Vandy Cattle 4th Annual Bull Sale

Page 1

WELCOME VANDY CATTLE

from

Welcome to our 4th Annual Bull Sale. Thank you for taking the time to view our offering, and thank you to our customers for your past and present support!

This past year was certainly memorable in our lives as we met a lot of new milestones within our operation, most memorable was the birth of our second son Kreed. Kreed entered the world earlier than expected, the timing was impeccable as he arrived during our Female Sale this past October. In the moment, it was a much more stressful experience than it had to be, but we are so thankful for yet another healthy baby boy. Waylon and Kreed are both such a blessing in our lives.

One of the most noteworthy topics in the cattle industry is the record prices we are experiencing. Every week this past fall it seemed like we hit new record highs, far exceeding anyone’s expectations. I think it’s fair to say it is due time we get paid for our product and our labor, and this cow deal looks very positive for the coming years. In the high times we find ourselves in, quality cattle are topping the markets, and it is important to not become complacent in our breeding strategies, but stay focused on quality and efficiency.

“The realization of performance must lie upon the foundation of the mother cow.” This sums up our breeding program. We place a high priority in our selection criteria on feet and udders, structural soundness, fleshing ability, fertility, docility, longevity, and most importantly maternal instinct. Our females must do these things with minimum maintenance and no supplementation, in a management style that mimics the average commercial operation. We do not “baby” our cows, but rather expect them to thrive in this environment on variable forage quality throughout the course of the year. In this business performance traits are something we are very good at measuring, and it is very important, however we try to put an emphasis on the traits we aren’t quite as good at measuring. Traits such as maternal instinct, udder design, calf vigor, pelvic shape and fertility are often not as measurable but are equally important. The lack of these traits cost you time and money, and the presence of these traits ultimately get you to your end goal in a more cost-effective and labor efficient manner. Our industry is a very competitive marketplace, and the strength of your cowherd is ultimately what will set you apart from your peers and help your bottom line!

We think that this years bull offering is our strongest to date. We work tirelessly to source the absolute best genetics and utilize them in an intensive breeding program through Artificial Insemination and Embryo Transfer. Every bull in our sale meets a high criteria on quality, but also must be backed by a dam that meets all the criteria that we set out for her. The three breeds we offer, we utilize together with great confidence in our own commercial herd. We believe that these three breeds are complimentary of each other in a cross-breeding

ROMANS 8:28

scenario to maximize profitability. Buying a herd bull can impact your herd for at least the next ten years, we do our best to source the genetics on our end to impact your program positively.

Buying a herd bull is a large investment, and we take a great deal of responsibility in developing our bulls in a way that promotes the longevity of your investment. Our bulls are raised as calves with no additional supplementation, we do not creep feed. They are raised only on mother’s milk and grass. From weaning to sale day our bulls are developed slowly, they are fed a conservative oat-based ration, free-choice grass hay, and no silage. We pail feed the bulls daily which allows us to control feed intake and monitor the bulls regularly, as well as promote docility. Our objective is to develop these bulls in a manner that promotes bone and tissue development, rather than promoting extreme growth and fat development. We target a rate of gain that resembles that of which they achieved on side of their mothers. By targeting a steady rate of growth and maturity we achieve two things; we ensure optimum rumen health and proper foot and leg development, both of which procure the longevity of your investment. We also feel that by developing bulls in this fashion, the data we provide is much more accurate and relevant to the commercial cattleman. We expect our bulls to go out and work, meet the shelf-life you require, and be a sound investment for your program.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to you for viewing our offering! We certainly think there is a high quality group of bulls here and would love for you to come to the ranch for a visit. Do not hesitate to give us a call about our offering! We would enjoy learning about your operation and look forward to assisting you in the search for your next herd sire. -Justin AND WE KNOW THAT IN ALL THINGS GOD

BROTHERS

LOTS 1-4

-We are certainly excited to lead off our sale with these four full ET brothers. We like these Angus bulls a great deal for their muscle shape, bold rib, and easy fleshing build. This mating lends a lot of predictability as many ¾ brothers have went on to do great things in our customers programs, and many ¾ sisters have made a mark in our program. Lot 1 is a low birthweight option we think would be suitable for breeding heifers, but this uniform group of 4 are certainly all soggy made, densely constructed, with added foot quality and heel depth. Lot 2, 3, & 4 made up our Angus Bull Pen at the Medicine Hat Beef Pen Show.

-Much like his sire, DUFF REAL DEAL 19115 is siring cattle with added substance and maternal merit. He is backed by an incredible dam.

-These bulls mother, 135A has been a staple in our Angus program. 135A consistently transmits udder quality, power, and hair into her progeny. Her foot size and quality is evident in her offspring.

N536 is sound structured, has an incredible hair coat, and great scrotal development. Genetically, this bull combines some of the breeds most elite in his pedigree.

-N536 is sired by the popular VISION DR PHIL 2025 bull of Griswold’s. DR PHIL is siring cattle with added look and quality. He derives from the renowned Phyllis cow family that needs no introduction in the Angus breed.

-The dam of Lot 5, 002H is a perfect uddered Lookout daughter. Her first 3 calves have highlighted our bull sale each year with son’s working at Tiny Angus Ranch, Brian Sebastien’s, and Russell Taylor’s.

N548 has herd bull character, combines muscle, length, and forerib, with a soft rib cage and smooth pattern. To combine these traits with such a high birth to weaning spread, in a red purebred package, and Homo Polled, suggests that this bull will have an impact within this breed. -This trio of bulls is the result of a flush we purchased from Eastview Maines in Minnesota. What a stout set of brothers. Lot 16 was on display at Agribition and was a member of our Maine Pen of Three at Medicine Hat, Lot 17 is one of the youngest bulls in the sale but might be one of my favorite in the whole offering, and Lot 18 was our heaviest weaning Maine-Anjou bull. All three of these brothers are explosive muscled, huge topped, and set down on enormous bone and foot! These bulls are so flexible and athletic, they get out and travel effortlessly, impressive when you are carrying that much mass. These brothers lend versatility to any Maine-Anjou program being an outcross to Garth, All Me, I-80, and Databank derivatives. Take your pick on this set of red-gene carrier, High Maine full brothers.

-We purchased BKMT FIRST EDITION 415F ET in 2019 where he was lead-off bull in the Champion Pen of Three at Denver. First Edition transmits power and performance into his progeny, added scrotal circumference, and extra foot and bone size. First Edition serviced cows in his 7th consecutive breeding season this past year!

-TLAC MISS SCARLETT 414H ET is an impressive female. She was campaigned successfully across the U.S. in 2021 by Rylee Folkerts, and was admired for her attractive design and unmatched soundness. Last year her son was high seller at the Denver Maine-Anjou Sale for Eastview Maines!

-An incredible calving ease prospect! M555 is smooth built through his shoulder and skull, yet possesses muscle and mass through his rear body. His wedge shape design, and elite presence has made him popular in this pen. We like how this bull gets out and travels and has a perfect set of running gear. This MaineTainer bull is littered with great genetics through both sides of his pedigree, and is sure to sire high quality offspring in a low birthweight package. Homo polled. -BBR FX MAY WE ALL 6D is siring high quality cattle across the nation. His daughters are leaving a legacy all their own as productive mother cows.

-Lot 20’s dam is a first calf heifer, her perfect udder structure comes as no surprise. She’s a daughter of Dignified 102J, a son of Duff Napoleon 232. Her dam is a top daughter of VNDY Jameson 728E, the full brother to Black Label and our 717E Donor. The Patty cow family is best known for their longevity.

TESTIMONIAL FROM HANSEN CATTLE

“We have always admired the genetics at Vandy Cattle and what they’ve accomplished in the show ring. We are passionate about raising quality cattle and always seeking what fits best for our program, whether it’s a female or a high quality bull. We purchased a ¾ Maine bull from Vandy a couple years ago. With his first calf crop on the ground he sure hit it deep for us! The females are exhibiting excellent style, body depth, and growth! Our March & April born steer calves we sold the earliest we ever have on Sept. 7, they averaged 620 pounds, and the order buyer commented “Those are the best set of black feeder calves I’ve ever seen!” They were all sired by VNDY Game Time 313L. We have used 3 different breeds to develop our cow base, Maine, Angus, and Simmental. I honestly believe that if you have an Angus or Angus cross cow base, you owe it to yourself to give a Maine-Anjou bull a try! The Maine-Anjou cattle add value, and add characteristics such as vigour, foot and bone structure, haircoat, and performance on feed. They are cattle that can handle our harsh weather!”

-Baldy time! This Bankroll son is loaded with performance, big boned, and big nutted. His pedigree has a shot of 8543U both top and bottom, and goes back to Elegance 239. This stout critter is certain to put some payweight in his calves, in a sound structured, big footed, and attractive package. A maternal brother to this bull was a high seller in last year’s sale to Todd Rau. Homo Polled.

-W/C BANKROLL 811D is a breed legend. His progeny have been some of the most sought after in the country, producing both sons and daughters of high quality.

-034H, the dam of Lot 20 is a direct daughter of W/C RELENTLESS 32C and a full sister to Lot 22. She is tight uddered, with perfect teat placement, and great footed. Her bull calf last year was a high seller in our sale.

-A pen favorite here. A full brother to the dam of Lot 21, he is a Relentless out of our Elegance 239 female. He may be the youngest bull in the offering, but he boasts the highest 205 Weight of the whole group. This bull is stout featured, massive in his build, and soggy ribbed. N584 is long spined and advanced in his testicular development. Structural integrity and foot quality is a must, and Lot 22 checks that box. The maternal predictability in his pedigree makes us put a checkmark beside his lot number.

-W/C RELENTLESS 32C is a maternal legend within the breed. His daughters are known for exceptional udder quality and productivity.

-239Z is a cornerstone female in our operation. Her influence is scattered across many lots in this sale. She is currently 14 years old, carrying her 13th calf. Her feet have never been touched, her udder is as good today as it was 10 years ago, and her progeny have made a lasting impact in our program. She has many sons working in many different programs that we’ve sold over the years.

TESTIMONIAL FROM FRANKEN FARMS

“We purchased our first bulls from Vandy in 2017. We have since purchased 4 and keep going back. The longevity is top notch as they are still servicing our cowherd today. That makes us confident to keep back replacement heifers. Our boys always find a 4-H steer sired by one of our Vandy bulls, they catch your eye from start to finish. Good bulls from a great family!” -Franken Farms, Alex & Nicki Franken & Family, Glen Ewen, SK
