We have recently published a report looking at learner’s needs and English language courses across Somerset is now available. Over 200 people who do not speak English as their first language took part in an online survey. Their responses highlighted opportunities to extend online provision, Conversation Clubs, childcare, transport, and IT support for learners.
Consultation with the tutors in colleges, adult education and community groups providing ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) suggests that learners are well motivated and value opportunities to practice and interact with English speakers. Joining in with other local activities involving the whole family also helps learners settle into their new community.
Recommendations from the consultation include the formation of a Somerset ESOL Network for course providers and tutors to discuss how best to extend provision and improve learners’ experience.
