Abu Dhabi is bursting with excellent restaurants so its worth taking the time to really explore the city's up-and-coming dining scene. If guests are looking for a high-end culinary experience, I send them to 55&5th, The Grill at The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort. This is the hotel's signature venue, named after the address of the original St. Regis in New York. Those looking for a more homely approach can head to La Mamma, the Italian eatery in Sheraton Abu Dhabi, or try our romantic Spanish restaurant, Bravo, which serves an excellent selection of tapas dishes. For Arabian fare, diners are faced with an abundance of excellent options but few can claim to be better than Al Mayass, the Lebanese-Armenian venue at Sheraton Abu Dhabi. During the day, visitors can explore the sights and take advantage of the city's many attractions. The first port of call should be the stunning Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Not only is it beautifully crafted from an architectural perspective, but it also represents the spirit of this proud emirate perfectly. One of the best ways to see all that the city has to offer is a chauffeured tour. The dress codes of the different Gulf states vary subtly. In the UAE, men opt for a crisp white kandoura teamed with a white ghutra or headdress while the preference in some neighbouring countries, including Saudi Arabia and Oman, is towards checked or coloured fabric. The ghutra is worn over a tight crochet skullcap known as a gahfiyya and held in place by the coiled agal band.

A typical Arabic meal begins with a mezze of salads, savoury pastries, dips and other sharing dishes before the mixed grill, an assortment of meats or seafood, is brought out and placed in the centre of the table. All Gulf countries have their own variation on this cuisine which, these days, is more accurately described as pan-Arab fare and is readily available in restaurants across the capital. In the UAE, traditional Emirati cuisine is harder to source as it is generally served by local families in their homes. Stretching eight kilometres along the city’s picturesque coastline, Abu Dhabi Corniche is a great spot for an evening stroll in the summer months. The path runs right beside the ocean and a pleasant breeze whips in off the sea. At one end, a cluster of beachside cafés serve up a selection of cuisines from Arabic saj bread to salads, sandwiches and more. If it’s too hot to walk, visitors can hop on a bicycle or Segway and ride along the landscaped path at their leisure, enjoying views of the Arabian Gulf on one side and the striking architecture of the city’s waterfront skyscrapers on the other.

Discover Yola dance

Commonly seen at Emirati celebrations and cultural events, the yola is a traditional dance performed by UAE men. It begins with two groups facing one another. The first spin and throw up their canes or replica rifles while the others chant poetry at the top of their voices. Visitors can watch this theatrical spectacle at local festivals or on television, where yola dance competitions are often aired.

In motion Abu Dhabi is a rising star of the global film industry as both a destination and a rich source of talent

With an increasing number of production teams arriving in the capital, Abu Dhabi is becoming a regular feature in Hollywood blockbusters. Star Wars Episode VII, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and Fast & Furious 7 are a few of the biggest movies to have been filmed in the UAE in recent years. Yet, far more than simply acting as a scenic backdrop, the emirates are home to many up-andcoming talents and the companies who support them. Abu Dhabi-based company Image Nation plays a key role in the local film industry, from producing movies and television programmes to launching development projects and initiatives working with upcoming Emirati talent. In a bid to nurture such individuals, the company has also enlisted the help of top Hollywood producers who’ve worked on world-famous motion pictures to mentor some of the emirate’s aspiring filmmakers. Concierge talks to industry experts about Abu Dhabi’s appeal as a film destination and how the UAE movie industry is developing.

Location In 2009, Emirati film City of Life offered the world a significant insight into life in the UAE. Written, directed and produced by local filmmaker Ali F Mostafa, it was one of the first full-length feature films to come out of the UAE and arguably the country’s first globally successful movie. Approaching society from both sides of the wealth scale, through the eyes of a local family and an expatriate taxi driver, the motion picture received mixed critiques for its portrayal of the city of Dubai. Its success, however, was certainly a sign of things to come. Since then, as the UAE has developed and global interest in the

country has grown, the nation has been used as a film set for a number of movie, from Bollywood hits to multi-billion-dollar Hollywood blockbusters. Boasting incredibly varied landscapes, location scouts have a wealth of settings to choose from here with rolling desert dunes, coastal cityscapes, towering buildings and luxury hotels among the options. In 2014 alone, casts and crews from two big-budget Hollywood movies travelled to Abu Dhabi to film scenes in the capital. First, stars from Fast and Furious 7 were spotted shooting scenes at Emirates Palace, where the arrival of luxury vehicles

together with the filming of high-speed races on the UAE’s highways caused a stir. Most recently, Star Wars Episode VII crews were spotted setting up camp in the desert outside the city on a film set that Abu Dhabi representatives are considering preserving. “ T he UA E is fast becom i ng t he geographic, cultural and financial centre of the new world. The eyes of the world are focused on the entire region. Abu Dhabi’s unique cultural resources and varied locations, combined with luxury and safety, make it a capital city to rival the likes of New York and London as film destinations,” says Michael Garin, Image Nation CEO.

Behind the lens

The local film industry, while still developing, now seems to be on an upward trajectory. Garin says: “Image Nation’s mission is to build the foundations of a strong film and television industry in the UAE. We want to accomplish this through local and international activities and by developing talent within the UAE, supporting them through international partnerships and investments.” The company has developed a number of strong locally made films, such as film festival favourite Sea Shadow and the first Emirati horror Djinn. It has also produced a number of television shows such as Beyond Borders, a documentary series following six young

Emiratis on a life-changing journey to the Philippines, and My Military/My Life, a five-part series offering a rare look at life inside the UAE military. Currently, Image Nation is working on City of Life director Mostafa’s second film From A to B, in partnership with twofour54, an Abu Dhabi government initiative to support the development of Arabic media and entertainment content.

Local talent Mostafa isn’t the only successful filmmaker the UAE has produced. Image Nation has launched several special initiatives to find and cultivate new talent from the region, such as Arab Film Studio, an introductory programme and amateur film competition for aspiring filmmakers. Garin explains: “We scout for budding filmmakers from across the GCC who participate in an intensive boot camp where they learn all the skills needed to produce their first short film. We’ve been overwhelmed with the level of talent to come through our doors and each year it gets better and better.” One of the programme’s most promising recruits is filmmaker and television presenter Omar Butti who, after participating, went on to take part in a global competition to create a documentary for the United Nations.

Another initiative to nurture talent is Mawaheb, a project that offers Emiratis internships on film and television productions, both locally and abroad. Garin says: “We use our links to create internships where candidates work on Hollywood sets and learn the tricks of the trade. Parkes+MacDonald and Hyde Park Entertainment are our two most important international partnerships providing experience that doesn’t yet exist in our region.They are also a source of profits that support our local activities.”

a documentary movie about Pakistani student Malala Yousafzai who survived being shot after standing up for her right to education. “The film is being directed by the award-winning Davis Guggenheim and aspiring Emirati filmmakers also have the chance to be involved,” Parkes adds. Thanks to local and international investment, stunning landscapes and a wealth of talent, the UAE’s film industry is set to flourish. Image Nation’s Garin adds: “I think the UAE is well on its way to becoming an important location for international film and television productions.”

International relations Walter Parkes, of Parkes+MacDonald, is a Hollywood film producer and writer who has worked on a long list of blockbusters such as the Men in Black series, Golden Globe-winner Sweeney Todd, and Oscar-winner Gladiator. Parkes and his wife, fellow producer Laurie MacDonald, formed a partnership with Image Nation five years ago which sees the couple draw on their vast experience to aid the local film industry. “Everyone, whether in Hollywood or Abu Dhabi, is faced with the same task, which is to identify and develop ideas that are sufficiently engaging,” Parkes says. He cites his greatest regional achievement so far as Malala: A Girl from Paradise,

Written in the stars For centuries the night skies have guided inhabitants of this region, enabling them to cross a vast, empty desert, sail uncharted seas and even forecast weather and farming conditions based on the cycles of the stars

This month, observers of the night sky will witness the first indication of summer’s decline as the longawaited Suhail star rises, heralding the return of cooler weather. The initial sighting, which always occurs on August 22 in the UAE, marks the beginning of the old droror agricultural calendar, by which the local Bedouin people once planned their annual farming cycle. Suhail isn’t the only star in the night sky that signals seasonal change. The inhabitants of this region have a long-standing tradition of using the cosmos as a guide for the terrestrial world and it was once common practice to anticipate everything from wind patterns and temperatures to crop cycles and animal behaviour by gazing up at the night sky and interpreting the arrangement of the stars. Today, few people are acquainted with the old droror calendar. Most of those who understood the system, which operates by dividing the year into 10-day portions, each based on the rising and setting of a star, are no longer with us, says Hasan Ahmad Al Hariri, chief executive of the Dubai Astronomy Group. In addition, global climate change has made previously regular patterns less predictable and this decline in reliability has become a common joke among local elders who will ask one another: “Did your calendar work this year?”

long journeys across the desert. With only the occasional tree or rock formation to act as a landmark, Bedouin travellers relied heavily on the sun, moon and stars for guidance as they passed through the unvarying landscape, often for weeks at a time. Closer to the shore, fishermen and pearl divers consulted the night sky to determine the appropriate times of year to begin their seasonal work, while Arab sailors relied heavily on the stellar map to navigate the seas. In the 15th century an Arabic seaman from the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah named Ahmed bin Majid undertook a

Al Hariri is one of those trying to preserve this ancient knowledge, once vital to the survival of local Bedouin tribes. “Based on the droror, those who lived inland knew when to raise cattle, when to sow seeds and when to cultivate fruit, vegetables and dates,” he says. Farmers would anticipate the arrival of the Antares star in June, which meant the correct conditions for the date harvest would soon follow, while a sighting of Al Murzim signalled the start of the hot period when there could be no cultivation at all. The stars were also a vital tool for nomadic tribes and tradesman undertaking

ground-breaking voyage across the Indian Ocean using only the stars and a single chart to guide him. In doing so, he opened up new routes for Arab sailors who had formerly clung to the coast as they travelled between the subcontinent and Sri Lanka rather than venturing out unaided into the rough seas of the Indian Ocean. Bin Majid wrote a number of authoritative treatises on sailing and navigation, including The Book of Useful Information on the Principles and Rules of Navigation, which was regarded as the definitive reference on the subject at the time. Known as the ‘lion of the sea’ he is also popularly believed to have helped the famous Portuguese explorer, Vasco de Gama, find his way from Africa to India, using the stars to guide him. The navigation techniques used by Bin Majid are part of a rich legacy of astronomical breakthroughs made in the Arab world, mostly during the Islamic Golden Age from the eighth century to the 15th. Islam in the seventh century, Muslim scientists began applying mathematical methods to the study of the skies, building on the findings of the Greek, Indian and Sassanid astronomers that preceded them to expand their knowledge and fulfil their religious commitment. “The Holy Qur’an encourages Muslims to benefit from the observation of the stars in navigation. As a result, from the early Islamic period, Arab-Islamic scientists have exerted much effort in observing and charting the night skies and the movement of the heavenly bodies,” explains Dr Ulrike Al Khamis, the Islamic and Middle East arts collection adviser at the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilisation.

All Muslims are expected to have a basic understanding of astronomy. “Islam is very closely aligned with celestial objects. Without the appearance of the crescent moon, for example, we would not be able to begin Ramadan and it’s through observation of the sun that we determine prayer times,” Al Hariri says. He is quick to point out, however, that while astronomy is fundamental to Islam, astrology, the study of the positions and aspects of celestial bodies in the belief that they influence human affairs, is prohibited. “When Islam arrived in the year 610, it clearly separated astronomy – a science everyone should understand – and astrology which is considered condemned knowledge. Astronomy is based on the laws of nature. It is factual, whereas astrology is an abuse of scientific knowledge. In Islam, we believe that anyone who goes to an astrologer will suffer 40 days of unaccepted prayers and if he or she believes the astrologer’s predictions, then that person will become a non-Muslim.” There are several astronomy organisations in the UAE that offer visitors the opportunity to get involved. In Dubai, Al Hariri’s organisation runs regular star-gazing excursions for its 3,000-plus members and anyone else who wants to

go along. “Whenever a meteor shower, an eclipse, a comet sighting or something else is due to take place in the skies, we go out to our observatory or another location to witness it, though it doesn’t have to be a major celestial event to occasion a trip. There are regular star-gazing parties where we offer basic tips on astronomy for newcomers and just enjoy looking at the stars,” he says. The group also runs ‘astro-tourism’ excursions and teams up with local tour companies to provide a celestial experience as part of a larger package. Private trips can be organised by contacting the

club directly for those who want to tailor a trip to their precise requirements or individuals can call up to find out when the next group session is planned. In Abu Dhabi, visitors can get in touch with Andy Palado who established the Abu Dhabi Astronomy Group in 2007 so that local enthusiasts could share their passion and develop their knowledge of the cosmos. Wit h hundreds of miles of empt y desert, the UAE capital offers the perfect environment for astronomers. Those who want a really good view of the sky must travel about 100 kilometres away from the city to escape the light pollution but, on a clear night, their efforts will be rewarded by a stunning stellar panorama. According to Palado, one of the best places for observations in the UAE is Liwa. “Out here, there is absolutely nothing but desert for miles and miles and the whole night sky is illuminated by stars. You get a sense of what the old astronomers must have felt when they looked up at the sky from their simple Bedouin camps to read the patterns of the cosmos and that feeling is priceless.”

AL JAHILI FORT

Once the summer residence and a symbol of power for the ruling Al Nahyan family, Al Jahili Fort is a focal point for local history rooted in Al Ain. This was where the Bani Yas tribe, from which many Emiratis today descend, first settled before moving to the coast in the late 1700s. During the hot summer months, many of them would retreat inland to cooler Al Ain while others stayed year-round to farm crops and livestock in the more fertile oasis environment. The Hili tombs were first discovered in the late 1950s by a Danish-led archaeological expedition. Visitors come from all over the UAE to explore this zoo, which not only boasts an enormous collection of exotic creatures but also occupies a beautiful location in the foothills of Jebel Hafeet. At the heart of A. Lange & Söhne’s philosophy is a mission set out by founder Ferdinand A Lange in the 1800s; to build the world’s finest watches. The story of the renowned brand is of an endeavour to reach new creative heights. “We strive to retain elements from the company’s past. For example, the three-quarter plate and the typical A. Lange & Söhne pocket watch design. We took these on board as we developed our wristwatches and we still do. Ferdinand had a vision to produce the world’s best wristwatches. We do things in quite a unique way, it is often a challenge to take a watchmaker from outside the company because he has to

unlearn and then relearn a lot of new methods. It goes as far as a simple thing such as the finger protection the watchmakers wear. We use German silver in our craft and it is very beautiful but the price you pay is that if you touch it or breathe on it, it will be very difficult to clean, hence the use of finger protection. For watchmakers, their fingers are their tools and if suddenly they have something covering their fingers, it is difficult to adjust,” explains Schmid. Looking to future launches, the innovative company is once again keen to retain the element of surprise. For now, the focus is the Lange 1 Moon Phase which, not only boasts a sleek design, but a continuous lunar disc movement, while the Tourbillon 1815 brings a revolutionary new degree of accuracy with a stop function on the tourbillon.

The 1815 Tourbillon is the first of its kind because not only can you stop the tourbillon, but the second hand jumps to zero if I pull the crown, which makes it easy to set the precise time. Jolie One of the first independent boutiques in Abu Dhabi, Jolie was opened by former model Gillian Haddad in 1992 with the aim of giving lesser known European designers their first springboard into the capital’s burgeoning shopping scene. Food for thought Despite the dry, arid conditions of the UAE, farming has been the lifeblood of local Bedouin and tribal communities for many centuries WORDS BY

Farming has never been easy in the UAE. Early settlers in the region faced a hostile environment, where little water and poor soil produced barely enough to live on. These days, the reliance on farming has shifted to food imports as, with a population of millions rather than thousands, produce is shipped in daily to meet demand. This includes a taste for culinary delicacies, which sees the world’s rarest and most coveted ingredients brought to the UAE. Royal beluga caviar, fois gras, kobe beef, truffles and oysters are all regular features on fine-dining menus in the capital’s five-star restaurants. Few pause to think, however, exactly how far these ingredients have travelled and how this has impacted the environment as well as the freshness and quality of the ingredients. Caviar from the Caspian Sea undergoes a 1,800-kilometre journey to get here, kobe beef has flown 7,700 kilometres from Japan and Sydney rock oysters have travelled 12,000 kilometres to make it to your plate in Abu Dhabi. As environmental concerns increase, focus is increasingly placed on determining which ingredients can be grown successfully in the UAE and how this fresh produce can be used to create stunning dishes at some of Abu Dhabi’s finest restaurants. More and more, hotels, chefs and diners are looking for locally produced and sustainable ingredients on the menu for a truly authentic taste of the Middle East. The Abu Dhabi Farmers’ Services Centre (ADFSC) works to change public perception about local agriculture. “What many people don’t realise is that Abu Dhabi has thousands of farms, many of which have been active for decades, says Chris Hirst, CEO of ADFSC. However, in the past, little of this made it to people’s tables because there wasn’t an efficient system in place to get the produce to the store. There was also a general public misconception that local produce was somehow inferior to that grown overseas.”

The ADFSC has created the Local Harvest brand to publicise and confirm sustainability from locally grown products. Not only does this ensure consistency of quality and availability, it also reassures the buyer that social sustainability is maintained by returning income from sales to the farmers and the community. A major issue for farmers here is of course water. In an effort to overcome this hurdle, ADFSC actively pursue agricultural projects that require less water, irrigate crops more efficiently and use water recycling measures to boost the amount of food production in the emirate. “Perhaps most promising are the changes being implemented by forwardthinking farmers passionate to do what they can to help the process along – most notably,

hydroponics, which can cut down on water use by as much as 80 percent,” says Hirst. By promoting effective techniques, using the right technology and educating farmers, the hope is that we will see more and more locally grown ingredients on menus and at home in years to come, he adds.

Choose wisely It’s not always the case that sourcing local produce means the food is sustainable, however. The well-documented over-fishing of hammour, a fish native to these shores, has seen many restaurants take the conscious decision to remove the endangered species from their menus. Once abundant in local waters, the breed is now struggling to keep its numbers up after being over-fished seven

times above the rate that would allow the stocks to naturally replenish. While there are still many restaurants serving hammour on their menus, some hotels, including Le Royal Méridien Abu Dhabi, are partnering with the Emirates Wildlife Society and World Wide Fund for Nature (EWS-WWF) to work towards maintaining precious marine resources through the Choose Wisely campaign. Leading the way in identifying and assuring sustainable seafood sourcing, Choose Wisely suggests local varieties of sea bream and snapper as alternatives to the dwindling hammour.

Abu Dhabi Gourmet Stars In an effort to publicise the importance of using sustainable and locally sourced ingredients, the prestigious Abu Dhabi Gourmet Stars Awards added two additional honours to its list of accolades this year. A new award for ‘best use of local ingredients by a chef’ went to Chef Nicolas Perz for his delicious creations in the kitchens of Hyatt Capital Gate Abu Dhabi, while another was awarded to Fairmont Bab al Bahr for ‘best sustainable practice.’ Chef Perz expressed hopes that winning the award will make the hotel’s partnerships with local suppliers more durable. Describing the Hyatt Food Philosophy as ‘Food. Thoughtfully sourced. Carefully served’, he said that the hotel utilises “sustainable goods from our local farmers and producers for all our current and future recipes”. Local vegetables and honey from a nearby organic farm can be found on the menu at signature restaurant 18 Degrees along with the

dish that won Chef Perz his award – Choose Wisely Halwayo fish wrapped in Kunafa dough, camel milk and sweet potato mash. Cladys Magagna, executive chef at Fairmont Bab Al Bahr was equally thrilled with the accolade, saying: “We are honoured to have been awarded ‘best sustainable practice’ by Gourmet Abu Dhabi and hope to continue to inspire industry-wide commitment in embracing sustainable development as a standard practice to help preserve our global and local environments and cultures.” Sustainable and local options have been added to menus throughout the hotel including the multi-award-winning Marco Pierre White Steakhouse & Grill and Frankie’s Italian Restaurant & Bar, as well as the all-day dining destination CuiScene. Sustainably sourced lamb, beetroot, cucumber, baking potato, onion, garlic, fresh local radiccio and local red plums are artfully crafted into mouth-watering dishes along with EWS-WWF fish sourced through the Choose Wisely campaign. Not only does this produce support local communities but, as Magagna points out: “Local foods always taste much fresher as they don’t have to travel long distances before arriving on your plate. Products that travel far are older and have often been frozen which diminishes the flavour. Additionally, food that is exported is systematically sprayed with insecticides and other chemicals to maintain colour and is often genetically modified. Local food, on the other hand, preserves genetic diversity so there is greater choice and consequently more flavours to choose from.”

Farm fresh With an increasing number of ways to source local and sustainable products, it’s not only restaurants that are making responsible food choices. The public has more access than ever before to local ingredients from farmers’ markets as well as supermarkets. The UAE organisation Ripe has been running weekly food and craft markets celebrating fresh, seasonal, local, organic produce since 2011. Visitors can browse the stalls and try samples of locally grown, organic fruit and veg or grab coffee and a slice of cake and enjoy the lively atmosphere. Held every Thursday at Jones Al Raha, Ripe also offers deliveries of boxed fruit, vegetables, eggs, milk, honey, nuts and eco-friendly home products. ADFSC is also increasing its operations to bring local products to the consumer market. Hirst explains that the organisation is “expanding our network of ADFSC souqs, which are geared toward products that have been raised, grown, manufactured or processed in the UAE. These stores will always have a wide selection of our Local Harvest products. Concierge explores the Middle Eastern culture of shisha smoking and uncovers the expertise required to prepare the perfect set-up

The shisha pipe has been an integral part of Middle Eastern culture for centuries and a popular ritual for those looking to relax, socialise or simply pass the time of day. Although there’s no dispute that it came from this part of the world, the exact origins of shisha remain under debate with Turkey, Egypt, Syria and Iran all laying claim to the initiation of this historic practice. Its widespread use in this region has given rise to many different names and, depending on the destination, it may variously be referred to as shisha, hookah, hubbly bubbly and narghile, among others. All, however, refer to the same Arabian practice of inhaling flavoured tobacco through a waterpipe.

Today, shisha smoking remains a hugely popular recreational activity in the UAE and those looking to try it out will find an abundance of shisha lounges and cafés across the capital. At Shangri-la Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, shisha supervisor Ali Ramadan is a mine of information on the intricacies of smoking and preparing a perfect pipe. It is a skill he first learnt as a child growing up in Egypt. “My father is fond of smoking shisha and when I was young I would watch him set up his equipment every afternoon. One day I took the liberty of doing it for him

and from then on I began to enjoy preparing the shisha for him myself,” he says. As Ramadan grew older he developed a deeper appreciation for the art. “I learned to cut different shapes for fresh fruits and mix the various tobacco flavours together to form a pleasing blend. I became passionate about experimenting and going beyond the basics of shisha preparation,” he adds. In order to further develop his skills Ramadan travelled to Abu Dhabi where he has been the resident shisha expert at Shangri-la Hotel, Qaryat Al

Beri for five years. He takes pride in his work and is consistently pushing the boundaries of creativity to discover new and interesting shisha concoctions. He can, for example, create a personalised shisha for special occasions such as birthdays or anniversaries. “We can cut the fruit in a novel way and include special greetings in honour of the occasion. People expect cakes and cards but a personalised shisha can be a nice change – it always gets a surprised smile and a ‘thank you’. We are happy to know that we delight guests by going that extra mile,” he adds.

Whether a beginner or a seasoned smoker, shisha smoking is a practised art and steps can be taken to maximise the experience. Hundreds of flavours are available and there are numerous types of pipes so choosing the right set-up is of utmost importance. Ramadan says: “I always advise beginners to try light flavours such as strawberry, melon or cherry while more experienced shisha smokers can opt for stronger varieties such as grape, mint or apple.” Each pipe, he continues, should be used consistently for a specific flavour as swapping between them will have a negative effect on the overall experience. In addition, coals should be changed every 10 minutes while water should be refreshed between each use and ice added to keep the smoke smooth. Although the UAE is a Muslim country, alcohol is permitted in several emirates including Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Wine, Champagne and spirits are available in most five-star hotels, but be warned, there is zero tolerance to drink-driving and being drunk in public is a crime, both punishable with a fine and, in more serious cases, imprisonment.

As a general rule, all hotels will add a 10 percent charge to restaurant bills in addition to the six percent fee levied by the government. Most menus state whether these taxes have already been incorporated or not but check with the waiter if it is unclear.

YAS MARINA CIRCUIT Home to the annual Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Yas Marina Circuit is one of the capital’s most famous sporting attractions. I’ve been a resident of Abu Dhabi since 2010. I love the city’s geographical location. I travel a lot for sailing events and I can get around the world quickly from here. For the majority of the year, the weather in this city is a huge attraction, especially for sports such as sailing. I also love the fact that so much goes on here. If I have visitors there’s always something happening, be it a golf championship, a tennis championship, a cultural festival or a food festival. I’m very much an outdoor person so I take advantage of any chance to play golf, go kite surfing, visit the beach, swim in the sea or cycle. My favourite hobby right now is kite surfing. Whenever there’s a shamal (northwesterly wind) it’s fantastic. I play a little bit of golf, too. I’ve played all the courses here and they’re all very different. Saadiyat Beach Golf Club is beautiful. The course at Abu Dhabi

Golf Club is great as well but I think Yas Links is the one I enjoyed the most, even though it was a tough course. If I have any spare time I like to spend it with my kids and they love Yas Waterworld. They also like the beach and they’ve been sailing at the Abu Dhabi Sailing & Yacht Club a few times now. We always have a good time out in the desert, too. They enjoy sliding down the sand dunes on the desert safari but I think I scared them to death while dune bashing. Abu Dhabi has changed a lot in the time I’ve been here. Recently, a great many restaurants have opened up. I like eating at the Eastern Mangroves Hotel & Spa by Anantara where you can also go canoeing in the mangroves. Thai is my favourite food and Pachaylen, the Thai restaurant there, is fantastic. There’s also Silk & Spice, a superb Thai restaurant in Sofitel Abu Dhabi Corniche.

When I have visitors I take them to Yas Island to one of the restaurants overlooking the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix track; I never tire of sitting out there. For a real treat I go to Cipriani or Hakkasan in Emirates Palace. First and foremost, however, visitors have to go to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. If you’ve got time to go into the desert then do that too as it’s obviously what the UAE is unique for. I think the single best thing that I’ve done here is a dhow race. I’m lucky because Abu Dhabi heritage is based around dhow sailing and pearl diving, which, as a sailor, suits me perfectly.
