Arabic sweets

Indulge in a sweet treat and choose from the mouthwatering specialities from across the region that are widely available during Ramadan, at the sunset iftar meal. Dates are a popular sweet course, often eaten to break the fast and used in imaginative desserts such as date cheesecake. Another traditional Emirati dessert to try is khabeesah. Usually served at special occasions, it is made from roasted flour, cashew nuts, ghee and milk. Its unique flavours include saffron, sugar, cardamom and a hint of rose water.

There is a wealth of fascinating attractions to take in during a stay in Dubai and, for me, a must-see is Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. Here in the city’s oldest quarter, visitors can opt for a ride across Dubai Creek on a traditional boat known as an abra. Dubai Museum can also be found here and offers a valuable exploration of the emirate’s past. Also in this area is Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding where guests can try a traditional lunch or breakfast, hosted by an Emirati who is on hand to answer questions on local life. Dubai is known the world over as a premier shopping destination and there is nowhere better for a retail fix than The Dubai Mall. It really has everything under one roof from international brands to cinemas, restaurants and even an aquarium. Take a break from shopping and enjoy a cup of coffee at Souk Al Bahar, a modern bazaar located just outside the mall. Try some traditional Arabic coffee here at one of the many charming spots such as Bateel Café which has a very nice Saudi blend best tried with a side of dates. While here, visit The Dubai Fountain and Burj Khalifa. Both can be accessed from the mall and make for a spectacular sight. For a truly memorable experience, I suggest a trip out to the desert. A host of companies can arrange this and sunset is an ideal time to go. The magnificent space is really quite spectacular, especially when looking up to the sky as the stars begin to sparkle. The photographic opportunities, among the striking sand dunes, are endless. To end a busy day in Dubai, Cave at Conrad Dubai is an elegant destination to unwind. The French cuisine offered allows diners to experience a number of regionally inspired dishes, from the Alps to the Burgundy region and on towards Paris, the home of urban bistro cooking. Tasteful design and soft lighting creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar and a sacred time observed by Muslims worldwide by fasting and prayer. Fasting begins each day at sunrise and ends at sunset. As a sense of religious observance is felt throughout Dubai, a whole range of festivities and events inspired by the values of the holy month are presented. Ramadan tents brightly lit by traditional lanterns provide the opportunity to attend gatherings and discover more about local customs and culture. Evenings during Ramadan are a special time when family and friends come together to break the fast and enjoy an iftar meal. Arabic perfume Attars are a spicy variety of perfume specific to the region. Derived from natural plant oils, they are highly concentrated and often sold in decorated crystal bottles or decanters. Looking inwards For Muslims the world over, Ramadan is a special time when thoughts of the faithful turn to religious observance. Fasting takes place during daylight hours and is not only an important pillar of Islam, but serves to quiet the mind in preparation for meditation. As serene spaces designed to nurture peaceful moments, mosques boast beautiful examples of calligraphic art. Bright colours highlight painted ceilings while hand-woven Persian carpets adorn floors. Inside the Jaeger-LeCoultre Manufacture, an entire wall is dedicated to the amazing accomplishments that have come from its artisans since its doors opened. Each piece on display is more innovative than the last and the wall of calibres, as it is known, is intended to inspire the creative teams within the Manufacture, spurring them on to even greater watchmaking heights. This is a place where innovation is found at every turn and where watchmakers have in some cases dedicated their entire working lives to the intricate craft and to preserving the legacy of a company which was founded by one passionate artisan toiling in his workshop more than 180 years ago. “Inside the Manufacture, people are very proud of the products – that is something you can feel,” says Daniel Riedo, CEO Jaeger-LeCoultre. “There is no compromise on quality. There are 180 skills present and for that reason we open the doors regularly receiving 3,000 visitors every year. It is important for us to share the passion of all the watchmakers and employees. We are an integrated operation and that means we produce everything. Our artisans stay with us and progress inside the Manufacture, from the very simple movements to the complicated pieces. Our focus is very much on developing our people.”

The luxury Swiss watch brand’s reputation for innovation means there is a steady supply of watchmakers keen to join the Manufacture. Riedo says: “There are many ways in which we find our artisans. Some come to us because we are very well-known but, we also take people from school and they learn a lot inside the Manufacture. “We have one person whose previous job was as a lumberjack. He cut down trees in the forest and now he sets very small stones. He was interested in working with us so we gave him some tests and employed him. Since then, we have developed his skills and now he works in the artisan field, having come from the forest. I believe, when it comes to artistic work, that there is no real school for it. At the end, there is only people.” He adds: “Some have worked with us for a long time; one watchmaker is about to leave after 49 years. He started at the age of 15 and is retiring just before he turns 65. We have another retired watchmaker who is 75 years old and has been with the company since he left school. He still works for the research and development department a few days a week, even though he has been retired for 15 years.” A commitment to artisanal roots is at the heart of the Jaeger-LeCoultre story. Founder Antoine LeCoultre studied metallurgy in his family’s forge with his father where he invented new alloys. A gifted inventor, he created the Millionometer in 1844, the first instrument able to measure the micron – one-millionth

“We have to think about the connection between mentor and protegé and the ways in which we can transmit knowledge from generation to generation” of a metre or one-thousandth of a millimetre. In 1847, LeCoultre’s pivoting winding device was the first system for winding the watch and setting its time without the use of a key. A succession of firsts followed as did hundreds of global patents. In 1888, seven years after the death of Antoine LeCoultre, records show his son Elie carried on the pioneering work with around 500 watchmakers and technicians. From the 1890s onwards the Manufacture began producing a series of Grandes Complications – incredibly intricate timepieces that were to become a hallmark. In 1903, French watchmaker Edmond Jaeger joined forces with Antoine’s grandson Jacques-David LeCoultre and a world-famous partnership was born. The pair collaborated on one of the first collections of ultra-thin watches that included the thinnest watch in the world. Building on the decades of success that followed, the Jaeger-LeCoultre brand was formed in 1937. Just as early expertise was handed down from generation to generation within the company, talent is still carefully nurtured within the Manufacture. Based in the Swiss Vallée de Joux, an expert team of 1,800 people works within its walls where more than 1,200 different calibres and over 400 patents have been filed since the brand’s beginning. A host of legendary timepieces have made their mark on the watchmaking industry including the Reverso, Duoplan, Memovox and Atmos clock, while the Calibre 101 in 1929 remains the world’s smallest mechanical watch movement.

“It is great for the younger watchmakers coming through and part of their education. We try to transmit from one generation to another. It is more complicated today than it was in the past as we have more people and we have developed the Manufacture dramatically in the past five years. We have to think about the connection between mentor and protegé and the ways in which we can transmit knowledge from generation to generation,” says Riedo. He adds: “We have the wall of calibres which displays only half of what we have produced over the years but is a fantastic place to find inspiration. There are more than 120 people working just on the development of new ideas. Often I am asked about the most difficult part of the creative process and my answer is that the greatest challenge is to reduce the number of ideas as there are so many that it is difficult to select one and not another.”

With each year that passes, the innovations continue and, since 2000, the Manufacture has created 75 new calibres, including grand complications, tourbillons, minute repeaters, chronographs and perpetual calendars. Earlier this year the impressive Master Ultra Thin Minute Repeater Flying Tourbillon watch was launched, the 11th in the Hybris Mechanica collection and the first ultra-thin grand complication model. One of the slimmest minute repeaters in its category, at just 7.9 milimetres, the piece is based on eight separate patents, six of which are entirely new. Hybris Mechanica 11 is equipped with an original tourbillon, high-performance new

balance-spring and automatic winding system as well as a new minute repeater. “As the first minute repeater to be ultraslim, it is something really astonishing and is a milestone in the development of high complications. It is very wearable but also has high-end complications because of our capacity to produce ultra-slim components for high-end pieces. This idea is at the heart of the Hybris Mechanica collection,” says Riedo. He continues: “We also have the Hybris Artistica, a unique collection of just 12 models at the high-end in terms of the artistic developments that we are capable of. These two pillars are the pinnacle of mechanical and artistic creativity within our business.” The collections are supported by some of the brand’s most iconic lines, such as the Atmos and Reverso, which are continually updated and reinvented in special editions. First presented in 1928, the prototype of the Atmos clock caused a stir among the world’s media as it appeared to achieve perpetual motion. Drawing its energy from the smallest changes in temperature, a one-degree fluctuation is enough to drive it for two days, while the clock consumes 60 million times less energy than a 15-watt electric light bulb.

Its stunning design means it is as impressive today as it was 85 years ago and a number of special editions in recent years have ensured its continued popularity. Meanwhile, 1931 marked the birth of the Reverso watch. During a trip to India a distributor of Jaeger-LeCoultre was challenged by polo enthusiasts to create a watch capable of withstanding hard knocks sustained during the game. The idea heralded the birth of the Reverso, which in one quick motion sees the case swivel in its carrier to protect the watch glass as the back of the dial is instead turned to face outwards. “The Reverso was developed in 1931 for polo play, to protect the glass itself during the game. Now this idea has evolved into watches for ladies, two time zones, plus an opportunity to personalise the watch with engraving. There is almost no limit to the imagination. That is part of the creativity of what we love to show to customers and, for that reason, Reverso is a very big icon of the brand.” Looking to the future, Riedo says: “This is a great place to expand in the UAE and in the wider Middle East region, but it’s not expansion for expansion sake. It’s a qualitative expansion. For sure, there is potential here. “We hope to continue to grow as a company and to continue to foster the direct connection we have with our customers. That is something we are very focused on. We have so much to offer with the Manufacture and the passion that can be felt there; that is something we want to share with others. We have great movements and watches but it is very important to us that people come to understand something more of the dream of the watch itself.”

Reigning supreme The world’s oldest jewellery house, Garrard and its creations take pride of place in the collections of royals

Sought after by some of history’s most prominent monarchs, Garrard’s striking pieces have been crafted for queens, princesses and noble families the world over for centuries. From Princess Diana’s blue sapphire and diamond engagement ring to extravagant tiaras in the House of Windsor’s royal collection, many of Garrard’s pieces have attained international acclaim. However, there is more to the company than bespoke regal commissions. Over the past decade, Garrard has extended its reach to develop beautiful jewellery lines that are available to purchase in boutiques. Recently, luxury jewellery and watch retailer Damas brought the illustrious brand to Dubai stores for the first time. Concierge speaks to Garrard CEO Eric Deardorff on the company’s rich heritage and the extraordinary craftsmanship of its artisans.

The Garrard success story began in the 1700s when the f ledgling company was already crafting opulent tiaras and sceptres for the British royal family. The brand’s reputation for qualitative craftsmanship quickly garnered worldwide acclaim which in turn saw its customer base rapidly expand to include European royal families, tsars of Russia, sultans, Chinese emperors and emperors of Japan. “Garrard has had the honour of working with royalty all around the world and to this day we still design and make an incredible range of pieces for various royal family members across the globe. Garrard pieces have always been viewed as beautiful contemporary designs for the times and revered for the incredible craftsmanship in the making of whatever the piece is; whether it’s jewellery, decorations and metalwork or trophies,” says Deardorff. While the brand’s initial roots lie in the creation of silverware, it has for many decades been primarily devoted to the production of jewellery and high jewellery. The brand’s first commission for the British royal family was for Frederick, Prince of Wales, in 1735. Deardorff explains that the company’s initial link with the royals was in

part due to the conveniently based location of its original London headquarters, paired with the brand’s already excellent reputation for creating fine silverware. Thanks to the success of the first commission and many others which followed, Queen Victoria appointed Garrard to the position of Crown Jewellers in 1843. The brand continues to serve the House of Windsor, among many other monarchies, to this day. During the 1800s and 1900s, Garrard crafted pieces for queens from almost every monarchy in Europe. “We’ve made a significant number of crowns. Some of the most majestic tiaras seen over the centuries were made by us and are still worn by

royals today. When you see queens around the world wearing a tiara that is 50, 100 or 150 years old then there’s a good chance Garrard made it,” says Deardorff. While many commissions have remained private, others have played a part in history. In 1905, Garrard was requested to take the British monarch’s Sceptre with the Cross – created for King Edward VII’s coronation in 1902 – and insert into its head the largest diamond ever found; the Cullinan 1. This striking diamond, also known as the Great Star of Africa, boasts more than 530 carats and the piece is now on display in pride of place at the Jewel House in the Tower of London. More recently, when Prince William proposed to Catherine Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, he presented her with a blue sapphire engagement ring. This ring bears special significance as it was the same piece Garrard crafted for Princess Diana when Charles, Prince of Wales, proposed to her at Windsor Castle in 1981. As a result of the exceptional quality and craftsmanship of each piece, it is not uncommon for classic Garrard creations to be rotated and brought out to be worn during special

occasions such as coronations and other monarchical ceremonies. “A couple of weeks ago, the Duchess of Cambridge wore a tiara that Garrard made in the 1800s for an evening event. Three queens and two princesses have worn that tiara so far, that I’m aware of,” says Deardorff. Renowned pieces such as those worn by world-famous royals have cemented Garrard’s regal status and secured the brand’s place in the history books for decades to come. However, royals are not the brand’s only customers. Just over a decade ago Garrard unveiled its first consumer collection of necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings entitled Wings. The line, inspired by angels, celebrated the company’s 10th anniversary last year with a special limited edition in a more contemporary style than the original collection in order to appeal to a modern clientele. Besides Wings, there are two other key jewellery collections: Entanglement, inspired by the motif of the Cambridge Lover’s Knot tiara made for Queen Mary of England in the early 1900s and Tudor Rose, featuring floral motifs taken from a traditional emblem from the Tudor dynasty. Every year the brand adds a new piece to each collection with options in rose gold, white gold and yellow gold. Prices range from US$4,000 (AED15,000) to US$250,000 (AED918,000). In the UAE, Damas plans to release one new collection annually. Garrard also offers beautiful high jewellery sets for the more discerning customer, wedding collections and bespoke jewellery suites that can be flown around the globe for potential buyers to select from.

No matter the style of the piece, quality reigns supreme when it comes to materials. Deardorff explains that 98 percent of each piece is made up of precious stones, including diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds, with pearls occasionally added depending on the design. “The belief that buyers have in us is critical and this is in part because we use very top-quality gems. For example, we source diamonds from all over the world. Russian diamonds are beautiful and, of course, there’s South African. We pick them out from auctions and they all go through The Kimberly Process, which is a system to ensure the stones have come from conflictfree areas,” explains Deardorff.

As well as the choice of materials, the craftsmanship poured into each piece is of vital importance. The jewellery is created in London where Garrard’s team of artisans is led by head designer Sarah Prentice. Speaking of the inspirations behind the latest Tudor Rose collection, Prentice says: “I felt the new collection needed a floral element but I also wanted to tie into the Britishness of the brand. Our three principles are Britishness, heritage and craftsmanship, so hopefully I’ve incorporated all three of these into the collection.” As well as upholding the brand’s ideologies, Prentice is also charged with bringing the notion of transformable tiaras back in vogue. Traditionally, tiaras were designed so they could be dismantled and also worn as jewellery pieces. Reflecting the idea in modern collections, Prentice has created a series of necklaces and tiaras that can be easily separated into cuffs, earrings and brooches, injecting versatility into each piece. In its forward-thinking designs and ambitious plans, Garrard clearly has an eye on the future. In recent years, the innovative brand has grown its presence to an additional 10 countries in less than three years, utilising the strengths of local partners. The company’s partner in the UAE, Damas, launched the brand at The Dubai Mall earlier this year and is set to build on that success and launch in Abu Dhabi later in the year upon the opening of Yas Mall. A testament to its incredible legacy, Garrard’s continued global growth echoes the brand’s beginnings, from humble silversmith to supplier of crown jewels to royal families around the world.

Symbols of faith Complex patterns and exquisite Arabesque designs paint a beautiful picture of Muslim beliefs in works by Islamic artists across the centuries

The star is a common motif in this part of the world. The familiar symbol features prominently in the art and architecture of the region, visible on the walls, floors and ceilings of Middle Eastern buildings, woven into the carpets, etched into the ornaments and celebrated in paintings. It is one of many shapes that recur in works by Muslim artists who, for centuries, have captured the tenets of their faith in patterns and symbols that represent different threads of Islamic belief. During Ramadan, the religious significance of these shapes becomes more apparent as people dedicate additional time to prayer, pausing to reflect and strengthen their commitment to the core values that underpin their faith.

“Throughout the holy month, visual forms of expression, such as calligraphy or geometric patterning, convey the universal message of peace and harmony that is at the heart of the faith” says HE Hoda Al Khamis-Kanoo, founder of the Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation (ADMAF). The eight-point star, known to Muslims as the khatem, encapsulates many of the underlying principles that inform the Islamic understanding of the universe, representing, in its symmetrical design, the order and harmony of creation. As such, the star reappears often, woven into the decorative fabric of the country, visible everywhere once you start to look for it.

Alongside the khatem are various other shapes that recur in Islamic designs. The pentagon, octagon and circle crop up time and time again, piled into complex patterns that, in their repetition, celebrate the infinite nature of Allah and his creation. Islamic teaching emphasises the inimitable perfection of his work. As a result, any effort on the part of man to attempt to enshrine this in a form of his own making is considered, 4

at the very least, futile. This idea of a flawless creator who can’t be mirrored is at the heart of all Islamic belief, reiterated through the rejection of all idolatrous practices. As such, the representation of Allah in figurative form is strictly prohibited, as are depictions of the Prophet Mohammed and his family. Traditionally, the Islamic aversion towards iconography extends to the depiction of all living beings. The artistic rendition of animal form could be seen as an attempt to imitate the creator and, because of this, animals and people feature a lot less prominently than might be expected in works by Muslim artists across the centuries, though different branches of Islam have exhibited varying degrees of compliance towards this principle over time. Instead, Islamic artists have focused on conveying Allah through Arabesque shapes and geometric patterns, often combining the two styles to create beautiful and complex designs. These patterns are acceptable because they honour rather than imitate and there’s no attempt at direct representation. “Islamic art generally comprises stylised lines and designs in highly disciplined forms. It is often woven or inlaid on precious materials that are

decorative as well as useful, though the emphasis is always on celebrating creation,” says Manzoor Kachroo, sales director at Miraj Islamic Art Centre. This does not, however, extend to the portrayal of plant life, which is widely represented in Islamic art. Arabesque, a style widely associated with art of the Islamic world, is characterised by flowing depictions of leafy plants and flowers, though typically there has been little attempt at realism and designs have historically tended towards loose representations of general foliage rather than one flower in particular. Though frowned upon by some schools, most Muslims today find the use of floral motifs in art perfectly acceptable and plantinspired designs have adorned buildings and art works since the earliest days of Islam. One of the most beautiful modernday examples is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, where the distinctive décor is characterised by flamboyant

flowers covering the vast central courtyard and columns surrounding it. The theme is continued inside the building on the walls and carpets of the prayer halls and in the beautiful stained-glass doors and windows. Here the flowers openly depict particular species found around the world. This, in fact, is a key feature of the design, which feeds into the larger ethos behind the mosque – a desire on the part of its founder, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the late President of the UAE, to promote cross-cultural harmony and understanding. As such, flowers from the southern hemisphere are found over the South entrance to the building and Northern-hemisphere botanicals adorn the North face, gesturing towards the cosmopolitan spirit the mosque celebrates. “In many ways, Islamic expression is the embodiment of multi-culturalism as it was built on a foundation made from many civilisations and cultures united in a creative cultural dialogue based on tolerance,”

This universal approach has its roots in the Islamic Golden Age, a time when the proliferation of learning in the east was drawing people from all over the world to the enormous empire being amassed by Muslim leaders. Many of the artistic traditions and techniques that have characterised Middle Eastern art across the centuries hail from this Golden Age of Islam, which fell from the mid-seventh century to the mid-13th century. Drawing on the knowledge of the countries they invaded, the Arab conquerors sought to absorb the learning of their new lands into their own font of knowledge. People came from far afield to participate in the culture of

education that was establishing the Muslim world as the intellectual centre of science, mathematics, philosophy, medicine and other schools of study. Alongside academic spheres, creative pursuits also witnessed a renaissance and Islamic art began to emerge as a field in its own right, characterised by the huge diversity of influences feeding it. This, in part, accounts for the breadth of styles and subjects that fall under the banner of Islamic art today. Calligraphy, painting, glasswork, ceramics and textiles are some, but by no means all, of the mediums that came to the fore during this period and have become areas of focus for Middle

Considered the most superior of the Islamic art forms, calligraphy is visible everywhere across the Muslim world, on buildings, ornaments, clothing and every other surface imaginable. It is as old as Islam itself and revered as the medium through which the Qur’an was set down and given visual form. Eastern artists over the centuries. Today, this multicultural inf luence is evident in works by Muslim artists as they draw on their cultural past to create modern designs. “The techniques and styles of those who lived centuries before us continue to provide a rich source of inspiration for artists living and working today. Both ancient and contemporary expressions of Islamic art must be preserved, nurtured and upheld as we move forward into the future,” Ms Khamis-Kanoo says. This is the role ADMAF performs, acting as both “a guardian of the past and an incubator for contemporary expression.” Ms Khamis-Kanoo cites numerous exhibitions the foundation has hosted over the years that have offered visitors and residents an opportunity to engage with Islamic culture

through the medium of art. Most recently, the foundation has established a partnership with the Prince’s School of Traditional Arts, an organisation run under the patronage of HRH The Prince of Wales, that specialises in teaching, researching and promoting the practice and theory of the world’s great artistic traditions. “Together we have introduced hundreds of young people in the schools and universities of the UAE capital to Islamic art so that they may continue to understand, cherish and safeguard its artistic heritage,” she adds. In Dubai, Mirage Islamic Art Centre is one of several institutions that carries out this role. “Besides being a museum and gallery, Miraj is also an educational institution where people from all over the world learn about the art, culture and heritage of Islam. The centre was set up primarily to showcase art from Islamic-influenced cultures and countries but it also works to support present-day artists and craftsmen who need patronage to sustain their artistic endeavours,” says Kachroo. Support networks like these are at the heart of the UAE’s mission to create a global platform for local and regional artistic talent. As the country develops its reputation on the international art scene, bolstered by the success of home-grown annual art fairs such as Art Dubai and Abu Dhabi Art, the presence of high-profile auction houses, Christie’s and Sotheby’s and the evergrowing number of local galleries opening their doors, interest is growing in the artistic culture and traditions that underpin it all.

I am originally from Lebanon but have lived in Dubai for the past 14 years. As a place that is growing by the minute, with new projects happening all the time, Dubai is an exciting city to be part of. Where else can you witness such achievements and live it as it develops? Dubai is also a safe city, which makes a big difference when you have children. I work all week and attend a lot of art and fashion events due to the fields I work in, so the weekend is my time to relax and spend time with my sons at home, at the pool and the beach. We go to the movies and watch the boys playing soccer or we like to eat out. La Petite Maison, the French restaurant at Dubai International Financial Centre is my favourite. The ambience is friendly, the staff are top notch and every meal is just delicious. If I had to pick one dish it would be the burrata. Zuma is my second favourite as the cuisine is consistently good, especially the seared wagyu beef. I love to go and discover new things and walk outdoors. XVA Gallery, in Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, is a beautiful

place with an amazing menu and great pieces of art in its gallery. Dubai offers a lot when it comes to events; from the Fashion Forward shows and the exhibits that luxury brands such as Chanel often organise, to the Dubai International Jazz Festival and a huge variety of concerts. You name it, we have it. Plenty of events also take place at galleries throughout the year. Gate Village at DIFC, Alserkal Avenue in Al Quoz and Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood are all great places for talks and artist visits. I especially love March because of Art Dubai and Design Days Dubai; annual events that attract designers, galleries and artists to the city. When I have visitors in town, I recommend the gold souk and Dubai Creek for a journey across the water on a traditional boat. Dubai has inf luenced my career and I feel I have grown alongside the city. The sky is the limit here and the energy is special. Since starting my brand Bil Arabi in 2006, it seems as though it has been riding on the waves of the cityâ€™s incredible journey.
