A visit to Burj Khalifa is without doubt one of the best experiences to be had in Dubai and is a wonderful way to see the city. I would suggest going for dinner at At.mosphere, which is the world's highest restaurant. Choose a table next to the window and enjoy remarkable views. Exceptional vistas are also offered at Burj Al Arab. The hotel's Al Muntaha restaurant serves gourmet European fare, and its location on the 27th floor affords wonderful views across the Arabian Gulf and out towards Palm Jumeirah. For those looking to take advantage of Dubai's world famous shopping scene, I would recommend Fashion Avenue at The Dubai Mall. It is home to world renowned luxury brands and high-end boutiques. Otherwise, BurJuman Mall offers an exclusive shopping experience and includes Saks Fifth Avenue and Prada among its high-end shops. There is a host of exciting experiences to be had here and one of the best for thrill seekers is jumping out of a plane with Skydive Dubai, soaring above some of the city's most famous sights. The Heritage Village is a good place to connect to the city's past and there are exhibits which give an insight into early life in the emirate. Dubai Museum is also home to historic artefacts which tell the story of the emirate's pearl diving and fishing roots. After a busy day spent exploring Dubai, I recommend an evening meal at Pierchic seafood restaurant in Al Qasr, Madinat Jumeirah. Perched at the end of a pier jutting out into the Arabian Gulf, it is undoubtedly one of the city's best restaurants. The Parisian themed wine bar Cave, at Conrad Dubai, is also a wonderful space. It has the biggest selection of wine in the city which is accompanied by a modern take on a classic French menu. Our guests love it there.

Dubai Moving Image Museum An enchanting journey through the history of the moving image awaits at this charming museum. The pieces on display here have been painstakingly gathered from all corners of the globe by collector Akram Minas. Star quality Damas has witnessed a stellar rise from humble workshop to international jewellery empire Words by

Under large wooden panels protecting pedestrians from the sun’s rays runs a maze of narrow streets lined with a series of small shops where the windows seem to overflow with precious gems. Here, in the heart of Dubai’s historical gold souk,visitors soon discover why the UAE is renowned for gold as they embark on a journey back in time. This is where the story of Damas begins, as CEO Anan Fakhreddin recalls: “Damas was established in 1907 as a humble family workshop for the manufacture of silver jewellery, before moving on to gold. From the start, Damas was known for exceptional craftsmanship as the skills where passed through the family from one generation to the next.” Twenty years after opening its first store in the gold souk in 1959,Damas has become one of the biggest jewellery brands in the entire region − its network spanning 300 stores throughout the Gulf, across Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Despite its phenomenal growth, though, the UAE remains an important market for the brand. “This is our home and the birthplace of Damas,” says Fakhreddin. He adds: “The UAE has always been a regional hub for the gold trade and, in the last few years, it has strengthened its position as an international hub for jewellery, gold and diamonds, as the world’s biggest brands continue to set up regional headquarters in the country.”

“Today, the amount of re-exported gold and diamonds from Dubai to Europe and the Far East is valued at tens of billions of dollars, which is a huge percentage of the overall size of the world industry. Gold prices in the UAE are very competitive compared to the rest of the globe and when customers visit one of our stores, they can enjoy all these unique benefits,” says Fakhreddin. Already a major gold trade hub in the region, the UAE has also developed into an international retail destination in the last two decades. Fakhreddin adds: “In the 1980s, it was hard to convince foreign brands to set up shop in the Gulf as European markets thrived in the absence of major regional fashion capitals. Back then, the Gulf region didn’t have as many malls. When Damas managed to start a partnership with its first foreign jewellery brand, it was considered a real feat. “By inaugurating its Al Ghurair Mall store in the 1990s, Damas was the first local jewellery brand to have the courage to move out of the traditional setting of the gold souk, enter the modern mall and compete with global retail brands.” After this initial leap of faith, Damas continued to expand its network across many of the major malls, attracting some of the biggest international brands.

Indeed, Damas’ brand portfolio includes some of the most prestigious jewellery houses, from Graff, whose diamond creations have crowned kings and queens, to Fabergé’s exquisite egg-shaped masterpieces and Roberto Coin designs which are coveted by Hollywood’s biggest stars. Despite this impressive collection of foreign brands, Damas has made a name for itself creating hugely successful collections that have captured the essence of the UAE. From the launch of its first collection in 1988, Damas’ own brand portfolio has continued to grow over the past decade, numbering more than 10 popular brands today. Three years ago, Onesixeight was unveiled as an affordable diamond jewellery brand, while Orana’s stunning designs combine diamonds and high-quality South Sea pearls. More recently, Solana’s range of
beautiful yellow diamond gems, designed to be worn every day, has been met with equal enthusiasm. “The secret to Damas’ success was that it understood the nature of local society and the cultural importance of buying jewellery,” explains Fakhreddin. “It was present at every occasion, from engagement parties to weddings, graduation ceremonies or new births, until it formed an integral part of the city’s celebrations and of its social tapestry. “Customers come to Damas looking for modern, unusual designs. Indeed, innovation is a key characteristic of the brand and we always make sure we stay abreast of the latest design trends and adopt the most advanced techniques and manufacturing methods. In fact, the new product development unit constitutes one of the most important

Its eight experts work around the clock, watching out for the latest news in the design sphere from displays at international exhibitions, and releases by major design companies.” Keeping track of all the latest trends, Damas has noticed a tremendous change in customers’ needs and expectations, as Fakhreddin reveals: “The pace of change in the youth segment is phenomenal compared to traditional jewellery, which evolves at a much slower rate. This means we have to launch new collections every three weeks in that category, as opposed to every few months in the conservative segment. “One of the main trends we’ve noticed in 2015 is that, away from typical Arabinf luenced, single-coloured diamond necklaces, the country’s nature as a melting pot has inspired a brand new generation of jewellery aficionados who share a similar modern taste, regardless of their nationality and cultural background. prefer multi-coloured gold jewellery that is studded with unusual shades of diamonds such as blue, brown or pink.” As well as a keen eye for design in the industry, unmatched quality is the second most important factor in Damas’ success, as demonstrated by the establishment of the diamond division in 1995. Fakhreddin explains: “Damas has earned its customers’ trust, thanks to the quality of the raw materials it selects. An army of
experts exerts every possible effort behind the scenes to make sure that clients obtain the highest possible value for their investment. Here, each piece of gold, every diamond and gemstone, either supplied by international brands or by our own factories, is closely scrutinised to guarantee utmost clarity. Damas is proud of these high standards which are superior to not only many others in the market but even to the UAE’s legal requirements, which are considered among the most stringent in the world.” With the aim of strengthening its position as a market leader, Damas announced a development strategy in 2013 with a key focus on high-end jewellery. Fakhreddin says: “This reorientation is much more than just a catchy slogan. It constitutes a deep philosophy that ref lects in every aspect of our business. We have worked for months to establish clear and unified working guidelines and to redefine the company’s identity, from the design of our stores, to packaging, customer service and product quality. “We have also re-examined the brands available in each branch. These efforts are aimed at providing clients with the best possible experience in each and every one of our stores.”

Winding passageways and striking wind-tower architecture are hallmarks of an area that was vital to the birth of modern Dubai
Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood The city’s oldest quarter and perhaps its most intriguing, Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood stretches out from the bustling banks of Dubai Creek in Bur Dubai. Its winding passageways and striking wind-tower architecture are hallmarks of an area that was vital to the birth of modern Dubai. Here, traditional dhow boats were loaded with wares bound for exotic lands as the creek banks thronged with activity. The Bastak people
from Iran were among the first to settle in the area in the late 19th century, setting up home in the warren of streets surrounding the creek. Homes along the banks of the creek were first constructed from palm fronds but coral and sea stone homes were later favoured. The quaint winding lanes here are home to coral and limestone buildings topped with wind towers – an early form of air-conditioning where wind is funnelled down to cool the homes below.

With its intricate carvings, ornamented doors, gypsum panels and beautiful curved courtyard archways, the architectural features of Al Ahmadiya School are every bit as important as its historical significance. Spread over two storeys, the building housed the first public primary school in the emirate, taking in pupils in 1912. Founded by a wealthy pearl merchant, students would cross the creek on an abra to attend lessons at the school each day. One of its most renowned pupils was Dubai’s current ruler HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, although a host of important figures from the country’s past were also schooled here. Subjects included studies of the Qur’an, Arabic calligraphy, literature and astronomy. The school was fully functional until 1963 when it became too small to accommodate the number of students. In a bid to preserve its heritage, the building was restored in 1994 and opened as a museum 15 years ago. Visitors to the museum not only have the opportunity to see the architecture close-up, but can view classroom set ups and learn about life for some of the emirate’s first school children.

Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum House Sharing the eastern edge of Dubai Creek with Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood is the atmospheric Al Shindagha area where the ruling Al Maktoum family once lived. Labyrinthine streets are home to historic properties, mosques and the Diving Village which offers a glimpse into the life of those involved in the lucrative pearl trade. One of the most important buildings in this area is Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum House. Now a museum, this elegant home was the original residence of the ruling family and the former seat of government in Dubai. The structure dates back to 1896 and boasts a stunning outlook across the creek. The grand home serves as an example of the area’s traditional architecture, as well as a rich resource of Arabian history. Home to Sheikh Saeed bin Maktoum Al Maktoum, the grandfather of current Dubai ruler HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the building offers insights into life in the pre-oil era with a fascinating series of photographs of 1940s and ’50s Dubai, coins, stamps and a pearl diving display.

Al Fahidi Fort One of the oldest buildings in Dubai is the striking Al Fahidi Fort, built in 1799 to defend against attacks from the sea. The square-shaped structure was honed from coral and mortar and has three towers. Remnants of the city walls can still be seen on the southern side of the building while a majestic dhow boat stands at the centre of its large courtyard. There is also a good example of a traditional summer house known as an Arish and made entirely from woven palm fronds. This impressive structure has had several functions, including rulers’ residence, garrison and prison. In 1971, Al Fahidi Fort became home to Dubai Museum, where exhibits take visitors on a journey through the emirate’s rich history. From old weapons and pottery to musical instruments and pearl
diving artefacts, the displays are engaging. One of the most impressive is an exhibit of a complete grave from the Al Qusais archaeological site, thought to be between 3,000 and 4,000 years old.
Bur Dubai Grand Mosque Nestled between Dubai Museum and the textile souk, Bur Dubai Grand Mosque dates back to 1900. It is also one of the UAE’s largest mosques and is an excellent example of traditional Islamic architecture. The mosque’s primary function was as a school for students of the Qur’an. In 1998, it was rebuilt to include a 70-metre high minaret. The sand-hued walls blend well into the surrounding historical buildings and the entrance boasts five columns and 54 domes. Wooden windows frame the beautiful stained glass panels within.

Long before the discovery of oil, pearls were a source of wealth for the people of the United Arab Emirates. Pearl divers would sail for months at a time, working from sunrise to sunset, scouring the depths of the Arabian Gulf for the natural treasure. Pearls were sold on to European and Chinese markets during the Gulf’s boom from the mid-18 th century onwards but pearling in the UAE sadly died out in the early 1930s with the introduction of Japanese cultured pearls which changed the face of the industry. During the 18 th and early 19 th centuries, diving equipment was rudimentary and the practice was dangerous. Divers took to the waters with just a nose clip, or fetam, fashioned from goat or gazelle horns and simply held their breath as they searched for pearl oysters on the sea bed. The story of Dubai’s rise from the desert starts at its coastline. Before the discovery of oil changed the face of the emirate, fishing was the lifeblood of what was once a humble village on the shores of the Arabian Gulf. Early settlers from the Baniyas tribe owed their livelihoods to the fishing and pearl trades that the coastal location provided. While fishing is no longer as widely practised, many of the traditions connected to that simple way of life still feature today and a strong link to the bountiful Gulf is still felt. This is perhaps most apparent on the city’s dining scene where seafood restaurants have long been a mainstay. A slew of newcomers has added a fresh flavour to a vibrant culinary landscape. Beachside restaurant Sea Fu and trendy hot spot Catch are leading the charge, while established favourites such as Fish Market and the legendary Al Mahara still reign supreme. Al Mahara As one of the city’s most renowned seafood restaurants, Al Mahara presents a truly unique experience. Instantly recognisable from the entrance alone, guests pass under a golden archway to reach a grand restaurant positioned directly next to Burj Al Arab’s famous aquarium. The blue hue from the floor-to-ceiling tank washes over the restaurant, as all manner of sea life
swims just inches from diners. There are several dining experiences on offer. The most extravagant option is in a private room where guests are treated to a special six-course degustation menu. Some of the courses are prepared tableside by the chef de cuisine while a dedicated waiter and sommelier serve guests with premium bubbly, and a photographer captures picture-perfect memories in an unforgettable experience. Al Mahara, which means the oyster shell in Arabic, also offers extensive à la carte lunch and dinner menus, sharing specialities for two and a variety of tasting menus. Meanwhile, the popular Taste of Al Mahara menu takes diners on a journey through Europe, with delicious Loch Fyne Scottish salmon followed by steamed Maine lobster and gratinated clams, parsnip and lentil ‘du puy’ velouté, Atlantic wild turbot cooked in vine leaves and seared Angus beef on the ‘plancha’. Fish Market Fish Market is one of Dubai’s longest standing seafood restaurants. Since opening in 1989, its popularity has never waivered, which is testament to the quality of the cuisine on offer. The venue overlooks Dubai Creek and presents fresh seafood in a market-style setting laid out around the dining area, where freshly caught fish and crustaceans lie on a bed of ice and live crabs and Australian lobsters rest in seawater tanks. Select a lobster and have it cooked in a style of your choice, or choose a crab and enjoy it with rich black pepper sauce. Other specialities include tiger prawns in lemon butter garlic sauce and shaam in Thai red curry sauce, while tom yam kum soup with mushrooms, and seafood soup stand out among the appetisers. Catch Dubai Catch is an international seafood restaurant with a sharing dining style and modern culinary creations. The Dubai branch emulates the original New York venue with stylish industrial décor, while the menu reflects cultures from across the globe. A highlight is the tartare trio with salmon, hamachi, tuna, caviar and wasabi crème fraiche. Mains include crispy whole snapper and herb-roasted branzino (European seabass), plus there’s a good selection of meat options including Wagyu short rib

Sea Fu With a name derived from ‘sifu’, the Cantonese for ‘master’, Sea Fu prides itself on its cutting-edge culinary creations. Fresh fish is at the heart of the menu. From an open kitchen seen from the dining area, chefs prepare seafood delicacies according to two themes, Mediterranean and Far Eastern, cooked on an Asian-style grill. The restaurant has launched an innovative new menu for summer. Start off with poached langoustines with asparagus and Hollandaise yuzu sauce or yellowfin tuna with edamame purée and sesame oil. For mains, the grilled stone bass with baby vegetables and a saffron broth is an excellent option, while the forbidden rice is arguably the most intriguing. This signature dish combines rice, scallops, prawns, calamari, green asparagus, edamame and Cecina beef chips in one serving. Sea Fu is open for lunch and dinner. Menus differ depending on the time of day but the view remains just as spectacular.

I am Singaporean-Indian and have been living in Dubai for nine years. I love the city for many reasons and one of them is that it’s constantly growing and evolving. Many other cities and countries I’d lived in were already established, but in Dubai I have seen The Dubai Mall and the tallest tower in the world, Burj Khalifa, being built. I grew up in a variety of cities but, after living here for a long time, I call Dubai my home. The city has neverending opportunities and I find it extremely inspiring. So much so that my company, Madison De Fleur, is developing new designs and adapting them to the local culture with a twist of French heritage. My favourite time of year is Ramadan. It’s the only time I get to see so many of my friends and spend quality time with them and my family. Besides Ramadan festivities, the best annual event on the social calendar is the IWC Gala at the Dubai International Film
Festival. They know how to throw a fabulous party and the crème de crème of Dubai society attends. I like to dine at Celebr ities at One&One Royal Mirage, where my favourite dish is veal tenderloin with mushroom sauce. I also like 101 at One&Only The Palm, which has the best paella in town. La Petite Maison in DIFC is also an excellent restaurant, I have a sweet tooth and you can never go wrong with their cheesecake. My preferred bar is Jetty Lounge, also at One&Only Royal Mirage. I love to watch the sunset there. When I have friends and family out to stay, the first place I take them to is Burj Khalifa, followed by a desert safari. This is something everyone needs to experience when they come to Dubai. I also recommend visiting Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi. I have never seen such a beautiful and peaceful building and the architecture is amazing.
