By KaTHy CHanG Cheryl Wurst recently got a phone call from Chief Anthony Luyber of the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office ahead of the annual Fallen Officers Memorial Service on May 13. On March 28, 1975, her cousin, officer William C. Wurst of the Hainesport Township Police Department, was shot and killed by a sniper. He was 24. “I contacted her for the purpose of not just to think about the tragic incident of the day but rather the impact of officer Wurst’s death on life for her and her family and their efforts to heal and move forward,” Luyber recalled. Cheryl and William were the same age and part of the same circle of close friends. “She said even when spending time with those friends years later, she felt that void left by his death,” Luyber learned. “She also shared that it took See CEREMONY, Page 8

Nick Raynor, Ryan Fryc, Lucas Klama and Aidan Peters were fairly confident that they could advance out of the Central Jersey Group 2 championships. They did better than that. Seeded fourth, the Bordentown Regional High School boys 4x400 relay put together its finest race of the year for an exciting finish to the final race of sectionals. The Scotties won the event in a season-best 3:30.80. “Exciting is an understatement,” said Raynor, who ran the first leg. “It was something that none of us were honestly expecting going into it. I mean, we were ranked fourth going in, so we were not expecting to come out winning the whole thing.” The 4x400 relay is one of four events in which Bordentown advanced to the Group 2 state championships. The top six finishers in each event move on to the Group 2 meet that was scheduled for May 30-31. Klama ran a personal-record 1:59.89 for fourth in the 800 meters, See RELAYS, Page 10
