2025 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY
The Community Foundation of Broward is one of the more than 900 “community foundations” across the country.
Community foundations are grantmaking public charities that provide support to make life better for people living in the areas they serve. They are driven by the simple idea that by teaming up, local philanthropists create greater impact than by going it alone. Community foundations build endowment to support their community’s long-term needs.
Donors partner with community foundations to enlist their local knowledge and philanthropic expertise. Community foundations pool resources and connect donors to innovative, impactful nonprofits that offer opportunities for their support to make a lasting difference. Community Foundations shepherd endowments, ensuring their donors’ impact goes on for generations to come.
Each year, community foundations across the country provide billions of dollars in support to address a variety of immediate and long-term needs – creating impact today and shaping a brighter future.

Thank you to The Harry T. Mangurian, Jr. Foundation, Inc. for sponsoring this publication.
The Community Foundation of Broward champions local philanthropy to transform and uplift the community we love.
We help philanthropists be more strategic and impactful with their giving. We provide community leadership to identify pressing local needs and forge collaborations that make a lasting difference. We help nonprofits sustain and grow the critical services they provide through training and other resources available at our Broward Center for Nonprofit Excellence. And we build permanent, endowed resources to support the community we love forever.
It all starts with the visionary individuals, families and organizations who partner with us to create personalized charitable funds that fuel ongoing support for causes that mean the most to them. We safeguard their funds and help them grow through careful investment. We identify innovative, dynamic grantmaking opportunities to support our “fundholders’” charitable passions. Through the years, we make sure their charitable dollars are always used as intended.
Our ability to pool resources and forge collaborations amplifies our fundholders’ charitable impact. Through the power of endowment, we build permanent, sustainable sources of support to tackle our fast-growing community’s needs today and for generations to come.

There’s so much to love about our community. Broward County is home to friendly people, thriving economic centers, a vibrant arts scene, gorgeous beaches and weather that is the envy of visitors from around the world.

Yet, we know the community we love still faces challenges and needs our support to reach its full potential. That’s why the Community Foundation of Broward is proud to foster Broward’s culture of philanthropy.
Grants from the Community Foundation champion student advancement, help hardworking families in need, fuel the arts, advance equity, protect the environment, expand access to health care and much more. It’s all made possible by our partnerships with philanthropists stepping up to transform lives and invest in innovation.
Local philanthropy is a powerful way to show your love for the place you call home. We made “Lead with Love” our slogan because love for community guides everything we do at the Community Foundation.
As this annual report shows, there is a lot to love about our impact during Fiscal Year 2025. We granted another $20 million to nonprofits providing critical local services that make life better today and shape a brighter future. Our Broward Center for Nonprofit Excellence, now in its third year, delivers training and resources to sustain and grow the missions of nonprofits that touch lives across our community. And with nearly 600 charitable funds now shepherded by the Community Foundation, we are forging new partnerships and growing resources that will uplift our community for generations to come.
We hope our “Lead with Love” message inspires more people to join us in the years ahead. Together, we can accomplish anything for the community we love.
Jennifer O’Flannery Anderson, Ph.D. President/CEO

In 2022, the Community Foundation of Broward created the Broward Center for Nonprofit Excellence to provide training and other tools that sustain and strengthen nonprofits’ vital community impact.
The “Nonprofit Center” has quickly become a go-to resource for nonprofit professionals, volunteers and supporters.
Housed at the Community Foundation and operated by the Foundation’s expert team, the Nonprofit Center:
• Provides training and other continuing education
• Supports nonprofit capacity building and core mission work
• Features a website with easy-to-use online tools and information

In addition, visitors to the Nonprofit Center website benefit from virtual classes, a resource database, nonprofit directory and other online tools.

program, collaborations to help nonprofits attract diverse and engaged board members, expanded online and in-person training sessions and much more.
An early $5 million matching grant commitment from the Frederick A. DeLuca Foundation jump-started fundraising and helped launch Nonprofit Center operations. Less than three years later, the Community Foundation secured $5 million in additional support to establish a $10
million endowment – ensuring permanent, sustainable support for the Nonprofit Center. This endowed support enables the Nonprofit Center to adapt and respond over time to the changing needs of local nonprofits. It’s all made possible by partnerships with philanthropists committed to championing the vital work of Broward’s nonprofits.

“We are empowering local nonprofits – big and small – to build skills and broaden their capacity to help make life better in Broward,” Nonprofit Center Director Cathy Brown said.

$480,000+ in fiscal year 2025 support for convenings, outreach, advocacy, youth support programs and more
The Community Foundation is committed to building a stronger, more connected Broward where everyone can succeed. Through leadership, philanthropy and collaboration, we work to remove barriers, expand opportunities, overcome systemic injustices and strengthen our culturally diverse community so that all residents can thrive.

More outreach since 2022 has resulted in a 71 percent increase in charitable funds established by Black philanthropists. We welcomed Board Member Burnadette Norris-Weeks and her husband Aaron Weeks as new Community Builders – philanthropists who create endowed funds of $1 million or more. In August, we partnered with the Urban League of Broward County and the Children’s Services Council of Broward to host the Black Philanthropy Month celebration.

During 2025, we again teamed up with The Our Found Foundation to provide $360,000 in new grants to support social justice and racial equity for LGBTQ residents. This grantmaking partnership combines our resources and expertise to foster a more informed, inclusive and equitable environment for the LGBTQ community. Ten nonprofits received grants ranging from $29,000 to $50,000 each to support the LGBTQ community through legal aid, the arts, youth programs, advocacy, education and more.

Hispanic Unity of Florida helps provide childcare, find homes, open doors to new careers, start businesses, overcome food insecurity, access health care, achieve citizenship and more. Grants made possible by fundholders committed to helping immigrants succeed have provided more than $1 million in support through the years to help people in our community become more self-sufficient.
Support beyond our Focus Areas
In addition to grantmaking for our local Focus Areas, the Community Foundation also partners with philanthropists who want to support other local causes as well as their charitable priorities across the country and around the world.

Throughout our history, we have partnered with fundholders to support animal rescue, medical care, habitat protection, pet adoptions and more to champion animal welfare. During 2025, that included grants supporting free spay and neutering services, a mobile veterinary wellness clinic, sanctuary and treatment for abandoned horses, care for injured wild animals and much more.

Cancer patients in Broward are gaining greater access to cuttingedge research and treatments thanks to new grants totaling $900,000. Spread over three years, this critical infusion of support helps scientists and researchers leading the Memorial Foundation’s Lung Cancer Biomarkers & Precision Therapy program and Nova Southeastern University’s Exosome-Based Immunotherapies for Melanoma program. Since 2016, the Community Foundation has invested more than $3 million in cancer-fighting research.

Our fundholders with endowed scholarship funds help students of all ages overcome financial barriers to higher education and career training. During 2025 we awarded more than $279,000 in scholarships to universities, trade schools and other institutions of higher learning in Florida and beyond. Scholarships available through the Community Foundation range from $1,000 to $5,000 per year and are renewable for four years of classes.
An endowment is a permanent investment fund created for a specific purpose, typically supporting nonprofit organizations or other charitable causes. You can create an endowed charitable fund at the Community Foundation to ensure sustainable support for your charitable priorities, for generations to come.
As a trusted fiduciary, the Community Foundation carefully invests your gift over time. A portion of the income is granted to causes that matter to you. The remainder is added to the principal, so your fund can grow and grant, forever.
Our expert finance staff works hand in hand with a top-notch independent investment consultant to safeguard and grow your endowed fund. We shepherd your fund through the years, ensuring that grants from your fund are always used as intended.
Through the power of endowment, the Community Foundation will always be here to manage your fund, tackle pressing local needs and take on future challenges that have yet to emerge. Your endowment lasts forever, so your impact lasts forever.

Partnering with the Community Foundation to create an endowed charitable fund ensures permanent, ongoing support for causes and nonprofit organizations that matter to you.

“If more people understood the benefit of philanthropy and giving through the Community Foundation, I think they would also understand the fact that you can actually build a legacy. You can actually have a gift that just keeps on giving.”
Burnadette Norris-Weeks, Board Member and Community Builder, who created an endowed fund in 2022

In 50 years, your endowed fund has produced more than $283,200 in grants and your fund balance reaches $128,323 – and keeps growing!
In 15 years, your endowed fund has produced more than $77,600 in grants and your fund balance is $107,768
After one year, your endowed fund produces $5,000 in grants and your fund balance is $100,500
“Because I believe strongly in how education can open up opportunities, I have set my endowed fund’s focus at the Community Foundation of Broward on helping to break the cycle of poverty through education and career readiness. With the experience and expertise of the Foundation’s team, I know it will be spent wisely for decades to come.” Colin W. Brown, Community Builder, who created an endowed fund in 2023

Fun opportunities to connect, learn and engage with our community.
‘Food

Fundholders, Legacy Society members and other Community Foundation supporters joined us for a “Food for Thought” excursion to Sawgrass Recreation Park in the Everglades. They got a firsthand look at how Foundation support helps local teachers and students learn more – and spread the word – about the importance of protecting the Everglades. See the “Food for Thought” video.

The 2025 Legacy Society Luncheon honored the visionaries whose bequests to the Community Foundation will shape a brighter future for the community they love. Our sailing-themed celebration showcased Community Foundation initiatives, such as the “Lead with Love” murals collaboration, and provided a wonderful chance to say “thank you” today to dedicated philanthropists whose future endowed gifts will help their community for generations to come.
See the Legacy Society Celebration video.

Our annual Community Builder Celebrations honor visionary philanthropists who partner with the Community Foundation to create endowed charitable funds of $1 million or more to shape a brighter future for Broward. In November 2024, we transformed the Museum of Discovery and Science into a take-a-walk-on-the-wildside-themed extravaganza to say “thank you” to our growing group of Community Builders.
See the Community Builder Celebration video.

We hosted local mayors and other municipal officials for an engaging discussion about how philanthropy can help shape stronger, more vibrant communities. These local leaders learned more about the work of the Community Foundation as well as ways for philanthropy to help make life better in Broward communities.

Trevor and Margie Fried’s love for their community runs deep, passed down from generations before them. It’s a love rooted in acts of kindness, compassion and empathy, which they have also instilled in their daughter, Leila. For them, true success isn’t measured in wealth, but in the impact they make on their community.
Trevor’s commitment to tzedakah – a Hebrew word that means doing what is right and giving to those in need – has been a guiding principle throughout his life, which aligns with many of Margie and Trevor’s commitments to the community.
For 20 years, they’ve volunteered locally, serving on philanthropic boards for organizations that support those in need, such as Gilda’s Club, Lambda Legal and Honor Flight South Florida. Leila has followed her parents’ lead, dedicating many hundreds of hours over the past several years to organizations such as HandsOn Broward and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital.
By creating an endowed charitable fund at the Community Foundation, the Fried family provides sustainable, permanent support for those impacted by injustice and intolerance, and to those in need.

“Giving is among the most satisfying things that I do. … There’s probably no organization in the county that has as much of an impact on the community and that’s really what attracted my wife, Margie, and I to the Community Foundation to begin with.” – Trevor Fried, Community Foundation Community Builder and Board member
For two generations, the Allen family has partnered with the Community Foundation to “pay it forward.”
It started with W. George Allen, an education and Civil Rights trailblazer, who became the first African American to graduate with a law degree from the University of Florida and who led the legal fights that helped desegregate public schools in Broward County and Hendry County.
George also championed local philanthropy by serving on the Community Foundation’s Board from 1990 to 1995, helping grow the Foundation during the pivotal first decade of its existence.
To carry on their father’s commitment to Broward, Jonathan and Tim Allen have partnered with the Community Foundation to create charitable funds that provide ongoing support for breaking down barriers to success. Through scholarships and other community support, the Allen family funds are furthering the family legacy of empowering others to achieve success.
Jonathan, the Community Foundation’s incoming Board Chair, has followed in his father’s footsteps by helping lead the local force for good that his father helped launch.

“The Community Foundation is our partner for paying it forward. You can see where your resources are growing. You can see where your resources are going. …Becoming a fundholder allows you to make a forever impact.” – Jonathan Allen, Community Foundation fundholder, Legacy Society member and incoming Board Chair

Cathy and James Donnelly are high school sweethearts who met in Canada and have forged a life together in Fort Lauderdale based on family, hard work, and giving back to the community they call home.
To say “thank you” to the community that embraced them, Cathy and James collaborate with nonprofit, business and community partners to enhance the lives of Broward’s most vulnerable residents. In addition, James has founded and endowed the Donnelly Real Estate and Property Management Program at NSU.
Partnering with the Community Foundation provides Cathy and James a team of philanthropic experts to help them navigate their personal giving – ensuring their generosity fuels solutions where needed the most. The Community Foundation amplifies their impact by pooling their resources with other likeminded philanthropists. By creating an endowed charitable fund at the Foundation, Cathy and James have ensured a sustainable, permanent source of support for the causes and organizations that matter most to them. Year after year, grants from their endowed fund help tackle food insecurity, mental health and much more. The Community Foundation’s stewardship of their endowed support will shape and improve the community they love, for generations to come.

“What a great way to have your wishes continue forever. … We have worked our whole lives supporting the community. I love that our work will continue forever through the Community Foundation.” – Cathy Donnelly who along with her husband James Donnelly, former Board Chair, is a Community Foundation Community Builder and Legacy Society member

Wisconsin native Edward Hashek retired to Broward County in 2012 with his longtime partner John Jors, looking for warmer weather and a diverse, welcoming community to call home.
Edward brought with him a passion for supporting the arts, which he considers “food for the soul.” He got involved in championing the arts in his adopted home because of his belief that the arts have the power to build community in dynamic and lasting ways.
He is a past president of Funding Arts Broward, a nonprofit that supports, sustains and enriches the arts in our community. And as a Board member for the Community Foundation, he helped guide our grantmaking and leadership efforts to increase local access to the arts.
Ed also gives back through the charitable fund he and John created at the Community Foundation. Grants made possible by their partnership with the Foundation support the Exceptional Theater Company’s program for teens, adults and seniors with disabilities; Hollywood Art and Culture Center community engagement programs; Brazilian Voices’ musical wellness performances at local assisted living and medical facilities; and other opportunities for the arts to uplift and connect.

“The people on the Board and the staff, have been incredible. I’m just so impressed with their passion, their commitment to what the Community Foundation stands for. … I look forward to seeing more of the great work that the Community Foundation has been doing.” – Edward Hashek, Fundholder and former Board member
Donations to the Community Foundation Mission Support Fund fuel the day-to-day work of the Community Foundation of Broward. This support for our mission and operations costs makes it possible for us to foster and grow Broward’s culture of philanthropy.
With your contribution to our mission support, you are welcomed into the “Deinhardt Society” – named in honor of our founders, Libby and Jack Deinhardt, who in 1984 launched the Community Foundation to ensure an ongoing source of leadership and philanthropic support that would always be there to help the community they loved.

We shepherd and grow their endowed funds through careful investment, ensuring permanent support for our Community Builders’ charitable passions. The $155 million in combined endowed gifts from these dedicated changemakers represents nearly half of the assets that fuel the Foundation’s grantmaking. For generations to come, grants made possible by our Community Builders will shape a brighter future and ensure their legacy of impact never ends.

Through the Foundation’s stewardship, the fund celebrating Sherry’s memory will always be there to support counseling, residential care, aid for struggling mothers and other Sheridan House ministries.

June Wise
June Wise, a self-proclaimed free spirit who wasn’t shy to speak her mind, used to say she liked animals better than people. Throughout her adventurous life, June’s charitable giving helped animals and protected the environment. By partnering with the Community Foundation to create The June Wise Fund, she established endowed, sustainable support for organizations that champion animals and the environment. With the Foundation to shepherd her fund, June’s impact will never end.

Learn more about our Community Builders

Our Nonprofit Endowment Partners create charitable funds at the Community Foundation to ensure reliable, ongoing support for their critical missions. We handle tax reporting, audits and other financial management duties so our nonprofit partners can focus on their work to make lives better in our community. We shepherd and grow their funds through careful investment so year after year they can count on dedicated support to fuel their missions.

Our “Nonprofit Community Builders” are visionary organizations whose endowed charitable funds at the Community Foundation have grown to $1 million or more. Enlisting our endowment expertise to achieve this impressive milestone creates permanent support for their critical work in our community, and inspires donor trust that they will be here for generations to come.

Longtime philanthropist Mary Porter joined our Legacy Society to ensure her support for the community she loved would ever end.
As a Legacy Society member, Mary was invited to Foundation events where she learned more about Broward’s challenges, the Foundation’s work and the powerful impact of local philanthropy. She shared her charitable goals with our expert team, which helped chart a plan for how her future endowed gift would be put to use.
In 2012, Mary made history when her $43 million bequest became our largest gift ever. Since then, we have worked on Mary’s behalf to find innovative opportunities for her endowed support to make a lasting difference.
Today, thanks to Mary’s foresight and generosity, kids at the new L.A. Lee YMCA/Mizell Community Center learn to swim, take a class or play basketball in a safe, nurturing place. Hardworking families have moved into affordably priced homes at Habitat for Humanity’s new Pompano Beach neighborhood. And in Sunrise, adults with special needs learn culinary career skills at Arc Broward’s teaching kitchen, which Mary’s support made possible.
Learn more about gift planning and the Legacy Society
Through her endowed gift to the Community Foundation, Mary’s legacy of impact will continue for generations.

Our Professional Advisors Council includes attorneys, CPAs, financial planners and other trusted advisors who collaborate with the Community Foundation to help their clients become more strategic and impactful with their giving. Advisors whose clients create charitable funds at the Community Foundation can join our Professional Advisors Council, which is invited to attend networking opportunities, continuing education sessions and special Foundation events. Together, we help achieve their clients’ charitable goals and shape a brighter future for Broward.

The Community Foundation is an outstanding Fiduciary with a more than 40-year track record of success stewarding philanthropic assets. Our expert finance staff works hand in hand with a top-notch independent investment consultant to safeguard charitable funds and grow our endowment. The Foundation’s team benefits from the guidance and oversight of our Board of Directors, an audit committee and an investment committee.
Clearly defined responsibilities, independent decision-making and separation of duties are among the ways we remain a strong and stable Fiduciary – providing peace of mind to the donors who partner with us to create the charitable funds that support their philanthropy.
The Foundation’s investment philosophy is to earn a return that allows for meaningful grants on behalf of our fundholders, while growing the principal of endowed charitable funds for increased giving power over time. Our investment objectives include:
• Grow principal of endowed funds.
• Achieve long-term returns in excess of grantmaking and the rate of inflation.
• Earn investment returns that meet or exceed performance benchmarks.
• Carefully balance risk vs return.
