it was interesting to mix Burj Khalifa which is a modern building with calligraphy which is an ancient art. Burj Khalifa is a difficult shape to represent, but I have an interesting approach to calligraphy, I like to paint using the words, so instead of trying to just depict the building, I wanted to represent the whole scene using calligraphy. That was my perspective on the piece. “To represent Dubai is a great honour. I think that this collaboration with Montblanc is amazing, it’s a privilege to work with such an international brand. In the future, I would like to present more pieces of art that represent my country and region, and to leave a mark in the big picture.”

ART OF FASHION ——— UAE-based designer Rami Al Ali presents a new couture collection to covet

The fashion capitals of France, Italy and America have long been regarded as destinations of inspiration, creativity and style, but the Middle East region is rapidly gaining a reputation for design talent thanks to the rise of couture designers such as Elie Saab, Georges Chakra and Zuhair Murad. They have each crafted a special presence on the world stage and joining them is man of the moment, Rami Al Ali, with his show-stealing ethereal style. Born in Deir ez-Zor, a city in east Syria, Rami Al Ali has always been interested in the arts and, as the only son of five children, was introduced to fashion at a young age. While studying visual communications at Damascus’ College of Fine Arts, he made the bold decision to design and present a fashion show as his graduation project, offering a unique take on fine arts through fashion. “I always knew my career would take a creative route. It wasn’t until I prepared for my graduation project, where I decided to conduct a fashion show, that I realised fashion would form a big part of my future. My plan B was to move to the States to continue my studies, however fate decided differently,” says Al Ali.

In 1995 the fledgling designer moved to the UAE and quickly found himself in the spotlight. He gained a loyal client base through his atelier in Dubai, contributing to the vibrant status the city’s style scene currently enjoys. Over the last decade, Dubai has emerged as something of a regional fashion hub with high-profile events such as Vogue Fashion Dubai Experience and Fashion Forward attracting international talent, while also acting as a showcase for emerging Middle Eastern designers. This provided the perfect environment for Al Ali. “The fashion scene here is definitely growing and becoming stronger. This wasn’t the case a few years ago. We see the investment and initiatives in Dubai, such as d3 (Dubai Design District). Of course, the market is new and not as mature as Paris or New York, but it’s being built and that creates a lot of opportunities,” explains Al Ali. Drawing on a host of sources for inspiration, Al Ali still regards his college professor’s words as the best advice he’s been given, ‘to create something new,

you must get rid of something old’. For the enigmatic designer, the words still ring true as he strives to innovate wherever possible. “My inspiration comes from everywhere and anything. It could be a recent holiday destination or even a song. Once I’m inspired, more ideas start coming to mind that I then research and keep exploring, moulding into something new. That’s how it all starts and you can see the final result at my shows,” he says. Al Ali is now one of Dubai’s hottest fashion exports. He made his European debut in 2009 when he presented his Spring/Summer couture line at Rome’s AltaRoma Couture Week, and then in Paris at the 2012 Couture Fashion Week. With celebrated couture, bridal and prêt-à-porter collections for women, global attention has seen a number of his pieces coveted by celebrities and socialites. “I’m lucky to have dressed a number of A-list celebrities in recent years including Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland and Jennifer Lopez to name a few, and I’m looking forward to seeing who will wear my dresses in the future. wears couture very well and it would be great to see her in one of my designs,” says Al Ali. His Autumn/Winter 2015 couture collection was recently showcased in the Empire Room at La Maison Champs Elysées in Paris, his eighth consecutive presentation in the French capital. “Every season, the excitement and procedure never changes. I still get very anxious and thrilled from the moment the models appear on stage and only feel relieved once it’s over. It’s the end and the beginning in the same moment. The collection showcased has been very well received and I’m very happy with the feedback,” says Al Ali. The lavish collection was inspired by the 1950s, when Hollywood’s golden era was at its most glamorous. The designer uses luxurious fabrics, pastel colours, geometric beadwork and volume to present a wistful vintage feel. It’s all about celebrating femininity, which is why demand for Rami Al Ali’s couture shows no sign of slowing down. Priced on request, every dress is tailored to specification and crafted by hand. A dedicated team handles couture orders, which typically involves a couple of appointments and fittings. From the initial brief that takes into account desired fabrics and looks, sketches are then drawn up and fabric swatches produced when the client meets with Al Ali. Details and measurements can be honed further before the dress is crafted and

From younger women who want something cutting-edge, to the older woman who is looking for something sophisticated,” explains Al Ali. When the designer isn’t working on new collections in Dubai or presenting in Paris, he enjoys travelling the world: “I’m very much a city person at heart and I love visiting big cities such as NewYork. I enjoy cosmopolitan places where you can sit in a coffee shop and watch the world go by, taking in people’s behaviour, body language and the way they dress. I also love the relaxed environment of the Mediterranean, in particular the west coast of Italy, south of France and Greek islands. “I like visiting the older areas of Dubai such as the creek.There is a lot of culture and heritage, including art galleries, museums and quaint cafés.This is where Dubai started,” says Al Ali of the city that’s helped define his career. Nasif Kayed is an important figure in the UAE community. As the managing director of Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU), he is at the forefront of efforts not only to safeguard, but also to share, the nation’s rich history and culture. Aside from giving lectures all over the country, Kayed runs a lively programme at SMCCU, a traditional house in Dubai’s oldest quarter which has opened its doors to a steady stream of visitors eager to learn all about the local way of life. Central to Kayed’s work is the unearthing of stories which have been handed down the generations.

“People are very thirsty for knowledge, for the true history of exactly what has happened in our culture, particularly in pearl diving, fishing and trading,” says Kayed. “Aside from our programme of tours, workshops, and the chance to sit down for a traditional Emirati meal with a local host, we also hold regular lectures from some of the country’s greatest historians. These events are very important. After the lectures we find that people leave feeling that they have learned something.” Long before oil, the UAE’s lifeblood was pearling and fishing along the Arabian Gulf. Its humble harbours of Abu Dhabi and Dubai grew up around their respective waterways, where communities thrived from the hard-won spoils of the sea. Tales of life back then are not only gripping, but give a greater understanding of the nation today. Pearl diving in particular was a dangerous pursuit, which saw men dive to the bottom of the sea, holding their breath with only rudimentary equipment, as they hunted for pearls. Kayed says: “Luckily there are people who are willing to sit and talk about their experiences. At any majlis where the older people gather, such as the Jumeirah fishermen’s majlis or the diving

association, you can hear the stories. When they gather, you could have more than 100 of them there, and I just go along to sit and talk to whoever is there. “Their stories are often about how terrifying it was, being so far down underwater and trying to survive. Some of them told me stories of getting sick when they were underwater, but when you are in the sea, you are in the sea, you just had to keep on going and overcome it. One of the old pearl divers told me about a time when he started to hallucinate and dream under the ocean, he had no idea what was happening to him, it was terrifying. He told me when he finally returned to the surface, he felt like he was waking from a nightmare. There are also interesting stories from the divers who would come across fish and creatures they had never seen before. Of course, in the old days, they didn’t have cameras so they only had their memories to rely on to try and describe exactly what they came across to others. “There are lots of stories and what is amazing is that when they came back from sea, they would sit in a majlis and tell their tales. These guys would be out at sea for four months at a time, so as you

can imagine, they had vivid memories of the things that happened to them. They came back and told their stories, that’s why the majlis is so cool, you sit and you talk about life experiences. “I think it is so important to keep these stories alive, I know them from my father and grandfather but it’s difficult to pass on the knowledge these days. My kids know the iPad and social media, when I try to tell them about grandpa’s experiences diving under water, they find it boring. That’s why, at the SMCCU, I try and create a lively experience for people, to come and hear these stories and to have fun with it.” Kayed adds: “We really lack, and need to put effort into, making short documentaries on these subjects, about the pearl divers’ experiences. We just haven’t invested in it, but we should reconsider it. Once these people are dead, then that’s it, it’s lost, no more tales, no more history, no more how it used to be.” Thankfully, places like SMCCU are leading the way when it comes to providing a space where people can share in the past, and gain a deeper understanding of life as it is in the emirates now. The centre’s location, in the heart of Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood,

itself provides a window into the emirate’s history. It’s the oldest area in Dubai where the city’s pearl divers lived in humble homes on the banks of the creek. “Having travelled the world, I always came across in any city I visited, some sort of collaboration between local cultures and the people visiting the area. I felt that something along those lines was needed here. People used to come and say that there was no one here to take them and teach them about Emirati culture. In 2007, the SMCCU became a mission to create that space. I knew we needed to turn it into something more than a museum, more interactive. “For us, the SMCCU at least creates a platform and an outlet for people to go to for an actual interaction about the culture, heritage and history. To hear it first hand from someone who has lived it, and is part of it, rather than reading displays in a museum. The part of my job I enjoy most is when you see that you have opened someone’s mind. When I talk to people and explain about our way of life, they tell me it’s like a breath of fresh air, they have changed their mindset and have become more open. That is the greatest feeling in the world.”

SHIVANI PANDYA ——— The managing director of Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) gives the inside track on this month’s glittering cinema showcase

I believe that DIFF is the most incredible event Dubai hosts, and, to achieve that, a huge amount of work goes in from the entire team. In the last 12 years alone, we’ve had the honour of welcoming HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum – his presence is the best way to start the festival. We’ve had thunderstorms hit the red carpet, last-minute celebrity confirmations and arrivals, and so many other surprises, all the while thinking ahead to the next edition. Our activity peaks during the second half of the year as films are selected, talent and guests are invited, events are planned, and logistics and operations are locked down. As the festival nears, sleep deprivation becomes a way of life. A programme of 128 films from 40 countries requires the team to be alert and available for all conceivable time zones, at all times. We’re negotiating, finalising, sourcing information, scheduling, blocking tickets, rooms, hiring and more. It really is a whirlwind of activity. Throughout the year it’s busy too, one of the main perks of my job is that I get to watch some incredible films. I also travel to international festivals such as Cannes, which is a big event in our calendar. I also make a

point to attend the Berlinale, Telluride and Mumbai festivals. It’s important for us that we are doing everything to ensure DIFF represents Dubai in the best way, retains its status as a leading film festival and is a true champion for Arab cinema. We have some fantastic elements to look forward to this year and of course, an excellent programme of films. Many will divide the team and we will end up debating which ones to include for hours. When it comes to the opening night film, we will be locked in a room for what can seem like days going through our top list. We have so many front runners for the opening spotlight this year, all with their own story to tell, all brilliantly cinematic and all deserved of the platform. We have some exciting big names again this year, including Jake Gyllenhaal who is attending to pick up the Variety Magazine International Star of the Year award. We also have the legendary Richard Dreyfuss who will be coming along to our special outdoor screening of Jaws, at The Beach cinema, to mark the 40th anniversary of the film. In the Muhr Competition this year we have 60 of the latest films from the Arab world competing. I’m really thrilled to see

An important part of our festival is the Dubai Film Market. We are determined to support Arab filmmaking and act as a catalyst to the organic development of the local film industry. Since its inception, the Dubai Film Market has supported over 270 projects; and co-produced over 120 films which have gone on to enjoy critical acclaim and find new audiences across the globe. So much of our existence depends on building relationships and networking with the rest of the world. We have some truly unique talent here and brilliant ideas. As a platform, our purpose is to ensure that this pool of creative talent acquires the necessary acumen and makes the right connections to help them grow and reach a broader audience.

Nearly a year old and Asia de Cuba at Nation Riviera Beach Club, The St. Regis Abu Dhabi is already creating a buzz on the capital’s culinary scene.With locations in NewYork and London, the Abu Dhabi venue boasts an enviable location right on the Corniche beachfront and visitors can choose to dine at the lounge, restaurant or beach deck complete with a fantastic outdoor bar and elegant cabanas. Presented with celebratory flair, the menu is made up of ‘Chino-Latino’ fusion fare championed by Asia de Cuba’s Cuban-born global executive chef Luis Pous. Contrary to popular belief, Chino-Latino fare is not a new concept. Towards the late 19th century, Chinese immigrants settled in Cuba and they began to infuse traditional recipes such as fried rice with local ingredients. Havana’s Chinatown soon became one of the largest in Latin America. It wasn’t long before traditional Chinese culinary influences made their way into Cuban cooking, and a delicious fusion of flavours was born. Chinatown in Havana continued to thrive in the 1950s but a decade later, Cuban chefs faced challenges with local supply and culinary evolution came to a standstill. Today chef Pous honours his country’s rich past and presents a signature take on Chino-Latino fare by blending cultural influences along with restaurateur Jeffrey Chodorow’s vision for Asia de Cuba. “Jeffrey Chodorow first reached out to me in 2013 and I joined in January of 2014. I declined at first but he insisted as it was a great opportunity to showcase what Cuba is and especially with me being Cuban. It was hard to say no,” explains chef Pous. For chef Pous, cooking “was the only thing I ever wanted to do”. He started his career training at the National School of Culinary Arts in Havana, where he prepared meals for numerous diplomats and foreign dignitaries, before arriving in the United States in 1997 to become a chef at Big Fish restaurant on the Miami River. Chef Pous later became executive chef of the acclaimed Little Palm Island Resort & Spa before joining Asia de Cuba, and today sees a lot of potential in the UAE capital. “I feel that the culinary scene is still in the early stages in Abu Dhabi. There are a lot of big names that are coming to open restaurants, although, I would like to see more chef driven restaurant openings in the area but it’s

heading in the right direction and that’s a good start. Also, a lot of people are embracing new restaurants, which is great,” explains chef Pous. At Asia de Cuba Abu Dhabi, visitors can enjoy an eclectic menu that includes small plates of Wagyu spring rolls and signature mains such as lotus leaf steamed Chilean sea bass or Asian grilled lamb chops served with black bean and roasted corn hash. There’s even a hint of Arabia on the menu. “I love Middle Eastern cuisine; I think it’s full of flavour. In our culture we are used to using similar grains and spices such as saffron and cumin – one thing we came up with is our black bean hummus, which has become popular,” says chef Pous. He is already thinking of implementing a few other dishes but is quick to reassure that the classics will remain, believing that “people like consistency and that dishes they love are still on the menu.” The restaurant’s ceviche bar is a definite highlight, and the mix of flavours across different cuisines is bold and distinctive, but also very comforting. “Tuna and seared foie gras ceviche is a signature. To me tuna doesn’t have a lot of flavour. Combining it with ginger and orange and searing the foie gras and pairing it together with the dressing goes together so well. Also, the lamb chops are prepared the same way we would in Cuba (except with pork) and served in a familial setting. “I want people here to feel as if they’re in Cuba, where everyone is welcome and treated like family. There’s a big meal prepared and they enjoy both the company and the food,” explains chef Pous. Nothing brings people together more than good food, after all, and there are plans to introduce a regular salsa night where lively classes are paired with dinner and visitors can discover more about Latin American culture. Passionate about his heritage, it is immediately evident that chef Pous is also very much the family man, happily admitting that he loves his wife Ines Diez’s breakfast that includes “poached eggs, kimchi and sprouted wheat toast with her Cuban coffee”. For him, food is the most important thing in life; it just tastes better with family, which also explains Asia de Cuba’s welcome approach to capital dining. 5 SHEIKH ZAYED GRAND MOSQUE Built by the late Sheikh Zayed to help create a bridge between faiths and create greater cross-cultural understanding, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a must-see for any visitor to Abu Dhabi. The third-largest mosque in the world, this majestic structure is comprised of over 1,000 columns and 82 domes embellished with semi-precious stones, gold and marble. Inside, the spectacle is equally impressive with glittering chandeliers, spectacular floral motifs adorning the walls and a vast hand-woven Persian carpet in the main prayer hall.

Abu Dhabi attracts about two million travellers annually and this number has been increasing with each passing year. The emirate strives to preserve and promote its rich cultural and historic heritage. At the same time, through an extensive programme of cultural events, exhibitions and museum development, it places this legacy in a global context, fostering international understanding while promoting Abu Dhabi as a cultural, sustainable destination worldwide. The UAE capital is a dynamic, modern city with grand boulevards, gleaming skyscrapers, high-rise apartment buildings and bustling shopping malls. With its many attractions, the emirate offers a host of opportunities for visitors to experience the very best. While in Abu Dhabi, start the weekend at the Corniche, a stunning four-mile promenade that has many places where you can stop off and enjoy a picnic. Stroll the entire length in an afternoon, or to speed things up, hire a bike and pedal around the venue. With views of the Arabian Gulf, this is the best place to get a good shot of the city’s glittering skyscrapers.

Yas Island, near the airport, is another popular destination with a host of attractions. Yas Waterworld, said to be the world’s biggest water park, offers a dizzying choice of raft rides, slides, thrilling ravines and endless wave machines. Next door is Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, the first theme park dedicated to the illustrious racing car. The must-try ride here is the world’s fastest rollercoaster Formula Rossa which goes from zero to 240 kilometres per hour in less than five seconds. Abu Dhabi’s Formula 1 track can also be found on the island and visitors can stay fit by running or cycling around Yas Marina Circuit every Tuesday for free. Masdar City is definitely worth a visit. Cars are not allowed to enter this pioneering zerocarbon development that is powered entirely by the sun and wind. It may only be the size of a village at present but there’s much more to come. In my opinion, no other Muslim country presents the true face of Islamic culture better than the UAE and Abu Dhabi offers a wide range of historical and cultural attractions. Stop by Al Hosn Palace (Qasr Al Hosn), the oldest stone building in the city, before heading to the Women’s Craft Centre where Emirati women showcase traditional handicrafts. No visit to Abu Dhabi would be complete without stopping by Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. The striking mosque is open daily to visitors, except on Friday morning, which is reserved for worshippers. Head there in the evening as the sun sets and the mosque is illuminated in a peaceful blue light, which gives it a very serene feel. End your weekend by lounging at the emirate’s golden beaches or by heading out into the desert to experience a different side of the city. There visitors can try desert driving or camp out under the stars and enjoy the cooler weather.
