Q&A with Ryan Maloney of Julio’s Liquors
Julio’s Liquors is a very unique store. What is your vision for it? Since purchasing the business, I’ve had a vision to create something that is so much more than a retail store. I view the store as a venue to provide education, build relationships and create a culture around the products we carry. People don’t realize that we are one of the leading liquor retailers in the nation and much of that is due to the way we connect with our customers and vendors. You seem to be interested in partnering with others in the industry...why is that? In keeping with the theme of collaboration and education, we partner with many of our vendors. In some cases it’s to educate our customers, in others it’s an opportunity to bring forth rare or specialty products not generally available. In one recent initiative we are partnering with a number of wine producers to create signature wines exclusive to our store. Keep in mind, these are not just relabeled as many stores do...these are our unique, exclusive wines. What products do you think are going to really grow in popularity?
Ryan Maloney, Owner of Julio’s Liquors, Westborough
The growth in specialty whiskies and craft brews has been nothing short of spectacular. We are the largest sellers of both types of products in the area. Now, we are looking at “Craft Spirits” as the potential booming market. No matter what products come along, it is our goal to be the educational source that allows our customers to be more knowledgeable about the products they buy. How do you account for the popularity of specialized whiskies? It has something to do with a maturing of tastes. As people mature they start to look for products that have a history and a culture behind them. Whiskey culture is a fascinating world and I have gone to great lengths to become an expert in the field. People with an interest in whiskey would be interested to know that I have been inducted into the Keeper of the Quaich Society in Scotland, one of whisky’s highest honors. I also started a group for aficionados known as the Loch and Key Society. Those interested should visit our website at www.lochandkey.com. Do you see growth in the craft beer market? Oh for sure. Currently we carry about 2,000 craft beers but there are new ones coming online weekly. One of the new trends in micro brewing is “hyper-local” with beers being produced in your own town or very close by. We plan to be the “go to” place in the Northeast for craft beer selection and education. Julio’s is really known as a regional destination ...how did you become a leader?
Specialty foods, accessories and an extensive wine selection, including a tasting room.
I never stop marketing the store and exposing it to new markets. In 2018 I was recognized by the industry magazine, Market Watch as the “Marketer of the Year” and in 2019 we were named a Whisky icon store by Whisky Magazine as the best single location Whisky Store in the country. But beyond that, I am passionate about the culture we have created and I plan to keep building on it...it’s not unusual for us to get a large number of people visiting us weekly from adjoining states or even hundreds of miles away. I always want people to realize what a true “destination store” they have right in their own back yard.

Dear Family, Friends & Clients...
Warm Wishes from our family to yours!
“Karen was very knowledgeable and professional. She had excellent local contacts when I needed recommendations. Karen was patient and calm when I wasn’t so much so. She talked me through computer applications that were new since the last time I sold a house. Karen was very supportive through the whole process of selling my home. I enjoyed working with Karen and recommend her to anyone local who is selling their property.” ❧❧❧
“I chose Karen to sell my home as she is the queen of Northborough. The house was listed and offer accepted in 2 days. Closing process went smoothly and Karen was able to assist in a pinch with certain matters. Karen is knowledgeable, professional, and is good at what she does.”
A
s we approach the holiday season, I feel extremely blessed when reflecting on the past. Twenty-six years ago, I began my career as a real estate agent. I never could have imagined the amazing journey that was ahead. I have met incredible individuals along the way, many of whom I feel honored to now call friends. This adventure has seen the growth of my four children, the marriage of four children, and the birth of my two grandchildren. Throughout the years there have been several discussions about the key to success. Though there are many different opinions, I truly believe that the real key to my success is all of you; my clients, friends and family. I want to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you. I am deeply touched by the kind words, referrals, loyalty, and constant support that I have been shown over the years and want you to know that I sincerely appreciate everything you have done. I look forward to the opportunity to assist you with any of your real estate needs in the years to come. Best wishes for a happy & healthy holiday season and a wonderful year filled with laughter, love, and happiness.

St. Mary’s Credit Union was established more than 100 years ago by a group of immigrants seeking loans so they could purchase coal to provide heat for their families. Today, members of some of those immigrant families sit on the organization’s Board of Directors, which ensures that the credit union’s mission, “to be here for our members,” is met. St. Mary’s Credit Union supports their members and the community with their earnings offering a myriad of programs and services. The popular 0 % efficiency loan through Mass Save Heat Loan Program allows members to receive a home energy audit and borrow up to $25,000 with 0 % interest for 84 months. Members of all ages can choose from a checking account that best meets their needs. “Gateway Checking” is geared toward young adults between the ages of 16 and 22 and offers reimbursements on ATM fees generated from other financial institutions. There are also accounts that require no minimum balance and offer dividend earnings.
Other services include deposit insurance; up to two days early direct deposit; overdraft protection; mobile banking; and online bill pay and banking, to name a few. A healthy loan and credit program offers various ways for members to borrow money. They include personal, auto, home and business loans with comptetitive rates that are typically lower than those from a traditional banking institution. A brand new service, “Making Cents,” helps members save money with a rounding up service to an even dollar amount and transferring the change to another account. St. Mary’s Credit Union also offers an array of products and services to help members plan for retirement. Today, the credit union has 60,000 members, all of whom have a say in the way the business runs, and assets nearing $900 million. Headquartered
in Marlborough, St. Mary’s employs approximately 125 people. Having started out as a true community-based organization, St. Mary’s Credit Union still takes its corporate responsibilities seriously. Once each week through the Read to a Child Program, 14 employees read to students at Marlborough’s Richer Elementary School. St. Mary’s also sponsors a bookmobile through a local library that brings age-appropriate reading materials to those who otherwise would not have access to the books. Finally, the credit union made a $100,000 donation over 10 years to support Marlborough Public Library’s expansion. St. Mary’s Credit Union strives to meet the changing needs of their members through technology, products and services. For more information about St. Mary’s Credit Union, visit www.stmaryscu.org.

Northeast Insurance
Continues Tradition of Personal Service
S
ince opening its first office in 1989 in Auburn, Northeast Insurance has grown from eight employees to 48 with six locations throughout central and eastern Mass. One thing that has remained constant over the years, however, is Northeast Insurance’s commitment to individual customer service. “Our approach with our clients has not changed from a personal contact basis,” said Stan Szajna, treasurer and co-owner of Northeast Insurance with Scott Bulger, president. “We still make house calls or commercial calls and don’t use automated phone systems. When clients call in, they speak to an actual representative. It’s the way we’ve always done it – with a personal touch.” The company also prides itself on the number of insurance carriers it represents. “Not all companies are all things to all people,” Szajna explained. “It depends on the type of risk. Some are better for higher-value homes, older homes or provide specific coverage for
people with animals, pools or trampolines. It’s not one size fits all.” The wide variety of carriers gives us the ability to shop around for best coverage and best price, according to Szajna. “We analyze each client’s situation, and, with the number of companies we represent, we are able to offer the best possible price for the appropriate
coverage. Every company has a little different strength and pricing ability. We can evaluate your needs and match them to a company and possibly improve coverage and price, especially if we combine auto and home insurance together,” Szajna said. Northeast provides a comprehensive array of coverages.
“We do a little bit of everything,” Szajna said, including life insurance, auto, homeowners and condos. On the commercial side, they provide coverage for retail and wholesale businesses and contractors. “Peace of mind is our policy” is the motto of Northeast Insurance and it is one that they take to heart. “We have been using that motto for quite a while,” Szajna said. “It means that we are always looking out for the best interest of our clients. We want to give them a feeling of security.” The attention to their clients extends to their Facebook page, where they post helpful information, such as how to keep your home safe while on vacation; summer gardening advice; and pool safety tips. Northeast Insurance has locations in Auburn, Westborough, Needham, Falmouth, Lexington and Provincetown. For more information, visit neinsure.com or call 800-443-7007.

Diane Cournoyer Dance Center Diane Cournoyer Dance Center was established in Northborough in 1965. With
a love and passion for the art, Diane started teaching neighborhood students in the basement of her home. As the studio grew, so did her need for a bigger space. She moved the studio to the First Parish Unitarian Church in Northborough and then to 329 West Main St., where it remained for 20 years. The dance center just moved to a beautiful newly renovated space at 386 West Main St. (Pendleton Square) in Northborough.
Diane’s daughter Michelle, who began teaching at age 14, came on full time in 1990 and has been running the family business with Diane ever since. The studio also has five additional dance teachers, each and every one of them having the same passion and love for dance as the Cournoyers. The Dance Center takes tremendous pride in offering quality classes with personal attention given to all students with an emphasis on body placement and technique. Whether you are dancing as a hobby or want to dance competitively, the Dance Center can provide the proper education.
In classic tradition, students are required to dress properly for class which includes a black leotard, tights according to dance genre and hair in a secure neat bun. Classes are offered in Acro, Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Modern, Lyrical, Contemporary, Irish Step, Hip Hop and classes for children with special needs. The dance center will be offering a variety of recreational and competitive classes, as well as fitness classes starting this October, which will include Booty Yoga, Booty Barre and Boss Chick Workout. Children can start dance as early as two years old. Diane herself did not start dancing until she was in her mid-twenties, which proves that you are never too old to start dancing. Both Diane and Michelle agree that through 62 years in busiThe family ness, dancers have come and gone but as educators one of the tradition most rewarding moments is when a former student brings their continues, child to study at the Dance Center. It brings back beautiful memwith Michelle’s ories and provides a tremendous sense of pride and accomplishdaughter Sadie ment in fostering a passion for dance. The joy of dancing is for the professional and amateur alike. The discipline, grace, coordination and feeling of accomplishment benefit the body and the mind of students of all ages. Cyprian Keyes Golf Club has built a reputation as one of the top places in the region to hold golf outings, meetings, social events and fundraisers. The club — conveniently located just off Route 140 in Boylston, one mile from Route 290 —hosts outings and events seven days a week, accommodating from 2 to 250 people or more. “We pride ourselves on running an operation where business people feel comfortable entertaining clients and people enjoy entertaining their friends and family,” Cyprian Keyes Golf Club’s General Manager, David Frem says. Opened in 1997, Cyprian Keyes offers 27 holes of golf — an award-winning 18-hole championship course and perhaps the finest par-3 course in the state. The club offers memberships for adults and juniors who want to play regularly and for those just learning to enjoy the game, they offer a Junior Golf school in the summer. The par-3 course — impeccably manicured and with large greens — is a favorite of both families and kids and is also a tremendous place for low handicappers to practice their irons and short game. Cyprian Keyes is more than just a golf course, though. It features a golf school, golf shop, driving range, and the Cyprian Fitting Center. The colonial-style clubhouse features five function rooms – one of which is a one-of-a-kind 19th-century English Music Room with beautiful windows and a high ceiling - and a casual, yet upscale, restaurant. All rooms, including Cyprian’s Restaurant, have outdoor access via a patio or deck, as well as breathtaking views of the course and surrounding countryside. In recent years, the Central Massachusetts community has really embraced Cyprian’s Restaurant. With standards like the Cyprian Burger, Turkey Club, and Cobb Salad alongside new favorites such as the Yucatan Chicken Quinoa Rice Bowl and Bourbon Marinated Steak Tips, the menu is certainly not just

A view from the restaurant patio of a beautiful sunset over the 18th green for golfers. In fact, as many, if not more, patrons come just to enjoy lunch or dinner than golfers dining before or after their round. “Due to the quality of our golf course and food we offer, many people think we are a private club,” Frem says. “That could not be further from the truth, we are open to the public in everything we do. We welcome everyone, whether they are here to play golf, enjoy a drink and live music during the summer on our patio, or plan an event.” Like many of Central Massachusetts golf establishments, Cyprian Keyes must follow Mother Nature’s guidelines. When the snow finally falls, the courses close for the season and the restaurant hours change as well. However, Cyprian Keyes hosts social and corporate events and offers some great weekly dining options year-round to escape the cold. Every Friday Night, Cyprian’s Restaurant has an all-you-can-eat Prime Rib Buffet that includes much more than just Prime Rib – multiple entrees, salad, dessert, and more

all for only $21.95. On Sunday mornings, it hosts a Sunday Breakfast Buffet for just $13.95 – made-to-order omelets, bacon, sausage, waffles, pastries, plus additional breakfast and brunch items thrown in. In addition to their two weekly buffets, Cyprian’s offers Thanksgiving and Christmas To-Go Packages. “We realize that many people enjoy being home at those times, so we now offer multiple package options so people can enjoy their holiday without being stuck in the kitchen all day,” muses Frem. What really separates Cyprian Keyes from other facilities in Central Massachusetts has less to do with the property, and more to do with the attitude and the dedication that the club’s staff bestows upon its clients. Cyprian Keyes Golf Club is a great destination for everything from golf outings to wedding receptions, precision club fittings to business meetings, dinner to golf lessons and everything in between. At Cyprian Keyes you can experience it all and as they say “enjoy the experience”

Over the years, the credit union expanded its service area to Shrewsbury and all contiguous towns. Services: Membership is open to those who live, work, worship or attend school in Shrewsbury or one of the bordering towns. Members can take advantage of traditional savings, checking and credit card services, direct deposit, automatic payments, and an array of personal lending choices – all with lower fees than most banks charge. We are currently offering highly competitive rates on mortgages, auto loans, personal loans, as well as home equity options. SFCU also offers commercial services, specializing in creative financing for small and large businesses. Current offerings include commercial real estate and equipment loans, business lines of credit and credit cards, as well as deposit products. It will provide opportunities for students to develop real-world skills and independence in order to prepare them for future success beyond their education. Increasing access to experiential learning and career awareness will help students decide on their paths for higher education and careers and will include, among others, enhanced learning in the STEAM fields (science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics). Funds will be used over the next five years to fund special events, transportation, communications, associated equipment and supplies. In keeping with its dedication in supporting the communities it serves, the credit union also offers residents and groups complimentary use of its spacious community room for gatherings and meeting. Children’s resale sizes 0-14
Tracy and Paul Ottaviano
I
first learned of Children’s Orchard years ago when I was introduced to the store by a friend. As a wife and mother of three children, I could appreciate the idea of buying and selling gently used children’s items. Plus, as someone who cares deeply about environmental protection, I really liked the idea of recycling these perfectly good items so they stay out of the landfill and let others enjoy them. I worked as an employee in the store
for 14 years, learning the business and what it took to be successful. I purchased the business four years ago with my husband Paul. This October will be our third year in our expanded location. At Children’s Orchard, we buy and sell gently-used children’s apparel, shoes, toys, and baby equipment. No need to wait for your items to sell because we are resale, not consignment. We pay cash the same day or you may choose store credit to earn even more. Since kids outgrow their clothing so fast, we help parents keep their kids in quality clothing without spending a fortune on it.

Mr. Handyman Central MetroWest Mr. Handyman serves Central Massachusetts and MetroWest, covering the Massachusetts Turnpike and Interstate-495 belt areas. Founded in Massachusetts, they’ve been in business for over 20 years and have consistently added franchises around the country and Massachusetts. Michael Campbell has been the owner of the Central MetroWest branch for over 15 years. Mr. Handyman has professional, licensed carpenters, all of whom are thoroughly background checked, bonded and insured. They show up in company uniforms and carry photo IDs because your safety and confidence are paramount to Mr. Handyman. People often expect a handyman to do only small jobs, but Mr. Handyman can do so much more. They can handle remodeling and all types of repairs and installations, including tile, gutter work, wood rot, siding, power washing, windows and doors, painting, drywall and water damage. If a licensed plumber or electrician is needed for your job, Mr. Handyman can refer and work with their reputable partners. Mr. Handyman can do maintenance tasks like smoke detectors and check and change heating filters. The professional handymen can inspect and install gutter guards or repair them if they are bent or loose.
They will check the drip edge that directs water into the gutter. This is a strip of metal that if isn’t set up correctly, will cause water to run behind the gutter, not into it, and cause damage and rot. Mr. Handyman can build or check your existing deck to determine if there is any wood rot from previous storms. If you see peeling paint and/or if the wood is soft, it is time to call Mr. Handyman. Ice dams are primarily caused by lack of proper insulation and ventilation. Mr. Handyman can check soffits and install roof heating cables to help prevent this and a reminder - now is the time, before the first snow flake falls. A little preventive maintenance can go a long way. It’s money well spent! Call Mr. Handyman at 508-366-3690.

The Castinetti Realty Group 745 Main Street, Shrewsbury MA 01545 508-277-0063 • 508-719-8804 As the president and owner of the Castinetti Realty Group, Andrea Castinetti offers her clients a wealth of experience gained from the business world as the owner of several successful companies in and around Worcester County. The other Realtors in the group also bring varied backgrounds to CRG including corporate finance, marketing, serving on municipal boards and more. That translates into a broad base of knowledge that can assist every type of homeowner, from those seeking to purchase their first house, couples searching for a home for their growing family, corporate moves, or downsizing. For homebuyers, CRG will support every step of the way, helping you find — and purchase — the home of your dreams. For sellers, they will provide a detailed market analysis, show you comparable homes that have sold in your area and help you accurately price your home to sell as quickly as possible for top dollar. The team knows buying or selling a home is not only a huge financial decision, it can also be a very emotional one. There is never any pressure or obligation; rather, they assist clients with the most complete information available to help them feel comfortable and confident in the decisions they make. But while experience is critical, there is another element that every member of CRG shares — a sincere empathy to help others and make their community a better place. And it is not just talk — after every sale, the company makes a donation to a local charity in their client’s name. On their website, there are listed dozens of organizations that CRG has donated to over the past few years.
“My goal isn’t to ‘get rich in this business, it is to make a difference,” Castinetti said. As part of that goal, she has also formed a nonprofit, the “Kindness Coalition of Massachusetts”. Through this organization she has launched such initiatives as a backpack drive to help children who might otherwise not have the right supplies to help them succeed in school and a major daylong event in Shrewsbury devoted to community spirit and the importance of kindness that was attended by hundreds of people of all ages. Home Instead Senior Care T
hirty three percent of Americans with a parent over age 75 say their parent needs help.* Most of that help comes from family caregivers often impacting relationships, jobs and health. Increasingly, families are turning to paid assistance. Home Instead Senior Care, Northborough and Natick, have been providing non-medical care in homes for 22 years. We provide the assistance that seniors need to optimize their lives, not just stay out of the hospital. Proper nutrition, medication, engagement in activities and reduced isolation all improve the lives of the clients. The burden on the family caregiver can be significantly reduced. The people calling for care have usually been daughters. We are now getting more inquiries from sons looking for care for their moms. This is part of a national trend:
Rightly or wrongly women have been the primary caregivers for children and for parents. They have the considerable skills to do so. Their relationships with their parents are often complicated and difficult when role reversal occurs. But it is somehow anticipated. The aging parent accepts, even expects, help from their daughters and other female relatives. I am a 69-year old son of a 92-year old mother who lives alone, 700 miles away. The situation is different. Fortunately, my sister lives near our mom. Men my age really do not know how to do care for our moms, particularly personal care. Our moms are not eager for us to learn. We tend to have less intimate relationships. We take what is said at face value sometimes without understanding nuances, or missing cues. Our experience at Home Instead is that a paid caregiver can bring a lot to a mother/son or nephew relationship.
We hope more sons call for help.

ichard and Grace Hebert opened their candy manufacturing and retail business in 1978, in the large white Colonial building visible from I-495. Richard’s grandfather started the family candy business back in 1917, and Richard has been making candy since he was 14. The Hebert Family has been bringing quality chocolates and a variety of other confectioneries to New England families for over 89 years. Colonial Candies was created with one purpose: to provide families from all over New England with the same high quality chocolate that New Englanders have come to expect from the Hebert Family. In 1917, our forefather Frederick Hebert did not just create a business, but a family tradition which has remained strong through four generations. From our elegant boxed chocolates to our world-class basket arrangements and everything in between, we offer something for every taste — even our dietetic customers! Here at Colonial Candies, we believe that offering a quality product and outstanding customer service starts with a firm commitment to our forefathers, our family tradition, and most importantly… to you our customers. We remember our past and look with excitement toward the present and the future. All of the candy is made on the premises; the lower level of the building houses the candy-making operation, where the Hebert’s and other staff members work seven days a week, 364 days a year, in sweet production. Colonial Candies is only closed on Christmas Day. Business hours: Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m Fri., Sat., Sun, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Fitts Insurance is a state-of-the-art insurance agency serving the needs of businesses, families and individuals throughout eastern and central Massachusetts. Fitts Insurance is a third-generation family-owned insurance agency. We’ve grown over the years and we have embraced technology and all the ways it helps us work more efficiently. But we’ve never lost sight of our true purpose, the protection of our clients. We take the necessary time to listen to our clients and discuss options for properly insuring their homes, cars, boats, businesses and lives. By representing many of the best insurers in Massachusetts, we can properly insure our clients while making sure the premiums they pay are competitive. We don’t promise to be the least expensive, but it’s nice that so often we are. It seems today that speed and efficiency are often ranked higher than quality. In some industries this may be acceptable, but when it comes to financial protection, speed must not be valued above caution. At Fitts Insurance, your protection is our priority.

We’re Mike and Carrick O’Brien, owners of MOhawk Fence Company. Mike has been installing fence for the last six years, and started MOhawk Fence as a side business about three years ago. With more than 15 years in the construction industry and 25 years management experience, we are excited to be part of the growing construction industry in Central Mass. This summer we incorporated the business as a women-owned business, so if that is important to you, as it is to us, we look forward to working with you. We know the name is unique; Mike really has a mohawk, and we capitalized the MO as it’s Mike’s initials.

At MOhawk we take great pride in providing superior customer service. We spend time working with customers to learn what they want and need in a fence project. We work closely with local partners in the landscaping and construction fields to help maximize projects for customers that wish to complete multiple stages at one time. And, of course, we are fully insured. As winter approaches, we are ready to provide snow plowing and shoveling for Shrewsbury residents. Give us a call today at 508-6145507 or visit our website at www. mohawkfence.com to learn more about us!
