Oh summer, beautiful summer. Your days are endless with warmth that touches us to our cores. You can ignite our souls with beauty, excitement, and rekindle our enthusiasms by your energetic glow. It is a time for love and laughter, light and life. We anticipate summer all year, and when it arrives, it never seems like enough - much like our favorite shows to watch this season. We look to our cover story Julie Benz, as well as Ian Anthony Dale, Taylour Paige, the women of WAGS, Ryan Newman, and Haley Orrantia on what we should have on our must-watch list to keep us reveling with excitement. But with all things truly beautiful, summer is fleeting; a moment in the arc of seasons we must cherish each go-around. We must seize it by all of the colors it generously offers us. Even the arrival of June gloom cannot cast its gray skies on this issue as we highlight warm-weather styles and the colorful personalities that grace these pages. So, on we go to celebrate summer!

GET IN THE
GLOW
by Jeanie Kim
Now that the chilly months of winter are behind us we can come out of hibernation and look forward to brighter spring days filled with revitalized energy. We can finally allow our skin to breathe in tank tops, shorts and sandals. By now, your tan from last summer has worn off and it’s time to start anew. If you’re ready to embrace your new wardrobe but your complexion doesn’t quite match, you can achieve the enviable bronzed look overnight! Whether indoor or outdoor, tanning from UVA and UVB exposure poses risks of skin cancer and pre-maturely aged skin. Luckily, there has never been a better time to “tan” safely with all the self-tanning products available to us now. Gone are the days of questionable solutions that produce streaky orange color. Follow these steps for a sun-kissed glow without the dangerous side effects.
NORVELL SELF TANNING GEL-CRÈME WITH INSTANT BRONZERS $25.00 VENETIAN SUNLESS MOUSSE $30.00 VENETIAN SUNLESS COLOR EXTENDER $8.00
ST. TROPEZ SELF TAN BRONZING MOUSSE $32.00
1
Choose a good self-tanner: There are a myriad of options out there so make sure to choose one with a good reputation and reviews.
2
Patch test: No matter which self-tanner you choose, always do a patch test on a small, discreet parts of your body like your inner arm. Do this 24 hours in advance so that you can see the color fully developed.
3
Shave and exfoliate: This step is crucial in maintaining the color you so diligently worked for. Shaving or waxing can strip color so make sure to do this beforehand. Also, if you don’t slough off the dead skin you’re color will fade much quicker. I would recommend going to a Korean spa for a good, clean canvas to work with. Otherwise, use an exfoliating washcloth or a nice gritty scrub in your shower. (photo) Make sure you dry your skin completely before applying any product so that you get a more even tan. ST. TROPEZ ONE NIGHT ONLY INSTANT GLOW BODY LOTION $18.00
4
Pay attention to your ankles, knees, elbows and wrists. These areas absorb more product so you want to use less by diluting it. Mix with regular body lotion and blend well.
5
Be methodical: The last thing you want is to be rushed or careless. Start with your legs, torso, and then work your way up to your arms for a more natural look. Apply one section at a time and wash your hands with soap after each section if you’re not using a tanning mitt or latex gloves. Massage in a circular motion and make sure you do not miss any spots.
6
Wait for your skin to dry completely before getting dressed and avoid sweating or showering for 6 to 8 hours.
7
Keep your skin moisturized with body lotion to extend the life of your new tan!

ulti-talented actor and director Ian Anthony Dale talks to Composure about growing up Asian, a possible wedding for Dale’s “Hawaii Five-O” character, Adam, as well as playing Jim Koto in “Murder In the First”. Dale also talks about voice-over work and “Bulbul: Song of the Nightingale”-a documentary near and dear to his heart. CM: You grew up in St Paul, Minnesota and are of Japanese, French, and English descent. What did your childhood look like?

IAD: Like many kids, I played sports, drank way too much pop, and picked on my sister… so I’d say it was a pretty normal childhood. I can recall many days below freezing and snow up to my knees, but that’s every kid’s childhood in the Twin Cities. However, as a mixed race Asian kid growing up in an environment with such a heavy Nordic influence, I encountered a number of unique challenges that played a critical role in my development. It wasn’t always easy being the one token Asian of the group, not having anyone outside of my own family who could truly identify with my experience, my point of view. It could be very

lonely at times in that respect. But fortunately I was able to find inclusion and acceptance through athletics, and later on in the theater. CM: What was the defining moment that inspired you to be an actor? IAD: I’m not sure there was ever one specific moment that lit the spark for me. What does inspire me however, is when I see actors using their voices to make a positive impact around the world. Actors like George Clooney advocating to find a resolution to the conflict in Darfur, Sean Penn with his J/P Haitian Relief Organization, and Brad Pitt’s Make It Right Foundation formed in the wake of hurricane Katrina. These, and countless other actors/ humanitarians have inspired me to explore different ways in which I can use my voice for good. Having a platform to make a difference is one of the most rewarding outgrowths of our profession. CM: You have stepped onto the sets of numerous great TV shows. What has that been like for you? IAD: I have a genuine passion for storytelling and an insatiable curiosity about the filmmaking process, so being on a set has always felt like home to me. It’s a wonderful place to learn if you take advantage of it. I’ve been on a number of sets throughout my career and have worked with so many talented and generous people who have taught me so much. Lately I’ve been shadowing directors on “Murder In The First.” I’ve always had an interest in directing and am getting such an invaluable education from the directors and producers of our show. I can already identify that directing is something I’m going to really enjoy. CM: You play the role of Adam Noshimuri on Hawaii Five-O. Tell us about the season finale: Adam & Kono’s wedding.
IAD: Fans of the show have been waiting a long time to see Adam and Kono tie the knot. Unfortunately they’re going to have to wait just a little bit longer. As luck would have it, when the big day finally arrives, Kono and the Five-0 team get held up thwarting a nuclear attack on the island. But adversity is nothing new for this bride and groom, and I anticipate they will be facing even greater obstacles in the future. We just got picked up for a sixth season so you’ll have to tune in to the season premiere to see if Kono finally says, “I do.” CM: “Murder in the First” Season 2 premieres in June. What can we expect from Jim Koto in this upcoming season? IAD: In the season two premiere, Koto and the rest of the Homicide unit are thrust right in the middle of one of the most shocking crimes in San Francisco history. A mass shooting on a High School bus spills into the streets of the city, followed by a shootout with the SFPD and a manhunt for one of the assailants. This heinous crime will take both an emotional and physical toll on Koto as he struggles to understand how something like this could happen and what he could’ve done to prevent it. CM: If you could describe in ONE word your costar Taye Diggs, what would it be? IAD: Genuine. CM: You have done voice overs on games like Call of Duty. Was that unexpected? IAD: A number of times throughout my career, friends and co-workers would encourage me to get involved in voice over. It was never something I actively pursued until a few years ago when a young agent reached out to me and expressed an interest in working together. I’ve since lent my voice to a handful of video games and cartoons, and I must say it’s a lot of fun. Right now I’m

working on this really exciting cops and robbers game called Battlefield Hardline. I get to yell expletive laden commands into a microphone and get paid for it. I certainly never expected that. CM: What is the most interesting comment you have received regarding your voice? IAD: Someone on twitter once told me they would like to record my voice telling them a naughty bedtime story. Or maybe it was a naughty wake up call. I just remember it having to do with something naughty. People say all kinds of crazy stuff online. CM: Tell us about Bulbul: Song of Nightingale.

IAD: Lately my energy has been focused on helping raise money in order to complete “Bulbul: Song Of The Nightingale,” a documentary that brings attention to the social and human injustices suffered by the Banchara tribe in India. The Banchara has existed at the bottom of Indian society for centuries, relying on prostitution as their economic lifeblood, forcing girls as young as twelve years old into the trade. By sharing the story of the Banchara, our hope is to raise awareness and spark sustainable change within their community through healthcare, education, and alternative economic opportunities. This summer, Natalie Halcro, Nicole Williams, and Olivia Pierson take us into their new reality TV series on E! that showcases the lives of the Wives and Girlfriends of Sports (WAGS). CM: What was your reaction when E! approached you to the idea of doing the a WAGS show? Natalie: I was a little hesitant at first. No one would believe me now but I’m actually a very private and shy person naturally. Plus, the idea that the show focuses on women just because their spouses/boyfriends are famous wasn’t easy for me. But after giving it some thought, I realized it actually does showcase some strong and diverse women. It’s also like the greatest home movie ever. That’s on E! Nicole: Well, at first I wasn’t sure what WAGS was. When I found out I thought it was a cool idea, but I was still nervous about putting my life on TV for the world to see! Now I’ve gotten comfortable and it’s actually really fun. I have a great time with the girls. We’re like a big family now. Olivia: When I was approached to do the show WAGS on E!, my first thought was this sounds like a TON of fun, I’m in. I am the single one

on the show and looking for love. CM: Beautiful, driven, and outspoken are just a few words that have been used to describe the women on the show. Can you share three of your own words to describe yourselves and why? Natalie: Tenacious, inspired, feminist. Nicole: I would say creative, genuine, and nurturing. Olivia: Three words to describe myself would be: Goofy - I don’t take life too seriously. I’m very sarcastic, constantly joking around and I’m always looking to have a good time. Enjoy life! Sensitive - From the outside, people may think I’m tough and I sometimes get misunderstood, but I am probably one of the most sensitive girls around. When you get to know me you quickly see I’m a softy. Loyal - My horoscope sign is Leo, the loyal Lion and I defiantly hold to that trait. I’m a ride-or-die type of girl- when I love someone, I love them hard. No other man fazes me when I’m in a committed relationship. CM: What are some of the challenging aspects of being in a relationship with an athlete?

Natalie: Having to small talk with other wives and girlfriends at the games. Hah! I’m kidding. . . kinda. But seriously, every relationship has challenging aspects. My boyfriend Shaun has an extraordinary job and we’re both very busy. But us being busy, weird, supportive, encouraging, and challenging each other isn’t really an athlete/girlfriend thing. It’s just us. A lot of the time, managing other people’s expectations about what a “WAG” is can be exhausting. Shaun and I love each other. But we don’t define or own each other. Anything less is sexist and codependent, really. Nicole: The most challenging thing is probably spending time apart. We both travel so much that it gets hard sometimes. We miss each other a lot. Olivia: One of the most challenging aspects of being in a relationship with an athlete has to be how time consuming their job is. For months on end it’s all about your man, and you as their significant other better know what you’ve signed up for! CM: The series is set for eight episodes - can you share any exciting teasers? Natalie: Let’s just say there is a lot of nudity. See? Who’d believe I’m shy now? No one! (laughter) Nicole: You’re just going to have to watch and find out ;) Olivia: In our season of WAGS, you will definitely get your fair share of arguments and disagreements between all of us women. We go on a few vacations, which are always filled with drama to say the least. This season I’m on the hunt to find my dream man but it isn’t as easy as you would think to land a great guy in the sports world. Stay tuned... CM: Can you share a favorite moment from the show? Natalie: My family flew down for my birthday and met Olivia and me in Mexico. We have

missed them so much since moving to LA, it was so great to be with them again. We misbehaved and laughed for a week straight. It was fantastic. Nicole: We took an exotic trip and had a LOT of fun… That’s all I can say. Olivia: One of my favorite moments has to be my cousin Natalie’s birthday bash in Mexico. We invited our whole family and that’s an episode you definitely don’t want to miss! Our family has its own quirks and humor- they really made this trip unforgettable. CM: Can you tell us about your modeling career? And your blogging? Natalie: I have always been consumed by fashion. Totally obsessed. The creation of a look, a character, a style, and how it can reflect and magnify yourself or a client- consumes me. Our blog and Instagram pages have been such fun platforms to share with everyone, our inspirations for clothing and beauty. Nicole: I’ve been modeling since the age of twelve. I signed with my first big agency NEXT at the age of sixteen. I then moved to New York and worked there for seven years signed with Major Models. From there I moved to LA where I signed with LA Models. I’ve traveled and worked internationally from Milan to Cape Town. It’s been a real humbling feeling being able to travel the world and do what I love. I’ve done campaigns such as Bebe Sport, Levi’s, Nike, Avon, La Senza, Caché, Macy’s, Kohls, and Salon Grafix just to name a few. You also might have seen me in commercials for Old Navy, Marshalls, Nissan, and Mazda. Olivia: I have a blog www.jeromebynatliv.com with Natalie that is anything fashion and beauty. We both have a large following on Instagram so we decided to take it to the next level with our blog. We post anything from outfit-of-theday to where you can find our exact outfit or a more affordable option. As of right now we are in the process of a new and improved version so stay tuned! Everyone on Instagram asks what
Natalie and I are wearing or what makeup we are using, so one project we are working on is making our own custom eyelashes. We tailor our own to fit our eyes specifically so figured we would make them available to our followers. With our Instagram following and blog we are asked often to do makeup & hair tutorials. We are starting a YouTube channel very soon- be on the lookout for our beauty secrets! CM: What other projects are coming up for you this year? Or what projects do you hope to do? Natalie: Olivia and I are launching a YouTube channel in the near future. We are really excited to join the YouTube community. There are few other things we’re working on behind the scenes that we’re excited about! Nicole: I really want to get into more TV work. I’d love to guest star on a show like The Walking Dead. I’m really into horror and creepy things! Olivia: An awesome project I was involved with was a coffee table book called, ‘In the Tub’. It’s all types of artistic photography of people in bathtubs, and the proceeds go towards breast cancer awareness. It was a super fun photo shoot that had a particularly special meaning for me. I’m all for supporting charity and spreading the word. This is set to come out in September. Natalie shot for it as well, but have no fear... we shot it in our own tubs! Right now I am in the works with a fashion designer collaborating on a women’s pant suit and few other pieces. Everything is in process right now but keep a look out for it soon! I am looking forward to WAGS coming out but nervous at the same time. You never know what people are going to run with when they watch the show. But I knew I was getting into by doing the show. It comes with the territory! Regardless, I’m excited for this new adventure and what’s to come! “WAGS”– 10 pm ET/PT, Tuesday, August 18.

Lee and Lani SWIM
fashion designer profile
From fashion school to a powerhouse design team, Lee and Lani Swimwear is quickly becoming an Instagram sensation. I ran across this amazing swimwear line while perusing through social media many months ago, and knew they were ones to watch. Lee “Lisa-Marie Pascuccio” and Lani “Alana Ault” met while attending fashion school, a few years ago. While they both found inspiration in one anothers’ style, it also became apparent they both shared a passion for creativity and art. Each girls’ unique sense of style has lead to an insanely amazing collections that speak to every gal.
CM: Who are Lee + Lani?
CM: What made you start Lee + Lani Swim?
Lee: The fashion industry has always been so fascinating to me. From a very young age I knew I was meant to be a part of it. I went to school for Merchandise Marketing but I’ve had my hand in every possible job in the industry. I’ve modeled, been a buyer, styled, PR Sales and assistant designed. I wanted to create a sexy and fashion forward swim brand with silhouettes that can be worn in and out of the water. I love clean lines that are daring! Edgy would be the term to describe my design style.
Lee: I started modeling and traveling at a very young age so I got to experience different cultures and what the world has to offer. After a modeling contract in Asia where I was surrounded by Brazilian girls with beautiful swimwear, it just clicked, American brands were lacking that sexy and daring swimwear brand.
Lani: I come from a very design and styling rich background. I feel like I’m someone who enjoys finding ways to push the envelope and make people wonder what’s going on in my head of untamed messy hair. I’m always trying to come up with different constructions or applications to change up the swimwear game. Lisa is my muse, I drape many things directly on her body to ensure it fits esthetic and design line placement. Designing our suits can be really tricky, especially when a small cloud or sun is the only thing keeping them from being x rated. Together we have formed a brand that turns heads and stops traffic. We are the brand people come to for the latest in swimwear fashion. We take pride in blurring the lines between social norms and acceptance.

I came back to the states, met with Alana, told her I wanted to start a swim line and the rest is history! Lani: I just came back to LA after getting married and having a baby. I wanted to start my own brand and having a background in design, it just made sense. CM: Who is the Lee + Lani Swim girl? What does she stand for? LLS: The Lee + Lani swim girl is the most complete woman on the beach. She is the perfect combination of attitude, charisma and sex. CM: Your textiles and designs are very unique, how do you set yourself apart from other swimwear lines? LLS: When we first started our company six years ago, we were told “we were too sexy”, “America wasn’t ready for us”, that “we pushed limits too far” and “It’s swimwear, you don’t have to re-invent the wheel”. We took these comments very seriously and continued to push the limits and I think we did re-invent the wheel and we created amazing one-ofa-kind pieces because of it. We focus the majority of our energy on original concepts. We also never reference other swim brands during the creation process, which has really been instrumental in helping our brand separate from the pack. CM: You have some of the hottest swim campaigns, where does the creative direction and inspiration come from? LLS: Inspiration comes from any and everything. We are both very hands on during the entire creative direction process. We lay out inspiration from location, lighting, hair, makeup, styling and we
hand select our models. We do everything ourselves. At this point, we then bring it to Karla Ticas, who shoots all of our campaigns and creates all of our branding. She is instrumental in bringing our vision to life and creating that seamless cohesiveness that makes a Lee and Lani campaign look like a Lee and Lani campaign. CM: What is your future plans for Lee + Lani, and where do you see your brand in the next 5yrs? LLS: Lisa and I plan to build Lee and Lani into a full lifestyle brand and go to an e-commerce site. We plan too expand our retail, and wholesale capacity, while influencing swimwear trends globally, and creating a cult following. CM: Where can we find Lee + Lani swim? We’ve been blessed to have such amazing outlets for our brand. We can be found on our site leeandlani. com of course, as well as Nasty gal, Revolve, Swell, Static, Shop Nylon, Asos, Diane’s beachwear, and Dailylook just to name a few. CM: What are some new projects you have coming up for Lee + Lani? LLS: We really want to break into active wear and ready to wear. Our main focus has been swim but we’re super excited to start branching out. We also have two HUGE collaborations for SS16, but we can’t spill the beans yet! All we have to say is stay tuned! ctress and former Laker Girl Taylour Paige talks to CM about growing up as a tomboy. She candidly opens up to CM about bullying, adolescence in a challenging environment, and the strength she draws from within as an actress in VH1’s “Hit the Floor” and HBO’s new series, “Ballers”. She also talks about her French Bulldog and other inspirations that enable her to start each day with love and grace. CM: So Taylour, you grew up as a tomboy following in your brother’s footsteps, and you loved basketball. On top of that, you were the only girl on your team. What was that like? TP: That was amazing because I’ve always been really active. My mom couldn’t get me to sit still. We’d be driving and the sound of the car blinker would go off like, “click, click, click”. And I’d be in the back seat like, “click, click”, doing choreography. So anything to get my energy out, because I was always bouncing off the walls. I went to Catholic School my whole life, and the nuns were always like, is something wrong? And then I wanted to play basketball, just like my older brother. I wanted to be just like him because he was so cool. And this kind of inspired me to be different. I did play with Barbies, but I loved Barbies because I got to tell stories, dress them, and give them this whole soap opera plot, and make my Barbies

fight over a man. It all made sense because it infiltrated into my acting. CM: So you always had a taste for drama. Can you expand on your relationship with your older brother? TP: My older brother Travis – we’re eight years apart. That’s a really big age gap. So it was always me, my mom, and my brother. I always admired Travis - he’s really, really smart. He skipped a grade. He always read. Kind of influenced my love for music because he ranged in his choices in music, from rap and R&B, to rock. He introduced me to Sugar Ray and Red Hot Chili Peppers. I was always seeking his approval because he was really critical. He still is. I’m sure he’ll read this and be like, “Thanks for putting me out there”. He’s critical in a way that has always made me push. I mean, sometimes it’s a problem in relationships, and I can be really hard on myself. But I think that it’s good as an artist. You never want to be too comfortable. You always want to be the best version of yourself. CM: Be intentional. TP: Yeah. I have a vision board. I always do vision boards every six months. In gold letters on my current vision board it says, “Be Intentional”. That’s how I’m trying to live my life, because I feel like in LA we’re in go-time,

of kind of getting away. I just always needed to be dancing, or acting, or putting on a show. CM: I think you touched on a really important point. The arts are oftentimes used as therapy. Can you share a little more about that part, like how you were bullied?

and we’re in tomorrow-land and yesteryear. It’s important that you relish the moment. CM: That’s amazing, thank you. Going back then to when you were young. You studied ballet since you were two. TP: Yeah I’ve been dancing since the minute my mom knew I could walk and not hit my head. I’ve always been very clumsy. It’s ironic because ballet is so graceful and that’s the only time where I feel really ladylike. Sometimes, when I’m hurt I dance, and other times I dance because I’m hurt. It’s my connection to this other worldly thing I can’t really describe. And it’s cool because its not really something that anyone has to understand but me when I’m doing it. With dance, you don’t get anything tangible, but you get those moments where you feel the most alive, the most connected, and the most present. My mom saw me at my most confident because I got bullied. It was my way
41
CO MP O SU R E MA G AZI N E.COM
TP: Kids are mean and immature. Often, it’s what makes us all different and special. When I transferred to a new school, these kids had been going to school with each other since they were in kindergarten. They just found reasons to kind of pick at me. Girls would throw wet paper towels at me or make me take tests to play with them. Just really stupid stuff that now, I’m like it’s okay, you were bullied. Everyone was bullied. I’m not trying to sound like some martyr. But it was definitely cool that I would get to school and be like, ugh, I can’t wait to get off of school because I get to go dance. Having an outlet is important, whether it ends up being your career or not. I also have ADHD and it’s really awful. I think a lot of times we want to medicate kids before they even come into their own and process why they’re the way they are. When you’re young you think, why is there something wrong with me? Why am I different? Why is it hard for me to focus? Why is it a challenge? And really there is nothing wrong with you, you just learn differently. I think that dance has always been this consistent, non-judgemental [space]. CM: Not everyone is comfortable with themselves. TP: We only get one life. We only get one life in this body. And people need to feel comfortable. I mean, I think it’s just so sad to think that you could go your whole life feeling like you have to live a lie. It’s important that people feel comfortable enough to be themselves. Let people be themselves and love them the way they are because we don’t need more judgmental people. We don’t need more hate. We need more compassion. CM: I notice when I scroll through your Twitter, that’s a topic that you’re passionate about – compassion.
TP: It’s just about being kind. It just seems so simple. People are so quick to judge and label. There’s not one person you couldn’t love if you read their story. Everyone is battling something. I have a hard time thinking you could live your whole life from the time you were a baby, to 20, to 60, to 100, and not get to be 100% who you want to be because you’re afraid of what people think of you. The people who judge them and make them feel like they can’t be themselves, that’s what’s stupid. Because you don’t know what someone’s going through. CM: Right. TP: I don’t really like social media. But if I’m gonna have it, I hope that if I were to die tomorrow, it would be a reflection of helping people love themselves. Because I can’t really care what you think of me, I care what you think of you. If you really loved yourself, there wouldn’t be time to reject or to judge. CM: But your experience as someone who loved basketball, and then eventually dancing on the court as a Laker Girl - it’s as if your role as Asha in “Hit the Floor” was perfect. TP: It definitely feels like I’ve seemingly prepared for this my whole life. I’m not going to go out there and say I loved basketball. I think it was just a way that I felt cool because I’m the only girl and I’m tough. But that was a phase. In terms of dancing and being a Laker girl, I worked three to four jobs my entire college career, which wasn’t fun. So why not audition to be a Laker girl and maybe make some side money? And I like the Lakers. So I did it, kind of on a whim. And I ended up doing it, and hating it, to be honest. I think I value it because it was an experience, and I think every experience adds color to my work as an actress. When I auditioned for Asha, I remember seeing it and going, oh - this is my role. It’s my second semester senior year. I’m going to need a job. I, so far, have done tons of commercials since I was ten. I’ve been in a ton of musicals. And I’ve been waiting for this opportunity. From arguing with my mom, to being raised by a

single parent, to being raised with not that much money. Then, being in private school - to being, a lot of the time, the only black girl, or going to the Caro Ballet Academy and being the only black girl there also. Just taking all of these experiences and mixing them up like gumbo – I’m Creole. Then, putting it all together in my work for Asha and the future. And here I am. It’s really cool. CM: It’s amazing because when you watch this show, there is really awesome choreography. Do you sometimes think: can we do it a little more like this? TP: Oh no. Our show isn’t the place for that. Especially because it’s TV and we move really fast. Michael Rooney, the choreographer, is amazing. He’s Mickey Rooney’s son. He’s legendary. On “Hit the Floor”, it is technical. And it’s cool because I can [do many of the moves]. Rarely as a dancer do you get to incorporate everything that you’ve ever learned. Rarely do you get to incorporate every type of dance you’ve ever learned. On television, it’s so quick. Maybe a four count or an eight count, and then they’re moving on. I’ve strived for perfection. And I won’t achieve it as an actress and I won’t achieve it as a dancer, but it keeps me on my toes. CM: And now you’re working on a television show called “Ballers”, which is coming out in June. Can you tell us about that? TP: Well first of all it’s HBO. Everything they do turns to gold. Let’s be real. I am so, so excited about this show. It’s going to be so great, and so funny. The Rock is the star and it is from the creators of Entourage. I’m really excited because you guys get to see me in a different light. Been playing Asha for almost four years now. And I love Asha. I’ve grown with Asha. My life has paralleled in some ways with Asha. But [in “Ballers”] I’m playing someone’s younger sister, Theresa. I have kids, and I am loud and I am opinionated. Very opposite of my character on “Hit the Floor”. You know, I think you’ll get to see Asha come into her own a little bit more and stand on her own two feet, but she’s been
43
CO MP O SU R E MA G AZI N E.COM
forced to do so. But Theresa is a 21-year-old mother who is not going to give it away. She’s going to tell you what she thinks whether you asked for her opinion or not. She’s really ballsy. And it’s exciting to play strong women on TV. CM: Do you feel like you personally identify with Theresa more? TP: I’m just starting [out with her character]. There’s many layers to everybody. I am so talkative but I don’t think people know I’m actually an introvert. I actually like being by myself and meditating and doing things alone. I look forward to going home and writing in my agenda book. Or journaling. Or just listening to music really loud and not adhering to anything. I get my energy from being alone, but you probably would never know that because I’m really social. So basically, I’d like to think that all of the characters that I get to play now and in the future are just layers of me. I’m going to bring a truth from my life into it. I substitute my own experiences to make it real. CM: Taylor, what gets you up every morning? TP: I have a puppy named Peaches and she’s a French Bulldog. She definitely gets me up in the morning because she’s still potty training and she likes to leave little brownies around my room. But really, what gets me up in the morning is to thank my heavenly angels. I literally get up, close my eyes and I thank God for the most magical day of my life. But I’m not going to lie. Sometimes I get up and I just want to go back to sleep. Sleep is my babe. But I kind of get up and I go, okay I’m here, I’m alive, and I’m healthy. What am I going to do to be the better version of Taylour? I don’t want anyone to leave me without feeling happier. And that’s how I start - besides pushing snooze 16 times and hoping that I could sleep 10 more minutes. CM: Thank you.

GINGHAM by Dominique Aimee
STYLE
There is a great trend that has re-surfaced, and any woman can pull it off! This wonderful style is all about Gingham! Gingham is a woven fabric (usually cotton) with a checkered appearance. It is especially fresh and fun for summer! There are many versatile ways to rock Gingham and here are just a few to start.
FULL ON GINGHAM For the bold fashionista, a stunning all gingham outfit is automatically worthy of a selfie. Check this top and shorts from Girls on Film
GINGHAM SEPARATES For those who are not bold enough to wear a gingham dress, separates are the way to go. There are several options that can be incorporated into your existing wardrobe. Gingham tops, blouses, blazers, skirts and pants are everywhere right now! Gingham can be worn in a variety of situations as well. At the office? Try a gingham blazer like this one from Girls on Film. The long length of the gingham blazer keeps this look eye catching and unique. Pair the blazer with a crisp white blouse and a great classic trouser.
For a more casual look, you can wear a long gingham skirt, like this one from AMI CLUBWEAR. Add a simple tank top and sandals. Pair with some great eye catching jewelry and a cute cross body bag. Instant upgrade to an otherwise basic outfit!
GINGHAM ACCESSORIES Gingham can also be incorporated into accessories. Going on a date? Wear a killer white jumpsuit with a pair of gingham print shoes like these from AMI CLUBWEAR. A blue & white or black & white gingham print are the most popular colors for gingham; but feel free to mix things up! Orange and white is a killer combo! Guaranteed to slay!
A gingham dress is a more subtle way to show off the full on flirty gingham trend. Check out the street style of actress Emmy Rossum. Flawless!

FASHION Krasimira Georgieva and Kamola Taflan of
fashion designer profile
Kristina George Proof that pursuing your true passion leads to great things: Best friends Krasimira Georgieva and Kamola Taflan followed through on a long-time dream of designing a line of highend handbags together. The result? The extraordinary Kristina George collection.
CM: You both worked in the finance industry for 10 years before starting Kristina George. We’re obviously thrilled it happened, but what spurred the drastic career change? KG: We both had an awakening moment three years ago – we have had successful careers and opportunity to grow further but there was a missing part. Fashion has always been our true passion so we decided to turn this life long interest into a new career. Our business education and experience in the finance industry gave us the tools and discipline to make a leap into this completely new field. CM: Tell us about the transition. So many people have ambitions they view as pipe dreams, but you guys actually did it. What did those first months look like? KG: We are still in the process of transitioning, juggling both our finance and designer careers. It is difficult but certainly possible, as we have been doing this for the past three years. We started with a solid vision but there were many steps before we made this vision a reality. It took tremendous amount of time and effort to research and build each component of our collection- from finding the right manufacturing partner to building a clear message of our brand. Diving into this new venture has been challenging and rewarding at the same time. CM: Your bags are exquisite. How do you come up with these designs? Is it a create-as-you-go kind of thing or do you have a very specific design in mind before you start? KG: We had an overarching theme inspired by both modern architecture and art deco. The straight lines
55
CO MP O SU R E MA G AZI N E.COM
and symmetry were the leading elements in our debut collection. For some of the models we had a pretty clear idea of the designs but others we had to redesign multiple times until we were both satisfied with the final prototypes. CM: The leathers you use are such high quality. Where do you get your materials from? What goes into the process of choosing those providers? KG: We spent significant amount of time researching tanneries that not only produced high quality leathers but also followed an eco-friendly process. We chose to work with an established tannery in Istanbul, Turkey that has great reputation working with famous fashion brands. We visited the tannery and observed the entire process. One of the things that really impressed us was that they used special techniques and finishes to create a desired depth of color without sacrificing leather’s natural softness and glow. We felt very confident in their expertise and work ethic.
CM: You’ve often referred to an architectural style to your bags. Can you take us into that? Does one of you have a background in it? How do you think this enhances the design? KG: We do not have an architectural background but we both have a special connection to it. Kamola: My grandfather was an accomplished architect who received many accolades during his career. His work had a strong influence on me, which formed my vision and helped enhance our designs. Krasimira: As a child I lived in different counties and admired the various architectural styles which later on became one of the inspirations to our designs. CM: The handbag market is a highly competitive one. I know this may be difficult to pinpoint, but could you try and describe what it is about Kristina George that allowed you to stand out above the rest? KG: We have bold and distinctive designs that are also practical and versatile. We used the highest quality materials for our bags –from the impeccable calfskin leather, custom made gold plated hardware, hand-cut crystals to the inside lining and custom gift boxes, every single part was handpicked by us. We also believe that we have a unique story because of our unconventional background in the fashion world. It shows that once you find your true passion, there is really nothing that can stop you from pursuing your dreams. CM: You website describes the bags as ‘encompassing both the practical luxury and evening glamour attitude of the modern woman.’ We love the sentiment. Can you take us a bit deeper into it? Who is the modern woman in your eyes? KG: Our mission has been to create bold and luxurious handbags that are also part of your everyday life, and not something that just sits in
your closet. The modern woman views fashion as a part of her life, her style is distinctive and graceful. She is always looking for the unique accessory that will compliment her captivating and confident character. She is selective and demands the utmost quality. CM: You’ve been best friends since college, adding an endearing camaraderie and friendship to the line. Did you always think you would end up collaborating? We’re so glad you did! KG: We always wanted to do something together and we always knew that it would be in the fashion industry. It was natural for us to start this collaboration because we have similar fashion taste, complete trust in each other and a passion to design. CM: You introduced your first line in 2014. Where are you guys now? How has the company changed and developed since then? Is it still just you two? KG: Yes, we launched in the fall of 2014 and our main focus has been to raise brand awareness. It is still the two of us and many sleepless nights but it has been an incredible experience. A new industry also means building a new network. We have met wonderful people in this industry that embrace emerging designers and that has been very rewarding. There are many more people we would love to showcase our collection to and we hope it will happen this year. Visit kristinageorge.com to see their entire collection!

CM: What was it like growing up in Texas? What inspired you to start your singing career? HO: Texas was awesome. I’m so glad I got to experience public high school like a normal teenager while also getting an opportunity to pursue my dreams in music and film. I was inspired to sing at the age of nine after listening to Whitney Houston and Celine Dion CDs growing up. CM: What was it like to be in a music group assembled by Simon Cowell? The group was called Lakoda Rayne that did country pop music - would you say that is the style of music you most enjoy? HO: It was difficult to accept the idea of being put into a group at first since I had always been a solo artist, but getting to be a part of something bigger than myself really helped me grow. Lakoda Rayne was the first time I had a chance to look at country pop music in a different way; in a way that I could picture myself doing it professionally. CM: Do you have any current music projects? You

Like any other art form, you want to make sure it’s right before you put it out there. CM: You mentioned there is no title for it right now, but if you could give it a title, what would it be? HO: Love Sick. That’s the name of one of the songs on the album and it really defines the summer that I was writing this EP. CM: Do you have a favorite music lyric from a song that you love? HO: “Merry, merry quite contrary, we get bored so we get married. Just like dust we settle in this town. On this broken merry go round.” -Kacey Musgraves. CM: Outside of music and acting, are there any other projects that you’re passionate about?
HO: It’s not that crazy, honestly. I didn’t know a ton of things about the 80’s when I started the show, but the writing really helps me get into the mindset. I love working on the show so much. I’ve learned a ton about that decade now.
HO: I have been focusing a lot on writing and proceeding with my roommate, Ryan Hutchins, who is a really talented cinematographer. We wrote a short film together and are working on a web series, too. It’s all very light and fun, but hopefully we can have some content to put out soon.
CM: You wrapped your 2nd season and it was announced that “The Goldbergs” was picked up for a 3rd season, congrats! What kind of developments can we see with your character Erica? HO: Well Erica originally wasn’t supposed to sing, but I talked the producers into letting that happen because I love music so much. Hopefully you can expect more signing and

HO: I really believe in helping those who have been there for me since the beginning, and both of these short films were produced by friends of mine that I’ve known for a while, who have always supported me. I wanted to do my part in supporting them by being a part of their films. I play completely different characters in both which has been fun. In one I play a cheating girlfriend, the other I play a modern day Joan of Arc. I’m just doing what I can to get more acting experience and work with all different kinds of people.

CM: What is one message that you want people to know about you? HO: I am all about supporting and guiding young women in my generation. I believe in empowering women, while also teaching them to respect themselves and their bodies by being modest. I try to speak up for my generation by being honest and real.

he’s the TV darling you met time and time again. Effortlessly charming, beautifully poised and wielding a smile that melts our hearts, Julie Benz stands behind an impressive body of work. A fan favorite since her breakout role as Darla in Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Julie has kept us in our seats as Rita Bennett in Dexter and most recently as Mayor Amanda Rosewater in Syfy’s Defiance. “I’ve been fortunate to play some very strong,

dynamic and complex women,” she says of her favorite characters. Indeed, over the years some of Julie’s roles have become a source of inspiration to her fans – like Rita’s character in Dexter, who comes out of a difficult relationship, but remains hopeful for a happy ending with the elusive Mr. Perfect. Rita’s situation had resonated with women in similar positions, who wrote to Julie about the impact it [Rita’s character] had on their lives. This type of empathy and whenever possible, universal appeal, are exactly the character

qualities Julie looks for when selecting her next role. “I love characters that are complex and deeply flawed, but still have courage and hope when faced with their own humanity; characters that are pushed to their breaking point and have to overcome tremendous odds just to live [out] each day.” As a female actor in her 40’s, Julie knows a thing or two about facing challenges of her own. “I’m 43 years old and it’s definitely hard to find a female character that doesn’t fall into the ‘mother-wife-victim’ role,” she says. Which is why Amanda’s character in Defiance is so appealing to Julie, “Amanda is a strong, badass female who is extremely complex and deeply flawed. She has her own demons that she battles, but she’s not defined by a relationship to a man. We see her very clearly on her own. She’s capable and smart, but not perfect. She’s vulnerable and makes mistakes and she can love, but she has more going on than just her relationship with a man,” she adds. While Julie can appreciate roles that are on the traditional ‘mother-wifevictim’ end of the spectrum (her character in Dexter certainly falls into that category), characters like Amanda present a unique and refreshing challenge.
her out to play Darla (a character who would become one of the most evil vampires on television), Julie’s career switched tracks to drama. Despite her success, Julie admits that comedy is where her heart lies after all and she hopes to return to it in future work. “Comedy is tough, it requires timing and precision, but also improvisation. It pushes the comfort zone boundaries of an actor because you can’t phone in a comedic performance!” It comes as no surprise that Julie is not one to phone in on anything related to her craft. She stumbled onto acting when a bad injury forced her to retire from ice-skating. To fill the void, Julie’s mother took her to an acting seminar where she met the man who is still her manager today! The rest is history. Even now, Julie finds every part of the process rewarding, even auditioning. “So many people say to me ‘I can’t believe you still go on auditions, you should be offer only.’ I always say ‘Why wouldn’t I go on an audition? It’s an opportunity to be an actor – to act!’ I would rather go to an audition and act in front of a bunch of producers who aren’t really interested in what I’m doing, than sit on my couch and say that I’m an actor,” she says.
“I’ve been fortunate to play some very strong, dynamic and complex women”
In the same vein, Julie looks forward to challenging herself with more comedic roles. Before she became known as a dramatic actress, her work had been primarily concentrated in comedy. However, after Joss Whedon plucked

Julie admits that rejection can be tough, and as someone who has been in the business for some time, she’s familiar with the challenges that young actors today have to face. But she stands by the belief that you get the roles you are meant to have, and, at the end of the day, she has faith

in the Universe. She insists, “Any time there has been a roadblock or a challenge, the universe has pointed me in a better direction. After “Rita’s” death on Dexter, I was devastated, but the day after the Dexter finale aired I was offered an arc on Desperate Housewives. I was able to work alongside women I had admired for a long time, on a show that I loved, doing comedy! My two months on that show were a dream come true, and I believe that was a sign that the Universe was looking out for me!” By the looks of her impressive list of on-screen credits, this mantra has served Julie well, and will hopefully continue to do so as she contemplates dabbling in directing. “Everyone tells me I should direct - I guess I like telling people what to do!” she says. “Directing would be an interesting challenge and one that I would be open to. In today’s landscape, it’s good to create work for yourself and keep yourself open to other ways of expressing your art.” And with the gender equality climate starting to slowly shift in the right direction, Julie believes that there will be more opportunities for female directors and actors in the future. “Twenty years ago, the crew on a film set would mostly be made up of men, now you see women in what was deemed the male-dominated areas of the crew, the grip and electrics department, the camera department, and the sound department. We actually had our first female director this year on Defiance, Mairzee Almas! She’s an awesome director, who just so happens to be a woman,” she states. Like most women, on and off the screen, Julie has brushed against gender inequality more than once in her career. “Of course I’ve experienced it personally,” she says, “I’m a woman!” However, this starlet is anything but fazed by her experiences. “We are making progress and we will continue to make progress. It’s a good sign that we are openly
having discussions about it and we have to continue to make noise and take action.” Call it perseverance, or determination, but this kind of optimism has served Julie very well over the years. In fact, when she was 16 and attending one of the best acting programs in the country at Carnegie Mellon University, a teacher informed her that she would never become successful as an actor because her speaking voice was horrible. Instead of bending under the weight of the teacher’s opinion, Julie recognized that what makes actors unique, in her case it was her voice, carries both a negative and positive reaction. “I knew my voice had a unique quality, and some people love it and others hate it, but it’s what makes me, ME! It makes me different and memorable.” With this in mind, she chose to rise above the critique and forge on. “I had the belief and faith in myself to recognize that the teacher’s issue with my voice was her issue and not mine. If you truly love to act, don’t let the chatter get in the way.” Today, if she’s not kicking butt on the set of the third season of Defiance, or filming Lionsgate’s gothic horror film, Havenhurst and the mystery thriller, Circle, she’s happily planning her summer back in Los Angeles with her husband Rick Orosco and their pups. We asked her how she’s able to do it all and still maintain a happy marriage and she gushed that the key for them has been being consciously present for one another. They also never find themselves apart for more than two weeks, she says. “We travel a lot and spend a lot of time in airports, but it’s worth it!” It sounds like Julie knows a thing or two about finding the right balance in her busy career and family life. That comes as no surprise to us as we’re convinced this leading lady can do anything.

The Piece Collective Nestled in a welcoming cottagestyle building on LA’s famous Abbot Kinney Blvd, this charming, one of a kind boutique is a must visit.
CM: The Piece Collective is the perfect description of what we encountered upon entering your store. So much variety with each piece bringing its own unique touch, yet still having a sense of connectedness. Tell us how your concept was born! The Piece Collective: The concept for The Piece Collective was born when we saw an opening in retail for light, interesting, non-cluttered pieces that genuinely speak for themselves. We wanted to convey the same feeling you have when you walk into a store and pick one piece that needs to go home with you and you covet. We wanted each piece to allow you to have that feeling.
pieces out in the world and to be pigeon held by one idea is tragic. We travel a lot and meet some amazing artists everywhere. We find products anywhere and everywhere, we even find product through our customers! Someone can come in from France, Sweden, even Morocco and we ask them about their fabulous pieces and through this organic exchange we meet great artists that we later carry in our store!
CM: You speak of the customer being able to experience ‘the curation of worldly adornments’. Can you speak more on that notion? How are you able to offer this?
CM: It’s so clear that real thought is given to each piece and collection brought to the store. How do you go about finding them?
The Piece Collective: We noticed many stores today are focused on “local” design and we really felt that it was a little limiting. There are so many special
The Piece Collective: The feeling is always the same in the sense that we always search for well-made, interesting and special pieces. There is no real thought but there is intention and feelings behind the buy and when all the pieces come in, they somehow all want to sit next to each other. CM: Abbot Kinney is such a destination for trend setting and cutting edge of style. How are you able to stand out amongst the many other boutiques? The Piece Collective: We feel that we are able to stand out because we are not over saturated in apparel, and by the types of pieces we carry. We only carry 4 apparel brands and the rest of the store is object, jewelry and gift items. We are really personal and care.

CM: Are the collections The Piece Collective offers heavily influenced by general fashion trends? The Piece Collective: Not really at all. We don’t really pay attention to trends here. We pay attention to the environment and the customer. We want to bring the feeling of Venice into the space in a more elevated way, as Venice has become just that! CM: It was such a wonderful experience even just browsing your store. Bright, welcoming, and clearly planned with care. Is the customer experience something you guys find important to the boutique venture? The Piece Collective: Absolutely. Whether you buy something or you’re just taking a stroll, we want you to feel welcome and enjoy the pieces. The main daily goal is to have the customer leave with a smile above all. CM: With all the different collections that come in, do you find the store returning to the same artists and designers every now and then? Or is it ever-changing selections and sources? The Piece Collective: We definitely have some reoccurring artists as their collections are just getting stronger and we want to continue to support them and them us. We do however love to switch it up and always keep things fresh and new and that means new artists and pieces. CM: You are co-owners but also newlyweds-
congratulations! What’s the history there? How did you meet and how did you decide to open The Piece Collective together? The Piece Collective: Thank you! Leran swept me off my feet! We met through mutual friends and after only a couple months of dating he asked me if I wanted to open a store with him. I thought he was crazy but realized shortly after that he was inviting to me take the most incredible journey alongside him! The Piece Collective is located at 1629 Abbott Kinney Venice, California.
