The Al Gaffal Traditional 60-Foot Dhow Race is one of the greatest sailing events on the annual calendar. Each year over 100 traditional wooden dhow boats and their teams take part in the competition to sail 65 kilometres from Sir Bu Nair island to Dubai International Marine Club. Dubai has made its mark on the world stage with astounding accomplishments such as the world’s tallest building, the largest manmade island, the richest horse race and the largest shopping mall on the globe. The city’s enormous growth and innovative approach has made it stand out in the crowd. I highly recommend taking a private helicopter tour to see it all. Flying over the different areas of the city from old town in Deira to Downtown Dubai and the sandy beaches in Jumeriah and on to Palm Jumeirah is an amazing experience. To get a taste of history, head away from the skyscrapers to Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood where you'll get a glimpse of traditional architecture through historical courtyard houses with wind towers. Visit Dubai Heritage Museum and Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum House – the former home of the grandfather of the present ruler that dates back to the late 1800s and has been restored to its former glory. A visit to the spice souk is another essential activity and offers visitors a chance to browse the different spices from the ancient trade routes. A cruise on the nearby Dubai Creek on a traditional abra (wooden boat) is the perfect way to unwind and view the city from a different perspective. In the evening, I recommend visitors enjoy refreshing mocktails and canapés at Sky View Bar at the Burj Al Arab, followed by dinner at the world’s highest restaurant, At. mosphere at Burj Khalifa. A night at Palm Jumeirah also makes for stunning photograph opportunities. A desert safari in the middle of the golden sand dunes gives visitors a true taste of Arabic culture. A drive though the dunes is followed by a traditional dinner, interactive experiences such as henna tattoos and camel riding, and traditional performances such as belly dancing and tanoura.

New York state of mind New York City’s Meatpacking District is renowned for its culinary scene. The latest restaurant to make it across the ocean to Dubai is Catch, a contemporary American seafood establishment with an energetic atmosphere and industrial décor. Highlights from the menu include the signature crispy whole snapper and classic sushi rolls with a special Catch twist. When: Daily, 6pm to 2am. Where: Fairmont Dubai, Sheikh Zayed Road. Any notion of modern Dubai calls to mind an array of world-famous attractions and the clusters of futuristic towers that define the city. Dubai is known for its grand malls and luxury brands but look a little closer and you’ll find a burgeoning shopping scene at the city’s modern souks. Bridging past and present, the chic spaces offer the opportunity to browse myriad wares in a setting that blends the best of Dubai’s traditional trading and its contemporary commerce. Historically, Middle Eastern civilisations shopped at open-air market places, known as souks, buying all manner of wares from passing merchants who set up caravans in areas just outside the cities. As time went by and these cities grew, the marketplaces became more permanent and shifted to urban locations, becoming meeting hubs for the entire community. This idea comes to life nowadays in modern bazaars. Popular with visitors and residents alike, they bring together a wealth of retail, dining and entertainment options under one roof. Concierge explores three of the city’s most vibrant modern souks to discover their unique charm.

Khan Murjan Souk

Nestled beneath Dubai’s iconic Wafi pyramid, rests one of the city’s best-kept secrets, Khan Murjan Souk. Set over two levels directly underneath the designer boutiques of Wafi Mall, the souk is a haven of Arabian shopping. Travelling down the escalator from the bright mall above is like entering another world. Modern storefronts are replaced with Middle Eastern architecture, wooden walkways and inviting boutiques.

Arabic lamps line the corridors while a beautiful multicoloured glass mosaic shines from above. The subterranean souk is split into four quarters – Egyptian, Syrian, Turkish and Moroccan – and meandering corridors are lined with vendors displaying clothing and accessories, jewellery, arts and crafts, carpets, collectables and household items from all corners of the Arab world. The thriving market is the perfect place to pick up a special souvenir. Visit the craftspeople who work in the souk and exhibit their art

At Golden Pen, for example, Iranian calligrapher Amir Hossein creates bespoke sketches and engravings on a range of materials including wood, shell, metal, parchment and leather. Take a break from shopping with a visit to Khan Murjan Restaurant. Set in an open-air courtyard, the traditional Arabic cuisine is a culinary must for visitors. Souk Al Bahar Situated in the heart of Downtown Dubai, Souk Al Bahar is the ultimate example of the past meeting the present. The name means ‘market of the sailor’ in Arabic and the lively bazaar combines modern luxury with traditional architecture. While it may be known for its opulent restaurants facing The Dubai Fountain, there’s also a thriving shopping scene here. The lower level of the duplex venue is full of boutiques and stalls, many of which follow an Arabian theme. Shoppers can browse locally made handicrafts, select a new outfit or piece of jewellery, sample perfumes, peruse books and even buy home furnishings. Natural stone corridors with high archways lit by Arabic lanterns provide a picture-perfect backdrop to an authentic Arabian shopping trip. A treat for all the senses, tempting scents float through the bazaar from delicatessens and sweet shops, contrasting beautifully with the spices and oils offered by vendors.

Shining bright Stephen Webster’s distinctive creations herald a new era in fine-jewellery design

In just a few decades, Stephen Webster has carved out a formidable place at the forefront of jewellery design. Having made his mark on the British industry with inspired collections, Webster has gone on to garner much international acclaim. From London roots, Webster has branched out with boutiques all over the world where innovative creations have attracted an A-list clientele. At the heart of Webster’s signature style is his ability to draw on an eclectic pool of influences, from art and fashion to the natural world. Bold, avant-garde designs are the result and have become something of a hallmark during a career that has seen Webster go from budding fashion designer to sought-after jeweller. “I was a teenage boy and I just wanted to do something creative. I was at art school to be a fashion designer and that didn’t work out but that was where I discovered jewellery existed. I don’t think I even thought about jewellery before that. I still remember the first piece I ever made, which was a Victorian ring,” says Webster. He began his career as a 16-year-old apprentice at the workbenches of London’s famed jewellery district Hatton Garden. From there, Webster embarked on a facinating journey that has seen him learn from the industry’s elite and rub shoulders with fashion royalty along the way. Webster’s first brush with the A-list came early on in his career, in the late 1980s when cinematic icon Elizabeth Taylor become a fan. The star was taken by a rose gold ring engraved with flowers and set with a lavenderhued chalcedony, and soon began commissioning Webster’s pieces. From there, the high-profile clients flooded in with Goldie Hawn and Madonna among the stars showing interest in Webster’s work. “My jewellery has definitely got a bit of an edge to it. For me it feels luxurious and feels well made – I’m a craftsman myself. Sometimes it’s a bit provocative for jewellery but I think people find a signature in it,” Webster explains. Other celebrities such as Kate Moss, Jennifer Lopez, Cameron

Diaz and Sienna Miller also became avid fans of his avant-garde and contemporary design references, and international acclaim followed. “There was a period that changed things in my life about 18 years ago, when people who weren’t interested in jewellery started becoming interested. Magazines wanted to find out who jewellery designers were and before I knew it, I was dealing with celebrities like Madonna who was already a big star. “There are obviously major stars now too, but it was a bit of a different time back then. I think the impact then was greater. I recently sold a ring to Beyoncé and instantly it went out on her social media and it got 365,000 likes, but I don’t know what that did. When Madonna was pictured in a magazine or newspaper wearing one of my cocktail rings, there would be a huge impact and people would want that ring. Tory Burch and her friends wanted one; everyone wanted one.”

During the early stages of his career, as Webster experimented with different aspects of jewellery creation, gems held particular appeal and he began cutting stones himself. “Usually, the way it works in jewellery, is that you design first with the metal and then the gems fit into it, but I started to design the cut of gems to fit into the metal so it gave the pieces a very different look. I’ve been doing that for 20 years, and at the time, that really wasn’t very common. People who were traditionalists wouldn’t have accepted that in jewellery, claiming stones need to be cut in a specific way, but now it’s just normal to experiment,” Webster explains.

Changing times As time passed, Webster was careful to ensure his collections evolved in line with changing trends and approaches. One of the biggest industry shifts saw a move towards women buying jewellery for themselves.

Webster says: “Once women buy jewellery for themselves, they wear it in a more fashionable way, compared to men buying it for women. That’s shifted jewellery. A lot of people will say not for the better, but I think otherwise because if you want to come up with creative jewellery, you need demand and I think women generate that themselves. It’s a more exciting space now, rather than it being just about prestige.” The other significant change in jewellery design has seen a more dynamic industry develop to nurture new talent. “Nowadays, there are more opportunities for someone who wants to be like I was

20 years ago - to experiment and try something new. There is a lot more competition - I don’t think when I was starting out there were as many designer jewellers as there are now because jewellery wasn’t as fashionable,” says Webster. He adds: “I was looking for where I belonged in jewellery and that was quite difficult because there weren’t jewellery outlets like we have now, when we think about places like Levant Jewellery at The Dubai Mall. Jewellery environments were very traditional. Even though I came from a traditional kind of background, I didn’t want to be traditional and that was quite tough as I had to go out and connect to a client myself. I had to go find them.” Defined by bold and edgy designs, one of Webster’s most popular collections to date remains the aquatically themed Jewels Verne, a tongue-in-cheek reference to the French novelist’s classic Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea. “My jewellery is often a conversation piece. In 2010, I launched a limited-edition collection The Seven Deadly Sins in rings. It’s quite difficult to depict gluttony in a ring but I did it and I sold them all. That collection was a fun kind of provocative,” Webster explains. “When I first designed the pieces people were a bit unsure about rings like a crab, lobster and jellyfish, but the crab ring became my best selling ring for three years. design a crab ring and think it’s going to be a success. You can’t wear that ring and not want to talk about it, much more than if you wore just a big emerald or diamond. “That may be the perfect example of when we get it right, it’s a bit of fun, it’s a bit provocative, it’s got everything in it that I want it to be and it’s worked,” he says. The jeweller is now sought after the world over, and has built up a strong following in the Middle East, where he has even designed tailor-made pieces for royalty. He says: “Dubai is exciting and full of energy, I have created pieces for the royal family who are looking for something a little different in jewellery. “I tried to find what might work in the Middle East and it’s interesting to see what people buy here. I think the region has had another burst of excitement in the last couple of years and it’s good to be here.”

A family affair

Bahrain-based jewellery brand Al Zain boasts a rich history spanning four generations

Pearls have been valued as objects of beauty for many centuries. Created naturally within the flesh of oysters found at sea, the precious gems are a statement of wealth and glamour and, as such, are commonly found in the jewellery collections of the world’s elite. The Middle East has enjoyed a long history of finding and trading pearls. In the early 1900s, fishermen of the Gulf’s coastal emirates free-dived the depths to reach the pearls, which were then traded around the world. While this practice is obsolete today, the precious gems continue to be used in jewellery making, a tradition kept alive through Gulf-based brands such as Al Zain Jewellery. Noora Al Zain, Head of Creative, Al Zain Jewellery, says: “The pearl was the start of our story, our lineage. During the days when Bahrain’s trade scene relied mostly on farming, fishing and pearl diving, the family’s forefather, the late Hassan Al Zain, was a famed tawash (pearl merchant), in 1930. Hassan’s son, Abdulla inherited a great love for pearls.” Abdulla’s passion and entrepreneurial spirit led the two men to combine pearl trading with jewellery making – a relatively new idea at the

time. The operation was so successful that they began trading with Europe and Lebanon and, in the 1950s, father and son embarked on an international expansion plan, which began with the opening of the first Al Zain Jewellery store outside Bahrain in Saudi Arabia. In the mid-1970s, Abdulla’s son Nabeel took over the business and the first Al Zain workshop was opened. The employment of four craftsmen quickly turned into 10 and today the company employs in excess of 150 artisans. Nabeel’s wife Samar Algosaibi, who is certified in gemology, also joined Al Zain where she is heavily involved in jewellery design. The pair were later joined by their children Mohammed, Faisal and Noora, who manage much of the business. By keeping the company within the family for four generations, Al Zain has been able to develop and maintain its own identity. “Our relationships represent the corner stone of our mission. We work together as a family to continuously create jewellery of the highest

Over the past few decades, archaeologists have unearthed a wealth of ruins and artefacts that have given historians priceless information on the regionâ€™s heritage. From a Christian monastery dating to the sixth century to the tombs of early settlers that unveil the religious traditions of the Hafeet tribe, the emirates are scattered with remnants of times past. Al Bidya Mosque Al Bidya Mosque in Fujairah is the UAEâ€™s oldest mosque but much of its history is a mystery. Experts estimate it was built around 1446 as a place of worship for the ancient Al Bidya people, of whom, again, little is known. The mosque is unique in design, masking its heritage even further. The sandcoloured structure, constructed from stone and mud bricks, features four pointed domes with cylindrical tips supported by an internal pillar but, unusually, no minarets. The interior is cave-like with small alcoves and

windows to encourage air flow. Despite its age, the original minbar (pulpit where the imam leads service) and mihrab (Makkah direction indicator) are still intact. In 2003, the mosque was designated as a historical place of interest and restoration began. Apart from a few upgrades, such as air conditioning and lighting, the mosque remains exactly as it was before. To this day, Al Bidya Mosque is fully functional and worshippers from the local area frequent the mosque to pray. Visitors are welcome to enter after the close of midday prayers.

Jebel Hafeet Tombs During the early Bronze Age, the plain below Jebel Hafeet mountain in Al Ain was home to the Hafeet people. The civilisation was largely made up of farmers but as it sat on a caravan route, influences from international travellers such as the Mesopotamians and the ancient Egyptians seeped into local culture. Religious rituals spread throughout the UAE, giving way to pagan Arab beliefs. One of these was the belief that the sun was a god. As such, when people passed away, they were buried under stone tombs that bared a tiny opening to let light in, or as they believed, to allow the sun god to visit their graves so they could come back to life after death. Many of these tombs, dating back around 5,000 years, can still be found. The largest is almost four metres high with a two-metre wide space inside. Identifiable by their round roofs, the tombs are valuable reminders of times past. They contained skeletal remains and artefacts such as pieces of pottery from the Mesopotamia era, arrowheads and beads. Bronze items were also found, suggesting the tombs were re-used during the Iron Era. In 2011, the site was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site but visitors can still travel to the tombs and enter the small spaces to see them from the inside.

Al Hili Archaeological Park In the 1960s, archaeologists began excavating the village of Al Hili in Al Ain and what they found changed notions of ancient life in the emirate. A whole settlement of towers, houses and tombs was unearthed across 10 hectares of land. A close look at the circular towers found there provides particularly significant insight. The structures, thought to have been built to protect trade routes, were constructed as a stronghold around a well with rooms in the outer walls and lie

near a collection of mud brick houses from the Iron Age. One of the greatest findings was the falaj water irrigation system. The oldest of its kind in the UAE, its presence exhibits the great engineering skills of the early settlers. Evidence of the copper industry was also found through artefacts left behind. Elsewhere on the site, now named Al Hili Archaeological Park, a number of ancient burial chambers were uncovered, including the Great Hili Tomb, a large stone tomb measuring eight metres in diameter.

Off the coast of Abu Dhabi lies an island with a great conservation project and an even greater history. Sir Bani Yas Island is home to one of the most significant archeological finds in the Gulf; a monastery dating back to the late sixth century. It was built by Christians who based themselves on the island due to its strategic location for Gulf pearl trade around the region. However, it was abandoned by the last few monks in 750ACE. It remains the only early Christian site in the UAE. Looking more closely at the complex, the evidence of a separate visitorâ€™s room suggests that as well as locals, a lot of visitors, thought to be travelling pilgrims, visited the church. The discovery of pottery and trinkets from as far afield as Iraq and India support this theory. Further archaeological digs revealed that the monastery was built on top of a grave of the person who is thought to be the settlementâ€™s founder. Visitors can explore the site during Sir Bani Yas Island nature and wildlife walks organised by Anantara Desert Islands Resort & Spa.

Dhow building The historic vessels hold the key to a large part of the UAE’s heritage and identity

WORLD RECORD One of the very last dhow-building masters, Ahmad bin Obaid Bin Juma Bin Suloom, is embarking on an ambitious venture to build the biggest wooden cargo ship in history, with a capacity of 4,500 tonnes. The project’s engineers, who are working at Jaddaf port in Dubai, will resort to traditional building techniques based on experience and intuition. Once complete, the vessel will be named Fazza after the nickname of Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai.

For centuries, traditional wooden boats known as dhows brought back fresh fish to feed the local tribes that made a home along the coast. Over time, these early settlements became thriving ports and dhows were used to carry a variety of local wares across oceans to India, China and East Africa. In summer, dhows carried courageous divers out to the Gulf’s oyster banks where they searched the sea’s dark floor for precious pearls. Nowadays dhows are used less and less out of necessity but construction continues to this day at Obaid Bin Juma Bin Suloom, a shipyard on the banks of Dubai Creek. Here, local builders have spent many years learning the craft that was handed down through generations. The dhow construction process begins with the stem and stern posts, followed by the rough unfinished hull planks, usually made from teak and held in place with supporting ribs or templates. The internal reinforcing framework is introduced once the hull nears completion. Hundreds of holes are hand-drilled to avoid splitting the wood and long thin nails swathed in oiled fibre secure the planks to the frames. It is an intricate job with beautiful results. Dhows in progress can be seen through the gates of the shipyard, while a few completed vessels continue to sail Dubai Creek. Next to the Old Souk visitors can find a number of trading dhows that continue to be used to this day. Enrico Malingri di Bagnolo is famous for having sailed around the world with his father and his uncle from the age of six, crossing over 120,000 miles and surviving nine hurricanes. Today, the sailor has found his way to the shores of Ras Al Khaimah, where he imparts his knowledge and know-how to the students of the RAK Sailing Academy as its founder and CEO. Concierge spends some time with Malingri di Bagnolo aboard the sailing vessel, the Lutra 30. “The UAE is blessed with perfect sailing conditions such as an ideal wind speed for racing or relaxed sailing and plenty of choice for open and closed water sessions, which makes it a great place to learn,” enthuses Malingri di Bagnolo. “The enclosed lagoon of the Al Hamra Marina in Ras Al Khaimah, fenced off by the breakwater on one side and Marjan Island on the other, makes for a very safe learning environment.”

“Racing is a tactical game. It is not only about physical strength but more about intellectual dexterity. You have to know how to position your boat and to make the most of the wind. It also requires good teamwork, as eight different people each take on a task they have mastered. In order to sail successfully in competitions, two experienced sailors are on board to deal with critical situations. Perfect synchronisation is key. The more mistakes made, the more time is spent correcting them and the longer the delay,” Malingri di Bagnolo explains. Every now and then, aspiring sailors also get to put their racing skills into practice, thanks to popular regattas organised by the RAK Sailing Academy. The latest, held in association with the Ras Al Khaimah Sailing Association, saw around 14 boats compete in the harbour’s waters.

“We plan to organise similar regattas every couple of weeks. We will also be participating in races in Dubai and other parts of the UAE more regularly. Events like these are important in order to help spread the word about the academy and its mission,” says Malingri di Bagnolo. It might take some time but a sailing culture is gradually gaining strong traction again in the UAE, thanks in part to new role models in the sport. The first professional Emirati sailor, Adil Khalid, is one of the stars of the Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing team

in the latest edition of the Volvo Ocean Race, the world’s biggest offshore sailing contest. Leading the way for aspiring sailors in the country, the talented Emirati was also the first Arab to compete in the Olympic Games when he made it to Beijing in 2008. He already has his eyes set on a medal at the 2016 Olympics. Hopefully Khalid’s achievements will inspire more young UAE nationals to follow suit, helping Malingri di Bagnolo realise his dream of forming an Olympic all-Emirati sailing team sooner rather than later.

I’m American with a Latin twist, born in the Republic of Panama and raised in California. I have been a part of the UAE community for almost two years and there are many things about living in Dubai that I love. Number one would be the culture of this young nation. The privilege to be able to explore the emirates and the region is a once-ina-lifetime-experience for me. Dubai is a huge melting pot and I’ve never been surrounded by so many different nationalities and cultures. I have learned a lot, not only about the people I’ve met, but about myself as well. This city breathes inspiration. How can you not be inspired by a city that has built itself? As an interior designer, Dubai has inspired me in many ways and at many levels. A number of the rooms that my company Ethan Allen showcases are a tribute to the local Emirati culture, through traditional majlis, for example. My favourite time in the UAE is winter. I love being able to go outside and walk along the boulevard and

enjoy the beautiful weather. There is a huge range of restaurants and cafés in Downtown Dubai so I love to call up a friend and grab something to eat or have a coffee and sit outside while enjoying the views of Burj Khalifa. When it comes to restaurants, Toro Toro at Grosvenor House Dubai is like my home. I love the delicious Spanish cuisine. Each dish takes me back to my roots through Spanish spices and the chef’s homemade touch. My favourite dish has to be the Spanish rice. Shopping is a part of my job because I have to shop for my clients’ homes and design their living spaces. When I shop I always go to The Dubai Mall. I frequently visit stores such as Adolfo Dominguez, Zara, Ted Baker and H&M but I customise most of my wardrobe. I purchase all my textiles here locally with my tailor. My inspiration comes from the different cultures here and seeing what is trending and upcoming in fashion. For visiting friends and family I would recommend going to the beach,

if the weather allows. I also would suggest The Dubai Mall for a shopping trip, especially with all the attractions the venue has under one roof. For an adventure, I love the desert so I would recommend a desert safari. When my family visits me, I love taking them to waterparks where they can enjoy the rides and attractions. Another area of Dubai that I love is Old Town, where you can find all the fabric and gold souks. I love learning about history and local culture at places like this.
