Dubai has been developing very fast over the past decade, and has become a major visitor destination for both leisure and business. For those in town to shop, I recommend The Dubai Mall. The world’s largest shopping mall is home to just about every major fashion brand under one roof. Elsewhere in the city, at Mall of the Emirates, you will find an incredible selection of stores with diverse of wares from designer brands and accessories, to furniture, electronics, and everything in between. For a glimpse of Dubai's history, and to learn about the UAE's culture and heritage, I recommend visiting Dubai's oldest quarter, Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. There is a number of fascinating attractions including Dubai Museum, Heritage and Diving Village, Sheikh Mohamed Centre for Cultural Understanding, the souks and of course, the enchanting Dubai Creek. In the evening, Pierchic is one of the most romantic restaurants in town. Located at Al Qasr Hotel, Madinat Jumeirah, it offers outstanding views of Burj Al Arab and the Arabian Gulf. For another amazing vista, I recommend going to At the Top, the observation deck in the tallest building in the world, Burj Khalifa. Helidubai also offers another incredible way to see the city on a helicopter tour. Explore Dubai to the fullest and discover its majestic scenery from above. Take the iconic tour and enjoy the bird’s eye views of Palm Jumeirah, the World Islands, Burj Al Arab, Burj Khalifa and a host of other architectural wonders. Dubai is continuously evolving and lots of construction and infrastructure projects are taking place across the emirate. The city is so multi-cultural that it can, and will, provide for literally every culture.

Dressing appropriately is an important courtesy during the month of Ramadan. Long dresses and chic cover-ups are the best way to be respectful yet stay on-trend. A legendary tale The House of Fabergé is returning to its roots, reviving the historic tradition of crafting magnificent objets d’art

There are some brands that are so iconic that mere whispers of reinvention are immediately met with disbelief. The luxury jewellery House of Fabergé is one of them, and yet, that’s exactly what President Robert Benvenuto has set into motion this year by unveiling exclusive objets d’art. The story of Fabergé began in 1842 in St Petersburg in Russia when Peter Carl Fabergé, born in 1846, was apprenticed as a boy to his goldsmith father Gustav Fabergé. The revered name survived the fall of the Russian dynasty and was revived in 2009 with the launch of stunning high-jewellery lines. Now, Benvenuto wants the world to know Fabergé is writing a brand new chapter in its remarkable history. After a hiatus of nearly 100 years, the House is honouring its heritage by once again crafting the precious Imperial Class eggs that made Fabergé legendary.

After his apprenticeship, Peter Carl continued his goldsmith studies in Paris, Germany and England before returning to Russia to join the family business. Extraordinary detail and a vibrant colour palette became hallmarks of Peter Carl’s craft and he soon caught the attention of the Russian Imperial Court. The House of Fabergé became known, under Peter Carl’s direction, as an artist-jeweller of some note and by 1885, Tsar Alexander III gave Fabergé the title ‘Goldsmith by Special Appointment to the Imperial Crown’. Peter Carl flourished in the role, creating exquisite jewels and ‘objets’, including the legendary series of lavish Imperial Easter Eggs.

The opulence surrounding the Russian royalty came crashing down in 1917 when the Russian Revolution brought about the end of the Romanov dynasty and with it, the House of Fabergé. Peter Carl Fabergé and his family fled Russia on the last diplomatic train bound for Riga, Latvia, where he lived out his days in Switzerland. In a legal settlement in 1951, the Fabergé family lost the right to produce and market designs under the Fabergé name and it wasn’t until 2007 that the family was reconnected with the iconic title. Tatiana Fabergé and Sarah Fabergé, both great-granddaughters of Peter Carl, became founding members of

the Fabergé Heritage Council, which offers advice to the new company. Fabergé was then finally relaunched in September 2009. “The company was dormant for almost 100 years, yet the name is revered around the world. From a business perspective, the company is almost like a start-up. We have the opportunity to put our fingerprint on the next chapter, understanding the past and not forgetting it, but rather reinterpreting it,” says Fabergé president and chief operating officer Robert Benvenuto. “Fabergé is the artist’s jeweller who paints with precious colour gem stones. Our palette has rubies, sapphires and emeralds from which we’re looking to create these personal pieces of art. The aim is to position Fabergé at the top of the luxury good pyramid in terms of aspiration,” explains Benvenuto. While Peter Carl made over 200,000 items, from pieces of jewellery to intricate stone carvings, it’s the 50 Imperial Eggs he crafted that continue to fuel the legend of Fabergé. In a landmark launch at Baselworld 2015, the first egg created in the Imperial Class after nearly a century was proudly unveiled, cementing Fabergé’s return to tradition. For the design, Fabergé collaborated with the Qatari-based Al Fardan family, renowned pearl collectors, for the new Fabergé Pearl Egg that draws inspiration from the formation of a pearl within an oyster. The egg’s mother-of-pearl exterior

opens to reveal a unique grey pearl of 12.17 carats, sourced from the Arabian Gulf. In total, it boasts 139 fine pearls from the private collection of Hussain Ibrahim Al Fardan as well as 3,305 diamonds, carved rock crystal and mother of pearl set on white and yellow gold. Benvenuto explains: “The last time an Imperial Egg or a general objet was manufactured was in 1916 and was delivered the following year to the Czar in Russia.

There’s been a hiatus for 99 years and we’re coming back with it now. These objets are highly, highly limited. “We have the credibility and the history. We want to lead with a product that we can own and can’t be duplicated. Objets are also what we’re getting requests for on a private, bespoke level. Fabergé reflects the art of colour and the art of gifting. Now that art of gifting has turned into the art of collecting and these objets are the crème de la crème.” During Baselworld, the House of Fabergé also showcased high-jewellery collections featuring exceptional coloured gemstones, Secret Garden and Summer in Provence, as well as elegant updates to its Heritage, Treillage, Charms and Rococo lines. “If we look at the precious colour gems marketplace, it’s very fragmented and there is no leader. We feel like this is a market that we want to own. One of the key points for us is that our parent company, Gemfields, is the largest publically traded precious colour gem mining company in the world. They own sapphire, ruby and emerald mines and there’s the opportunity to reach them right from the source,” says Benvenuto.

Peter Carl Fabergé also created timepieces and, drawing on his legacy, the House has revealed four watch collections – Lady Fabergé, Lady Compliquée, Summer in Provence and Visionnaire I. Mirroring the same craftsmanship Peter Carl was famed for, there’s a focus on visual richness with enchanting colours and an interplay of various patterns. In the Lady Compliquée Peacock, for example, a peacock made from sculpted and engraved gold fans out its tail on the hour over a subdial of turquoise tourmalines, green tsavorites and sparkling diamonds. It’s an exciting time for the House of Fabergé, says Benvenuto: “I do not know any other hard goods luxury company in the world – and I’ve been in this industry for 30 years – that has the same degree of unexploited global growth potential as Fabergé. It’s an evolution, not a revolution and the book hasn’t even begun to be written on this next chapter.”

The event, which closed its fifth series on April 13, is at the forefront of Dubai’s burgeoning fashion scene where the creativity of local designers is driving a flourishing new industry. The city is throwing its weight behind home-grown talent and building up a dynamic local fashion scene with initatives like Fashion Forward and the new Dubai Design District. For Sara Al Madani, Dubai is an obvious choice for upcoming designers looking to launch their careers in fashion. “This city is cosmopolitan and glamorous with consumers that appreciate fashion and love spending. This makes it ideal for big fashion names looking to start their own projects here. It’s also a great launchpad for Emirati designers at the start of their careers,” she says. “It is down to the individual designer to work hard. The Emirates will launch you, but it’s your own efforts that will take you places,” she adds. Al Madani is no stranger to hard work. The Emirati entrepreneur set up her label, Rouge Couture in 2001 and now has three outlets across the UAE. She is known for her pioneering abaya designs, which fuse traditional styles with modern Western fashion. Over the years she’s seen the city’s designers glide out of obscurity and onto the international catwalk to carve a place for UAE fashion overseas.

Names like Fatema Fardan, who became the first Emirati designer to present at New York Fashion Week in February, and Sheikha Madiyah Al Sharqi, the first Emirati designer to be stocked by online store Moda Operandi. Then there are designers such as Rafia Helal Bin Drai, founder of high-end abaya label Mauzan, and Lamya Abedin, the selftaught designer and mastermind behind well-known brand Queen of Spades. Like Sara Al Madani, these designers specialise in contemporary abayas, creating beautiful, avant-garde pieces that bring the traditional dress form into the 21st century. “These days the abaya is no longer seen as just the national dress of the UAE; it has been raised onto the international fashion podium,” explains Abedin. “I have seen this first hand as my own creations have been worn by a long and varied list of reputed fashionistas from royals and VIPs of our region to international

celebrities like designer Tory Burch and Egyptian actress Nabila Ebeid,” she adds. A first-port-of-call for shoppers and fashion enthusiasts looking to learn more about Dubai designers is internet retail giant Not just A Label (NJAL). The London-based online boutique has joined forces with d3, Dubai’s prestigious new design district and recently hosted its first ever pop-up boutique at the Meet d3 launch event. A platform for emerging design talent, with over 18,000 names on its books, NJAL is

described by its founder and CEO Stefan Siegel as: “A gateway to a global community of independent, emerging talent.” The portal is playing a key role in the new design district, which is part of a major drive to develop Dubai’s fashion industry and open up new avenues for aspiring designers looking to make a name for themselves on the local and international scene. “NJAL will work directly with designers, institutions and d3 to ensure that emerging designers have the right climate to grow commercially, but also artistically. If Dubai wants to offer something unique in terms of fashion design, it has to nurture its own talent while embracing and attracting designers from outside the UAE and beyond,” Siegel says. For designers, d3 will be an invaluable resource as they look to develop their reputation in the field and exhibit their talent to a local and overseas audience. “D3 will create a platform that promotes the designers locally, regionally and internationally,” explains Emirati designer and founder of fashion label Bint Thani, Khulood Thani, gesturing towards the Meet d3 launch event where she was part of a team that presented the first ever 3D printed dress in Dubai.

Already the new district hums with people as designers, artists, models, stylists, and boutique managers who make up Dubai’s burgeoning fashion community go about their business, meeting and collaborating on exciting projects. A quick glance around illustrates the diversity of Dubai’s fashion scene. As local designer Fatema Fardan points out: “Dubai has an extremely eclectic fashion scene that makes it very different from any other part of the world. It embodies the

multicultural and diverse aspects of its environment. It is both modern and traditional as well as eastern and western.” Fardan, a UAE national who graduated from Regents University in London with a first-class degree in fashion, design and marketing before returning to the UAE, is the creative director and owner of her own label, Fatema Fardan designs. For her, it’s the freshness and youth of the Dubai fashion scene that makes it so appealing. “London, Paris, New York and Milan are very saturated. Here in Dubai, there is room for a designer to be present and communicate his or her philosophy to the world,” she says, praising the novelty and creativity of local output. “The rising fashion scene of the UAE has created individuals with unique outlooks and new perspectives on contemporary fashion. Fashion has meaning and it helps individuals to communicate, in a non-verbal way, their values, morals and ethics. Dubai’s fashion scene is a reflection of itself and the role that we designers have is to help facilitate people in expressing their individuality. Emirati designers in my opinion are doing a great job by projecting their own voice in the Middle Eastern market,” she says, adding: “We might not be ready to compete on an international level just yet but when we are, we will be a force to be reckoned with.”

There is an interesting evolution taking place on Dubai’s shopping scene. Having long been famed for its world-class malls and renowned fashion brands, room is now being made for the bijou, the unique and the quirky as a new breed of shopper seeks out a more artisanal approach. Breathing new life into the city’s retail scene is a slew of districts where independent boutiques, niche brands and up-and-coming designers flourish. BoxPark on Al Wasl Road is the most recent addition boasting distinctive stores housed in shipping containers. With its edgy, urban environment and unique retail selection, the space is already gathering an avid following. Elsewhere, CityWalk brings together an intriguing range of fashion boutiques and brands from across the globe in a boulevardstyle setting, while The Beach mall, at Jumeirah Beach Residences, is a leisure hub with a difference where an eclectic mix of stores sits alongside diverse culinary concepts. The Zoo Concept The Zoo Concept breathes fresh life into the local retail scene. Urbanist There’s a unique urban style developing in Dubai, coming from a merging of western, eastern and Middle Eastern cultures. Sandra Hakim drew on this as inspiration when she launched Urbanist with husband Amjad. “Urbanist seamlessly merges the contemporary with the traditional, re-imagining the concept of typical mainstream stores and injecting an air of Middle Eastern creativity and charm, and an edgier array of products,” she says. The quirky boutique was developed to complement the typical 8

mall shopping experience while offering shoppers a sanctuary away from the crowds. Describing the Urbanist experience as “avant-garde”, Hakin explains that the team brings together a selection of international brands and sought-after labels not readily available in the emirate. “Our focus is not on stocking exclusive brands, it is about carefully curating the brands that we stock so that the selection is different to what you will find elsewhere. Interestingly though, we are the only current stockists of Marni for men in Dubai. We also stock an exclusive Lebanese brand called Waw that creates kaftans with a contemporary kick. As a young city, Dubai presents an ever-evolving landscape that is defined by new ideas and innovation. Much like in New York or London over the decades, the metamorphosis of Dubai and its people is reflected most in the cultural scene. As the city grows, so too does a vibrant artistic community which comes together to chart the transformation and, in doing so, forms part of the fabric of local life. While the capital has carved out a niche as a destination for a more traditional cultural outlook, Dubai is fast becoming known for a scene that is both bold and edgy. Leading the charge is cultural enclave Alserkal Avenue, which has this year undergone a major extension programme. The result is the creation of an artistic district that offers a fascinating space for visitors to explore, while at the same time, gives a home to an outstanding array of regional and international talent.

Following in the footsteps of the industrial art districts of New York, London and Tokyo, Alserkal has grown up from Dubai’s Al Quoz district where warehouses and the shells of construction yards have given rise to a warren of galleries, art studios and trendy cafés. The area, established in 2007, is the brainchild of local arts patron Abdelmonem Bin Eisa Alserkal who saw the need for a dedicated cultural centre amid the city’s rising towers and attractions. Within a year of opening, Ayyam Art Centre was the first gallery to open its doors at the Avenue which has gone from strength to strength. Born and raised in Dubai, Alserkal’s passion for the arts came from his family, he says: “I acquired my appreciation for the arts from my father, who is a collector

and a world traveller. This is what encouraged my personal interest in the field from an early age. “I went to pursue my higher education in the United States and that was my first exposure to the international art scene. I later developed my interest through various travels across the globe where I discovered the industrial areas that have become imperative to the cultural landscapes of many cities, such as Shoreditch in London and the Meatpacking district in New York.

“At the time there were already a couple of galleries open in Al Quoz and we encouraged that natural growth as I thought, why should Dubai not have a cultural area?” After years of nurturing the area, Alserkal is now one of the emirate’s most prominent cultural spaces. At its heart is an impressive collection of contemporary art galleries – amongst other creative businesses – which have garnered success both locally and internationally. Green Art Gallery and the renowned Gallery Isabelle van den Eynde were the first two galleries in the Gulf to participate in Switzerland’s Art Basel. Salsali Private Museum is a progressive space where engaging exhibitions are held while The Fridge is an edgy venue for performing arts and music. In addition to the cultural spaces, a brilliant roster of events takes place each year at Alserkal, the highlight of which is Galleries Night. Held regularly during the cooler

months, the neighbourhood comes alive as galleries throw open their doors for an evening of exhibitions, musical performances and art talks. Another successful event held at the Avenue is Urban Market where arts, crafts and music come together. “We grew together with the arts scene of the UAE, further developing the cultural landscape of Dubai through continuous partnerships and collaborations with organisations locally and regionally, such as Art Dubai, Dubai Arts and Culture Authority and others,” says Alserkal. He adds: “We have developed organically since then, and in the past six years, have attracted more creative and community spaces. Now we are expanding to welcome more experimental, independent homegrown concepts and to extend our platform to nurture locally based talent and enable them to share their work and ideas with a wider audience.” This year, the Avenue’s US$14 million expansion has doubled its size and opens up a host of new possibilities. As well as attracting prominent regional and international galleries, new creative areas include a black box theatre, independent cinema, artists’ studios and an outdoor performance venue. In total, 15 new art galleries, cultural

organisations and creative businesses are set to join the hub by the autumn. A major focus will be on nurturing homegrown initiatives through artist residencies, exhibitions, performances, a radio project, film and talks. Contemporary art remains at the heart of the Avenue with major international galleries making their regional debut. Leila Heller Gallery, New York, will exhibit an extensive programme of contemporary Western and Middle Eastern artists, while the Jean-Paul Najar Foundation from Paris has partnered with Alserkal Avenue to present European and American

post-minimal works from the 1960s to the 1990s. Also making a move to the Avenue is renowned local gallery The Third Line, Dubai, representing an array of Middle Eastern contemporary artists. Performing arts will be given a platform at new community black-box theatre The Junction - a pared-back space to highlight the purest aspects of the art form. Design will also be represented by Geneva/Taipei featuring kinetic art and limited-edition design while Nostalgia Classic Cars will pay homage to vintage car design. The latest gastronomic talents will also have a place at the Avenue with artisanal street food from Good Vibes Market and healthy smoothie bar Wild and the Moon. More announcements are expected in the coming months as the space cements its status as one of the region’s most important cultural hubs. My Dubai Art gallery owner Ghada Kunash shares her city highlights

I am Circassian by origin and was born in Jordan where I lived all my life until I moved to the UAE in 1997. I like living in Dubai because of the year-round sunshine, the safety and cleanliness, and the easygoing lifestyle. Dubai is a new city, and as a result, needs input from all spheres in terms of creativity and new ideas. It is growing continuously and that means there are plenty of opportunities to be part of that evolution. Like a blank canvas, every new space that is created, whether indoors or outdoors, needs to be designed, decorated and furnished. The best season on the social calendar for me is March as that’s when all of the art fairs take place, including Art Dubai, Sikka and Design Days Dubai. The Emirates Airline Dubai Jazz Festival is held in around this time, in February, which makes for a great combination. When art, design and music come together it is for me particularly inspirational. On weekends, I love visiting Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, the city’s oldest quarter. The textile and spice markets are a short walk from here, as is Dubai Creek

which is an exceptional experience. For a more contemporary flavour, it is just as nice to walk around the galleries at the city’s art hubs in Dubai International Financial Centre and Al Quoz. When the weather is good, I enjoy eating out at BiCE Sky Bar at Hilton Jumeirah Beach Resort. The view is great and the Italian cuisine served there is delicious – the bresaola is a particular favourite of mine. They also have a great pianist who sings beautifully and adds to the atmosphere. When it comes to shopping, I like Mall of the Emirates. There is an incredible variety of shops yet the mall is still a manageable size. If I’m missing home I like to spend time at Vindemia, my antiques gallery in Jumeirah Beach Residence. It is my sanctuary and a lovely space to immerse in art and culture. I have so many wonderful memories from my time in Dubai and it has been amazing to watch the city grow. I was here when Burj Al Arab was built and I have seen almost all of the important projects in the city take shape. Both of my children grew up in Dubai, and I have great memories watching them grow up here that I will always cherish.
