Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital Falcons hold an important place in UAE heritage. Back when the country was little more than desert, local tribes relied on tamed falcons to help them hunt for food. Today, they are prized as pets rather than hunters, but still retain their value as representatives of UAE culture and tradition. Abu Dhabi Food Festival The debut of Abu Dhabi Food Festival will see a host of culinary activities take place across the capital city, Western region of Al Gharbia and Al Ain. Held from February 5 to 21, there will be three events within the festival that will also spill over to the great outdoors: Emirati Kitchen through which visitors will be able to taste traditional cuisine; the annual Gourmet Abu Dhabi for a sample of fine dining with celebrity chefs; and StreetFeast, when 20 food trucks will head out to Madinat Zayed and the Corniche to serve up delicious dishes from around the world. Musical ambition The latest season of Abu Dhabi Classics celebrates musical harmony around the world

After a three-year hiatus, Abu Dhabi Classics has returned to the capital with renewed energy to the delight of classical music aficionados across the UAE. The international concert series that runs until May 28 has been praised for its line-up of artists from more than 20 countries for performances based around the theme of the traveller. From the seasonâ€™s opening night on October 14 last year with French pianist Lydie Solomon at Manarat Al Saadiyat to Jordi Savallâ€™s world premiere of a concert dedicated to the Islamic traveller Ibn Battuta in November, Abu Dhabi Classics concerts are playing to record audiences and also spurring a cultural dialogue, highlighting the harmony that exists between music from the east and west.

Inspiring travels Dedicated to the figure of the traveller, the 2014/15 Abu Dhabi Classics season is bringing some of the world’s best musical talent and orchestras to the emirate. The premiere of Grammy-award winning Jordi Savall’s Ibn Battuta: The Voyager of Islam I at Emirates Palace on November 20 remains one of the season’s key highlights. With the help of music ensemble Hespèrion XXI, Savall recreated the music of Ibn Battuta’s famed travels as talented artists performed pieces based on the explorer’s time in Morocco, Yemen and Afghanistan, taking visitors on a musical journey.

“The theme of the traveller for this edition was chosen for two reasons. One is that we are in a place of many travellers in Abu Dhabi. The emirate has always been a place of passage and a meeting point but, on the other hand, it’s also aspirational as something that you cannot reach and a longing nostalgia for the homeland,” explains Dr Ronald Perlwitz, head of music programming, culture sector, Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority. Abu Dhabi Classics started on October 14 last year with a rivetting piano recital dedicated to Chopin’s travels by French prodigy Lydie Solomon at Manarat Al Saadiyat. Since then, there has been a number of programmes related to the theme, such as Jordi Savall’s world premiere of Ibn Battuta, violinist Gidon Kremer with the Kremerata Baltica chamber orchestra’s performance titled The Four Seasons and pianist Khatia Buniatishvili’s concert in January based on her album, Motherland. “It’s the idea of a journey and, at the same time, the pain and sadness of leaving that the music tries to explore,” adds Perlwitz. “For Ibn Battuta: The voyager of Islam I, it was the very first time that Jordi Savall put together the concert and the fact that it had its world premiere in Abu Dhabi

shows that we’re putting the city on the classical music map. “We will have one of the best orchestras – Staatskapelle Dresden – with its top conductor Christian Thielemann performing at Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi on February 17 and Al Jahili Fort in Al Ain the day after with a programme including Bruckner’s 9th Symphony and Strauss’ A Hero’s Life, so there’s still a lot to look forward to,” says Perlwitz.

Nurturing talent Aside from the many musical highlights of Abu Dhabi Classics, the season also focuses on education with many of the visiting artists visiting schools and universities in the capital. “Often, we have a concert at universities before the actual concerts for the public. We did one with Lydie Solomon at the University of Al Ain and about 300 students attended. It’s important to go to educational establishments and have a discussion about classical music, what it means and offer more information. We also work closely with the Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) and have school children attend concerts during rehearsal times. What has been interesting to see is that the kids often don’t want to leave and instead want to stay on for the actual concert,” explains Amnah Ghanim, programme co-ordinator at TCA Abu Dhabi.

With the right mentorship and support, it’s only a matter of time before more young Emirati talent decides to carve out a career in classical music. Ghanim adds: “It may be a slow process for Emirati artists to be on the global stage but we are working with them in any way possible to help. On the one hand, the aim of Abu Dhabi Classics has always been to create a world-class event but also on the other hand, it is to really focus on education. It is working really well, especially with our close cooperation with ADEC.” These initiatives are also complemented by conferences and pre-concert talks on classical music and different composers, which has made this edition one of the most engaging and exciting yet. The season finale will take place in May when the new TCA Abu Dhabi Classics Music Awards will also be bestowed to leading international talent for the first time in the event’s history. “For the Abu Dhabi Classics Music Awards, we will be bringing young talent from all over the world to perform in different categories. They will include artists of all classical music forms – including Arabic music such as oud and Arabic singing – who will then be judged by a jury. Visitors attending will also be able to rate the musicians. In the end, only the best will win an award,” explains Perlwitz.

Bringing the worlds of east and west together, Spanish composer Jordi Savall’s Ibn Battuta: The voyager of Islam I was a resounding success and a second concert presenting another part of Battuta’s travels including India and the Far East is scheduled to take place in the 2015/16 Abu Dhabi Classics Season, which is already generating a lot of excitement in the community. “I’ve been looking forward to all Abu Dhabi Classics concerts and the feedback has been overwhelming,” says Perlwitz. “The first few concerts sold out after a few days despite being in big auditoriums, which is exciting as we’re talking about classical music, not something commercial like pop or rock. The group of people we’re talking to is much smaller but we took on the challenge to fill Emirates Palace with Jordi Savall and it has worked.” “People are really happy that the Abu Dhabi Classics season has returned and it gives me and my team the hope and the strength to keep carrying on and to build an even bigger 2015/16 season.”

Treasures of the sea Long before the discovery of oil, the countryâ€™s wealth lay hidden on the ocean floor for only the most courageous to retrieve Of all the worldâ€™s precious gems, the pearl is undoubtedly the most enchanting. Born of rivers and oceans, the rare treasures boast a stunning mirrored lustre and flawless form. Nestled within the shells of oysters and mussels, these ocean blooms are prized for their delicate beauty. Natural or wild pearls are extremely rare and as such the most valuable. Their scarcity has resulted in the production of farmed pearls to satisfy the huge demand for the gems. Pearls can be cultivated in either fresh or salt water. Saltwater pearls largely come from ocean oysters and are usually found in protected lagoons in the waters of Bahrain and Australia. Freshwater pearls come from a variety of species of river mussels in both warm and cold climates such as Scotland and China. To find just a single pearl, hundreds of oysters or mussels have to be gathered and opened, which adds to its exclusivity.

The overall value of a natural pearl is determined from its size, shape, colour, surface quality and luminosity. Single, natural pearls are often sold as collectors’ items or set in high-jewellery pieces. Very few matched strands of natural pearls exist with the rare finds selling for huge sums. In 1917, renowned jeweller Pierre Cartier purchased a Fifth Avenue mansion that is now home to the Cartier store in New York. He paid for the property with a matched, double strand of natural pearls valued at US$1 million at the time. Few realise that, for hundreds of years, the finest pearls in the world have been harvested from the waters of the Arabian Gulf. Its shallow and sheltered contours offer optimum conditions for oysters and there are still over 200 pearl diving sites off the UAE coast. Long before the advent of oil, it was the pearling industry that furnished the people of the UAE with an income. Many Bedouin families left the barren desert to settle on the coast and fish. As demand for pearls grew, many more families settled in the coastal villages which gained importance and influence, particularly Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The Diving Village in Dubai charts the emirate’s pearl diving past, keeping the memories of a unique moment in the UAE’s history alive. “Pearl diving

here dates back thousands of years. This is a very important part of the UAE’s heritage. Make no mistake, this was the hardest job in the world. Pearl divers would spend months at sea away from their families working in extremely dangerous conditions. We should all take the time to remember the important job that our fathers and grandfathers did. We should think back to that and appreciate all that we have now,” says Nasser Juma bin Sulaiman, director of the Diving Village. Nasser’s father was a pearl diver who

started in the trade at just 15 years old. It was commonplace for divers to learn as children, going out on diving trips with

I N T H E PA S T During the 18 th and early 19 th centuries, diving equipment in the Gulf was rudimentary with only a nose clip, known as a ‘fetam’, made from goat or gazelle horns to stop water flowing up a pearl diver’s nose and, for some, a basic protective suit to guard against jelly fish stings. With no breathing apparatus to aid them, divers had to hold their breath for several minutes at a time and attached a heavy stone to their toe with rope in order to save time on the descent to the sea bed. When the diver was ready, he would pull on the rope to be hauled back up.

their fathers. “The children would help out opening the oysters once they were caught, bringing water for the divers or helping with the ropes. There was plenty for them to do and this is how they learned to become divers,” says Nasser. Everyday life revolved around the pearl trade with merchants putting up the capital to equip boats for diving season. In return, they enjoyed the lion’s share of any profits made. The remainder of the money was distributed between the captain and crew. At the time, pearl diving boats were up to 60 feet long with crews of around 45 men from captain to divers and their

assistants. The peak pearl diving season began in July when crews sailed out for three months at a time. Working from sunrise to sunset, life on a pearl diving boat was tough. “The day started at 6am, the the crew would dive for oysters up to 30 times in a day before bringing them back to the boat and opening each one in the hope of finding a pearl. Once the sun went down, the men would pray, eat and sleep on the deck under the stars. “Physically, the crew was very lean and muscled as a result of the work but they also had many scars and deformities on their hands and feet from cuts where infection set in,” says Nasser. The divers’ dedication saw the UAE pearl trade become very lucrative with the precious gems exported to India, Iran and

Turkey. Pearls were also sold on to European and Chinese markets during the Gulf’s industry boom from the mid-18th century. The country’s industry sadly died out in the early 1930s as the world sank into economic depression and the Japanese created the cultured pearl. Local history and culture expert, Ali Al Saloom is endeavouring to restore the Arabian pearl to UAE waters and educate visitors on the importance of regaining this lost heritage with his Abu Dhabi Pearl Journey experience. “Surprisingly, few Emiratis have ever actually had the experience of opening an oyster,” says Al Saloom, who is well-known in the country for his website, askali.com, where he serves as a font of knowledge on the country’s culture and heritage. “I wanted to address this deficit.”

A l Sa loom comes f rom a pea rli ng background himself and was shocked to discover recently that, though many of his male ancestors were pearl divers, the local women rarely got to see these national treasures. “Not long ago, my mother told me that my grandmother had never had the opportunity to see or touch a pearl, despite living in the world’s greatest pearling region. It was the same for all women at the time – the men of the family would go off every year to dive for pearls and, at the end of the season, they would collect the pearls and sell them on straight away. They were too valuable to keep, so the family never got to see them,” Al Saloom explains. This family anecdote sparked Al Saloom’s interest in the country’s pearling history and he spent a year travelling around the UAE developing his knowledge and searching for a way to set about bringing back the lustre of the Arabian pearl. Al Saloom wanted to establish a platform that would give everyone – visitors and local Emiratis – the opportunity to experience this important part of UAE heritage. The result is the Abu Dhabi Pearl Journey, an eco-friendly boat tour through the Eastern Mangroves that focuses on the historic trade and includes an oyster-opening session using specimens from Al Saloom’s own farm. “I wanted to find a way to produce pearls in the most natural manner possible. There are still plenty of oysters in the Arabian Gulf. It’s just that the environment is no longer conducive to the production of pearls. What we have done is provide them with a protected, sheltered environment and,

from there, we simply insert a small grain of sand inside the shell and leave the oyster to do all the work.” There is no way of knowing, Al Saloom continues, which of the oysters will have successfully produced pearls but he does promise that enough will be provided to ensure that each guest undertaking the Abu Dhabi Pearl Journey gets a gem to keep. “In the future, we hope to add pearl diving to the experience and visitors will be able to gather as many oysters as they can before bringing them to the surface to open on deck.” Guests will have the opportunity to capitalise on the experience and, if they are lucky, get five, ten, 20 or even more pearls from their dive, which could potentially be worth several thousand dirhams, Al Saloom explains. “These pearls are already considered among the best in the region and garner a lot of interest on the international market. However, we didn’t get into this to sell the pearls for profit. Our aim is to give people an opportunity to learn more about this integral part of UAE history and help restore the country’s status as the pearling capital of the world.”

Crafting a legacy Emirati entrepreneur and artist Azza Al Qubaisi is committed to keeping artistic ambitions alive

UAE national Azza Al Qubaisi has made a name for herself as a respected artist, rising to fame with her signature jewellery brand Arjmst – Arabian Workshop for Jewellery and Gemstones in Abu Dhabi. Her jewellery collections reflect a strong sense of place with the desert, sea and even oud wood serving as design inspirations. She has exhibited her pieces around the world, but she’s now making it her mission to nurture the country’s up-and-coming talent with the Made in UAE initiative. Founded in 2006, Made in UAE was the first non-profit project that supported artisans in the country. “When I first started out, people doubted that anything based on local handicrafts could do well in the country, but today it is the norm,” Azza Al Qubaisi tells Concierge.

Once the body of the piece has been soldered into shape, filed, cleaned and polished, the final stage is embellishment. After the setting has been cast and foiled, stones and gems are cut and set into place with extreme precision resulting in a beautiful outcome that's then quality control checked before being delivered to Liali boutiques

Although the process is lengthy and involves several stages, machinery enables craftsmen to maintain a high level of accuracy and create several pieces at once

This is why I went on to establish certain government projects and, once they grew in size and had their own staff, I focused my efforts on just Made in UAE.” As the world becomes increasingly globalised, there is a renewed passion for preserving traditions and cultural heritage, which is what makes the idea behind Made in UAE so admirable. “Made in UAE is a platform for all artisans living in the UAE. that are more unique and different from what is already available in the market.” With a kiosk in Marina Mall Abu Dhabi, Made in UAE is a popular stop for visitors looking for unique souvenirs, but Al Qubaisi admits it has been a learning curve. “Our products used to be available in different locations in Abu Dhabi, but it’s an NGO project so I had to scale back and make it more focused just to keep it alive. I want to keep Made in UAE an NGO and not a profit-making platform. So far, it has been supported through the personal sales of my jewellery that I sell through Etihad Airlines as well as at various festivals in the country,” she explains.

While Al Qubaisi has worked with well over 100 artisans for the platform in the past, she now works with only a select few, paying special attention to both young and emerging designers. “Made in UA E is more focused on the craftsmanship and quality now. Our artisans range between 10 and 20 and that also includes a few expatriates. In fact, that’s one of the main factors with which I differentiated my platform – allowing non-Emiratis and everyone who lives in the country the opportunity to showcase as well. The few that are part of Made in UAE are already very successful and their products sell very well,” she adds.

Some of the more popular expatriate artisans involved include Bulgarian jewellery designer, Tatyana Cramer. Demand is high for her vintage-inspired pieces as each design is unique and exists in only a handful of versions, ensuring exclusivity. Then there’s Indian multimedia artist and craftswoman Pooja Peswani whose artistic Abu Dhabi souvenirs sport a strong local and UAE theme with camels, falcons and other cultural icons featured. Palestinian doctor and entrepreneur Dr Bassma Al Banna is also making waves in the crafts community with Bait Zait. Founded in 2013, Al Banna’s natural skincare line includes products made from essential oils, sea salt, coffee, herbs and fruits. The Made in UAE initiative also highlights traditional crafts such as those by Palestinian artisan Wissam Balchi whose fabrics feature hand-embroidered designs that celebrate the cultural heritage of his homeland. As the year progresses, there will be more exciting collaborations and artisans joining the Made in UAE portfolio.

“My vision for 2015 is to try to involve more young students to begin internships, allowing them to gain more experience through developing, designing and engaging with the public,” Al Qubaisi adds. In the near future, she hopes to attract corporate firms that want to be involved with projects that empower local women. Al Qubaisi remains a creative force in Emirati society, pushing the boundaries of conventional design while also linking it back to her culture and homeland. She recently launched a new sustainable furniture brand, Yareda, where high-quality pieces are made from palm tree leaves that are sourced locally. Another standout project is

the contemporary jewellery line Back2Burqa, produced in collaboration with up-andcoming designers who share a similar outlook to preserving art and tradition. “Inspired by the burqa, I worked with jewellery designer Salam Swaid for the first collection. This year, I’ll be working with another designer for a brand new collection, which is quite exciting.” “The idea behind Back2Burqa is to go beyond the UAE and change the way people visualise the burqa, as something old-fashioned. As an Emirati, the burqa is an integral part of my culture. I now want people to own it as jewellery and continue wearing it with pride.”

Timed to perfection Concierge visits the home of Glashütte Original to observe as the watchmaker both creates its timepieces and preserves a lasting legacy

Nestled in the Müglitz valley of Eastern Germany is the serene town of Glashütte. Here, at the birthplace of German watchmaking, the population is made up predominantly of skilled artisans who create beautiful timepieces for the country’s greatest watch houses. W hile competition and brand rivalry outside the Saxon town may be fierce, manufacturers in the watchmaking hamlet sit side by side in peaceful alliance. In the workshops of Glashütte Original, generations of families work alongside each other. Experienced artisans and fresh-faced graduates from Glashütte Original’s school for aspiring watchmakers work in unison, drawing on their strengths to craft some of the finest quality timepieces available. Walking through the workshops of Glashütte Original, the passion of the team here is evident and is reflected in an attention to detail that defines the final products. CEO Yann Gamard explains that watchmakers are committed to, and find great joy in, the quest for perfection. “They love to produce beautiful movements. Their attention and care in the finishing of each individual component is really what makes each piece special.”

The path for watchmakers and companies in Glashütte hasn’t been easy. The town has found itself in the middle of three wars and a number of political regimes; many of which threatened the survival of the watchmaking trade. After World War II, when a large area of nearby Dresden was destroyed, the watchmakers of Glashütte came together u nder one compa ny u mbrel la, GU B (Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe). When the Berlin Wall, separating East from West Germany fell in 1989, the company was temporarily closed. However, the pride and love for the unique art of German watchmaking endured and, in time, GUB restarted, minus a few brands that separated from the mother company, such as A. Lange & Söhne and Moritz Grossman. Glashütte Original set about rebuilding business and bringing back its craftspeople, rapidly growing the number of workers from 72 to today’s 550. Far from condemning past events, Gamard attributes much of the company’s success to its difficult early days. “We’ve had a very intense

history. We’ve been through monarchy, fascism, communism and democracy. This place has been told to believe in different things every time, so the watchmakers came to the understanding that the only real thing they could believe in was their art. They have consolidated their rules and ensured their survival through their art,” he says. Glashütte Original produces up to 95 percent of each timepiece’s components; essentially ever y t hing except leat her straps. Within the valley, the brand has two manufactories. It also runs a dial manufactory in Pforzheim in West Germany which creates intricate dials; each one often going through up to 90 stages before reaching completion.

Here visitors can peer through glass windows to a number of departments and watch artisans at work inside casting prototypes using high-tech laser equipment, handcrafting components that are almost invisible to the human eye as well as polishing, bevelling and engraving. from one side rather than by a bridge. It was first developed by German designer Alfred Helwig; a graduate of Glashütte’s school of watchmaking back in 1905. Some stages of the process to witness during a visit are almost overwhelming and the dedicated care and attention given to each step is second to none. Workmanship involved is so intricate that they often require the use of microscopes or a special eyeglass loupe worn on one eye. It’s a place of intense concentration. Only the lucky visitors are allowed to enter workshop spaces and speak with the employees during a tour.

Some of the timepieces produced at the manufactory are the models launched at last year’s Baselworld. Arguably the most exciting is Glashütte Original’s recent chronograph movement. The Calibre 37-01 column wheel chronograph was designed and handcrafted entirely in Glashütte workshops and was debuted within the Senator Chronograph Panorama Date. The movement is also fitted inside the steel Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date. Gamard says: “A chronograph is a fundamental function of the watch industry. We decided to rethink it completely under the motto ‘less is more’ to try and produce

as few components as possible; to make the best functioning chronograph possible. It has 438 components, so even when you say less is more, it’s still a very intricate piece.” He adds: “We’ve also added a number of other key functions to the model: power reserve; power reserve indicator; big date; and hour indicator, to make it a fully integrated, and yet beautiful, movement.” Glashütte Original also recently launched the PanoMaticInverse, a timepiece featuring a duplex swan-neck fine adjustment, visible from the dial, that follows the mechanic PanoInverse. The difference with this model is that the movements are automatic, catering

to clients who don’t want to wind their watches every day. Within the manufactory, craftsmen and designers are constantly working on fresh challenges and creating new complications. Gamard explains that the teams revel in

the opportunity to create more and more functions and build increasingly enduring and beautiful timepieces. “There’s a sort of race for what can be done the best and who can do it,” he says. Drawing the comparison between watchmakers and musicians, Gamard explains: “It’s about aesthetics and emotion. Who needs music? Everybody and nobody. A watch is the same.” At Glashütte Original, watchmakers play an extremely important, if not the most important, role. Gamard reveals that it takes 3,000 hours to first become a watchmaker and between 10 and 15 years to attain the skills needed to create a complicated piece such as a minute repeater. Training is ongoing and the brand is committed to finding new talent by offering free courses to promising applicants at its watchmaking school in the town of Glashütte.

Gaining an insight into Glashütte Original from the eyes of the watchmakers, the final results are testament to the many hours involved in crafting each piece. This knowledge, in turn, makes the timepiece even more special to the wearer. “A watch is historical. It tells a story about you,” says Gamard. “It’s a very intimate relationship directly on your skin and is certainly not just to tell time. To tell time nowadays people have smart phones. You use a watch to reflect what you want to say, who you want to talk to and ultimately, who you are.”

Keneth Kim Japanese restaurant Inakaya brings authentic Asian flavours to the UAE capital’s burgeoning dining scene. “We believe that simple ingredients can go a long way and offer diners the opportunity to enjoy natural flavours enhanced through robatayaki cooking techniques,” explains the restaurant’s executive chef Keneth Kim. “Our signature dish is the Kin Medai, which translates to Golden Big Eye Snapper. It is specially imported from Japan. The dish has classic flavours that are the best,” Kim says.

Complementing the food is our impeccable service to ensure every dining experience is truly memorable,” Recabarren tells Concierge. A couple of years ago, Recabarren worked under chef Kathleen Blake at JW Marriott Grande Lakes in Orlando, Florida and she became his role model. “The way I work now and my cooking style were in many aspects influenced by the things I learnt from her: hard work and constantly striving to deliver the best dishes while working with organic products,” he adds. According to Recabarren, the secret to his signature culinary style remains the use of fresh ingredients but also the right balance to bring out flavours in a natural manner. “I like to experiment with new ideas. At the moment, my favourite dish to cook is the Maryland Crab Cake with truffle shavings – the taste is out of this world.”

Didier Quennouelle A visit to Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi, is not complete without dining at Bord Eau. Chef de cuisine of the restaurant, Didier Quennouelle, explains why. “We only use the freshest and best quality ingredients of the season with respect to careful seasoning and cooking procedures. Our signature dish is La Main Tendue with caviar ocietra and wodla that has to be sampled.” Quennouelle boasts an admirable list of culinary achievements to his credit but one of his fondest moments remains his contribution to a gala dinner for France’s new president Nicolas Sarkozy in the hotel Fouquet’s in Paris. To Quennouelle, the art of cooking involves using the best ingredients from across the world and crafting “dishes with passion”.

James Norman Dining at Emirates Palace is nothing short of an experience, explains the hotel’s executive chef James Norman. “We have over 200 chefs who are dedicated to producing great food and let’s not forget buyers and quality control team members who work tirelessly behind the scenes to source great produce. My job at Emirates Palace is to ensure everything we serve is of the best quality, creative and beyond what guests expect,” he adds.

“My first day at Emirates Palace will always be special. After 20 years of hard work in many kitchens around the world, it really is something else to walk through the 128 kitchens and pantries of Emirates Palace as executive chef.” With such a high-pressure role, it’s no wonder Norman has little free time to call his own. When he does, he spends it with his children but admits that sailing is one of his lifelong passions. While Norman has crafted a variety of signature dishes over the years, he admits that the Veal from Head to Toe with pressurecooked asparagus and white truffle is one of his favourites. “I enjoy cooking with great ingredients, simple flavours and elegant presentation,” Norman adds.

With the aim of providing the best Italian food in Abu Dhabi, Bocca at Hilton Abu Dhabi has been delighting visitors for years. The restaurant’s high standards for authenticity are down to Bocca’s chef de cuisine Leonardo Passone. I have lived in Abu Dhabi for a couple of years and think it is a wonderful city. Working for the Etihad Modern Art Gallery, I’m surrounded by art all day long and I get to meet, interact and network with people from so many different cultures here.The city really does offer a lot to both residents and visitors alike. At weekends, I like to spend time with friends and play sports such as basketball and table tennis at Zayed Sports Centre, which I recommend for visitors who are keen on staying active in the city.We also enjoy discovering new places to eat and, fortunately, there are many restaurants and cafés in Abu Dhabi. I really enjoy the roasted veggie wrap at Art House Café, which is part of the Etihad Modern Art Gallery – it’s a real treat for vegetarians and the artistic ambience of the café is very unique. For those who enjoy Japanese fare in a casual setting, Sushi Central at Al Khalidiya serves a delicious kabayaki eel uramaki. For fine dining, five-star hotels such as Fairmont Bab Al Bahr, The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort and Hilton Abu Dhabi all have fantastic restaurants to choose from. For me, one of the best events hosted in the city so far has been the 2014 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix that took place

in November and I can’t wait for the next edition. Seeing people visit from all over the world to not just watch the races but also explore Abu Dhabi is wonderful. The city was so alive. When I get homesick, I always head to Saadiyat Beach as it reminds me of Perth in Australia and the weather right now is perfect. It’s my favourite time of year. I always recommend friends and family make the time to visit Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and attend one of their tours to really appreciate the grandeur and detail behind the architectural marvel. There’s also so much to see and do around Yas Island, from trying out the world’s fastest roller coaster at FerrariWorld Abu Dhabi to splashing around at fun water park, Yas Waterworld. They also shouldn’t miss the chance to stroll around the five-star Emirates Palace hotel, which is an icon in the city. A popular art venue in Abu Dhabi is Manarat Al Saadiyat on Saadiyat Island but there is a number of galleries located across the city that also host exceptional exhibitions from talented artists around the world.With so many different arts and culture events taking place in the emirate all through the year, I think Abu Dhabi’s art scene is wonderfully vibrant and one of the best.
